SEPTEMBER 2022 We are excited about the progress we have made for the Annual Fund goals for the Ignite + Transform Campaign today. We are grateful for your generosity which allows us to make an immediate impact on the day-to-day life of our NCSSM community. NCSSM Foundation donors allow us to expand opportunities and help to meet the needs of North Carolinians today and well into the future. This school year, we aim to raise $1.5 million in operating support of NCSSM. As NCSSM expands to serve more students in Durham, Morganton, Online and in Extended Learning, it is crucial for unrestricted annual support to grow each year. We cannot meet this goal without your continued help. Please join me in supporting NCSSM students this year through an unrestricted gift to the Foundation. Our ability to more fully support students from across the state is limited only by the resources that we have. I hope we can count on you and your continued support.
ANNUAL FUND Enabling the hallmarks of the NCSSM experience year after year
Annual philanthropic gifts to the NCSSM Foundation elevate the experience for students beyond what is funded by the state of North Carolina.
HIGHLIGHTS:
1.
On 2.22.22, the NCSSM Foundation publicly announced Ignite + Transform, a comprehensive campaign to raise $50M to create innovative academic opportunities, upgrade and build new learning environments in Durham and Morganton, and extend the reach of STEM education throughout the state through extended learning offerings.

In August 2021, Dr. Larry Hodges, Morganton Chair of Computer Science, remotely taught Human and Computer Interaction from Morganton, NC, to a class in a Durham classroom. This was the first course from NCSSM-Morganton faculty and an exciting pilot of the technology and processes that could lead to more cross-campus opportunities.

NCSSM celebrated its newest NC STEM Hall of Fame honorees, all women leaders in STEM: Retired Vice Chancellor for Student Life Dr. Joan D. Barber, venture capitalist Dr. Christy L. Shaffer, and NASA astronaut Christina Hammock Koch ’97, who helped inspire NCSSM students and young leaders about LAST YEAR their career paths, as a part of the NCSSM RAISED 2022 NC Science Festival.

Mac Barnes ’22 won a Gold Medal Portfolio Award for Art in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards national competition. Dr. Garrett Love was named NC Tech Educator of the Year.

NCSSM applied for and was awarded $122,000 in grant money used to expand psychological services to students, diversify mental health for special populations, and implement software to collect program data more effectively.
EQUITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION Employee Dialogue: Race, Racism, & Workplace. Supported leadership opportunities for faculty to help lead in the areas of equity, student support, curriculum development, and outreach.

NCSSM hired its first Chief Diversity Officer.
INVESTING IN FACULTY + STAFF EXCELLENCE Conducted a restorative practices two-day workshop for all of the Durham faculty on how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities.
