CALIFORNIA OUTDOORS Q&A
Tips for Mentoring Youth Hunters Mentoring Youth Hunters Q: I’m taking my nephew out for his first turkey hunt on some property I have access to. His sister wants to join but doesn’t have a hunting license. I’m wondering what limitations she might have so a game warden doesn’t think she’s hunting too. For example, can she be in camo with us given that we’re only letting my nephew shoot? A: First and foremost, thank you for being a mentor to a youth hunter, and possibly two! You’re a critical link to the future of hunting. We believe that a first-time hunter’s success in taking wild game, cooking and processing it, and sharing with family, is an incredibly empowering moment—especially for youth. For your niece, making sure she doesn’t possess a method of take – as in a shotgun or archery equipment – should be top priority. This will help avoid creating the impression that she’s hunting.
If your nephew is in sole possession of the shotgun for the entire duration of the hunt, your niece can be with you. Note that she should not assist with set up, decoy placement, or calling. However, by simply being there as a non-hunter, you can teach them both the intricacies of a successful turkey hunt. If successful, you can walk them through the plucking and cleaning process. From there we suggest you encourage them both to learn to cook the turkey and plan the meal. You can also help them work through the disappointment at the end of a day if your nephew is not successful, another important lesson about hunting. Turkey hunting is challenging enough for experienced hunters, so hunting with first timers, especially kids, presents its own challenges. As you are probably aware, one of the most important strategies of turkey hunting is
keeping still. Kids often have a difficult time keeping still, but teaching them will significantly increase the chances of a successful hunt. The best way to keep your apprentice hunters still is often to keep them as comfortable as is reasonably possible. We suggest using a ground blind that all three of you can fit in. Ground blinds help conceal excessive movement and they come with reasonably comfortable chairs. There are lots of online resources and other tips you may want to review to make your hunt successful. One of them is CDFW’s Guide To Hunting Wild Turkeys in California, which is free to download on our Upland Game Bird Hunting page. Good luck!
Crab Loop Traps Q: Can two crab loop traps be used simultaneously on one fishing pole? Can a fishing hook be attached to a fishing line that has a crab snare on the end?

California Outdoors Q&A ← CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
A: As for your first question, yes it is legal to have two crab loop traps used simultaneously on one fishing pole. However, if you’re on a public pier, no person shall use more than two rods and lines, two hand lines, or two nets, traps or other appliances used to take crabs, per California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 14, section 28.65(b). Section 29.80 of CCR, Title 14, covers what gear can be used to take crabs and other crustaceans. A hook is not a legal method of take for crabs. If you’re going to use crab loop traps, you’ll need to tie the trap onto the line instead of using a hook. In conclusion, you can either have two poles with one loop trap tied on each, or one pole with two loop traps. As for your second question, the answer is no. You cannot attach a fishing hook to a fishing line that has a crab loop trap on the end because hook and line is not a legal method of take for crabs, per CCR, Title 14, section 29.80.
Crossbows Q: Can I use a crossbow to hunt wild turkey? A: Yes, you may use a crossbow to hunt wild turkey during the regular season but not during the archery only season. With an exception for those issued a disabled archer permit, section 354(g) of CCR, Title 14, states that crossbows may not be used to take game birds and game mammals during archery seasons, including the wild turkey archery season. For additional information regarding archery equipment and crossbow regulations, see CCR, Title 14, section 354. Also, it’s not just the bow that is defined, section 354© requires hunting arrows and crossbow bolts to be tipped with a broad head type blade which will not pass through a hole seven-eighths inch in diameter. Mechanical/retractable broad heads shall be measured in the open position. F

Exterior Decorating
Your patio will be more enticing if you have beautiful sliding glass patio doors leading to it. If you do go in for this upgrade, it’s important to know that patio doors can be customized in a number of ways that affect their look and function. To help you make sense of your options, shop with manufacturers that offer visualizer tools, such as the one available at ProVia, provia.com/ app. This can help you see what colors and hardware look best in your home and find the combination you like best. Their Aeris wood and vinyl sliding doors, for example, offer many customization opportunities, including wood stain finishes, interior and exterior colors; options for internal grids and internal blinds; and a wide array of decorative glass, privacy glass and tinted glass options. Boost comfort and ambiance by applying the same attention to detail when decorating your patio as you would indoors. Beyond furniture that’s comfortable enough to lounge on all day or evening, incorporate throws, pillows and even rugs. Add splashes of color and vibrancy by hanging outdoor wall art, or, if you’re feeling extra creative, painting a mural. Paper lanterns hung above your patio dining area can bring a touch of romance to meals enjoyed outdoors. And get inspired by the nature around you by ensuring your patio features greenery. Potted and hanging plants or even ivy, jasmine or roses grown against a wall or all good choices.

For example, the choices available from ProVia are artfully crafted to produce a realistic, dramatic effect, mimicking stones from unique geographic regions in a range of cuts. Here are some insights into how to use it, plus additional measures you can take for a safe, healthy summer with pets. • Fireworks and T hunder: Unexpected noises can be extremely frightening for pets, causing what’s known as situational stress. If possible, try administering Calming CBD-infused Edibites, which contains soothing and relaxing properties, about an hour before you expect fireworks or thunderstorms to occur. (Helpful hint: it can also be used to relieve situational stress associated with travel, guests, etc.) Exercise also helps. Whether you take an extra long walk or play fetch, wearing your pet out earlier in the day might help them stay calm or even sleep through noise disruptions. Additionally, you can prepare by setting up a quiet space for your pet, full of their favorite blankets and toys. Finally, be mindful that pets often react to loud noises by running away. According to the ASPCA, one-in-five pets that go missing run off after hearing loud noises like fireworks.

Bring cats indoors during storms and fireworks. If you must take a dog outside, keep them securely leashed. Microchips and up-to-date ID tags can help you safely reunite with your pet should they go missing. • Heat: If you’re sweating, there’s a good chance your pet is too. Keep pets hydrated by constantly refilling their bowls with fresh, clean water. Choose mornings or evenings for exercising with dogs to avoid the hottest part of the day. On scorchers, avoid paw-to-pavement contact, letting your dog walk in the grass instead. If your pup’s paws do get affected by the hot pavement, applying a topical CBD solution such as Canna

Care from Pet Releaf can help relieve the burn. Finally, beat the heat with regular grooming -- however, don’t shave your pet’s fur -- their coat protects them from sunburn. • Allergies: Allergies can wear pets down in numerous ways, including weakening their immune system. CBD hemp oil however can offer an immunity boost by activating the body’s twoway communication system between the brain and the immune system. A common allergy symptom is rash, which can cause pets to scratch and bite their skin, only worsening irritation. To treat rash, consider using CBD hemp oil to support a healthy inflammatory response and ease stress, along with a topical CBD product to soothe skin irritations. • Hip and Joint Discomfort: Summer may mean an uptick in nature hikes and long days at the dog park. As a result, your dog may experience hip or joint discomfort. Consider adding a beneficial supplement to their everyday regimen, like Hip & Joint Edibites, which contains full-spectrum hemp extract with naturally occurring CBD, along with glucosamine and chondroitin, a combination known to help maintain normal healthy

cartilage and joint function, as well as support joint flexibility and mobility. Depending on your pet’s health needs, you may want to upgrade to a higher potency pet CBD product like a hemp oil that you can massage onto their joints. Unsure which CBD solution will work best for your pet? Check out Pet Releaf ’s Product Finder tool at petreleaf.com/ product-finder, which factors in age, weight, level of discomfort and wellness needs. Use the code RELEAF25 through July 31, 2021 to receive 25% off and free shipping. HOME
DIY Kitchen Makeover Ideas You Can Complete in a Weekend (StatePoint) Whether you’re putting down roots or putting your home on the market, kitchen upgrades make a huge impact. Not only do they have daily “good feeling” appeal for current homeowners, they can offer a great return on investment when it’s time to sell. So it’s no surprise that kitchens were the second leading site of home improvements made since the pandemic, according to Hippos’s recent “State of Homeownership Survey.” Boost your kitchen’s beauty and functionality with these DIY makeover ideas: 1. Countertops. Tired of boring countertops? When using the SpreadStone kit from Daich Coatings, an elegant new finish requires only the ability to paint, roll and sand. Working well on existing laminate, cultured marble, formica and other solid surfaces, the result is a dynamic stone finish that provides shimmering mineral accents and color highlights found in natural mined rock. The three-step process includes applications of a stone base coat, decorative stone coat and stone clear top coat. Finished countertops resist heat, stains, abrasion, impact and household cleaners. Available in 10 colors, including Oyster and Volcanic Black, each kit includes application tools and required coatings to complete 30 to 40 square feet of space. Kits are available online at The Home Depot and at daichcoatings.com. 2. Decorative boards. Add warmth to bars and kitchen islands, or an entire wall, by installing decorative wood boards. The ready-to-install S4S Decorative Boards from Ornamental Decorative Millwork provide a rich, clean appearance and are available in Ambrosia Maple, White Oak, Black Stained Aspen and Gray Stained Aspen

profiles. 3. Track lighting. For a cool look that’s also highly functional, install track lighti n g ab ove all areas of the kitchen where you slice, dice and sauté, or use it to highlight design elements. Kits make installation easy and are available in a range of designs complementing any style. Add specialty lighting in other areas of the kitchen to give the room a warm glow. 4. Floating shelves. Add floating shelves to keep spices handy, hold favorite cookbooks, stack plates or display decorative accent pieces. Lightweight and easy-to-install in just minutes, those from Ornamental Decorative Millwork can be easily painted or stained to complement other design elements in the room. 5. Wood beams. Add architectural style and warmth to your kitchen (or any other room) with lightweight Rustic Beams from Ornamental Decorative Millwork. Whether it’s adding straight beams, creating a center beam with cross beams, or crafting a coffered ceiling, home design creativity knows no bounds with this DIY project. Made of real wood, these pre-stained U-shaped beams and wrought iron metal accent

brackets are available at Lowe’s and come with everything needed for installation. 6. Outdoor kitchen. Building an outdoor kitchen is an amazing way to make better use of your backyard and enjoy fresh air as you cook and dine. Using VertiStone Roll-On Wall Texture, you can ensure the space is beautiful. Without prep work and in little time, you can use it to completely transform any drywall, block, masonry or concrete outdoor kitchen surface in such finishes as smooth polished marble, natural suede, parchment, dream lace and linen. Then, to protect the newly-coated surfaces, simply add Hi-Build Ultra Clear Coat, a tough coating that resists water, U/V rays, chemicals, impact and abrasion. Thanks to a variety of products making DIY easy, you can affordably give your kitchen that “wow factor” in an afternoon or weekend. F

FOOD & ENTERTAINING
A Mouthwatering Wrap with an Avocado Addition (Culinary.net) Sometimes lunch is the most challenging meal of the day. When you wake up before heading to work or accomplishing the morning’s tasks, you might ask yourself, “What should I pack for lunch today?” Lunch is a meal that everyone has different views on. Some enjoy a huge, filling lunch, some skip it altogether and others look for a light, nutritious option. The possibilities are nearly endless when it comes to midday food choices. If you desire crunch and texture, but also something light, you’re likely seeking food that is filling and going to give you enough energy to make it until dinner time. This BLT Wrap with Avocado Spread is a perfect lunchtime pick-me-up that can leave you feeling full and ready to conquer the rest of the day’s work.
This recipe is simple and can be whipped together in minutes. Plus, it has fresh ingredients like lettuce, tomatoes and avocados. Start by cooking eight strips of bacon in a hot skillet. While that’s cooking, slice the tomatoes and cut the lettuce leaves. In a bowl, mash avocado, sour cream, lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and salt with a fork until combined. On a flour tortilla, add avocado spread, one lettuce leaf, tomato slices and bacon. Roll everything up for an on-the-go meal. This recipe is best served with banana peppers and Spanish rice for a nutrient-

filled lunch. It’s always nice to have a little break in the middle of the day, especially with a delicious meal that’ll have you ready to finish the day strong. Find more lunch recipes at Culinary. net.

GARDENING
Planting Tips for Growing Success By Melinda Myers Increase your growing success by giving your transplants a good start with a few simple planting techniques. Preparing them for the transition outdoors and planting properly will help you grow your best garden yet. Transplants started indoors from seed or purchased at a local garden center or greenhouse need time to prepare for their outdoor home. Gradually toughen them up with a procedure called hardening off. This process helps them adjust to the outdoor growing conditions, so plants will suffer less transplant shock and establish more quickly. Start by moving the plants outdoors to a sheltered shady location about one to two weeks before the recommended planting date. Stop fertilizing and water thoroughly when the planting mix is starting to dry. Move plants into an hour of direct sunlight the first day, increasing the time by an hour each day. Make this easier by placing transplants in a wagon, old saucer sled or Gardener’s Supply Garden Cart (gardeners.com). Keep frost protection handy or move plants indoors when frost is in the forecast. Once the plants are hardened off, move them into the garden. Water the planting mix thoroughly the night before planting. If possible, plant in the morning or on a cloudy day to reduce moisture loss and stress on the plants. Follow spacing recommendations on the plant tags to save money and time. You will need fewer plants to fill the space and allow each plant to reach its full potential. Press on the sides of the pot to loosen the roots and carefully slide the plant out of the container. Do not pull the

plant out by the stem or you may end up with all stem and no attached roots. Gently loosen any encircling and tightly bound roots. This encourages the roots to explore the surrounding soil and establish a strong root system. Use fingers to tease apart the roots or a sharp knife to slice through the surface roots in a few places. Plant tomato transplants several inches deeper or set long leggy plants in a trench. This encourages roots to form along the buried stem. Remove the low-
est leaves that will be covered by the soil and loosen the roots on the hardened-off transplant. Dig a shallow trench two to three inches deep. Lay the leggy tomato in the trench and carefully bend the stem so the upper portion remains above ground. Cover the stem with soil and water. Set stakes and towers in place at the time of planting to reduce the risk of damaging roots and stems when trying to secure tall plants. Make sure the

support is strong and tall enough for the plants. Gardener’s Supply Vertex tomato cages and supports are flexible, lightweight and can be installed around established plants without damage. Remove any flowers and fruit on the transplants at the time of planting so plants can direct energy into forming roots, resulting in more flowers and fruit over time. If you cannot bring yourself to do this, try removing flowers on every other plant or row at planting. Do the same to the remaining flowers the following week. Water new transplants often enough to keep the soil moist, but not soggy wet. Water thoroughly and gradually extend the amount of time between watering to encourage deep, more drought-tolerant roots. Adding a layer of shredded leaves, evergreen needles or other organic mulch will help conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve the soil as it decomposes. Implementing these strategies will help increase your enjoyment and reduce maintenance throughout the growing season. ✦ Melinda Myers is the author of more than 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening. 60 Years of Peace Corps: A Look Back (StatePoint) While life around the globe has changed significantly since the Peace Corps was founded 60 years ago, the agency’s mission to promote world peace and friendship between Americans and people around the world has not. Established by President John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961, via Executive Order, the concept for the public service agency was first introduced months prior in an impromptu presidential campaign speech delivered to college students. “How many of you who are going to be doctors, are willing to spend your days in Ghana? Technicians or engineers, how many of you are willing to work in the Foreign Service and spend your lives traveling around the world?” then-Senator Kennedy asked the students. “I think Americans are willing to contribute. But the effort must be far greater than we have ever made in the past.” The response was swift and enthusiastic. Since the Peace Corps’ founding, more than 240,000 Americans have served in 142 host countries. Here’s a look back at some of the agency’s major accomplishments and milestones: • 1961: President Kennedy hosts a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden in honor of the first group of volunteers departing for service. Congress approves legislation for the Peace Corps. The first volunteers arrive in Ghana. • 1977: Carolyn Robertson Payton is appointed Peace Corps Director by President Jimmy Carter. She’s the first female and first African American to serve in this role. • 1985: The Paul D. Coverdell Fellows program, a graduate fellowship program offering financial assistance to returned volunteers, as well as opportunities to continue service in underserved communities, is established. • 1995: The Peace Corps sends volunteers to the Caribbean island of Antigua

to rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Luis. This pilot program, Crisis Corps (now called Peace Corps Response), provides short-term humanitarian service to countries worldwide. • 2005: For the first time, volunteers are deployed domestically when the Peace Corps Response program assists the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s relief operations in the Gulf Coast region following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. • 2007: The Peace Corps Prep program is established, offering an undergraduate certificate program that helps students build skills needed to be effective volunteers, giving them a competitive edge when applying for Peace Corps service. • 2014: For the first time, Peace Corps applicants can choose the programs and countries they apply to, selecting the path that best fits their skills, languages,
and personal and professional goals. • 2016: The Peace Corps gets a makeover with the adoption of a new look and logo. • 2020: The Peace Corps initiates its first global evacuation in its history in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, what’s the status of the Peace Corps today? Currently, the agency is working to return to service and is accepting applications to serve. Interested applicants can connect with a recruiter to learn more and get the application process started by visiting peacecorps. gov. From partnering with local communities, to mitigating the impacts of climate change, to teaching digital literacy, today’s Peace Corps service opportunities look different than they once did; however, they all continue the agency’s original and inspiring mandate to “promote world peace and friendship.” F
