This issue of Visions celebrates Notre Dame’s OUR TIME to INSPIRE Strategic Plan and the Comprehensive Fundraising Campaign that supported its priorities. Nothing demonstrates the impact of OUR TIME to INSPIRE more dramatically than the contrast between our cover shot taken in December 2020 and the picture of our campus taken circa 2001 on the inside cover.

State-of-the-art athletic fields, including two natural grass fields, two turf fields and a running track now grace the front of the Academy’s campus as Burns Field, Schneider Family Track, Fitzgerald Fieldhouse at Launfal and the Gillin Terrace welcome athletes, parents and visitors.

The 30,000 square foot Riley Center for STEM Education, with its McNeill Gallery, Zozaya Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship Lab and Rudnay Design and Innovation Lab, anchors the southern section of the campus, restores the Sister Corinne Ritchie Rose Garden and shapes a lovely quad that links the completely renovated Mansion exterior with the Josephine Connelly Arts Center.

A new entrance from Godfrey Road, new campus signage, seasonal landscaping and 250 new trees complete a campus picture that embraces beauty and quality in all aspects.

Most importantly, these campus developments provide the physical context for the ongoing fulfillment of Notre Dame’s Catholic Mission, the Hallmarks of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the Academy’s long-standing tradition of excellence in teaching. The OUR TIME to INSPIRE timeline in this issue highlights all the many accomplishments of the Academy’s strategic and transformational growth.

The 2015-2020 OUR TIME to INSPIRE Strategic Vision was a bold and comprehensive plan to elevate every facet of the Academy in order to provide more opportunities for our students, for their families and for the Notre Dame community as a whole.

Join us as we celebrate the extensive accomplishments of this successful plan and remember the “north star” that guided us throughout this process: “The Academy of Notre Dame will be recognized as the premier independent Catholic academy for young women in North America by developing strong, confident women who are prepared to be leaders in a global society.”

OUR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The 2015-2020 Strategic Vision began with a robust plan to enrich our academic program — the cornerstone of an Academy of Notre Dame de Namur education. With both holistic and departmental objectives, OUR TIME to INSPIRE focused on elevating the academic experience in order to achieve the following goals for our students: recognizing each young woman’s unique potential, encouraging scholarship, instilling self-confidence and inspiring leadership.

OUR TIME to INSPIRE’s academic milestones include the establishment of the Center for Global Leadership and our network of international sister schools (see page 5); the creation of the Academy’s STEM, Global Citizen and Art Scholars Programs; our partnership with Apple as an Apple Distinguished School and our 1:1 MacBook program; and the design and implementation of an integrated STEM curriculum across all grade levels.

A sample of these curricular additions includes Entrepreneurship, STEM Ethics, Design Thinking, Mandarin and Music Theory.

The ambitious strategic vision outlined in OUR TIME to INSPIRE could not have come to fruition without the transformation of the Academy’s campus. Beginning in June of 2014 with the creation of the new athletic complex, Notre Dame began a five-year period of continual campus construction and renovation. Further guided by the Campus Master Plan, which was approved by the Board of Trustees in October of 2015, the renewal of the Academy’s 39-acre campus included the comprehensive exterior restoration of our iconic Mansion and the opening of our hub for the newly integrated STEM curriculum – the Riley Center for STEM Education.

Additional improvements during this period include our new Dance Studio in the Josephine Connelly Arts Center, the restored Sister Corinne Ritchie Rose Garden, the Crew Center on North Campus and numerous hardscape and softscape embellishments

that have enhanced the safety and the welcoming nature of our campus for all.

In recognition of these significant campus enhancements, Notre Dame has earned numerous awards and recognition during this period including “Most Beautiful School” in Pennsylvania, Best Private School on the Main Line & Western Suburbs and Excellence in Construction Award.

In keeping with the strategic vision, all campus enhancements were rooted in OUR TIME to INSPIRE’s goal of creating dynamic teaching and learning environments to facilitate best practices reflecting 21st century pedagogies. This accomplishment not only inspires the young women and faculty of today’s Notre Dame, but it will also serve as a beacon for prospective students who will become members of the “sisterhood” in the years and decades to come.

OUR ATHLETIC ENHANCEMENTS To complement the rich tradition of academic excellence at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, a competitive athletics program is essential. Phase I of the OUR TIME to INSPIRE campaign, completed in June 2014, brought to fruition the impressive athletic enhancements necessary to best serve the outstanding current studentathletes of the Notre Dame Irish and to attract talented studentathletes who will continue the strong legacy of Notre Dame athletics. These enhancements included the construction of two state-of-the-art synthetic turf fields—including Burns Field where our lacrosse and field hockey teams compete—as well as a new track—the Schneider Family Track—a new softball field, and upgraded all-grass playing fields. All work incorporated sophisticated storm water management systems and environmentally sensitive landscaping. Our students are now competing on one of the most impressive outdoor facilities on the Main Line and in the

greater Philadelphia region.

In addition, in fall 2017, the Academy celebrated the renovation and naming of the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse at Launfal.

This attractive and highly functional fieldhouse for student-athletes and spectators is highlighted by a new viewing terrace, Gillin Terrace, that overlooks the athletic fields, providing optimal viewing for guests.

These outstanding athletic facilities that punctuate the conclusion of Phase I of the OUR TIME to INSPIRE campaign symbolize the school spirit of the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur and will inspire the students, alumnae and community of Notre Dame for years to come.

Persistence. Teamwork. Confidence. These character traits, tested and forged on Notre Dame’s playing fields, on the courts, and in the water, mark a proven connection between female athletes and successful leadership.

The third goal of the Strategic Plan was to create a center for leadership and international studies that would “educate, empower and inspire young women to be leaders in a global society.” The manifestation of that goal is the Center for Global Leadership (CGL), a vibrant element of the curriculum at Notre Dame that equips young women with the tools needed to become informed and compassionate global citizens.

The growth of the Center for Global Leadership in these first five years has been nothing short of remarkable. Touching on multiple hallmarks of a Notre Dame education, the Center is teaching students of the Academy that they not only have a role but also a responsibility to act on behalf of justice and peace in their local and global communities.

Juliet Marchesani ’19, who participated in the Academy’s first exchange to our sister school San Silvestre in Lima, Peru, shared, “We are lucky enough to go to a school that not only recognizes the value of being a global citizen but also supports us [in this endeavor.]”

Thanks to the Center for Global Leadership, over 150 students have been able to immerse themselves in other cultures by participating in homestays, attending classes, and connecting with peers in numerous countries around the globe, true life-changing experiences for so many Notre Dame students.

It’s no secret that the COVID-19 global pandemic has impacted all corners of our lives. With travel restrictions forecasted to be present well into 2021, Notre Dame’s Center for Global Leadership (CGL) has had to reshape its vision and curriculum. Luckily, the CGL was up to the challenge.

Creating Solutions with Singapore Notre Dame’s Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship classes are participating in a Global Classroom with students at our sister school in Singapore, St. Nicholas Girls’ School, where they are applying the design thinking process to identify, address and offer solutions to unique and indirect problems created by COVID-19. Topics include increased mental health issues, food circulation for the disadvantaged and support for the elderly. This four-week collaboration allows the students to meet virtually with their team to discuss the similarities and differences in their own experiences during the pandemic and choose the problem and solution they’d like to research together. The project will conclude with live, digital presentations.

Addressing the Climate Crisis with Canada Notre Dame’s 11th grade Catholic Morality classes collaborated with Canadian sister school, The Study, on a TEDxCountdown Watch Party, to address the climate crisis and inspire people around the world to take action. The TEDx video featured a discussion on the importance of these issues by students at Notre Dame and The Study, as well as climate talks by influential people like Al Gore, Pope Francis, Prince William and more.

The entire 11th grade class watched the video’s final product and is working on Environmental Action Plans alongside students in Montreal.

Teaching Girls What They Need to Know for Life MIDDLE SCHOOL EDITION “I remember pulling into campus along the tree-lined drive and praying for guidance during my interview. [After my meeting], I knew I would fit into the community easily and make a difference with my students. While we were all saying our goodbyes, Sr. Regina Finnegan, past Head of School, tapped me on the shoulder and gave a thumbs up.”

In her nineteen-year career, Bridget Bonner has served in several positions within the Notre Dame community. Beginning her journey as a social studies and religion teacher, she moved on to become the Religion Department Chair, then Director of Admissions, and now most recently, has taken on the role of Director of Middle School. Her numerous titles within the institution have allowed her to gain insight and build relationships with the students, families and faculty.

“The skill set of knowing the curriculum and the strengths of the faculty led me to my current position last December. It was a seamless fit for me,” Bonner shared. “I had a great working relationship with all of the teachers, and I knew the students through the admissions process. My heart has always been with this age group and their awesome potential.”

“A time for growth and discovery,” Notre Dame’s Middle School features a curriculum that encourages exploration and curiosity, equipping students with the tools needed for a successful academic career in the Upper School and beyond.

One of these tools is the one-to-one laptop program which provides a MacBook Air to each member of the ND community. This access to technology has allowed students to

partner with Notre Dame’s sister schools across the globe on various projects as well as expand their knowledge of skills such as graphic design and computer programming. Additional points of pride within the Middle School curriculum include the World Language Program with four distinct offerings in French, Latin, Mandarin and Spanish, as well as the Counseling Department’s Seminar Program, which focuses on life education that’s intended for each specific age group. To Bonner, however, the strength of the Middle School really lies within the educators.

“The strength of our program lies in our teachers and the talent and knowledge that they bring to the classroom every day. Our teachers are experts in their fields, and our students are not learning math from someone who also teaches language arts and history. The teachers love their subject matter and pass along that passion to their students,” Bonner said.

Each year, Notre Dame continues to stay ahead of trends, and 2020 is no different. Aside from introducing Canvas, a new web-based learning management system, the school integrated an updated curriculum that translates easily to virtual learning when needed. This incorporation of modern strategies have allowed faculty to teach their subjects in a safe manner during the COVID-19 pandemic. These strategies appear in many ways around campus but most notably through students creating digital art in creative courses to prevent the sharing of art supplies, outdoor geocaching in social studies classes and our chorale teacher incorporating individual ukuleles to enhance instruction of chords and songs. Notre Dame students have also

participated in Global Classrooms where they partner with schools in Singapore, Canada and England on projects pertaining to COVID-19 relief, the climate crisis and more.

Bonner’s passion for Middle School doesn’t end with education. She sees the whole student, understanding that developing the entire person is crucial to a prosperous life. This encouragement teaches students to be assertive and confident, allowing them to form relationships, initiate conversations and share their experiences with zeal.

“My favorite part of working with Middle School students is watching them grow. Sixth grade students come to ND with a sense of excitement and newness.

Their enthusiasm is contagious,” she said. “Seventh grade students exhibit a sense of stability and confidence. They are unafraid to ‘get lost.’ Finally, you see the eighth grade exhibit a sense of leadership and ownership. They are supportive of one another and revel in their status as the oldest girls in the Middle School.”

Today, Bonner spearheads the growth and innovation of the Middle School, as well as its students, faculty and curriculum. Her passion for the advancement of quality education continues to make Notre Dame a premiere all-girls’ school.

Middle School Teachers Get Creative During the Pandemic This year, the Middle School faculty has risen to a new challenge: toggling between in-person and virtual learning. Here are some of the methods and tools they’ve used to effectively educate their students, whether in the classroom or at home.

“As a class, we are writing an ongoing novella about the adventures of a Roman girl and her dog. Using Pear Deck [an interactive technology], the students vote for what should happen next in the story and/or write their own proposals in Latin. Because Pear Deck can work both in live sessions and in student paced mode, the girls can either see their classmates’ choices in real time or can work on their own proposals at their own pace.”

Amanda Klause, Latin Teacher “For Mandarin in Middle School, we’ve been using TikTok to make socially distanced pair and group projects. They love the TikTok challenges because it makes learning Chinese fun.”

“This year, I moved all art classes to a digital format. We each have laptops with access to the Google Suite for Education apps and all of the Adobe Creative Cloud apps. Students have been using Google Drawings since the start of the year and I’m extremely pleased with how well the students have done.”

This allowed the girls to connect with each other, as well as the text, in a small group setting, which most of them felt was more productive than sitting on a full Google meet call.”

Delivering a Premier Middle School

Education Leading Peers to God Through Service and Prayer Notre Dame’s Middle School Campus Ministry gives students a voice in their own faith development by planning and leading initiatives for their peers to strengthen their relationship with God. This year’s Middle School Student Ministers, Ava DiGiuseppe, Kendyl Mordan, Temperance England and Leah Mejzak, all class of 2025, have been busy organizing service and spiritual life programs such as the annual Thanksgiving basket donations and coordinating community prayer quarterly. Soon, the group will introduce a prayer partner program that assigns Middle School students a partner to pray for each day.

I teach 6th grade science and I know not everyone will be a scientist but the thing I hope the girls take away from my lessons is that they can do anything.

Making the Best of an

Unforgettable Season There are so many different clubs and classes at Notre Dame. I'll always have something to do that I love doing with people who share my interests.

Notre Dame’s senior athletes joined the millions of 12th graders whose final year of playing high school sports was interrupted by a global pandemic. With a delayed start, the Academy’s fall teams were allowed the opportunity to practice and play within the schools’ Inter-Ac league with a shortened season.

The change in routine has encouraged students to go the extra mile to ensure good morale and connectivity between teammates. Senior tennis player Meghan Gallary shared, “Tennis is a pretty distanced sport but this year made me appreciate the little things we can’t do anymore like team huddles, congratulatory hugs or pregame handshakes. I’ve learned how adaptable and united we are as a team. Everyone has been so versatile about changes like staying 6 ft. apart during practice and wearing a mask when off the courts.”

Notre Dame is a wonderful choice for any student who is trying to pursue not only excellence but also a place where she can be her true and authentic self.

It’s uncertain what the spring season will look like for Notre Dame Athletics, but the department’s director, Ben Davey, and coaches will continue to prioritize the safety of the school community and ensure that senior student-athletes will have an undeniably memorable last year.

Middle School Student Ambassadors Notre Dame prides itself on the success and happiness of its students, and when you meet one of our Middle School Student Ambassadors, it’s not hard to see why. Though this year is different, student ambassadors are still finding time to share their experiences with prospective students through virtual lunches and introductory emails. By sharing their love and knowledge of Notre Dame, these students are paving the way for the next generation of students who will be prepared to fill their shoes as they start their own journey at the Academy.

When asked why she chose Notre Dame, Middle School Student Ambassador Paige Moran ’27 said, “I chose Notre Dame because the school looked like a place where my learning could grow and expand in ways that it hadn’t before.”

Prior to COVID-19, ambassadors’ responsibilities had expanded to giving tours during Open House, assisting with Back to School Night and hosting student visitors for shadow days, during which they shared their favorite aspects of the ND community.

“My favorite thing about Notre Dame is how patient and caring the teachers are. I also love how the girls in the grades above us say ‘Hi’ every morning,” Paige said. “It makes me feel safe because I know that those girls have been here longer than me and can help me whenever I need it.”

“Although it was sad to see my ‘normal’ senior season slip away, especially a season that had great potential, I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to run in my final meets and to be able to enjoy any type of season with my teammates.”

“COVID taught me that my teammates and I are stronger than we believed because we all put in so much effort to make this season as normal as possible. We’ve all pushed through the hard practices with our masks on because we know it will only make us better. Personally, I’ve learned how to find the positives in a negative situation which is a necessity in life.”

A Message from the Athletic Director

At the start of the 2020-2021 school year, our biggest hope was that we'd be able to get our studentathletes out on the fields, on the track, on the courts and in the pools as safely as we possibly could during these unprecedented times. In October, we finally got the “green light” to have some interscholastic play for our fall sports as part of the Inter-Ac League. Cross county, field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball teams were able to compete in this shortened season, with over 200 Upper School students taking part. These games, matches and meets gave our student-athletes a physical and mental boost, and our fall senior athletes were able to showcase their abilities one last time as Notre Dame players.

While our fall season was cut short, we remain hopeful that we'll be able to return to a bit of 'normalcy' in the spring in time for our golf, lacrosse, softball and track teams to play. I know our coaches and athletes alike will be ready to get back on the playing field after missing out this fall.

The hard work of our student-athletes and coaches and their continued dedication to the Notre Dame athletic program, especially during these challenging times, have been nothing short of inspiring.

Breaking Records with 1000 Assists Christine Covello ’21 joined

the elite Volleyball 1,000 Point Club on November 10 when she achieved her 1,000th assist in her Notre Dame career.

Although the team ended up losing in a thrilling five-set encounter, Christine was able to accomplish this great achievement and become the first Notre Dame player to do so. In addition to this victory, she committed to play volleyball at the collegiate level next year at St. Francis University.

The outdoor event allowed for families to enjoy a night of entertainment and community while maintaining a proper social distance.

This year, Notre Dame introduced Mrs. Tina Williams, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

This critical new role will facilitate the implementation of initiatives that invoke the Academy’s 5th Hallmark: We embrace the gift of diversity. This intentional work will ensure equitable opportunities for each student’s personal and academic success provided through an alumnae mentorship program launching in 2021, racial equity training for all members of the ND community through our two-year partnership with Sage Wellness and the expansion of representation among students, faculty and staff.

2020 Senior Mother Daughter Mass In September, seniors and their moms gathered safely for the Class of 2021 Opening Liturgy in the Aimee Willard Gymnasium followed by a picnic with food trucks and a DJ on the Mansion lawn.

Walking for Water at Notre Dame On October 31, the Notre Dame community came together to walk in solidarity with the millions of women and children who walk for clean water daily. Almost $2,000 was raised in support of the water purification projects in developing countries sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

Student Delegates at NAIS’ Annual Diversity Conference This year, Notre Dame sent four student delegates (Taylor Brooks ’21, Emma Oyakhire ’22, Rahbin Ravenell ’23 and Leylanie Santiago ’23) to the virtual 2020 NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference. The event is a multiracial and multicultural gathering of student leaders from independent schools across the US and abroad that offers education in cross-cultural communication skills, foundations of allyship, networking principles and effective design strategies for social justice practice.

Our first event featured Lindsay Hueston ’12 from the National Alliance to End Homelessness in Washington, DC, and highlighted the crisis of homelessness in our country and the importance of advocacy. Exemplifying the True Meaning of Semper Fidelis On October 25, seniors from Notre Dame’s Crew team ran a 10K for the virtual Marine Corps Marathon in support of teammate Katherine Scott ’21 and in memory of her late father, Col. John R. Scott, a United States Marine. The team included 36 runners from 4 different countries and 7 states.

The Next Generation of Leaders in Social Justice Helping Others’ Voices (and Votes!) Be Heard Kat Lanzalotto ’21 hit the ground running this fall as she led voter registration initiatives for Notre

Dame’s senior class while maintaining a schedule of civic duty in her home community as well. A Rock the Vote Ambassador, past Summer Intern in Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan’s office and member of Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon’s Youth Cabinet, Kat was able to register over 85% of eligible Notre Dame seniors to vote in this year’s election. Her efforts resulted in the Academy receiving the Governor’s Civic Engagement Gold Award, being only one of 24 schools, and one of two private schools, in the state to receive this recognition.

intern at TurnUp, a new app that aims to get young people engaged and informed about politics and social justice. Emma was a part of the beta-testing of the app prior to its launch and now compiles and helps to distribute research on local activists, events and important resources to be shared with users looking to get involved in their community.

In addition to her internship, Emma has become a High School Ambassador for the new technology. Alexis Brandolini ’97 (pictured above with her sister, Krissy Brandolini Edginton ’98) played Varsity field hockey and

lacrosse and was named Captain for both teams her senior year. In 1996, she helped lead Notre Dame’s field hockey team to an InterAcademic League Championship. Alexis was recognized on the AllMain Line Teams for both sports and earned a position on the Pennsylvania-area lacrosse team for the National Tournament in 1997. After graduation, Alexis was a full scholarship, Division-I lacrosse player at the University of Richmond, where she was twice named Captain and an All Atlantic-10 Conference player, leading her team to the Atlantic-10 championship. Alexis earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and went on to earn a Master of Science in Business with a concentration in Branding and Strategy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Alexis moved to Baltimore, MD where she would raise her daughter, Barrett. After much success in her professional career, Alexis co-founded People Development Group to help teams and organizations think like a problem-solver in the Special Operations Forces, and elevate people’s interpersonal skills for navigating today’s complex environment and rapid pace of change. Alexis is a Class of 2020-2021 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee for both field hockey and lacrosse.

She went on to be named captain, a three time All-American, and the 2001 All-Delco Swimmer of the Year. In 2003, Brigit’s medley relay team that included Stephanie Naylor ’06 and Lisa Burger ’06, and Brigit’s younger sister, Briana Barry ’07, broke the school record. That record remained in place for 16 years until it was broken in the 2019 season. Brigit was also recognized all four years on the First Team for All-Delaware County, All-Main Line and All Inter-Academic. After graduation, Brigit went on to have an impressive career at Davidson College, a Division-I program, where she cocaptained the swim team her senior year. Brigit is currently serving as the Head Varsity Swimming Coach at her alma mater, mentoring a talented group of swimmers. Life has come full circle for Brigit, as a decorated swimmer, a successful coach and now as the Class of 2020-2021 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee.

life as a Dominican Sister, selflessly sacrificing for the service of others and making a difference in countless communities across the nation. Prior to her remarkable life of service in the Convent, she cherished her time at The Square and shared her perspective on the inspiring education she received.

“The Notre Dame Academy Rittenhouse Square Class of 1950 has an unusual history. The school had been closed for a number of years in the 1940’s and reopened with our class in 1946. We graduated with 16 and there were 84 students in the entire high school. The Sisters had a strong influence on us in those formative years and we often mentioned that our class was united. When anyone had a party they just announced it, and everyone was invited, for we were all comfortable with each other.

Sister Catherine Clare was our first teacher and everyone loved her from the very beginning. She was inspiring and a major influence, because her religion class was like a homily. In the following years, we had Sr. Catherine Joanne, Sr. Marie Gertrude and Sr. Jeanne Marie. From singing with Sr. Virginia to doing needlework with Sr. Paulina, we were inspired. Sr. Mary of the Passion was the librarian and we thought she was brilliant. We even had gym and speech class with outside teachers. All of the Sisters were wonderful and lovable in their own way and made our high school experience memorable.

Out of loyalty and love for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, I considered entering with them although I had a strong conviction I never wanted to teach. Sr. Superior advised me to forget about entering since I was so undecided but if I thought of it in the future, to give it consideration. Two years after graduation, I entered the Dominican Sisters in Elkins Park. When I look back at the growing pains of the teen years, I am deeply grateful for the Notre Dame Sisters, my years at Notre Dame Academy Rittenhouse Square and the Class of 1950. I wonder if I would be a Dominican Sister today if I had not been so blessed. I often use the Scripture quote that was on a plaque in the chapel: I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of thy house and the place where thy glory dwells.”

It was 65 years ago that I pronounced vows as a Dominican Sister. It was an enormous act to entrust my life to God, but what a blessing it is to have been ‘claimed’ by God. My heart overflows with gratitude. Never did I dream it would be so challenging, so heartbreaking, so joyful and such an adventure. The only thing I can say is, “thank you”!

Alumnae CLASS NOTES 1950s Loretta Hartnett Sq. ’55, President of the Notre Dame Rittenhouse Square Alumnae Association, has been a church musician and organist since 5th grade. She completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music on 20th Street in Philadelphia, across from the 20th street entrance of Notre Dame Rittenhouse Square. Presently, she is the organist and music director at Christ’s Community Church in Drexel Hill, PA, a position she has held for over 43 years.

Dr. Betty Anne Moriarty Clayton ’57 (pictured below) wrote a memoir on the life of her mother, Elizabeth Catherine Higgins-Moriarty SQ ’31.

Elizabeth’s legacy includes a love of learning and a devotion to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

1980s Karen Backe O’Brien ’82 is now one of the Wilson Reading teachers at AIM Academy in Conshohocken, a school that teaches students with language based learning disabilities. Karen was teaching kindergarten – 5th grade and has recently shifted to teaching 6th – 12th grade students.

Emily McDonnell Stueben ’89 has worked for 25 years as an Office Manager at Doyle and McDonnell, Inc., a family owned and operated full landscaping business. Emily graduated from Villanova University with a degree in Liberal Arts and a Minor in Business and Corporate Communications.

1990s Bonnie Corr Morrow ’90 is an Assistant Vice President of Claims at Philadelphia Insurance Companies. Bonnie’s daughter, Mary, is a member of the Class of 2024 here at the Academy.

Cerise Knowles James ’91 joined the Alumnae Executive Board, as a member at-large in the fall of 2020.

1960s Mary Jane O’Connell ’62 spent 50 years managing guest rentals on a small Caribbean island and is now enjoying retirement in Puerto Rico.

Marianne Kirby Rhodes ’64 marked the 75th Anniversary of D-Day and the 1944 invasion of Europe by following her father’s U.S. Army engineer unit’s battle route across France, Normandy, Brittany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. She celebrated Bastille Day in Normandy with friends. The trip included a visit to Buchenwald Concentration camp and ended in Berlin with visits to Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate.

1970s Mary Ann Gillespie Pester ’70 is living in Simi Valley, CA and teaching children with disabilities and special needs.

Kristin Toland Spengler ’92 (pictured above right with her family) received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Georgetown University and her Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Kristin is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and spends much of her time in the NICU, taking care of her young patients and their parents. Inspired by her son, James’ first-hand experience and recovery from a rare

cancer, Kristin founded the 9th Floor Foundation and has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to support families battling the financial realities of the illness.

Laura Riley Thiele ’93 began working as the Chief People Officer for Episerver after previously holding the position as Head of Human Resources at SAP. Bridget Ward ’93 is the owner of a family business, Bridget Ward Travel LLC. She has been serving for over two decades and has received numerous awards for her work, including receiving the Best Travel Consultant of the Main Line Media News.

Lisa Raymond ’91 Lisa Raymond ’91 was inducted into the prestigious Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in November, as part of the Class of 2020 Inductees, for her professional accomplishments in the sport of tennis. Lisa’s career achievements include being a National Champion, International Champion, Wimbledon Champion, and an Olympic Bronze Medalist in the 2012 Sydney Games. Lisa shares, “I am so incredibly humbled to even be in consideration for the Hall of Fame. To be among the greatest tennis legends of all time is something I can’t even get my arms around. It is an honor I don’t even have the right words for. I feel so blessed to have been able to make a career out of something I have loved doing since I was a kid and continue to love every day as a coach.”

Christine Doherty Kondra ’96, Co-owner and Chef of the Cornerstone Bistro in Wayne, PA and her sister, Erin Doherty Kreszl ’99 founded The Bee Foundation to increase awareness and support preventative research for brain aneurysms in honor of their cousin, Jennifer Sedney. In less than four years, they have raised over $750,000 directly impacting lives, supporting preventative research and lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill. The Bee Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) organization and they recently celebrated their 5th Anniversary.

Grace Bernicker ’07 (pictured below) is a singer and songwriter and often performs as a duo with a guitar player. Grace spent 2016 living and writing in Nashville, getting back to her roots in pop and soul. As an independent artist, she’s played in over 200 shows and most recently opened for Jon McLaughlin at the Bryn Mawr Summer Concert Series. Grace is the Founder and Marketing Consultant at Social Graces Creative.

Maya M. Noronha ’01 was appointed to serve as principal policy advisor to the Commissioner of the Administration for Children, Youth, and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Maya, who has worked on robustly enforcing civil rights laws, such as those prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race and religion, has attended the White House’s annual inter-religious celebration of Diwali with fellow Indian-American Federal officials since 2017.

Arianna and a team of attorneys from the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP, working with the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project, persuaded Maryland’s highest court to reverse the murder conviction of David Faulkner, who was wrongfully convicted in 2001.

Arianna’s team successfully argued that newlydiscovered evidence of innocence implicates an alternative suspect and casts doubt on the credibility of a key state’s witness, requiring the conviction to be overturned.

Kristen Santerian ’08 is the Acting COO, Global Marketing and Corporate Communications the financial planning and investment management firm, BlackRock.

Kristen gave the Academy's commencement address on Saturday, May 30, 2020. Before joining BlackRock, Kristen co-founded PennMoveOut, a consumer logistics company based in Philadelphia, PA. Her experience also includes service as a contributing writer and research analyst where she worked on the Forbes Special Situation Survey and contributed to the publication of the Forbes / CFA Institute Investment Course. Meghan Acker O’Brien ’04 received her Executive Master of Business Administration degree from Georgetown University in 2015 after graduating from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science degree. Meghan is the Director of Waldorf Astoria Brand Management at Hilton Corporation in Tyson’s Corner, VA.

Holly Flynn ’11 (pictured below) married Ross Slutsky on August 10, 2019 at the Crystal Tea Room in Philadelphia, PA. Holly’s bridesmaids included Mary Rose Davis ’11, Devon Gorbey ’11, and Clare Spence ’11. The bride and groom are both attorneys in Washington, D.C.

Ashley Hobson ’10 is an associate at Freeman Mathis & Gary, LLP. Her practice focuses on defending clients in general liability matters and employment litigation. Previously, she held a position at Litchfield Cavo and also clerked for the Honorable Samuel J. Ragonese of the New Jersey Superior Court, Trial Division. During law school at Villanova, Ashley served as an intern with the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission, a certified legal intern with the Villanova Civil Justice Clinic, and as the co-chair of the National Trial Team.

Molly Petersen ’10 is a Studio Manager for Barry’s Bootcamp in Philadelphia, PA. After graduating from Saint Joseph’s University, Molly has worked as a Key Leader at Lululemon and received her 200 and 300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification.

Erin Haggerty ’10 (pictured below) married John Larkin on April 18, 2020 in a very small ceremony at Providence Friends Meeting in Media. Her sister, Laura Haggerty ’13 attended via video conference.

Eryka Lynn Waller ’10 (pictured below) attended Temple University and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Immediately after graduating, Eryka was accepted into the Advanced Standing Program at Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research where she obtained her Masters of Social Services. Eryka is a licensed social worker in the state of PA and has worked as a medical social worker, school social worker, early intervention social worker, and adoption social worker. Now, Eryka owns her own business, The Quinn Center for Performing Arts, where she uses her background of social work combined with performing arts to impact youth in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas.

Executive Board Member of the Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief. Kristen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and currently resides in New York City. Kristen married Dimitri Petrosian on October 24, 2020.

DeAnna Supplee ’08 (pictured above) is an actress in New York City. She married Malcolm Evans on February 1, 2020 in Philadelphia at One North Broad, after meeting at the University of Pennsylvania over 10 years ago. Notre Dame Alumnae were in attendance including: Rachel Criner ’08, Juliann Downs ’08, and Dawn Robinson ’02. Additionally, Alexa Stoczko ’08 was a bridesmaid, along with DeAnna’s sisters Jennifer Supplee Nearn ’02 and Charnae Supplee ’10. DeAnna’s aunt, Deborah James ’79 created the floral arrangements and decor.

Charnae Supplee ’10 is an associate at Latham & Watkins in New York, NY. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and received her Juris Doctor from The George Washington University Law School.

Kristen McNeill ’11 (pictured above) married Graeme Nicholls on September 4, 2020 in a small ceremony. The couple plans to celebrate with a reception in September 2021.

ALUMNAE CLASS NOTES

Gracie Rosenbach ’11, an international development professional with experience in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, received a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Virginia. Gracie has successfully managed and collaborated with diverse teams to implement programs and research in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, including extensive field work in East Africa, Bangladesh, and Papua New Guinea.

Gracie is currently the Rwanda Country Program Manager at International Food Policy Research Institute and is skilled in data and policy analysis, with experience in agricultural and economic development, humanitarian aid, global health, water and sanitation, and education.

Chiara DiGiallorenzo ’12 graduated from the University of Miami in 2016 where she studied Journalism and Art History. She went on to work at IMG Models, then began freelance management for visual artists. In 2019, she was hired to head the Marketing and Events for Cultured Magazine and has recently moved into managing two visual artists, Trevor Andrew and Lefty Out There, who have collaborated with Gucci and many known brands such as Facebook, Google, and Adidas.

Lindsay Hueston ’12 is a Digital Communications Specialist for the National Alliance to End Homelessness in Washington, D.C. Katie Schultz ’12 (pictured below) and her fiancé, Jackson Agraz, were engaged on December 14, 2019 and plan to be married on May 1, 2021.

Jenna Meissner ’12 (pictured below) is engaged to be married to Tate Jozokos. The couple got engaged on June 13, 2020. Jenna has enjoyed a successful career with PHL17 Morning News team since 2015, where she is currently the morning traffic anchor.

Kaitlin Marsini ’14 (pictured below with her family and mother, Colleen Marsini ’78) is in pursuit of a law degree at Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law, after graduating from the University of Delaware. Last spring, Kaitlin interned with a global telecommunications and technology company called CommScope. To gain more litigation experience, Kaitlin is currently a law clerk at Saltz Mongeluzzi & Bendesky, a personal injury plaintiff ’s firm in Philadelphia.

Nicole Panoc ’12 is pursuing a law degree at Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law. Prior to that, Nicole was a paralegal specialist for nearly four years at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. Christina Oliver ’13 joined the campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY) team in April 2020 and currently serves as the Major Gifts & Events Manager. In her role, Christina stewards relationships with CFSY’s donor base and works to engage the community through events. At Duke University, Christina studied Public Policy, where she focused her studies on her passion for criminal justice reform and education.

Aria Kovalovich ’14 is a Magna Cum Laude graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a double major in Sustainability and Environmental Management and Cognitive Neuroscience. Aria’s Senior Thesis was on Nationalism and Climate Change Attitudes. She also wrote an article for Penn Sustainability Review titled, “The Future of Waste-to-Energy in Urban India.” She is currently a Research Assistant at the U.S. House of Representatives and serves on the Subcommittee on Environment at the U.S. House of Representatives on Science, Space, and Technology. Aria writes bills, prepares documents for Congressional hearings, and helps conduct oversight regarding science issues at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other entities.

Vicky Brooks ’16 created and developed her own business, Body By V, an all-natural, vegan, and handmade skincare line.

Maura Maguire ’16 is a Pennsylvania State University (PSU) Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications Class of 2020 graduate.

Maura majored in Public Relations with a minor in International Studies. While at PSU, she completed a number of internships at Vig It, Fox 29 News, and Devine and Partners.

Jordan Pietrafitta ’16 took photography classes and was heavily involved in the student-run magazine, Valley, when she attended Pennsylvania State University. Prior to her graduation, she launched a photography business, along with a sustainable fashion brand called Earthly: For The Planet. Earthly came into existence because she wanted to create a brand that is inclusive and accessible for people of all races, genders, and socioeconomic statuses while striving for zero-waste and sustainability.

Sophia Recchilungo ’16 (pictured below) graduated from Saint Joseph’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a successful career as a Division-1 track and field student-athlete. Sophia is focused in food marketing and gained experience in the food retail industry through a leadership development and store operations internship program at Giant Heirloom Market.

Kate Biedermann ’18, a student at Hamilton College, was the recent recipient of the Alfred J. and A. Barrett Seaman Prizes in Writing at Hamilton’s annual Convocation ceremony this past August, for a piece she wrote for an independent study. Subsequently, her work on the paper inspired her to co-author a chapter of a book titled, “Natural Things: Ecologies of Knowledge in the Early Modern World.” The book is awaiting publishing and currently going through the editorial process. The chapter Kate co-authored is called “Ambergris: From Sea to Scent in Renaissance Italy.”

Ashlee Broaddus ’18 a pre-law junior at Chestnut Hill College, started her business called FemiAsha this past summer. Ashlee sells organic, toxin-free homemade soaps, candles and skincare. A fall-themed candle called “Hocus Pocus” scented with pumpkin and harvest spice is one of her latest products on Etsy.

Healthcare Heroes

Dr. Patricia Henwood ’98 (pictured above left) is an emergency room doctor at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and an associate professor of emergency medicine at Thomas Jefferson University’s Kimmel Medical College. Trish helped fight the Ebola outbreak in Liberia and now focuses on global health and infectious diseases, leading the Emergency Medicine COVID-19 Task Force at Jefferson Health. Trish recently wrote an opinion piece for The Philadelphia Inquirer urging the public to observe social distancing and exercise patience during this pandemic.

Karine Keshgegian ’10 received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Chester University.

After graduating, she worked at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for four years and is currently working at the University of Pennsylvania on the oncology and COVID-19 floors.

Kristin McGowan ’05 (pictured right) received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Delaware in 2009. She has specialized in pediatric care working on the brain and spinal cord injury unit of Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD. She now works in their PACT division, a specialized child care center for children who have medical conditions and developmental disabilities requiring daily nursing care. Kristin has held various nursing roles supporting inpatient pediatric units within the Johns Hopkins Healthcare System. On December 18, 2021, she will marry Justen Freeman.

ALUMNAE CLASS NOTES Sophia Dell’Arciprete ’18 is an art major at Saint Joseph’s University, focusing on photography. Her photograph was selected for an online exhibit called the “Six Feet Photography Project,” as part of the Click Photography Festival in Durham, NC. Olivia Mianulli ’18 (pictured below) is a junior Public Relations major at Temple University. She recently became the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for Temple’s Chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). In this role, Olivia is responsible for cultivating diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the chapter through guest speakers, events, and social media representation.

She also ensures members feel properly represented and included within the chapter, and aligns Temple PRSSA with diversity and inclusion initiatives.
