he last year seems to have flown by and convention time is approaching fast. Now I could tell you all about the class schedule, the city, the amazing things staff is lining up but I’m sure others will touch on that this issue. I want to tell you about the benefits you won’t read about in any of our convention promotions. It’s true that sales, business and technical training is available in many forms. You could sit home and get a lot of good information off different training platforms. The most important and beneficial part of convention is when you step out of your comfort zone and make friends with others in the industry. Norfolk will be my 20-year mark of working in the industry (not counting the half dozen conventions I attended as a kid). In those twenty years I have made true lifelong friendships. I’m sometimes too proud or embarrassed to ask for help or share some of my failures. However it’s amazing when you learn others have had or currently have the same struggles. The willingness to share information is unlike any other industry I’ve been a part of. To get the most out of your convention experience you have to hang around and make friends and join in conversations. We are all just people, we all have made mistakes, we all started somewhere. I love meeting new people. I started out my business beyond broke. At one point I was homeless, I’ve slept in my truck at conventions. I have my fellow sweeps to thank for where I am now. Find those

who have been around and ask questions, ask for information, ask to go to dinner. I love this industry for everything it has done for me and now I’m humbled to serve and give back as much as possible. So, in summary: Hi, I’m Jasper Drengler the President of the National Chimney Sweep Guild and I’ve failed in more ways than most. The Guild and its amazing members have formed me into the man I am today. I love the friends I’ve made and I want to make more. Please find me in Norfolk and let’s trade stories and grow together. “I wanted to write in and tell you how much I appreciate the quality of your products. We inspect approximately 20 to 30 chimneys every week and we run into every product there is on the market. I can tell you with absolute certainty that your FireGuard and Guardian products have no equals. I can say this because I've tried the other products and had to deal with many call backs due to cracks and failures as well as the complications involved with the installation. FireGuard and Guardian are simple to install and we do not get call backs. I've been using your products since 2005 and it is always a pleasure to inspect a chimney we repaired years ago and see that it still looks as good as it did the day we fixed it with your products. Thank you Jay!” Dave Laverdiere - Owner of Boston Brick & Stone - Pasadena California

A Sneak Peak At Our Convention Presentation: Online Marketing In 2019

2019

Taylor Hill

6 S W E E P I N G

Spark Marketer It’s almost that time again -- convention time -- and we couldn’t be more excited. As a marketing company that serves over 100 chimney sweeping businesses across the nation, there’s nothing we like more than seeing new and familiar faces, and spending some time with some of our favorite people. It’s why we never miss an NCSG convention! But we can’t lie. One of the reasons we’re so excited about this year’s convention is that we’re going to be talking about some of the current marketing trends, challenges, and predictions that today’s business owners need to consider. And boy, is there a lot to cover this year! As marketing nerds who love helping service businesses thrive, this kind of stuff really gets our motors running. But our real goal is to provide you with actionable tips and useful knowledge that you can use to plan your year and the years ahead.

March 2019

So what can you expect to learn during our presentation? Some of the things we’re going to be talking about are: • What aspects of local marketing are outdated and no longer helpful and which aspects are still solid and bringing great results. • What’s the most impactful area of search, and what technologies and trends are going to disrupt search or change the way people look for and find businesses like yours. • Why content is still KING and what types of content you should invest time and energy into producing. Of course, we’ll also talk about where you should be publishing and sharing that content. • Why having a review generation and response system in place is no longer a suggestion, it’s a must!

• What you need to know about Google Local Service Ads and how they will impact you once they enter the chimney sweeping vertical. • How to safely use tracking numbers, without negatively impacting your SEO efforts. • What Google’s Mobile First Indexing update means for you and what you need to do to your website to keep those rankings up. We’ll also talk about our predictions for this year and provide you with several actionable tips that you can immediately work into your 2019 marketing plan. But with the high rate of change that defines the online marketing landscape, you need more than just a yearly presentation or snapshot. You need to stay ahead of the curve if you want to stay ahead of the competition -- and for most companies, that means you need a trustworthy marketing partner that really knows your industry. Keeping Up With The Changes Is Exhausting -- Do You Have A Marketing Partner That Can Help? The bottom line is this: the world of internet marketing is changing at a rapid pace. In the last year alone, there were nearly 100 major Google, Yelp, etc. updates that impacted local businesses. And that doesn’t include all of the sometimes daily algorithm changes, new trends and technologies, and shifts that can shape the local marketing landscape. In 2018, we saw Google Local Service Ads take off (although they’re not yet available for chimney sweeps); Google Posts become a lucrative thing, and then quickly become a less lucrative thing; Yelp and Google remove thousands of legitimate reviews; Facebook eliminate organic reach for businesses; Google roll out the Mobile First Indexing algorithm; and so on and so on.

8

Do you think Angie’s List, HomeAdvisor, Yelp, or whatever platform you spend your marketing dollars on is keeping up with all of these changes for you? What they’re concerned about is how much money you’re investing with them, not where you’re ranking in Google or if your Facebook ads are bringing you business. And even if you subscribed to every SEO and search email newsletter out there, you’d have to quit running your business just to read it all and keep up with the changes and updates.

it’s not your only option. When you choose a knowledgeable, curious, and transparent marketing partner -- someone who stays up to date on what’s changing, what’s staying the same, and what’s coming down the pike -- you’ll be better equipped to navigate the wild ride and adjust your marketing plan accordingly, without working even longer days. Whether you choose us or someone else, by hiring a company that knows and understands the changing landscape, you’ll see far better results than you’d be able to get on your own -- and without adding one more thing to your plate. Plus, you’ll be able to focus on what you do best, which is run your business, without worrying about something getting missed. Just something to think about. Well, we’ll keep it short, but we hope to see you at this year’s convention. We won’t hold back there, but we promise to move through the info at a slower pace than Google. For all of our sakes.

Exhibitor Profiles Approved Industries 78 Lawrence St, Hackensack, NJ 201-489-5100 and 866-439-0069 www.approvedindustries.com info@approvedindustries.com Approved Industries was founded on the belief that chimney safety is not an option—it is a necessity. The company’s dedicated team has trained countless chimney and venting professionals across the US and Canada. Through science and modern technology, Approved family of sprayed ceramic products— Thermocrete® and Smoktite—have brought innovation to the chimney repair and venting industry. Thermocrete® is a premium, durable ceramic liner for use in the repair, restoration and energy conversion of chimneys and chimney flues. Thermocrete seals holes and cracks, increases efficiency, and strengthens the chimney. Thermocrete makes it easy to retrofit chimneys for conversion to natural gas. Installation is quick, cost effective and environmentally friendly. And unlike traditional fuel conversion methods, Thermocrete

requires no major construction and does not reduce the diameter of the flue. Smoktite is a highly insulative ceramic product that is used to seal, smooth and insulate chimney smoke chambers without removing the damper frame or adjacent brickwork. Smoktite sprays on to seal the surface with a durable ceramic coating that is good up to 2291 degrees Fahrenheit and is impervious to acids, vapors, and water. Introduced in the summer of 2002, Smoktite is now being used by chimney professionals all across the country.

Will You Be Traveling To Seminarland In 2019?

28 S W E E P I N G

O

ne of the words my friend Ellen Rohr uses is the word “Seminarland.” Ellen describes Seminarland in the following way: This is my favorite place. Seminarland! I love the energy of a live event. If we are to make our dreams come true, we start with imagining what it is that we really, really want. Seminarland is a great place to do that. Leave the shop and the day-to-day behind. Spend time with like-minded people who want to stretch and grow and live life on purpose. Listen to new voices with different opinions and experience. Reflect after class in the silence of your hotel room or on a long walk. Meditate. Review what you’ve discovered and update your business plan and list of projects. When I am scheduled to speak, I embrace the opportunity to enjoy the vibe, community and wisdom of the other speakers. Oh…so good!

which to attend, which have the best ROI and what is the best decision that we can make for our companies.

Likely you may have already made a trip to Seminarland in 2019, our industry is now blessed with an abundance of events that make learning new skills so much easier in 2019 than just a few short years ago and adding to this is the availability of virtual training, where one can visit Seminarland at the time and place of their choosing. In today’s world virtual Seminarland is available 24/7, this can be an asset to you as you implement new ideas and concepts, as it allows you to replay and review courses that may have inspired you with new concepts. So have you added Virtual Seminarland to your training?

As Ellen shared, many times the high energy atmosphere charges you up, and it inspires you, but here is the kicker, how do you take that inspiration home and implement it? That is often the challenge. When you look back over your own past travels to Seminarland, how often have you been there, got inspired, but when you returned the inspiration fell to the wayside?

With such a wide array of destinations that are now available to choose from, one must make the decisions of

March 2019

It is also a budgetary decision and attendance at Seminarland should be a part of the budget for every company. Then the decision must be reached as to what is the goal of this attendance? Is it to attend a specific class? Is it to hear a specific presenter speak on an area of their expertise? Is it to launch new services or products, or is it to take your present offerings to a higher and perhaps more profitable place? Maybe it is the hope of hearing a gold nugget you never expected, but are able to pickup from a class or from networking in the hallway (often where the most significant learning can be found).

Now what is your plan to make the most of your visit to this magical place we call Seminarland? What are your goals for attendance? Will you be taking notes, and will you review these later? What about if you get inspired by a presenter, or a new product, how will you take this inspiration and implement it, or will there be ideas that you feel are great that will wither and die due to lack of implementation?

Remember inspiration followed by implementation is how great things happen. Yes you may need to do some course corrections as you delve into the implementation stage, this is natural. One important piece is to implement a process to track and measure the success of your new initiatives. My words to you this month is to suggest you make notes of how to take the inspiration you feel home and implement the actions required to see the results. Build great things from the tools and tactics you hear this year. Today Seminarland is open 24/7 so not only make use of the educational opportunities of Seminarland that you attend in person, continue Seminarland throughout the year with the use of the training courses now available to you in the virtual world. Set 2019 as the year of training to a higher level, using both live and virtual means, on-line education brings a wealth of training to your fingertips, at the click of a mouse or of the tap on a screen of your smartphone or tablet.

30 S W E E P I N G March 2019

And with that my wishes are for you to have successful visit (s) to Seminarland in 2019, and I look forward to you joining me in one of more of classes I will be presenting over the Seminarland Season, both live and virtual. Blume If you’ve ever attended an NCSG convention you have almost certainly met Blume, our convention photographer. He owns and operates Blume, The Merry Sweep out of Greenville, South Carolina and has been a continuous member of the NCSG since the early 90s. From US Presidents to some furry friends, he’s seen it all. What is a question you get asked most about being a chimney sweep/chimney sweeping/ the industry? How long have you been a sweep? Answer: “A while…” What advice do you wish you had received when you were getting started? Discipline and Time Management and you don’t have to work for everybody. What is the biggest challenge you face on the job? What are your best strategies for overcoming it? Too Much Work…I thought I had figured it out until this year. Who was your most famous customer? I guess that would be George Bush but my favorite was Sunshine Smith. What is your proudest accomplishment? From a sweep perspective probably being asked who I would recommend to go and sweep the White House. From a personal perspective being married to the same person for 36 years. Have you ever had to make your own tool to solve a particular problem? Of course, I am a chimney sweep you know?

March 2019

31 S W E E P I N G

Weirdest thing you have ever found in a chimney? Not much, seven dead squirrels, nine dead ducks, two live ducks, bundle of shingles, liquor bottles, raccoons, the soccer ball the mother had just given the two boys a few days before. What do you like to do outside of work? One of my favorite things is getting together with my ‘mixed up group’ of fellow sweeps called The Sheep Dogs. Also, there are the ‘Friends of Don’ that meet every year at the convention. Nothing quite like having Sweep friends. What is, in your opinion, the most valuable part of being a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild? As the late Pete Luter once said, you can learn just as much hanging out in the halls and bar at a convention as in the seminars.. I guess I’m weird, I like just hanging out with my fellow sweeps. We used to call it the Hang Tight Club…but most of us are too old to stay up all night now.

32 S W E E P I N G March 2019

Thanks, Blume! One of the best parts of being a member of the NCSG is the friendships that are formed, and we are so glad you’ve made bonds that will last a lifetime. If you know someone who should be featured in the next Meet a Member, submit your nominations to Annemarie Stockton at astockton@ncsg.org.

What Advice Do You Have For First Time Convention Attendees?

34 S W E E P I N G

Make a list of questions that you would ask an expert about the trade or the business. Then ask those questions of anyone there. I do this every year. I always get answers that I need and friendships for life. —Jacob Cromwell Hang out at the bar. Seriously. Lots of good information exchanged there. — Matt Mair This is an industry that truly cares about one another and I always come away from convention inspired with new ideas on how to be a better sweep but also learn some things that I may be doing wrong and try not to repeat those things in the future. The trade show is crucial. Not only talk with vendors and learn about various products but talk with other sweeps about what they like and dislike. Some of the most valuable information I’ve found isn’t necessarily what works but what doesn’t and that my friend is well worth the price of admission! Welcome to a whole new world with infinite possibilities. Convention is what you make it. See you there! — Buck Owens Talk to the people at the trade show booths, they are a wealth of information. Introduce yourself to others. Meet people during breaks and ask questions on how people do tasks or what resources they use. —Debbie Wiedwald

March 2019

Don’t just go to the seminars, ask questions or get involved in the conversations or get up and assist if volunteers are requested. —Ron Rust Sign up to volunteer. It is a great, quick way to get to know the staff and the people you are volunteering with www.ncsgconvention.org/volunteer —Brandi Biswell Wear your Professional Work Uniform  — Show your colors! —Charlie Dunn

AN INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR OVER 25 YEARS

CSIA UPDATE March 2019

Checking In with Chuck by Chuck Hall, CSIA President president@csia.org

The 2019 education year is underway. Now that “busy season” is starting to wrap up, we turn our attention to improving ourselves for next fall and winter.

February kicked off CSIA’s education calendar for 2019. It started with the 2-day Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician (C-DET) Workshop at the Technology Center. I’m pleased to say that all attendees passed the exam and we have new C-DET’s to add to our ranks. The next in-person opportunity to earn the C-DET is with a 1-day Review and Exam at the NCSG National Convention in Norfolk. February Masonry for Chimney Professionals and Advanced Masonry courses also occurred. Chris Prior is one of the best in

www.CSIA.org

the country at helping chimney and venting technicians learn and improve their masonry skills. It’s an important skill for your team to have as you try to meet your customers’ expectations to fully resolve their chimney defects. If you missed out on February, both courses will be held again in August. Thank you to everyone at SaverSystems in Richmond, IN for being such great hosts.

Following masonry week, we held our first National Chimney Sweep Training School of 2019. February’s class was sponsored by Copperfield. Both Jasper Drengler and myself video conferenced in to the first day of the course to commend these soon-to-be Certified Chimney Sweeps® on their choice to attend the school, as well as to give them information on both NCSG and CSIA, and answer any questions they may have.

Russ and our instructors continue to do a great job in ADVERTISEMENT

improving Training School, particularly as the new manual is added to the curriculum later in 2019. One special note, Training School attendees are now receiving a climbing helmet with their tuition. CSIA is firmly committed to emphasizing the “Safety” in Chimney Safety Institute of America. Speaking of safety, we’re likely just wrapping our first OSHA Compliance Training class as you’re reading this. The course agenda is packed with so many things we don’t even think about as it relates to keeping ourselves or our team safe on the job. Climbing helmets and respirators are just the tip of the iceberg. Put this on your 2020 to-do list.

From there, we get rolling with new and improved versions of Inspection & Report Writing and Chimney Physics in March, Installing and Troubleshooting Gas Hearth Appliances and Roof Access Safety in June, and Training School in May, July, August, and September. Never stop learning. Get yourself or your employees to classes in 2019.

o you remember your first convention? Being a first-time attendee at a convention, whether large or small can be overwhelming. A first-timer may not know anyone, may be unsure about what sessions to pick, and may worry about feeling out of place. As a regular convention attendee, you can help bring them into our family! “Your first convention can be intimidating or overwhelming. As a regular attendee we need to reach out to first timers to help them feel welcomed. I promise that you will learn something from them and hopefully make a new friend,” said Jasper Drengler, NCSG Board President Tom Hunkele, NCSG Governance chair and former at- large director added, “It’s everyone’s responsibility as a member of the NCSG and as seasoned professionals in our industry to help share their knowledge and help

build upon the experience of the first time attendee at the convention. It is often difficult for anybody to step outside there comfort zone and be that person that is welcoming and supportive! Think about this, “if it’s not you then who?” Take the time to be a mentor at this year’s convention, answer questions, share your knowledge, and build a relationship that lasts a lifetime.” First timers will have a yellow badge at convention. NCSG encourages you to introduce yourself to them, exchange information, share stories, helpful tips, support and check in with them throughout the week and AFTER! When first timers feel connected and community, they will be hooked! The Tech Center team is looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces next month!
