Forty-nine apprentices from twelve NCMCA member firms competed in the 2021 Samuel A. McGee Memorial Apprentice Masonry Apprentice Skills Contest in May in front of more than three hundred volunteers and spectators at McGee Brother Company in Midland. Grant Helms of Helms Masonry is the new champion and takes home the “David R. Sigmon Award” for “top-score” in the competition. Grant built a rare “perfect project” with no deductions for a perfect score. The “top-ten” finishers in addition to Helms were Mason Saunders, Second Place, Huntley Brothers Company; Cyress Lance Brown, Third Place, McGee Brothers Company; Christian Kluttz, Fourth Place and Bayden Huntley, Fifth Place of Huntley Brothers Company; Anderson Pruett, Sixth Place, Helms Masonry; Carter McGee, Seventh Place, McGee Brothers Company; Salvador Cruz De Leon, Eighth Place, Creative Masonry; Maria Torres, Ninth Place, Carolina Masonry Unlimited; and Annayeli Dionisio, Tenth Place, Fred Mason’s Masonry. The 2022 contest is set for Saturday May 21st at Adams/Oldcastle in Colfax.
