GOALS The goals of the National Dental Association are to: Improve the delivery of oral health care in underserved communities and improve the educational opportunities of minorities underrepresented in the oral health field. The specific objectives of the NDA are to: Establish the NDA as the vanguard of oral health in communities of color. Perpetuate the tradition and upgrade the stature of African American dentists in service to the minority community. Increase the number of minorities in dentistry in areas of private practice, academia, administration, research, health policy, media advocacy and the armed services.

THE EDITORS CORNER Reflection, Gratitude & Legacy Dear NDA Family, It is with great excitement that we present the May/June edition of The Flossline: The Milestones & Momentum Edition. This edition reflects a season of celebration, advocacy, and forward movement within the National Dental Association. Across our organization, we continue to witness meaningful progress — from the accomplishments of our graduating dental students and residents, to the powerful presence of NDA members advocating on Capitol Hill, to the continued leadership and vision guiding us into the future. In this issue, you will find a recap of NDA Day on the Hill, graduation highlights from dental schools and residency programs, and important information regarding the upcoming NDA 2026 Convention. Together, these features capture the spirit of this season: honoring important milestones while building momentum for what lies ahead. AN OPEN LETTER TO NDA MEMBERS PRESIDENT Dr. Wallace J. Bellamy Building on Legacy, Moving Forward Dear NDA Family, My name is Wallace J. Bellamy, and I am honored to serve as the 102nd President of the National Dental Association. My journey to dentistry and leadership is both unique and inspiring. I am a first-generation dentist with an aesthetic and general dental practice in Elk Grove, a suburb of Sacramento, California. Along with my brother Fred, I am the first in both my immediate and extended family to graduate from college—California State University, Sacramento. However, my story begins well before college. A chance appointment with a caring dentist led to an opportunity to shadow him between two-a-day football practices during my sophomore and junior years of high school. By the end of that two-week summer experience, I knew I wanted to become a dentist. I am the son of a career U.S. Air Force sergeant and aircraft mechanic, and I was born in New York City. Because of my father’s service, I lived throughout the United States and Europe. I later graduated from the Boston University School of Dental Medicine and returned to Sacramento to begin my private practice. I did not initially consider myself a leader during college or dental school. However, a mentor and friend recognized leadership potential in me as I was building my practice and encouraged me to become involved in organized dentistry. Since then, I have had the privilege of serving in several leadership roles, including President of the Sacramento Society of the National Dental Association, President of the Sacramento District Dental Society, Vice Regent for the Northern California Region of the International College of Dentists, Chair of the Leadership Development Committee for the California Dental Association, and one of twelve Directors of the California Dental Association.

The theme for this year’s administration is:
ARCHITECTS OF CHANGE Honoring Our Legacy, Rebuilding with Purpose, Leading with Power Building on our foundation, this moment in history demands intentional leadership to dismantle inequities in oral health and rebuild health and social systems—both internal and external—that truly serve our communities. As NDA members, we are not merely responding to change; we are uniquely positioned to design and manifest solutions through advocacy, innovation, and collective action. This theme affirms our power to shape the future of dentistry with purpose, equity, and impact. This theme aligns seamlessly with the NDA’s new Strategic Plan, which is built upon four primary pillars identified by our members as the most impactful: Membership Growth, Engagement, and Value Strengthening and expanding our membership by delivering meaningful value, fostering engagement at every career stage, and ensuring the NDA remains essential to its members. Community Outreach and Engagement Advancing oral health equity by deepening our impact in underserved communities through service, education, and trusted community partnerships. Student and Pathways Support Building strong pathways into dentistry by supporting students and emerging professionals through mentorship, access, leadership development, and career advancement. Beyond dentistry, I am the father of three independent young women, a horseman and cowboy—a term historically rooted in men and women of color—a vintner, an avid reader, and a traveler. NDA 2026 DAY ON THE HILL ADVANCING ORAL HEALTH POLICY
NDA DAY ON THE HILL 2026 Advancing Oral Health Policy On Thursday, May 7, 2026, the National Dental Association gathered in Washington, D.C. for NDA Day on the Hill, an important day of advocacy, education, and policy engagement centered around the theme “Advancing Oral Health Policy.” Hosted at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, this year’s Day on the Hill brought together NDA leadership, policy advocates, oral health professionals, and partners to elevate critical issues affecting the future of dentistry and the communities we serve. The event was hosted by Dr. Wallace Bellamy, 102nd President of the National Dental Association, with Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado serving as cohost, and Dr. Leslie E. Grant, NDA Legislative Committee Chair, helping lead the day’s efforts. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in meaningful discussions focused on the intersection of oral health, access to care, education, insurance reform, workforce sustainability, and public policy. Panel discussions highlighted key areas of concern, including insurance, higher education, and partner policies, with moderators guiding thoughtful conversations on how federal policy can directly impact patients, providers, dental students, residents, faculty, and underserved communities. A central focus of the day was the NDA’s continued commitment to expanding access to oral health care and reducing barriers that prevent vulnerable populations from receiving needed dental services. Policy priorities included support for expanded dental benefits under Medicare and Medicaid, recognition of over-the-counter oral health products as qualified medical expenses, and legislation aimed at easing the financial burden carried by dental students, residents, and faculty. Student debt and workforce development were also significant themes. As the cost of dental education continues to rise, the NDA emphasized the importance of protecting future dentists from restrictive loan policies and supporting legislation that encourages postgraduate training, academic careers, and service in underserved communities. These priorities are especially important as the profession continues working to recruit, retain, and support a diverse dental workforce. Insurance reform was another major area of discussion. NDA leaders and advocates addressed the need to modernize employer sponsored dental insurance, increase transparency, protect patients and providers, and ensure that existing dental benefits reflect the realities of today’s dental care. With many dental plans still operating under outdated annual coverage limits, the conversation emphasized the importance of strengthening benefits in ways that improve access to preventive and restorative care without disrupting the private dental care delivery system.

The day also included important policy conversations surrounding voting rights, artificial intelligence in dentistry, and the broader role of oral health in federal health policy. As technology continues to evolve, the NDA highlighted the need for a responsible federal framework for artificial intelligence in dentistry, one that protects patients, promotes equity, provides legal clarity, and preserves the role of human clinical judgment. NDA Day on the Hill served as a powerful reminder that advocacy is an essential part of advancing oral health equity. Dentistry does not exist in isolation. It is connected to education, economics, health care access, civil rights, technology, and the well being of communities across the country. By bringing these issues to the forefront, the National Dental Association continues to ensure that the voices of dentists, dental students, residents, faculty, and the patients they serve are represented in national policy conversations.

National Dental Association Host the 113th Annual Convention in Richmond, Virginia Richmond, VA — July 16–19, 2026 — The National Dental Association proudly invites dental professionals, students, educators, industry leaders, and community advocates from across the country to attend the 113th NDA Annual Convention, taking place July 16–19, 2026, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond. Centered around connection, innovation, leadership, and oral health equity, the 2026 convention will bring together some of the nation’s most influential voices in dentistry and healthcare for four days of education, networking, celebration, and collaboration. Founded in 1913, the National Dental Association remains the nation’s leading organization for dentists and dental professionals of African descent. The ANDA has been for many years a support group for the spouses of dental professionals for 90 years. Membership is open to all spouses regardless of sex. ANDA also raises scholarship funds and awards yearly scholarship(s) to deserving dental students. This is done at the NDA Convention and through individual donations.

The NDHA Founded in 1932, the National Dental Hygienists’ Association (NDHA) has been committed to the professional development needs of its members. Since its inception, the objective was to address the professional concerns of African American dental hygienists. Through the years, the organization has grown and in 1962 it became an affiliate of the National Dental Association. The goal at the time was to develop a network of communication and camaraderie among its members. The NDHA offers limited financial support to students of color through its scholarships that are awarded annually. Student memberships are also available for a small membership fee.

DR. BRHAN ESKINDER
From Classroom to Pediatric Dentistry Growing up in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Brhan Eskinder believed in the power of education, hard work, and dreaming beyond one’s current circumstances. Those values ultimately led her to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and prepared to continue her training in a Pediatric Dentistry Residency at the University of Michigan. Before entering the dental profession, however, Dr. Eskinder spent five years shaping young minds as a fifth-grade math teacher. Teaching was more than a profession for Dr. Eskinder; it was an opportunity to inspire children while pursuing a dream of her own. She openly shared her goal of becoming a dentist with her students, who became some of her earliest supporters. Some even helped her study for the Dental Admission Test (DAT), quizzing her with flashcards and encouraging her throughout the application process.
“Every year, a few of them would text me and ask, ‘Hey, Ms. E., how’s dental school going?’” Dr. Eskinder recalled. “That always meant the world to me. I loved that they remembered my dreams long after I left their middle school classrooms.” That support reinforced one of the reasons she was drawn to dentistry: the opportunity to educate, encourage, and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. As she prepares for a career in pediatric dentistry, she sees a natural connection between her years in education and her future role caring for children. While dental school brought its share of demanding coursework, board examinations, and long hours, Dr. Eskinder said her greatest challenge was internal. “There are a lot of external challenges in dental school,” she said. “But the biggest challenge I had to overcome was the internal one.” Like many students in competitive academic environments, she sometimes believed she was alone in her struggles. A disappointing exam score or difficult semester could make it seem as though everyone else was succeeding effortlessly while she was falling behind. “You think you’re the only one struggling, therefore you’re not strong,” she explained. “You think you’re the only one who failed that test, therefore you’re not smart.”

Over time, Dr. Eskinder realized that setbacks were not evidence that she did not belong. Instead, they became opportunities to demonstrate resilience, determination, and commitment. “I wasn’t the only one,” she said. “Everyone struggled, and everyone failed at some point. That’s actually a perfectly normal part of learning.” One of her most cherished accomplishments came during her final year of dental school, when she was elected President of the Student National Dental Association for the 2025–2026 term. “This is truly one of my most cherished accomplishments because SNDA is such a special and sacred place for many of us,” Dr. Eskinder said. For Dr. Eskinder, the leadership role represented more than a title. It reflected her commitment to service, mentorship, and creating opportunities for future generations of dental professionals. Throughout her journey, she benefited from family, friends, classmates, faculty members, mentors, and former students who continued to cheer her on from afar. Their encouragement reinforced an important lesson: success is rarely achieved alone. When asked what advice she would offer students beginning dental school, Dr. Eskinder’s response was simple and empowering. “Ain’t nothing to it, but to do it,” she said with a smile. She encourages students to trust themselves, remain consistent, and avoid assuming that others possess a special advantage they lack. “There is nothing other people have that you do not already have inside of you,” Dr. Eskinder said. “You are just as smart. You are just as devoted.” Following graduation, Dr. Eskinder will begin her Pediatric Dentistry Residency at the University of Michigan. Her background as an educator uniquely prepares her for the specialty, where communication, patience, compassion, and trust are essential. As she looks ahead, Dr. Eskinder hopes to make an impact not only through clinical excellence but also through the example she sets for others. “I hope my future as a pediatric dentist is a small reminder for my patients that it’s never too late to flip the script, work hard, and chase a different dream,” she said. From helping fifth graders solve math problems to preparing to care for the next generation of patients, Dr. Brhan Eskinder’s journey is a testament to perseverance, purpose, and the courage to pursue a dream until it becomes reality.

Dr. Jayvon Hibbler Building a Legacy of Service in Memphis For Dr. Jayvon Hibbler, dentistry is where science, artistry, and service intersect. A Memphis native and graduate of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, Dr. Hibbler has always been drawn to work that allows him to use his hands, solve problems, and make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. As he prepares to begin his professional career with a dental service organization (DSO) in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Hibbler reflects on a journey shaped by perseverance, sacrifice, mentorship, and a deep commitment to service. His interest in dentistry began long before dental school. “What inspired me to pursue dentistry was my innate passion for science, art, and just working with my hands,” Dr. Hibbler said. While still in high school, he began exploring careers that would allow him to combine those interests. Dentistry quickly stood out. After connecting with local dentists in Memphis and spending time shadowing them, what began as curiosity developed into a genuine passion for the profession. “I met dentists in Memphis and shadowed them and began to grow a passion for the profession,” Dr. Hibbler said. That passion eventually led him to Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, where he embraced the demands of dental education and learned what it would take to succeed. Like many dental students, Dr. Hibbler quickly discovered that success required adapting to a new level of academic rigor. “A challenge I overcame in dental school was the learning curve initially,” he said. The study habits that had served him previously were no longer enough. To keep pace with the curriculum, Dr. Hibbler had to make difficult adjustments and commit to a new level of discipline. “The way I overcame it was to stop going to bed early and trying to study in the morning,” Dr. Hibbler explained. “I had to sacrifice my nights and weekends and really hone in on the information, and things changed for me dramatically.” That willingness to adapt taught him an important lesson: success in dental school is not simply about intelligence; it is about consistency, sacrifice, and finding a strategy that works. While the long hours and challenging coursework tested his resolve, moments with patients reminded him why he chose dentistry in the first place.

NDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS
One experience, in particular, stands out as the most meaningful moment of his dental school journey. “One memorable moment was when I delivered a set of dentures to a patient and they began to cry due to being edentulous for years,” Dr. Hibbler recalled. Watching a patient regain confidence, function, and dignity through dental care left a lasting impression. “It was a very ‘this is my why’ moment for me,” Dr. Hibbler said. Experiences like that reinforced the impact dentistry can have on a person’s quality of life and strengthened his commitment to serving patients with compassion and excellence. Throughout his journey, Dr. Hibbler benefited from mentors and loved ones who helped guide him through difficult moments. Among those who had the greatest impact was Dr. William Davis at Meharry Medical College. “A mentor who made a difference for me would be Dr. William Davis,” Dr. Hibbler said. “Him taking time to work with me on difficult removable cases and guiding me really allowed me to stand on my own two feet with patients moving forward.” That mentorship gave Dr. Hibbler both technical confidence and professional independence, helping him grow into the clinician he is today. The memory of his brother, who passed away in 2021, was also a powerful source of motivation. “His admirable work ethic gave me strength on days when I felt like I couldn’t,” Dr. Hibbler said. “It made me dig deep and do what needed to be done.” When asked what accomplishment he is most proud of, Dr. Hibbler does not point to awards or accolades. Instead, he reflects on the consistency and determination that carried him across the finish line. “In all honesty, graduating without any remediations and passing boards and licensure the first time,” Dr. Hibbler said. He believes many aspiring dental students underestimate the dedication required to earn a DDS degree. “I think a lot of pre-dental students don’t quite know the rigor, stress, and everything that really goes into obtaining this DDS degree,” he said. “So I’m overly proud of myself for accomplishing and finishing dental school.” As he transitions into professional practice, Dr. Hibbler is excited to return home and serve the city that helped shape him. He looks forward to caring for patients, continuing to develop his clinical skills, and serving as an example for young people considering careers in health care. “I hope to really touch a lot of lives and be a beacon of hope to the next generation of healthcare providers in my community and beyond,” Dr. Hibbler said. For students beginning dental school, his advice centers on maintaining perspective and balance. “Have balance,” Dr. Hibbler said. “Dental school is a lot to take on.” While academic success is important, he encourages students not to lose sight of opportunities to build relationships and expand their professional networks. “Go out responsibly and network, especially,” he advised. “I’ve met a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and professions that will be essential to the life I would like to create for myself.” As graduation marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, Dr. Hibbler recognizes that this achievement extends beyond his own success. “It means the world to me personally,” he said. “But to my family even more, especially being the first doctor.” For Dr. Hibbler, the degree represents years of sacrifice, perseverance, and support from those who believed in him. It is a milestone that reflects not only his accomplishments but also the hopes of a family and community that celebrated every step of the journey. Now, as he begins practicing dentistry in his hometown, Dr. Jayvon Hibbler carries forward a legacy of hard work, resilience, and service—one patient, one smile, and one life at a time.

Dr. Natera Wilson Living Her Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams For Dr. Natera Wilson, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Howard University College of Dentistry represents more than a personal achievement. It is the fulfillment of generations of hope, sacrifice, and perseverance. “I am living my ancestors’ wildest dreams,” she said. Dr. Wilson will begin the next chapter of her journey as a full-time general dentist at Urgent Dental Center & Family Dentistry in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the city she proudly calls home. Returning to serve the community that shaped her life is both a professional milestone and a deeply personal mission. Her path to dentistry began unexpectedly during her junior year of high school. At a career day, a presentation by the daughter of one of her mentors changed the course of her future. “I was so surprised and very confused seeing her,” Dr. Wilson recalled. “She was young, Black, and a dentist.” At the time, Dr. Wilson had never seen a young Black female dentist in real life or even on television. The experience opened her eyes to a possibility she had never imagined for herself. The following year, she secured an externship at Dr. Walker’s dental office on the south side of Fort Wayne, where she worked as his assistant during the school day. “Dr. Walker showed me that I could become a dentist,” she said. “I have been following his lead ever since.” During dental school, Dr. Wilson faced challenges that extended beyond academics and clinical training. She struggled with self-doubt and the pressure to fit into environments where she sometimes questioned whether she truly belonged. “My challenges in dental school centered around the internalization of what others thought about me and me constantly questioning whether I was good enough,” she explained. During her first year, she found herself scrutinizing everything from her background to the way she dressed and spoke. Through reflection and growth, however, she reached a powerful realization: authenticity was not an obstacle to success; it was essential to it. “The lesson I learned is that I cannot please everyone,” Dr. Wilson said. “No matter how educated and successful I become, I will continue to encounter people who question whether I belong in this profession. I never needed to change who I am to help people improve their oral health, and doing that is what is most important to me.”

One of the most meaningful moments of her dental school experience came in 2025, when she received a Crest-Oral B Scholarship through the National Dental Association Foundation. The recognition was especially meaningful because three faculty members took the time to write letters of recommendation on her behalf. “Their belief in me meant so much at a time when I was feeling stretched beyond my limits and seriously questioning whether I could continue,” she said. The scholarship took her from Washington, D.C., to Sacramento, California, for the National Dental Association’s Presidential Inauguration and Scholarship Gala. The candle-lighting ceremony, continuing education sessions, and opportunity to connect with colleagues made the trip a defining memory of dental school. Throughout her education, Dr. Wilson benefited from mentors who believed in her long before she fully believed in herself. Among them, Dr. Salter stands out as especially influential. “Dr. Salter is the most unforgettable educator I have ever had,” she said. “He is the reason so many Bison believe in themselves long before they realize their own potential.” His encouragement, wisdom, and unwavering support helped Dr. Wilson navigate moments of uncertainty and continue growing into the clinician she is today. As she begins her career, she hopes to honor that mentorship through a commitment to excellence, integrity, and service. Her advice to dental students is grounded in personal experience and a mindset of continuous growth. “Do not be afraid to be embarrassed,” Dr. Wilson said. “Staying in your comfort zone too long is a threat to your growth. Make the mistakes, take the losses, and never stop moving forward.” Looking ahead, Dr. Wilson plans to remain actively involved with the National Dental Association and devote her time to service, mentorship, and community outreach. She is especially passionate about speaking with young people and current dental students, sharing her story in hopes of helping others recognize what is possible. “I will impact the field of dentistry by continuing to show up and continuing to share my testimony,” she said. As she returns home to Fort Wayne to begin practicing dentistry, Dr. Natera Wilson represents perseverance, representation, and purpose. A young woman who saw someone who looked like her, dared to imagine a future for herself, and transformed that vision into reality, she now hopes her own story will inspire the next generation to do the same.

Dr. Zachary Byrge Breaking Barriers and Building a Legacy For Dr. Zachary Byrge, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California, San Francisco represents far more than academic achievement. It is the culmination of years of perseverance, sacrifice, and determination—and a milestone that reflects the hopes of a community that rarely sees itself represented in dentistry. A native of Los Angeles who grew up in the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles, Dr. Byrge is proud to become a first-generation dentist. His path to dentistry was anything but traditional. Before dental school, he was a student-athlete who played football at UCLA, developing the discipline and resilience that would later carry him through one of the nation’s most demanding professional programs. “As a young Black man from South Los Angeles, pursuing dentistry was both a challenge and a blessing,” Dr. Byrge said. His journey into the profession was driven by a desire to create opportunities not only for himself, but also for those who would come after him. While pursuing his degree, he often found himself in environments where few people shared his background or experiences. “One of the most memorable moments was overcoming the loneliness and adversity of dental school, knowing I was paving a new path for others like me,” he said. For Dr. Byrge, one of the defining challenges of dental school was navigating the isolation that can come with being one of the few Black students in a professional program. Rather than allowing those feelings to discourage him, he used them as motivation. “I learned to stay focused and resilient, knowing my purpose was bigger than the obstacles,” he explained. Every challenge reinforced his commitment to completing his degree and creating a path that future students from underrepresented backgrounds could follow. Throughout the journey, Dr. Byrge leaned on the support of his family, particularly his sister, Dr. Lenise Yarber, whose example profoundly influenced his career and personal development. “My sister, Dr. Lenise Yarber, was a key supporter who encouraged me and exemplified what it means to serve and care for others,” Dr. Byrge said. As a respected leader within the National Dental Association and a dedicated health care professional, Dr. Yarber provided both inspiration and guidance. Her commitment to service helped shape Dr. Byrge’s vision for the kind of dentist he hopes to become.

That support sustained him through difficult moments and contributed to what he considers his proudest accomplishment. “My proudest accomplishment is earning my dental degree and becoming a first-generation dentist,” Dr. Byrge said. For him, the achievement extends beyond personal success. It represents breaking barriers, challenging expectations, and demonstrating what is possible for young people who may not see themselves represented in health care professions. “It’s about inspiring future generations,” Dr. Byrge said. Following graduation, Dr. Byrge will continue his clinical training through a General Practice Residency, where he plans to further develop his skills while expanding his ability to serve diverse patient populations. His long-term vision extends well beyond clinical practice. Dr. Byrge hopes to mentor young people, particularly those from underserved communities who may not realize the opportunities available to them. “I hope to make a positive impact by mentoring at-risk youth and encouraging them to pursue their dreams,” Dr. Byrge said. “I want to serve my community and show that success is possible regardless of where you come from.” That commitment is rooted in his own experiences. He understands the power of seeing someone who looks like you succeed and believes representation can transform lives. When asked what advice he would offer students just beginning dental school, Dr. Byrge emphasizes resilience, community, and self-belief. “Stay resilient and keep your purpose in mind,” he said. “Dental school can be challenging, especially as a first-generation student or if you’re feeling like you don’t see many people who look like you. Remember why you started and stay focused on your goals.” He also encourages students to seek out mentors, build strong support systems, embrace their unique backgrounds, and prioritize their mental and physical well-being. “Your background, experiences, and perspective are valuable assets,” he said. “Use them to connect with patients, mentor others, and bring diversity to the profession.” As he reflects on graduation, the significance of the moment is impossible to overstate. “This graduation milestone means everything to me personally,” Dr. Byrge said. “Growing up in Watts and being one of the only Black students in my program, I often felt alone. But I pushed through those challenges with the hope of making a difference—not just for myself, but for my family and community.” For Dr. Byrge, graduation is not the finish line; it is the beginning of a new chapter. From the streets of Watts to the halls of one of the nation’s premier dental schools, his story is one of resilience, representation, and purpose. As he begins his residency and prepares for a career in dentistry, he carries with him a mission that extends far beyond oral health: to inspire others, uplift his community, and prove that no dream is beyond reach.

Dr. Jameela Broadie Precision, Purpose, and a Path to Oral Surgery For Dr. Jameela Broadie, dentistry has always been rooted in precision, curiosity, and a desire to improve the lives of others. A Montgomery, Alabama, native and graduate of the UAB School of Dentistry, Dr. Broadie is preparing to take the next step toward a long-held goal: training as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Her interest in dentistry began in an unexpected place: a ninth-grade biology class. During a pig dissection, she was captivated by the precision of the work and the opportunity to use her hands to better understand the human body. “My passion for dentistry all started with my biology pig dissection in ninth grade,” Dr. Broadie said. “I fell in love with the scalpel and the precision that came with uncovering each organ to study.” That early interest grew alongside her passion for health and nutrition. As a high school athlete, Dr. Broadie became increasingly aware of how personal health affects performance and overall well-being. Dentistry offered the ideal intersection of hands-on care, clinical skill, and the belief that oral health is essential to total health. “Dentistry felt like the perfect profession that would allow me to blend my passion for nutrition, love of precision, and desire to build a career rooted in hands-on care,” she said. “I loved the concept of your overall health starting in your mouth and the hand skills necessary for a career in dentistry. I’ve been hooked ever since.” During dental school, Dr. Broadie embraced opportunities that expanded her perspective beyond the operatory. One of the most meaningful moments of her journey came when she was invited to present her research on total nasal reconstruction at the annual IADR research conference in San Diego, California. Although she had co-authored several research projects during dental school, this was her first time presenting at a national conference. The experience helped her recognize the value of research as another way to improve patient care and contribute to the profession. “Though I was not the biggest fan of research in undergrad, I have grown to love it during my time in dental school,” Dr. Broadie said. “It provided me with an alternate outlook on patient care and a meaningful way to give back to the field outside of the operatory.” Support from mentors also played an important role in her success. Dr. Emerson Martins, her clinical bay leader, became a trusted source of guidance throughout her time in clinic. He created

an environment where she felt comfortable asking questions, working through uncertainty, and growing in confidence. “He stayed late with me countless times to finish up my clinical requirements and wrote me numerous recommendation letters for various scholarships and applications,” Dr. Broadie said. “He believed in me and saw my full potential, even when at times I couldn’t see it for myself.” That encouragement carried special weight as Dr. Broadie pursued the accomplishment she is most proud of: matching into the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at her firstchoice institution, LSU Health Sciences Center. She will enter its six-year integrated DMD/MD program following graduation. For Dr. Broadie, the match was the result of years of determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to a dream she has held since she was 16 years old. At times, she struggled with imposter syndrome and faced setbacks that tested her confidence. Still, she kept showing up and putting in the work. “Every uncomfortable moment, every time I felt isolated, and every time I showed up even when it was hard, prepared me for what was to come,” she said. “Those difficult moments taught me how badly I wanted this and how hard I was willing to push myself.” As she begins residency, Dr. Broadie hopes to build a career centered on service, especially for underserved and underrepresented communities. She is interested in opportunities to serve primarily Spanish-speaking patients, patients with special needs who require sedation for treatment, and communities in need of dental care through mission work. She is also open to pursuing a head and neck fellowship following her oral surgery training, with the goal of caring for patients with head and neck cancer and cleft lip and palate who may otherwise lack access to treatment. Her advice for dental students is to be intentional about seeking growth, even when it feels uncomfortable. “Create and take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow that you can,” Dr. Broadie said. “Ask questions, show up, be teachable and open, and put yourself in rooms where you can grow and learn.” From an early fascination with the precision of a scalpel to a future in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Jameela Broadie’s journey reflects discipline, perseverance, and purpose. As she begins the next chapter of her training, she carries forward a commitment not only to clinical excellence, but also to expanding access to care and making a lasting impact on the communities she serves.

Dr. Urby Tucker A Calling to Compassionate Care For Dr. Urbi Tucker, a five-week operating room rotation during a General Practice Residency at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx became the beginning of a new calling. While treating special needs and medically complex patients under general anesthesia, Dr. Tucker found a deep interest in the clinical decisions taking place beyond the dental chair. Questions about anesthetic depth, patient management, and the reasoning behind each case soon grew into a genuine passion for Dental Anesthesiology. The opportunity to provide safe, comfortable care for patients who might otherwise be unable to receive the treatment they need made the specialty feel especially meaningful. What began as curiosity quickly became a commitment to helping patients and families navigate some of their most vulnerable moments with confidence and compassion.

Dr. Urby Tucker A Calling to Compassionate Care For Dr. Tucker, every patient interaction reinforces that purpose. Patients often arrive for surgery anxious, uncertain, or overwhelmed, whether it is their first procedure or one of many. Being able to offer reassurance and contribute to a safe, positive experience is a responsibility Dr. Tucker does not take for granted. That patient-centered focus will remain central as Dr. Tucker begins a Dental Anesthesiology Residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. The next phase of training will offer the opportunity to continue developing clinical skills, deepen an understanding of anesthesia, and provide compassionate care to a diverse patient population. Throughout the residency journey, Dr. Tucker has been supported by a strong network of mentors who invested their time, wisdom, and encouragement in both professional and personal growth. Dr. Willie Winfree, Dr. Crystal McIntosh-Clarke, Dr. Stephen Harden, Dr. Erica Simms, Dr. Jim Ervil, Dr. Nadine Newsome, Dr. Isabel Garcia, and Dr. Adela Aguirre-Alarcon are among those whose guidance has helped shape the clinician Dr. Tucker is becoming. Their support affirmed the value of remaining curious, seeking guidance, and continuing to learn well beyond the minimum requirements of a training program. That lesson now informs Dr. Tucker’s advice to future residents and dentists considering advanced training: immerse yourself in the specialty that interests you, ask questions, find mentors, and look for every opportunity to grow. Most importantly, Dr. Tucker encourages future clinicians to remain steadfast advocates for their patients. A commitment to patient care, a willingness to learn, and the ability to think critically can leave a lasting impression on both patients and future program directors. As this next chapter begins, Dr. Tucker hopes to remain grounded, consistent, and eager to learn from every patient. Dental Anesthesiology offers the opportunity to care for children, adults, older adults, and medically complex patients — a breadth of service that aligns closely with Dr. Tucker’s desire to expand access to care and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. With compassion, humility, and a growing command of the specialty, Dr. Urbi Tucker is preparing to enter the next stage of training with a clear sense of purpose: to help patients receive the safe, supportive care they deserve while continuing to grow as a clinician and advocate.

Opportunities to Lead: COMMITTEES OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES The House of Delegates is seeking dedicated members to lead or serve on the following committees, which play critical roles in shaping the future of the National Dental Association: COMMITTEE ON CREDENTIALS
Responsible for recording attendance and activities during House meetings. This committee also conducts hearings on conflicts regarding delegate certifications.
COMMITTEE ON DENTAL Acts as an investigative body for dental education at all levels—predental, EDUCATION, RESEARCH, undergraduate, and postgraduate. This committee informs members about & PROFESSIONAL opportunities for internships, residencies, and specialty organizations. ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE ON INSURANCE
Focuses on developing and recommending policies and programs to improve public dental health. This committee also assists component societies and agencies in enhancing community oral health programs. Considers and addresses insurance-related issues for the protection of association members. This committee also advises the Board of Trustees on plans aligned with policies adopted by the House of Delegates.
COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Facilitates cooperation with dentists and dental organizations domestically and abroad to exchange dental knowledge and information in alignment with House policies.
COMMITTEE ON SCHOLARSHIP AID
Investigates and evaluates applicants for loans from the association’s special fund, designed to support deserving students at the nation’s dental colleges.
COMMITTEE ON ETHICS
Ensures that the organization adheres to the highest ethical standards in all its activities and decision-making processes.
COMMITTEE FOR ADVOCACY, JUSTICE, EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION (JEDI)
Builds strategic collaborations to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in dental education, leadership, research, and patient care. This committee strives to close disparities affecting Black, Latinx, and American Indian communities.
By joining one of these committees, members have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the NDA’s mission while helping to shape policies, programs, and initiatives that impact dentistry nationwide. We encourage all interested members to step forward and participate in this vital work.
