WELLNESS AND RECREATION

Wellness and Recreation empowers the Wolfpack community to thrive, explore and grow in these six elements of wellness: purpose, financial, physical, emotional, social and community. We value movement and inspire behaviors that improve health and well-being. Our programs, services and facilities enhance academic success by assisting students in developing skills and resilience needed for college and beyond.

To inspire a culture of wellness by providing premier, innovative and inclusive programs, services and facilities that promote healthy, active lifestyles to enhance student success.

Facilities

The Wellness and Recreation Center and Carmichael Gym provide 430,000-square-feet of recreation, fitness and wellness spaces. Features include:

11 indoor basketball/multipurpose courts

Memberships

Students

Currently-enrolled, fee-paying NC State students registered for on-campus courses are automatically Wellness and Recreation members. Enrolled students not paying full fees may purchase a membership.

Non-Students

Members of the NC State community and their household members are eligible to purchase a Wellness and Recreation membership. All memberships can be purchased in person at the Wellness and Recreation Center.

Membership benefits include:

• Access to the 430,000-square-foot Wellness and Recreation Center and Carmichael Gym and outdoor spaces

• Access to register for programs and services

• Complimentary t-shirts and towel service

• A wide variety of fitness and recreation rental equipment

• Complimentary day-use lockers throughout the facility

• Low-cost overnight locker rentals within our locker rooms

• Sponsorship of up to three guests per day

Parking

The lot situated on the south side of the Wellness and Recreation Center is designated as a C Permit parking lot. Parking is enforced Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. The nearest visitor parking available is at the Coliseum Parking Deck.

Fitness Basics: Gym Orientations

These free orientations are designed to help users learn how to best utilize the fitness spaces, equipment and programs in the Wellness and Recreation Center.

Fitness Assessments

Assessments provide you baseline information about your current level of health, fitness and movement and allow you to measure your progress over time.

Getting Started Fitness Classes

Find motivation and support in an environment designed for users of all experience levels in one of our many group fitness classes offered each week.

Training Programs

Personal Training

Our nationally-certified personal trainers take a science-based approach to develop safe and effective programs tailored to your individual needs, goals and interests. One-on-one, partner and online training options are available.

F45 Training

F45 is a global fitness brand programmed by fitness experts to keep you reaching for that next level. Each session includes a unique interval-based workout to give your exercise routine variety and new challenges.

PackFit Training

Led by nationally-certified trainers, this program offers individualized coaching in a high-energy, community environment, combining functional strength training and muscular conditioning for a full-body workout.

PackStrong: Learn to Lift

Designed to enhance your knowledge, form and technique of foundational strength training movements, this program focuses on barbell movements to create a well-rounded workout routine.

Open Climbing

The Climbing Center offers both roped climbing and bouldering on our 48-foot high wall. Equipment, including ropes, harnesses, belay devices and shoes, are also provided at no extra cost.

Clinics

We offer a variety of low-cost climbing, belay and lead climb clinics each semester for students and Wellness and Recreation members.

Competitions

Our Climbing Center hosts bouldering and top-rope climbing competitions for participants of all levels of experience to test their skills with this tight-knit climbing community.

Climbing Center Teambuilding

Wellness and Recreation offers a variety of team and leadership development programs to university groups, community organizations and corporate groups.

Challenge Course

The Jim Wall Challenge Course, located six miles from Main Campus in Schenck Forest, offers both low and high course programs to challenge your personal limits and overcome barriers as a team.

Workshops

Let us bring the challenge to you with our custom teambuilding workshops. Our trained facilitators will lead your group through a variety of activities at a location of your choice.

Add adventure to your schedule with our outdoor trip offerings, including hiking, climbing, backpacking, paddling, cycling and more! Trips are offered at an affordable rate and include the tools you need for a great experience, including gear, food and instruction from our expert trip leaders.

Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center

For those that prefer to adventure on their own, the Outdoor Adventures Equipment Rental Center offers a variety of gear to rent on a daily, weekend or weekly rate, including:

Backpacking essentials

Bikes

Camping gear

Canoes and kayaks

Lawn games

Tailgating equipment

Intramural Sports

We offer more than 40 individual and team leagues, tournaments and special events annually to the NC State community. Activities range from traditional sports like flag football, basketball, soccer and volleyball to unique programs like pool battleship, Texas hold ‘em and pickleball.

Open Recreation

We offer dedicated hours and space for drop-in activities like badminton, volleyball and table tennis. With 11 indoor multi-purpose courts, 12 outdoor tennis courts, four outdoor basketball courts and two pools, there is plenty of space for activities like basketball, tennis, pickleball and swimming any time the facility is open and reserved programming or academic courses are not taking place.

Club Sports

For students seeking a more competitive experience, there are more than 50 registered club sport teams on campus. These student-led organizations practice regularly and compete against other colleges and universities at local, state and national levels.

Clubs may be recreational, competitive or a combination of both, emphasizing student leadership, service and engagement that enhance your college experience. Clubs are open to all NC State University students.

Our nationally-certified coaches offer both individual and group coaching opportunities, designed to meet you wherever you are on your well-being journey. Specializing in behavior change, wellness coaching allows you to work on a variety of personal growth and development topics.

Level up your wellness knowledge with one of our interactive sessions designed for classrooms, departmental meetings and student organizations. Select from the catalog of curated wellness topics or book our experts for a custom workshop.

Howl and Chill

These monthly social self-care events give students a chance to step back, take a break and add relaxation to their to-do lists. Centered around the six elements of wellness, these events are designed to help you explore your well-being holistically while building connections along the way.

Wellness Challenges

We host a variety of free, email-based challenges each semester that are open to the entire campus community to help you make healthy lifestyle changes. Challenges focus on movement, hydration, mindfulness, personal finance and goal setting.

Join the more than 600 NC State students employed by Wellness and Recreation annually. Work in a welcoming environment that offers flexible scheduling and real-world experience by developing professional and transferable skills to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.

Learn to lead the Pack with one of our nationally-recognized certification and training programs. Participants gain hands-on experience in a supportive and inclusive environment led by our team of experts. Students who complete these programs may have the opportunity to apply to join the Wellness and Recreation team.

Fitness Instructor Training Program

Participants will complete an online self-study program, coupled with format-specific workshops, that will prepare them for acquiring the national fitness certification of their choice.

NASM™ Personal Trainer

Students will gain the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively instruct clients to reach their individual fitness goals in a one-on-one setting.

ACE® Health Coach

Participants will obtain the knowledge and skills needed to assist people in adopting a long-term state of improved well-being.

American Red Cross Health and Water Safety

Our aquatics team offers courses throughout the year to NC State students and Wellness and Recreation members, including:
