L atinos and H ealth Coverage: A laska by the Numbers L atinos1 are more likely to be uninsured than any other racial or ethnic group in the U.S. +RZHYHU +LVSDQLF IDPLOLHVœ DFFHVV WR KHDOWK LQVXUDQFH YDULHV E\ VWDWH (see F igure 1). In A laska: ™ L atinos have inadequate access to the cur rent health coverage system. In 2008, only about two-fifths (39.2%) of all Latinos living in Alaska had employer-sponsored health insurance, and about one-sixth (17.4%) were covered by Medicaid or the &KLOGUHQœV +HDOWK ,QVurance Program.2 ™ As a result, L atino families are at risk for uninsurance. That year, almost one in six (15.7%) Latinos in Alaska were uninsured, including 1.9% of Latino children under age 18 with no form of health coverage.3 ™ L atinos are a small but critical share of the uninsured. Hispanics made up 4.3% of the total state population in 2008 and represented 3.4% of AlaskaœV uninsured.4
