Explosive devices sent to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton On Wednesday, packages containing explosive devices were sent to a number of prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. CNN also received a bomb addressed to Obama’s C.I.A. director John Brennan in a manila envelope. No one was harmed by any of the devices, but the bomb sent to CNN caused a mass evacuation of the Time Warner Center in Manhattan, where the office is located. It has been confirmed by a law enforcement official that the bombs were similar to a device found in the home of billionaire philanthropist and liberal donor George Soros.

Winning Mega Millions lottery ticket purchased in South Carolina According to lottery officials, someone has won the $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot in South Carolina. The jackpot is the world’s second largest lottery grand prize ever with winning numbers 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and a Mega Ball number of 5. However, it’s possible the winner may never be publically announced, as South Carolina is one of the eight states that allows winners to remain anonymous. The one-time cash option for the jackpot is $913 million.

Fake election signs throughout Raleigh amid Midterm Elections As the early voting period for Midterm Elections continues, Raleigh residents have spotted fake campaign signs in the community. Signs on Six Forks Road have been spotted with slogans such as “These signs are dumb” and “Elect Butts, what have you got to lose?” The signs do not include a website or phone number and there is no candidate with the last name Butts listed as a candidate in any election this year. The Wake County Board of Elections said the signs are protected by the First Amendment and are not regulated.

In the coming weeks, Capital Boulevard will be closed during the early morning hours while construction takes place on the old Wade Avenue bridge. Workers will be tearing down the bridge as part of the reconstruction on traffic patterns. The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be working on the bridge on the northbound side until next Thursday and then move on to the southbound lanes. These lanes will be closed from 12-5 a.m. on weekdays only.

With early voting for midterm elections underway, over 78,000 individuals in Wake County have cast their ballots as of Wednesday at early voting locations, including at Talley Student Union.

The following guide includes candidates for federal, state and local offices as well as the proposed amendments to the North Carolina Constitution, bond referenda and general election information.

Candidates: Federal Offices 4th Congressional District (Includes Wake County): These candidates are running to be the U.S. House Representative for North Carolina’s 4th congressional district. This district is located in the central region of the state and includes two-thirds of Raleigh, all of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough and portions of Durham. Each representative is elected to a two-year term serving the people of their specific congressional district. David Price has served in this position since 1997 and previously from 1987 to 1995.

Barbara Howe Libertarian

Howe is looking to end mass imprisonment for minor offenses and believes that the justice system should impose punishments that are more proportional to the crime committed. Howe wants to lower the cost of higher education without reducing its quality by having colleges reduce non-academic salaries and stop requiring interest payments on tuition. Lastly, Howe argues that DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) must be restored and strengthened and that illegal immigrants should be provided with a federally recognized legal status, allowing them to participate in economic and social life.

Steve A. Von Loor Von Loor promises to fight every piece of legislation that seeks to increase regulations on small businesses and to support cuts to the corporate tax rate. He believes that public schools must increase the presence of school resource officers to better protect themselves, and he wants to push for a voucher-based education program. On the issue of immigration, Van Loor promises to “wholeheartedly stand with President Trump in all his efforts to secure our borders and make America safe again.”

Amendments There are six proposed amendments to the North Carolina Constitution.

The Right to Hunt, Fish and Voter Identification Harvest Wildlife Amendment Amendment

This amendment would establish that public hunting and fishing are a “preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife.” These rights would only be subject to laws enacted by the NC General Assembly. If passed, the amendment would not affect any laws regarding trespassing, property rights or eminent domain.

Victims’ Rights Amendment

The North Carolina Constitution guarantees victims of certain crimes a number of rights, such as the right to be informed of and present at proceedings related to the accused. This amendment would strengthen protections for victims of crime, increase the victim’s number of rights and ensure the enforcement of these rights. It would also expand the types of offenses that trigger victims’ rights to include all crimes against the person and felony property crimes.

State Income Tax Cap Amendment

The current maximum personal and corporate income tax rate in the North Carolina Constitution is 10 percent. This amendment would lower it and cap it at 7 percent. This amendment would not reduce the current individual income tax rate of 5.499 percent, it only limits how much the state income tax rate could go up.

This amendment would require voters to show photographic identification before they are eligible to vote in-person. This amendment does not apply to absentee voting. The amendment would require the state legislature to pass laws to govern the photo ID requirement.

Judicial Vacancies Amendment

Currently, the Governor has sole appointment power of selecting a replacement judge to fill vacancies between judicial elections.

This amendment would limit the Governor’s current authority by giving the legislature the power to recommend a list of two or more finalists for any judicial vacancy. The Governor would then choose someone to fill the vacancy from this list.

Ethics and Elections Board Amendment

This amendment would reduce the current Bipartisan Board of Ethics and Elections from nine members to eight by removing the only member who represents unaffiliated voters. This amendment would remove the independent member of the board, leaving four Democrats and four Republicans.

The board is currently under the control of the executive branch, with the Governor in charge of appointing members. The amendment would give this power to the Senate leader and House speaker, placing the board under the legislature’s control.

Wake County Bond Referenda What it is: a bond referendum is when voters have the opportunity to vote for or against proposed spending for a unit of government.

Wake County Public School System Improvements Bond

This referendum asks voters if they want to approve $548 million in General Obligation bonds to fund the capital budget. This money will go toward new school construction, renovations technology upgrades, security improvements and other capital expenses. The referendum would also authorize a corresponding increase in property taxes to pay for the interest on the bonds.

The Wake Technical Community College 2018 Bond

This referendum asks voters to approve $349 million in bonds to fund new buildings for Wake Technical Community College over the next four years. The new buildings and projects include: automotive and collision repair building, advanced industries building and parking deck, health science building and parking deck, simulation and tactical response center, repair and replacement projects, infrastructure upgrades, a parking deck and additional classroom buildings. The referendum would also authorize a corresponding increase in property taxes to pay for the interest on the bonds.

Parks, Greenways, Recreation and Open Space Bond

This referendum asks voters to approve a $120 million, six-year bond for open space preservation, greenway development, new park and nature preserve construction, and existing park renovations. The referendum would also authorize a corresponding increase in property taxes to pay for the interest on the bonds.

No, both parties are not the same The past few elections have been divisive, highstakes and extremely consequential. This election cycle proves to be no different, with the stakes feeling higher than ever for a midKevin term election. These elecMoye tions appear to be deciding Staff Columnist our country’s direction on a host of different issues, foremost being its moral direction. With so much at risk, it is time that we do away with the notion of “both parties being the same.”

The narrative of “both parties being the same” is a false equivalency with little to no merit to it. When it comes to the most substantive policy issues, the contrasts between Democrats and Republicans are night and day.

One party accepts the overwhelming consensus of scientists in their acceptance of climate change, while the other still hesitates to accept its cause as fact. A study reported on by the New York Times showed that, nationally, only around 31 percent of Republicans believed climate change was

mostly caused by human activity.

While Republicans still muse over the veracity of these scientific truisms, the climate continues to be greatly affected by our out-of-control emissions. Recent reports have estimated that humans only have until 2030 to curb our contributions to climate change; otherwise, we will reach the climate point of no return. That’s a reality that our generation will be primarily in charge of adapting to, and it’s clear which party will pass policies now to help alleviate that burden.

Health insurance has become another hot-button issue where the difference between the two parties is clear. Nationally, Republicans dropped their initial idea of “repeal and replace” for a description I believe to be much more accurate: repeal and –. Legislation that would kick millions of Americans off their health care plans without a replacement was proposed numerous times in 2017, but all attempts ultimately failed.

North Carolina Republicans have shown similar intentions with their ploy to roll back the preexisting condition element of

Obamacare, one of its most widely popular features, which ensures that health insurance companies can’t discriminate against sick people.

The North Carolina Republican Party, just like many other Republican parties throughout the United States, is not interested in creating bipartisan policy; they are interested in creating a partisan policy that allows them to hold on to power as long as possible. An area where we can see this latest power grab is in one of the offices on the ballot this year: the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Most North Carolinians who have voted in the past will be surprised to see that North Carolina Justices now have party affiliations attached to them this year. That is because Justices of the North Carolina Supreme Court have not been in partisan races since 2002. In a last-ditch effort to consolidate power within the Republican Party, defeated Gov. Pat McCrory signed Senate Bill 4 into law, which put partisan labels on the ballot for appellate judicial elections. By adopting this legislation, McCrory and Republican lawmakers have

effectively demonstrated their preference for partisan victories over an impartial judiciary.

Republicans in North Carolina have brazenly shown their disregard for democracy in their attempts at voter suppression.

Not satisfied with the already grossly gerrymandered districts they produced, Republicans have taken it upon themselves to disenfranchise swathes of the North Carolina voting base too. Of course, Democrats are not perfect, but they at least have the decency to allow for legitimate elections to take place.

To voters that have bought into the myth of both parties being identical, I urge you to take in-depth looks at the policies the two parties are proposing. Democrats in their current iteration are by no means what we should settle for, but they have maintained a standard of human decency that the Republican party has lost. It is up to voters now to recognize the difference between the parties through their vote. If not, then the Republicans will continue to make it clear through the abhorrent policies they have forced on North Carolina.

A well-educated person is an asset for the society in any form of social structure. Although a specialized education is required for almost every field, the overall impact is generally the same: a person who, in their own ability, makes the world a better place.

However, one important question is, what should be the structure of the education that helps to shape a skilled individual? What are the factors which have the highest impact on education? The way I see it, education cannot be complete if it is limited in any form, be it race, religion, language or something else. One of the aims of education is to build a fair and just society, and unless education transcends all these barriers, it cannot achieve this goal.

For this reason, it is extremely important to incorporate diversity in education.

Programs at NC State like the recent Diversity Education Week help to highlight the variety of ways diversity appears in the university community, as well as how the university can try to be more inclusive of people from diverse backgrounds in its educational programs.

As an engineer, diversity in education ha s a n effect bot h on t he lea r ni ng a nd implementation of t he k nowledge that we have acquired through our education. Engineering would not have existed if science had not evolved, and if scientists from all over the world had not contributed to human knowledge the way they have.

In this sense, every engineer is indebted to diversity, which made innovations global instead of limiting them to different regions. Moreover, when I, as an en-

gineer, am a part of a group with people from different backgrounds, I realize how there can be multiple approaches to a given problem. These approaches are generally offered by people who are quite different from each other, in terms of nationality, religion, language or a combination of these factors.

Diversity helps an individual to realize that every person, whatever their background is, is an independent entity, and must be respected as such. Unfortunately, such a realization cannot take place once a person’s thought process has been firmly established and they have become used to perceiving things in a fashion based on their stereotypes.

Hence, this understanding must be developed while one is still in their formative years, and it is an important part of understanding how people who are a

product of some form of social system or hierarchy behave (or do not behave) in a fashion.

Another important aspect about diversity in education is that it helps solutions to one problem to be translated to an analogous problem from another entirely different field. For example, I am working on a research project that will enable me to apply machine learning methods to understand how genes interact.

I hope to ultimately solve farmers’ issues present in my home country by introducing more robust plants in farming. The people I am working with belong to different nationalities, and had it not been for diversity, I would probably not have this opportunity.

Diversity leads to an inclusive education, where every individual has an opportunity to grow by honing themselves in a globalized environment. This is beneficial both for the society and the individual. As engineers, we should see diversity as an opportunity to develop robust solutions which can be applied in a variety of situations and social structures, which will ultimately help us make the world a better place to live in.

NC State needs to Thoughts from get out the vote our readers: This summer, thousands of American students were buzzing with excitement about the midterm elections and the legendary power that young voters wield over this NovemMeredith ber’s outcome. Around Bain the same time, the Wake Guest Columnist County Board of Elections was debating the fate of the Talley Student Union early voting site. As we all are now aware, Talley was green-lighted as an early voting location; however, the excitement for voting in the NC State student body is heart-wrenchingly disappointing. For whatever reason, many NC State students are reluctant to vote. Here are some reasons you shouldn’t be.

1. Voting matters!!! According to 270 To Win, if “not voting” was a candidate in the 2016 presidential election, it would have won around 90 million individual and 470 Electoral College votes. The outcome may or may not have been different, but since those 90 million voters stayed home, we’ll never know.

So, if you’ve heard the pessimistic rumor that voting doesn’t matter, you should question it ruthlessly.

It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy; of course your vote doesn’t matter if it’s never cast!!

2. At the state level, constitutional amendments with wild consequences are on the ballot. Do you want criminal proceedings to cost more and take longer? Do you want to restrict our state’s ability to fund public programs through taxes? Yes or no, you can make your opinion heard.

3. Even closer to home, bond measures are up for a vote. You have the opportunity to expand public greenways and increase funding for Wake County public schools and community colleges, just by marking in a bubble! Think of how many lives that bubble can improve!

So, sure, voting is important, but maybe you’re worried about the time and effort it entails. After all, there’s standing in lines, filling out forms and extracurricular research on candidates to be done, and that’s

not a negligible commitment for a student!

But chill. It’s not actually that hard.

First of all, voting is quick! It took me less than 15 minutes to vote in Talley, and that included changing my voter registration.

Secondly, researching candidates is not as hard as you think. For a generation that can dig up their crush’s cousin’s dog’s favorite brand of lip balm with just two seconds and a smartphone, we should be more than capable of getting a sense of someone’s political beliefs and leadership plans before we vote.

And if you still doubt yourself, or if you prefer to defer to the judgment of experts, check for endorsements from trustworthy organizations that hold your positions on issues that are important to you.

For example, the Sierra Club publishes a list of endorsed candidates in North Carolina that have strong pro-environment platforms. If women’s healthcare is your thing, check the endorsements from Planned Parenthood. Like animals? Look at the Humane Society’s endorsements.

The possibilities are endless!! And if you’re still really unsure about choosing between two candidates, just skip over that race on the ballot. It’s voting, not an exam.

Third, you already have the paperwork you need to vote. If you registered before the Oct. 12 deadline, then you’ll be good to go; if not, just bring proof of residence and they’ll register you at the early voting site in Talley. The North Carolina State Board of Elections allows “current college/university photo identification card paired with proof of campus habitation” as a valid proof of residence for students wishing to register at their campus address.

If you’re unsure about your “proof of campus habitation,” check with your RA, but for me, showing the poll official my Raleigh address in my MyPack Portal account was sufficient. (Warning for the procrastinators: you can only register at early voting, NOT regular voting on Nov. 6!)

Open mic night lets students share their creativity Bella Petruccione Correspondent

Last Thursday, Oct. 18, NC State’s literary magazine, Windhover, hosted an open mic night in Caldwell Hall. The event was buzzing with aspiring poets, musicians, writers and everything in between, and provided a receptive environment, accepting of artists of every kind.

Through this event, students were able to find a platform where their creative voices could be heard.

“Windhover’s purpose, in terms of the whole student media thing, is just getting different aspects of literary, visual, any kind of student art out there,” said

Aubrey Izurieta, a second-year studying communication and the managing editor of Windhover. “This is just a really great platform for people to be able to express that artistic creativity and just get a vibe for what they have out there.”

This open mic event took many collaborative efforts to set up. In order to accommodate every performer, Windhover borrowed pieces of audio equipment from NC State’s WKNC student radio station.

Technical setup was only the first half, the other half being the Windhover staff working their hardest to get the word out about the event. “[Setting up the event] was mainly just spreading the word about it,” Izurieta

said. “We posted on social media, we shoved f lyers in peoples’ faces … It was mainly just getting the word out and letting people know it was happening and the exciting aspects of it.”

Windhover holds their open mic nights twice annually, in the spring and in the fall. Brock Sliter, a second-year studying political science, is a long-time author of short stories and enjoys performing live, including participating in open mic night.

“I’ve been performing my short stories for two or three years, and I just really like the Windhover community,” Sliter said. “They’re really nice and accepting.

or also perform.”

While Windhover open mic nights provide listening ears for one to perform their art to, they also provide an artistic safe haven from the general NC State student demographic.

“As a humanities student, it is nice to have events like this because it is easy to feel alienated or out of place, since NC State has such a focus on math and science. It’s good to be around people who care about literature and poetry,” Sliter said.

Learning about French culture with Le Cercle Français

Le Cercle Français is NC State’s French Cultural Club, whose mission is to expose and teach students all about the French culture in various interactive ways.

Jenna Albert, a fourth-year studying French education, is currently the club’s president and has been involved in the club since her first year at NC State.

Albert emphasized one role of the club as an outlet for students learning French to meet native speakers and strengthen their knowledge of the French language and culture.

“We serve as a community for students who are learning French, giving them an area where they can practice and an area where we can teach others about

the French culture, advertise the French culture, discuss it,” Albert said. “We like to have cultural and conversational exchanges with native speakers to practice the language. Being a community for French speakers and French learners is definitely a primary objective of ours.”

The club meets every other Wednesday in room 331 of Withers Hall, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. According to Albert, the meetings vary in theme, usually centering on one major aspect of the French culture.

“In our next meeting, we will give out ‘Le goûter,’ which is basically this kind of after school tradition in France where people are given an after school snack,” Albert said. “They typically have really sweet things like chocolate croissants or Nutella on bread or chocolate cookies, so we are going to have all of that food at

our next meeting for people to try, and we will explain this cultural phenomenon and discuss it with the French people.”

In addition to cultural events, many of the group’s meetings are also designed to help strengthen students’ knowledge of the French language.

“In the past, we’ve actually had more students who are learning French than actual native speakers, so we will do workshops on things like French slang or French phonetics, things that you might not learn in your actual French class at NC State,” Albert said. “This really helps people take their French language further, kind of like the cooler things that you don’t get to talk about in class.”

Albert described her favorite club event, the annual French cheese tasting that takes place at the end of the year.

“We get these cheeses from all over France to try and we pair it with bread, biscuits, jelly and other things, and it’s really delicious,” Albert said. “You don’t normally get to try French cheeses because in the grocery store, all we have is cheddar, and these cheeses that have almost no f lavor, at least when you’ve tried French cheese before. We do a lot of events with food because it is such a big part of the French culture, and we just love an excuse to eat food.”

Albert also mentioned a few different ways students can become involved in the club.

“If you reach out to me or any of the officers via email, we will surely add you to our email distribution list,” Albert said.

“Singing in front of people is very scary for me and, as I’ve gone away from being in a band to doing my own solo stuff, I’ve had to get used to that. It definitely took some nervousness and consideration before I signed up,” Wilkie said.

Wilkie said that she used open mic night as a way to be more creatively integrated into NC State’s student culture.

“I feel more connected on campus now.

I’m a freshman so it has been hard to find other artistic, musical people on campus… it is just nice to be in an inclusive area of creative people,” Wilkie said.

Now that the event itself has come and gone, Izurieta spoke about another way for students to share their work, namely through Windhover’s annual publication.

Coomer believes t hat, in order to fully learn a lang u a g e , s t u d e nt s must expose themselves to the culture that comes with it, which is exactly what Le Cercle Français offers.

“For students that are learning French, this puts a lifestyle to the language,” Coomer said. “This is the experience that goes with learning something. This is your little piece of France at NC State.”

Freshmen Ricky Person Jr. and Trent Pennix are two names that NC State football fans, and ACC fans in general, will want to remember.

Both are homegrown talents, from the heart of North Carolina itself. Person, a native of Wake Forest, attended Heritage High School, while Pennix, a native of Raleigh, attended Sanderson High School.

Heritage and Sanderson are a mere 30 minutes apart, and play each other often. In fact, Person and Pennix played against one another as recently as last year, with Heritage beating Sanderson 28-7, with each recording at least 90 yards and Pennix a touchdown.

Person and Pennix have been friends, and being able to be a part of the NC State offense as early as their freshman campaigns has been nothing short of remarkable for the pair.

“I didn’t feel pressure [at first], but once it got to the spring I started to feel pressure,” Person said. “I need to know this. I need to know that, and I just piled so much onto my shoulders that it was too much for me at first, and I had to think about it. I said just breathe, relax and just take everything one by one, and it just came to me.”

Coming into an established football team with high-level athletes is not an easy task for any true freshman. Person, a four-star recruit, and Pennix, a three-star recruit, both

had high tasks ahead of them coming onto this team, and had to be prepared to work as hard as they could to become adjusted despite their high recruitment ratings.

“Learning the playbook, it’s more technical than high school,” Pennix said. “All the pass protections. In high school we just ran and we just blocked. In college, it’s specific tracks you have to run and ways you have to run it, so it’s a lot more difficult.”

Person said almost the exact same thing, and that he had to put more time into his craft than ever before so that he could see the results he wanted on the field. Putting more time in for both of these backs has certainly paid off.

Person and Pennix are both all-purpose backs that have helped the Pack this year,

but Pennix has helped more in the air, while Person has stuck to the trenches. So far this season, Person has recorded 259 rushing yards on 49 attempts for an average of 5.3 yards per carry, and has only caught one pass for three yards.

Pennix on the other hand has 62 rushing yards on 20 attempts, but 74 receiving yards on five receptions with one touchdown.

Part of their production and seamless fit into the offensive schemes has been partially due to the veteran talents on the Pack football team. Pennix and Person are playing behind an experienced back in senior Reggie Gallaspy Jr., and Person said Gallaspy has helped him with his game the most.

This is not just a one-way street as both backs have helped Gallaspy and others on the

“It has helped a lot. Big competition,” Gallaspy said. “We didn’t really have that competition in the beginning, but it’s here now. Ricky is a different type of back. I’m shifting my speed and I’m more of a power back getting tough yards, so you know we complement each other. We just really battle and make sure that we talk smack to each other and just keep each other motivated, and it really brings out our skill sets on the field and the nature of competitiveness has really stepped up during the games.”

The electric-quick duo of Pennix and Person have already won over their locker room and teammates, and are both described as go-getters who would stop at nothing to help this team. Senior center Garrett Bradbury is a leader for NC State, and has seen the growth of the offense with the addition of Pennix.

“I think he just adds a playmaker to our offense,” Bradbury said. “I think he’s come in here and done a good job of just keeping his mouth shut and going to work. He’s not a super loud guy, he’s definitely not cocky. And you kind of respect that as an older guy when a younger guy comes in and can handle his business and you don’t have to hear about him getting in trouble or saying the wrong things.”

Running backs coach Des Kitchings has noted Person’s and Pennix’s skill sets and maturity on and off the field. Person has established himself as one of the Pack’s main backs, and Kitchings said his vision and ac-

NC State (5-1, 2-1 ACC) travels to Syracuse (5-2, 2-2 ACC) this Saturday after getting demolished 41-7 at Clemson. The Orange is undefeated in the Carrier Dome this season, thanks to a balanced offense that leads the ACC in scoring with 42.6 points per game.

Let’s take a look at how the Wolfpack’s defense matches up against the Orange offense: Syracuse QBs vs NC State Defense Syracuse head coach Dino Babers is in the same position Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was earlier this season, stuck choosing between a senior leader who has the respect of the locker room in Eric Dungey, and the more talented redshirt freshman in Tommy DeVito. Babers has Dungey listed at the starter this week, but DeVito will surely see the field after his impressive showing last week, taking over for a struggling Dungey in the fourth quarter to lead Syracuse to a 40-37 victory in double overtime.

Dungey is a solid player. His strongest asset is his running ability, leading the team with 477 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground this year. In order to stop the senior, the Wolfpack must limit his ability to leave the pocket either on designed runs or scrambles. Just like how Virginia’s Bryce Perkins was contained and forced to try and beat the Pack through the air, Dungey will have to showcase his arm on Saturday.

DeVito, on the other hand, has arm talent that you just can’t teach. Though he’s athletic, DeVito rarely exits the pocket.

Syracuse Offensive Line and Running Backs vs NC State Front Seven Syracuse has a stable of running backs led by junior Moe Neal. The 5-foot-11, 191-pound back is small but quick, always a threat to turn a 5-yard gain into a 20yard gasher. Senior Dontae Strickland is change of pace back, a bruising rusher.

Strickland has five touchdowns on the year on only 53 attempts. The Orange’s offensive line excels at opening holes during rush plays, a large part of why Syracuse ranks fifth in the ACC with 212.9 rush yards per game. In pass protection, the O-line is less impressive, allowing 2.14 sacks per game.

NC State’s defensive line and linebackers have been dominant this year, holding teams to only 104.7 rushing yards per game, ninth-best in the country. The xfactors on the defensive line are redshirt juniors defensive end James Smith-Williams and defensive tackle Larrell Murchison, who have a combined seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss this season. They’ll have their hands full trying to get after the quarterback as well as stuffing the run.

At the linebacker position, graduate Germaine Pratt has emerged as a legitimate early-round NFL draft prospect. Pratt is second on the team with three sacks, and his 9.5 tackles per game is leading the ACC. Pratt will have to be on his A-game as the primary tackler for the Pack.

the game, as Custis is DeVito’s favorite target. Freshman nickelback Tanner Ingle for NC State, will have the pleasure of taking Riley. Ingle has struggled in coverage, and that’s a weakness teams are looking to exploit. If he struggles, don’t be surprised if his backup Stephen Griffin takes over for him early on.

Syracuse Wide Receivers and Tight End vs NC State Secondary The Orange runs three wide receivers with a tight end that often lines up in the backfield. Senior tight end Ravian Pierce

doesn’t catch many balls, but he’s a definite red-zone threat. Junior slot receiver Sean Riley catches a lot of short passes, which are the basis of Syracuse’s offense.

Redshirt senior Jamal Custis is the deep threat, his average catch going for over 18 yards. The 6-foot-5 receiver leads the Orange in receiving yards by a large margin with 592, 268 more than the next closest wideout. Junior receiver Devin Butler rounds out the trio.

Riley and Custis are the two receivers that will cause headaches for NC State’s secondary. After getting picked on by Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, cornerbacks junior Nick McCloud and sophomore Chris Ingram will have something to prove on Saturday. McCloud will draw Custis, but he won’t be able to check him on his own. Expect a lot of safety help for him, especially when DeVito enters

Winning over the coaching staff is huge for guys like Pennix and Person, who come in as true freshmen and want to make a lasting impact on the team. However, both backs have dealt with injuries and have been on different timelines. Pennix played the first three games, but now has an injury. Person started the year injured, but has since found his place in the team.

Pennix coming back soon would be huge for a Wolfpack offense that would love to have as many backs as possible. The Pack would also like to have backs that can complement and play off of each other at an elite

level, much like Person and Gallaspy have in the last three games.

As for their confidence in their own production and future games?

“You always gotta be confident,” Person said. “Everyone puts on their pads the same way we do, we just gotta stick to ourselves and be disciplined and just play our game.”

Pennix has shown that same confidence as Person, despite dealing with injuries and inconsistent opportunities. For Pennix, it’s all about just doing what needs to be done.

“Being a freshman, you’re always going to get nervous,” Pennix said. “The goal is to get rid of those nerves and fears that each

freshman has. Just go out and do your job.

That’s all you can do. That’s the reason we get recruited.”

NC State lost to Clemson in blowout fashion Saturday, but the run game was one of the only bright points. Person and Gallaspy put up over 100 rushing yards and accounted for the only Pack touchdown of the game. More statement games from a run game that was in question near the beginning of the season will help alleviate any concerns from that side of the field.

With Gallaspy set to leave the program after the season, Person and Pennix will both be the face of the run game for years to come.

Keys to the Game In order for the Wolfpack to disrupt the Orange offense, the defensive line must contain Dungey in the pocket, and get pressure on DeVito. Pratt will have to continue his run as NC State’s best defensive player. In the secondary, McCloud will have to be physical against a bigger receiver and win his matchup against Custis and finally, either Ingle or Griffin must prove NC State has a nickel corner that can cover.

With graduate Brady Bodine receiving minimal snaps and freshman Trent Pennix continuing to deal with injury, Gallaspy and Person need to break through the D-line and avoid tackles from the linebackers in order to generate offensive electricity.

Wide Receivers vs. Secondary While Finley does his part of placing the ball for the receivers, the receivers need to capitalize on the moment. Both junior Kelvin Harmon and sophomore Emeka Emezie had drops that could have been avoided against Clemson. They need to show that they are capable of distancing themselves from the Syracuse secondary that has recorded 177 tackles so far this season.

This game can definitely come down to the wire, and the Pack needs many of those plays if they want to win. This will also be a redemption game for a receiving corps that only recorded 193 yards and did not record a touchdown against Clemson.

“I don’t know if there’s any one thing; I just don’t think we got in a rhythm,” Doeren said.

“Ryan, he made a really good throw to Kelvin on the one drop, and that was probably a momentum play that could have helped us in the
