LETTER FROM THE

BOARD CHAIR In June, my family and I proudly watched my daughter Lucy receive her diploma as one of Notre Dame’s graduating members of the Class of 2018. As a parent of three Notre Dame graduates and as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I have seen how every aspect of a Notre Dame education prepares young women to make their mark as confident, compassionate women of faith, in college and throughout the years to follow. While Notre Dame challenges every student to dream and achieve, it is the tradition of Saint Julie and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur that truly defines a woman of Notre Dame. I am proud that my daughters and all the students who graduate from this remarkable institution are well prepared to meet the triumphs and challenges ahead, trusting always in the goodness of God. It is my privilege to serve Notre Dame as Board Chair, and on behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank our outstanding administration, faculty and staff for their continued dedication to our mission and to our students. I also would like to recognize the service of our 2017-2018 Board members, whom you see listed here, for working tirelessly to advance Notre Dame’s strategic vision. Finally, I thank each member of our Notre Dame community for your loyalty and gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Your support is an inspiration to us all. Sincerely,

George Van Kula Chair, Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM THE

PRESIDENT

I am pleased to report on the progress and milestones achieved this past year as we continue to implement Notre Dame’s Strategic Vision 2015-2020. The 2017-2018 academic year opened with a record enrollment, welcoming 550 students to our community. Interest from prospective families remains high as we are committed to attracting, enrolling and retaining talented and engaged students. On December 20, 2017, the Notre Dame community celebrated the groundbreaking for our new 30,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Center for STEM Education. We are grateful to the many donors who have supported the Academy’s comprehensive campaign, OUR TIME to INSPIRE, even as we continue to raise money to complete this STEM initiative. Since the groundbreaking, construction has moved from site preparation to the development of the building footprint. Construction now continues on the basement, footers, foundation, and elevator shaft. The Center includes technology enabled active learning (TEAL) environments, with eight science laboratories, three lab prep rooms, eight mathematics classrooms, a design thinking and entrepreneurship classroom and labs dedicated to design and innovation, robotics and coding.

Dr. Judith A. Dwyer When completed in 2019, the Center for STEM Education will serve as a dynamic learning hub that supports regional, national, and international gatherings, inspiring continued innovation and collaboration among our students and faculty. To this end, Notre Dame recently received a $50,000 matching grant from the prestigious Edward E. Ford Foundation. Our proposal to the Foundation called for the development and implementation of an International Sisters in STEM 2020 Symposium in coordination with our Center for Global Leadership. In collaboration with Notre Dame students, the Sisters in STEM Symposium will bring together international high school teams from our sister school network to work on one of four tracks: design thinking and entrepreneurship, environmental science, programming/engineering and the life sciences. A special track for faculty will run parallel to the student teams and

Notre Dame faculty Francesca de la Torre and Changru Tu (far left and right) accompanied Notre Dame students Taylor Brooks and Michelle Zheng (second and third from left) as representatives of the Academy’s Center for Global Leadership on their trip to China and Taiwan.

will focus on project based learning within a “third teacher” environment. This 2020 Symposium will showcase our new Center for STEM Education and will include engagement with the University of Pennsylvania and other area universities, as well as international corporate organizations. Notre Dame’s Center for Global Leadership continues to expand. I am pleased to welcome the Michael Ham Memorial College, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and The Study, Montreal, Canada to our international learning community. This year, the Academy hosted students and educators from our sister schools in Japan and Singapore while Notre Dame students participated in educational seminars in Canada, Peru, China and Taiwan. Through the Center for Global Leadership, our students experience a deeper understanding of, and responsibility for, the diversity and complexity of our world.

The excellent quality of the Notre Dame experience continues to be recognized. In the spring, Business Insider selected Notre Dame as the “most beautiful school in Pennsylvania.” More recently, the readers of Main Line Today voted the Academy as the “Best Private School” on the Main Line and Western Suburbs. These accolades continue to reflect our commitment to Notre Dame’s Catholic Mission and the great legacy of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Thank you for your participation in our vibrant community. Sincerely, Judith A. Dwyer, Ph.D. President

This year, Notre Dame established a new multi-disciplinary department, English and the Arts, in recognition of the long tradition of combining the academic study of the arts with the practice of creative expression itself. Since ancient times, literature, music, and the visual arts have been regarded as interlocking spheres of creative expression. While we continued to offer a traditional sequence of courses in English, Fine Arts, and Performing Arts, we also embraced a renewed commitment to cross-curricular collaboration.

REPORT FROM THE

PRINCIPAL

Using the 2015-2020 Strategic Vision as our roadmap, our continued focus on collaboration, leadership, and innovation led to many new initiatives and opportunities for our students during the 2017-2018 academic year, including: • Development of a faculty-based academic advisory program for students, beginning with the Class of 2021 • Introduction of new electives, including Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship, Media and Society, and Theater History and Design • Implementation of the DiLL software that allows every student’s MacBook to become a digital language lab • Expansion of our sister school network within the Center for Global Leadership • Educational and cultural exchange opportunities for both middle and high school students with our sister schools in Asia, Canada, and South America • Launch of the Global Citizen Scholars and STEM Scholars of Excellence programs • Expansion of co-curricular activities to include Model UN and Odyssey of the Mind The upcoming 2018-2019 academic year holds great promise, with increased opportunities for leadership development and collaboration for our middle school students, expansion of the academic advisory program to include the Class of 2022, development of a middle school academic advisory program, and the addition of a third college counselor to provide additional support and services to students and families at every grade level.

Jacqueline Coccia, MA Principal

ENROLLMENT

MANAGEMENT REPORT I am pleased to report that 2017-2018 was another record year for enrollment at Notre Dame. Last fall, we welcomed 550 talented students from throughout the Greater Philadelphia region and enrollment projections for the 2018-2019 school year remain strong. This year, four new applicants and two rising Notre Dame eighth graders will enter high school with "Saint Julie Awards." These special grants were introduced to honor students who embody the charism of St. Julie Billiart by demonstrating exceptional character, leadership, and service to their schools and communities. These awards were offered for the first time this year, along with new scholarships in STEM, Global Citizenship, and Visual and Performing Arts. Implementation of a new admissions portal this past year allows Notre Dame to offer a more modern, mobile, and user-friendly online experience for prospective families as well as increase our ability to collect and track important enrollment data at key points in the cycle. A revised application timeline and fall admissions plan for middle school applicants made earlier notification of admission and financial aid awards possible. Finally, the admissions team recognizes Mrs. Diane Sander upon her retirement after 34 years of dedicated service to the Academy. Her legacy will continue in the welcoming spirit and warmth of this community. Thank you as always to our current ND families and dedicated alumnae, faculty, and staff for your support and the generous gift of your time, feedback, and recommendations. It remains our privilege to serve as stewards for all families who enter our gates.

BUSINESS OFFICE REPORT Goal four of the Academy’s Strategic Vision 2015-2020 calls for continued strengthening of Notre Dame’s financial position, and I am pleased to report that we concluded the 2017-2018 school year with a balanced budget. We continue to strengthen the Academy’s financial position through the thoughtful stewardship of our resources.

Operating Income

Tuition and Fees 84%

There was a modest increase in tuition, and enrollment increased from 537 in the previous year to an all-time high of 550 in the 2017-2018 school year, which continues to reflect the recognition of the value of a Notre Dame education. Financial aid also was consistent with the previous year. The Financial Aid Committee’s continued goal is to maximize the utility of budgeted financial aid dollars, as set out on the five-year Strategic Vision. Notre Dame’s endowment totaled $8.5 million by the end of the fiscal year thanks to generous contributions and prudent oversight by the Academy’s Investment Committee. In the coming years we are hopeful for significant growth in the endowment to support the new facilities envisioned on the Campus Master Plan. The 2017-2018 year focused on enhancements to classrooms to create “Apple Classrooms,” and upgrades to the Aimee Willard Gymnasium sound system. This summer, we renovated the heating and air conditioning system in Cuvilly gymnasium. The construction of the Center for STEM Education commenced in December 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2019 as part of the Phase II Campus Master Plan. Center for STEM Education construction costs will be supported by the OUR TIME to INSPIRE campaign gifts as well as bridge financing with TD Bank obtained during the 2017-2018 academic year. Student experience on campus was further enhanced with the implementation of the 1:1 MacBook Program for the high school. This enhancement completes the implementation of the 1:1 MacBook Program for the entire school.

ADVANCEMENT OFFICE REPORT Thank you to the hundreds of Alumnae, Parents, Grandparents and Friends of Notre Dame who supported the Academy with their generous outpouring of time, talent, and treasure this past year. The exceptional education and experience provided to our talented young women would not be possible without this overwhelming support. Goal six of the 2015-2020 Strategic Vision OUR TIME to INSPIRE calls us to create a culture of engagement and support. In the last fiscal year, we made significant progress in advancing this vision. Highlights include: • The comprehensive OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign is moving along at a record-setting pace under the leadership of our campaign co-chairs: Sr. Helen Bellew, SNDdeN, Pat Burns P’08’10’16, Agnes Gayhardt ’83 P’17, Barb Riley ’90 P’19’21’23, Judi Taylor P’12 and Andrew Willis P’08’13’18. These dedicated individuals oversaw the Groundbreaking Celebration for our new Center for STEM Education in December, and currently are in the process of securing the necessary funds to finalize Phase II of the campaign. • The Notre Dame Fund remains the Academy’s community wide fundraising priority. Hundreds of donors come together each year in support of this fund, as it directly impacts every student and ensures that the Notre Dame tradition of excellence is continued. We are especially grateful for the leadership of Andrea Shank ’90 P’20’22 and her committee for their energies this year in raising nearly half a million dollars to support our young women during the 2017-2018 school year. • Opportunities for meaningful Alumnae engagement continued this year under the leadership of our Alumnae Association Executive Boards led by President Kimberly Tierney Pegg ’88 P’22 and Rittenhouse Square President

Loretta Salvadore Hartnett ’55. We are grateful to the more than 500 Alumnae who attended Notre Dame events this year, and officially welcome the 99 graduates from the Class of 2018 as the newest members of our Alumnae community!

• We are indebted to Kristen and Pat Traynor P’18 and Shannon and Pat Gillespie P’19, Golf Classic Co-Chairs, Collette Murphy P’22, BLAST Chair, and their hardworking committee members for both their friend-raising and fundraising efforts. Through their dedication, the golf outing and our re-imagined BLAST event this year added important funds to help support all Notre Dame students. • Thanks to tireless efforts of Notre Dame Parents’ Association led by Liz McDonald P’19’23, numerous social, service, and spiritual events were held during the school year to enrich our community. Through their collective efforts, $80,000 was generously contributed to the Academy. Please know that our door is always open, and we value your feedback. The Advancement team and I stand at the ready as we strive to strengthen our efforts in support of current and future generations of Notre Dame women. With gratitude,

Donor PROFILE Charles and Pat Genuardi P’93’97 GP’19’20 As Parents of Alumnae and now grandparents of Nina ’19 and Lillian ’20, your connection with the Academy of Notre Dame spans many years. In your opinion, how does Notre Dame differentiate itself from other schools? Notre Dame is a Catholic, all female school with a low student to teacher ratio. This ideal structure facilitates a close rapport between faculty and students that enables the teachers to help students succeed academically and to encourage each student’s individual interests whether it be athletic, creative or service oriented. What qualities do you see in your daughters that you believe Notre Dame will be instrumental in instilling in your granddaughters? Notre Dame’s reinforcement of Catholic values in an educational setting is very important to our family. This, along with offering community service opportunities, organizational skills development, and college preparation curriculum all help to empower young women to be the best that they can be.

We are deeply grateful that Notre Dame has been a philanthropic priority for you. What continues to inspire your leadership support of the Academy? Our goal is to support the community and the institutions that have helped our daughters and granddaughters to grow and be successful. Also, our interests lie in supporting organizations that continue to improve the educational quality for its students. While many schools are simply trying to fill classrooms, Notre Dame is looking to the future by building new facilities, adding faculty, and upgrading technology. Much progress has been made over the years and we are proud to be a part of it. Charles and Pat Genuardi are the parents of alumnae Joy Genuardi Mears ’97 and Catherine Genuardi Ciocca ’93. Catherine’s daughters Nina ’19 and Lillian ’20 attend Notre Dame. The Genuardi family’s legacy of support for Notre Dame spans many decades, and we are grateful for their steadfast commitment to the Academy’s mission and our students.

Donor PROFILE The Zozaya Family Notre Dame is blessed to have your daughters as current students. Why did you choose Notre Dame for them? Having four daughters, we chose Notre Dame because we looked for an all girls Catholic secondary education taking a leadership role in studies, athletics and community. Notre Dame fulfilled those requirements because they pave the way for girls to grow in a safe environment with rigorous studies and self discipline. We understood the deep impact of secondary education for a child and how students grow strong roots during these impressionable years. You have generously supported the OUR TIME to INSPIRE Campaign as a Legacy Circle Donor. What motivated your extraordinary support? We shared the same vision and goals Dr. Dwyer and the school proposed, planned and happy to say, expedited. The way Notre Dame took the leadership role in STEM and never wavered amidst the challenges to get it done was commendable.

We see STEM as opening many doors for students’ future careers. It’s happening now and will only get stronger. Why is the addition of the Center for STEM Education an important element in fulfilling Notre Dame’s academic commitment to all students? The STEM Center was a necessary element for the future of the school especially after the completion of their impressive art building. Art combined with STEM is where we see much of the opportunities in the future for men and women. The STEM building can give our girls the advantage early on to discover where their interests lie and open up areas of study they may not have understood were ever available to them. A girl may not know she has potential in science until she sees how science is used in a career that interests her. When we saw Dr. Dwyer and the Board’s passion to make this happen, we were in full support. Alex and Janine Zozaya are parents of Notre Dame junior Joanie, sophomore Cammy, and eighth grader Isabel.
