ANNOUNCING
RAISING $50 MILLION TO INNOVATE ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES, UPGRADE AND BUILD INSPIRING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS IN DURHAM AND MORGANTON, AND DEEPEN THE REACH OF STEM EDUCATION THROUGHOUT NORTH CAROLINA Learn more about these ambitious plans – and progress so far – inside this report and at IGNITE.NCSSM.EDU Please help realize this vision to meet our school’s mission now and into the future!
ALUM HONORS DR. JOAN BARBER WITH GIFT TO SUPPORT UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY PROGRAMS For years before she retired as Vice Chancellor for Student Life, NCSSM faculty emerita Dr. Joan Barber regularly pulled together hardwon grants with money from the margins of NCSSM’s yearly budget to run summer programs for underrepresented and underserved minority students. In 2020, Alan Cline ’90, and his wife, Michelle, honored Barber’s efforts by establishing the Barber Fund for Underrepresented Minorities for STEM Leadership. The fund provides direct support of NCSSM’s Summer Leadership and Research program, which Barber created in 2008 to help incoming minority students better prepare themselves for the rigors of life at NCSSM; and Step Up to STEM, a program Barber created in 2013 that brings rising 9th-grade underrepresented minority students from throughout the state onto the NCSSM campus for an in-depth exploration of the opportunities available in STEM fields. The gift is the largest ever from an individual or family directed to underrepresented minority (URM) programming at NCSSM.
ANONYMOUS TRUST GRANT WILL EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES IN EASTERN NC NCSSM’s outreach efforts in Eastern North Carolina got a significant boost in 2020-2021 with a grant of $100,000 from the Anonymous Trust. The gift will support the targeted expansion of NCSSM’s Step Up to STEM and Summer Accelerator programs into rural and underserved communities east of Interstate 95. Summer Accelerator helps rising 5th- through 12th-grade students explore STEM topics through both residential and online experiences that range from one to three weeks, depending on the age group. Thanks to the Anonymous Trust, NCSSM is better positioned to leverage its resources and partnerships to strengthen the STEM ecosystem in North Carolina’s eastern Coastal Plain.

WHAT WE AC
ALUMNI ESTABLISH SCHOOL’S FIRST ENDOWED FACULTY CHAIR IN MEMORY OF DR. JOHN KOLENA The faculty at NCSSM have, for decades, been recognized through awards and honorifics for their excellence in the classroom. It was this expertise upon which the school was founded, and their leadership and innovative spirit continue to build NCSSM’s stature among the best public high schools in the country. In 2021, NCSSM alumni honored this tradition of instructional excellence by establishing the school’s first ever endowed faculty chair. Created in memory of the late Dr. John Kolena — a beloved astronomy and physics professor at NCSSMDurham for 32 years who had a profound impact on generations of students — the John Kolena Memorial Fund is nearing its $1-million goal and will forever fund an instructional position in the NCSSM Physics Department through endowment earnings.
PHIFER FAMILY GIFT TO NCSSM-MORGANTON HONORS DR. JOHN FLEMING As NCSSM-Morganton moved toward its 2022 opening, the Phifer family from Morganton committed $250,000 in support of the campus’ completion in honor of their long-time family friend and fellow Morganton native, Dr. John Fleming. Fleming has dedicated his life to the preservation of African American history. He helped create and direct museums highlighting African American history, wrote books and articles about the Black experience in America, taught at the university level, and served on numerous boards including his appointment by President George W. Bush to the National Museum of African American History and Culture Presidential Commission. He is now the museum director in residence for the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville, Tennessee, and director emeritus of the Cincinnati Museum Center in Ohio. In recognition of the gift and Fleming’s achievements, Fleming’s name will adorn the central entry staircase into Goodwin Hall, a four-story historic building that houses classrooms, the main check-in area for the Morganton campus, and administrative team.

WHAT LEADERS HAD TO SAY
Both NCSSM and the Foundation have worked strategically over the past several years to build our capacity to raise funds to advance our mission, and now we see that foresight starting to pay off mightily for North Carolina students. Barb Coury, Vice Chancellor for Development & NCSSM Foundation President
With the opening of our second campus in Morganton and our focus on making the Durham campus just as state-of-the art, we are poised to increase opportunities and take the NCSSM experience to yet another level, all for the good of our state and its students. Dr. Todd Roberts, Chancellor
Private philanthropy – because it enables calculated risk-taking, innovation, and flexibility – is truly key to the great stature NCSSM has achieved to date, and to its future greatness. Dr. Murray Abramson ’83, MD, MPH, 2021-22 Chair of the Foundation
With a second campus opening in Morganton in 2022, NCSSM is doubling down on its promise to fill the STEM pipeline with the next generation of leaders who are ready to solve complex, realworld problems. We are preparing a better future for ALL of North Carolina, our nation and the world. Follow along with NCSSM-Morganton and subscribe to our newsletter: NCSSM.EDU/ MORGANTONCAMPUS
NORTH CAROLINA’S LEADERS REALIZED A BOLD VISION IN CREATING THE NATION’S FIRST PUBLIC RESIDENTIAL HIGH SCHOOL FOCUSED ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS MORE THAN 40 YEARS AGO. Today, NCSSM knows how to generate opportunity for learners in every corner of the state, and North Carolina communities are flourishing in partnership with the school. We have vision, ideas, partnership, and connections – and as a community, we must come together to maximize these opportunities with the right investment of resources. So, NCSSM Foundation is working over several years to raise $50 million in philanthropic support from alumni, parents, and friends of the school to supplement and leverage the generous support from the state of North Carolina. Talented young people all across North Carolina need you to join with others who believe in the promise of NCSSM and do your part to strengthen the impact of NCSSM’s innovative STEM education.
