Wolfpack looks for momentum swing against Wake Forest
Ryan Henkel
Correspondent
The NC State women’s basketball team (22-3, 9-3 ACC) looks to spring back from a 23-point loss to Notre Dame as they play host to Wake Forest Thursday night.
The Wolfpack has struggled as of late despite an amazing early run. After starting the season 21-0, the Pack has only won one of its last four games. NC State looked to have turned its luck around, ending its short two-game slide with a win over No. 16 Syracuse, but the Pack couldn’t keep up the pace against an outstanding Notre Dame team.
The Wolfpack managed to keep the score close and tied it at one point in the third quarter, but a 12-0 run response by Notre Dame signaled the end for the Pack as the Fighting Irish’s offense pulled away.
One of the biggest problems for the Wolfpack has been the absence of four of its key players. Junior forward Erika Cassell, redshirt junior guard Grace Hunter, redshirt senior guard Armani Hawkins and graduate guard Kaila Ealey have all been sidelined with knee injuries, and the burden has fallen onto the remaining players to bear, leaving a shortened bench.
Despite the absences, the Wolfpack has remained high in the rankings, a testament to the players and head coach Wes Moore’s determination and perseverance.
Freshman center Elissa Cunane has shone coming in after the injury to Cassell. She is currently averaging 13.2 points a game on 21.7 average minutes of playing time and shooting at nearly 60 percent.
Wake Forest (10-15, 1-11 ACC) has lost five straight games and currently sits 14th in the ACC standings. This game should be an easy win for an NC State team looking to correct its trajectory after a few bumps in the road, but as every Wolfpack fan knows, Wake Forest isn’t a team you can count out.
The game will tip off at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Reynolds Coliseum.

The NC State track and field teams will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia to compete in the 2019 ACC Indoor Championships Feb. 21-23 inside Rector Field House this weekend. With many successful runners and field competitors representing the Wolfpack, NC State has a good chance of finishing with multiple podium wins.
The event will kick off Thursday morning, when NC State competes in the heptathlon and pentathlon, and later that evening in the women’s DMR and men’s DMR.
Currently, NC State claims 13 spots in the top five marks within the ACC, including competitors junior Cravont Charleston, sophomore Von Douglas, redshirt senior Lauren Evans and junior Elly Henes.
As for nationwide rankings, the Wolfpack sits in the top 15 in qualifying marks for five events. Obtaining the No. 2 spot is Charleston, who ran a 6.54 in the 60-meter run, and not too far behind him is senior Gabriele Cunningham, also running the 60-meter in 7.25.
The Wolfpack earned seven ACC Performer of the Week honors during its 2019 indoor track and field season, with Evans and Charleston leading the awards.
As the most recent ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week, Evans has officially secured three ACC honors this season, placing in 15 podium finishes out of 16. The senior earned gold at the Virginia Tech Challenge when she threw a shot put of 66’7” last weekend. This was the fourth-best performance in program history at NC State.
Charleston followed closely behind Evans, earning two ACC honors this season, with his most recent as ACC Performer of the Week, after breaking his own record at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Running a 6.54, the junior holds the third-fastest time in the nation recorded this season.
Last season, NC State had two individual conference titles at the ACC Championships when Joshua Davis took home a title in the men’s weight throw and Elly Henes secured the gold in the women’s 3,000-meter. As a team, the men placed fifth place and the women placed eighth.
The winners of this year’s events will be determined by the order of finish. The medalists in each individual event will earn first-team All-ACC honors, along with the four members of the first-place team in each relay.

Baseball heads to South Carolina for tough weekend slate
Alec Sawyer
Assistant Sports Editor
After an efficient opening-series sweep over Bucknell and a shutout midweek win at Elon, the NC State baseball team will travel to South Carolina this weekend for three games.
The Wolfpack (4-0) will play Kent State Friday at TicketReturn.com Field, home to the minor-league Myrtle Beach Pelicans, before taking on Michigan State Saturday and Coastal Carolina Sunday, with both of those games coming at Coastal’s Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway.
The Pack’s offense has been red-hot to start the season, with NC State scoring nearly 10 runs per game through four contests. Senior first baseman Evan Edwards has led the charge, as he has clubbed two home runs and eight RBIs already this year. Edwards’ early season on-base plus slugging percentage is a very stellar 1.365.
Junior shortstop Will Wilson also has two homers so far. Another early standout for NC State has been freshman infielder Vojtech Mensik, who has started two games and is hitting 5 for 11. Three of those five hits for the product of the Czech Republic have gone for extra bases, as Mensik has two doubles and one triple.
On the mound, the Wolfpack started junior Jason Parker, sophomore Canaan Silver and sophomore Nick Swiney for the opening series, with Parker having the strongest outing. Parker allowed just one run over five innings.
The starting rotation this weekend could be very different for NC State this weekend, as the Wolfpack has a lot of talent on the mound, and head coach Elliott Avent will likely use the first months of the season to try and find the right group of starters.
One relief pitcher that stood out for the Pack in its opening week was redshirt sophomore Dalton Feeney, who missed all of last season with an elbow injury. Feeney has made two appearances so far this year, and has yet to allow a hit over 2.1 innings of work.
It will be a unique weekend for the Wolfpack, facing three different opponents rather than just one. Here’s what to expect from each of the three teams:
Kent State
The Golden Flashes (0-3) had a very strong 2018 campaign, finishing 40-18 with a MAC title. Kent State went to the Lubbock, Texas regional of the NCAA Tournament as a three seed, going 1-2 with both losses coming to Louisville.
In their opening weekend of this season, the Golden Flashes were swept on the road by a perennially good Dallas Baptist team. Lefty Connor Wollersheim pitched the Friday game for Kent State last weekend and had a decent outing. Despite walking four, Wollersheim allowed no earned runs over five innings to go along with six punchouts. If Wollersheim gets the ball again on Friday, he’ll be a tough draw for the Pack.
At the plate, Collin Mathews and Michael Turner led the way. Mathews went 2 for 5 with the team’s only home run, while Turner finished the weekend 3 for 8 with three runs scored.
Kent State struggled to produce offensively all weekend against Dallas Baptist, and it won’t get easier against a good NC State pitching staff.
Michigan State
The worst of the three teams NC State will face this weekend, the Spartans (1-2) started their season off with a series loss on the road against New Orleans. Last season, Michigan State went just 20-32 and failed to make the NCAA Tournament.
Righty Mike Mokma got the Saturday start and the loss against New Orleans, tossing five innings while allowing three runs. As a staff, Michigan State posted an ugly 5.04 ERA in its opening weekend of play.
At the plate, Royce Ando stood out for the Spartans in week one. He went 5 for 11, posted an OPS of 1.500 and hit one of three Michigan State home runs. The Spartans offense started the series in New Orleans with an eight-run outburst, but plated just one and four runs in the next two games, respectively.
Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers have turned themselves into a baseball powerhouse over the past few years and are off to a 4-0 start in 2019. Coastal didn’t play a traditional series to start the season, but has already beaten a couple good teams. The Chanticleers have wins over VCU, Maryland, Campbell and UNCWilmington to kick off the season.
Coastal, which hosted an NCAA regional last season, brings an incredibly potent offensive attack to the field. The Chanticleers are putting 9.5 runs per game so far this year, and are allowing under five per game.
Coastal has hit four home runs in as many games this season, and has an outstanding team OPS of .967. First baseman Zach Biermann has a team-leading seven hits and six RBIs, and has one home run.
On the mound, lefty freshman Garrett McDaniels started on Sunday last week and didn’t allow a run over four innings of work. As a staff, the Chanticleers have a 3.75 ERA and are allowing opponents to hit .256.
NC State will have a tough time slowing Coastal’s offense, but has the opportunity for a very strong out-of-conference resume builder early in the season. The Wolfpack faithful will want to forget about the last time the two schools met, when Coastal scored four runs in the ninth inning of the final game of the 2016 Raleigh regional en route to a national championship.
Friday’s game against Kent State will start at 2 p.m., Saturday’s game against Michigan State will be at 11 a.m. and Sunday’s finale against Coastal will begin at 3 p.m.
SARAH COCHRAN/TECHNICIAN Junior infielder Will Wilson hits a home run against the Bucknell Bison on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019 at Doak Field. Wilson went 2-3 with one home run, three runs batted in and two runs scored in the Wolfpack’s 14-2 win.
DAVID TRACEY/TECHNICIAN Redshirt sophomore pitcher Dalton Feeney warms up between innings against Bucknell on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 at Doak Field. Feeney pitched two innings, giving up zero hits and striking out four. The Wolfpack won 8-2.

Pack wrestling looks to finish out strong
JAYLAN HARRINGTON/TECHNICIAN Daniel Bullard, a redshirt sophomore in the 174-pound weight class, wrestles UNC-Chapel Hill redshirt sophomore Devin Kane on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 in Carmichael Arena. The Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels 20-14.

Staff Writer
The NC State wrestling team will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia this weekend to square off against the Virginia Tech Hokies in their final meet of the regular season. The No. 10 Pack (15-3, 3-1 ACC) is coming off a big rivalry victory over the UNC-Chapel Hill Tar Heels this past Friday with a score of 20-14.
The Hokies (9-4, 3-1 ACC) come into the match ranked No. 14 in the country, coming off a dominating 30-6 win over their rival Virginia.
Here are some of the potential big matchups we could see in the meet:
HAYDEN HIDLAY
Redshirt sophomore Hayden Hidlay comes into the match ranked No. 4 in the 157-pound weight class with a 17-2 record. In his last match, he picked up an 18-6 decision and earned a bonus point for the Pack. He will potentially match up against B.C. LaPrade, who is 14-7 on the year with three major decisions.
NICK REENAN
Redshirt sophomore Nick Reenan enters Friday as the third-ranked wrestler in the 184-pound weight class. Reenan boasts a 12-2 record on the season overall and is 2-1 in ACC competition. He’ll have a very difficult match this weekend against the fifth-ranked Zack Zavatsky. Both wrestlers are coming off wins this past weekend. Zavatsky comes in with a 21-3 record and six major decisions.
JUSTIN OLIVER
Graduate Justin Oliver has been a stellar performer in the 149-pound weight class over the years as a three-time NCAA Qualifier. The Central Michigan transfer enters the match against Virginia Tech with a 14-4 record this season and four major decisions. He will be looking to rebound this weekend after a tough loss last week at Chapel Hill.
Oliver will be matching up against the Hokies’ Ryan Blees, who has had a more difficult senior season compared to his past two, where he qualified for the NCAA tournament twice. However, he is coming off a win this past weekend.
JAYLAN HARRINGTON/TECHNICIAN Nick Reenan, a redshirt sophomore in the 184-pound weight class, wrestles UNC-Chapel Hill redshirt senior Chip Ness on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 in Carmichael Arena. The Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels 20-14.
DANIEL BULLARD
In the 174-pound weight class, redshirt sophomore Daniel Bullard ranks No. 23 in the country going into the final match of the regular season. Bullard was an NCAA qualifier in 2018 and has a 17-7 record on the season, going 2-2 in ACC matches thus far. He looks to match up against No. 7 David McFadden, who’s posted an impressive 15-2 record on the season and is 4-0 in conference. McFadden has been a top-three wrestler for the Hokies throughout the year.
The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. this Friday at Virginia Tech and can be seen live on ACC Network Extra.
