Raleigh community donates leave time, funds to Raleigh police officer After a Raleigh Police Officer Charles D. Ainsworth, an NC State alum, was shot and seriously wounded at a crime scene off of Western Boulevard last week, teachers and state employees have started to donate their time off to the wife of the officer, Jennifer Ainsworth, who is a teacher at Dillard Drive Middle School, so that she can help care for her husband. The Wake County school system is promising to grant the maximum leave allowable.

Colleagues at Dillard Drive began to donate their time to Ainsworth, and quickly the initiative was spread over social media. Other organizations, local companies and restaurants have announced fundraising events to help, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family.

Wake County schools make switch to eco-friendly trays The Wake County Public School System has officially made the switch from plastic foam trays to environmentally-friendly molded fiber trays.

The trays are made from recycled material and are compostable. The old trays the school system used were not biodegradable and usually could not be recycled because of the food remnants on the tray. The trays cost 6.1 cents, as opposed to the old foam trays that cost 3.5 cents, which is being paid for using the savings from the kitchen plastics and metal contract. While Wake County is not requiring that schools compost the trays, schools in the district may choose to do so independently.

After allegations of fraud prevented election results to be certified from North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, a hearing has been set with a Superior Court judge per a lawsuit filed by Republican candidate Mark Harris. While the State Board of Elections is still investigating the potential fraud in the election between Harris and Democratic candidate Dan McCready, Harris filed a lawsuit that would force the board to solidify the election results in November. The board attempted to hold an evidentiary hearing on Jan. 11, but after a court ruling in December, the board had to be dissolved and is now made up of professional staff. Harris’s campaign argued that the board has had enough time to investigate the election, and now 700,000 citizens are left without a representative.

The date has been set for Jan. 22.

Long-overdue Greek Village renovation project estimated to cost $17 million Boz Kaloyanov Assistant News Editor

In an effort to better fulfill the needs of the fraternity and sorority community on NC State’s campus, the university has engaged in a massive housing construction project to complete Greek Village.

While the project began over 10 years ago, completion is not near. Shelly Brown Dobek, director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, has been working on it since its inception. While NC State has had Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) housing on campus since the early 1960s, over the years those options became less viable, according to Brown Dobek.

“Lots of things have changed, buildingwise from the 60s,” Brown Dobek said. “Fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, just think of when they built rooms, there might’ve been one outlet in a room, and think of all the things that students bring today that they plug in.”

Renovating the existing buildings was expensive, taking an estimated $1 million dollars for every building, according to Brown Dobek, so a complete revamp seemed like a more viable option.

“The roads were in a place where they would need to be redone, the sewer systems were in a place where they would need to be redone,” Brown Dobek said. “It makes sense to start over, versus to try to piece around it.”

Brown Dobek explained that lots will be “ground leased” out to individual FSL orga-

nizations, effectively giving control to the tenant over construction, operations and expenses for that piece of land.

“The organizations then design, operate, own their own buildings,” Brown Dobek said. “So they are responsible then for what it looks like, how do they furnish it.”

Joshua Welch, associate director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, further clarified that costs for houses are not the university’s responsibility.

“The houses themselves that are built on university land are funded by solely the organizations,” Welch said. “So, the Kappa Delta house, for example, that was built solely with Kappa Delta fundraising.”

Brown Dobek emphasized that there was a big focus on making the village inclusive with the redesign. While traditional Greek village houses exist, there are also plans to build a set of townhouses and apartments.

The former would house smaller organizations, while the latter could house a mix of people from different chapters.

On a project of this scale, Brown Dobek explained that cost is a major point of consideration. She mentioned that there has been roughly a cost escalation of 25 percent, compared to initial estimates.

“One of the things that I think is challenging is that, again, this project was developed many, many years ago, and so was the pricing,” Brown Dobek said. “As the time has moved way beyond anticipated, we’re having to go back and look at what it costs to do each

of the phases. So the initial idea of cost in 2008 was very different than 2019 dollars.”

Because the organizations themselves are responsible for construction and design costs of their individual houses, NC State mainly has to focus on infrastructure costs, and even those are split roughly in the middle with the FSL organizations, Brown Dobek explained.

“Those costs are split between the organizations and the university,” Brown Dobek said. “The idea is across the entire project, not phase by phase, because otherwise, your smaller phases would have a very difficult time coming up with that kind of cash.”

In total, infrastructure costs are around $28.7 million, with about $17 million coming from NC State, according to Brown Do-

bek. The entire project is estimated to cost around $149 million.

Welch explained that the money contributed by the university can come from a variety of ways.

“The rents that are collected from university-owned properties are a source of funding for that,” Welch said. “There’s opportunities for us as a department to do some borrowing from the university.”

While the project was initially intended to be completed before the end of the decade, it is projected to be done around 2026. Brown Dobek said she is enthusiastic about the future of the village.

“I’ve worked on this project for a really long time, and I’m excited to see it moving forward,” Brown Dobek said.

Senate committees prepare legislation, focus on advocacy Rachael Davis

Since April of 2018, the Student Senate has proposed and written over 40 resolutions because of the work from its students who are a part of the numerous Senate Committees.

These Senate committees focus on specific areas of student concern.

According to the Student Government website, there are two types of committees: standing and permanent.

Technician sat down with Amy Clemmons, a College of Humanities and Social Sciences Senator, University Affairs chairperson and a second-year student majoring in political science and sociology, to discuss and go further indepth about the eight active Senate committees.

Standing Committees

According to NC State Student Government Student Body Documents, standing committees are responsible for looking over and considering every question or legislation the Senate or President hands over. These committees also prepare legislation they deem necessary for the welfare of the Student Body or as directed by the Senate.

Academics This committee is responsible for policies regarding academic reform, university academic policy and the evaluation of professorships and courses. In addition, the committee deals with issues regarding the university calendar and Health & Exercise Studies, according to the Student Body Documents.

Don’t overlook them: campus blue lights provide convenience, safety Lauren Greene Correspondent

Blue light emergency phone stations scattered across NC State’s campus work to provide a safe and discreet way for individuals to contact a campus police officer in the case of an emergency.

Major Ian Kendrick, support service commander of the NC State University Police Department, discussed how the blue light emergency system works and how it provides assistance to individuals on NC State’s campus.

“Blue lights has an integrated phone in it,” Kendrick said. “On the face of the blue lights across campus, there is a red button.

Press the button, and it rings directly into our communication center at the police department. It comes in just like a 911 call would from a phone. The telecommunica-

mittee proposed the Examination Books Act, which encourages students to utilize Green Books for exams in order to be more environmentally friendly.

The committee also proposed the Academic Calendar Communications Act in September of 2018, which stated that students should be updated of major changes to the Academic Calendar in a more frequent and detailed manner.

However, in November of 2018, Student Body President Jess Errico, vetoed the resolution.

Finance According to the Student Body Documents, the Committee on Finance is responsible for the expenditure of student body funds. The committee focuses on reviewing finance bills, advising the Student Body Treasurer and other positions on spending and inspecting budgets and expenses of departments. In addition, the committee also reviews the annual student body budget proposal.

However, according to Clemmons, Finance also allocates money to all of NC State’s student organizations.

“Different student organizations can request money through finance and set up a meeting with them to explain why they need money and how they will use it,” Clemmons said. “The Finance Committee will then request money for the student organizations through the treasurer’s office.”

“A bulk of them are going to be those service-related calls, key requests or getting into a building because someone has locked their phone in there,” Kendrick said. “A couple calls have been medical assist. Some people have actually reported crimes like a hit and run. We have some motorist assist, where someone needed help unlocking their car or jump-starting their car.”

Kendrick explained that the blue lights provide safety to those who are new to campus or guests visiting the university.

Government Relations and Oversight This committee, also known as GRO, is in charge of reviewing amendments to student body statutes and the constitution, creating election procedures and considering amendments to the rules of Senate, according to the Student Body Documents.

Clemmons stated that this committee mainly focuses on the rules of the Senate, making the focus internal.

GRO’s focal point is on how [the Senate] operates,” Clemmons said. “So, how we should behave during Senate meetings, and or how we should address the Senate president. There is a lot of legislation that goes through this committee, because Senate is always working to change statutes.”

In November of 2018, GRO’s Chair Act was passed, which legislates the NC State University Student Senate to amend all uses of the words “chairman” and “chairperson” in Student Body Statutes to be replaced with “chair,” in order to use more inclusive language.

Student Relations According to the Student Body Documents, the Committee on Student Relations is responsible for addressing issues of diversity concern, policies dealing with University Housing, Student Media, Inter-Residence Council, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Union Activities Board, and Student Involvement and Athletics.

Clemmons said that this committee deals with issues that affect students directly. For example, most recently, this committee presented

the Title IX Protections Act, which states that the Student Government of NC State supports students who have experienced sexual assault and harassment, and they object to the Department of Education’s proposed Title IX regulations.

University Affairs Clemmons states that this committee focuses on the administration side of the university, unlike the Student Relations Committee, which focuses on the student side of the university.

“We work with NC State transportation, University Dining, the NC State Bookstores and basically every facility on campus,” Clemmons said. “We work to have an open dialogue with all of these facilities. We let them know what students want and how they can adapt to meet student needs.”

The most recent legislation this committee has passed is the Fossil Fuel Industry Act. The resolution encourages the university to reinvest funds from NC State’s endowment fund into more socially and environmentally friendly avenues, like renewable energy.

Permanent Committees Permanent committees differ from standing committees, because unlike standing committees, each permanent committee has at least one specific job or objective that must be completed in each legislative session, according to the Student Body Documents.

Appropriations This committee is a very important aspect of what Student Government does, because the committee ensures a fair distribution of Student Body Funds to registered student organizations, according to Student Body Documents.

According to the appropriations website, Stu-

dent Government appropriations occur twice every year. The Appropriations Packet releases in on Jan. 22 and the application closes on Feb. 4.

This committee has not proposed or passed any legislation this senate session.

Tuition and Fees According to Clemmons, this committee focuses on student tuition, fees and other monetary charges. They also annually review all proposed student fee increases.

“Luckily, State did not have any fee increases this year for the Committee on Tuition and Fees to look over,” Clemmons said. “However, we did have a fee increase a few years ago on Carmichael Gym. For something like this, Student Government would either give our stamp of approval or reject the fee increases.”

This committee has not proposed or passed any legislation this senate session.

Committee for Onboarding and Leadership Development (COLD) According to the Student Body Documents, this committee ensures advocacy and training for all members of the Student Senate.

Those on this committee are also responsible for leadership development initiatives.

Clemmons stated that COLD plans all Senaterelated activities, including the Student Government retreat, and helps to educate new Senators on the Senate structure and procedures. In addition, COLD also reviews all appointments made to the Student Senate.

Recently, COLD approved the appointments of Lilly Neal to the office of chair of the Board of Elections for the spring semester and Taylor Pulliam to the office of communications director of Student Government for the 98th session of Student Government.

Errico’s executive cabinet: explained Alicia Thomas News Editor

The Executive Cabinet is in charge of acting as a liaison between Student Government and many different entities on campus.

Student Body President Jess Errico, a fifthyear studying mechanical engineering, meets with the Cabinet every week on Wednesdays from 6-7:15 p.m. and receives weekly and biweekly updates from the departments, while the Chief of Staff and Student Body Vice President oversee the day-to-day tasks of cabinet members.

Director of Athletics: Daniel Mock, a fourthyear studying computer engineering, typically manages the parking pass distribution for football games and loyalty point appeals, and focuses additionally on concerns students may have with Club and Intramural Sports.

“They liaise with Athletics with anything that students want to see look differently,” Errico said. “Any time students want to affect change on anything Athletics-related, the Student Athletics Director typically is somebody who’s part of that conversation each year.”

Director of Communications: Taylor Pulliam, a fourth-year studying political science, and the department focus on external-facing communication to inform the student body about different executive branch initiatives. According to Errico, they focus on graphics and media creation, including videos, and manage their social media accounts.

“They are in charge of not only creating things to face outwards, but also being creative and brainstorming what else we could be doing to one reach students to gather concerns, but two, share updates and things that are different,” Errico said. “We can change things, all that we want in response to student needs, but if they don’t know that they’re different, then it doesn’t really serve them good.”

“Even if someone does not know where they are, for example if you have a guest here at NC State and it is their first time here on campus, they are passing through and they need assistance, but they do not know where they are,” Kendrick said, “they hit that blue light, and it actually pops up on the screen and shows exactly where the activation is.”

According to Kendrick, the blue lights are not used as much as they were in the past. More reports are made through a cell phone than a blue light. Because of the increased use of cell phones to report crimes, campus police has not seen a need to in-

“They plan each year, typically, Respect the Pack, which is a kickstarter community expectations celebration of inclusion and equity at State, but also a reminder of what our standards are and what our community expectations are,” Errico said.

Director of Government Relations: This year, the government relations director, Andrew McDonald, a fourth-year studying aerospace engineering, co-chaired Pack the Polls and worked closely with Errico to advocate for an early voting site to come to campus, and also helped build student voter turnout.

“They also go on to do a lot of helping to understand the implications of things that are happening in government and how it might implicate and impact the students on campus,” Errico said.

Director of Graduate Student Relations: A dual position, the director of graduate student relations serves as a liaison between Student Government, undergraduates and the Graduate Student Association. The director, who is currently Mike Madden, a graduate student studying marine, earth and atmospheric sciences, attends GSA meetings, works to maintain direct lines of communication between graduate and undergraduate students and looks for anything that will positively impact graduate students.

“They work on all things grad-related,” Errico said. “Right now, that includes helping in the efforts to better understand what the mental health of our graduate students looks like through putting out surveys, and they’re working on a graduate student town hall.”

Director of Sustainability: According to

Errico, the director of sustainability acts as a facilitator of conversations of eco-friendly initiatives on campus. The current director is Jimmy Donovan, a fourth-year studying chemical engineering.

“It attracts leadership from other organizations on campus whose themes include sustainability and provides a space for them to collaborate and work together, and to ensure that they’re not working on the same initiatives and they’re using their resources the best they can,” Errico said.

Director of Traditions: Abby Verchick, a fourth-year studying biological sciences and sports science, is in charge of working with The Brick app, which tracks the various Traditions students have completed. Additionally, the department manages Campout and the Last Lecture Series and keeps track of medals that recognize students who have completed the Traditions.

Director of University Affairs: Alex Obiol, a third-year studying textile engineering, advocates for changes Student Government would like to see, such as working with NC State Dining for more vegetarian and vegan options and other campus partners.

“They do a lot of collaboration with other departments that doesn’t necessarily fit in to the other executive departments,” Errico said.

Director of Student Wellness: The Student Wellness department was created through an executive order issued by Errico at the beginning of the academic year. The department director is Mitchell Morovec, a graduate student studying public administration. According to Errico, the responsibilities of that position include being a liaison to Student Health, Wellness and Recreation, University Dining and other campus groups that impact student wellness on campus and making sure Student Government is advocating to promote holistic student wellness.

gates: The ASG Delegate and alternate delegate, Naila Segule, a third-year studying biomedical engineering and self-design international health development, and Jake Petrillo, a second-year studying international studies and accounting, manage Student Government’s relationship with the Association of Student Governments (ASG). They do this through writing and advocating for legislation, as well as budgetary management of student requests for funding through ASG. Executive Assistant: Isabelle Babson, a fourth-year studying psychology and sociology, works to do background research on executive orders that are issued and provides research support to other department members. Babson is also in charge of administrative support, taking meeting notes and managing attendance documents, and is a key figure in the Student Organization Roundtable meetings.

Chief of Staff: The current Chief of Staff, Ryan Dunn, a third-year studying political science, is in charge of advising a portion of the departments, making sure programs and initiatives are running smoothly. Additionally, a large part of the role is making sure every department is focused on accountability to Errico’s platform.

“Double-checking that progress is being made on platform and helping brainstorm ways we can keep moving in those areas,” Errico said.

Errico said that the directors are critical in the advancement of the executive branch, because they are able to be representatives in different aspects of the campus community.

“We have this platform that we told students that we would work on and be working to accomplish in office, and that’s what we were elected on,” Errico said. “Through these directors each helping carry that load, we’re able to one, better meet the needs of students and two, it opens the door to have other conversations as they arise, as well.”

“These days, we do not see a lot of people using them,” Kendrick said, “Primarily because there are other means of communication such as cell phones and text, but they are used periodically. Last year we had 52 legitimate uses of the button, and by that I mean people who need some sort of assistance.”

Kendrick mentioned that blue lights are continuously being tested, even if they are not being used.

“We are actually physically looking at the devices themselves,” Kendrick said.

“Pressing the buttons and accessing if it is actually working, or if the audio quality is not what it should be, or if it’s not ringing in. We want to make sure that the blue lights across campus are actually functioning, so if people need them they

are able to.”

Will Steinbercher, emergency phone line technician, explained how each blue light is individually tested.

“I use my cell phone to test them that way,” Steinbercher said. “If it acts funny, I will go ahead and push the button. A lot of times, we do not know why, but when you push the button it will give you a digital sound, like when you put two speakers together, and it makes that funny noise referred to as ‘feedback.’ It happens a lot.”

Steinbercher mentioned that the Communication Technologies department in the Office of Information Technology works with the police department to run tests decreasing the chance of overlooking a broken blue light.

“Usually what happens is that at the end of the month, they get more than one offi-

cer involved,” Steinbercher said. “They give them a list of blue lights to be tested, and they will start on one end of the campus.

The officers might start on Centennial one month and old campus another month. I always try to start opposite of where they do. We double-check each other this way.”

Matthew Castle, communication analyst, expressed that NC State blue lights are continuously monitored.

“There is always someone on call in case there is an issue with the blue light, even if it is two o’clock in the morning,” Castle said. “We will receive a message from campus police of any problems they are having. Once that person who is on call gets a notification and files a report, the next morning we will go over those reports, and that’s how we know which one to go to outside of the regular testing.”

Raleigh shouldn’t needlessly kill their scooters TAXES AND FEES PREVENT COMPANIES FROM OFFERING A COST-EFFECTIVE SERVICE A couple months ago, the Raleigh area awoke to a major surprise in the downtown streets. A bunch of new, not lime-colored electric scooters appeared out of thin air on street corners, Colin and city officials were not McKnight Staff Columnist ecstatic about them. Arguments were had, the idea of a temporary ban like the one in Asheville was thrown around, but ultimately the scooters were given the green light.

Now jump to this week, with Bird being forced to raise ride prices by $2 to compensate for an annual $300-per-scooter fee, an imposed limit of 500 scooters that the company can deploy in the city, and specific allowed times and locations for rides.

Mayor Nancy McFarlane told City Council that Bird’s ride price raise has nothing to do with their newly-implemented fees and that it is a “business profit-making decision” on their part. That’s a pretty unfair assessment, however, when you consider that these fees are some of the highest ever seen for scooter companies across the country.

She tried to point at Indianapolis’ massive licensing fee as justification for the fees, but Raleigh should aim to lead the pack, not follow it.

Per Raleigh’s own Transportation Director Michael Moore, most cities charge at most $100 per scooter, with $130 as the extreme.

No one wins anything in our current scenario. Bird, Lime and the other companies struggle to gain a foothold in the local area, and Raleigh jeopardizes an entire industry presence in the city for no reason.

Another fear of mine – besides the basic

one of electric scooters never finding stable footing in Raleigh – is the possibility of an accidental monopolization by one company or another. At the time of writing this column, Lime, who has already had plenty of their own bikes and scooters, has not yet announced a price hike. While they are still affected by the same fees and restrictions, their existing presence in the area might hinder healthy competition.

I understand that they’re new and complex, but overall, scooters are a positive thing for the area. They’re convenient, they’re trendy and they’re affordable, when they’re actually allowed to be. The arguments for how safe they truly are in the hands of the average American don’t go unheard. They’re still vehicles, and I do strongly urge that users follow the proper rules and regulations needed to limit any mishaps. Unnecessary fees, however, my wallet and I can do without.

As I stated in a previous column, Bird did make a misstep in its implementation through a supposed lack of communication with city officials. But despite some past errors, electric scooters should still get a chance in the Research Triangle. It’s clear there are some problems on both ends of this relationship, but one olive branch from either side could bring this whole pointless fight to a close.

I hope that Raleigh reverses its decision, and soon. I want both Bird and Lime to get an equal shot at taking over the downtown streets, and I want the competition that comes out of it to be a boon to the city. Electric scooters bring a cheap, modern form of transportation for the area, and right now, Raleigh is sending a message that this industry is not welcome to town.

Every Wednesday I have to search the news to try and find current issues that I could write my weekly opinion column about.

Within my regular routine, Zack Jenio I often visit The News & Observer to find local stories Staff Columnist that could affect NC State students. I stumbled upon one of the main stories on the front page which explained that two single North Carolina women, a Meredith college alum and the 2018 Miss North Carolina USA, would appear as contestants on this season of The Bachelor.

As gravely important as it sounds, I couldn’t really see a good column coming from that story. Yet, below the headline in a much smaller thumbnail was a headline about a death penalty case being pursued in Wake County. After regaining my composu re f rom the abrupt whiplash from topic to topic, I was appalled by the fact that this important story was being overlooked by Colton Underwood’s love life.

Herein lies a problem within the media that affects us, even if we do not recognize it. The news presents stories that they feel will get the most reads, though they might not be as pertinent or important. If we just accept the big headlines, whether it be about pop culture drama or reality TV spoilers, then we won’t be aware and cognizant of our world and its effects on us.

Many young adults today gather their news from online websites and social media.

Moreover, those that aren’t seeking news (i.e., going online to read the news) are more likely to find it on social media feeds as compared to specific news websites. Finally, a quarter of social media news consumers will click a news link to stories when it appears on their feed.

Now what does young people getting news from social media have to do with The

Bachelor? Well, as the statistics point out, many young people are passively clicking on articles that appear on their feed. As a result, we’re letting news happen to us. The only news we’re getting is news that appears before us, so if all we see is Bachelor-related content then all we’ll know is Bachelor-related information.

Students should not be content with letting news stories fall into the palm of our hand, but should actively try to search out news in order to know what’s affecting us in our world today. I realize that actively reading the news, especially in today’s hectic world, can be overwhelming, while Keeping Up with the Kardashians can be a breath of fresh air. However, life is full of heavy information and that doesn’t give you an excuse not to be aware of the world’s political, economic and social climate.

That being said, it isn’t the end of the world to keep up with pop culture through social media (it would be hypocritical of me to condemn doing so), but we need to supplement it with real news that you actively try to read.

Students need a news source that supplies them with information about current events that affect the entire nation.

One resource I’ve found helpful is The Daily Skimm, which provides international news daily by email in a digestible format and also includes some pop-culture updates.

However, there are a number of similar services, and students should look around to see what services and news sources they find most valuable.

Although there’s no way to change how the media presents news to us, we can change what news we read. By actively searching for real news we become more knowledgeable about the world around us and how headlines in the news affect us personally.

So, in between commercial breaks or before the final rose ceremony, try to read some “real” news, too.

Undefeated Wolfpack to host Virginia Tech Emma Sheppard Correspondent

As the No. 8 NC State women’s basketball team comes off of a win against Virginia, the undefeated Pack will take on Virginia Tech in Reynolds Coliseum Sunday.

The Wolfpack (17-0, 4-0 ACC) dominated Virginia with a 28-point win this past Sunday. The Pack was led by junior forward Erika Cassell, who played 23 minutes and scored 15 points. Closely following Cassell was graduate guard Kiara Leslie who scored 12 points in 32 minutes.

Seeking its 18th win in a row, the Pack

will play the unranked Hokies (13-3, 0-3 ACC) who just recently dropped a game to Virginia. The Hokies were led by Taylor Emery who scored 26 points against the Cavaliers.

While it looks promising for the Wolfpack, this will not be an easy win; the Hokies were undefeated up until conference play this year. Each of their three losses have been significantly close and a loss against a ranked Syracuse team went to overtime.

The Wolfpack will need to continue working together as a team and looking to Cassell and Leslie to put points on the board. Tipoff against Virginia Tech is 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The No. 17 NC State men’s basketball team is preparing to play its second of three straight road games after being defeated by ACC competitor Wake Forest Tuesday night. The Wolfpack will go up to South Bend, Indiana to take on Notre Dame Saturday.

NC State (14-3, 2-2 ACC) will enter this matchup with a strong record, unlike the Fighting Irish (11-6, 1-3 ACC), who have struggled this season after losing high scorers Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell.

The NC State gymnastics team will be competing in a quad meet this Friday at 7 p.m. in Towson, Maryland.

The Wolfpack will be competing against Cornell, William & Mary and Towson.

Towson will be the Pack ’s first EAGL m at c hup of t he season. The Pack improved from its scores from its first meet to its last meet against Ohio State a nd w i l l look to build on that progression again.

The Pack is in a good place to take on its next three competitors as Towson and Cornell have top scores that are slightly above 190.000. The Pack has scored higher than that in both its meets with scores of 193.750 and 194.925.

Last season, the Wolfpack participated in the Towson Meet against Towson, Cornell, William & Mary and West Virginia.

The Pack came in second place with a finishing score of 196.550. The team fell short to West Virginia, who scored 196.775, only a 0.225 difference.

At the Towson meet, junior Drew

Grantham placed fifth all-around with a score of 38.800. Grantham also tied for fourth on the beams with a score of 9.875, the highest scorer from NC State.

Senior Alexa Phillips tied for fifth on the vault, scoring 9.825. Both Phillips and Grantham tied for fourth place on the f loor at 9.875 points.

Comparing last year’s Towson Meet to the Pack’s most recent meet, t he team’s scores for e a c h e v e nt a r e s l i g ht l y lowe r.

However, last year’s Towson Meet was towards the end of the Pack ’s season in March while the Pack ha s ba rely begun its current season and is doing well in its improvements to reach the scores it did last year.

Last year at Towson, the Pack’s lowest team score was on the vault at 48.925.

The bars, beams and f loor all had scores over 49.000.

The Pack’s current scores are reaching for 49.000 but aren’t quite there. The Pack is in a good position to defeat its three opponents in this meet but more importantly, it’s another opportunity for the Pack to better its own personal scores.

impressive game of the season in his fight against UNC-Chapel Hill with 16 points and 19 rebounds.

For the Wolfpack, redshirt senior guard Torin Dorn and redshirt junior guard C.J. Bryce have proven themselves to be the most vital offensive and defensive players to the team’s success, each with at least a 33 percent field-goal percentage.

Marking this his third season in an NC State uniform, Dorn has shone through his performance in every game, becoming one of the Wolfpack ’s top scorers within the paint. Dorn has posted four

Takeaways from NC State men’s basketball through four ACC games Covey Hough Correspondent

NC State men’s basketball has had a successful season so far, despite tough losses to Wisconsin, No. 12 UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest. The Pack is still in a great position as ACC play begins to heat up. The team is 14-3 overall and 2-2 in conference games and is No. 17 in the country. Here are some takeaways from the season so far: This year’s team has improved significantly from last season At this time last year, NC State was 12-6 overall and 2-3 in ACC play. It did upset Duke and Arizona, but it also suffered inexplicable losses to Northern Iowa and UNCGreensboro. The first two ACC games NC State played resulted in blowouts by Clemson and Notre Dame. NC State could beat good teams, but it would also lay massive eggs against mediocre ones.

This year, the Pack has only lost three games, all of which were competitive games, and two of them were against teams that have appeared in the top-25 rankings. The team ripped through the early part of its schedule, winning its first five games with an average margin of victory of 38.8 points. It dropped a road game to Wisconsin, but was able to convincingly win against the lesser teams on the schedule.

In conference play, the Pack has started off strong by beating Miami and Pitt. The losses to No. 12 UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest were let-downs, however they were both competitive games despite NC State clearly not playing its best basketball and digging itself into early holes. Despite the recent losses, NC State has shown that it is a threat in the ACC this year, although winning it will be very tough due to having to compete with No. 1 Duke and No. 4 Virginia.

Markell Johnson, DJ Funderburk have stood out One of the biggest factors for NC State’s success has been the emergence of junior guard Markell Johnson. Johnson has averaged 11.6 points per game and 4.1 assists despite only playing 21.3 minutes on average. His presence on the court is a boost to the whole team, and the recent loss to Wake Forest, where he didn’t play due to a hip injury sustained against Pitt, underlines his value to the team. When he gets hot, he can take over a game; when he’s not, he can still keep the offense running with his smart ball-movement ability.

Club flag football off the ground and running CLUB FLAG FOOTBALL IS COMING TO NC STATE.

Kicking off its inaugural season in the spring 2019 semester, the team will have its first interest meeting next Tuesday and will be holding tryouts, likely around the middle of February, according to club President Daniel Lee, a second-year studying neurobiology.

Per NC State Club Sports regulations, the team will have to maintain good standing, meet regularly and compete, among other requirements, for at least two years before being recognized as an official club sport.

The team, which was organized and created by Lee is open to any and all undergraduate students at NC State. Based on positive feedback received so far, Lee plans on having a men’s and a co-ed team.

“We’re open to anybody and everybody,” Lee said. “If there are enough women to do a women’s team that would be fantastic.”

Ideally, Lee wants between 20 and 30 competitive players, enough to form two teams with the expectation of winning.

NC State will be joining N.C. A&T, UNC-Pembroke, UNC-Wilmington and Campbell as North Carolina schools with club flag football teams.

“There is going to be great competition we can look forward to,” Lee said.

Commitment to the team is not to be confused with that of intramural f lag football. According to Lee, all meetings, fundraising events, practices and games are mandatory, and a two- to four-hour weekly time commitment is to be expected.

The team will practice weekly in order to prepare for upcoming tournaments and stand-alone games.

During this inaugural season, Lee’s goals for the team are simple.

“The goals for this semester are to play a few games and possibly a national tournament,” Lee said. “The spring will be gauging our talent and seeing what we really have.”

If everything goes smoothly in this first season, Lee plans on registering the team for local, regional and national tournaments in the future, and any leagues under the American Flag Football League

(AFFL) umbrella.

While there is no set date for tryouts, it will likely be a two-day affair, with the first day consisting of skills assessments and positional tryouts and the second day being a series of scrimmages.

“Our goal is to get 50 people at tryouts,” Lee said.

Lee, who has experience as a referee for NC State intramural flag football and regional AFFL tournaments, knows there are more than enough athletes at NC State

to form a competitive team.

“I’ve seen a lot of good talent,” Lee said.

“I know there are a lot of good players out there.”

Club flag football has yet to take off in North Carolina, but Lee is hoping that adding another competitive team to the mix will help continue to grow the sport.

“There aren’t a ton of good flag football teams around,” Lee said. “But within the next few years hopefully it will continue to grow some more.”
