F

or those of you who follow Chinese astrology, 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon. According to this same celestial system, I’m a Fire Dragon, which means that I am often either burning hot with ideas and strategies for taking over small villages, or I have retreated to my cave to sleep on my hoard of collectibles and lick whatever wounds I’ve incurred while attempting to live my best dragon life.

One of the things I collect in my treasure trove are excuses, which are bloody fantastic when applied properly, and which fit perfectly into 2024 if it were the year of the ‘Would’ Dragon instead of the Wood Dragon. “I would do [this particular thing], however [said thing]

does not align with my energy/values/ worldview/timetable at this particular moment. Therefore, I will not.”

All of this is to say that in a world (and a region) absolutely brimming with possibilities, I feel it is essential to harness this year’s Would Dragon energy to help determine which possibilities are in the best alignment with our values.

In my role as director of NCW Arts, it is so tempting to say, “Yes, more of that please, and right now if you don’t mind!” to absolutely everything. I find myself in this mindset nearly every day simply because we have set such a high bar as an entity that supports all things in our collective creative landscape.

As we roll into year three of our existence as an organization, it is clear that establishing our priorities will play a big factor in our long-term success. To fulfill our mission of nurturing the Arts, our crack team of dragon handlers (AKA board of directors) at NCW Arts needs what every small nonprofit needs: stable and diverse revenue streams, engaged leadership, a clear and manageable strategic plan and generous donors.

Thankfully, these cornerstones are in place, and in 2024, NCW Arts will build judiciously upon them. We are excited this year to channel our collective “Would Dragon” energy in all its forms to support and provide resources to our regional Arts scene.

Five of the original band members ended up dying. It was horrible.

I was a lost soul for many years. I left the band in 2009 after reconnecting with my high school sweetheart, Brenda.

When she came back into my life, the first thing she did was walk away because I was a mess. That was the most important turning point in my life, when I was about to see her taillights for the second time.

So, I went to work on myself and changed my life. Now it’s like the old story goes — we’ve been married since 2009 and the last couple weeks haven’t been that bad! [laughs]. She fought for me by being honest and nobody had ever done that before.

Through overcoming addiction, the loss of several close bandmates and a life-changing epiphany sparked by reconnecting with the love of his life, Curtis Moore has something to say. Armed with an acoustic guitar and microphone, Moore fleshes out an authentic musical autobiography, through song and intimate personal tales.

Can you share some musical influences that have shaped your style?

Jimmy Buffett was a huge motivational person in my life. I ran away from Leavenworth in 1983 and went to Key West, Fla. In my mind I thought I’d play in his band [laughs]. So, yeah, Jimmy Buffett, John Prine, Rolling Stones. Also Cowpunk and Americana genres run deep.

What musical project holds special meaning for you? Any major turning points?

I led a band called Pacific Disturbance.

Everything I learned about being a frontman was in that band. We’d deliver these high-flyin’ shows with a lot of emotion, totally off the rails. I was an addict at that time, but somehow I managed to keep [the band] together. I had a reputation for being reckless, and everyone wanted to see just how reckless I could get. They wanted to be there when I dropped dead on stage. It was so embarrassing when I heard that. I felt like a monkey on a chain.

What’s happening musically for you now?

I have a great thing going. I play solo shows all around the state and keep a tight schedule. Recently I formed a band called Curtis Moore and the Stone Blind Horses. Also, I have two acoustic solo albums coming out soon. One is an EP with six originals and the other, I cover 11 songs by my heroes. I recorded both at Avast Studios in Seattle.

What is your advice for aspiring musicians?

Stick to what you know. Be true to that and make no excuses. Whatever you love, love it as much as you can, and let your audience know how much you love it. It’s up to them to accept it or not.

bout a dozen art students at Wenatchee Valley College will show works across a range of media and themes in an exhibition through February at Art Alley in Wenatchee’s Pybus Public Market.

Artworks by the students represent a glimpse into the types of courses being taught at WVC’s Music and Art Center (MAC). Drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, illustration, digital and graphic design and art history are offered through the academic year.

The artists “are all growing and learning disciplines and skills that can help them to make compelling artistic expressions of their ideas and perspectives,” said Scott Bailey, WVC art program director.

And the courses draw a dynamic mix of students. It’s not uncommon at WVC to find 18-year-old Running Start students working alongside senior citizens from Continuing Education classes, said Bailey, “all growing in their own ways and benefitting from one another’s perspectives and influences.”

pursue degrees and professions other than art, said Bailey. In Painting 1 class, they’ve learned about color mixing and painting techniques.

Artist and writer Aislyn Ross, who has taken several art classes as a Running Start student. She will graduate from both high school and WVC in the spring and then study art at a university next year.

Joanna Lavaun may take nearly every art class offered at WVC, said Bailey. She hopes to “soak up as much experience as possible and develop an impressive portfolio” before going on to an art program elsewhere, he added.

Carly Feddersen and Sue Edick are accomplished artists who have returned to the classroom to continue their growth and professional development as non-traditional students. They’ve taken classes in printmaking, illustration and advanced painting.

YOUNG MUSICIAN COMPETITION COMMEMORATES BELOVED VIOLINIST

M

usic teachers and their proteges often develop special bonds, lifelong and beyond, and the annual Angela Schuster Svendsen Young Musicians Competition celebrates those relationships. The Wenatchee Valley Symphony and Orchestra created the event to commemorate the life of an especially beloved local violinist and teacher who died in 2007. The competition lives on, and its generous scholarships have since been augmented by the Woods Family Foundation through the Community Foundation of North Central Washington.

Organizers again encourage 10-12th grade musicians to apply and audition – the competition is open to students from Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties, both vocalists and instrumentalists taking private or school music lessons.

(Students in grades 7-9 may compete, but for adjudication and experience only.) Last year’s winning musicians were all from

Wenatchee: Savannah Webb and Violet Madsen, both sopranos, and cellist Emily Von Reis The first-place winner of the 2024 competition will receive a $3,000 college scholarship, a commemorative plaque and the opportunity to perform their piece with orchestral accompaniment at the April 20, 2024, Symphony concert. The secondplace winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship and a plaque, and the third-place winner will receive a $500 scholarship and a plaque.

Musicians who knew and respected Angela Schuster Svendsen agreed she was a consummate teacher, ultimately building a studio of 44 students, ages four through 60. One admirer said, “Angela loved her students and drew limitless pride at watching them grow into accomplished musicians and people. She cherished the opportunity to share her passion for music with them and others.”

Schuster Svendsen started taking violin lessons at the age of three and continued her studies with Carol McManus of Cashmere. As a high school student, she served as concertmistress for the Wenatchee High School Orchestra while also playing with the Wenatchee Valley Symphony. At Central Washington University she was the orchestra’s concertmistress and first began teaching students in the university’s studio.

Two weeks after graduating with her B.A. in musical performance, she married fellow musician Eric Svendsen. She went on to become a valued member of the Portland area symphonic community, playing with the Portland Ballet Orchestra, Portland Opera Orchestra, Oregon Ballet Theater and the Vancouver Symphony.

At the time of her death at age 31, Schuster Svendsen had also earned a tenured position as second violinist in the Eugene Symphony. Sadly, she and a col-

league both died in a late-night car accident as a trio of musicians drove home to Portland, as they often did, from their symphony performance in Eugene.

Lydia Tang Swada, a former student, said of her passing, “Angela is the reason why I chose to pursue music, why I studied with her professors at her alma mater, why I am a road-warrior freelance musician.

Angela was the truest role model to her students as an active performing artist.”

The annual Wenatchee Valley Symphony competition and scholarship in her name continues to stand as a tribute to her, and to all music teachers and their students.

FEATURED EVENT: HOT AND COOL JAZZ IN LEAVENWORTH An internationally-known combo, award-winning wines, creative bites, a cozy setting in what might be a chilly February and luxurious items to bid on – there’s a lot to love at Winter Jazz at Silvara Cellars this month.

The Leavenworth Jazz Association’s evening event is a double fund raiser: ticket sales will help support the nonprofit’s second annual Jazz Festival in

the spring, and the related raffle will playing both jazz classics and original raise money to enhance the Cascade tunes from Hall’s albums Seen on the High School music program.

QUINCY ARTS GROUP NURTURES LOCAL THEATER TALENT

Two past shows produced by Quincy Valley Allied Arts were Sister Act and The Little Mermaid. They featured local talent, volunteer actors and crew from all over the Columbia Basin.

A

s NCW Arts develops from organizational infancy into fully formed adulthood, we are eager to learn from our sibling organizations that have served central Washington for decades before we were even a twinkle in the universe’s eye.

Methow Arts, Columbia Basin Allied Arts and Quincy Valley Allied Arts (QVAA) have all helped establish thriving arts communities in our region, and it was my pleasure to learn a bit more about QVAA specifically through recent conversations with Marie Jamison and Brian Higgins.

Jamison is the current vice-president of the QVAA board of directors and has served on the board since 2015. Higgins is the director of their current musical Bright Star, written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Incidentally, Higgins’ dad, Bill, was a founding member of QVAA in 1999 and directed their very first production (Oklahoma!) that same year.

Higgins-the-younger also directed Sister Act a couple of years back, and that was when he noticed a significant sea change in the direction of QVAA’s proverbial ship. It was around that time that the organization seemed to steer away from the shoals of Rodgers and Hammerstein and started to explore other waters.

Both Higgins and Jamison feel that QVAA is in the middle of an exciting re-

naissance instigated by a young board of directors with a penchant for taking risks.

They’re producing works not typically seen in the area, while still showcasing local talent from Quincy, Ephrata, Soap Lake and Moses Lake.

“Locals are the foundation of the show the whole time,” says Higgins, and the vibe at QVAA seems to be one of saying yes to new ideas and creating space for people to step up, learn and become proficient at new skills.

Case in point: while Riley Youngren has been the musical director for several productions over the past few years, he is currently mentoring an Ephrata High School student who, throughout the rehearsal period for Bright Star, will have transitioned fully into the role of musical director, while Youngren takes to the stage.

“The QVAA board is not afraid to take chances and let people do things,” says Higgins. Jamison echoes that and states, “We want to be a training ground for people who want to learn about the process [of creating theatre].”

QVAA also values collaboration with other arts organizations. They partner closely with the Quincy School District to use their new state of the art Performing Arts Center at the high school for their four performances each year (a children’s show, a musical, a Christmas concert and a summer outdoor show).

They have a well-established mutual support system with the Masquers Theater in Soap Lake, according to Jamison. “We

also recently worked with Stage Kids in Wenatchee to borrow costumes, props and set pieces for our Finding Nemo Jr. production last year,” she said.

SO, WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?

ell, it appears everybody’s laughing.

Alex Haley says that audiences for the comedy presenters he books yearround for the Numerica Performing Arts Center are not a predictable demographic.

Since the PAC stage was transformed into

an intimate “black box” theater space for comedy shows, he’s noticed the young and hip mingle with the more seasoned, and perceived liberals and conservatives guffaw with similar gusto.

DEREK SHEFFIELD: The Leavenworth writer, poet, teacher and naturalist has, along with his co-editors, won a prestigious commendation from The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association for Cascadia Field Guide: Art, Ecology, Poetry.

Theirs was one of six books chosen by the Awards Committee from a field of three hundred published last year in the five-state region. PNBA is an association of independent bookstores that since 1965 has honored luminary figures in Northwest literature, often before they received national attention.

The book was praised by PNBA judges as “a collective love song to the wonder, nature and history of the land in which we live. The editorial team captured the magic of a region that is so much more than this simple title might allude.” ​

MATTHEW PIPPIN: In December he received the 2023 Stanley Lifetime Achievement Award in the professional category, an honor given annually in memory of Wenatchee civic leader and arts advocate Bob Stanley.

Pippin, who works at the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center, has performed dozens of memorable roles in local theaters, once doing thirty shows in one six-year stretch, and he continues to challenge himself as a performer and a director.

Additionally, as a one-man charitable organization — known as” The March of the Pippin” in recent years — he has logged hundreds of miles walking the streets of his hometown to raise money for the Numerica Performing Arts Center. And, after reviving a 17-year-dormant book manuscript, in October he published his first novel, Nine Strangers.

stand-up comedy is not only alive and well but growing in popularity. And that’s not in spite of online streaming services offering hundreds of choices; he thinks it’s because of that.

“Whether it’s from talk shows and Comedy Central, a streaming service or YouTube, new comics can reach a fan base, thousands of people watching and listening who know what they’re about,” Haley said. “Those same people want to see them when they’re booked into a venue.”

In 2018, when Haley first started the series called Cold Winter Nights, his plan was to help fill the PAC January to March with something edgy, a bookend to the risqué Hot August Nights productions. The big auditorium space, perfect for main stage productions, seemed a little hollow for the kind of up-close humor they offered.

So, the performance venue was turned on its axis and audiences sat at small tables and risers on the stage. Recently re-branded from Cold Winter Nights, the more flexible Black Box Comedy series now brings stand-up comedians to Wenatchee year-round.

Speaking about the compact seating arrangement, “It’s a much more intimate experience, with a different energy,” Haley said. “All our tables are reserved for sponsors – it’s one of our perks —and those fill up immediately. General seating usually sells out, too.”

In a full-length comedy show, subjects like sex, death, religion, politics and growing up ______ (fill in the blank: gay, introverted, in Alaska, with 40 cats, poor,

Arabic, tiny, famous, with a single dad...) tend to be personal and situational. Whatever its themes, comedy’s success is measurable: people either laugh or they don’t.

In the biz, some comics are known as “clean” and family-friendly; some are “blue” and more titillating. The approach differs, but Haley agrees that the role of comedy has always been to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.”

Wenatchee audiences seem highly receptive to the various afflictions of the Black Box comedy shows, and there’s another one coming up soon. And it’s a doozy: Brian Regan, a 30-year veteran who Entertainment Weekly calls “Your favorite comedian’s favorite comedian.”

Regan has been making people laugh for 30 years. He also made history in 2015 as Comedy Central’s first live broadcast of a stand-up special. He’s been a frequent guest artist on the David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon shows and plays venues like Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall, Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. He’s also featured on the TV series Loudermilk and, with Jerry Seinfeld, has co-produced his own Netflix series.

“The really cool thing,” said Haley, “is that his people called us. He’d played Town Toyota Center a while ago, and they’d heard about the PAC and were excited about the prospect of a smaller, edgier kind of venue.”

FEATURED OPPORTUNITY:

LEAVENWORTH’S TWO-SHOW AUDITIONS It happens every winter so that it can happen every summer: local children from around the region vie for singing, dancing and acting roles in Leavenworth Summer Theater’s acclaimed musical productions.

LST will hold one full day of auditions for boys and girls, ages 7-12, for two upcoming shows. They’ll be casting the role of Chip in Beauty and the Beast as well as the several Von Trapp children in their perennial big stage heart-warmer, The Sound of Music.

Auditions by appointment for adult performers in both casts will take place over the course of three days the following week. (In addition, older children ages 1317 may audition as adults for roles in the B&B ensemble or as Leisl Von Trapp).

The children’s auditions are from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Feb. 17, at 303 Pine Street, Leavenworth. For more information starting Feb. 1 go to leavenworthsummertheater.org/auditions.
