Have you ever visited a place or space and experienced a sense of familiarity, empowerment, joy or purpose? That feeling of intense emotion is often the outcome for visitors to the National Civil Rights Museum. As you walk up to the Museum, there is a power of place that was the Lorraine Motel. There is a power of place where history – both positive and tragic – occurred. And today, there is a power of place where history continues to be made through the presence of our visitors; the purpose of our guest lecturers, authors, speakers and filmmakers; and the participation of each of you. Power can be defined in different ways, but for purposes of this report we are talking, not about controlling power but the power that endows authority, capacity and influence. That power comes from knowledge. We take advantage of power of place by creating a platform that emphasizes learning and presents those who engage with opportunities to learn, grow and act. And, it is through those very actions that the collective can create momentum, forward movement and progress. With every passing year, it becomes more and more evident that the mission of the National Civil Rights Museum is one that is ever-green. While some of the challenges faced by our predecessors no longer present obstacles, far too many of the stories chronicled in this place continue to plague people of color and marginalized populations. Thus, the platform afforded by the National Civil Rights Museum provides the space to grow in knowledge and understanding. It is the power that resides within this place that encourages us to keep moving forward! Terri Lee Freeman President
