Dear Alumnae Sisters, My NDB graduate, Lizzie ’26, had a serious case of senioritis, but beneath it was excitement and ambition as she prepares to become an Oregon Duck, envisions her senior summer and builds her business dreams. My oldest, Katie, is at CSM preparing for her next chapter this fall, playing softball at Western Washington University. The phrase “empty nester” suddenly feels very real as September approaches.

Shooting for the stars means watching them pursue their goals with courage and confidence. It means knowing the foundation they built at NDB helped them find their voices, discover who they are as young women and step fearlessly into their futures. My greatest joy is seeing them believe they can reach as high as they dare to dream.

They remind me that the power of women united in purpose is unstoppable. When we celebrate one another and stand firmly in our worth, there is no height we cannot reach. I see that strength in my daughters and my NDB sisters every time I walk the NDB halls, surrounded by the women who paved the way before us and the young women who now move through these halls with courage, resilience and vision.

Always be courageous in your ambition. Continue to speak up, step forward, and shine unapologetically. And as you climb, remember to extend your hand to the next woman ready to take flight. Together, we create a legacy of women who refuse to shrink their dreams and will make space for others to shine.

Dear NDB Alumnae, In this issue of Impact Magazine, we celebrate the extraordinary lineage of NDB alumnae who lead bright, bold and courageous careers—often taking them to new heights, across new horizons and around the world. From takeoff to touchdown, Tigers chart remarkable paths in service, leadership and impact.

Tigers carve out space for women in traditionally maledominated fields—including the government, law, science and aviation—where they serve as fearless professionals navigating both literal and figurative skies.

In the Cockpit and Around the World Madeleine Abbott Gilad ‘97 United Airlines Pilot Madeleine Abbott Gilad ’97 graduated from EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University with a degree in aeronautical science. From 1997-2000, female enrollment was only 13%. Often, she was the only woman in class, and rarely were there more than three women in aviation-related courses.

“There was no blending in. After Notre Dame, I was not phased about being in a maledominated environment. I think one of the great things about Notre Dame was that you got to be really comfortable being yourself.”

She adds that United Airlines leads domestic carriers in female pilots. Out of approximately 18,700 total pilots, a little more than 1,300 are women, which is about 7%.

Madeleine’s first airline job in June 2001 was flying regional jets for a United Express carrier. After four years, she was furloughed when the company went out of business, then spent a year selling small aircraft before joining a charter company. With her husband, she later started an aircraft management and charter business, which they ran for 10 years before selling it in 2016.

Madeline now flies for United Airlines out of Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) as a first officer on the Boeing 757 and 767. She flies a mix of international routes, primarily to Europe, along with domestic trips to cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

For the past 25 years, Madeleine has lived in Virginia outside Washington, D.C., with her husband, Shye.

Two of her sisters and five nieces and nephews live nearby. She visits other family members during layovers in San Francisco, Las Vegas and Reno.

Madeleine said her classes at Notre Dame were challenging, and her teachers were inspiring and supportive.

“Math and science classes have always interested me. Physics, biology, chemistry, geometry and algebra gave me a great foundation for learning and made college classes completely manageable. I really enjoyed the learning that took place in the labs. When I started taking flying lessons during my sophomore year, it felt like my own physics lab.”

She added that she now appreciates the humanities, arts and history more than she did in school, and wishes she had taken language study more seriously.

“I flew to Paris and Nice several times this year for work, and I still have not managed to learn French beyond greetings, reading the menu and directions. I will put finally learning a language as a goal for 2026,” she said.

Learning about history, religions and other cultures sparked her interest in travel.

“One of the benefits of this job is that you get to explore different cities, cultures, customs and foods. I love that now I am getting paid to travel. On recent trips, I visited the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Prado Museum in Madrid, and went for a hike in Uetliberg near Zurich.”

Madeleine said she learned to ask good questions and use all available resources. She still relies on these skills daily when making operational decisions in the cockpit.

“There are lots of scholarship opportunities for flight training. You can reach out to me if you have any questions.”

She is grateful for her Notre Dame education, which she said provided a safe space to learn, take risks and grow.

When not working, Madeleine spends time with her husband hiking, skiing, snowboarding and boating. She also enjoys hiking and biking with her nieces and nephews.

“I am most grateful for the friendships I made playing sports. Looking back, it seems like such a great way to keep your mind and body fit. Working together on strategies and play execution was rewarding when you could see the results on the scoreboard.”

Madeleine achieved her goal of visiting all 50 states in 2018, with Montana as the final stop, noting that simply passing through an airport did not count!

She also encouraged current students to consider a career in aviation.

“If you are detail-oriented, a rule follower, a problem solver, adaptable and like taking care of people, being a pilot could be a good career for you. You also get paid well and have time off to spend with family and friends.”

Madeleine explained that women still make up a small percentage of airline pilots, adding that visibility and awareness remain key barriers. She also said the profession offers flexibility in scheduling, allowing pilots to balance time at work with time at home.

“If you think flying might interest you, you can go to the San Carlos Airport, where I learned to fly, and take a discovery flight at Diamond Aviation,” she said.

A Career Above the Clouds Danielle Paya Ozment ‘04 U.S. Air Force Danielle Paya Ozment ’04 attended the United States Air Force Academy, where she earned a degree in astronautical engineering and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. She later completed a Master of Science in mechanical engineering at Rice University as part of the Draper Fellowship.

Danielle began her career as a flight test engineer with the Airborne Warning and Control System Joint Test Force in Seattle.

She flew missions in the E-3 that often lasted more than 10 hours. As an engineer, she upgraded aircraft systems, including radar, cockpit interfaces and operator controls.

“I was later selected to attend the United States Test Pilot School, where I flew in more than 30 different aircraft — including the Goodyear blimp — while learning the fundamentals of flight test. After graduating, I spent five years testing the KC-46 aerial refueling tanker before returning to TPS as an instructor. Following what I jokingly call my ‘hardship tour’ in the hot, windy desert of Southern California, I was fortunate to land my dream job teaching engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy.”

Now serving her 18th year in the Air Force, Danielle is stationed at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs where she works as a liaison officer to the Space Force. There, she tests systems for grounded and orbiting space assets.

Danielle credits NDB for teaching her to think creatively and adapt to new challenges.

“There was never a cookie-cutter answer — and that mindset is critical in test,” she said. “Every system we evaluate has unique requirements, operators and constantly changing environments, so adaptability is everything.”

She also says that Notre Dame prepared her to perform under pressure.

“My AP teachers were not easy, and balancing a heavy course load taught me how to manage stress, long days and high expectations — skills that proved invaluable at the U.S. Air Force Academy and later in the demanding test environment at the Air Force Test Center.”

Because Danielle had aspirations of becoming an astronaut long before attending Notre Dame, she knew the school would set her on the right path.

“Academically, it prepared me for the rigor I would later face earning a degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy, a master’s from Rice University and a second master’s in flight test engineering from the United States Test Pilot School.”

Danielle also values the opportunity to explore new interests outside the classroom.

“Notre Dame gave me a space to fail safely. I tried new things — like 5 a.m. crew practices — and explored extracurriculars ranging from editing the school paper to attending musicals with the Culture Club. Those experiences helped me figure out who I wanted to be.”

Danielle believes creativity and self-expression are essential because they encourage different approaches to problem-solving and support emotional well-being.

“Whether it is writing poetry, singing in the shower or dancing in the rain on a mountain summit, creative expression gives us a way to process and release energy. Mental health matters, and creativity is one of the best tools we have to keep it in check.”

Danielle is grateful for how NDB prepared her for the academic challenges that followed.

“Watching some of my peers struggle in college, I often found myself thankful for those four years of ‘tough love’ that built such a strong foundation. More than 20 years after graduating, I still keep in touch with some of my instructors. Those relationships are something I truly value.”

Danielle plans to retire from the military in the next two years and settle permanently in Colorado with her two daughters, Sierra, 5, and Peyton, 8.

Outside of adventuring with them, she enjoys mountain climbing and traveling the world.

Sisterhood Across Generations NDB’s Adopt a Sister Program

Notre Dame Belmont’s “Adopt-a-Sister” program matches students with Sisters at the Notre Dame de Namur Province Center in Belmont to build intergenerational friendships, foster mentorship and share the charism of St. Julie Billiart. Pairs are matched during the school year, with a formal meet-and-greet event held in the fall.

On Monday, March 9, ten sophomore students joined the Sisters they “adopted” for a spring celebration of the relationships they have been building. At the celebration, students and Sisters reflected on the characteristics of Notre Dame Mission spirituality.

They created collages using photos from international congregational activities over the past 15 years while enjoying one another’s company and freshly baked cookies.

During the school year, students stayed in touch with their Sisters by inviting them to the high school for lunch or a campus tour. Likewise, the Sisters invited students to tour the Province Center.

Students and Sisters meet regularly to share stories, pray together and participate in activities aimed at building community. Students gain insight into the lives of the Sisters as community leaders, while the Sisters share their wisdom from a lifetime of faith.

Ella Leyte-Vidal ’28 didn’t anticipate how easy it would be to connect with her Sister, but she’s learned so much from spending time together. Hearing her Sister’s life experiences and perspectives has taught Ella to slow down and appreciate moments of connection.

“It means a lot to me because it’s not something you get to experience every day. Being able to talk, laugh and share moments with someone from a completely different stage of life is really special. It reminds me how important it is to build connections outside your usual circle.”

“The Sisters have so much wisdom and life experience and they bring such a positive and uplifting energy when you speak to them. It’s a reminder that connection doesn’t have an age limit and that there’s a lot we can learn from people older than us.”

Ella is grateful to have been part of the “Adopt-a-Sister” program and plans to stay connected with her Sister.

Sophomore Stella Slezak ’28 also learned how important it is to connect with people who enjoy sharing their experiences.

“Learning about my Sister Nancy’s traveling and hearing about the many places she has visited is very interesting and fun. I also had the opportunity to tour the Province Center and see what goes on there. Connecting with a Sister of Notre Dame means being able to learn about Notre Dame through different eyes while sharing my own experiences as well.”

experience and wisdom to share. Other students want to learn more about Notre Dame, its mission and the life of a Sister, which they have been able to do through their conversations with the Sisters.

“It has been a pleasure to see students and Sisters connect with one another over this past school year. The lives of both the Sisters and the students have been enriched by this program.”

Rayya Bazlamit ’28 shares that she learned a great deal from listening to Sister Nancy’s stories.

“Connecting with the Sisters of Notre Dame is important for students because they share knowledge, faith and the heritage of the school.

The Sisters also teach students how to be kind, serve others and embrace their community.”

Sabrina Harper, who works in vocations for the Sisters of Notre Dame and partnered with Amy Jobin to coordinate the program, reflected on the program’s impact.

“This program focused on encounters and sharing. Sisters learned about the lives of their students, their extracurricular activities, family vacations and even sent encouraging messages and prayers on the day of one student’s driver’s test. Students learned how Sisters have lived their commitment to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur through their mission. Students were inspired by the wisdom of the Sisters and chose to continue nurturing their relationships with one another.”

A Journey of Service Mariella Cusing ‘28 Current NDB Student Mariella Cusing ’28 had the opportunity to join a mission trip to Nepal with a team of 17 people from all over the United States. Her team served at the Peace Child Home (PCH) in Pokhara and several nutrition centers in Kathmandu. At PCH, they served meals of dal bhat, played games, worshiped together and renovated the bedrooms and kitchen. In Kathmandu, they visited multiple nutrition centers—spaces where local neighborhood children share a free meal and learn about the Gospel in a safe environment. In both cities, they taught biblical lessons, led worship, and shared stories while building relationships with the children and local leaders.

Mariella shared that traveling to Nepal was challenging but eye-opening.

“There were many obstacles, such as travel delays and driving through steep hills and narrow dirt roads late at night. These were minor in comparison to the joy and friendliness of the local people who welcomed us. Even upon arriving at a late hour, the kids immediately welcomed us with tight hugs and big smiles.

They trusted us so quickly, which made every interaction feel meaningful and special.”

On this service trip, Mariella learned that joy doesn’t come from having material things but from community, faith and love. She witnessed the children worshiping with their whole hearts every single day, and their excitement never faded.

“I also learned the importance of serving humbly. Sometimes the most meaningful moments were just playing tag, praying together or eating meals side by side. One moment that stood out to me was when a young girl volunteered me to pray in front of everyone, pushing me out of my comfort zone. Also, while sharing devotionals with our team, it made me realize how much I had grown spiritually. I grew emotionally, spiritually and personally on this trip.”

Mariella explains that it’s important for students to experience community service because it broadens their view of the world and shapes their character in lasting ways.

Mariella is grateful for her NDB education because it develops her character by emphasizing faith, service, and leadership.

“I wasn’t just a tourist consuming the sights and sounds of another country, but shared in the daily lives of the Nepali people. I learned how to genuinely love and serve others selflessly through empathy, leadership and faith.”

“NDB encourages me to live out my faith through action and gives me opportunities to serve others in meaningful ways. This trip reflected so many of the values I’ve learned at NDB, and I felt well-prepared to step into this experience with confidence and compassion.”

“The joy and gratitude I felt among my mission team, the leaders and the kids were contagious. I was especially impacted by how grateful the kids were for even the smallest things, like giving them glow sticks for the New Year’s Eve parade, which they treasured for days. Having the kids pray over us before we left was incredibly meaningful, and although saying goodbye was hard, I hope to return someday soon.”

NDB is incredibly proud of Mariella and recognizes that she is an exemplary example of how Notre Dame inspires students to live lives of purpose and service.

Authentic Professionalism Amy Smerdel ‘14 Crisis Planner and Program Manager, U.S. Government Amy Smerdel ’14 is a Crisis Planner and Program Manager for the U.S. government, running war games with leaders to test and understand future challenges, decisions and resulting outcomes. An example of her work is partnering with 29 African air forces to build cross-continental disaster response plans.

Amy has been in the government and international organization space for her entire career. Before her current role as a Program Manager at Booz Allen Hamilton, Amy interned with the State Department in Washington, D.C. and Paris. She also worked with the United Nations in Senegal.

Amy shared that she looks forward to starting her next chapter at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in the fall.

Selected as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, she will be diving deeper into renewable energy and energy storage technology to provide reliable, secure energy access at a global level.

Amy loves her work because she can help communities prepare for their worst-case scenarios.

“It challenges me to think deeply and remember what matters most: those who are affected when disasters strike or wars break out. I have also had the privilege of traveling the world with this job!

Work trips are a lot of, well, work … but also incredibly fun. I’ve gotten to eat chocolate and French fries in Brussels, hike volcanoes in Hawaii and go on safari in Zambia.”

The most challenging element of Amy’s work is balancing so many different perspectives as people discuss real-world stakes.

“I am often in a room where many countries are represented, and each has different priorities. I tackle this ever-present challenge by remembering our ultimate goal, and as guidelines or timelines change, I ask myself: Does this action or adjustment support what we are actually trying to achieve? Based on the answer to that question, I can better see the road ahead and which differences in priority or opinion require the most attention in order to best prepare said country or organization for success in the future.”

Amy recognizes the importance of balancing work and life.

“The people in my life recharge my batteries! Weekend trips and long phone calls help me stay grounded and connected to my community. I love to travel, cook for friends and family and get outside. I’ll be doing a 10-day trek around Mont Blanc in the Alps this July!”

“Notre Dame prepared me to excel in my career by empowering me to always raise my hand, to not be afraid to showcase what I know, and to be brave in admitting what I don’t. These skills, while possible to cultivate in many places, are expedited when you are surrounded by smart, confident young women who challenge and inspire you.”

Grateful for her Notre Dame education, she cites Steve Jobs, who famously said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.”

“When I first started at Notre Dame, I was overwhelmed by the idea of going to a small, all-girls school and considered transferring. I now look back at all my dots and see how the friendships, teachers, community and structure of Notre Dame contributed to what I believed was possible and all I have since achieved. It was an education that eradicated a lot of self-doubt that might have slowed me down otherwise.”

Amy’s fondest memories are learning French with Madame Haddad, screaming as loud as possible every year at Aquacades, and playing tennis. She met her very best friend, Paige, on the NDB tennis team and was the maid of honor at Paige’s wedding. They still get together to play tennis every week. Amy has advice for students who aspire to pursue a career in a similar field and in a male-dominated industry.

“Bring your full self to your career! I was nervous that working in defense and male-dominated spaces would require me to abandon my personality to prove how smart or serious I was. However, sharing my joy, light and humor has in fact doubled the trust of my leaders and peers. While it is important to be professional, remember that it does not require stamping out your authenticity and charm.”

Amy encourages students to start journaling while at Notre Dame and beyond because it provides an incredible roadmap of where you’ve been and a compass to guide where you go next. Amy still finds herself glancing back at what she wrote when she was 16, and it helps her better understand who she is today.

Cleared for Take-Off Leslie Ronsin Burke ‘00 Air Force Pilot While Leslie started out at Cal Poly SLO as an agriculture major, she decided she wanted to fly for a career instead. Her dad encouraged her to check out Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona, where she joined the Air Force ROTC program.

With civilian ratings, she competed for a pilot selection in the Air Force, then went off to pilot training. Since then, she has flown various versions of the B-707 as an aircraft commander on both combat and noncombat missions, including surveillance, reconnaissance, counter-drug, and air refueling operations. This has allowed her to see the world and make lifelong friends!

“Military/flying wasn’t an obvious path. I went to Cal Poly as an agriculture major, but decided if I was going to put in the time and effort to be any good at anything, I was really going to need to love it. And I didn’t want to sit at a desk with a boring view. Picking my life up, swapping schools and moving onto a completely new path didn’t seem the least bit intimidating, something I absolutely credit NDB for. The rest of it just fell into place as I explored.”

Leslie married, left active duty, and joined the USAF Reserves at Travis AFB. Hired as a commercial pilot, she currently flies for Southwest Airlines out of Oakland.

Her husband does the same, and they have two “awesome adorable kids” to add to the adventure!

Notre Dame gave Leslie direction and a very strong foundation.

“I went through my years at NDB with an undeniable sense that I would be going somewhere after, even if it wasn’t immediately obvious what my future held. Everyone around me was moving, too. It’s not that we all knew what we wanted to do with our futures, just the idea that we had confidence instilled in us that we could build something when the time was right. It also gave me a sense of being part of a special place with history I was proud to be part of.”

Notre Dame prepared Leslie for her career. One of NDB’s core values is integrity, something Leslie shared with the Air Force and uses to guide what she does. Her NDB teachers taught her the importance of taking responsibility and ownership, introspection, leadership and the ability to pivot.

“Being part of the rowing team taught me a LOT about mental and physical toughness, even if my awesome mom still did most of the heavy lifting in high school sports, getting me awake, fed and in the car by 5:30 a.m.!”

Leslie explained that classes and experiences prepared her for her career.

“It is important for students to explore creativity and self-expression because they are critical in aviation, military leadership or any technical field. No mission ever unfolds exactly as planned. As a pilot, creativity shows up in problem-solving — quickly adapting to weather, mechanical issues or changing tactical situations while still operating within strict procedures. As a military officer, self-expression matters in how I communicate with confidence, lead and motivate people; clear, authentic leadership builds trust and helps teams perform under pressure.”

“My favorite memories at Notre Dame are mornings at the landing at the top of the stairs under the window, starting the day with my best friends and solving the world’s problems at lunch. I remember how the energy felt before the first Serra outdoor dance (in the daylight!) and the green Jaguar war paint as a senior at Aquacades. The list goes on: braiding our hair before rowing or track meets, really insightful teachers, lockers, feeling comfortable even when those years could be a little uncomfortable. I laughed a lot.”

Leslie keeps in touch with the NDB community and with her same circle of friends. “I attended my 25year reunion! It was so much fun. Everyone from that class just gets more and more awesome.”

Leslie’s advice for current students is to learn to be comfortable with the discomfort of being new at something. Instead of letting self-consciousness hold them back, they should treat it as an opportunity to improve. It’s necessary to “feel the burn” to master a skill set—the frustration, if one can channel it constructively and optimistically, is critical!

Leslie advises those who feel a technical or aviation career is interesting, but are unsure about the military as a pathway, that there are other options.

Aerial firefighting and air ambulance/medevac are other service-oriented ways to fly, in addition to the usual commercial, corporate or cargo options.

“If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, but love the idea, aviation safety programs, dispatch, and aviation medicine/human factors are really interesting ways to get into the community.

San Carlos or Palo Alto airports are great places to start if you’re curious, and there are many universities with flight programs, including San Jose State.”

NDB TigerBots Robotics Inspires Girls in STEM The TigerBots Robotics Team is proving that robotics is more than building machines. As Notre Dame Belmont’s award-winning, student-run FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team, TigerBots gives students hands-on experience in engineering, programming, marketing, fundraising and outreach while inspiring the next generation of women in STEM. This year, the team earned the prestigious Motivate Award, which recognizes teams that embody the spirit and philosophy of FIRST through leadership, gracious professionalism and community engagement.

The award reflects TigerBots’ commitment to mentorship, education and outreach. Team members have trained more than 600 Girl Scouts in coding and robotics through mini “master classes” and dedicate more than 50 hours each spring semester to teaching and mentoring elementary and middle school girls in STEAM. Anna Fox ’26 explained the significance of the recognition.

“We won the Motivate Award last year for our work both within and beyond NDB. Our team uses our knowledge to uplift others by mentoring underclassmen and working with Peninsula Girl Scouts to teach girls aged 5-12 about robotics and STEM. We hope to see more women in the next generation of engineers!”

The Girl Scouts outreach program has become a cornerstone of the team’s work. Each spring, TigerBots hosts events that help Girl Scouts earn robotics badges while introducing them to STEM concepts through block coding, Legos and circuit kits.

Maggie Blanchard ‘26 has served as Build Lead and Co-Captain for the past two years, overseeing all aspects of robot development, including mechanism design, physical construction, programming and CAD/3D printing. She is also a member of the drive team, controlling the robot during competitions.

TigerBots gives students an opportunity to apply lessons learned in the classroom to real-world engineering challenges. Students use concepts from physics, computer science and mathematics to design and code robots capable of completing FTC competition tasks. In previous years, students applied principles from their physics classes to create a mechanism capable of launching a paper airplane.

Beyond technical skills, the program also helps students develop confidence as one of the few allgirls robotics teams in the region competing in traditionally male-dominated spaces.

Mentor and NDB teacher, Kathryn Blanchard, said the experience teaches students far more than engineering concepts.

“TigerBots also encourages creative problemsolving, personal growth and collaboration. At competitions, students present their robots to judges, think on their feet and strategize with other teams. The business team learns how to identify and contact potential supporters, write grants and plan outreach.”

Blanchard said she is most proud of the team’s perseverance and collaborative culture. Without a dedicated robotics expert as a mentor, students must solve problems independently and seek resources on their own.

“I am so proud of the ownership they take over the process, the way they experiment and seek out resources, their determination in attacking problems and their resilience when they are up against teams who have more experience and resources. I also love how they mentor one another; the older team members role-model a positive team culture and involve younger students in all aspects of the process.”

As both a mentor and Maggie Blanchard’s mother, Kathryn Blanchard has also witnessed her

daughter’s growth as a leader.

“I have been so impressed by how much she has grown as a leader: Early this year, I got to watch her run a ‘build’ meeting, as students tackled the initial design of the robot. It was wonderful to see her so self-assured, encouraging all students to participate in the process, soliciting their ideas and finding ways to build on each person's strengths. She had amazing TigerBots role-models who mentored her, and it is inspiring to watch her now doing the same for younger students.”

Maggie said working alongside her mother has made the experience even more meaningful.

“I have really enjoyed working on robotics with my mom! It has been great to show her what our team does and to get her input on how to make our team run even better.”

Looking ahead, the team plans to expand its outreach efforts and strengthen mentorship opportunities for young women interested in science and engineering.

Through competition, mentorship and community service, TigerBots continues to empower students both within and beyond NDB, helping create a future where more young women see themselves as engineers, innovators and leaders in STEM.

Flying Into Business Carla Bottini Zanette ‘74 Owner, President and CEO Zanette Aviation Insurance When Carla graduated from NDB in 1974, she never imagined she would build an aviation insurance company. After earning her degree from San Francisco State University, she worked at Gap Inc. as a merchandise trainee and buyer before becoming a stay-at-home mom after the birth of her first child.

At the same time, her husband Chris was working for an aviation insurance company in San Francisco. Together, as young parents with two children, they made the bold decision to start their own aviation insurance business.

Continuing the legacy of strong NDB women, Carla launched the company from the basement of her mother, Josephine Maggio Bottini ‘51. Josephine recalled encouraging the couple and helping them secure a $20,000 startup loan from a family friend.

“I am extremely proud of the company that Carla and Chris built from the ground up,” she shared.

Carla remembers the early days vividly. “We could only afford one computer, and it was a big deal when we got a fax machine,” she said.

Before modern software and CRM systems existed, they built their own database and handled mountains of handwritten paperwork. As the company expanded, they later moved into offices at the Foster City and San Carlos airports.

“What I love most about my job is our customers,” Carla said. “Many have been with us for over 35 years.” Remarkably, the company has grown entirely through referrals, with its only advertising appearing in In Flight Magazine. They were one one of the first companies to advertise in the publication.

Carla credits much of their success to their employees and adaptability. “The biggest hurdles have always been keeping up with technology and finding the right people,” she explained. No CRM existed specifically for aviation insurance, so the company worked to design its own systems. “I never take our employees for granted. We haven’t always had a team that works exceptionally well together, and now that we do I will always be grateful for the work that they put in.”

Despite the demands of entrepreneurship, Carla and Chris prioritized family life. They made a conscious effort not to discuss work around their children and treasured short family getaways whenever possible.

For students hoping to start their own businesses, Carla emphasized the importance of education, experience, and financial planning. “Having a college education and then working for other companies first gave us an advantage because we understood how many parts go into running a business,” she said.

Today, the family’s NDB legacy continues through Carla’s niece, Cat Bottini Adamis, who serves as NDB’s Director of Marketing and Communications.

Carla reflected, “A third generation of our family is now benefitting from and contributing to such a special place.”

“My mother and I returned to judge Aquacades a couple of years back. We all attended the Centennial celebration together, and it’s just wonderful.”

Carla and her family are one example of the many multi-generational families whose lives have been shaped by an NDB education.

“At Notre Dame, I learned to be a forwardthinker,” Carla shared. “Long before these expectations for women were common, Notre Dame prepared women to be ambitious, educated and ready for meaningful careers. I’m grateful that both my mother and I received a Notre Dame education, because her support helped make starting a company possible.”

Kashni’s Flight to Impact in India Kashni Chopra ‘29 Current NDB Student Kashni Chopra ’29 traveled to Firozabad, India, as part of the “Yoga Without Borders” program. With her brother, she served as a youth yoga ambassador, teaching yoga and mindfulness to students in rural schools.

When she arrived, everything felt different—the schools, the environment and daily life—yet she also recognized how similar students are everywhere.

“Every day I saw students traveling together to school, laughing and talking. Those small moments helped me connect with them even before I started teaching.”

On the first day, many students were quiet and unsure, but Kashni quickly realized her role went beyond teaching yoga.

“We started with simple things — breathing, movement and mindfulness activities — not focused on perfect poses but to help them feel comfortable, present and safe.”

In just one week, she worked with more than 500 students across three rural schools.

“But what mattered most wasn’t just the number; it was the change I could see in them. By the end, many were reading with confidence. Some of my favorite moments weren’t planned at all — small moments of connection, laughter and trust. Even the shyest students started smiling more and participating, and many were leading with confidence.”

Kashni said the experience showed her how widespread stress and pressure are among young people and strengthened her goal of helping students build confidence, connection and self-belief through yoga and mindfulness.

Notre Dame Belmont (NDB) played a key role in shaping her approach to service and leadership.

“At NDB, we’re always encouraged to be kind, supportive and aware of what’s going on around us. The school emphasizes the importance of service as part of everyday life, not just something you do once in a while. Being in an all-girls environment where leadership and compassion are encouraged has inspired me to take initiative and use my own interests, like yoga, to make a meaningful impact. NDB has also taught me that even small actions can make a difference when done with consistency and intention.”

Kashni developed communication, leadership and adaptability skills while teaching in a new cultural and linguistic environment.

“I think NDB helped me be more open to stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new. I learned to use simple things like smiles, movement and encouragement to build connection. These skills helped me connect with students and adjust my teaching in a way that felt welcoming and accessible.”

Teaching yoga in Firozabad showed her how movement, mindfulness and kindness can unite people, even without a shared language.

“Everyone wants to feel included, supported and confident. Community service is not just about helping people; it’s also about learning, growing and creating meaningful relationships along the way.”

Unapologetic Confidence Angela Batinovich ’98 Marketing and Sports League Executive and Owner Founder of Avery’s Autism Adventures Angela Batinovich is a marketing executive, sports league owner, and nonprofit co-founder. She was the youngest owner in professional sports and was recognized by Inc. Magazine as a 30 Under 30: America’s Young Entrepreneurs in 2005. Over the course of her career, she held executive leadership roles and served on the boards of two professional sports leagues (NLL and ECHL), helping to shape team growth, fan engagement and community strategy. As one of the youngest owners in professional sports at age 24 and the only female owner in the National Lacrosse League, Angela didn’t try to blend in or “earn permission.”

“I showed up authentic, outspoken and ready to bring new energy to a league that had long been shaped by an ‘old boys club’ mindset. I owned my story and used it as an advantage, not a limitation.”

However, the obstacles that came with that role were constant. Angela explains that she was once removed from a visiting team’s owner’s box because she didn’t “look” like a professional sports owner—an incident that ultimately prompted the league to send a formal notice to all arenas clarifying that there was, in fact, a “young female owner and executive.”

“I could write a book about all the challenges that came with being a young female sports owner and executive at that time. And an unapologetic one, at that.”

Angela wasn’t afraid to challenge assumptions or push for a more modern approach to marketing, fan engagement and community connection. She believed younger audiences and brand culture and evolution mattered.

“That confidence didn’t come from ego; it came from a strong foundation built where I learned to trust my voice, think critically and lead with conviction. And the next year, the board awarded me Executive of the Year for the work I had done.”

Most recently, Angela helped lead the startup and brand development of the U.S. National Training Center for Table Tennis, guiding its launch, visibility and community presence.

Angela lives in the Bay Area with her family and is passionate about advocacy, storytelling and inclusive leadership. Today, she is the creator of Avery’s Autism Adventures, a platform led by her autistic teenage daughter that focuses on independence, accessibility and real-life tools for

neurodivergent families. What began as a way to document the journey for their nonprofit has grown into a resource for families seeking tools, encouragement and proof that neurodivergent kids can build confidence and independence while living full lives on their own terms. She also helps lead Inclusive Navigators, a nonprofit dedicated to making travel and everyday experiences more accessible for neurodivergent teens and adults.

“Just as importantly, Notre Dame showed me what it looks like when women support one another. That sense of community influenced how I’ve built teams, brands and communities.”

When asked why it is important for students to explore their creativity and forms of self-expression, Angela explains: “I have found that creativity is what drove my confidence. When schools encourage creativity, they’re not just developing artists or writers; they’re helping students learn who they are and how they move through life confidently.”

Angela is grateful for a Notre Dame education because it gave her more than academics. It gave her a solid foundation in a time when finding one’s identity felt so crucial.

Angela describes how Notre Dame taught her how to lead with confidence and empathy.

“Being in an all-girls environment gave me the space to speak up, take risks and trust my voice.

These are skills that became essential as I entered male-dominated industries (professional sports) and leadership roles later in life.”

“Beyond academics, Notre Dame instilled a strong sense of responsibility: show up prepared, lead with integrity and use my talents somewhere that properly valued them. Those lessons have followed me through every chapter of my career and into the work I do today.”

Angela shared that Notre Dame emphasized critical thinking, communication and the confidence to lead.

Finding a Voice Through Leadership and Law Annadel Almendras ’90 Senior Assistant Attorney General Annadel Almendras ’90 earned her J.D. from the UC Davis School of Law and her B.A. from UC Berkeley.

Annadel recently marked a major milestone: 25 years with the California Department of Justice.

Throughout her tenure, she served in the Public Rights Division of the Attorney General’s Office, and she currently leads the Natural Resources Law Section as the senior assistant attorney general.

In August 2025, Annadel was promoted to senior assistant attorney general of the Natural Resources Law Section within the California Attorney General’s Office—a milestone that coincided with her 25th anniversary with the California Department of Justice.

In this role, Annadel leads a dedicated team of 67 attorneys and seven paralegals. Together, they provide legal representation to more than 100 state agencies committed to managing the state’s natural resources and enforcing environmental protection laws, including the Air Resources Board, CAL FIRE, the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the State Water Resources Control Board.

Prior to joining the Natural Resources Law Section, Annadel served on the attorney general’s Energy Task Force and represented the attorney general and the Department of Water Resources in litigation arising from the California energy crisis of 2000-2001.

She also served on the attorney general’s Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, investigating and prosecuting financial institutions and mortgage modification firms for fraud and other misconduct that led to the financial crisis of 2007-2008.

In addition to providing an excellent education, NDB provided a safe and empowering space for Annadel to find her voice, have the courage to lean in and speak up with confidence, and cultivate her leadership skills.

“I had exceptional teachers who not only taught me to think critically, but also guided me on my path to a career in law and public service.”

Annadel knew since she was 13 that she wanted to be a prosecutor. Notre Dame provided her with the educational foundation, skills and confidence required to earn her undergraduate and law degrees, and land her dream job at the California Department of Justice.

“While I loved all my classes, my history and English classes were favorites, where my teachers taught me to question, analyze and truly understand the story behind the facts. NDB is where I began honing the clear, compelling writing and advocacy skills essential to my career as a litigator.”

Annadel explains that it is important for students to explore their creativity and forms of self-expression.

“Notre Dame is definitely a defining chapter in my life because it is where I found my voice.

Notre Dame provided the foundation I needed to pursue my dream of becoming an attorney by teaching the skills I needed to step up into leadership and speak with confidence.“ “Beyond the classroom, I am most grateful for the lifelong connections I built with classmates Janine Davis, Irene (Lin) Taylor, Catherine Tornabene and my twin sister Allison (Almendras) Przekop. I graduated in 1990 with a clear path to a career in law, forever thankful to the teachers and friends who helped me get there.”

Today, Annadel continues to lead with the same confidence, integrity and commitment to service that first took root at Notre Dame. Through her work in public service and environmental law, she remains dedicated to protecting California’s communities and natural resources while mentoring the next generation of women leaders.

“I am a staunch advocate for empowering young women with a ‘seat at the table,’ where they can share ideas, collaborate and contribute meaningfully in their professional and local communities. Nurturing our creativity and having the space for creative expression enhances problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence, which are key to successful careers in service-oriented professions, such as education, health care and human services.”

While Annadel entered Notre Dame as a shy freshman in 1986, she found her voice in a supportive and safe environment that empowered her to grow both intellectually and emotionally.

Taking Flight Through Faith, Service and Community Kristin Gibbons ‘75 Co-Founder of Fairmont Christian Secondary School Kristin Gibbons considers herself very fortunate to have attended NDB. The academics were strong, giving her a good foundation as she sought higher education and became a CPA at an international accounting firm. However, the most important skills that Kristin developed at NDB extended beyond academics.

“I learned the importance of serving others, building community and committing to a purpose that developed from my Christian values. I’ve learned that hard work and perseverance, combined with a heart of gratitude, can empower all of us to act boldly in proclaiming God’s goodness.”

Kristin and her husband, Mike, along with their three children, went on a mission trip to Uganda in 2009.

Ten years later, when they were able to use their time and resources to help the Ugandan people, they partnered with Hope4Kids International to serve as the seed capital providers, planners and implementers of a coed secondary boarding school in Tororo, Uganda.

“Mike has had extensive financial training through work in private equity, and the two of us have always placed a high value on education. It was a natural evolution for us to become involved in the construction and running of a secondary school, which is similar to high school in the U.S.” Fairmont Christian Secondary School (FCSS) is a Christian boarding school located in Tororo, Uganda, operated by Hope4Kids. It provides academic excellence and training for more than 200 vulnerable children.

Hope4Kids acknowledges FCSS as “the vision of Mike and Kristin Gibbons, who saw the lack of quality secondary schools in this district of Uganda, focusing on academic excellence, students’ health, well-being and the development of the whole self.”

While the current enrollment is 200 students, the school expects to grow to a full capacity of 500 students over the next two years. Girls between the ages of 13 and 19 make up approximately half the student body. It’s a boarding school that draws children from a variety of remote villages and towns.

Few children, especially girls, are given the opportunity to attend secondary school in Uganda.

The Class of 1975 is a special group of women who celebrated their 50th reunion in October with both a dinner and Mass. For several years, a close-knit group from the class has met regularly at the retreat house in Carmel for a pleasant weekend of fellowship and fun activities. All members of the class are invited, and each year there are regular attendees as well as a few new additions.

“My experiences at NDB led to the formation of my values and my desire to be of service to those in need, even those more than 9,000 miles away.”

“Together with my husband, I have used skills developed and honed throughout the years leading up to our involvement in Uganda.

Furthermore, I developed confidence to act boldly and take risks, even when it was difficult. I am not a risk-taker by nature, but I have learned how to step out of my comfort zone and do hard things.”

Kristin continues to lead with faith, gratitude and a commitment to service. Through her work in Uganda and the lifelong friendships she built at NDB, she hopes to inspire others to make a difference in communities both near and far.

The most important advice Kristin gives to current NDB students is for them to know that they always have a purpose.

Kristin is thankful that NDB taught her the importance of community. She is still connected to members of her graduating class and is enriched by the women who continue to be a part of her life.

Defying Expectations How Kaylee Pettis ‘27 Found Her Place on the National Stage For junior Kaylee Pettis ’27, competing at Nationals once felt impossible.

A Pom and Game Day athlete at Notre Dame Belmont, Kaylee has Ataxic Cerebral Palsy. From a young age, doctors questioned what she would be physically capable of achieving, particularly in athletics. Despite those doubts, Kaylee never stopped showing up, working hard and believing in herself.

During her freshman and sophomore years, Kaylee traveled to Nationals with her team, proudly supporting her teammates from the sidelines while wearing her warm-ups. Although she was part of the experience, she never imagined she would one day compete on that stage herself.

This year, everything changed.

As a junior, Kaylee competed for the first time in the Game Day Division and became an active competitor at Nationals. Her journey is a testament to resilience, determination and the power of refusing to give up.

At the USA Spirit Nationals held Feb. 19-24, the team’s Crowdleader routine placed fourth out of 14 teams in its first year competing in the division.

For Kaylee, reaching Nationals represents years of dedication and growth.

“Being part of the Game Day Division and preparing for Nationals are incredibly meaningful to me. This is my first year competing and it represents commitment, growth and teamwork at the highest level. This journey reflects how far I have come and the hard work I have put in over the past three years.”

Kaylee said she was drawn to the Pom Team because it offered a place where she could belong, grow and challenge herself.

“Pom is not just about performance; it is about teamwork and discipline. I sensed that this program valued effort, character and inclusivity, and that made me want to be part of it.”

That sense of belonging has made a lasting impact.

Kaylee credits her teammates and coaches with providing encouragement and support that extend far beyond practices and competitions.

“They remind me of my resilience and help me believe in myself on days when things feel difficult. My coaches have challenged me while also believing in me completely, and that combination has made all the difference. I have gained far more than a uniform from being a part of this team.”

Pom has also helped Kaylee grow in confidence and discover her own strength.

“Pom has helped me become more confident and stronger, and it’s helped me find my voice. It challenges me both physically and mentally, and every practice shows me what I can do. I work hard for myself, my teammates and to make the most of this opportunity. Competing alongside my teammates on such a big stage is both humbling and exciting, and I am proud to be a part of it.”

“There is a place for you in athletics, and your presence may end up inspiring more people than you ever realize.”

Coach Lea Santini said Kaylee’s story reaches far beyond athletics.

“She represents inclusion, courage and the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to belong and to shine.”

Reflecting on Kaylee’s impact, Santini said she has transformed her understanding of what it means to be a coach.

“Kaylee shows up every day with a positive attitude, a smile on her face, and an incredible sense of humor. She never asks, ‘Can I’? She asks, ‘How can I’? Saying no to Kaylee or telling her something can’t be done simply isn’t an option because she refuses to let limits define her. Coaching her has been one of the greatest privileges of my career.”

Santini believes Kaylee’s determination has helped shape the team’s culture.

“When teammates see how hard she works, how she never complains, and how she celebrates others just as much as herself, it raises the standard for everyone. She brings an energy that is contagious. Her positivity, resilience and joy remind the team why we do this. She has become a true heartbeat of our team and a powerful symbol of what team spirit really means.”

For students and athletes facing their own challenges, Santini offers a simple message: Do not let others decide what is possible for you.

Kaylee’s success also reflects the values of the Notre Dame Belmont community. Santini describes NDB as a place where students are seen, supported and encouraged to become their best selves.

“There is something special about this community: Our commitment to inclusion, faith and believing in the whole person. NDB athletics isn’t just about performance; it’s about character, opportunity, and heart. Kaylee thrives here because this is a place that empowers students to dream boldly and pursue those dreams with confidence.

Kaylee’s story is about more than cheer. It’s about courage, joy, and refusing to give up. She has changed our program for the better and reminded us that true strength comes from perseverance and heart. We are incredibly proud of her, and grateful to be part of her journey. Kaylee doesn’t just belong on this team - she makes it stronger.”

Kaylee says the sense of community is what she loves most about NDB. “Students are noticed, supported and encouraged to do their best. I am grateful to be a Tiger because this school has helped me to be brave and more confident. NDB is a welcoming place that has shaped who I am.”

Building the Future: NDB’s New STEM Wing Nears Completion A new era of innovation is taking shape at NDB as the school prepares to open its highly anticipated STEM Wing in August 2026. Designed to inspire curiosity, collaboration and discovery, the state-of-the-art addition will provide students with dedicated learning spaces for biology, chemistry, forensics, physics and ethics. It will be an environment where young women can explore science and technology while examining the responsibility that comes with innovation.

Legacy Youth Leaders celebrate STEM Wing funding announcement

On May 20, 2026, students, faculty, and staff gathered for another meaningful tradition: signing a wall inside the new wing and placing a time capsule within the building. The event served as both a celebration of the community that made the project possible and a reminder that the impact of the STEM Wing will extend far beyond the present moment.

“This project is about more than a building,” Head of School Meredith Essalat shared. “NDB’s STEM Wing will provide students with opportunities to build confidence, develop technical skills and discover passions that may shape their future college and career paths.”

The new STEM Wing has been intentionally designed to foster hands-on, collaborative learning. Modern laboratory spaces will allow students to conduct experiments, engage in research, and deepen their understanding through experiential learning. Specialized classrooms will support advanced exploration and problemsolving, while the Center for Ethics and Technology will encourage students to examine the intersection of science, technology, and humanity.

One of the most memorable milestones came in June 2026, when the new wing was physically connected to the school’s existing science building through what became known as the “wall blowout.”

In a dramatic and symbolic moment, crews opened the wall separating the old and new spaces, representing the bridge between NDB’s strong academic foundation and the future of STEM education at the school.

Pursuing a Passion for Genetics Carina Leveroni ‘20 Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling Carina Leveroni is currently in her first year at Stanford University pursuing a Master of Science in Human Genetics and Genetic Counseling. She graduated from the University of San Diego (USD) with a B.A. in Biology. As an undergraduate, Carina interned with the APS Type 1 Foundation to increase awareness about rare diseases and genetic testing.

As part of her training, she works in the Perinatal Diagnostic Center and rotates through different genetic counseling specialties.

“I am learning about a variety of different genetic conditions and the role that genetic counselors play in managing care. Throughout my time in graduate school, I will rotate through many different specialties, from prenatal to cancer, to gain skills” Carina explains that Notre Dame prepared her for university and graduate work. The numerous leadership opportunities, especially Ambassador Board, allowed her to become a confident leader.

Through her classes at NDB, she gained skills in communication, time management and collaboration.

The foundational knowledge she gained in biology and chemistry prepared her for the rigorous coursework at the USD and Stanford.

“Mrs. Girard’s Honors Biology class inspired me to pursue a career in genetic counseling.

During the unit on genetics, I was introduced to genetic counseling and learned about the role a genetic counselor plays in discussing genetic risks with patients and families. Having exposure to this career at a young age allowed me to get a head start on preparing to pursue this career.“ “NDB provides a safe space for students to explore their passions. Whether it is a unique

class, such as Forensic Science, or being part of the team that assembles the yearbook, I had countless opportunities to learn about topics or gain skills in areas that I would not have otherwise had exposure to.”

Carina is grateful for her Notre Dame education, which helped her become a well-rounded individual. From science to English classes, she developed a love of learning that inspired her to pursue a career centered on helping others.

“The extracurricular activities that I was involved in taught me the importance of collaboration and how to be a leader.

Participating in the many Notre Dame traditions, such as Aquacades and wearing my class color, are some of my treasured memories. I am grateful for the lifelong friendships that I made and the teachers who have continued to support me throughout my educational journey.”

As Carina continues her studies in genetic counseling, she hopes to combine science, advocacy ,and compassionate patient care in her future career. Her experiences at Notre Dame helped shape the confidence, curiosity, and leadership skills that continue to guide her as she prepares to support patients and families navigating complex genetic conditions.

Spotlight on NDB’s 2026 Valedictorian and Salutatorian Valedictorian Aleeya Baqai NDB’s Valedictorian Aleeya Baqai will study Molecular and Cellular Biology at UC Berkeley. Her path towards science was inspired by her classes and teachers at NDB. From Honors Biology freshman year with Dr. Srinivasan to Chemistry with Dr. Hegarty and Dr. Haithcox, Aleeya was captivated by the field of STEM and inspired by her teachers to pursue a degree.

“As my first science teacher here at NDB, Dr. Srinivasan’s love for biology was contagious, and her amazing teaching skills and care for our personal well-being and academic journey inspired me to pursue biology in college.”

Aleeya’s experience at NDB has prepared her to excel at UC Berkeley and beyond.

“NDB has prepared me well for the future by giving me the unconditional vote of confidence and the ingredients to succeed—including the value of hard work, confidence, leadership and advocacy skills.”

Salutatorian Claire Nguyen NDB’s 2026 Salutatorian, Claire Nguyen, will study Psychology at UCLA. Claire shared that all of her courses at NDB, regardless of the subject, helped her to gain confidence to pursue her passion.

"Having taken Spanish 4, AP Spanish Language, and AP Spanish Literature with Professor Gavidia as well as AP Art History with Mrs. Kuntz, I've learned to be passionate about what I'm studying. Professor Gavidia and Mrs. Kuntz encouraged discussion and interpretation and I felt I could fully engage in analysis without feeling pressured to have a right answer. These experiences have truly made a positive impact on my perspective on education.”

Claire further shared that her peers and teachers have helped her to be confident in who she is.

Bridget Marchetti Philip has been living in Burlingame with her Serra high school sweetheart, Brian Philip, and their two daughters, Olivia (NDB ‘27) and Sabrina (NDB ‘24). She has been working for 20 years at a level one trauma center, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, as a pediatric anesthesiologist and enjoys caring for critically ill patients and teaching the Stanford anesthesia residents.

She enjoys visiting Missoula, Montana where Sabrina goes to school, as well as Lake Tahoe and family in Italy.

San Mateo County appointed Effie as the first Director of Strategic Communications and Community Partnerships, a new role in the County Executive’s Office designed to strengthen public engagement and trust. “We need to engage earlier and more meaningfully, so people understand the issues, the tradeoffs and what’s at stake before decisions are finalized,” Verducci said. “It’s not just about a project or a proposal. Select credits include: Technical Coordinator for Lesher Center for the Arts, Assistant Director and Stage Manager at OSF, and 11 seasons at Tony Award-winning TheatreWorks Silicon Valley as resident PSM. She has also toured with Evan Rachel Wood and Zane Carney’s band EVAN+ZANE. Taylor trains historic mêlée weapons at Davenriche European Martial Arts School under master swordsman Sir Steáphen Fick and lives on a farm in Sunol with her partner, Alex, and furbabies Daín and Bjorn.

Emma Boyd Life has taken Danielle across the world and into new chapters she never could have imagined. She became a UC Berkeley Alumna, got married and became Mrs. Harden, and spent time living in Sydney, Australia, where her son, Benny, was born. Today, Danielle leads GTM Data Operations and Governance at Abnormal AI and is based in Huntington Beach, CA, where she lives with her

husband and son. “I’m grateful for the foundation Notre Dame provided and carry those experiences with me in both my personal and professional life.”

Emma Swayze Emma is moving from Memphis, TN back to California to start a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine (High risk obstetrics) at Stanford University.

Emma has presented research on Mental Health policing models at the Western Political Science Association annual conference in San Diego. This research uses LEMAS data collected by the Bureau of Justice Statistics every four years, which include statistics on characteristics of local, county, state and federal agencies. This expanding research project will use these characteristic statistics in every state to determine whether mental health policing models and Crisis Intervention Teams can be predicted. 2017 Katie Brandi After completing 1.5 years at Gonzaga University as a Lecturer in Sociology, Katie is now beginning her Ph.D. in Sociology at Loyola University Chicago. She hopes to return to the classroom as a scholarteacher upon completing her Ph.D. “I still come back most years to play in the Notre Dame Alumni basketball game. Go Tigers!”

Ryann is currently finishing up her second year playing soccer at Cañada College and hopes to continue her academic and athletic career at a four-year university.

She is also proud to be a varsity soccer coach at Notre Dame, where she enjoys supporting our studentathletes and giving back to a program that helped shape her.
