‘Shout-out’ Editor: At a time when all the news about government seems so bleak, this is a shoutout to an organization that demonstrated efficient and empathetic service. That organization is: Eureka DMV! I recently had two occasions where I needed to go the DMV. The first was having to remove my late husband’s name from my car registration. I unexpectedly felt emotional having to delete his name, as it felt like one more way he was being erased from my life. The staff kindly helped me through the entire process with minimum waiting time. Next, I needed to get a temporary handicap parking permit. Again, kind, helpful, friendly staff checked the form, made one correction and got me the permit. I want to publicly acknowledge them. The DMV office is also clean and modern. The building and most importantly, the staff, can serve as role models for how government can best serve us. Kathleen Bullard, Ferndale

n Saturday, more than 70 protesters gathered in front of the Humboldt County Courthouse in support of Gilberto “Rudy” Jimenez Gonzalez, 52-year-old Eureka resident detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Wyoming on July 15. Jimenez Gonzalez has lived in the United States for more than 30 years with his wife Luz Moreno and the couple shares five children and two grandchildren. According to Moreno, they were traveling through Rock Springs, Wyoming, when they were stopped by police officers at around 11:15 p.m. due to an issue with their tail light. During the rally, Moreno recounts how the officers asked Jimenez Gonzalez to exit the vehicle and took both of their driver’s licenses. “They [didn’t] give me any information,” she said. “No business cards from the sheriff’s department, no
addresses, no names, no phone numbers, no anything. And I didn’t know what to do in that moment. They told me, ‘Just go home,’ like if it was that easy, you know?” On July 17, a 50501 Humboldt County organizer who goes by AJ was notified of Jimenez Gonzalez’s detainment and immediately sprang into action, directing the Jimenez family to Centro del Pueblo, a local organization dedicated to serving Indigenous migrant communities. According to AJ, while Centro del Pueblo connected the Jimenez family to legal assistance and offered moral support, 50501 Humboldt “handled the protest side of things.” AJ, who was in Biddeford, Maine, when Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero was fatally shot there by ICE agents, says that living in Humboldt County, he often feels disconnected from news of ICE presence in other areas. old delivery driver, husband and father from Colombia — who was not the target of enforcement operation according to media reports — was shot on July 13 and then hearing about Jimenez Gonzalez’s detainment landed hard, AJ says. “I have felt that way with all of the big protests, all of the ICE shootings,” AJ says. “It feels like it’s on the other side of the world and just hearing that it was a Humboldt resident definitely kicked it into
a different gear for me. That feeling is felt throughout the community and people just need to use it as a driving force to come out and support the protest and the family. Because we know that it could be us and it now has been one of us.” During the protest, the Jimenez family handed out homemade signs calling for the release of Jimenez Gonzalez and an end to brutality against immigrants. Eureka/Bayside Food Not Bombs set up a table
where they collected donations and local musicians, including The Raging Grannies, provided entertainment. 50501 Humboldt organizers walked through the crowd asking protesters to spare any change they had for a donation box to support the Jimenez family’s legal expenses. They also asked people to donate to the Jimenez family’s GoFundMe. At the center of the protest were Jimenez Gonzalez’s children and Moreno swathed
in an American flag that split halfway into a Mexican flag. Jimenez Gonzalez’s 21-year-old son Larry recalled the morning he learned that his father had been detained by ICE. “I woke up at five in the morning and I got a text from the family group chat and I thought it was, you know, the good old Facebook reels or something and I opened it and it was just a video of my dad getting detained by ICE,” he says. “I see videos like

t hard not to like The Sound of Music. Rogers and Hammerstein’s instantly recognizable score has inundated popular culture with its catchy melodies and lighthearted joy since its Broadway debut in 1959 and become a musical theater repertoire juggernaut after its 1965 movie debut. Sometimes tunes like “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Every Mountain” and the show’s title song can obfuscate their context in the shadow of the Nazi invasion of Austria. Humboldt Light Opera Co.’s version, now playing at the Van Duzer Theatre, focuses on the family-friendly themes of falling in love, discovering one’s life path and nurturing children’s individuality, with the literal fight for survival only circumstantially in the background. While the grit and dramatic drive of the show is sanitized, the production successfully emphasizes its joy and allows the vocally gifted cast to shine with auditory bliss. Maria (Fiona Gadd Ryder) commits to the nuns of Nonnberg Abby where her free-spirited nature is at odds with the sanctuary’s strict rules. The Reverend Mother Abbess (Cindy Cress) sends her to act as governess to the seven children (Paige Cress, Kara Cress, Stella Mielke, Emma Cress, Elin Strombeck, Maya Demireva, Eriko Jean Iris) of widower Captain George Von Trapp (James Gadd) to decide if monastic life suits her. While the captain smothers the children with militaristic discipline to cope with his wife’s death, Maria wins them over through her infectious love of music. As the children flourish with Maria, so does the captain. Ultimately, they are drawn to each other, to the chagrin of his would-be bride Elsa (Katri Pitts). This causes conflicting emotions within Maria. Meanwhile, Max (Tyler Rich), the captain’s friend, negotiates the Reich’s impending expansion into Austria and how to handle the captain’s distaste for them.
The Von Trapp children with natural playful spirits and the nuns with sweet harmonies and concert presence easily steal the show. Both inject a sense of excitement that boosts the production’s pace and professionalism. It is an absolute pleasure to witness. Director Carol Ryder’s choice to avoid the Nazi cloud that can permeate this production is valid, though the absence of character arcs with the captain and the overly optimistic disposition of Maria robs the audience of the ability to see the progression of their growing love. Their lack of connection culminates in a kiss that received gasps of surprise on the night I attended as opposed to a sweet “awwww” of an audience’s desire to see them together. Likewise, the second act lacks the urgency needed to evoke their fight-or-flight mode to escape Hitler’s presence — I never felt the fear for their lives, the need to protect the family nor the drive for the character’s self-preservation. A stronger chemistry and more notice of each other would help the show rise from the sedation of this dramatic tension. Still, we left the strong production humming familiar melodies and with smiles on our lips. The production crew for HLOC is a tight-knit community, as evidenced by the elegant and cohesive aesthetics throughout the show. Steeped in the beauty of the live orchestra conducted by Larry Pitts, the light design (Santiago Menjivar), costumes (Sue Greene, Carol Ryder, Liz Souza), choreography (Tehya Tuttle, David Hendrickson, Katri Pitts, Kate O’Faolain) and set design (Carlene M Cogliati) work in tandem to create a magnificent harmony and believable world. The glory of beaded gowns, tailored suits, stunning play clothes made from curtains and thoughtful peasant designs display the mastery of the costumes. (Though do we really need blatant swastikas?) The lights feature the garments without oversaturat-

ing, though refocusing them to minimize the spill onto the animated projections could heighten the depth of beautiful sets. I am a glutton for use of a fly system. The magic of them in scene changes (especially with the orchestra) punctuates theater magic and changes momentum-stealing transitions into an awe-inspiring event. This production may have benefited from more of that. This production is a welcoming family affair complete with disrespectful children creating more drama in the house than what is onstage. Yet, like the patient and loving mother seated in front of us, it reminds us that sometimes it is worth not focusing on the negative to reinforce joy, love and respect. Good job to both the production and the mother. l

he 82nd Humboldt Crabs season is in the book, and as the sun sets on another amazing summer, it is time to give out my annual team awards as part of the Best of Humboldt issue. The Crabbies gave fans one last week to show up and cheer for their boys, going undefeated, highlighted by a three-home run game from Chyran Humphries and two dramatic game-defining long balls from three-year veteran Kawana Soares. Now, it’s time to hand out the hardware. Rookie of the year: Alex Harrington In his first collegiate summer of baseball, the Stanford University-bound freshmen delivered in so many ways, showing a poise and moxie well beyond his years. While playing shortstop and centerfield, the kid would place in the top four in the league in stolen bases with 19 bags. A true catalyst in whatever role he was asked to take on, he hit .323 and closed out the season on Sunday a hit short of the cycle while hitting his first home run of the summer onto U.S. Highway 101. Mustache of the year: Cody Collins When we initially held this competition, mustache night was not on the books for the Crabs. I gathered the top mustaches on the team. The criteria stipulated there could be no connectivity to other facial hair. You had to isolate the stache and know who either Tom Selleck or Freddie Mercury was. Also, you couldn’t vote for yourself. Antonio Nordman and Jack Novak received votes, but Collins’ won the prestigious honor. Pitcher of the year: Jackson Kelly This was one of the most highly contested awards. Reliever Evan Miranda staked an early claim to the crown. Miranda dominated out of the bullpen for the Crabs, but his early departure opened up the competition to two other pitchers who had to operate in an enhanced role with huge games down the stretch. In a breakout summer, Bryson

Schelp had multiple starts in big spots, throwing up six innings of shutout baseball in consecutive weeks. The righty finished the season with a record of 4-1 and ERA of 3.41. Jackson Kelly had a record of 4-0 in five starts for the Crabs with a 3.91 ERA, but this award was earned by a historic night. In a huge league contest, Kelly threw the first no-hitter in Pacific Empire League history. The local, who has been around the Crabs since serving as a bat boy and whose family works for the team, struck out 10 hitters that night while walking none Offensive Player of the Year/Captain’s Award: Kawana Soares Returning for his third summer as a Crab, it was clear whom the players looked to as their captain: Soares, who seemed to find himself in the middle of every major situation, took pride in his role and delivered every time. After receiving the award and giving a heartfelt interview, thanking the fans and thinking on his budding career, he’d home in his next at bat. On the final day of the season, trailing 5-4, Soares hit a three-run homer to bring the fans to their feet and win the game 7-5. On the summer, Soares wrapped up an amazing career on the North Coast, catching the most games while hitting .398 with five home runs and 35 RBIs in 32 games played. Mahalo, Kawana. Most Valuable Player: Adam Enyart For the second year in a row, Enyart takes home this award. The two-way standout was 3-1 on the mound while adding two saves to lead the team. He had 42 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched. At the plate after not

He hit .375 with six home runs and a league-leading 56 runs driven in. On the final day of the season, he started on the mound and threw five scoreless innings, while also doubling off the right centerfield fence. In one heated back-and-forth game, Enyart and the opposing pitcher were ejected from the game. It’s unclear why Enyart was tossed as the situation was clearly escalated by the pitcher. Chants of “Enyart, Enyart!” started rising from the Crabs faithful. Enyart, though disappointed, later joined the crowd for a much-deserved victory lap and even a trip to the broadcasting booth. After a thousand selfies and autographs, the game always knows. His roommate and good friend Soares hit the game-winning home run. It would be surprising if Enyart ever had to pay for a meal in Arcata again; he loved the fans and they loved him back. Couldn’t happen to a better kid. Despite missing out on the championship series, the Crabs won 40 of their 54 games before putting a bow on another magical summer at the yard. Manager Jeff Giacomini thanked the fans, the Crab Grass Band and his family for the amazing summer in his first year at the helm. ast Sunday, I found myself with my arms spread against the wood-paneled base of the chromatic brass battlements of the pipe organ at Christ Episcopal Church in Eureka, my left ear pressed against the wood, while the tubes roared out beautiful sounds after the morning mass. I am not necessarily endorsing this behavior — I had a bit of general permission to take videos of the performance from the very kind Rev. Daniel London — but I was probably pushing the boundaries of polite engagement by taking things a bit further. But oh my, what a feeling. An immersion in beauty that left my ears back at the foundations of sensation and sculpted a 3D echo of my desire, love and grief with a wall of vibration from an ecstatic jet stream of angelic song. I would credit the organist, but I didn’t catch her name and felt a little foolish in the wake of the experience for invading her airspace. I’m sorry for that intrusion, maestro. I am a man of faith in the sense that I can be struck dumb by beauty while recognizing the fundamental stupidity of my character that prevents me from replying to the language of the divine. I do know that if I were given the chance to encounter divinity without the filter of the intellect, that experience could not be recorded in words, but rather in the shadow of my former self left burned into the most solid structure behind me. Or something similarly annihilating. All my foolishness aside, go check out the devotional expressions of this congregation if you feel the urge; it is quite beautiful. In the Gospels there are two characters named Lazarus. The most famous one is in the Book of John. This Lazarus’ death and Christ’s observance of the mourning of his family gives us the shortest yet perhaps most poignant line from the Four: John 11:35, “Jesus wept.” Of course, we know this story ends with the resurrection of Lazarus from a rotting corpse. The other Lazarus is in the synoptic Gospel of Luke, and this one relates to a discarded beggar outside of a rich man’s house who can’t reach across the gulf to damnation in the afterlife to save the miserly rich dude after both have died.
It’s a lot like Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as told by a more muzzled and chained Jacob Marley. I’m not preaching here, and don’t worry, I’ve been reading a lot of secular shit and I have some cool stuff about an ancient Roman werewolf lined up for an intro in the near future. I’ve just been thinking about a lot of my problems this week, about redemption and damnation, and I was deeply moved in a way I wanted to share with you, dear reader. You can judge for yourself whether I have made any sense at all. Meanwhile, it’s the perfect moment to enjoy this week, one day at a time.
Thursday Here’s something at Northtown Coffee at 6 p.m. for those of you interested in the word of spoken word poetry. Traveling poet and educator Mister Aubs is going to perform a spoken word set in the context of an open mic for local voices to join in as well. The signup sheet goes out at 5:30 p.m. and the mic lights up a half hour later. Donations are appreciated but not demanded.

However, watch your back if you go outside to smoke or socialize, H street can be volatile at night and a friend of mine got sucker punched and creamed by some jail-tatted bozo there around last Halloween after said tattooed creep had been bounced out of the venue but not away from it. I just want everyone to be safe.

Sunday The Sunday Summer Music Series at the Humboldt Botanical Garden rolls on with some help from inebriati power trio The Beer Scouts, who are probably familiar to regular readers of this column because of their dedication to respawn back to the waters of Humboldt to jam some uncomplicated and fun rock and roll. The show starts at 1 p.m. and the pricing is as follows: $10 for the general public, $7 for seniors and $5 for HBG members.
Monday Savage Henry Comedy Club is hosting a fundraiser for an awesome DIY punk festival at the end of the month called Against All Odds. More on that gig later, but as far as tonight goes, here are the details. The music starts at 7:30 p.m., door donations will run from $5-$20, the event is all ages but bring a valid I.D. if you are of age and wish to buy alcohol, and the line-up is ripping: Dumpster Puppies, Radical APE, Executive Order and Dune TV. Viva.
Tuesday I am once more asking you to head over to the Basement tonight at 7 p.m. for a meeting and practice of some of the best wizards of avant jazz and musical alchemy here or anywhere. I’m talking about Nick Talvola, Alex Espe, Russ Thallheimer, Ian Taylor and Shane Fox holding court as Strange Meeting. You can have a peek into greatness as it comes fresh off the reel of collective inspiration and there is no price to be put on that wonder. Which is handy, because I have heard there’s no cover
tonight. However, if for some reason I have heard incorrectly, the suggested donation will not breach $5.
Wednesday The Terminator (1984) fills a space that only the best dystopian sci-fi films can hope to inhabit. It has an atmosphere that both defined and changed the course of an entire cultural decade, its future story is deeply rooted in the problems of the present when it was made, problems that have only amplified and become more valid and dangerous in the many years since its creation. It has an amazing score set against a story that pits the desperate frailty of human intimacy, love and survival against the impossible coldness of technologically assisted extinction. And hot damn, is it ever perfectly acted by everyone involved. I just watched it the other night in a dark state of being, and rather than shy from its horror, I am excited to experience its majesty on the big screen. Which you can do at sci-fi night at the Arcata Theatre Lounge tonight. Same drill as ever before: Show up between the doors at 6 p.m. and the show at 7 p.m., slap down $6 to get in, or $10 to leave with a poster, and enjoy the pre-game raffle if you show up early enough. THE DINK. Awash as we are in a new wave of underdog sports comedies, usually centered on has-beens or never-weres, it should come as no surprise that Pickleball should have shuffled into the crosshairs. The newfound passion of a generation, what was once a middle-school time-filler has become, in this age of idleness and catastrophe, one of the most popular sports and gathering points in the country, at least among the white-hairs. Because the game is an oddity with no bona fides or streetcred, though, one would have to wonder what tone a movie about it could take that wouldn’t alienate the core audience or its ardent skeptics (of which I am admittedly one), as The Dink clearly strives to. Surprisingly enough, the answer is one of inclusion and reluctant acceptance, both of the game and its enthusiasts, carried off with enough front-loaded cynicism and weirdness to make it palatable to all parties concerned. Dustin Boyd (Jake Johnson), a one-time tennis phenom with some questionable stories about what derailed his career, now spends his days teaching acerbic pre-adolescents and regaling his sidekick/yes-man PJ (Aaron Chen) with inflated tales of his once-greatness. Employed by his wealthy,
pugnacious club owner father (Ed Harris), whose approval he futilely pines for, Dustin is as delusional as he is aggressively (just like dear old Dad) anti-Pickleball, a position that puts him at odds with the financial security of the club. When he becomes enamored with an enthusiast named Candace (Mary Steenburgen) after a characteristically aggressive meet-cute though, Dustin’s timorous but jealously guarded worldview comes up for re-evaluation. Written by Sean Clements (a television comedy veteran) and directed by Josh Greenbaum (Will & Harper, 2024; Strays, 2023), The Dink works because it meets the audience on a level playing-field, allowing those of us with biases in either direction to laugh at ourselves and our presumably misguided counterparts. The movie acknowledges the silliness of the game itself, but also of professional sports orthodox fandom, while acknowledging the authenticity of feeling in which both are rooted. And, most importantly, it is actually funny, seasoned with just enough not-quite-blue humor to satisfy our snarky compunctions. It is definitively a crowd-pleasing exercise, but one clever enough not to pander or dismiss. PG13. 102M. APPLETV.

ARE WE GOOD? As an embarrassingly devout listener of Marc Maron’s podcast WTF? (now mothballed, leaving a cantankerous void), the timeline and subject of Steven Feinartz’s documentary are anything but new to me. I parasocially participated in Maron’s ascendance and tragic loss over the course of more than a thousand episodes, sat distantly with him as the pandemic decimated and rejuvenated him, and learned as much about the business of comedy from the podcast as from any other resource. Further, I listened in as Maron crabbily described the production of the documentary in real-time, with his singular combination of self-loathing and egotism. Which is to say, Are We Good? wasn’t likely to produce any novel revelations. But, for the faithful and the more casual fan (my wife included), the documentary does allow us to re-enter a comfortable space, wherein a crotchety old friend can warm us with his presence, educate us about his vocation and offer some unvarnished insights into his process, both professional and psychological. 97M. PRIME. MADDIE’S SECRET. Writer/director/star John Early, who has been both a welcome presence in mainstream comedy and a standard-bearer of new-wave eccentricity for years now, possesses a sort of cracked charisma born for the screen. He can switch between bemused outside observer and center-frame oddball with apparent ease, always centered in devout dedication to the joke and, in the case of Maddie’s Secret, the pain, joy and love behind the joke. Maddie Ralph (Early), an aspiring chef toiling as a dishwasher in a Los Angeles food-content sweatshop, unexpectedly gets a shot at the big show: Compelled at last to post one of her recipes to social media by her devoted editor partner Jake (Eric Rahill), Maddie becomes a sensation and is brought before the camera by her cretin boss Zach (Connor O’Malley). This puts her at odds with the reigning queen of Gourmaybe, Emily (Claudia O’Doherty) and with the buried truth of her relationship with food and her own body. With unparalleled delicacy and an accomplished artist’s eye for detail, Early renders Maddie’s story as heartfelt satire, exploring subcultures and internal terrain like a gifted cartographer. The emotions at the center of the piece are as genuine and carefully rendered as the jokes are crafted, and the whole thing is carried off with elevated cinematic craft. In it are notes of early
’70s exploitation, ’80s arthouse slashers and after-school specials, all blended into a unique, delicious melange. Maddie’s Secret never wanders astray, never casts unfair judgment; instead, it approaches its subjects with equanimity and tenderness while simultaneously garnishing them with cutting, never cruel humor and undeniable artistry. 100M. arly in this column’s existence, I took a rather superficial look at what’s come to be known as the Whorf Hypothesis (“The Whorf Hypothesis,” Oct. 7, 2010) which, in a nutshell, claims that our Native language influences — or even determines — our view of the world. At that time, I failed to make a distinction between the strong and weak versions of the hypothesis. The strong version, linguistic determinism — the one championed by Benjamin Lee Whorf some 80 years ago — claims that language actually determines thought, thus limiting what we can actually think. The weak version, linguistic relativism, only says that one’s language influences one’s perceptions, but without limiting them. Whorf was an enthusiastic pupil and close friend of pioneering linguist Edward Sapir (1884-1939), who has been associated with Whorf’s ideas, which, long after both men had died, are sometimes referred to as the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. It’s rather unfair because Sapir was a skeptic, writing, “It would be naïve to imagine that any analysis of experience is dependent on patterns expressed in language.” For that matter, Sapir and Whorf never published a joint paper. With linguistic determinism, Whorf went out on a limb, claiming, for instance (on the basis of a single Hopi acquaintance in Manhattan, Ernest Naquayouma, along with a brief visit to a Hopi Reservation in Arizona) that the Hopi language lacked any words for time. The tribe, Whorf said, lived in a timeless, ideal world. Had he deepened his research, he would have discovered that the Hopi people have as much a concept of time as anyone. In his 1983 book Hopi Time, German-American linguist Ekkehart Malotki put Whorf’s notion of Hopi “timelessness” to bed. The much weaker version of so-called “linguistic relativity” is alive and well, however, much discussed in academic circles today. The go-to example of linguistic relativism starts with the observation that English has the word blue, modified by “light” and “dark,” whereas Russian has a single term for each: siniy is light

blue and goloboj is dark blue. Does this mean that Russian speakers are more sensitive to shades of blue than Anglophones? To test the idea, researchers timed how long it took for native speakers of English and Russian to match squares of subtly different blues against a test color. Sure enough, the Russian speakers were faster at the task than the English speakers; it’s easier for people whose language has separate terms for light blue and dark blue to differentiate between shades of that color than for people who have to modify a single word. Case closed! Well, yes and no. True, Russian speakers were more adept at the task, but not by much. In fact, on average, their reaction time was a little more than one-tenth of a second faster than English speakers. Is that really significant? Other experiments to test whether language affects perception have led to equally ambiguous results. In my previous column, for instance, I quoted linguist Guy Deutscher’s claim that German people, whose word for “bridge” is feminine (die Brücke), associated bridges with more feminine qualities (slender, elegant) than Spanish speakers, who tended to describe bridges in more masculine terms (strong, durable) following, presumably, the unconscious prompting of their language: el puente is masculine. But so what? It all seems rather inconsequential. As a former bridge designer, I’m quite sure that German and Spanish engineers used the same criteria when planning a new structure. Popular author and linguist Steven Pinker is particularly critical of language relativity, writing in his 1994 book The Language Instinct, “The more you examine Whorf’s arguments, the less sense they make.” For Pinker, the whole idea of our native language affecting our worldview is moot anyway. Pinker believes that thought is independent of language, since we don’t think in the language we use to communicate. Rather, we think in “mentalese,” our brain’s meta-language that precedes our native language. Next week, we’ll look at two examples of how linguistic determinism, aka the Strong Whorf Hypothesis, has made it into popular culture: The movie Arrival and the novel 1984. l

Barbara Lynn Bareuther Dec. 8, 1943 – July 22, 2026
Barbara moved with Tim and Shari to Reno, Nevada to be near her parents. She met James Meadows and remarried in 1980, moving the family to his country property in Crow Oregon. She worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Eugene and continued being an active presence at the kids school activities and cheering them along in sports and drama performances. Barbara and Jim divorced after a couple of years. In 1984, Barbara married Harold (Hal) Fanslow. They moved to the Sacramento California area and Barbara decided to go back to college to finish her degree and get a teaching certificate. She taught 3rd grade in the Sacramento area and Tehachapi to kids who didn’t speak English despite the fact that she didn’t speak other languages. At that time, California taught kids in an immersion program where they learned English rapidly. California eliminated the immersion programs and laid off teachers that weren’t bilingual, so Barbara was pushed out of the state to teach. During these years Barbara and Hal divorced, remarried and divorced again. Barbara married Ronald Keller in 1992 and they remained married until her death. Barbara and Ron moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where she taught 3rd grade English as a 2nd Language to kids from all around the world until her retirement. Barbara was a dedicated teacher who adored “her kids” and took tremendous pride in their progress. She loved teaching 3rd grade where the kids were “old enough to blow their own noses but young enough to not sass back.” During these years, Barbara became a grandma seven times over and she couldn’t have been prouder. Despite living a distance away, she visited frequently and would send random “grandma care packages” to the kids just because. All of the grandkids have wonderful memories and stories to cherish about their grandma – she was a kick. After retirement, Barbara and Ron moved to Roseville California to be closer to Tim and his growing family. They lived there for a number of years before Barbara’s Alzheimer’s began showing itself as it did for her mother. Barbara and Ron chose to buy a house in Fortuna California, near Shari so
she could provide more assistance as the care needs increased. Advancing Alzheimer’s is an awful slow-moving train wreck of a story so we will skip the details. Unfortunately, Ron was also experiencing his own mental health challenges at the time which were made that much worse by the pandemic lockdowns. The family had hoped that Ron would be a steady presence in the home who could assist Barbara as her memory continued to fail but circumstances intervened. A conservatorship of both Barbara and Ron became immediately necessary and Adult Protective Services did what they could for which the family is grateful. APS referred them both to the Humboldt County Public Guardian’s (PG) office for a conservatorship but family members of Ron’s came to Fortuna and removed Barbara and Ron from the county before the PG could file papers. Ron’s family checked Barbara and Ron into a locked memory care facility in Rocklin, CA despite not having any legal authority to place them and they restricted all family access to Barbara. An epic conservatorship fight in the Humboldt County Probate Court ensued between Shari who had been designated by Barbara and Ron in their wills and living trust versus a previously unknown nephew of Ron’s who had hired a prominent local attorney. The Conservatorship of Barbara has been documented by Shari and her husband Steve on their local news website. Judge Canning appointed this nephew as conservator despite the recommendations of the court investigator to not do that. To make a long story short, the Keller estate was completely drained within a few years and the conservator “resigned.” Leaving Barbara and Ron as “wards of the county” under the conservatorship of the Humboldt County Public Guardian’s office. Barbara’s health took a sudden and dramatic turn downward this spring as she was hospitalized multiple times for urinary tract infections. Her health never recovered and she began to deteriorate very rapidly. Through the extraordinary efforts of Cassidy Ross and Kelli Schwartz with the Public Guardian’s office, Barbara
was brought home to Humboldt and to her family barely two months before she passed away. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the Public Guardian’s office, Timber Ridge and the caregivers who provided wonderful care to Barbara at the end. Thank you! Barbara will be remembered by her family and all who knew her as truly one of a kind. She was uniquely gracious and had a talent for meeting people where they were. This made her an extraordinary teacher and a deeply loving grandma. She loved Christmas and enjoyed going out to see the Christmas lights and decorations around town. She was a kid at heart and it was infectious to everyone around her. Barbara hosted many family Thanksgivings and Christmases - she knew how to throw a great party! She had a great eye for decorating that is hard to describe but easy to recognize. She made the world a better place by her presence. She will be deeply missed. Loving mother to Timothy C. Jenkins (wife Joann) of Newcastle; proud grandmother to Alexandria and husband Thomas, and Laura Jenkins. Loving mother to Sharon L. Wolff (husband Steve) of Rio Dell; proud grandmother to Marylynn and husband Casey, great-granddaughter Ellie, Richard and wife Sara, greatgrandson Damiano, Shauna and great-grandson Walter, Michael and wife Kathryn, great-grandchildren Benjamin and Samantha, Steven Craig and wife Kiera, great-grandchildren Nathan, Jackson and Iris. Barbara is further survived by her older sister Nancy Zinos of Graeagle, CA, younger brother Rick Bareuther of Sparks, NV and spouse Ronald Keller. On a personal note, I see my mom every time I look in the mirror and I couldn’t be prouder. I get most of my best lines from mom who was one of the funniest people I know because she never tried to be funny. She was simply genuine and her enthusiasm was a joy to be around. There is a lot more to be said and many stories to be shared to honor my mom and her legacy. More to come…

Her first day on the job, she was thrilled to find a parking spot right next to the front door of her new office. She was later informed that the parking spot belonged to an air force general and she should probably not park there again.
