Welcome to Southern Humboldt
I
n Southern Humboldt, the tips of the tallest trees on earth reach for the sky and often find the sunshine. From the Avenue of the Giants to the Southern Humboldt border, ancient redwoods define the landscape and create a magical environment all their own. You see, it’s often sunny in Southern Humboldt and the majesty of the redwood forests combine with the hospitable climes that grace these parts most of the year. Behind what is affectionately known as the Redwood Curtain, the visitor has plenty of options for fun and frolic. Rivers and an ocean await and, with them, hiking, boating, fishing, swimming, surfing, sailing, all ready to be enjoyed. The mystique and wonderland of this region beckon and await. We welcome one and all to come take in the jaw-dropping beauty that makes Sourhern Humboldt a can’t miss destination on anyone’s bucket list. ■ SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT VISITOR GUIDE 3

he unincorporated town of Garberville is located on the South Fork of the Eel River and is 15 minutes from Humboldt Redwoods State Park and a hop skip and a jump from the Avenue the Giants. Behind the Redwood Curtain, Garberville has thrived as a center of activity for farmers and related merchants for more than a century. The town enjoys sunshine and a bustling downtown with local shops and eateries. Garberville town is a gateway to the Avenue of the Giants and Shelter Cove and the Lost
Coast. Old buildings along the main street are being renovated, and the town is getting a face lift. New boutiques, restaurants, and watering holes are opening, as the whole area is going through a metamorphosis. Redway, Garberville’s nextdoor neighbor was founded in 1923 and now acts as the community center for Southern Humboldt. The Mateel Community Center is located in Redway and hosts multicultural events along with performance arts, featuring both local and national scale acts. ■

rganic coffee is roasting in the rural mountains of Southern Humboldt. Just 2 miles off of Highway 101, at the junction of the road to Shelter Cove lies a hidden treasure for any true coffee aficionado. Signature Coffee is a small artisan coffee roaster that still does it the old-fashioned way, in small batches, using the roastmaster’s skills to coax out all the subtle nuances that each variety of coffee has to offer. Once you step through the door, you’ll see a wall of antique coffee memorabilia and photos of coffee being grown in far-off places. A beautiful, small coffee roaster with the classic elegance of steel, chrome and brass takes center stage. This stately beauty is starting to show some wear from 25 years of roasting coffee. Surrounding the roaster are bags of the green coffees that come from Sumatra, Bali, Brazil, Nigaragua, Honduras and Ethiopia. More familiar are coffees from Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico Peru and Kona. Each of these 60- to 70-kilo bags of coffee are certified organic and many are Fair Trade certified. It’s quite impressive to see the difference in size, color and other characteristics based
on where they come from. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of Signature’s roasters tending to a batch of coffee being roasted. These older machines rely on the skills of the roastmaster and it is very much a form of art. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions! Just a few steps ahead is the coffee bar, where you can chose from five different coffees. There is always Signature’s renowned Black Thunder brewed, as well as a medium roast Sumatra. The other coffees rotate daily, including a Limited Edition served on Wednesdays. Their iced coffee is served over coffee ice cubes — no melted diluted coffee here! They also serve tea, yerba maté, and traditionally made Japanese matcha. Pounds of just-roasted coffee line another wall. Many visitors take some home with them. When they drink it at home, they are immediately transported back to the wonder and awe that is Southern Humboldt. The address is 3455 Redwood Drive, Redway CA 95560 and the phone number is 707923-2661. Find their five star rating on Yelp or check out their Facebook page. ■ Karyn Lee-Thomas contributed to this story.

Southern Humboldt and its natural environment intact. The redwood forest, the mighty Pacific Ocean, the Avenue of the Giants and the many towns along the way rely on a clean and safe environment. We are Dog Friendly! There is plenty of open space that visitors and dogs alike can enjoy. Dog friendly lodging is prevalent as well in Southern Humboldt. Dog etiquette is important for you and your pet.
When enjoying wild places with your dog, please: • Be familiar with site specific regulations. • Control your dog. Generally it is best to keep your dog on a leash when exploring wild places. Dogs are not allowed to approach people in a threatening manner or in any way harass people, horses or other dogs. • Keep your dog with you. • Be courteous to others. • Pick up after your dog. Town sidewalks and streets are known as the commons, the public spaces to be used respectfully. Locals and visitors alike are asked to use
common sense and to be considerate and respectful of others in both public and private spaces. Each citizen (local or traveler), is responsible for his/her (and pet’s) impact on the environment of the commons. Individuals should keep gear together and clean up any trash made (cigarette butts, etc.). Dogs must be licensed according to Calfornia Health Code 121690(a). See the Community Services Listings beginning on page 10 for dog licensing information and the Garberville Redway Veterinary Group. ■

aller than a 30-story building. Wider than two cadillacs bumper to bumper. As heavy as an army of elephants. These are just a few descriptions of some of the world’s tallest, widest and heaviest trees. Coast Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) line the Avenue of the Giants and visitors are greeted with an awe-in-

should experience. It is akin to other natural wonders of the world and accessible year-round.
Along the Avenue PHILLIPSVILLE The First stop along the avenue North of Garberville, Phillipsville offers The Chimney Tree a historical insight into
DRIVE THRU TREE PARK the hardiness of ancient redwood trees featuring a 12½-foot diameter room carved from the center (which was burned out in 1914, according to its carved sign of tree stats). Inside, visitors can gaze up “the chimney” 78 feet to the hole where the rest of the tree once continued. The “living” part is technically correct, because redwoods are fierce survivors of fire and other indignities, spawning new offshoots, stalwart branches and trees. See more at www.roadsideamerica. com/story/11271#sthash. tSKJOHrl.dpuf MIRANDA Continuing along, Miranda offers a quaint slice of life and is a great stop for the traveler with lodging, a full service gas and grocery, shops that feature redwood arts and crafts, and dining … a perfect place to stretch your legs and to stock up on provisions. MYERS FLAT One of the long time and most popular attractions on the Avenue is the Shrine Drive Thru-Tree. This is a can’t miss photo op and a memory waiting to happen. Myers Flat also offers a general store and RV
parks and historic lodging opportunites. BURLINGTON The site of Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center. WEOTT offers spectacular camping and pays homage to one of nature’s most ferocious feats of power … flooding. Recent history is shaped by two major floods. In December of 1955, lower Weott was partially destroyed when the South Fork of the Eel River overflowed its banks. The town was largely re-built but In December of 1964 a Pineapple Express, a rare weather phenomenon, created the greatest flood in the recorded history of California’s North Coast. Look carefully at redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants: The trees are marked by the high-water line from a flood in 1964. REDCREST The history of the Avenue is on full display in Red Crest with shopping, camping, RV parking and camping, along with attractions that give insight into the magnificence of the redwood forest. Shelter Cove and the Lost Coast
G
em of the Lost Coast — where the King Range meets the Pacific Ocean: That’s Shelter Cove! Besides the continuous “ahh” moments of stunning Pacific Ocean views, there is much to offer the visitor. For the sportsman, there’s world-famous salmon, cod and halibut fishing. You can charter a boat or launch your own from a paved boat ramp. Set out a crab pot or two offshore and pull up delicious Dungeness crab. Perhaps collect abalone and mussels off the rocks or dig for clams. How about board and body surfing, kayaking, diving and paddle boarding? Explore tide pools, hunt for sea shells, observe sea lions, harbor seals and a multitude of birds, and enjoy a colorful sunrise or sunset. Whale watching is a favorite pastime with the best views from December to May. On shore there’s hiking and biking,
or just taking a stroll on the striking black sand beaches. The BLM manages access to this beach located at the north end of the Cove, offering a parking lot, restrooms and amazing views up the coast. Staying over? Would you like an ocean front room? There’s plenty to choose from. Several vacation rentals are available around the Cove. For pilots, Shelter Cove offers a 3,400-foot runway. A nine hole golf course is available for the intrepid golfer. The community center includes Abalone Hall, 1,200 square feet of venue with a full kitchen available for rent, a bocce ball court, basketball hoop, a sports lawn for volleyball and croquet, and two horseshoe pits. (The District also provides horseshoes, bocce balls, basketballs, volleyballs, and croquet Continued on next page >> SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT VISITOR GUIDE 17

sets.) And don’t forget the playground across the parking lot from the fire station for the kids. A well-stocked general store has just about anything a picnicker, camper, hiker or fisherman might need. The RV park and campground is located in the heart of Shelter Cove, offering a mini-market, full deli, a music pavilion, pull-through RV sites and campsites. There’s handy access to the boat launch area, the beaches and Mal Coombs Park, home of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse. This lighthouse, originally situated 20 miles north, was moved to the Cove and restored in 1998, and adds another layer of history to Shelter Cove. The Park is also managed by the BLM with paved parking, picnic tables,
Be Safe at the Beach Watch the ocean! Large, unpredictable “sneaker” waves can surge up the beach at any time without notice. Never turn your back on the ocean and never attempt to swim or enter the water along this stretch of coastline. The water is very cold and survival is limited to 20 minutes without a wetsuit. The King Range NCA coastline has very strong undertow and rip currents. Check current tide table predictions or visit blm. gov for more information.

barbecues and restrooms. There’s easy access to the west side beach via a sturdy set of stairs. The Cove is surrounded by the magnificent King Range National Conservation Area, some 68,000 acres, with the California Coastal Trail going from end to end along the coast. Hike to the summit of 4,087-foot-high King’s Peak, ride the Paradise Royale mountain bike trail, walk the Lost Coast Trail from the Cove to the mouth of the Mattole River, camp at any of four campgrounds near the Cove. So many opportunities to explore the outdoors! The Lost Coast awaits and getting lost has never been more fun. ■ Shelter Cove resident Mary Ann Machi contributed to this story.

20 SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT VISITOR GUIDE
n the mid-20th century, the “counterculture” was born and, with that, many young Americans were looking for a better way of life away from the mainstream. In California, Southern Humboldt became a destination for folks seeking that new life. Southern Humboldt, known by locals as SoHum, emerged as a haven for the counterculture movement. Today, it is the most renowned cannabis region in the western hemisphere. For more than half a century, cannabis has held a place in here. All the things that make Southern Humboldt a natural wonderland also make it perfect for agriculture. The unique soil characteristics and climate conditions were
recognized early on by farmers as extremely hospitable. If it’s green, it grows, and does so remarkably well. What was counterculture is now a way of life. The cannabis industry grew up here. Humboldt County is to cannabis what France is to wine. Many of the medicinal cannabis strains popular throughout the world were developed here. Science and technology have merged with the spirit of the counterculture movement. Growth techniques that look to preserve the precious land and water resources of the natural environment represent the ideals of the cannabis culture. Residents, farmers, business owners and nonprofit groups are looking

within themselves to restore and improve the local environment and wildlife habitat. With the passage of Prop. 215 and Prop. 64, cannabis is undergoing the next phase of cultural integration into the American mainstream. Southern Humboldt is poised to offer up a legacy, that will shape the history of this region. Southern Humboldt has a happy confluence of entrepreneurial spirit and unparalleled beauty that makes it a destination you won’t want to miss. For more information, contact the Bureau of Medical Cannabis Regulation 800-952-5210, bmcr.ca.gov, or the Humboldt County Planning Cannabis Services Division (707) 268-3795. ■
