Mark Harris request to certify win denied

NEWS

Mark Harris, the Republican candidate from N.C. District 9, narrowly won the congressional election of November last year. Now, the results of that election are under investigation for being fraudulent in the handling of mail-in absentee ballots. On Jan. 22, a hearing was held after Harris and his legal team requested that Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway certify the results of the election, despite the ongoing investigation. According to The News & Observer, Ridgeway stated that it would be inappropriate for him to order election officials to certify the results while there is still an investigation underway, thus denying the request. Currently, there is no official board of elections because the previous board was dissolved after it was declared unconstitutional. The new board will come into their roles on Jan. 31, and professional staff members will continue to work on the investigation in the meantime.

No State of the Union Address On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that President Donald Trump would not be allowed to deliver the State of the Union address so long as the government is still shut down. According to CNN, Trump was planning on giving the speech from the U.S. House Chamber last week. However, Pelosi refused to bring the plan to the House floor for a vote. “I am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s state of the Union address in the House Chamber until the government has opened,” Pelosi said. As speaker, it is part of Pelosi’s role to invite the President to give the constitutionally-required annual address in the U.S. House Chamber, so it is unclear what resolution Trump and Pelosi will come to. The President has yet to formally respond.

One person was killed and two more injured after a serious construction accident in North Raleigh near Triangle Town Center mall in Raleigh. Construction was ongoing for an apartment complex owned

by Harold K. Jordan & Co., and they are working with the N.C. Department of Labor to investigate the accident. According to The News & Observer, there have been a number of violations against the company from the N.C. Department of Labor, 14 of them issued between 2009 and 2017. A few of these were considered “serious” violations for not having proper protections for workers.

Trends show increased reporting of sexual assault on campus Amber Detwiler Staff Writer

More student survivors are reporting incidents of sexual assault on campus, giving campus community centers more data and ability to provide survivors with resources they may need during the reporting process.

The 2018 Security & Fire Safety Report, released in fall 2018, displays the 2017 crime and fire data that occurred on university property, with two preceding years as well.

Major Ian Kendrick, support services commander of the NC State University Police Department, explains what this data means in terms of sexual assault statistics, the general trend being an increase in number of incidents reported on campus.

Janine Kossen, associate director of the Women’s Center, said that sexual assault is the most underreported crime in the U.S. and in the greater community, less than 40 percent of sexual assault incidents are reported. On college campuses less than 10 percent are reported.

“It is really important to know that any type of interpersonal violence – rape, stalking, domestic violence, and dating violence – is vastly underreported, especially on college campuses,” Kossen said. “A lot of times, what people see when they are looking year-to-year is this jump, or increase, and they think that means campus is less safe. It is actually a good thing when the numbers go up because it means [survivors] trust the system, they feel safe coming forward, and they feel supported.”

Based on the Security & Fire Safety Report, incidents of rape went from 9 to 32 to 18, stalking from 27 to 22 to 29 and dating violence from 5 to 34 to 20 in the years 2015-17 respectively. In 2016, one individual reported being raped approximately 20 times by an individual with whom they were in a dating relationship, this being ref lected as 20 separate incidences in the 2016 rape and dating violence statistics due to the Clery Act. “The Women’s Center, from our data, we have just last semester had more cases of students coming to us than all of the previous academic year,” Kossen said. “A lot of that is a direct result of the larger culture. Last year, October/November

was a huge peak for us with the Women’s Center, which correlated with the beginning of the #MeToo movement.”

Many survivors still face barriers coming forward, ranging from victimblaming to simply not knowing how to do so. Kossen said that trend analysis from the Women’s Center over the past three years showed that counseling support and academic accommodations have been the two most requested resources among survivors who reach out to the Women’s Center.

“You can go to places like the Women’s Center to report, you can report to your RA if you live in a residence hall, you can report to someone at the [GLBT] Center,” Kendrick said. “What we are interested in is survivors getting the information to someone they trust, whether they want to prosecute or not, or whether they want the police to get involved or not,

the first step is getting the information to someone they trust. Ultimately that will start leading into being connected with resources: getting assistance for the trauma, getting medical assistance perhaps, counseling, you name it, but that is the first step.”

Kendrick said that sur vivors who choose to speak to a Campus Security Authority, which is typically a trained professor or resident advisor, may remain anonymous in that Authority’s report to campus police.

“If a survivor wants the police involved, great,” Kendrick said. “We will absolutely sit down and open the investigation.

Through the investigation, the survivor still has the option to prosecute the case. If they don’t prosecute, no problem, but we always have the option from the university to send someone to Student Conduct.”

Kendrick said that while statistically it is more likely that a survivor is not interested in prosecuting, he would ideally like to see every survivor prosecute a case in order to remove offenders from campus.

“The key is to report it,” Kendrick said. “Go to somebody you trust and are comfortable talking to, and just start the process of talking about it and getting connected to resources.”

If a student is experiencing relationship violence, sexual violence or stalking, and is in need of advocacy services, the Women’s Center has advocates available from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday in room 5210 of Talley Student Union.

RAs, RMs, others provide student support when reporting campus crimes Abbie Davies-Cutting Correspondent

Because students living on campus commonly interact with Resident Advisors (RAs) and Resident Mentors (RMs), they are typically the first contacts a survivor has during the process of a crime such as sexual assault. RAs, as well as other officials who work heavily with students, work hand in hand with campus law enforcement to ensure the safety and well-being of these survivors.

Major Ian Kendrick of NC State Police, the commander of Support Services, spoke about the role RAs play as Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) and how they are typically the first support system a survivor can encounter during the reporting process of sexual assault.

“As [CSAs], if a student or somebody else discloses to them that they are the victim of any crime, specifically sexual assault or sexual harassment, dating violence or relationship violence, that [CSA] is required to report to the police department,” Kendrick said.

A CSA is a title held by members of the NC State community who work with students closely to prioritize their safety and comfort. All CSAs complete training sessions, either in person or online, that are conducted by Campus Police.

The requirement of having CSAs on public college campuses is part of a federal consumer protection law, the Clery Act, that was passed in 1990. It requires that a university publishes crime statistics, security policies and safety information to the public. A CSA, such as an RA or RM, is federally mandated by the Clery Act to report a crime to Campus Police when it is disclosed to them.

For this reason, RAs and RMs are required to report the occurrence of sexual assault to campus police if a resident informs them of an incident. According to Kendrick, RAs and RMs can also help refer survivors to other on-campus resources such as the Counseling Center, Women’s Center or GLBT Center to provide further support.

After a report has been made by the CSA, campus law enforcement will write a criminal report and investigate the act.

“We are likely to make contact with the suspect,” Kendrick said. “Get his or her side of the story, maybe talk to any witnesses if

they are disclosed to us or if we find out of any witnesses, and try and get some thirdparty insight into what transpired.”

Kendrick said that the role of an RA partly exists to create a positive environment in which students can disclose concerns or incidents that have happened to them, such as sexual assault.

Barry Olson, associate vice chancellor of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA), said that when a survivor chooses to report an incident, they have the opportunity to maintain anonymity during the process.

“We give you the right as the student to say, ‘I’d rather it be anonymous,’” Olson said. “Students do have some level of control over how they share that information, but

as a responsible employee, our folks have to take a report.”

As the report is further investigated, campus law enforcement will take precautions to ensure the survivor is in a more comfortable state by investigating the perpetrator, if a name is given, on a university level without pressing legal charges. This ensures that a student remains as anonymous as possible.

“The report is accepted; however, the student’s name isn’t necessarily shared if the police say that it shouldn’t be shared,” Olson said. “It would be shared in a general fashion: ‘A female student in my building shared a concern.’”

RAs specifically are required to attend training sessions held by the police at the

beginning of each semester to further help them aid sexual assault survivors when an assault is reported to them.

“Our staff goes through Title IX training, they go through counseling training [and] they go through all those different layers to better understand the human condition,” Olson said. “They spend two solid weeks training and learning.”

Olsen said that campus law enforcement and University Housing encourage students to remember that RAs and RMs are resources who can aid survivors of sexual assault through the reporting and recovery process.

NC State offers free online therapeutic assistance

NC State now has an online therapeutic resource for students struggling with mental health that can be accessed any day and at any time.

Therapy Assisted Online, or TAO, is an interactive, online program that provides various behavioral health resources for students. TAO consists of interactive modules, self-assessments, practice tools, daily logs and journals that help teach students how to manage stress, anxiety, depression and other concerns.

Richard Tyler-Walker, associate director of operations and training, spoke about the ways in which TAO can be used.

“There are a number of challenges that people face in life where the resource they need is maybe a little bit of information and a little bit of tools,” Tyler-Walker said.

“We are implementing TAO in a way that is both. People can access it as a self-help format, where they have full access toward this range of tools, and they can come into

the Counseling Center and utilize it as part of their ongoing therapeutic approach.”

Students can access TAO in between counseling appointments and on their own time. According to Tyler-Walker, students are not required to meet in person, but do have the opportunity to speak with a therapist at the Counseling Center as well.

“If someone has already done some work in a self-help format and then they come into the Counseling Center, with their permission their counselor can access the information that they have been working on and then just incorporate it into their ongoing treatment approach,” Tyler-Walker said. “Sometimes it helps refine a focus, but there is absolutely no requirement that someone does TAO before they come to the Counseling Center.”

Monica Osburn, executive director of the Counseling Center and Prevention Services, said that students can utilize the resource as a way to aid their mental health needs.

“It can be used a couple different ways,” Osburn said. “One, as a companion service

to therapy to assist in the process. It can also be used as a stand-alone resource. For example, if you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety or just want tools to know what to do when you start to have that anxiety amp up, you can go through these modules and learn tools on how to manage those symptoms. It gives students the ability to do this at their own pace. Whatever hours make sense for them in a format that fits more students’ level of comfort.”

According to Tyler-Walker, one of the ways in which people start TAO is by taking a self-assessment. With the information provided by these assessments, TAO can help the student identify what it is they may be struggling with and can then recommend specific modules to the student.

“TAO actually has the ability to provide people with guidance,” Tyler-Walker said. “It may say ‘people with responses consistent to yours are struggling with anxiety; you may want to check out the anxiety module.’ The students can still go through and do all of the other modules too, but it sometimes gives them a little

bit of a starting point or direction… It can really help a student clarify or focus what their concerns are.”

Tyler-Walker spoke about TAO’s role in promoting resilience in students when they are facing stressful situations.

“It really teaches [students] their ability to cope and handle,” Tyler-Walker said. “If they feel really stressed and overwhelmed, they are able to calm themselves down or soothe themselves and refocus their motivation so that they can eliminate things that are extraneous and focus on the things that have priority. Promoting resiliency helps people understand and draw from their own strength.”

While TAO is relatively new to NC State, it was created by the former counseling center director at the University of Florida in 2012. The Division of Academic and Student Affairs purchased TAO in August as a free resource for students.

According to Osburn, NC State only recently adopted this program after ensuring the program’s ability to create change and be a successful resource for students.

“It was important for me to ensure that the research foundation was there before we adopted a tool for NC State,” Osburn said. “The research is really strong about it being able to teach those skills to students, and as a companion to the work that we already do. It was a natural fit for consideration for us. We took the summer and fall to really get all the clinicians familiar with it. So far, the preliminary feedback is very positive.”

The Counseling Center is looking for ways to implement TAO in other departments focused on student wellness across campus to make students more aware of the service and make it accessible to more students.

“Part of what our goal this semester is to figure out how this tool can also be launched in other areas, for example Wellness and Recreation, Student Health and Prevention Services,” Osburn said. “We want students to be able to have access to the modules in many different arenas and also have the support from different departments, as well. We feel like we are in a position now to do a broader launch with the whole campus community.”

On Monday, Jan. 21, screenshots of a GroupMe chat with students at NC State containing racial slurs circulated through Twitter.

This comes just two years after the “Sullivan Squad” GroupMe chat, which heightened racial tension on campus, became public.

The screenshots were taken by Saba Hosseinzadeh, a graduate student studying physiology and a member of the GroupMe chat.

The primary individuals engaged in the group chat were Monty (last name unknown), Cole Blinton, and Garrett Sanderson, who was charged with simple assault on Aug. 26, 2018 by the Raleigh Police Department.

According to Hosseinzadeh, the GroupMe message thread was created for people living in Signature 1505, formerly known as Theory Raleigh, her apartment complex. However, the chat is not affiliated with the complex in any way.

Throughout the year, the GroupMe has been used to update tenants about social events and parties that were happening on and/or around campus.

According to Hosseinzadeh, the language used in the GroupMe message had been used in prior incidents. This was just the first time she chose to speak out against it.

“They have used that word and other racist language before, but I never spoke up for it before, to be honest,” Hosseinzadeh said. “I was more concerned for my safety, but it gets to a point where it’s just disgusting and they need to stop being a piece-of-crap human being.”

Hosseinzadeh observed that many people started leaving the GroupMe after Sanderson began to make more comments. She said that was when she decided to stand up to him.

“I just knew I had to say something,” Hosseinzadeh said. “Because if you go to NC State, you are representing the school, and that’s just a horrible representation of NC State.”

Sanderson, a second-year studying sport management, said through private messages on Twitter that he didn’t see his language as offensive, nor did he intend to offend any members of the chat.

“All I have to say is, I didn’t use it towards anyone and wouldn’t ever use it to offend anyone,” Sanderson said. “All of my friends that

are African American accept me and tell me to say that word because it is friendly, so I use it towards my friends.”

Hosseinzadeh said that she told the apartment complex details of the message thread because she was concerned for her safety.

In the GroupMe chat, Sanderson made a comment directed at Hosseinzadeh, saying “the place I come from u die saying wrong shit to the wrong person.” Hosseinzadeh was removed from the chat shortly after.

There have been previous incidents where NC State students used racial slurs in private messaging groups, most notably a GroupMe chat named “Sullivan Squad” that was made public in September 2016. Hosseinzadeh said that she wanted the university to acknowledge and condemn the remarks made by students on campus.

“I tweeted it because social media in this day and age has the power to unite people and also help them face consequences for their actions,” Hosseinzadeh said. “I wanted other people at my school to be aware that this is what is happening, and they deserve to know, especially the black community, that they are going to school with a bigot.”

Hosseinzadeh said that she hopes that the exposure the tweet gets on social media will cause the university to speak out against racist remarks on NC State’s campus.

“I was hoping that it would get enough exposure that everyone starts to tweet the chancellor or the dean,” Hosseinzadeh said.

“The strength comes in the pack, right? That’s what we say. So, if it was just me, a lone wolf, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish as much, but if there are many other people taking action, there will be more light shed on this issue.”

Hosseinzadeh said that she would report the incident to campus police on Tuesday. She stated that she doesn’t want anything bad to happen to Sanderson; she just wants him to realize what he has done is wrong and hurtful.

“I’m going to NC State Police tomorrow,” Hosseinzadeh said. “It’s better than being a bystander and saying nothing about it.”

The Office of the Student Body President released a statement signed by members of the Executive Branch, student senators, and University Activity Board chair members. The statement condemned the messages, saying that they incite hate and violence that threatens black students and NC State students as a whole.

“The attitudes expressed in these messages fall far short of the expectations and goals we have for the students, faculty, and staff who together make up the Wolfpack, and in no way represent what we, the signatories, stand for,” the statement reads.

Student Body President Jess Errico, a fifthyear studying mechanical and aerospace engineering, said that this incident reaffirmed her belief that more of an effort must be made to make the campus community more inclusive.

“The mindset those messages represent is threatening to black students on campus in this incident, and the past incident from 2016 reaffirms that we are in need of a cultural competency training that better informs what [Student Government] is doing to work to challenge the community [to be] inclusive and equitable,” Errico said. “Our community needs far more than that, but it is my fear that additional efforts won’t be possible. It is my hope that we will go above and beyond in creating a space and a campus that is inclusive and challenges our students to be inclusive.”

Errico said that she has been working with student organizations to figure out ways Student Government can help support black students at NC State.

“We are here to listen,” Errico said. “Please let us know how we can support you, because we will be using our voice and I will be using my voice as student body president to support impacted students, but I am mindful that I am not speaking for them. As student body president, I want to make sure that I am helping to create additional spaces and more opportunities for the black community to share, which is why I’ve reached out to student orgs who represent and support black students on campus to see how I can best do that.”

In a joint email statement from Mike Mullen, vice chancellor for the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, and Sheri Schwab, the interim vice provost for the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, it was revealed that the university is reviewing the incident and the Bias Impact Response Team (BIRT) will be responsible for following up on the concern.

“As you can imagine, we began reviewing this concern as soon as it came to our attention,” the email reads. “At NC State, we hold and work diligently to promote our values — especially those of diversity, respect and creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. The deplorable statements made in the GroupMe chat are clearly in opposition to those shared campus values.”

The statement goes on to explain that BIRT focuses on how the impact of a situation can affect a community and is a mechanism where students, faculty and staff can bring forth their concerns. BIRT will then provide the necessary review, response and resources to address the incident.

Additionally, Schwab and Mullen stated that they have reached out to the student who shared the GroupMe messages via Twitter to talk about the next steps to take to deal with the concern.

In North Carolina alone, we still face some of the same issues that King championed solving. Racism is much less overt and pernicious than it was in the 1960s; however, it still manages to rear its ugly head in our current society. The now 55-year-old war on poverty, a fight which King carried on, also continues to roar on.

The most obvious grievance poor people and minorities continue to face in North Carolina are our restrictive voter ID laws. These laws have been assessed to be a superf luous barrier that prevents black people from voting and targets them with “surgical precision.” Despite drawing national criticism, the newest iteration of voter ID laws has made its way back to NC following a vote to add the laws to our state constitution in 2018.

While voter suppression may be the most familiar form of discrimination against vulnerable groups, it is certainly not the only means by which these groups are targeted. Environmental racism is yet another form of discrimination that has plagued poor people and minorities since King was alive.

Duplin County is currently embroiled in legal battles between some of its black residents and local hog farmers. The state has failed to provide the residents of this area adequate protections against the toxic emissions from these farms, and this has resulted in increased rates of “infant mortality, mortality due to anemia, kidney disease [and] tuberculosis.”

It is common knowledge that King advocated for an end to racist legislation, but a less well-known aspect of his life was his championing for the poor in America. Before his death, King created the Poor People’s Campaign to help liberate the working class in America.

Today, the working class find themselves in a position that is all too familiar

— a time where inequality runs amok. In North Carolina, income inequality has passed levels of where it was preceding the Great Recession. The top 1 percent in North Carolina took home 17 percent of all state income in 2015. Households within the top 5 percent earn incomes that are 15 times as large as the average income of households in the bottom 20 percent.

Economic problems are only exacerbated for minorities within our state.

Unemployment rates for black workers are twice as high as for white workers.

When adjusting for race, the picture of wealth inequality becomes even gloomier.

In 2010, about 48 percent of minority residents lived in asset poverty while only 17 percent of white residents did. Even more alarmingly, a study conducted by the University of North Carolina found that half of all black households in N.C. had savings of less than $100.

Black family wealth pales in comparison to white families in our state, and that gap is only growing. The wealth gap between white and black households increased from $20,000 to $95,000 between 1984 and 2007. For every dollar in wealth white North Carolinians have, black residents own a measly 13 cents.

This is not to say that all efforts of creating the image of the America that King had in mind have come to a complete halt. In fact, a resident of North Carolina, the Rev. William Barber II, has revived MLK’s Poor People’s Campaign to revitalize the national discussion around wealth inequality. Already, Democratic candidates running for president in 2020 are attempting to embody some of the principles King preached, but it is up to us citizens to provide them a platform to enact any change.

Instead of just remembering Martin Luther King Jr. for what he wanted to accomplish, we should remember his visions as goals that we can and should bring forth ourselves. As the wise leader once said himself, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” And so, we must continue in our struggle to create a more righteous society, just as King sought out to do decades ago.

Get the jump on internships Let’s be real. The vast majority of us often-mischaracterized students, at some point or another, do live up to one of our biggest stereotypes: We’re not afraid to procrastinate.

Colin Hopefully, if you are a McKnight Staff Columnist procrastinator, some of the things that you are not holding off for another day are the search for internships and your career success in general. Career counselor Penny Loretto for The Balance Careers sums it up: “Internships are a proven way to gain relevant knowledge, skills, and experience while establishing important connections in the field.”

It’s tempting to go, “Hey, I’m only a freshman, or a sophomore, so I can hold off on that for a bit.” But that goes against the entire reason that most people go to college. We’re here to gain the knowledge and experience to jump into the professional world, and you have to use all the time and opportunities paid for by your tuition to compete in this extremely competitive world. That hurts me to say, because I’m naturally a very noncompetitive person, but the best internships and jobs will fly right by you and into someone else’s hands if you don’t give it your all.

Of course, for your first semester or so, it’s probably not productive to seek top-tier internships, or potentially any internships at all. You definitely have a “grace period” at the beginning of your college career that you should dedicate to getting used to your college life and getting a rough estimate of where you want to go from there.

After that, though, you should get to work looking for work.

The biggest hoop is your resume and cover letter. Meet with career counselors if you can, and work on making your career documents professional and impressive for employers. One of the best pieces of career advice I ever heard was to make cover letters for all listings, even if they don’t ask for them. It’s a small part of the job search process that won’t take you longer than 10 minutes, but it puts you above a large part of your competition.

Personally, internship hunting was something I stressed over, and made some mistakes with, for a long time. I just landed my first internship recently, but the whole process before that kept me up for far more nights than I’d like to admit. “Where should I apply?” “What is my skill set?” “Am I ready for a professiona l internship in a course that I’m still relatively new to?” A million and one similar other questions kept me up at nig ht. A lthough I eventually landed one, I could have gotten started even earlier.

As I previously mentioned, you aren’t the only one looking for a step up. There are others eyeing the same position you are, and they’re just as hungry. The earlier you start, the earlier you can pad out your resume with various skills and experiences, and the earlier you can beat your competitors to the punch. If you’re still trying to find stable footing at college, that’s fine. But make sure you don’t use that as just an excuse to hold off on the next step of your career, like I did.

If you’ve got a bunch of questions about what you’re even supposed to be doing, like I did, I highly advise using the resources available here at NC State, because they answered a large chunk of the thousand questions that I had.

Dig into NC State’s Geology Club Maggie Harper Correspondent

NC State is home to a wide variety of clubs. Each of these unique groups represents a variety of interests, with on-campus organizations focusing on topics from video games to STEM-related clubs. Geology Club is one of these many groups. Geology Club’s goals are to get students outside, and to educate the public through functions like elementary school science fairs.

Charlie Detelich, a fifth-year studying geology and president of the club, spoke about the group. “[It’s] a way for other geology students to get together and find resources for career internships and opportunities for community outreach,” Detelich said.

Detelich also mentioned about some of her favorite memories from her four years as a member of the club.

“We used to hike a lot more, and we’re trying to bring that back,” Detelich said.

“We’re working on planning a hiking trip [for] this semester.”

One of the trips Geology Club has consistently taken over the years is their annual trek out west. Each fall, the department offers a one-credit class that meets twice over the course of the semester and takes its participants to spend their fall break camping out in a national park. In the past, they have visited iconic sites such as the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Meteor Crater National park. Next year, their plan is to head to Mount St. Helens, according to Detelich.

Detelich also spoke about how the club has good contacts for getting people connected to internships and potential jobs after college. Over her past two years as president, she has gained priceless leadership skills and networking opportunities.

The club offers a communal aspect, as mentioned by Laurie Howard, a fourth-year studying geology and the club’s secretary.

“It’s primarily a social club,” Howard said. “We use it to facilitate camaraderie between everyone in the Geology program.”

Through the club, according to Howard, she has met several new friends who share her interests. Getting to work behind the scenes putting activities together has been an added bonus. “[It’s been a] really rewarding experience all around,” Howard said. “It makes me feel like I belong here at State.”

Another well-loved part about the club is the food opportunities it provides. Meetings are usually held at restaurants near

campus, according to Detelich.

“We try to keep the meeting part to a minimum and save lots of time for socializing,” Detelich said.

The organization emphasizes that one need not be studying geology to join Geology Club.

“We’re welcoming to all majors,” Detelich said. “We usually just talk about our love for the outdoors. There are no fees. It’s just an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the earth and to make really good friends.”

Howard encourages anyone interested in geology to join Geology Club.

“If you’re down to learn more about the planet, meet a bunch of really cool people and eat Mexican food, Geology Club is for you,” Howard said.

Downtown Raleigh offers several places for college students to spend a night out on the town on a reasonable budget. Driving down South Saunders Street provides a view of the skyline as you enter downtown.

At the beginning of each month, an event in downtown Raleigh known as First Friday takes place. As the name suggests, the event occurs to encourage people to support vendors in the downtown area on the first Friday of the month. Participating stores and galleries will open their doors to the public in the evening for the event and often have special promotions or discounts available.

The event, which is hosted by the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, has been going on longer than it has been a part of the alliance, but the alliance took it over a decade ago and began to market the event in 2006. First Friday is a part of the group’s storefront initiative to bring more customers into stores downtown.

The goal of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance is “advancing the downtown vitality for everyone,” according to Stacey Simone, the marketing director for the alliance.

“We promote the storefronts, and they are encouraged and supposed to have a promotion, such as a discount or something out of the ordinary to surprise

and delight their guests,” Simone said.

“A little programming goes a long way.”

During First Friday events, sections of downtown, primarily centered on Edenton Street and Salisbury Street, are closed off for through traffic in order to provide a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. Local artists display their work, and vendors set up pop-up tents to market their wares. As visitors peruse the event, they are able to watch and listen to live music played by local bands, such as the music group Earther, who played at the December 2018 First Friday event.

Not only is the event beneficial for visitors looking for something to do in the evening, it also helps to show people some of Raleigh’s local shops and venues. The storefronts are able to benefit from the additional foot traffic that comes from the event, and the vendors that come for the event benefit by having a place to set up shop. Multiple business owners have spoken on the beneficial impact of the event for their business.

“The program has grown and gained popularity as downtown has grown,” Simone said. “When we held this event ten years ago, it meant stores were actually open after five for the event, and

even the restaurants [that] would often close after lunch. The concept is the same as it was back then, but with more vendors and popularity, the event has gained traction.”

Dan Greyzck, owner of Ah Make Stuff, a vendor present, says that the event “gets better each time and is beneficial for marketing.” Greyzck has been marketing his wares at First Friday for roughly a year, but plans to continue to participate in future iterations of the event.

Some vendors use the event as a way to market outside of their online shops.

For online-based businesses, the event provides a convenient way to market and sell in-person to their clients and attract new ones to the business. Hygge Jewelry is an example of one of these businesses that utilizes the event by setting up a vendor tent.

The event can be a draw for college students to participate, since it is free to attend. First Friday is held on the first Friday of every month from 6-9 p.m. in downtown Raleigh. More about participating vendors and special events can be found at the First Friday Raleigh website.

The No. 21 NC State men’s basketball team will conclude its three-game road trip as they take on the No. 23 Louisville Cardinals. The Cardinals are currently on a three-game winning streak that started with a huge 21-point win over UNC-Chapel Hill.

Louisville (13-5, 4-1 ACC) has now collected two wins over ranked teams with the victory over UNC after defeating No. 9 Michigan State earlier in November. Forward Jordan Nwora has been hands down Louisville’s best player of late, averaging 18.5 points and over 8 rebounds per game.

“I think we have to play extremely highlevel basketball in order to win there,” head coach Kevin Keatts said. “[Louisville] is playing as good of basketball as anyone in their conference.”

The Cardinals are a different team than previous years with first-year head coach Chris Mack, a point Keatts also took note of. “[The] program has completely bought into their new coach and their system, very similar to us last year,” Keatts said.

The Pack (15-3, 3-2 ACC) is coming off of an important win over Notre Dame after a near-blowout loss to Wake Forest two games ago.

Redshirt junior guard C.J. Bryce went off for a season-high 23 points in that game as he helped propel the Wolfpack to a 77-73 win on a night that saw the rest of the team struggling to make shots. Bryce went 9 for 14 from the field and a perfect 5 for 5 from beyond the arc.

“I knew [3-point shooting] was an aspect I needed to add to my game for this team to be successful, and I’m willing to take those

shots,” Bryce said. “I can’t tell you the secret formula.”

Sophomore guard Braxton Beverly has been struggling with his shot as of late, putting up single-digit points in his past three games despite playing 30-plus minutes. He’s getting the touches with nearly 10 shots per game and NC State will be looking for him to step up his offense if they hope to win.

NC State has had different guys step up each game, but none have made as much of an impact as redshirt sophomore forward DJ Funderburk. Coming off the bench, Funderburk has given the Pack energy every game with his physicality and offensive rebounding, stepping into the vacant role of a true center.

“My teammates drive me,” Funderburk said, “We all just have a great bond and we all just try to come together and complete one goal at the end of every game.”

The Wolfpack is also waiting on the return of injured junior guard Markell Johnson.

Johnson has missed two games since sustaining an injury after a hard fall against Pitt in the first half. In those games, NC State has gone 1-1 in close matches against unranked opponents.

“He’s a guy that can play on Thursday or could play three or four weeks from now,” Keatts said on Johnson. “I’m not going to play him until, mentally and physically, he feels like he is ready to play.”

If Johnson is unavailable come Thursday, the Pack will lean on successful player rotations and balanced offense to give it the edge against a talented and hardworking Louisville team.

The No. 8 NC State wrestling team will begin its ACC schedule this Friday against Duke.

The Wolfpack (12-2) has competed in a challenging schedule so far in its 2018-19 season, facing five ranked teams. The Blue Devils (2-2), on the other hand, haven’t had much experience this season on a team-based level, but their individual wrestlers have gone up against talented opponents in multiple tournaments.

NC State redshirt sophomore Hayden Hidlay, ranked No. 3 at 157 pounds, has been one of the Pack’s most successful wrestlers, as he came off last season with All-American and ACC Champion honors. Hidlay has secured four major decisions this season, making his winning percentage 86.67 percent.

Another top competitor for the Wolfpack is redshirt sophomore Tariq Wilson, ranked No. 11 at 133 pounds, who boasts an 11-2 record this season. During last year’s NCAA Tournament, Wilson advanced to the semifinals before falling to the eventual national champion.

Redshirt senior Sean Fausz, ranked No. 19 at 125 pounds, has a winning percentage of 80 percent after his many wins and a major decision against Ohio State wrestler Hunter Lucas. Fausz has quite a rap sheet under his belt as an ACC Champion, three-time NCAA qualifier and three-time All-ACC. Duke has a secret weapon in two sets of

twins who have all posted remarkable records and takedowns for the season. Josh Finesilver and Matt Finesilver are both sophomores following in their older brothers’ footsteps, Mitch Finesilver and Zach Finesilver, who are redshirt seniors for the Blue Devils.

No. 6 Mitch Finesilver, at 149 pounds, has posted a 19-3 overall record for Duke’s 2019 season. The team captain is an NCAA qualifier, ACC runner-up and took victories at both the Hokie Open and Wolfpack Open last season.

Josh Finesilver, at 141 pounds, has made a name for himself with the Blue Devils, posting a 15-7 record as a sophomore. Josh has three major decisions this season against opponents from Pennsylvania, Harvard and a wrestler from NC State during the Hokie Open.

At 165 pounds, Zach Finesilver upholds a winning percentage of 73.33 percent, along with a bonus percentage of 40 percent. The NCAA qualifier and All-ACC wrestler placed second at the ACC Championships last season.

No. 13 Matt Finesilver boasts a 17-5 record at 174 pounds for the season. Matt has five major decision wins to add onto his record sheet, with a bonus percentage of 50 percent.

The sophomore ended the ACC Championships last year with a major decision win over Pittsburgh opponent, finishing 10-1.

The Wolfpack will host the Blue Devils this Friday inside Reynolds Coliseum at 7 p.m.

After a strong showing this past weekend at the Hokie Invitational, the NC State track and field team will continue its indoor season in Lubbock, Texas this weekend for the Texas Tech Classic.

The Wolfpack will be one of 21 teams competing at the meet with the strong field highlighted by Texas A&M, who finished in the top 10 in both men’s and women’s at last year’s NCAA Indoor Championships.

For NC State, this meet will be the fifth of 12 indoor meets this season leading up to the ACC and NCAA Championships.

The Wolfpack has already set five new indoor school records this campaign, the most recent coming in the women’s 4x100-meter relay last weekend at Virginia Tech.

Over the two-day event at the Hokie Invitational, the Wolfpack collected nine podium finishes and will look to carry that momentum into a meet with a stronger field in Lubbock.

An event to look out for will be the

women’s mile, which NC State is particularly strong in this year. At the Hokie Invitational, redshirt sophomore Dominique Clairmonte and junior Elly Henes both posted mile times in the 4:38 range, placing the Wolfpack duo both in the top-five times in the country this year.

Another strong event for NC State is the women’s 300-meter run, where senior Gabriele Cunningham and sophomore Jada Griffin have set the two fastest times in program history this season. Cunningham broke the school record in the Pack’s first meet of 2019, while Griffin posted the school’s second-best time at the Hokie Invitational.

In field events, redshirt senior Lauren Evans continued to be a star for NC State last week and will look to build on that again. She placed first in the women’s shot put at Virginia Tech, an event that she holds the school record in.

Now, the Wolfpack will get the opportunity to improve on its times and distances at a high-profile meet in Texas, featuring some very tough competition.

The meet will span from Friday to Saturday.

Pack gymnastics looks to keep rolling against UNC-Chapel Hill Tyler Stocum Staff Writer

The NC State gymnastics team will travel to Chapel Hill this Friday to take on rival UNC-Chapel Hill in a dual meet.

The Pack (4-1, 1-0 EAGL) are looking to build off of a dominant performance in its quad-meet victory last Friday. The Tar Heels (4-1, 1-0 EAGL) have also had a strong start to the season, with their only loss coming from the top-ranked Oklahoma team.

Both teams have posted similar average meet scores in the early season.

The Pack has an average season score of 194.425, and the Tar Heels have an average of 194.663. This shows in the rankings, where both teams are just outside

of the top-25 heading into the weekend.

Junior Drew Grantham has been the most dominant gymnast for the Pack this year. She collected her second consecutive EAGL Gymnast of the Week honor this week, while also taking her first all-around champion crown this past weekend.

Seniors Alexa Phillips and Paris Phillips have posted seven podium finishes out of 12 events thus far. In the meet this past weekend, the Phillips twins finished on the podium in vault and f loor.

The Pack posted team highs in three events at Towson in vault, bars and floor, so going into the UNC meet, the team will be riding high with confidence.

Also, look for the Wolfpack to have their best meet thus far this year, with it being a rivalry meet for the two teams.
