ZAMBIA PROJECT UPDATE Building Food Security Through Local Communities in Zambia In communities across northern Zambia, small-scale farmers face ongoing challenges in producing enough food to meet their families’ needs. Changing weather patterns, limited access to resources, and reliance on traditional farming methods can make harvests uncertain, leaving families vulnerable during periods of food shortage. Strengthening farmers’ ability to adapt to these challenges is an important step toward greater food security and stability. Through the Integrated Food Security and Resilience Project, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is working alongside local churches, community leaders, government partners, and farmers to build long-term resilience. The project organizes farmers into groups that will support future financial literacy and community savings activities. Farmers are receiving training in climate-smart agriculture practices, including conservation farming and crop diversification, while also learning about climate-related risks and household preparedness.
Your Impact: Growing Knowledge, Strengthening Communities
John Chomba is gaining new knowledge and practical farming skills through the project, giving him hope for better harvests and greater stability for his family.
Planting Seeds of Hope: John’s Story Training in climate-smart agriculture practices reached 120 farmers.
Orientation sessions equipped 10 local churches to address climate risks and agricultural needs.
For John Chomba, producing enough food for his family has not always been easy. Traditional farming methods often resulted in harvests that did not last until the next season, making food security a constant concern for his family. Through the project, John is learning practical farming methods that can help him improve how he grows food and better prepare for changing conditions. The knowledge and skills he has gained have given him hope that future harvests will provide more consistent food and better nutrition for his family.
The project and the surrounding community was strengthened through two new local partnerships.
10 farmer groups representing 100 farmers were formed to help improve financial literacy and community savings.
“These changes are important because they give me the ability to provide for my family with dignity and stability,” John shared. “In the future, the knowledge and skills I’ve gained will help me sustain higher yields, improve our income, and ensure that my children grow up with greater opportunities and security.”
