Mackenzie Gibbons SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
About
For every MUSE Magazine Edition, a special graduating senior is selected to be highlighted individually due to their effort, merit, and devotion to the arts throughout their time at the Academy of Notre Dame.
This season, Mackenzie Gibbons has earned her position through her painting prowess and proficiency throughout the year as an Studio Art student and as a member of the National Art Honors Society.
Hi, I am Mackenzie Gibbons, currently a senior at the Academy of Notre Dame. I have always had a love for art ever since I was little, but never really took any art classes until my junior year of high school and realized it’s now my new favorite passion. I have always been typically known as an athlete, but joining the National Art Honor Society and MUSE has made me realize how important it is to create! These past two years have inspired me to take art in college and continue to do it for the rest of my life.
I would also love to say thanks to Mr. Kulesza and my peers for making the art community an incredible platform for people to express themselves freely.

We all come here for an American dream
To only to be faced with rejection
To be striped of our rights and told to walk in the other direction
We all came here for freedom
But the reality was more gruesome
Realizing we were at the bottom
Realizing we could be detained based on the color of our skin
Fearing a chance we won’t win
Fearing our own president will turn against us
And never own up to his own sins
The people of our country deserve better
We all came here for Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
Only to be presented with prejudice, racism, discrimination
People see racism and think “it’s not my problem”
People see misogyny and think “it’s not my business”
They see ableism and think “it’s not my place to intervene”
But the second it’s the majority, people start to notice.
The people of our country deserve better
The Ocean
I never get peace of mind because of the overflowing sound waves That stream through the ocean
Into my ear until I cant hear
The bittersweet sand burdens my hand, And with all the ruckus
I dump my head into buckets
Drowning out the sound Into silence of tranquility
Reveling my vulnerabilities
