CALIFORNIA OUTDOORS Q&A

How Many Bear Species Live In California? California Bears Q: I live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and a neighbor of mine said she’s seen a grizzly bear in the wild. Is that possible? A: Black bears are the only wild bears in California. However, they do come in many different colors from solid black to shades of brown and tan. Some have different patches of color such as a white blaze on the chest or lighter colored muzzles. Many people will claim to have seen a “brown bear.” Generally, the term “brown bear” refers to Ursus arctos, the grizzly bear. California grizzly bears were hunted to extinction by the 1920s and only the one on our state flag remains. There are two subspecies of black bears recognized in California: The northwestern or Olympic black bear (Ursus americana altifrontalis) in the northwest corner of California, and the California black bear (Ursus americana californiensis) throughout the rest of California. They are thought to be geographically distinguished from each other by the crest of the Klamath Mountains. California’s black bear pop-
6
ulation is robust and has increased over the past 25 years. Since the extinction of the California grizzly, black bears have been able to expand throughout much of the state as they no longer face direct competition from the larger bear species.
Songbird Outbreak Q: Earlier this year I read about the salmonellosis outbreak causing songbird deaths in several areas throughout the state. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) asked the public to remove birdfeeders to reduce disease transmission. What’s the status of the outbreak? Can we use our birdfeeders again? A: The good news is that the salmonellosis outbreak appears to have subsided and it’s probably safe to resume feeding if residents choose to do so. However, CDFW would like residents to continue keeping an eye on feeders because there have been reports of a bacterial infection in house finches. The infection, Avian Mycoplasmosis, causes swollen eyes and an upper respiratory infection. Sick birds may act similar
to those infected with salmonellosis. Mycoplasmosis spreads readily at bird feeders, especially tube feeders that require birds to reach their head into the hole to grab seeds. Because of these new reports, CDFW is asking residents to remain vigilant in monitoring feeders and bird baths. If sick or dead birds are seen at the feeders or bird baths, they should be removed for at least three to four weeks. This will hopefully encourage the birds to feed on more natural foods and slow the spread of any infections. Also, it’s generally recommended that bird feeders and bird baths are thoroughly cleaned outdoors at least once a week, and more often if there is heavy use by birds.
SHARE Program Q: If I draw a SHARE program elk tag, does the landowner also charge a fee? A: No. CDFW’s SHARE program provides public access to land for hunting and fishing. Since it is a public access program, what you’re drawing for is essentially an access permit. Landowners

utilizing the program are in contract with CDFW. Therefore, hunters who draw a tag do not pay fees for accessing the land. This fall, SHARE is offering 92 elk tags during 60 hunts on 40 properties, including on five new properties. If drawn for an elk hunt, your expenses would be the tag and a non-refundable application fee. You can apply for a SHARE elk hunt from June 16 through July 24. Emotional Support Ferret Q: I know ferrets are usually illegal to own as pets, but can I get a permit to have one as an emotional support animal? A: No. Ferrets (Family Mustelidae) are classified as a restricted species in the state of California, pursuant to California Code of Regulations (CCR), title 14, section 671. For this reason, it is unlawful to import, transport or possess ferrets (or any other restricted species) in California, except under a permit issued by CDFW. Permit conditions and requirements are established in California restricted species regulation (CCR, title 14, section 671.1). There are no provisions in this section that would authorize CDFW to issue a permit for the purpose of importing, transporting or possessing a ferret or other restricted species animals for emotional support purposes. Therefore, ferrets cannot be possessed as emotional support animals in California. For more information about restricted species laws and regulations in California, please visit https://wildlife.ca.gov/ Licensing/Restricted-Species. ✦ If you have a question you would like to see answered in the California Outdoors Q and A column, email it to CalOutdoors@wildlife.ca.gov.

10 Refreshed Etiquette Tips for Today’s Wedding Attendees (statepoint) Even before the pandemic, wedding etiquette was tricky. After a year like no other, the dos and don’ts around “I do’s” and being a good guest have become even more complicated. Some protocols remain true. Do RSVP quickly. Don’t be late to the main event. Others are less clear. Should you send a gift for virtual ceremonies? What’s the best way to greet others at in-person events? Hilton, a global hospitality company that hosts thousands of weddings annually, encourages travelers to make new memories and reconnect this summer. And to help you maintain perfect wedding guest status, they’ve partnered with international etiquette expert Diane Gottsman to provide these tips: 1. Put a stamp on it: Even if the invite says you have months to respond, it’s best to reply within one week. Waiting too long is a sign you are hesitant. 2. Dress to impress: Let the suggested attire on the invitation or couple’s website be your guide. Still unclear? Reach out to the hosts. As a general rule, dress up rather than down to show you put thought into the event. Finally, don’t wear white. It’s reserved for the bride. 3. Honor air hugs: “Everyone has a different comfort level with closeness right now,” says Gottsman. “Pay attention to non-verbal cues. If someone reaches out for a handshake, hug or fist-bump, reciprocate if you feel comfortable. If you’re not ready for physical contact, offer another friendly gesture, such as a heartfelt nod. It’s okay to pull back, smile and say cheerfully: ‘I can’t wait until I feel comfortable with hugs; I’m just not there yet.’” 4. Know posting protocol: Unless the couple guides you otherwise, “They get the right to post the first photos on

social media,” says Gottsman. If they encourage you to post at will, it’s A-OK to share your snaps. Use provided hashtags and remember that the official wedding photographer and videographer get first dibs on great shots. 5. Stash your smartphone: Use your phone to take photos, but once you’re done, tuck it away. It’s potentially distracting for you and off-putting for others. 6. Get accustomed with other customs: Before attending a wedding incorporating cultural customs unfamiliar to you, do some pre-nuptial prep. “Every culture has different customs,” says Gottsman. “Knowing how to dress, how to gift and what to expect is the responsibility of a good guest.” 7. Connect with courtesy. If staying at a hotel with friends and family, keep courtesy top-of-mind. For instance, if you booked connecting rooms through Hilton’s new Confirmed Connecting Rooms by Hilton option, “Think about how often you’ll spend time together and when you’ll keep the connecting doors shut and open,” says Gottsman. While you and your roomies may embrace the up-all-night slumber party vibe, nearby guests may not. Keep the volume down and the fun contained to your cozy cove of connecting rooms. To book two or more connecting

guest rooms ahead of a wedding or summer reunion trip, visit Hilton.com/ ConnectingRooms. 8. Duck debate: “Conversation will no doubt turn to hot topics, like politics, religion and vaccines. A gracious guest will make every effort to steer clear of volatile debate,” says Gottsman. 9. Give comfortably: The first etiquette rule: send a gift, even if you can’t make the event. The second: don’t feel pressured to give more than is comfortable. Gone are the days when guests are expected to cover their per-head cost. Not sure what’s appropriate? Follow the registry. Cash and checks are great alternatives as well. 10. Get glam for the cam: Attending virtually? Grab the suit instead of sweats. “The same courtesies apply,” says Gottsman. “RSVP swiftly, dress for the occasion, arrive on time, show your smiling face and send a gift. Even if it’s virtual, a wedding is a celebration and time to reconnect.”F

Are You Getting Enough Fresh Air?

(statepoint) Fresh air is essential for mental and physical well-being. However, Americans on average spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors, according to the Environmental SoHumAgency. Protection Here are some great tech tools that can help you incorporate more outdoor hobbies into your life, as well as reimagine traditionally indoor activities: • Work al fresco: Still working remotely? A few adjustments can allow you to take your labors out of the house. SoHum Whether you’re on your own patio or enjoying a coffee shop’s sidewalk tables, be sure to sit in the shade, or use an an antiglare screen or screen filter for your laptop. to your regular indoor setup. • Play music anywhere: Whether you’re a budding musician or a seasoned virtuoso, consider portable instruments that you can take with you everywhere you go. For example, the lightweight 9-pound design of the CT-S1 keyboard from Casio is powered with six AA batteries and features strap pins that make it a go-anywhere piano. Powerful and versatile, it’s a great choice for practice and performance alike. • Make a picnic lunch: There’s nothing more pleasant than a picnic lunch, that is, until the bugs get wind of the party. While bug spray most certainly works, you can forgo the spritz — and the DEET — by using a portable, batteryoperated, bug repellent device instead.
• Go fishing: New wearable tech can transform your fishing hobby, offering you all the right tools you need for a successful trip. The Pro Trek line of watches from Casio equip you with sensor technology that can help guide you to your destination with a built-in compass, reach new heights with an altimeter and show you where the fish are biting with A FISH IN TIME feature. Fish icons indicate catch probability throughout the day and a new alarm feature automatically counts down the time remaining until the next good catch period. Thanks to new tools and gadgets, spending time outdoors is easier and more comfortable and convenient than ever before. ✦

rated. Season with salt, to taste. To make fried lobster tails: Preheat grill to 400 F and add oil to 10-inch castiron pan about ½-inch deep. In medium bowl, whisk flour, ¼ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, garlic powder and smoked paprika until well incorporated. Set aside. In separate medium bowl, whisk egg, water and hot pepper sauce. Set aside. In third medium bowl, whisk potato chips, panko breadcrumbs and parsley until well incorporated. Set aside. Cut lobster tails in half lengthwise, remove meat from shell and season with remaining kosher salt and black pepper. Toss halved lobster tails in flour mixture first, egg mixture second then potato chip mixture third, coating thoroughly. Fry lobster tails 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Close grill lid between flipping. To make cheeseburgers: Preheat grill to 450 F using direct heat. Form ground beef into two ½ pound patties, each about ½-inch thick. Using thumb, make dimple in center of each patty to help cook evenly. Season both sides of burger with salt and pepper, to taste. Spread butter on each cut side of buns. Grill burgers 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add one slice cheddar cheese on each burger, close lid and grill about 30 seconds to melt cheese. Remove patties from grill to clean plate. Place buns cut sides down on grill grates and toast 2030 seconds, or until well toasted, being careful to avoid burning. To assemble: Place desired remoulade on buns. Place cheeseburgers on bottom buns. Top each with two fried lobster tail halves. Place handful shredded lettuce on lobster tails. Top with buns. ✦

GARDENING
Lady beetles are one of the good guys, helping to control populations of aphids and other harmful insect pests in the garden. MelindaMyers.com
Managing Insects on Vegetables and Herbs by Melinda Myers
Homegrown fresh vegetables not only taste better; they are more nutritious. Plus, you can control what products are applied to the plants to control insect pests and disease. The first steps to growing a productive vegetable garden and protecting your harvest begin with proper planning and care. Select the most disease-resistant varieties available when planning your garden. Then plant them in properly prepared soil with the amount of sunlight they require. Provide the necessary ongoing care and your plants will be healthier and better able to tolerate

pest problems. Even when you do everything right; problems can still arise. It’s just a part of gardening. Further reduce the risk with regular visits to the garden. Check along the stems and under the leaves for any clues that insect pests have moved into your garden. It is much easier to manage small populations of harmful pests than after they have had time to rapidly reproduce. At the same time, look for lady beetles, green lace wings and other good guys that eat a variety of garden pests. Leaving a few pests to attract these good
guys is often an easy, yet effective way to manage the harmful ones. Enlist the help of songbirds by attracting them with birdbaths and feeders. Many birds supplement their diets with insect protein. Just protect young seedlings as many birds also like fresh greens. If you need to lend nature a hand, remove small populations of insects by hand or use a strong blast of water to knock aphids and mites off plants. This is often enough to manage the damage and minimize their impact on your garden harvest. Barriers of floating row covers can

keep cabbage worms, onion maggots, Japanese beetles, and some other insects from laying eggs on their favorite plants. Cover the plants with the fabric at planting, anchor the edges and leave enough slack for plants to grow. Uncover flowering plants as soon as blossoms appear if bees are needed for pollination. Set out yellow bowls filled with soapy water. The yellow attracts aphids and some other harmful pests. The insects gravitate toward the yellow, then crash into the soapy water and die. If the problem insects are winning the battle, you may be tempted to reach for chemical controls. Instead, look for the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) certification on product labels. This independent non-profit organization reviews products for use in organic gardens, production, and processing. Summit Year-Round Spray Oil (SummitResponsibleSolutions.com) is an OMRI-certified product labeled for use on fruits and vegetables as well as ornamentals. It controls mites, aphids, thrips, and other insects and can be applied right up to the day of harvest. As always, read and follow label directions for any organic, natural, or synthetic chemical used. Heeding label directions ensures safe application and effective control. By working with nature and investing some time and creativity you can safely minimize insect problems and maximize your garden’s harvest. F Melinda Myers has written more than 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening. She hosts The Great Courses “How to Grow Anything” DVD series and the nationally-syndicated Melinda’s Garden Moment TV & radio program. Myers is a columnist and contributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine and was commissioned by Summit for her expertise to write this article. Myers’ web site is www.MelindaMyers.com.

Are You Growing the Right Type of Grass?
Landscape designer, Doug Scott.
(StatePoint) Choosing the right type of grass optimizes the chances that your lawn will be healthy, beautiful and easy to maintain. However, experts say that there are many factors to consider. “You may have your heart set on a specific type of grass because of where you grew up or because the Joneses down the street have a beautiful lawn and they grow XYZ grass. But what’s best for your lawn depends on where you live now and your growing conditions,” says landscape designer Doug Scott of Redeem Your Ground in Atlanta, Ga. A free video series from Exmark, a leading manufacturer of lawn care equipment, can help you master your lawn. In a recent Exmark

Original video, “Done In A Weekend, Grass 101,” Scott discusses the various benefits, maintenance needs and other considerations of each grass type. Here he shares some top factors to keep in mind: • Climate: Grasses are typically divided into two temperature categories: warm-season and cool-season. Warmseason grasses grow best in hot, southern climates reaching 80 to 95 degrees, and go dormant when temperatures consistently drop below 65 degrees. Species like Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bahia and Centipede all grow best in hot, humid regions, whereas Bermuda grass grows best in hot, arid areas. On the other side of things are cool-season grasses, which grow best in northern regions where temperatures fall between 60-70 degrees. Species include tall and fine Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass and annual and perennial Ryegrass. Living in the middle, in what’s known as the “Transitional Zone” can be both

a blessing and a curse. On the positive side, you may have more grass choices, but on the downside, cool-season grasses may look worn-out by late summer, and warm-season grasses will be dormant longer. • Sun and Shade: While there are exceptions, warm-season grasses generally grow best in full sun areas getting 8 or more hours of direct sunlight daily, and cool-season grasses grow best in moderate or medium shade areas getting between 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. You may notice that no one talks about “full shade” -- areas getting less than 4 hours of sunlight daily -- when discussing grass. That’s because there’s no grass that thrives in these conditions. • Water: Different types of grass need different amounts of water to thrive. Warm-season grasses tend to be more drought-tolerant and require less water. • Use: Heavy-turf grass like Zoysia or Bermuda stand up to activity best, whereas cool-season grasses typically
don’t do well in high-traffic areas where children play or dogs run. • Maintenance: What’s required to maintain a healthy lawn also deserves consideration. In general, cool-season grasses cost less to install but more to maintain. Because they don’t form that dense carpet-like structure that heatloving grasses do, cool-season grasses need to be watered and tended more. For more tips, visit Exmark.com/ Backyard. Exmark’s Backyard Life is a multimedia destination focused on helping homeowners make the most of their backyard. While visiting the site, you can also access other Exmark Original Series, including “Done-In-A-Weekend Projects”, “Prime Cuts” and “Dream Yards” videos. By understanding your property’s growing conditions and a bit about grass types, you’ll be well-positioned to select the best grass for your needs and lifestyle. F

8’ x 8’ x 20’ Hi, this is for his 1/4 S ad. Last time we ran it you used the hole driller in ad. He really doesn't like that in his brush ad. He changed some of the wording ("lawns" instead of LIFTS GENERATORS & "water features"). Could we use maybe more WOOD CHIPPERS trees/brush for background if we don't have a big industrial looking trimmer?

there’s something about the freedom of a motorcycle ride … the wind blowing through your hair, passing mere cars at light speed, mosquitoes splattered against your grin. I guess that was why. But why would ol’ Dingle let Dewey Decker take his motorcycle out for a spin? “Hey, I was right there,” Dingle said later. “I told him not to go past the neighbor’s mailbox, and I’d shown him how to run the thing. It’s not like he wasn’t supervised.” But Dewey? The problem is, Dewey has … occurrences. A Dewey Occurrence (and the

CROSSWORD by David Levinson Wilk
capital letters are on purpose here) normally consists of something so out of the ordinary happening to him that it would be virtually impossible to happen to someone else. Like the time he got his father’s pickup truck stuck in the mud. During a drought. In the only mud puddle in the county. If Dewey drove a car in the Indianapolis 500, it would be hit … by a meteor. If Dewey took the podium to conduct the high school band on the football field at half time, the podium would disappear into quicksand. If Dewey had been a soldier in World War II, we’d all be speaking German. So allowing Dewey to ride a motorcycle … even as far as the neighbor’s mailbox … comes perilously close to being a crime against humanity. You don’t really think of accidents happening at less than five miles an hour. Not usually. But I understand Dingle’s motorcycle can be fixed, Dewey only has to wear the cast for six weeks, and the neighbor was tired of that mailbox, anyway. The nurse down at the emergency room said she calls them “donorcycles.” F Brought to you by The Fly Fisherman’s Bucket List by Slim Randles, from Rio Grande Books, and now available at Amazon.com.
