Message from the HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Notre Dame Community, Welcome to Visions, a celebration of the accomplishments of our vibrant, engaged Notre Dame community. I am grateful to you - our alumnae, current families, past parents, and Trustees - for your support of the Academy of Notre Dame. This truly is a school that is dedicated to educating and enriching the lives of young women - attending to the heart, mind, and spirit of every student. We believe deeply in our Catholic faith and identity, inspired by the charism of Saint Julie. In addition to academics, the faculty and staff are deeply invested in the well-being of our students which reaches beyond the classroom to service, arts, athletics, and leadership. In this issue, you will see our girls in action through their many community projects and service opportunities. The Community Dress Shop is one endeavor that shows our girls’ engagement beyond the Gates in meaningful endeavors that enrich their spirit and their heart. Last summer, we hosted our inaugural International STEM Symposium with five sister schools from around the world. Students engaged in collaborative problem solving, academic engagement on topics from health to sustainability, and cross cultural dialogue. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Mae Jemison, challenged the girls to recognize the value in working alongside “people who might know things you don’t.” Pictures do tell the story of a week that expanded minds and developed sisterhood. We continue to invest in and pay attention to the well-being of our girls, which impacts their learning and their success in the classroom, on the field, and on stage. In teaching the girls “what they need to know for life,” we prepare them for life beyond the Gates and ensure each girl is empowered to find her purpose, use her voice, and have the courage to lead. At ND, the spiritual presence of the goodness of God guides the development of each student and provides an extra element of well-being. As you read the stories and examine the pictures, I hope that you see the joy that I experience every day at Notre Dame. In peace, simplicity, and courage,

Dr. Laura M. Hotchkiss

MISSION STATEMENT The Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school, commits itself to the education of young women in grades 6 through 12 for responsible living in a global society. VISIONS FALL 2023

“It was a wonderful opportunity to make friendships globally. The squads, classes, and teamwork provided spaces for interaction, but so did the free time and activities planned outside of the school itself.” -Colegio San Silvestre Student

Using Our “Agency” On Friday, July 21, Notre Dame was honored to host Dr. Mae Jemison, engineer, physician, and the first woman of color to travel into space aboard the shuttle Endeavour. Author of the autobiography Where the Wind Goes, Dr. Jemison shared with students and visitors what led her to NASA and the impact and importance of women leaders in STEM fields. Dr. Jemison began her talk by explaining to students the importance of agency. “We have something I like to call ‘agency’ … that means you get to determine who you are. You have your own determination. Sometimes people want to tell you what you can do or who you can be.” She also explained the other piece of agency, beginning with the proverb “‘Even the sharpest blade can’t cut its own handle’ … In order for you to learn and move forward you do need help from others and you need to help others yourself, as well.” There are people who help pave the way for others, and for Dr. Jemison, one of those people was Nichelle Nichols, who played Commander Uhura in the Star Trek TV series. She used her agency to make room for other women, women of color in particular, to imagine themselves in space, as well. 4

“Dr. Jemison exemplifies what someone in STEM can achieve, and was the perfect ending to an incredible Symposium. Her presentation emphasized both resiliency and the importance of collaboration, two skills vital to STEM and life overall. As a teacher, it's hard to identify singular moments when you make a profound impact on students' lives; Dr. Jemison's talk was easily one of those moments. I'm beyond grateful to Notre Dame for having her come to campus; her presence here was truly ‘out of this world!’”

“The symposium was life changing. To be able to

meet every girl in such a beautiful way was such a

blessing in my life and summer.”

She also told stories about what led her to space, how people reacted when she wanted to become a scientist, and how she did not get there on her own. When she was a young student in the 1970s, Dr. Jemison shared with her teachers her dream of becoming a scientist. They responded with “don’t you mean a nurse?” Now, there's nothing wrong with being a nurse, Dr. Jemison explained, but there is also no reason why a girl could not become a scientist. Dr. Jemison also sprinkled fascinating space facts into her speech, from rocket lift-offs and the explosions that take place to interstellar, what space exploration looks like today, and the vast expanse of space. “Alfa Centauri, our closest neighboring star is 4.2 light years away - 25 trillion miles. That’s the distance light travels in 4.2 years. Light travels from the sun to the earth in 8 minutes, and that’s 93 million miles,” explained Dr. Jemison. 4 “I was able to meet so many new people … the whole STEM Symposium really made it clear that we’re all just teenage girls, and even though we’re from all over, we’re able to make connections and get to know each other in the same way as we get to know our school friends. It was such a special experience that we were given, and I appreciated every minute of it.” -Notre Dame Student

“In Global Health Issues specifically, I learned so much about what’s happening in other countries and it was really refreshing to be able to talk to the international girls and hear about their own personal experiences and ideas.” -Notre Dame Student

VISIONS FALL 2023

From weather systems and climate change to traveling and surviving in other parts of the universe, “Space is not just for rocket scientists and millionaires. It influences all of our lives, right now, today,” said Dr. Jemison. She urged students to understand that they, and all human beings, have a responsibility to pay attention to what is happening in the world. “We think that just because something is on the other side of the world it doesn’t affect us,” she explained. “We should know better than that now.”

“This long-awaited week turned out to be the highlight of my 13 years at Notre Dame. To witness 82 students from around the globe collaborating and making lifelong friendships, all on our campus, was a very moving experience. I was so proud of the openness, humility, and kindness on display each day from the students and faculty alike. Students are still reaching out to share how this experience has changed their perspectives, their future plans, and their sense of purpose.” -Nora Moffat, Director of the Center for Global Leadership

COMMENCEMENT

Celebrating the

Class of 2023

On Saturday, June 3, 2023, family, faculty, and friends gathered on the Mansion lawn to celebrate the Class of 2023 on their journey inside and beyond the Gates. As Lorna Petrizzo shared in her invocation,

Good and loving God, you have brought us with grace and goodness to the dawn of this Commencement day … As women of faith, we have learned to believe in ourselves because the good God, first and foremost, believes in us … As women of charity, our hearts have been stretched and defined through service-learning, becoming, in the words of St. Julie Billiart, women with ‘hearts as wide as the world.’ As we go forth from our beloved Notre Dame today, may we carry her wisdom, be light for the world, and make known your goodness to everyone we meet.

We are certain, Yellow Class of 2023, that the world will know the strength of your faith and the goodness of your hearts.

VISIONS FALL 2023

When you leave these Gates today, I encourage you to just go for it. Whatever it is you want to do or be, you can. St. Julie said ‘Decide, my dear – better mistakes than paralysis.’ I encourage you to take risks, to try – and if you don’t succeed the first time, try again. Never be paralyzed by fear. Don’t let fear stop you from whatever it is in your heart and mind to do or be … This is your chance to believe in yourself and jump … Follow your heart, follow your passion, and everything else will line up … Be authentically you. -Eryka Lynn Waller ’10, Commencement Speaker

Notre Dame has given me the tools to create and construct a world exactly as I desire it for myself. As we prepare to enter a world fraught with uncertainty, both environmental, economic and political — all wrapped into one Gordian knot — we know that we can make sense of it through careful dialogue and research, skills honed inside the Gates … No one is better positioned to take on new challenges and embrace the unique chaos of our world. Just 50 years ago, the idea of coeducation was startling, even dangerous, to the all-male Ivy League schools. I quote: ‘For God’s sake, for Dartmouth’s sake, and for everyone’s sake, keep the damned women out.’ Today, I say to you: the damned women are coming, whether you’re ready or not. -Lindsay McBride ’23, Valedictorian

Growing up in an all-girls’ school environment, we have gained the confidence and determination needed to succeed in any field — maledominated or not. Education in the scope of the real world is our key to the future — all we have to do now is unlock the door. We entered Notre Dame with training wheels. Now, we can harness the power of intellect and use the charism of Saint Julie to propel us forward on any path, leaving our training wheels behind. -Natalie Maye ’23, Salutatorian

ALUMNAE CLASS NOTES Johanna Murphy ’21 wrapped up her first year at Rutgers University by winning the BIG 10 championships in May. Johanna shared, “My boat became the first in the history of the university to win a 1st place B1G 10 championship title. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to represent women in sports at the Rutgers v. Bucknell men’s basketball game to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. I opened 2023 by being the first National Anthem singer for men’s wrestling in the history of Rutgers University at another celebration of Title IX. I am so proud to go to a school that values and celebrates women’s equality in sports in so many ways. Cherishing how far women’s sports have come often helps me appreciate my time at Notre Dame where women’s education and achievement is so valued.” 6

Beyond the Gates 2023 On March 7, Notre Dame alumnae Cheryl Kennedy ’83, Megan Muir ’11, Kira Lans Bourne ’16, Gwenn Daniels Nolan ’01, Meghan McCullough Ansel ’10, Katherine McKenna ’04, Maggie Malloy ’13, Hannah Fuss ’16, and Rosemary Connors ’01 returned to campus to share their wisdom with the Class of 2023 at our third annual Alumnae Mentorship Program “Beyond the Gates.” From careers and college life to mental health and how ND prepared them for life, the insight shared by these nine exceptional women was priceless.

Alumnae Induction On May 31, 2023, the Class of 2023 was officially inducted into the Notre Dame Alumnae Association. Alumnae moms and relatives of the Class of 2023 distributed pins to graduates, then posed for a photo with their graduates and the trademark sunflower, a beloved symbol seen throughout Notre Dame’s campus.

Emma McGuinn ’22 won the 60 Hurdles at the Tufts National Qualifier with a finals time of 8.83. She was the top qualifier of the 10 competitors at 8.85 seconds before winning by .05 over the runner-up in the final.
