eather is the great equalizer. While we often build tents to get jobs done this time of year, mother nature plays dirty. Our schedules are all full, and an early November blizzard breaks out. Two weeks of below freezing. The phone blows up, everyone demanding immediate service.

I LOVE IT. I love the challenges of this business, I love the many problem solving skills required, I love meeting different people and hearing their stories. I love seeing amazing homes and building one of a kind fireplace.

The problem is I also just want every to be happy. My staff, customers and mostly my family. In his book Blue Collar Gold, Mark Stoner hit it on the head when he spoke about there being a time for everything and everyone. Family must endure business building time if they want the rewards later. I have always been a hardwired workaholic, I’m not taking a day off between October 15th and December 24th. I will quit early for anniversaries, basketball games and wrestling meets, but its harvest season. Come January it’s time to travel and enjoy life, like taking the whole family on a cruise to Puerto Rico to help rebuild homes.... every teenager’s dream trip.

If you are reading this and you are not yet a member of the NCSG I encourage you to give membership a try for your company. Beyond the many cost saving and business building benefits listed throughout this magazine being a member of the NCSG give you a chance to connect with business owners

just like yourself and learn from each other’s experiences.

Our staff team in Indianapolis is great and is always there to help support our sweeps. Super proud of all of them this fall for their hard work and working together to get our new staff up to speed. Shout out to outgoing program coordinator Claire Rutledge on her new gig as she goes back to school! I have three employees in my business who are also heading off to class next semester and I’m very proud of they and wish them all the best of luck! Thank you to all the sweeps out there kicking butt to make homes safer and providing a much needed service and hopefully turning a profit. Thanks to my techs who I know read this monthly, you all are rock stars and I love all of you. The Shopping A lot of employers think that the millennial workforce really only values purpose, flexibility, and validation, but they’re like every other generation in that they need to make a good living in order to be satisfied in their work -- and at no time is this more at the forefront of their minds than during the holidays. Why? This is the time of year when we give gifts, regardless of our religious association. Most of us are lucky enough to have parents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, kids, significant others, and friends, but the cost of gifts can add up quickly. If you’re not paying your employees a meaningful wage so they can save up for this time of year or spoil those dear to them every once in a while, they’re going to feel some sort of resentment about it when it comes time to start shopping for the holidays.

They’re going to wonder why they’re always coming up short and whether they could be paid better for their time somewhere else or even out on their own.

The Questions Think about it, what’s one of the first things family and friends ask when you catch up over the holidays? “How’s work?” Even if your employee provides a canned response, it’ll get them thinking. Then later on by the fireside, the wheels will start turning and the scales will start tipping one way or the other.

This is the time of year when your employees will be thinking about the overall satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) with their jobs and hearing about how great (or terrible) others have

it. Will your employees feel satisfied, appreciated, and thankful as they share how work is going, or will they feel like the Grinch, desperate to prevent another year of work life misery from coming?

The Music & Feel No matter what your beliefs, all of us become more focused on family and the things that are important to us during the holidays. It’s in the activities, the shared memories, the classic films, and even the music. When Bing’s honeycomb voice sings about the Fates in “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” you can’t help but get a little existential. Am I happy? Do I feel validated in the work I spend 40+ hours of my week performing? These thoughts are bound to run through the heads of your employees, and maybe even your head, during the holidays.

What will the answers be?

The Promise The grand finale of the holiday season is New Year’s Eve -- the night that promises an end to all the unpleasantries of the year we’re leaving and a chance to start fresh, to do better. New year, new you, and all that jazz.

Naturally, we all spend time thinking about what’s working, what’s not working, and what we’d like to change. Is having you for a leader working for your employees or is it one of the first things they’ll want to scrap in the new year? Has this year with your business been golden or is it something your employees will want to forget as they start fresh in the new year? It’s something you should

be thinking about because it’s something your employees will be thinking about.

Reflect & Dig Deep So as you enter this holiday season, take some time to consider, not just how your employees see your business, but also how you see your business. Are you building the best business you can build?

Ask yourself if it’s time to implement some changes and work on a company culture shift. Maybe you have some toxic employees that you need to weed out or some systems you need to get in place. There’s no time like the present. Use this time when you’re asked, “How’s business?” at every dinner and every gathering to reflect and dig deep. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll know whether or not you have anything to fear this holiday season and whether or not you need to make some changes going into the new year. The good news is, it’s never too late. You can always become a better leader and build a better business, and it’s no harder than being a bad leader with a bad business.

ecently on one of my weekly podcasts of The Chimney & Fireplace Success Network I had a guest by the name of Damian Mason.

I had met Damian some time back as he was a speaker at an event I attended, and he had a profound subject matter and even more importantly added some great points of view to the subject. Damian is a Reinvention specialist and does coaching and keynote speaking. After the event Sheryl worked with Damian under his coaching program and even more insight was shared with her. The discussions they had helped her as she is reinventing her two businesses and is in a state of transition.

As Damian discussed, both in his presentation, and later in one on one discussions, reinvention is a subject that each person undergoes many times in their lives, and businesses also undergo.

Reinvention could be the time we go from a child in diapers, to a toddler learning to walk and continue throughout childhood years. As we approach each of these steps in life we will make changes in our processes, our habits and our day to day lives. It is often said among educators that reinvention past the 5th grade level gets harder and harder.

We reinvent ourselves as we enter adulthood, and we make the decisions of our lives, our careers, our marriages and how we raise our own children. For many there may be a failed marriage, and this will result in more changes. As we age we see our minds change, our opinions change, and this is affected by the world around us.

But with a business there is also change. I recently presented

a 1-hour webinar entitled A Documentary of Chimney Relining / Why We Reline and as I assembled this program I was able to reflect on the tremendous reinvention that had occurred over a 35-year period of the chimney service industry. We can even see how we have reinvented our business as we move forward, but looking back is easy, looking forward is very difficult, in fact it is impossible for some.

Just think for a moment, if Sears had been really looking forward, would they not be Amazon today? If Kmart had been looking through the windshield would they not be the Walmart of today? And if Ford was looking ahead, would Toyota have risen to the height they are, and where will Tesla go to.

The question is, where will your business be in the future? Have you really thought about this?

And what is the tag line, the message that will bring your business as the world around you changes and reshapes itself? Will it be wood, will it be gas, will it be oil, or will it be a new exotic fuel that may just be developing?

What does the customer want, what are they looking for? As Henry Ford said, if I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.

But Mr. Ford had the foresight to look forward, and built a car kingdom, but at the same time Mr. Ford also reached his own lid, he did not understand that the customers’ whims had changed, now it was not that they simply wanted a car, now they wanted it in colors, and Mr. Ford felt strong that the black car would serve them well, after all it was transportation, it just wasn’t the color they wanted their transportation in. The

story is that as designers brought him new designs he destroyed them, and the reinvention occurred when new leadership stepped to the plate, but Mr. Ford remains to this day as an icon of the American business dream, his words and phrases often quoted. To the tune of the Japanese car makers were quoted as saying that to build the TPS (Toyota Production System) a marvel of lean effectiveness, they got the concepts from the teaching of Henry Ford in his books and words.

There are many other stories I learned from the study of reinvention, how Kentucky Fried Chicken became known as KFC. The reason was concern with cholesterol and fat, so KFC was the new brand. The Colonel is still there or so they say in their ads, but the tag is KFC, even though there was never a man that worked harder that Colonel Harlan Sanders and how he traveled the USA, sleeping in the back seat of his car, to sell his finger lickin good recipe business owners where if they signed the deal he got 2 cents per piece.

There are of course stories about success that disappeared, and it will happen with each person as they move forward.

I look at myself and the changes and reinvention of my life, it is enough to write a book about, which I did.

What is the wisdom I wish to share with you today as you read this? How will you reinvent yourself and your business to face the challenges of the future? What is your message? Do you realize how fast technology has changed our lives and this will speed up even more as technology advances forward? As you ponder on this, perhaps even

reading this in the electronic version on your device, it was less than 20 years that wireless internet was introduced to the masses. Today who does not have a wireless device?

The concept, perhaps it is wisdom, is to stop in your tracks and spend some time as we approach the end of 2017.

Think for a moment your mind is a blank canvas, and on this mental canvas what does your business look like in 36 months, not 10 years and not 20, rather in 3 years, a simple 36 months.

You see this is how you plan for reinvention, not have to have forced reinvention like the grocery stores of American are going through right now where Blue Apron and other food suppliers are delivering right to your door, where Uber may be shopping for you, because that is the world we have rapidly morphed into.

What is your tag line, will it be how you provide better indoor air quality? Will it be how the air quality of American will be better due to your work? Or perhaps it is that the customer can expect to use less fuel?

This I can tell you, most likely the business you operate and manage in three short years may vary widely from what it looks like today. You will reinvent, but the real victors of the reinvention game are those who think of the next level, what it will be, how it will be done and set a course to get there.

Decide for your yourself, you will be one of the guys that others are saying, JUST HOW DID HE DO IT or your choice can be that you will be saying, WHAT HAPPENED, THE SHIP SAILED, AND I MISSED IT.

Here hoping that you are guiding that ship instead of watching it sailing into the sunset, what say you?

What is the NCSG Technical Advisory Council, and how can it help me?

Answer: The Technical Advisory Council, or TAC, is a committee whose purpose is to provide free technical assistance to members of the National Chimney Sweep Guild. The TAC is made up of volunteers from across the country that will offer their assistance, insight and or advice, in a wide variety of technical categories.

When a NCSG member calls the TAC helpline, they will reach a menu that will list the categories to choose from.

Once the category is selected your call will be directed to the appropriate Council Member for that category. Council Members bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to each category they specialize in. Depending on the category, Council members may include individuals that work for product manufacturers, CSIA Certified Sweeps currently working in the field, or other NCSG members with decades of experience in that category.

Many of the TAC members are our industry leaders.

Categories include dryer vents, masonry chimney construction, gas venting and the NFPA 54, oil flue sizing the NFPA 31, customer communications, stainless steel liner installation, video scanning, report writing, pellet stove installation and venting, vented and vent free gas logs and controls, and general sweeping.

was honored to be able to attend the European Federation of Chimney Sweeps (ESCHFOE) conference in Finland this year and represent the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG). This was the third conference I have attended over the last few years. It is a wonderful experience to meet and share knowledge with Chimney Sweeps from around the world. The ESCHFOE conference has a congress meeting one year, then a technical meeting the following year. This year was the technical year. Several other representatives from the United States attended: CSIA President Chuck Hall, CSIA ex officio Mark Stoner, international relations representatives John and Diane Pilger.

Chuck and Mark’s wives, Karen and Terry, also attended. It was good to see and spend time with them all as well.

Opening session: The opening session is similar to that of the NCSG annual convention. The sitting board of directors welcomed the representing attendees and made their opening statements. ESCHFOE leaders stressed training as an important item during the opening meeting. Training and standards are the leading reason chimney sweeps get together to learn and share information with others in the industry. This all leads to a greater good and gives relevance to our trade.

Costs for ESCHFOE members were discussed to maintain the association. Obviously without

funding, the association would not exist. This conversation went over well with the members as they understand the importance of the organization and agree that operating costs do increase. The members are very supportive of the organization just as our NCSG members are of our organization. They understand the role that trade organizations have in not only training and camaraderie, but also the representation they provide to ensure that the trade continues to flourish and communicate current events with its members.

Brochures and surveys were handed out to members. New brochures were made and are to be handed out to tell potential members and people who they are, what they are about and where they are headed. The surveys are to be used for multiple reasons. Not only for information on the happenings of members, but also to understand business practices and fuel usage of different member countries and work areas.

Next year’s conference will be held in Romania.

The board visited Romania to check out the location just as the NCSG staff visits future sites for our convention. I have always found it exciting that the ESCHFOE members get to travel to different countries for their conference. How wonderful it is to see different countries and learn about different cultures. This is a similar reason

due to the country’s government controlling the trade. The sweeping wage has been lowered so much that people have gotten out of the trade. Obviously, wages are necessary to finance trips.

Lots of companies shutting down bit by bit due to governments setting regulations and pricing for the trade. As with our own businesses, if our numbers are not set to generate profit, the company will not survive very long. Governments can run for a long time in deficits, sweep companies can not.

I always look forward to our NCSG conference being in different parts of the country. Part of the lure of convention is getting to leave your area and visit new and exciting places that you may have never visited in your life. How many other trades do these things or have the opportunities we as chimney sweeps have, thanks to our association?

The leadership and most members of ESCHFOE feel the deregulation of chimney sweeping has lowered standards and they want to limit deregulation to keep standards higher. They encourage deregulated sweeps to maintain high standards and education to keep the trade strong.

Deregulation basically means that the government is no longer involved and does not set rates and operating areas of companies. After talking with many sweep company operators, I think the fear of change is the biggest issue they have with deregulation. There are a huge amount of limitations that the government enacts on sweep companies. I feel we are fortunate in the United States to not be hugely limited in our business operations by government agencies. Everyone agrees standards are good for everyone, but I see where being regulated and limited in operations can hinder a company from growth and potential.

Every time I have visited Europe, I see that energy conservation is always a top priority. Europe is trying to reduce energy consumption 20 percent. It has been a struggle.

They have reduced 11 percent. They believe energy saving is the future of chimney sweeping.

It is very smart to see changes and opportunities.

More and more chimney fires and problems are happening from sweeps not doing their job properly. Sweep companies are encouraging sweeping heating systems up to 3 times per year. In Brussels, they don't allow wood burning any longer. Chimney sweeping laws have been updated in Germany. In Germany, they have fine dust alarms and they don't allow usage of certain appliances. Some countries have evolved to pellet burning. They argue big business creates lots of

be swept yearly but it is not enforced. ESCHFOE president suggested getting with the press and getting the word out about the importance of having the chimney serviced. Unfortunately, deaths have happened and tragedy tends to remind people of the importance of chimney service.

The Romanians did a presentation on their congress summit hosting for next year in 2018.

ESCHFOE will also be touring areas and attending the conference in Transylvania. Wives are invited for excursions and relaxation. The Romanians had a conference this year in Romania and had roughly 100 attendees. The Romanian delegation also attended our NCSG chimney sweep training school in Indianapolis this year. Both passed the certification class. This made me very proud. Our Romanian friends are fantastic people and I look forward to visiting their country next year.

ESCHFOE praised Finland for the location and all the efforts put into hosting this year. The resort was very relaxing and fit the group gathering well. Sweden is being looked at for the next technical meeting in 2019. In 2020, they are hoping Poland will host the ESCHFOE. ESCHFOE encouraged countries that have had many changes to come forward and discuss changes in their areas. Reports were submitted by all countries and several spoke verbally on their reports. Belgium stated that they have a law that chimneys

The Romanians spoke about working on their standards and codes. They talked about qualifications of chimney sweeps and problems with insurance not being concerned or asking for papers to prove sweeping has been performed and responsibility of the homeowner to have it cleaned to avoid loss of life and property. They spoke with ESCHFOE about the wording "qualified person" and what it means. ESCHFOE stressed members selling themselves through quality work practices and education. ESCHFOE reminded members that as the public demands more wood burning that the government will loosen its requirements and this is always good for chimney sweeps. Sweden has developed reports on cancer and chimney workers in Sweden. Their report should be ready for next year’s conference and should be interesting and helpful.

After lunch, we had a class on standards. The first part was explaining which areas of the standards were represented and analyzed by ESCHFOE.

Written information was provided and open for questioning. Cooking appliances, boilers, and draft hoods were talked about. It was stressed that cooking appliances with draft hoods need adequate combustion air for proper function. They spoke of the customer not wanting to spend much money on quality venting products but pointed out that the standard calls for a certain quality.

Any less is cheating the customer. They also stressed the importance of proper clearances to metal chimneys.

An open forum survey about required fire inspections, building plan inspections, and ventilation air requirements were asked of all the countries attending. The room went silent in shock when we (the United States delegates) offered the statistic of 25,000 chimney fires per 2014 numbers in the United States and roughly 500 deaths from carbon monoxide according to a quick google search. Unfortunately, the United States had much greater numbers in both categories.

Technical classes: The next day started with a presentation named fire safety of chimneys and fireplaces. The presentation was more on how they test metal chimneys, similar to our UL testing. I found, in most situations, what we call woodstoves, are called fireplaces to them.

The next presentation was in quality requirements for wood fuels and the effects on their emissions. Different sized wood has different classes. Moisture content should be 15 to 20 percent for fireplaces and 15 to 25 percent for boilers. Firewood cutting and delivery is a true science to ensure the most efficient burn.

The most important factor of emissions volume is combustion conditions.

Workgroups: We broke up into groups for some more live and hands on related training. Here are some notes I took from the class stations we visited.

Hybrid heating:

If moisture is lower than 12 or higher than 20 particulate emissions increase. Of course the highest emissions happening with wetter wood. The smaller diameter wood appears to increase emissions. Also, a low load increases emissions. This is likely due to the combustion air being decreased since the fire is burning hotter. It can also happen because even if you have more combustion air, the chimney overdrafts and draws more burnt ash out of the system. Top down burns, when tested, were higher in emissions than bottom up burns. There is more CO produced from bottom up burns. A large focus is on

burning using wood chips. Wood chips are a popular heating source, similar to pellet stove technology. All emissions are analyzed to help reduce harmful emissions in the country.

On break, I purchased Finnish chimney sweep hats with the Finnish logo on them. It's amazing how much chimney sweep gear and collectibles are available in Europe.

The final classroom presentation of the day was on emissions of wood burning. They showed what microscopic particulates look like and how they can attach to our body hair. It was stressed all particulate properties have effects on

Fireplace and chimney inspection: The Finnish chimney sweeps use the following service system: 1. Visual 2. Pressure test of chimney and room. Block both ends of chimney. Foam and plastic are used to block the ends. A pressure testing machine is then used to pressurize the chimney to check for chimney leakage.

3. A smoke test to check tightness is then used if the pressure test fail. Sometimes instead of the smoke test, they will perform a video scan. Both help find leak or failure.

4. Function test. The technician will also use a meter and probe to check flue gasses.

Technicians can access the systems from the internet to check function. The heat exchangers are in cabinets. The

This was a very relaxing and humbling experience, almost spiritual. Saunas are a popular activity the Finnish take part in.

The last day is spent visiting different sites relative to the chimney industry. We got to visit a company that produces businesses evolution over the years, featuring some of the first sauna units the company produced.

The afternoon was spent on a cruise boat for lunch and a tour of the largest lake in Finland.

The air was chilly, but the view was spectacular. Most families have a lake house for weekend get aways and relaxation.

Nearly every family owns a sauna in their home.

Gifts were given at the evening gala with speeches of gratitude and appreciation of the Finnish hospitality. It is always so great to see and make new friends.

It makes it particularly special when they are from completely other countries on the other side of the world. Experiencing their cities and culture is a special gift our industry has given me. For this, I am thankful.

Ashley Eldridge to Retire as NCSG and CSIA Education Director The National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) and the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) have announced the retirement of longtime Director of Education, Ashley Eldridge at the end of 2017.

CSIA President Chuck Hall, owner of Winston’s Chimney in Fairfax, VA called Eldridge an “industry icon” and that his “knowledge and commitment to our industry, will be sorely missed.”

Mr. Eldridge began his role with the NCSG and CSIA in 1993 after operating his own successful chimney service company and founding the Virginia Chimney Sweep Guild (now the MidAtlantic Chimney Association). During his tenure both organizations oversaw continued industry growth while successfully meeting the challenges of modernization in technology in training in

the chimney service industry. Accomplishments during his time include: the opening of the CSIA Technology Center, the creation of new courses, and the introduction and expansion of the many online course offerings of the CSIA. Additionally, Mr. Eldridge was instrumental in the creation of the Certified Dryer Vent Technician® certification.

“Ashley Eldridge, the name says it all. He has forgotten more about chimneys than I will ever know. His dedication to teach others is remarkable. He didn't want us just to pass a test, he wanted us to go out and be successful and save homes and lives. I've looked up to Ashley most of my life, I really appreciated his ability to look beyond the black and white on the paper and work in the area of common sense. I’d like to thank him for his service to the National Chimney Sweep Guild and this industry,” said NCSG President Jasper Drengler.

From his many television appearances, Mr. Eldridge has served as an industry ambassador for much of his tenure with the organizations.

Most notably, in 2005, he represented CSIA on Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe, in addition to countless print and radio interviews. Eldridge leaves the industry as a Don Leavitt Education Award recipient and the only twotime NCSG President’s Award winner.

he first step to financial security is understanding how to calculate your hourly rate to meet your salary goal and cover all expenses including your retirement package. Always include administrative costs, overhead expenses, job materials/supplies and a retirement savings account deduction.

Where to Start?

Typically, there are 2000 hours in a work year.

If your goal is an annual salary of $100,000.00 per year, you divide by 2000 which equals $50.00 per hour. (2000 x $50.00 = $100,000.00) You must also realize that it nearly impossible to bill 8 to 9 hours a day of actual work time to a client. Most service companies find that 50 % of the time is spent as “windshield time” and or managing clients and administrative duties. This then actually means you will need to charge $100.00 hour to realize a $100,000.00 per year salary since 50% of your work time is non billable hours to a client.

Now that you have your rates set and have an automatic retirement deduction plan accounted for in your pricing, you can now determine the best plan for you.

Retirement Plans can have great tax advantages.

Contributions are deductible and grow tax deferred until distribution at retirement age, ie. lower tax bracket. The three most popular plans are 401(K) plans, SEP IRAs and Simple IRAs. Traditional 401(k)s may not be effective because of the IRAs “top heavy testing” rules that may disqualify management’s and ownership’s contributions. However, there are alternatives to 401(k)s which allow all owners and management to contribute to creating tax deferred compensation as well as allowing the company a tax deduction without the income testing that shackles the good intentions of the owners and management.

A Safe Harbor 401(k) may be a good fit for chimney service companies as some key

benefits are not annual discrimination tested (high vs low compensated employees), minimum contribution and maximum employee contribution of $18,000.00 with additional $6,000.00 for those over 50 years old.

most cases traditional 401(k) plans in home service firms, result in significant restrictions on the owners and managers. SIMPLE IRAs and SEPS bypass those restrictions and are easier to administer and less costly.

Another avenue is a Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRA.

Failing to plan for retirement is planning to fail in your golden years so please start now the future is near.

A SIMPLE IRA is a good way to capture most of the benefits of a retirement plan without the administrative costs and hassles. These are for companies with 100 or less employees who do not maintain any other retirement plan. The maximum contribution is $12,500.00 with an additional $3,000 for those over the age of 50. The employer must match 100% of the employee first 3% of compensation. However, each employee decides what they want to contribute to the plan.

I have only hit some of the high points of each plan and this will not make you and expert and you should always consult with a financial professional to determine which plan is right for you.
