OIED Centers The Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity has four centers around campus that cater to the physical, mental and emotional needs of marginalized groups on campus.

The GLBT Center, Women’s Center and Multicultural Student Affairs Center are all located in Talley Student Union and the African American Cultural Center (AACC) is on the third floor of Witherspoon Student Center.

According to Adrienne Davis, the interim senior director for Campus Community Centers and associate director of the Bias Impact Response Team, the centers shifted away from in-person community building due to COVID-19, but have moved to focus more heavily on student support, survivor support and crisis support. The AACC will be able to allow five students at a time, and the three centers in Talley will be able to allow up to four students in each center at a time.

Davis said “this will very much redefine what the firstyear experience is,” but wants incoming first-years to know the centers are “willing to take the extra steps necessary for them to know that they are welcome here.” Davis said she doesn’t feel this transition will be more difficult for returning students than first-years.

Davis asks that first-year students be open and communicate with the centers in order to share what they need, so administrators can look at how best to support the community. According to Davis, students need to be aware that there is a possibility the centers could be required to return to all virtual or more limited hours. This is partially due to the fact that cleaning supplies are in high demand, and the centers do not have enough to effectively clean and sanitize their spaces in between visits for an extended period of time.

The centers plan to partner with the Counseling Center to facilitate a heavy focus on student mental health through regular check-ins and specific programming around recovery and mental health.

Talley Talley Student Union is a hub of campus cultural activity and is one of the main gathering places for students.

However, in the age of COVID-19, much of that has had to change.

According to Tim Hogan, the director of Student Centers, there will be around 50% less seating area for students throughout the building to promote social distancing and a reduced capacity for meeting spaces. Hogan anticipates these changes will reduce the population entering Talley on a daily basis by 40-50%.

Because of this reduction in capacity, students looking for on-campus jobs this fall may want to have a backup plan if they plan to apply for a position in Talley. According to Hogan, there will be a reduction in the number of student staff hired in the building. However, all students who had a job when they left campus will be able to return to their job. Hogan said he hopes all students will follow the guidelines to protect themselves and the rest of the students, faculty and staff on campus.

Libraries For many students returning to campus, NC State’s libraries act as an essential resource, allowing students

free, reliable internet, while linking them with resources like laptops, chargers and machines in the makerspaces.

As NC State University Libraries prepare for student’s return to campus, Greg Raschke, senior vice provost and director of libraries, said while things might look a little different, the libraries are still committed to offering these services to students.

In order to accommodate for an adequate deep clean in the evening, the libraries are operating under reduced hours. Beginning Aug. 10, both D.H. Hill Jr. Library and James B. Hunt Jr. Library will operate between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Fridays, 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

In addition to cleaning overnight, the libraries will be cleaning during the day and are providing alcohol wipes for students to use when they leave or enter an area, according to Raschke.

While in the past a lot of the library spaces were designed to bring students together, those spaces have been modified this semester to keep students apart and promote social distancing, according to Raschke. Areas which would have previously facilitated upwards of four individuals will now be limited to accommodate one or two students.

In other areas, plexiglass has been put up to provide a physical barrier between students.

Much like the system adopted last semester, students who need laptops for this semester will be able to check them out for the whole semester and return them before leaving campus for break, as opposed to only renting them for a few hours at a time.

In an attempt to monitor both libraries’ capacity, the libraries will have door sensors as well as sensors placed around the library to monitor how crowded different spaces are. These numbers will be observed hourly to allow for adjustments if needed.

That being said, Raschke anticipates the libraries will be able to accommodate approximately 1,000 students in Hill and 800 in Hunt, if students are spread out. If, for some reason, crowding becomes an issue, Raschke said the libraries would consider moving to an online reservation system.

Despite the challenges brought to the fall semester by COVID-19, there are a plethora of organizations and activities for incoming students to join. Student Government (SG), one of the most prominent organizations on campus, is finding new ways to interact with the student body.

According to Student Body President Melanie Flowers, a fourth-year studying communication with a concentration in public relations, SG is an on-campus organization meant to advocate for student needs. SG also serves to represent the student body for university administration, the UNC Board of Trustees and the greater state.

“One of the ways we represent students is through our Senate meetings, where we have senators representing

each of the colleges, the grad school, as well as first-year students, and they’ll pass legislation to take a stance on a particular concern,” Flowers said.

Both incoming and current students can get involved with SG. Fall applications are open for first-year students interested in getting involved, according to Flowers and Simpson. Interest forms are available for vacant Senate seats and there is also a general application interest form for students to get involved on their website. Students can also contact student legislators through their respective office emails.

“When I was getting involved on campus when I came as a transfer student, I got involved in the diversity and outreach department, not as a senator but as a student, and that was a great way for me to dip my toes into the water to see what SG was like with a smaller responsibil-

Meal prep: Here are your on-campus options Caitlyn Mahoney Correspondent

NC State Dining has been working over the summer to create systems and implement procedures to maintain social distancing in dining spaces and optimize students’ dining experiences this fall, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shawn Hoch, senior director of dining and hospitality services, and Jennifer Gilmore, director of marketing and communications, have both been a part of the effort to make changes to dining at NC State.

Dining Locations NC State will have three fully-operational dining halls this fall: Fountain, Clark and Case.

Fountain and Clark are set to open on July 31. Case will open on Aug. 10. All three dining locations will operate on a streamlined menu, offering the most popular items in each dining hall among students. Case and Fountain will have a home-plus model of dining, allowing students to get a simple, homestyle meal from the homestyle station along with an additional meal from another station, such as stir-fry or grill.

Each dining hall location will have dine-in,

take out and mobile ordering systems.

Dining-In Typically, a student has the option to dine in at one of the three dining hall locations on campus whenever they want. The dine-in experience for students will be slightly different this fall due to Wake County’s COVID-19 regulations.

Currently, all dining locations at NC State are at 50% capacity and only 10 people are allowed to eat at a table at a time. Hoch highly encourages students to sit with pods of friends, suitemates or cohorts in order to reduce the possibility of transmitting COVID-19.

The restrictions mean students are not guaranteed the ability to dinein in the fall.

“If dining in is important to them, then don’t go at peak hours—between 6:00-7:30 p.m.— and also avoid crowds,” Hoch said. “We also have available outdoor tent space for additional seating.”

Outdoor tents with and without tables are strategically positioned around campus in order to provide additional seating for dining out, studying and other activities. A student can find the location of these tents by referring to the quick reference guide to dining. The guides

were emailed out to students and will be passed out at the Wolfpack One Card distribution station in Talley Student Union and other points around campus.

Takeout The first time a student asks for takeout, the cashier will give them one free takeout container. Once the student gets their container, they will be able to fill it up as much as they want. They will also have the ability to select prepackaged goods and a beverage without an additional charge.

The next time a student enters the dining hall, they will give the container back to the cashier and receive a clean container or a placeholder carabiner in return. The current carabiner system is replacing the token system used in the past and functions as a way to alert cashiers if a student has returned their one free container and is eligible for another one.

If a student loses their one free container or the carabiner or forgets to bring either one to the dining hall with them the next time they try to get takeout, they will be charged $2.50— the price of a new container.

Grubhub Mobile Ordering

Another change to the dining system for the fall is the addition of the mobile ordering system, Grubhub, to almost all dining locations on campus.

The purpose of ordering ahead is to decrease the volume of students in buildings. Grubhub is completely free for students if they use the app’s pickup feature. The pickup feature acts as a notification system to the dining locations that allow students to preorder food and reduce their time spent in the dining location.

However, the delivery portion of Grubhub is not covered by NC State Dining and has an additional fee.

Students must sign in to the app with their Unity ID to take advantage of the takeout option at dining halls.

Gilmore stresses students sign in with their Unity ID and add their NCSU Campus Card to their Grubhub account, which will allow them to use their meal credits, dining dollars or All Campus funds whenever they choose.

Shopping for textbooks can be overwhelming for all students, especially if it is your first semester buying them. There are several different options, from renting or buying used copies to purchasing them brand new.

It is widely known that renting textbooks is the lowest cost option for students, but if students want to keep their books as references in future classes, they can purchase them brand new at retail price or buy them used at a lower price.

As a pricing guide, we will compare a common textbook for all first-years, “An Insider’s Guide to Academic Writing: A Rhetoric and Reader,” for ENG 101 between each selling platform, new and used, respectively.

Here are some of the most popular routes students take to buy their textbooks: Wolfpack Outfitters “Insider’s Guide”: $100.15 | $75.15 Students can access the Wolfpack Outfitters website directly through their MyPack Portal, with a list of textbooks for their specific classes.

Textbooks are available to be bought brand new or used, or they can be rented through Wolfpack Outfitters.

Students have the option to ship textbooks directly to their home address or pick them up from the Wolfpack Outfitters store in Talley Student Union.

Students can also use the comparison shopping tool through the Wolfpack Outfitters website to compare prices of the same textbook at other retailers.

With SG having various branches, many meetings happen at different times.

According to Flowers and Simpson, the Senate will continue to meet every other Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. For the smaller branches, such as the executive cabinets, meeting times will be updated on the website on the branches respective pages.

“It varies from session to session based on the needs,” Flowers said. “Cabinet meets weekly, either on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on their schedules, and then departments, committees and commissions have their meetings that are dispersed throughout the week at different frequencies.”

“They [the dining team] have a lot of data to point to the things that have a high favorability among students […] so I think that even though there are going to be less customizable choices, there’s going to be a lot of things where students

What happens if my roommate is tested and placed in isolation or quarantine?

When your roommate is tested, they should be in isolation or quarantine until they get their results. If your roommate is ill, they must remain in isolation. If you have been with them, you also need to be in quarantine. If your roommate is not ill and is being tested because they were in close contact with someone who is ill or tested positive, they should be in quarantine but you do not need to be. If you live in on-campus housing, we ask that you return home to isolate or quarantine.

For students who cannot return home, we have a small number of housing units to isolate and quarantine students.

What happens if someone in my class tests positive for COVID-19?

The student who is sick should selfreport so we can find people who have been in close contact with them and protect everyone. Only close contacts of the individual will need to be in quarantine.

During the contact tracing program, we really need people to tell us the truth about where they have been and who they have been in contact with. Positive results are confidential, and we do not tell anyone other than people who need to be informed.

I heard that people my age don’t get very sick, so why quarantine? Shouldn’t we all try to get it to be immune? Once I have it, I can’t get it again, can I? Young adults can and do get sick from

COVID-19.There have been a number of deaths in people ages 19 to 30 so even if you are not very ill or displaying symptoms, you can still spread it to others.

The data around immunity is growing and is still changing, so it is not known yet whether having been infected with COVID-19 imparts immunity for any period of time or for your lifetime. This strain of coronavirus hasn’t been in circulation long enough yet to know about the length of immunity or the possibility of reinfection.

Why can’t we all just get tested for antibodies and prove we are immune?

We do know that people develop antibodies when they are ill, but they can also still be spreading the virus while building up antibodies. Testing methods are improving but currently many of the tests are non-specific and test for other coronaviruses, so a positive result may not indicate the antibody to COVID-19 and may test for different antibodies, not the neutralizing antibodies that cause immunity. Basically, most of the tests currently available are not accurate enough to issue an “immunity passport.” We are following this closely because the tests are improving, and when a test is available, we will look at it.

Diary of a first-year: My fears and excitements starting college The countdown to the start of the 2020-2021 school year has begun.

Classes are finalized and la st m i nute shoppi ng sprees have started. Everyone is excited about Caitlyn mov i ng back i n w it h Mahoney Correspondent their friends and picking up where they left off last spring. However, as an incoming firstyear student joining the Wolfpack community during COVID-19, this last week leading up to the first day of class is a time filled with excitement, anticipation and a whole lot of anxiety.

If you would have asked me back in March if this day was going to come, I probably would’ve laughed. At that point, everything was being taken away from me. I had lost my senior year. I was being kept from my best friends. The gym I worked at was shut down, and my older sister had come home for spring break

only to never go back. Back then, leaving for college seemed like a pipe dream.

Now, my dining room is filled with dorm necessities, and my textbooks are bought.

I am moving onto campus in six days, and it’s beginning to feel real.

My heart is about to burst out of my chest from excitement because I finally get to go back to school and begin my life again. Like every other first-year, I am beyond excited to have the chance to spread my wings and explore who I am. I am looking forward to being on my own and getting into a little bit of trouble. The fact that leaving home for the first year of college wasn’t guaranteed makes me so much more grateful that this is actually happening. I am honestly a little overwhelmed and shocked that I am actually getting this opportunity after seeing everything I have lost out on over the past few months.

With the happiness, excitement and gratitude comes anxiety and uncertainty.

Moving away from home for the first time would give anyone at least a little anxiety, but moving into college during a global pandemic brings its own set of uncertainties and fears. With everything online, am I going to be able to make friends?

Is leaving home right now the safest decision? For me, personally, most of the anxiety of starting the 2020-2021 school year stems from the fact that I am about to move into a glorified petri dish.

Moving into a dorm for the first time already comes with all its normal anxieties. What if I miss home? Will my roommate and I get along? How the heck am I going to fit all my things into that tiny space? Leaving home for the first time and moving in with a stranger is a scary enough experience to begin with, but as a first-year during COVID-19, I am also currently dealing with anxieties about how to not catch the virus while moving into close quarters with a bunch of strangers.

The fear of contracting COVID-19 makes going away to college for the first time a much scarier feat. Add on the fact that I am already missing my dog and sad about leaving my friends behind, the last week leading up to the first day of class is an emotional roller coaster of fear, sadness, anticipation and full-hearted excitement.

The truth is going away to college for the first time is always scary and emotional, but what big change isn’t? That doesn’t stop me from being filled with happiness and anticipation over the fact that, in six days, I am moving into my new home, and 10 days from now, my new life will finally begin. My heart is literally ready to burst out of my chest from the excitement, fear and anticipation of starting college, and now that the countdown to the first day of class is real, I am definitely freaking out, but I’m ready for it. I am ready to face the world and discover who I am. NC State, here I come!

Keeping NC State tradition alive in a tumultuous world NC State is a la rge school. From your first day, struggling to find your way around, to your last, ma k ing t he t rek from the Court of Carolina to the Brickyard for Noah the final time, it never Jabusch escapes your attention.

Columnist Its physical size is only fitting, though, seeing as it remains the largest university in the state, with a student body 34,000 strong. Considering the University’s age as well, it’s crazy to imagine that hundreds of thousands of people have ties to the Wolfpack.

Despite its astounding extent, many students still consider this institution their home. As this year’s incoming class arrives on campus, it’s my sincerest hope that they too are able to learn the magic that makes this apparent contradiction possible. The Wolfpack is strong because it is not a monolith,

but rather a composite of hundreds of smaller groups, each of us toiling, studying and striving in our own special way to live out our shared ideal of personal improvement through education.

This year, it’s more important than ever for new students to push themselves outside their comfort zone to meet new people. One of the wonders of college is that, for the first time in a long time, many students get the chance to learn how to make friends all over again, not being able to rely on friend groups that may have persisted from kindergarten through high school graduation.

Most years, this happens casually.

Maybe you step into class a bit early or linger in the halls a bit late, or you decide who to partner up with in case you miss a lecture. Maybe as you do homework in the lounge of a residence hall, others trickle in to cook, work or socialize, and you gain a sense for the common faces in the community. Wan-

dering through Campus Connections, you stumble on a club that matches your interests, and at the interest meeting, you meet a group of friendly and likeminded peers.

These experiences simply won’t happen the same way when we shutter up in our rooms, and realizing that, new students will have to exhibit admirable creativity as they seek to reinvent their social environment. Of course, as with any year, they will also need to swallow a good deal of awkwardness to breach the gap separating them from new and powerful friendships. Daring to seat yourself next to unfamiliar faces is as uncomfortable as throwing out a “So, how is everyone?” on a Zoom call before the start of class, and just as necessary.

Once this year’s freshmen succeed — and I have high hopes that they will — they’ll have achieved the latest victory in a core human endeavor: Taking on the unknowable behemoth and, through

bravery and the application of some human ingenuity, reducing it to a knowable form. In my mind, “Think and Do” means precisely this, that nothing can forever elude understanding; that any human organization — no matter how large and faceless — consists foremost of empathetic humans just as uncertain as you are; and that tasks are made valuable by the amount of hard work they require from you.

The friends I’ve made at school are among the most sincere connections I’ve had throughout my life, founded on common interests, forged through shared experiences and polished by the types of strain unique to the college experience. Through them, I grew to love this university and embrace its challenges. As I wade through my final year, I hope to cherish every experience, and I encourage all of my Wolfpack family, especially our new cubs, to try for the same.

ransitioning to college is a daunting challenge. We’ve all been there, as we also once swam across a literal sea of casual questions and anxieties. It’s scary, but with a bit of guidance, the bottomless sea of worries becomes a relaxing trip to the pool that you’ll soon call home. Therefore, some of our editorial board members are answering some common questions you might have.

Q: Should I get a parking pass as a freshman?

Zahra Rangwala, Marketing Manager: I chose not to get a parking pass freshman year. Freshman parking is in the engineering parking lot, so for me, it did not make sense to pay to park my car when it was not even easily accessible. The buses are helpful to get around school and the area, and at least one of your friends will have a car on campus. On the other hand, having a parking pass is beneficial if you plan on going home often.

Q: How many dining dollars do I need, if any?

Cassie Englund, News CoEditor: I used zero dining dollars as a freshman. It could just be because I’m antisocial, but at least I’m an antisocialite with some extra money saved.

I would not get any and just use the dining hall. Fountain ftw.

Rachael Davis, Editor-inChief: On the other hand, I had to constantly refill my dining dollars, because I never ate in the dining hall and found myself getting snacks and prepackaged food from Talley Market instead. If you are more of a snacker, definitely be more prepared, and get more dining dollars. Talley Market can

be like a grocery store for you! Also, don’t forget that vending machines also take dining dollars.

Q: When can I get involved in clubs and stuff?

Shilpa Giri, Assistant Opinion Editor: I started working for Technician pretty much from day one. I went to their open house during Wolfpack Welcome Week, and that’s how my story with Technician began! But at the same time, if you need more time adjusting, you do you. All student orgs at NC State will be ready to welcome you with open arms at any time, so don’t worry about missing out.

Before COVID-19 I would spend a lot of time downtown and exploring local coffee shops around Raleigh. However, there are still plenty of COVID-19 friendly activities as well. For example, there are a number of hiking trails close to campus, including trails at Lake Johnson as well as Umstead Park. I also recommend checking out the North Carolina Museum of Art for beautiful outside grounds and free art exhibits.

Q: What’s the biggest adjustment to living on your own?

Cassie Englund, News Co-Editor: For me, it was having to walk down to the dining hall or to Hillsborough Street every time I wanted to eat a meal. By the end of my first semester, my nightstand was full of M&Ms as a supplement. There were pros and cons to the situation.

Q: Is the change in class difficulty between high school and college as rigorous as I’ve heard?

Austin Dunlow, Arts & Entertainment Editor: My classes didn’t necessarily get more rigorous or harder than I expected they would. I think the biggest issue is having to be more selfpaced and self-guided. Your professors aren’t going to remind you every day that this project is coming up or you have a test next week. You should definitely get a planner or at least the dreaded Google Calendar.

Q: Is there anything fun to do in Raleigh?

Marissa McHugh, Assistant Photo Editor: There’s a variety of fun things to do in Raleigh, especially when you know where to look. One of my favorite things to do downtown is attending First Friday, which features local artists and vendors throughout shops and museums. I also enjoy keeping a list of new restaurants to try on my phone, which keeps me going to parts of the

point of the college experience. You’ll no doubt see tons of kids you have class with, and it’s a great place to go and eat, study, hang out with friends or even just people-watch. Whether you see kids skateboarding shirtless through the dining area or watch people jump over the Talley seal to avoid years of bad luck, it’s definitely the place to just go and hang.

Q: Should I move off campus after my first year?

Jaylan Harrington, Multimedia Managing Editor: The good news here is that NC State’s housing policy has made the decision for you: You will have to move off campus because of how difficult it is to get housing as a non-freshman. Don’t worry though, you’ll be very ready to get an apartment after sleeping with someone three feet away for a year.

Q: What’s the best meal plan available?

Sarah Newton, Copy Desk Chief: It really all depends on how much you think you eat. If you’re someone who needs three square meals a day to func-

Q: How do I not get lost on campus?

Shilpa Giri, Assistant Opinion Editor: Google Maps. I used Google Maps so much my first year; it’s definitely a life saver. But also, take a day to explore and get lost on campus; this can be kinda cringey, but there’s a certain charm to that. This semester, we get the extra treat of getting lost over Zoom links so... excited!

Q: How do I get along with my roommate?

Vasanth Ramdas, Assistant Video Editor: The best advice I can give is to communicate and know what works best for both of you. Don’t force the issue by trying to be friends because chances are it’s not really going to go anywhere. If you’re already best friends...well college is a great time to make new friends, no?

Q: Any college dating tips?

Anna Beth McCormick, News CoEditor: Don’t do it. I fully believe that college is a time to be selfish and meet new people and try new things without being tied down to one person… just don’t tell the guy I dated freshman year.

Q: What do I do if I’m struggling with classes?

Rachel Amponsah, Video Editor: Well, speaking from experience, I will say first figure out what you are specifically struggling with in the class, and if that is everything, that is OK. Talk to your professor about what you need to work on and what are some resources you can use to help you understand the material and help improve your grade in the class or classes. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help because there is a high chance that NC State has the resources to help you, and if they don’t, well that’s what Quizlet and Google is for, if you catch my drift.

Q: Should I join a fraternity or sorority my freshman year?

Anna Beth McCormick, News CoEditor The great thing about Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) is that you can participate in recruitment without being obligated to join an organization. I’ll admit, I was a skeptic and signed up for recruitment to meet people with no plans of joining a chapter. But during recruitment, I found a chapter I knew I wanted to spend my next four years with that has taught me so much about myself and given me a support system like no other.

Sign up! At the very least you will be a boss at (virtual) small talk by the end of recruitment.

Q: How do I get student football tickets?

Camden Speight, Sports Editor: Football tickets are free for students with a valid NC State student ID, but students need to request them. Within a week of an upcoming home game, NC State Athletics will send an email with instructions on how to request a ticket. They use a lottery system for who gets tickets, which includes extra points based on your year, how many games you’ve been to and how early you show up for games. For most games, it shouldn’t be much of a problem to get a ticket, but this year could be different if Carter-Finley is not at full capacity. Besides football and basketball, other sports allow entry with just a student ID.

Q: Where should I go to get information about Club Sports?

Camden Speight, Sports Editor: NC State has a long list of competitive club sports, and their emails that can be found on the NC State Wellness and Recreation website. Some club sports are more active than others, but the list includes ultimate, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag football and quidditch. Many can also be contacted through social media and the Get Involved at NC State website. Tryouts and events with club sports will look very different this year with club restrictions, so contact the club to get more information.

Q: What are some cool places to hang out at on campus?

Alicia Thomas, Managing Editor: There are no good places to hang out but there are cool places to cry. The Court of North Carolina is an aesthetically pleasing place for a main character cry. If you are feeling particularly dramatic, weep in front of Holladay Hall on the off chance Chancellor Woodson walks past you. Hasn’t happened to me yet. Overall, the rush hour traffic on Hillsborough Street is enough to make anyone bawl out of frustration.

Q: How can I make friends on campus?

Tristan Tucker, Assistant Sports Editor: The best way to meet new people on campus is through continued campus involvement and chasing things that you are passionate about. I’ve made some of my closest friends at State through organizations like Technician and by joining clubs that I was interested in. Wolfpack Welcome Week is a great time for this, and finding people with similar interests will make your time on campus more enjoyable.

Alicia Thomas, Managing Editor: Don’t be afraid to start study groups! I met some of my closest friends by mustering up the courage to ask the people that sat next to me if they wanted to study. Did I get a ton of learning done? No, probably not. But I do have fun memories that will last me a lifetime. Shout out to D.H. Hill.

Q: How do I get used to managing my own finances now that I’m away from home?

Ryan Farischon, Photo Editor: You don’t.

Joseph Rivenbark, Social Media Analytics Editor: Maybe the best thing for me was just flat out telling people “I’m broke” or “I can’t afford that,” It’s a pretty good excuse and most college students know the struggle. Additionally, if you are new to a credit card, make sure you get used to checking your balance, the last thing you need is to rack up costs from eating on Hillsborough.

Also, if you can, an on campus job is nice.

Q: How do I get involved with intramural sports?

Tristan Tucker, Assistant Sports Editor: NC State utilizes the convenient site IMLeagues to organize intramurals for students on campus. Once you create an account, all the available intramural sports are listed in a user-friendly manner. From there, you can select what sport you are interested in playing and request to join someone’s team or create your own with friends! It’s an easy way to meet new people, and some of the best times I’ve had at NC State were playing basketball with my friends.

Wednesday, August 5: Cartoon Network Trivia

The University Activities Board (UAB) is hosting five events during Wolfpack Welcome Week from July 31 to Aug.12 for NC State students. These events will be available virtually, in hybrid format or in person, with masks and social distancing. According to UAB President Bri Murphy, a fourthyear studying biogenetics, students will be required to register for all events in advance through the UAB Eventbrite registration to maximize safety for everyone attending or working at the events.

Murphy said all events will have a maximum capacity of 50 people.

While registering for an event, students are required to answer pre-screening questions about COVID-19 symptoms and potential exposures, Murphy said. The registration provides a roster of people to be notified in case anyone who came to an event tests positive.

UAB will continue activities for students throughout the semester to engage with the NC State community and allow them to meet new people as long as it is safe to do so, according to Murphy.

Free Stuff On Thursday, Aug. 6, UAB will be tabling in Stafford Commons outside of Talley Student Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and have many free giveaway items for students to pick up. The line for the giveaway items will be organized to be socially distant.

The film, which has not yet been announced, will be projected on the side of Talley on Aug. 7 from 8:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Social distancing will be enforced on Stafford Commons either with pre-marked seating areas or volunteer enforcement. Students can register for the event in advance via Eventbrite.

Welcome Black Week Welcome Black Week is a collaboration between the Black Students Board and the African American Cultural Center to put on events Aug. 16-21, according to Murphy. The week will include a combination of virtual and in-person events, including giveaways and the semiannual Back to School Jam, which involves opportunities to make connections with clubs and campus organizations. Be on the lookout for more information about Welcome Black Week on the Black Students Board.

Witherspoon Student Cinema UAB will continue to host free films for students every Friday at Witherspoon Student Center. The capacity for the theater will be 50 people to allow for social distancing.

Murphy said she is excited that UAB will still be able to show films in person because it is fun to see the loyal filmgoers come out every week.

For first-time moviegoers, the student cinema shows blockbuster films and even prescreenings of movies that have not yet been released in theaters. According to Murphy, the cinema has done pre-screenings of popular films like “A Star is Born” in the past.

Must-watches to get your Wolfpack football fix Bryan Pyrtle

16-10. To top off a methodical 13-play drive, Glennon took the snap on fourth and goal from the 3-yard line with 19 seconds to play and found wide receiver Bryan Underwood over the middle for the touchdown, tying the contest at 16 points apiece.

After completing the PAT, NC State would hold off FSU and celebrate a 17-16 thriller of an upset. That iconic do-or-die touchdown pass was the culmination of an inspiring upset that highlighted an otherwise underwhelming 7-6 regular season for the Pack.

It remains arguably the most memorable play of the past decade for NC State football.

The 2010s was an eventful decade for Wolfpack football. It saw five bowl wins in eight appearances, four former Wolfpack QBs make their NFL debuts and plenty of exciting football games. From heated rivalry games to record-setting comebacks, here are the top five football games to go back and watch from the last decade: No. 5 Date: Nov. 19, 2011 Location: Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, North Carolina Opponent: No. 7 Clemson Tigers In one of two upsets against top-10 opponents on this list, the Wolfpack delivered a thumping to the seventh-ranked Tigers, posting three touchdowns in the second quarter alone to enter halftime up by a score of 27-3.

The Pack didn’t let off the gas in the second half either, continuing to shut down the Clemson offense by forcing two interceptions and allowing only 10 points to ice a 37-13 victory. In an otherwise mediocre 2011 NC State football season, this first leg of arguably the most exciting two-game stretch of NC State’s decade showed just how competitive ACC football can be.

No. 4 Date: Oct. 5, 2017 Location: Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, North Carolina Opponent: No. 17 Louisville Cardinals If you like high-scoring, offensive spectacles, this game is right up your alley. In a battle between two quarterbacks who now face off in the NFL’s AFC North, Louisville alum Lamar Jackson against NC State alum Ryan Finley, the Pack opened the scoring in the second quarter when Finley tossed a 48-yard touchdown to wide receiver Kelvin Harmon. Both squads would trade blows in this high-octane, tightly contested match, but 24th-ranked NC State began to pull away in the second half.

Starting in the fourth quarter, Louisville clawed back from a 24-13 deficit, narrowing it to 32-25, as Jackson trotted onto the field looking to make some magic happen with just over three minutes to play. But NC State’s linebacker Germaine Pratt had other plans, as his pick-six solidified a 39-25 victory in the Pack’s favor.

This high-flying shootout, featuring over 350 passing yards from both Jackson and Finley as well as almost 1,000 total yards between the two squads, showcased two of the best quarterbacks in the ACC as two ranked programs duked it out on the gridiron.

The Wolfpack was tested by the Tar Heels, but came away with a 34-28 overtime win on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018 in Kenan Memorial Stadium.

In maybe the most quotable matchup of the decade, which was perhaps most noted for a comment from NC State’s Finley where he referred to Kenan Stadium, the home of UNC football, as “Carter-Finley North.” There was also a clarification from Tar Heels head coach Larry Fedora that a postgame scuffle was really just “celebrating” by both teams.

In an old-school slugfest, which featured only one passing touchdown compared to seven such scores on the ground, running back Reggie Gallaspy Jr. put on a show with 129 rushing yards on 27 carries, including five trips to the end zone. Despite Gallaspy Jr.’s efforts, the game was deadlocked at 28 points each at the end of regulation, signaling overtime.

The Tar Heels started the overtime period with the ball but failed to convert that possession into points, as a missed field goal gave NC State possession of the pigskin and a chance to wield bragging rights until the next clash between the two rivals.

The Pack would capitalize on that chance, as Gallaspy Jr. punctuated his performance with his fifth and game-winning rushing touchdown. It was this game-clincher that immediately preceded the aforementioned “celebrating” between the two rival schools, adding fuel to the already blazing feud between the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels.

No. 2 Date: Nov. 26, 2011 Location: Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, North Carolina Opponent: Maryland Terrapins Charles Dickens opened his novel “A Tale of Two Cities” with the famous line, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

Well, NC State’s last game of the 2011 regular season, one week removed from its upset of the seventh-ranked Clemson Tigers, was

the tale of two halves. Despite its 2-9 record entering the ballgame, Maryland torched the Wolfpack defense in the first half to compile a 34-14 lead heading into the locker room. The Terrapins opened the scoring action in the second half as well with a 46-yard rush to the end zone, but that would be the last Maryland score of the afternoon.

Despite facing a 41-14 deficit, the NC State offense sparked to life, rattling off 42 unanswered points, including a pick-six by cornerback C.J. Wilson to seal the victory.

This result constituted the largest comeback in school history and second-largest in conference history at the time. It may have been a rough start for the Pack, but watching it outscore Maryland 35-0 in the fourth quarter is can’t-miss football.

Come-from-behind victory? Check. Gamewinning score with under a minute to go?

Check. Suffice it to say, this game had everything.

After losing a heartbreaker in its conference opener against the Miami Hurricanes, the Wolfpack engineered a heartbreak of its own to knock off third-ranked Florida State, but like the 2011 comeback against Maryland, it was the tale of two halves. The Seminoles shut out NC State in the first half, entering halftime leading 16-0.

But once again, the Wolfpack woke up in the second half and chipped away at FSU’s lead, while also stifling the Seminoles offense. Following an FSU punt that went out of bounds at Florida State’s 43-yard line, quarterback Mike Glennon led the NC State offense onto the field, still down

Sports are an integral part of the college experience; there is no doubt about that. But right now there are a lot of question marks surrounding what football and other fall sports will look like this year. Will there be a football season? Will fans be able to attend games? What about the other fall sports?

While we might not know the definitive answers to these questions, we can look at what the ACC has already said, what other conferences and schools are doing and what has happened with professional sports in the past month to give you a better idea of what fall sports might look like this year.

What the ACC and NC State have already said and done: On Wednesday, July 29, the ACC made a big announcement about what fall sports would look like. Football is going to play an 11-game schedule with 10 conference and one nonconference game. Both soccer teams will play a minimum of six games and volleyball will play a minimum of 10. All three teams are able to schedule more in and out of conference games if they want, as long as the opponents meet the ACC’s medical protocol requirements. Cross country will also compete this fall; however, scheduling of regular season competitions will be up to each school’s discretion.

It was also confirmed that competition for baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and mens’ and women’s golf was canceled for the fall, but golf and tennis student-athletes are eligible to compete unattached.

While, as of right now, there are going to be competitions, there is nothing confirmed yet about if fans will be allowed to attend.

Athletics Director Boo Corrigan said in a letter sent out on the same day as the ACC’s release it was highly likely Carter-Finley Stadium would be operating with a reduced capacity, if fans are allowed.

university, there will be at least five, with a possible sixth depending on the nonconference game, home football games, the dates and time of which are yet to be announced.

We also know if fans are allowed at sporting events, there will be mobile ticketing only, according to Corrigan’s July 29 statement. This was done in order to create both a contact-free entry into the venue and flexibility in case the schedules are forced to change.

The ACC Championships for football, men’s and women’s soccer and cross country were also announced July 29. Football will take place Dec. 12 or 19 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The championships for cross country and both men’s and women’s soccer will take place at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Cross country will take place Oct. 30 and feature all 15 member schools. Men’s and women’s soccer will each only feature the top four teams and will be held Nov. 13 and 15, and Nov. 6 and 8, respectively.

NC State has also released the results of two separate rounds of COVID-19 testing within the department. The first round of results yielded five positives, and the most recent round, the results of which were released July 31, yielded just two positives. It was not specified if the positives tests were from student-athletes, coaches or staff.

As of now there will be sports this semester; however, that could change in the coming weeks. What exactly the sports will look like is also yet to be seen. Technician will

provide updates as more information about fall sports becomes available.

What other conferences are doing: Like the ACC, other big conferences have started to announce what their plans are for fall sports. The SEC has already said it will play a conference-only football schedule (meaning the possibility of Mississippi State being NC State’s plus one is gone). Similarly, the Big Ten and Pac-12 have announced each league will only play in-conference.

The lone Power Five conference yet to announce a decision is the Big 12, which is reportedly split on the way to set up its upcoming football schedule.

As for the Pac-12, a collection of players from the conference have vowed to opt-out of fall training camps until the Pac-12 guarantees to protect the players from the conference, as complications from COVID-19 and other issues have dampened the connection between the players and conference officials.

The players told The Players Tribune that they want both scholarship and walk-on athletes covered in benefits in writing.

While the big conferences are moving to conference-only, or majority conference only schedules, some have outright cancelled football for the fall.

The Ivy League postponed all sports until at least January, and it remains to be seen if the league will even play any of its regularly scheduled fall sports this year.

All of the uncertainty surrounding fall sports has led some schools to cut programs altogether. Stanford cut 11 of its varsity pro-

grams, including field hockey and men’s volleyball due to budget issues related to COVID-19.

Bubble vs. no bubble in professional sports: The best comparisons for what college sports could look like this fall are the MLB and USL Championship, which are both currently playing outside of a bubble. Unfortunately for college sports, the writing is seemingly on the wall for these leagues.

The USL Championship and MLB have both already had games postponed due to positive tests, either in the build up to games or from previous opponents. As of July 29, the USL Championship had nine different matches postponed in just over two weeks of play, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Rueter.

Similarly, the MLB has had its own issues with coronavirus, as six teams have seen games being postponed so far in the young season.

Multiple outlets have also reported that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has warned the season could be shut down if coronavirus is not managed better by the league.

While the leagues are doing the right thing by postponing games when players test positive, it seems like only a matter of time before something slips by these protocols, causing the seasons to be halted.

It may not be a perfect comparison, but these two leagues are the closest thing to what college sports will look like in the fall since there is no possibility of a bubble.

Women’s Soccer - Lulu Guttenberger The NC State women’s soccer team’s leading returning scorer from last season is senior defender Lulu Guttenberger, and she scored some of her goals in the biggest games of last year. The Velburg, Germany native scored a goal against Navy in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and against No. 8 Arkansas in the second round of the tournament.

Not only can Guttenberger score in big moments, but she is also an excellent defender, earning ACC Defensive Player of the Week at one point in 2019. Guttenberger was also named All-ACC Third Team last season and ThirdTeam All-Region by United Soccer Coaches.

Winter Sports Men’s Basketball - Manny Bates Redshirt sophomore Manny Bates, one of the Wolfpack big men standing at 6-foot-11, led the ACC in blocks last year, averaging almost three a game. This incredible disruptive force on defense both makes the games exciting and helps lead the team to victory.

On offense, he can be productive, but this will have to be a bigger focus on his game, only averaging about six points per game.

Bates missed a few games last year due to injury and missed the entire 2018-2019 season before that, so he still has plenty of time.

Bates and the Pack will be returning after the 2019-20 season that saw the ACC tournament get cut short, as well as its NCAA tournament chances.

Bates will be working alongside DJ Funderburk, a 6-foot-10 redshirt senior who gathers more of the points.

Bates and Funderburk work beautifully together, being threats on both sides of the court.

Women’s Basketball - Elissa Cunane Elissa Cunane is perhaps the strongest piece of the women’s basketball team at NC State. Standing at 6-foot-5, Cunane dominated scoring all over the floor, both with hard-fought points in the paint and skillful jumpers. Last season, she averaged over 16 points per game and nearly 10 rebounds with only 27 minutes. Because of her hard work, Cunane was unanimously picked as an First-Team All-ACC honoree. She was also picked into the All-ACC Tournament Team as well as making the third team for AP and USBWA. Lastly, Cunane was the only player in the ACC to average a double-dou-

ble in the regular season. Cunane’s versatile playstyle and intense work ethic helped produce a Wolfpack championship in the ACC Tournament. Cunane’s vast improvement from her first two years should be exciting to watch this winter season.

Wrestling - Trent Hidlay Trent Hidlay, who will be a redshirt sophomore, will be a top dog once again on the wrestling mats this year. Wrestling in the 184 weight class, Hidlay experienced a ton of success last year, going 23-4 overall, with a 4-1 ACC record. He earned 2020 All-America First-team honors, All-

four All-ACC Performer titles (three of them for indoor). This past season, Cobb was a 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships Qualifier for the triple jump event. She also won back-to-back events in the triple jump at USC and VT. In 2018-2019, she earned all-conference status for the triple jump. She continues to get better; her freshman year best for triple jump was 41’5.25” and last season she posted a 43’5.75” jump at the Hokie Invite.

While she betters herself on t he field, she continues to impress in the classroom, as she made the 2017-2018 Indoor All-ACC Academic Team. Cobb’s improvement throughout the years is evident, and her senior year will be her best one yet.

Men’s Indoor Track - Cravont Charleston Graduate student Cravont Charleston will enter his fifth and final year for the Wolfpack, and his indoor season will be the last track season. Charleston is a sprinter in both indoor and outdoor. He is an All-American for the 60-meter race in 2019, when he set the school record with a time of 6.54 seconds. Charleston won the ACC Championship in 2020 in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.58 seconds. He won first at USC and got third at Texas Tech this past year in the same event and also won at Virginia Tech with the 200m race, proving his versatility in indoor. Overall, he is an eight-time All-ACC performer, with four of his titles being indoor.

Men’s Swimming and Diving - Nyls Korstanje Nyls Korstanje will be a junior this upcoming winter season. His first two years have already boasted an array of awards and accolades to his name. He is an 11time All-American in seven different events.

Korstanje is a seven-time ACC Champion in six different events, including the 200 medley relay which he won in both years.

In his freshman year, he won ACC’s Men’s Freshman of the Year. Last year, he won the ACC Championship for the 50-meter and the 100-meter race, and placed third for the 100-meter butterfly. He was ranked top-15 nationally for the events he participated in at the ACC Championships, scoring 6th place, 9th place and 15th place.

With a season cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, Korstanje still had plenty of metal to take home from the past year. He is also the world record holder for the 4x50 mixed freestyle relay. While at college, he kept up with his schoolwork, earning Academic All-ACC Team in 2019 and CSCAA

Scholar All-American in 2020. With plenty of time still to improve, Korstanje still has plenty of potential and action still to go.

This lengthy list of accomplishments and achievements can only get bigger with the skill that Alons possesses. Out of the water, Alons also succeeds in the classroom, earning Academic All-ACC Team and CSCAA Scholar All-American in both of her years.

Gymnastics - Lauren Kent Senior Lauren Kent is one of the prime examples of a scholar athlete. In each of her three years at NC State, she has made the All-EAGL Scholastic Team, and she received WCGA Scholastic All-American honors in both 2018 and 2019. As an athlete, she is one of the more versatile athletes, being the only member of the Pack to compete in the all-around at every single meet during the 2020 season.

She competes in each event for a reason; with a career high allaround score of 39.2 out of 40.

Last season, she scored an incredible 39.00 or higher allaround score in six different meets and was EAGL Gymnast of the Year, made the All-EAGL First Team for Bars and AllAround scores, and made second team for the beam event. She has received 15 honors in her three years, making All-EAGL teams in bars for all three years and beam for two years. Her most recent achievement of making first team in All-Around proves her success and versatility in all events, and should be exciting to watch her senior year

of gymnastics.

Rifle - Emily Fisher Junior Emily Fisher has been blasting away the competition for the Wolfpack in her past two years. She participates in both the smallbore and air rifle events for rifle, with a personal best of 587 and 593 out of 600, respectively, both achieved this past season. Her air rifle career high helped the Wolfpack achieve the second-highest team score in program history. Her highest aggregate score is an 1175 out of 1200, after beating her high score three separate times this past year. Fisher took 18th place with an 1169 finish at the Great American Rifle Conference Championships, the best in the Pack.

Because of her high scores, she received an All-GARC Smallbore Honorable Mention in 2020. In her freshman year, she led the Pack at the GARC Championships with 580 in smallbore, finishing 10th that year. Going into her third year, she continues to lead the team and improve her own skills, and should be fun to watch this winter season.

Spring Sports Ba seball - Devonte Brown Starting off with baseball, senior outfielder Devonte Brown is the name to know. After having a relatively quiet first two seasons in Raleigh, the Georgia native broke out in the shortened 2020 season hitting in the cleanup spot. In 17 games, Brown batted .338 and had 19 RBIs with five home runs. His hot bat led to him starting the season on a 13-game hit streak.

Softball - Sydney Nester Moving to softball, a name to know is junior pitcher Sydney Nester. The Wolpfack’s ace was phenomenal her sophomore season with a record of 10-4 in 86.1 innings pitched with a 3.24 ERA and 89 strikeouts. These stats were good enough for her to lead the Woflpack in nearly every pitching category. Nester was one of two pitchers in the ACC with double-digit wins in 2019.

Men’s Tennis - Tadas Babelis Switching from the diamond to the court, we will now look at Tadas Babelis

standout men’s tennis senior Tadas Babelis.

Coming from Lithuania, Babelis has starred in both singles and doubles for NC State during his time in Raleigh. He had a record of 25-16 to account for the most wins on the team when combining singles and doubles last season. Babelis has also competed in a Davis Cup for his country, bringing that international experience to the team.

Women’s Tennis - Alana Smith On t he women’s side, junior Alana Smith is the highlight. 22-11 was her singles record, including an 11-5 record when playing as the No. 1 seed for NC State. For four and a half mont h s l a s t sea son, she, alongside senior Anna Rogers, were the No. 1-ranked doubles duo in the country. All of this success led to her being named in AllAmerican for the second straight season.

Men’s Golf - Max Steinlechner Swinging over to the links, sophomore Max Steinlechner is a name you should know on the NC State men’s golf team. On a team that was full of seniors last year, the Austria native held his own and will look to star for the Wolfpack this year.

He had six rounds under par and one top-10 finish last season. When recruited, Steinlecner was ranked as RYAN FARISCHON/TECHNICIAN

Women’s Golf - Monika Hartl For the women, Wolfpack students need to know senior Monika Hartl. She led the team with a 72.66 stroke average and will look to best that in her final season in Raleigh. The Germany native also had three top-20 finishes, including a second place finish at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field - Jamar Davis Running over to Dail Field and Track Complex, the name you need to know for men’s track and field is junior Jamar Davis.

David competes in the long jump and the triple jump, and is a former All-American.

He is also a three-time All-ACC performer.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field - Kayla Beasley Lastly, women’s track and field stars junior Kayla Beasley. She competes in the field events of weight throw and shot put. She put together six top-10 finishes a year ago, most notably first place in both her events at the Gamecock Opener.
