Message from the Chairman of the NDA Board of Trustees

For over a century, the NDA has stood as a beacon of change and a driving force in the fight for oral health equity. Our vision remains bold and unwavering: to eliminate disparities in oral healthcare and build a future where every community, regardless of race or background, has access to quality dental care and practitioners who reflect the vast diversity of our country. Through the power of the collective voices of our members, NDA has championed the rights of underrepresented populations, mentored hundreds of current and future dental professionals, and elevated the practice of dentistry as a cornerstone of public health in marginalized communities.
However, this is just the beginning. Our greatest impact is still ahead of us. As Chair of the Board of Trustees for my beloved Association, it is my honor and pleasure to extend a heartfelt thank you for joining us for the installation of Dr. Cheryle Baptiste as the 101st President of the NDA and our other slate of officers for 2025.
The Presidential Inaugural Gala is more than just an evening of celebration. It is a powerful opportunity to come together in support of our shared commitment to oral health equity and justice. By donating, you are not only supporting the Inaugural Gala. You are also enabling us to expand our impact and increase access to education, advocacy, and care for those most in need.
We are building on a legacy of excellence driven by a deep sense of responsibility to ensure oral health is recognized as a right, not a privilege. Proceeds from the Inaugural Gala will support scholarships for dental students and funding for our national and community programs, both vital for us to execute our mission. Together, we can make this an unforgettable evening of purpose, progress, and partnership.
Thank you for your continued support and investment in the mission of the National Dental Association. I look forward to celebrating with you and forging new paths toward a healthier, more equitable future for all.
Onward and Upward,

Reginald Salter, DDS, MBA, PhD, FICD Chairman, Board of Trustees National Dental Association

Message from the 101st President of the NDA

Dear Esteemed National Dental Association Family and Supporters,
I am both honored and excited to address you as the president-elect of the National Dental Association (NDA) during this pivotal moment in our history. Our theme, "Dentistry United: Empowering Communities, Inspiring Leaders," captures the spirit of our mission and the vision we share for the future of dentistry.
As we embark on this journey together, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and partnership. Your commitment has been instrumental in shaping the NDA into the “Voice of the Underserved,” and I pledge to continue building on our legacy of leadership and service. Transparency and integrity will remain the cornerstones of our administration, guiding us as we strive for excellence.
Empowering Communities is at the forefront of our mission. We are dedicated to promoting oral health equity for people of color, the underserved and our military veterans. Through initiatives like NDA-HEALTH NOW®, we aim to tackle systemic barriers to care and improve health outcomes in our communities. Your continued support is vital to these efforts.
Equally important is our commitment to Inspiring Leaders. The NDA has a proud tradition of mentoring dental students and nurturing future leaders. By providing opportunities for professional development, we can empower young dentists to lead with confidence, ensuring a vibrant future for our profession. Our advocacy efforts will address policy barriers and promote equitable access to dental care, making a meaningful impact on the oral health landscape.
As we reflect on our global mission, we recognize the significance of international dental mission trips. Our dedication to these initiatives showcases our solidarity with global oral health efforts and our commitment to making a difference beyond our borders.
Looking ahead to 2025, our focus will center on three pivotal areas: Financial Stability and Viability, Membership Growth, and Technology. These areas are essential for the sustainable success of the NDA, and your support will be crucial in realizing our goals.
As I reminisce about my journey within the NDA, I recall family vacations spent at our annual NDA conventions— moments that ignited my passion for dentistry and community service. As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society in 2025, I am inspired by the words and actions of my mother, the late Ruth Baptiste, my father, the late Roy L. Baptiste, DDS, and my mentors and I recall the importance of supporting our mission and the legacy that we continue to build.
I am excited to embark on this journey with you as we prepare for our 112th NDA Annual Convention in Kansas City, MO, from July 9-13, 2025. Together, we can empower our communities, inspire future leaders, and make a lasting impact on the oral health landscape.
Thank you for your support and commitment to the NDA.
Warm regards,

Cheryle Baptiste, DDS, FICD, Diplomate IAMDI 101st President, National Dental Association

In the beginning…
“Long before the seeds were planted for the National Dental Association, there were men in America, the ancestors of slaves, who aspired to be the ones who could and would heal those in need. These men dared to be educated, sometimes in the cover of darkness. Some received the support of whites who believed that slavery was despicable and illiteracy was a shackle. They shared the belief that education was the key to freedom and progress.
On November 14, 1900, 12 graduates of Howard University College of Dentistry met in Washington, DC and founded what was then called the Washington Society of Colored Dentists. The 11 men and one woman determined that there was a need for an organized effort in dentistry to address the needs of colored professionals. They planted the seeds for what would later become the National Dental Association. They were denied membership in the existing dental organizations because of their skin color. Despite the barriers of racial discrimination, they were determined to continue their pursuit of excellence and to gain the confidence of the public, which was not accustomed to seeing colored dentists.” (Excerpted from the NDA Centennial Compendium 19132013)
History and Mission
The National Dental Association (NDA) had its earliest beginnings in 1900, when 12 practitioners felt they needed a professional organization. In November of that year, a small group met and formed the Washington Society of colored Dentists in the District of Columbia. The name was changed in 1907 to the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society, in honor of the first Black dental college graduate. Although the seeds were sown in 1900 for a professional organization, it was Dr. D. A. Ferguson of Richmond, Virginia, who began propagating the urgency of a national organization for Black dentists. After convincing many other professional colleagues of this need, the National Association of Colored Dentists was formed on May 1, 1901, at Howard University College of Dentistry. This new organization met annually for five years, but eventually failed to sustain enough interest to continue meeting.
In 1913, under the leadership of Dr. Ferguson, a nucleus group of 29 progressive men from Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia came together to form a new organization, the Tri-State Dental Association. By 1918, the Association included memberships from 14 states.
This growth reflected and warranted a wider program, one national in scope. The TriState Dental Association was reorganized in 1918 into the Interstate Dental Association and, by 1923, 21 states were represented at its annual meeting. From 1923 to 1931, the influence of the Interstate Dental Association reached local communities and dental groups with the concept of a “national idea”. The Commonwealth Dental Society of New Jersey organized in 1927 and became affiliated with the Interstate Dental Association in 1928. In July 1932, Commonwealth sent a delegation to Interstate’s annual meeting held at Howard University College of Dentistry. The purpose of this meeting was to invite the Interstate Dental Association to Commonwealth’s annual meeting in Bordentown, New Jersey, specifically to form a national organization. This invitation was accepted and in 1932, the Interstate Dental Association became the National Dental Association.
In assuming the responsibilities of the national organization, the Association embarked upon an intensive program to increase membership and perfect its organizational structure. A new constitution defined the relationship of the constituent societies to the national organization. In addition, scientific sessions, standing and special committees, and an official journal were developed.
For over 100 years, the NDA has been a national forum for minority dentists and a leader in advancing their rights within the dental profession, the armed services, the government, and the private sector. Through scholarships and support programs, the NDA promotes dentistry as a viable profession.

OUR HISTORY

The Robert T. Freeman Dental Society is a local component of the National Dental Association. The organization was conceived during the turn of the twentieth century when blacks were not admitted to local white dental associations. On November 14, 1900, the Washington Society of Colored Dentists was formed. Toward the end of the first decade of its existence, the name was changed to honor the first black American to receive a doctorate degree in dentistry.
Dr. Robert T. Freeman was a native Washingtonian who became interested in dentistry very early in life. Dr. Nobel, a local white practitioner, hired him as an office boy and was soon impressed with the proficiency and knowledge that Robert gained merely by watching. Since Freeman showed so much promise, Dr. Noble tutored him privately in the “art and science of the practice of dentistry.” His interests stimulated to the point of passion, Freeman decided to enter dental school and receive formal training. The Civil War and Slavery were too recent in the minds of many for young Freeman to be accepted by any of the existing dental schools. However, when Harvard University added its department of dentistry in 1867, this pioneer applied and, perhaps to his surprise but to the fulfillment of his ambition, he was accepted. He entered in 1868 as one of a class of 16 and on March 10, 1869, became the first American Negro to receive the doctorate degree in dentistry. Returning to Washington, he practiced in the building with Dr. Noble. Unfortunately, less than ten years passed before Dr. Robert T. Freeman entered the realm of eternal peace and his career on earth ended.
The objectives of theRobert T. Freeman Dental Society were and still remain to create fellowship, to cultivate the highest degree of excellence in the science and art of dentistry, and to provide programs of continuing education for its membership and the community it serves.
For almost fifty years, the Society fought valiantly to appoint a black dentist to the Board of Dental Examiners of the District of Columbia. This battle was won in 1950.
Many of the men who formed the pillars of this Society also participated in the development of Howard University’s dental curriculum. As a result of their work, many of our members have gained national prestige and recognition in the field of dentistry.
