‘Little Concern’ Editor: Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst took heat at a town hall meeting recently while defending the Medicaid cuts in Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” (“Feds Impact in Humboldt,” May 29). Out of frustration, she resorted to saying, “We all are going to die,” which is clearly a true statement.

Unfortunately, for the many who face the Medicaid cuts, a more accurate statement would be, “We are all going to die; just more of us now, sooner,” which is apparently of little concern to the GOP in Congress under Trump.

Editor: Simply put, the council/city manager form of government in California intent is that the council and city manager work together as a team (“Rancor, Recalls and a Resignation,” June 5). The council carries out the will of the majority via the staff work of the city subject matter experts and the various commissions. The city manager is given enough responsibility and freedom to manage the staff city functions efficiently and effectively. Public engagement and trust between staff and council is key. Council members should study the Institute for Local Government orientation for newly elected officials.

This council seems to distrust the public, the staff and the city manager.

They want to review past decisions and take on research and development tasks themselves despite excellent city and commission staff work. It is bad management practice to diminish staff rather than to build it up.

The staff-endorsed Housing Element was ready to meet a state April 30 deadline but was defeated by a 3-2 vote by the council. Subsequently, the state responded with a May 30 deadline and listed serious penalties for non-compliance. We await the state response to new deadlines extending past year’s end from the Blue Lake City Council. This situation could have been easily avoided by approving the staff-endorsed element. Worst case is that the state and developers can now sue the city.

The city manager’s contract was up for renewal. We have enjoyed nine years of extraordinary city management and leadership. However, after three closed sessions with overwhelming city support for the manager, we learned that this exceptionally talented individual was let go without reasons given. (There may have been Brown Act violations, as well.)

We have important projects this year that require good staff work with a light, but deft touch from the city council. We feel that we need to make a strong statement that working at cross purposes to the public and city staff is unacceptable.

Waste, Fraud and Abuse, Indeed Editor: Who has huge expensive military parades? Only the dictators of China, Russia and North Korea — not democracies who spend their $83 million on improving the lives of service members, their families and veterans (Mailbox, June 5)! That’s pure waste.

It is fraud to pretend the parade is to celebrate the birth of the army when it’s just a very expensive and indulgent birthday celebration for the president who ordered it for himself. That is fraud.

It is an abuse of taxpayer’s money and the use of DOGE, whose cuts in personnel and intimidation at the Pentagon enabled the president to get permission for this big display. The Pentagon wouldn’t let him have his parade in the first administration, so he is finding a way to get it this time around. That is abuse.

If you don’t like waste, fraud and abuse, join the people’s parade June 14 at Madaket Plaza at 11 a.m. or join them at the Humboldt County Courthouse at noon. Bring a sign: No kings, no dictators or no waste, fraud or abuse. Let’s keep our democracy real!

Bigger Surge of Law Enforcement and Military Coming to LA as Newsom, Trump Feud Escalates

rotesters have confronted authorities in Los Angeles, Paramount and neighboring Compton since Friday over raids conducted

by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On Monday, tensions continued to rise — between protesters and authorities, and between federal and local officials over how to respond.

Over the weekend, Trump administration officials announced they were calling

up the National Guard in response to what the White House said were “violent mobs” attacking “ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles.”

NPR confirmed Monday that 700 Marines would also be sent to L.A. in a support role.

The 60-day deployment of National Guard and Marines to L.A. is expected to cost $134 million, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and lower-level defense officials told a California congressman Tuesday morning.

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass told AirTalk that she has “no idea” what the National Guard troops and Marines heading for

L.A. plan to do, but she said she’s certain they are not needed. She added that the city attorney is considering taking legal action against the Trump administration, although she doesn’t know yet what the lawsuit would look like.

The state of California has filed a lawsuit against the administration over the deployment. State Attorney General Rob Bonta said at a news conference Monday that Trump and Hegseth ignored law enforcement’s expertise and guidance, trampled over the state’s sovereignty and unlawfully invoked a statute that’s intended to prevent an invasion or rebellion even thought that was not the case in Los Angeles.

What’s Happened So Far? At a news conference Monday evening, Bass said she knew of five ICE raids that had occurred across the region, with at least two occurring within the city of L.A. “ ICE does not tell anybody where they’re going to go or when they’re going to be there,” Bass said. “I can’t emphasize enough the level of fear and terror that is in Angelenos right now, not knowing if tomorrow or tonight it might be where they live. It might be their workplace.”

The mayor condemned the actions of the federal agents.

“At the beginning of this administration we were told raids would be to look for violent criminals, people who have war-

rants,” she said.

“But I don’t know how you go from a drug dealer to a Home Depot to people’s workplaces where they just trying to make a living. It makes me feel like our city is actually a test case for what happens when the federal government moves in and takes the authority away from the state or away from local government.”

The federal immigration sweeps prompted anger, protest and resistance from onlookers and immigrant rights groups that have braced for this type of action for months.

Outside City Hall on Sunday, Eli Lockwood of Hacienda Heights told LAist she was there for a planned demonstration to protest what she said were “disgusting attacks on our communities.”

“We have to stand united against the attacks on the immigrant community because an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” she said.

By Sunday morning, hundreds of National Guard members were on duty in downtown L.A., where two protests — one permitted and one not permitted — converged near the federal detention center.

The growing protest made for a rowdy and tense scene, punctuated by the sound of flash bangs and tear gas.

How Are Officials Responding to the Raids and Protests?

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday formally asked that President Donald Trump rescind the deployment he had ordered Saturday.

Newsom called the plan to take over deployment from the state “a serious breach of state sovereignty,” and “purposefully inflammatory,” adding that it “will only escalate tensions,” and that he’d been in “close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need.”

On Monday morning, Bass said she supported Newsom’s request, adding that she had tried to dissuade the Trump administration from sending in troops.

“The last thing this city needs is civil unrest that is provoked,” she said.

Trump said the move was needed on social media, turning the governor’s name into an insult: “If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles, can’t do their jobs, which everyone knows they can’t, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!”

How is Law Enforcement Scaling Up? LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said the imminent arrival of U.S. Marines would be more of a logistical strain.

“The arrival of federal military forces in Los Angeles — absent clear coordination — presents a significant logistical and operational challenge for those of us charged with safeguarding this city,” he said in a statement.

Now, hundreds of more law enforcement officers are also heading to Los Angeles. Newsom said Monday he’s working with partner agencies to send more than 800 additional state and local law enforcement officers into Los Angeles “to clean up President Trump’s mess.”

“Chaos is exactly what Trump wanted, now we are sending in hundreds more law enforcement to pick up the pieces,” he said in a statement. “State and local leaders stand together, coordinated and resolute to ensure the safety of the Los Angeles region.”

The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is now formally requesting the deployment of officers from a range of neighboring jurisdictions, including the California Highway Patrol and the sheriff’s departments in Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and Santa Barbara counties.

The competing orders came as Los Angeles officials braced for another day of protests against immigration raids that over the weekend became violent and destructive in downtown.

The Los Angeles Police Department said Monday it had arrested 50 people in connection with the protests over the weekend. The Los Angeles County Sheriff›s Department said it had made five arrests, and California Highway Patrol made 19 arrests.

McDonnell said the department would use video and other evidence to hold as many other people as possible accountable for violence.

What Have the Protests Been Like?

In addition to the gathering outside City Hall, a larger crowd assembled outside the Metropolitan Detention Center on Sunday, near where Alameda Street crosses over the 101 Freeway. Images showed National Guard troops clashing with some of the protesters.

Police officers eventually moved in to disperse the crowd before police announced that the use of less-than-lethal munitions had been authorized. The LAPD

also said on X that officers had reported people in the crowd “throwing concrete, bottles and other objects,” prompting arrests.

Television news footage showed that several Waymo self-driving cars were vandalized, including at least two that were set on fire near Olvera Street, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air.

Anna Benedict of Echo Park told LAist earlier in the day that the demonstration had been largely peaceful.

“I mean, everybody here wants to be peaceful,” she said. “We’ve been standing here for quite a while, and no one is menacing the National Guard. Everybody is just standing up for their own freedom.”

What’s the Role of the National Guard?

Two starkly contrasting pictures of conditions in the L.A. area continued to be offered by Trump and his allies, compared with local and state officials.

While Fox News and other conservative media used captions like “L.A. Riots” and the term “rioters” was trending on X, closer to home, authorities described isolated skirmishes and urged calm. Some national outlets seem to think Paramount, where some violence was reported, was located within the city of Los Angeles.

U.S. Rep. Nanette Barragán, whose district includes Paramount, told LAist Sunday morning that she’d been in close contact with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, which patrols the area.

“We don’t need additional assistance,” she said. “We have everything under control... the Sheriff’s [Department] in Paramount got everything under control yesterday and LAPD has cleared out downtown last night without the help of National Guard.”

The Sheriff’s Department told LAist that two deputies had been injured Saturday, treated at a hospital and released. It also said people threw bottles and set off fireworks; some were detained.

Bass and other local and state leaders have urged protesters to remain peaceful, saying there is no place for violence or attacks on police as people exercise their First Amendment rights.

Barragán said her constituents are upset: “People are angry. ... They’re concerned. There’s a lot of anxiety about immigration enforcement.”

The effect “ is terrorizing the community, and now you send the National Guard, you know, against their own people, and that is of course going to escalate the situation, and we’re trying to deescalate. And I think this administration knows what they’re

doing. They’re trying to have a distraction.”

What Led Up to Trump’s Action?

The conflict in Paramount, a city of about 56,000 residents south of downtown L.A., attracted national attention after protests near a Home Depot extended into Saturday. Those protests appear to have begun when ICE agents were spotted in the area.

As the situation there was still developing, L.A. County Sheriff’s Department officials said in a statement that “as the situation escalated, the crowd of protesters became increasingly agitated, throwing objects and exhibiting violent behavior toward federal agents and deputy sheriffs.”

At that point, the department said it requested additional resources “countywide.” The statement did not reference the National Guard.

“We will protect your right to peacefully protest,” Sheriff Robert Luna said in an interview included in the statement, “but we will not tolerate violence or destruction of property.”

The Sheriff’s Department also clarified that they were not participating in any immigration enforcement actions, saying: “When federal authorities come under attack and request assistance, we will support them and provide aid. However, this does not mean that we are assisting with their immigration actions or operations; rather, our objective is to protect them from any violent attacks. Any assault on federal or local law enforcement is unacceptable.”

In Los Angeles by contrast, LAPD officials released a statement at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday calling the day’s protests in the city “peaceful” and commending “all those who exercised their First Amendment rights responsibly,” adding that the department “appreciates the cooperation of organizers, participants and community partners who helped ensure public safety throughout the day.”

Later in the evening, LAPD officers ordered protesters in downtown L.A. to disperse and closed Alameda between Los Angeles Street and 2nd Street to both pedestrians and vehicles.

What We Know About the ICE Raids Initially, ICE officials said 44 people were arrested in the raids, although some news reports placed the number at more than 120 by late Saturday.

“ICE officers and agents alongside partner law enforcement agencies, executed four federal search warrants at three locations in central Los Angeles,” ICE spokesperson Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe said in a statement.

Confrontations between what appeared to be ICE officers and people in the streets of downtown L.A. could be seen in video aired on local television and shared on social media.

At times, uniformed agents or officers could be seen physically moving people who appeared to be blocking the officers and their vehicles.

Reports shared via the social media platform X said ICE was seen in the Garment District area of L.A. Another video showed federal agents in the parking lot of a Home Depot in Westlake, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, known as CHIRLA, said her organization estimated there were at least 45 detentions.

Among them was Service Employees International Union California President David Huerta. They said Huerta had been injured and was receiving medical attention while in custody.

“What happened to me is not about me; this is about something much bigger,” Huerta said in a statement released by the union. “This is about how we as a community stand together and resist the injustice that’s happening. Hard-working people, and members of our family and our community, are being treated like criminals.

We all collectively have to object to this madness because this is not justice. This is injustice. And we all have to stand on the right side of justice.”

Several immigrant rights leaders and activists, along with some city elected officials, attended a large rally Friday evening to share their reactions to the federal operations and call for a stop to them.

Later, more than 300 people marched a few blocks toward the federal detention center.

Reaction from City Officials Since Friday, L.A. Mayor Karen Bass has been vocal in speaking out against the ICE raids.

“As a mayor of a proud city of immigrants, who contribute to our city in so many ways, I am deeply angered by what has taken place,” Bass said in a statement Friday. “These tactics sow terror in our communities and disrupt basic principles of safety in our city.

“My office is in close coordination with immigrant rights community organizations,” the mayor continued. “We will not stand for this.”

All 15 members of the City Council released a joint statement that echoed some of the same points the Bass made.

“We condemn this in no uncertain terms: Los Angeles was built by immigrants

and it thrives because of immigrants,” the statement read. “We will not abide by fear tactics to support extreme political agendas that aim to stoke fear and spread discord in our city.

“To every immigrant living in our city: We see you, we stand with you, and we will fight for you,” the statement continued. “Los Angeles will continue to be a place that values and dignifies every human being, no matter who they are or where they come from.”

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said his department was not involved in the ICE operations.

“While the LAPD will continue to have a visible presence in all our communities to ensure public safety, we will not assist or participate in any sort of mass deportations, nor will the LAPD try to determine an individual’s immigration status,” he said.

After the sweeps, photographers captured several protesters being detained by officers. Addressing a crowd at a rally, L.A. Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez pushed back against previous statements by the Trump administration that ICE would focus their efforts on dangerous criminals.

“It’s never, ever, ever been the case,” Hernandez said. “Because when they come for one of us, they come for all of us. And we have to remember that.”

Councilmember Ysabel Jurado noted the timing of the ICE operations, stressing that they happened at a time when families and students are celebrating graduations and the LGBTQ+ community is celebrating Pride Month.

“What kind of government plans this during our most sacred moments of joy?”

Jurado asked. “The footage speaks for itself. This is cruelty disguised as policy.”

Mass Deportations Since Trump was elected, immigrant rights groups in Southern California have been on edge. Trump has promised “mass deportations” of unauthorized immigrants.

There have been protests that have shut down freeways and high school walkouts by students protesting the administration.

“Los Angeles immigrant communities and allies have been preparing,” Andres Kwon of the American Civil Liberties Union told LAist in February.

The ACLU is part of the L.A. Rapid Response Network, a group of immigrant rights, legal and faith-based groups that has a hotline for people to report ICE activity and to seek help after a raid.

CHIRLA and other groups have hosted workshops that teach undocumented immigrants how to assert their constitutional rights, as well as how to

prepare for worst-case scenarios. They’ve been telling people they don’t have to allow a federal agent into their home without a warrant and don’t have to reveal their immigration status.

The Los Angeles Unified School District began distributing “red cards,” also known as “Know Your Rights” cards, to help people assert their rights and defend themselves if they encounter federal immigration agents.

The effort came as the Trump administration announced it would allow ICE to conduct arrests in sensitive areas such as schools and churches, dismantling policies dating back to 2011.

Before L.A., ICE conducted high-profile enforcement actions in Chicago and Boston. Last week, an ICE raid on a restaurant in San Diego’s South Park neighborhood resulted in multiple arrests. While the raid was taking place, crowds gathered outside the restaurant where many people protested the action, filming the officers on their cellphones and surrounding their vehicles.

Detentions Under Biden Removals of immigrants by ICE and Customs and Border Patrol in the L.A. area were on the rise before Trump came into office. But the Washington Post reported earlier this year that ICE had struggled to boost arrest numbers despite an infusion of resources.

ICE/CBP removals in the L.A. Area of Operations, which includes much of Southern California, increased by more than 180 percent between the 2022 and 2024 fiscal years, according to ICE data.

More than 3,551 people were removed in fiscal 2024, which ended Sept. 30.

Detentions also rose, according to the data.

While national detentions remained fairly constant over the past four years, L.A.-area detentions increased by 155 percent from 2022 to 2024, when 3,857 people were detained.

“That doesn’t surprise me,” Chris Newman, legal director and general counsel for the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, said earlier this year.

While in office, former President Joe Biden was under increasing political pressure to address illegal immigration.

“The Biden administration was focused on recent arrivals and people with criminal history,” Newman said.

From 2023 to 2024, the L.A. area had significant increases in detentions (a 432-percent increase from 217 to 1,154) and removals (a 547-percent increase from 223 to 1,443) of people who had not been convicted of crimes. l

AG Seeks Court Order Against St. Joseph Hospital

alifornia Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office filed a motion June 9 in Humboldt County Superior Court seeking a judge’s order enforcing a stipulation reached in a lawsuit brought against Providence St. Joseph Hospital last year requiring it to comply with state’s Emergency Service Law and provide emergency abortive procedures when they are deemed medically necessary.

“The terms of the stipulation and court order against Providence St. Joseph are clear,” Bonta said in a press release. “Providence must fully comply with California’s Emergency Services Law and ensure that patients can access life-saving health services including emergency abortion care — no exceptions. Now, months after their stipulation and agreement to abide by the law, Providence St. Joseph is attempting to find wiggle room to shirk its duty to patients under the law. We refuse to let that happen.”

Providence, meanwhile, issued a statement reiterating its stance that the hospital is “transparent” about not performing elective abortions but asserting that “in emergencies” its care teams provide “medically necessary interventions to protect pregnant patients who are miscarrying or facing serious life-threatening conditions.”

This stance, the hospital contends, is consistent with the California Emergency Services

Law and the Catholic Ethical and Religious Directives it follows.

Filed in September, the landmark lawsuit alleges Providence violated multiple state laws when it declined to provide an emergency abortion procedure to Anna Nusslock, who arrived at the hospital with severe abdominal pain in February of 2024 after her water broke 15 weeks into her pregnancy with twins. Nusslock was diagnosed with preterm premature rupture of membranes and told that while one of her fetuses still had detectable heart tones, both were nonviable and would not survive, according to the lawsuit. The suit alleges she was warned by a doctor that attempting to continue the pregnancy carried “significant maternal morbidity and mortality risks.”

The suit — as well as another later brought by Nusslock against the hospital personally — alleges specialists at University of California, San Francisco Medical Center and a doctor at St. Joseph agreed immediate abortion care was recommended, though Nusslock was told the doctor was not “permitted to provide” it at St. Joseph so long as the either of the fetuses had detectable heart tones. Ultimately, Nusslock was transferred to Mad River Community Hospital, which has since shuttered its labor and delivery unit, and alleges she arrived in

a deteriorating condition, having “passed an apple-sized blood clot,” and was rushed into emergency surgery.

The National Women’s Law Center, which brought the lawsuit on Nusslock’s behalf in April, issued a statement applauding the Attorney General’s Office’s recent filing.

“The hospital cannot agree to follow state law in a court order and then walk away when it becomes inconvenient,” the statements says. “Dr. Nusslock is still grappling with the trauma of being denied emergency abortion care, a violation that should never have happed in the first place.”

The referenced order was an approved stipulation reached shortly after the suit was filed in which Providence and the AG’s Office in which St. Joseph agreed its care staff will allow physicians to terminate a patient’s pregnancy when necessary to protect a pregnant person’s health.

But a footnote in a motion seeking dismissal of the case filed months later — and ultimately rejected by a Humboldt County Superior Court judge — indicated the hospital intended to continue following the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare Services.

“To the extent that the AG contends the stipulation requires [St. Joseph Hospital] to allow procedures that are not permitted by the [directives], SJH reserves the right

to modify or vacate the stipulation if and when appropriate,” the filing stated.

The AG’s June 9 motion contends the hospital’s obligations under the agreed to and court-ordered stipulation “are as clear and straightforward as obligations can be,” noting the stipulation says the hospital “must fully comply” with the Emergency Services Law “with respect to pregnant patients experiencing emergency medical conditions.”

The stipulation further states the hospital must let healthcare providers make the ultimate determination in these cases.

The motion states that it was filed after the hospital indicated it would file a motion seeking to modify the stipulation.

“In other words, SJH seeks to reinject vagueness into how it treats pregnant patients and, ultimately, open the door to deviate from the unambiguous obligations [the hospital] submitted to last year: Follow the law,” the motion states.

A tentative June 30 court date has been set for Judge Timothy Canning to hear arguments on the issue. Providence’s statement says the health system will address the AG’s position fully in its forthcoming legal response.

A third lawsuit, brought by a woman identified as Jane Doe with allegations similar to Nusslock’s, meanwhile, remains pending.

More Information Emerges in Fatal Police Shooting

A

s information continues to trickle out regarding the June 5 fatal shooting of a 29-year-old Simi Valley man by a Humboldt County sheriff’s deputy, a picture is emerging of the man who allegedly rushed a deputy with a knife having been in prolonged medical distress.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a man who’d entered the Bear River Recreation Center with a bandaged, bloody arm “actively dripping blood throughout the facility,” and arrived to find Nicholas David Anderson uncooperative and refusing medical care.

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal, who told the Journal he had limited information as the two deputies involved in the incident had not been officially interviewed by investigators as of June 9, said Anderson first reportedly arrived at Bear River Casino after walking away from St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka that morning, against doctors’ advice.

Honsal said his understanding is that Anderson was contacted by casino security and told them he wanted to take a

shower, so was directed to the recreation center. After Anderson showered there, staff became alarmed and summoned law enforcement and emergency medical personnel, wanting to get him medical treatment for what Honsal said has been described as “a very large open wound” on Anderson’s arm that left muscles, veins and ligaments visible.

A sheriff’s office press release says investigators were able to use license plate recognition camera data to determine a vehicle associated with Anderson arrived in Humboldt County from Simi Valley on June 3. The release further says that after arriving here, “it appears” Anderson used an alias to receive medical treatment at a local facility for “a previously existing injury.”

The Fortuna Police Department’s service call logs indicate its officers responded to a reported disturbance at Redwood Memorial Hospital at 10:15 p.m. on June 4, after an employee there reported an assault victim in the emergency room was “refusing medical care for large open wound on wrist.” The log states the victim advised the injury was from an assault that occurred in Oregon.

Honsal said he doesn’t know the specifics of what happened at Redwood Memorial Hospital but understands Anderson was ultimately admitted and transferred or referred to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment. Then, the morning of the shooting, Honsal said it’s believed he “walked away” from the hospital.

Calls placed to the Fortuna Police Department for details about what happened at Redwood Memorial were not immediately returned.

At the Bear River Recreation Center, Honsal said Anderson’s wound was evaluated by emergency medical technicians and paramedics, who advised he needed emergency treatment.

“He refused treatment and walked away,” Honsal said, adding that Anderson then got in his car and drove away. At no point, Honsal said, had Anderson been hostile to the deputies on scene.

The shooting reportedly happened a short time later, when Anderson returned to the scene and confronted deputies near the recreation center, charging one “with a knife in a threatening manner,” prompting one of the deputies to open fire and shoot him in

the chest, according to the press release.

Honsal declined to discuss the details of the fatal altercation itself, but said it was captured on both deputies’ bodyworn cameras and witnessed by numerous bystanders.

The sheriff said it remains unclear how, when or where Anderson sustained the injury to his arm, or why he repeatedly refused to have it medically treated. He said an autopsy would be performed and the involved deputies would be interviewed in the coming days, after which his department would be prepared to release more information.

Honsal said the situation is a sad one, tragic for Anderson and his family, and “life-altering” for the deputies involved.

“I just think this is kind of a sign and a signal of where we are with mental health treatment within the county and the state,” he said. “Despite the fact that we de-escalated and had other individuals on scene trying to assist this individual, he did not want assistance. And ultimately, he made decisions that cost him his life. It’s just a sad case.”

North Coast Open Studios lets the world in

ith one weekend down, the 25th North Coast Open Studios (annual but for the two years cut off by COVID-19), a free, self-guided tour of local artists’ and artisans’ workspaces, wraps up Saturday, June 14, and Sunday, June 15. A DreamMaker project of the Ink People, this year’s roster boasts 154 participating creators.

Coordinator Monica Topping, who took over for Taffy Stockton in 2014, says she inherited “an established and well-organized event, for which I’m grateful every year.” Some of the artists on the tour have been there since the beginning, among them Alan Sanborn, Patricia Sennott, Peggy Loudon, Michelle Murphy Ferguson, Kathy O’Leary and Stock Schlueter.

was still hanging the last pieces for display. “We all cut it pretty close,” she says of her fellow artists with a chuckle. She describes her work as mostly ranging from impressionistic interpretations of natural forms to complete abstractions rendered in acrylics or in oil paint applied with a palette knife. She recalls she was working out of the C Street Studios when she first heard about the fledgling North Coast Open Studios. The prospect was exciting. “It’s such solitary work, so to have people come by and look and maybe buy stuff,” she huffs out a sigh. She jumped on and never looked back.

“Some years, of course, I’d sell more than others. But it was fun and social,” O’Leary says, with a steady roster of people she sees each year, some of whom have been visiting since the beginning.

This year, they’ll get a look at a

whole new medium from her, as O’Leary has only recently begun experimenting with collage. It’s a chance for her to get some direct feedback on the work, too.

There are also some 38 new participants this year. Topping says she frequently talks with artists about what successful participation in North Coast Open Studios would mean for them. Money, she notes, isn’t guaranteed, but there are other benefits. “They get to have real, actual conversations about, ‘What is your work about?’” Visitors might include established admirers or collectors, as well as those new to the work.

Studios run the gamut. “It’s everything from the kitchen table to a garage to a rented studio space.” (Mark Larson’s photographs of the first weekend, here and in the full slideshow at northcoastjournal.com, are testament to that variety.)

Topping herself is under the “appointment only” section, since North Coast Open Studios’ two weekends are her time for touring. And she goes hard, hitting around 90 studios over the course of the event. Once the preparations are out of her hands, she can enjoy the curiosity and camaraderie like everyone else. While it’s impossible to pick a favorite, she says she likes the live demos best, like watching Stock Schlueter begin a painting from its first streaks of color and seeing it bloom into a landscape.

She’s also a sucker for fire, so glass blowing or blacksmithing are always going to draw her.

“Having artists who are doing the thing … you get this connection to the work because you get a connection to the person behind the work … it gives it a value beyond a dollar.”

Humboldt Dockside Market Sells Out of Fish in 30 Minutes

espite reported poor weather over the past few weeks, the Humboldt Dockside Market debuted in Eureka’s Madaket Plaza on Saturday, June 7, at 9 a.m., selling out of fish within the first 30 minutes.

Megan Kenney, director of the North Coast Growers Association’s Harvest Hub, said the market opened with fewer fishers participating than expected due to the heavy winds that kept the boats docked.

“This whole week the seas have been super, super rough,” Kenney said. “So, we haven’t wanted to ask our fishermen to go out just for safety reasons.”

The only fisher who showed up with fresh catch at the market was Tony Burris, whose boat left the docks at 3 p.m. the day before, returning at around 7 a.m. market day. His boat brought back around 30 rockfish and 40 crabs to sell at the market. Burris said that he went out despite the harsh weather conditions in hopes of seeing the market succeed.

“It was really rough all night last night,” Burris said. “We had to fight our way down to the cape and stay on anchor as

long as we can and just try to catch as many fish as we can. It ended up turning out pretty good. We wish we could’ve caught more, of course.”

Kenney said that the conditions for fishing are always unpredictable, but with better weather the market can expect more fishers to show up in the future.

She said there are currently between 10 and 15 processed applicants for fishers at the market.

The market held a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. with members of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce in attendance. Ashley Vellis, owner of Ashley Seafood and a major force behind the dockside market, gave a speech highlighting her desire to support local fishers and the work she put into the market.

She also noted the market received grant funding from Coast Central Credit Union.

Chris Nelson, a member of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce and Coast Central Credit Union chamber ambassador, said he looked forward to the economic growth potential of the market and how it could allow the seafood food scene to expand in Humboldt County. “ This will be more like a ground-up

or a grassroots movement where if you start to grow this and you start to grow demand, then other things are gonna happen. Not only will you end up with fish vendors, you’ll probably end up with fish preparers,” including food trucks, Nelson said.

Vellis, who worked the processing station at the market, said the processing fee for the crab or fish was $4 per item, but the cost could vary depending on the type of fish, with more labor-intensive species like albacore coming in at $5.

James Wood, a local resident who came with his family, bought two large Dungeness crabs from Burris and had them processed on the spot. He said this would be his first time trying fresh crab straight from the shell.

While customers can have their fish prepared in any way they want, whether filleted or gutted and gilled, Vellis said she encourages people to make use of what would otherwise be waste, like the head.

“It’s a beautiful resource that we have, fish waste,” Vellis said. “Some people put it in their gardens. Some people use it for fish stock. Some of our commercial fishermen will use it for bait, for crab fishing.”

Kenney said the leftover fish waste from the market is available to be used by fishers for crab bait or by farmers as fertilizer. She added there are also discussions with someone from Cal Poly Humboldt about the development of a kelp fertilizer.

Arcata Pizza and Deli also took up a stall at the dockside market, selling albacore poké, rockfish ceviche and smoked salmon chowder made from local fish.

Owner Josh Auckland incorporates the fish he catches on his boat the Markit 8 in the restaurant’s — and now the stall’s — menu. He debuted the menu items at Friday Night Market the night before, saying these items would currently be exclusive for market events.

Auckland, who also plans to sell fresh fish, said he feels reassured seeing the amount of interest people had in purchasing at the market.

“I was actually surprised that so many people showed up, so that gives me hope that when we do show up with a fresh load of fish, that we’re gonna sell it,” he said. “My worry is if we show up with a few hundred pounds of fish and then nobody comes to buy it. So, it makes me feel good that people came, so you know it’s worth the risk to go out and catch some fish and bring it here and there’s a really good chance we’ll sell out.”

Auckland said that much of the seafood in Humboldt restaurants and supermarkets are sourced from outside of the area. He said there aren’t many large fishing boats in Humboldt County, with most of the local fleet being small fishers who struggle to compete against bigger boats that can catch more and sell it cheaper.

“It’s really tough for what we’re doing,” he said. “There’s a lot of regulations and stuff for small boats and not a lot of people do it ‘cause they don’t really have a market for the fish. So, we’ve created our own market with our restaurant — that way we can try to make a little more off of the fish. It is not easy to do. That’s why there isn’t very many people doing it.”

John Lafargue, owner of Migration Fishing Co., was also at the market selling ocean-themed clothing like T-shirts and fish-embroidered hats. Lafargue also had mats upcycled from crab lines and tote bags his wife made from weather gear, life rafts and survival suits.

The Return of Mosquitoes and the Bucket of Doom™

pring has sprung, and the copious rains we received this past winter and early spring are showing themselves in the lush growth of grass, trees, shrubs and (dramatic pause) mosquitoes. I don’t know about your yard/ garden/place, but I have to either slather myself with mosquito repellent or wear some netting before stepping outside, especially early in the day and early in the evening. I’ve heard neighbors complain that this year is far worse than previous years and I’m in agreement. I suppose the rain/ sun/rain/sun/mist/sun/fog/sun combination is perfect for mosquito breeding grounds. So, what to do about these pesky little bloodsuckers?

One of the first things to do, which may not be possible depending on where you live and garden, is to empty out all standing water. That means tarps, saucers under pots, rain gutters, troughs with standing water, buckets, dog bowls, etc. Mosquitoes can breed in an incredibly small amount of water, such as a bottle cap. If you have necessary standing water, like a birdbath, you can use Bt, or Bacillus thuringiensis, which is deadly for mosquito larvae, but doesn’t harm wildlife, humans or birds. You can find Bt at your local nursery or hardware store.

It comes in bits, dunks and other forms. I like to set up a Bucket of Doom™ in spots around my property. Put a few inches of water in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket, then add some straw. Sprinkle a liberal amount of Bt bits, or part of a dunk, and the mosquitoes will lay their eggs in the bucket. The

larvae will perish. Make sure to replenish the Bt every couple of weeks or so.

Another way to deter mosquitoes is to cultivate plants they don’t care for. Plant a half wine barrel or large pot with some of the following: bee balm, marigolds, spotted geraniums, lavender, sweet fern, citronella, rosemary, garlic, sage or catnip. (Though, if you plant the last one, I’m not responsible for all the neighbor’s cats coming into your yard.)

According to an environmental science teacher at the University of New England, placing these in strategic spots in your yard can help deter the little suckers. It’s important to “activate” the plants by brushing up against them. This releases the chemicals that make it difficult for mosquitoes to navigate and find prey (such as your tender flesh). They suggest planting something in the middle of the pot that you harvest regularly, like basil, or tomatoes, so that you brush up against the plants regularly. Given the success of tomatoes (or lack thereof) here on the coast, I’d go with basil or some other herb you use regularly.

Another colorful way to deal with mosquitoes is to attract birds and other insects that love to dine on larvae or adult mosquitoes. Swallows (all kinds) provide great pest control. In my area, the swallows returned last month. Set up a house that’s designed for swallows, or allow the cliff swallows to build one of their mud nests on your soffit or the eaves of the house. Preferably not right over the front door, as they do what birds do. I love watching the Violet Green

Mosquito larvae in shallow water. File Swallows swoop over my front yard, garden and orchard. Barn swallows can consume up to 850 insects per day. Other birds that dine on adult mosquitoes include Yellow Warblers, Downy Woodpeckers, House Wrens, Baltimore Orioles and hummingbirds.

Encourage dragonflies to your yard, too, because in addition to eating adult mosquitoes, they also dine on the larvae.

Excellent ways to attract birds to your garden or yard include: planting native plants, never using broad-spectrum pesticides (they don’t just kill the “bad” bugs, they also kill all the beneficial ones, which have a much harder time bouncing back), providing shelter and cover for the birds, and keeping those cats indoors — or building a nice catio or cat run for them. (We have a cat run here at our place.)

Another excellent pest control critter is the bat. Some people freak out around bats but I promise they’re not going to fly into your hair. You can make a cozy spot for bats by putting up a bat house. According to Bat Conservation International, the bat houses should be mounted at least 10 feet above ground, and 12 to 20 feet is better.

of direct sunlight (if only partial day sun is available, morning sun is preferable). Bat houses should not be lit by bright lights, so installing near porch or security lights is generally a bad idea. Ideally, the houses will be within ¼ mile of a body of water.

You can even build your own bat house if you’re handy with a few power tools. Plans can be found at batcon.org.

If you choose to go the bat route, I encourage patience. We had three bat houses installed at the south end of our house more than a decade ago, and it took the bats a few years to decide that they’d set up house here. Now, I love going out in the early evening before dusk to watch the little insect munchers flit about over the garden and front yard. Little brown bats have been shown to devour more insects, including mosquitoes, than large brown bats. Fortunately, little brown bats are common in Humboldt County.

Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for me to go replenish my Buckets of Doom™.

I

don’t watch much TV, certainly not the news. This isn’t a pretentious flex, but more of a generational effect: The TV I grew up with either doesn’t exist anymore or I have grown out of it, as on-the-ground social media reporting and alternative news sources are far more reliable than what the cable companies and what’s left of the broadcast channels can offer. But there’s still the opportunity for engagement from time to time, especially since I take care of an elderly family member who lives with me and has found a way to watch the news in my living room. And holy shit, while not a lot shocks me these days, the “reporting” from the frontline of the resistance actions in Los Angeles against ICE and the police was horrendous. It reminded me of the Iraq War, with all the journalists embedded in the Green Zone with the U.S. military, where they were spoonfed State Department nuggets of sugary flavor pops to coat the imperial lies in the bloody wet center of each bite. In this case, the broadcaster was behind police lines, towing the official position and marveling at the tactics of the cops, while feigning ignorance of what the protestors were demanding, why they were there, or even more absurdly, what they were saying (I could clearly hear people yelling, “Fuck ICE,” and “Get out of our neighborhood,” in the background). This sort of TV is a lot of things, but it isn’t useful information, or journalism, beyond the offshoot of the entertainment industry that the general mainstream practice has become.

It’s obvious to anyone with eyes attached to a brain and a soul what’s going on, and it takes a fading, multibillion dollar industry to try to convince us otherwise.

This is people versus oppression and it isn’t a partisan issue. Gruesome Newsom is repeating what he did with the homeless sweeps, using the abuses of the far-right — whether the anti-democratic Supreme Court in the former case or the current administration of brainless ghouls in this one — to clamp down on a population of

conscience and righteous anger with a “kinder and gentler” anti-human junta of armed bozos.

I’ve said it before and here I go again: We aren’t voting our way out of this mess.

fieldnotes@northcoastjournal.com THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME. I always seem to preface discussions of Wes Anderson’s work with some sort of disclaimer or caveat. It’s as if I feel a need to justify — mostly to myself — my continuing fascination with his canon, and to acknowledge that, as a fan, I am still conflicted by some abiding, defining aspects of Anderson’s career. Part of this intentional distancing may come from an inchoate sense that, in encapsulating some thorny philosophical, sexual and socio-political notions in his work, he has exorcised those difficulties from his own personal life. It is an ill-advised thesis, knowing so little about Anderson’s life beyond the work, that he may have it all figured out.

An artist living his best life and becoming rich and famous doing it? Something must be amiss — or I’m a little jealous.

Anyway, it occurred to me as I was watching The Phoenicican Scheme that my reverence for and resentment of Anderson have long been twin impulses.

It has only been in recent years that I’ve realized my feelings on the work have more to do with the artist than the art.

Even in his (imagined) blithe acceptance of the backlash from the faithful, he remains unbending in his dedication to, and apparent enjoyment of, the exploration of his imagination. More often than not, that exploration ends him up on the red carpet at Cannes and the Academy Awards, where he admittedly looks perfectly at home.

He is a successful commercial artist, a holdover from a bygone era, which seems pretty cool.

Perhaps because I saw a handful of loathsome internet headlines deriding The Phoenican Scheme as Anderson’s “worst” movie to date, I was more prepared to embrace it than I have any of his work since 2007’s The Darjeeling Limited. (And yes, I’ve been there for all of them.) Having been inside the echo chamber of popular opinion and my own emotionality for a long time, I can’t help but wonder if I’m finally coming out the other side of it.

Scheme may be Anderson’s most self-encapsulated story yet, a mid-century

industrial espionage caper set among the shadowy world of the titans — a world constructed with many of the classic grace notes and motifs of Anderson’s career.

Of course the characters here travel by private plane, train and automobile. Of course they (all) have monogrammed luggage. This, more than any of the worlds he has so far created, is a rarefied space of its very own, built from the materials (be they sturdy or diaphanous) that have defined both his visual and narrative style.

Dogged by rumors and assassins and governments alike, Zsa-Zsa Korda (Benicio Del Toro) remains steadfast in his commitment to what may be his last, grand international project (see title above). He is the father of nine boys, some by biology, some by adoption (the ratio is unclear), but only one girl, Liesl (Mia Threapleton).

Liesl intends to take her vows as a nun, but Zsa-Zsa disrupts her life by appointing her sole heir to and executor of his fortune, simultaneously carting her around the world in his somewhat frantic attempts to shore up and finalize his scheme.

As distilled an elixir as Scheme is, it still manages to venture into some more daring territory, including brief sequences in which members of the Anderson stock company serve as Biblical judges of Zsa-Zsa’s acts. It’s nesting doll stuff, not unlike Asteroid City (2024), but there is a level of concurrent restraint and baroque abundance that, while it couldn’t come from anyone else, feels like an acknowledgement of criticism and an exclamatory advance. FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK: BALLERINA For world-building (and destruction) of an entirely different sort, we turn now to Ana de Armas in the unnecessary but deeply satisfying Ballerina. She, Eve, the daughter of Wickian super-fighters, was rescued in childhood from killers and a life in institutions by one Winston (Ian McShane) himself. Under the roof of the Russka Roma, she trains as a dancer and a counter-operative, a gun for hire on the right side of history.

All of which is fun but more than anyone reading this may need to know. This is a grand-scale revenge barnburner, one that levels up the mayhem of even John Wick with gleeful hand-grenadery and close-quarters flamethrower fights.

For the faithful, this is a deeply satisfying addition to, and expansion of, this cinematic universe. Plot-wise, it may seem a little light when measured against the totality of the Wick myth, but in some cases less is more. At the public hearing, the Board of Directors shall hear and consider any objections or protests to the report. At the conclusion of the public hearing the Board of Directors may adopt or revise the delinquent charges, penalties and interest, and determine to collect such delinquent charges, penalties and interest upon the County Property Tax Roll each affected parcel of property for the ensuing fiscal year. The Board of Director shall make its determination on each affected parcel by resolution and its determination shall be final.

On or before August 10 of each year following such determination by resolution of the Board, the General Manager shall thereafter file with the County Auditor a copy of the report filed with the Board of Directors and the resolution adopted by the Board at such public hearing, and request that the delinquent charges, penalties and interest be added to and collected with property tax on each affected parcel of property described in the written report and resolution at the same time and in the same manner as property taxes are collected by the County Auditor. Government Code section 61115(b) directs the County auditor to place such delinquent charges, penalties and interest on the tax bills for each affected parcel of real property listed in the District report and resolution and collect the charges and penalties in the same manner as property taxes for the fiscal year in which such District report and resolution are filed with the County Auditor.

Kerima Christiane Furniss passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in Eureka, California, at the age of 65. Born in Berlin on June 1, 1959, Kerima crossed oceans to find her true home and loves in Arcata, California, where the welcoming spirit of the community and the strength of her Universal Sufi spiritual path sustained her.

A gifted therapist and devoted social worker, Kerima spent much of her career caring for others, most notably at the very hospice where she would one day be surrounded by love and comfort in her final days. Her life’s work was never just a job—it was a calling, an expression of her deep empathy and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others.

She was also a gifted visual artist. Formally trained in pottery, Kerima’s creative voice extended into painting and mixed-media work, reflecting her deep connection to nature, spirit, and emotion. Her pieces will be on display at her celebration of life, offering a final glimpse into the world as she saw it—vibrant, textured, and full of quiet beauty.

She is survived by her step-children, Megan and Liam Furniss; her former spouse, Michael Furniss; her parents, Rudolf and Uta Dees; her siblings, Jeanne and Mario; and her beloved Australian Shepherd, Mukkala.

Kerima will be remembered for her grace in motion. She loved to dance—whether in ceremony, celebration, or solitude. She often skillfully led the Dances of Universal Peace in Arcata. She was a traveler at heart, always open to new places and people, carrying with her a quiet curiosity and reverence for life in all its forms.

In her final year, Kerima was held in care by an extraordinary circle of friends—an extended chosen family who walked beside her with devotion, laughter, tenderness, and strength. Their love was a reflection of the community she spent her life building, and the profound impact she had on those around her.

Her presence was peaceful and grounding, her compassion boundless. She listened deeply, loved generously, and walked through the world with a softness that made space for others to heal.

A celebration of Kerima’s life will be held in Arcata at a later date.

Joanna Miranda Walstrom, our beloved daughter, sister, mother, Gammy, fiancé, friend to all, and radiant light, left us too soon on May 27, 2025, wrapped in the love of her family. Born on December 10, 1972, in Humboldt County to Steve and Lynn Walstrom, Joanna grew up with her older brother Jeff and cousins like Bob and Tracy. Her childhood was filled with laughter, adventures, and a warmth that made her the heart of our family.

Joanna was a star in high school, dominating the basketball court and softball field with her fierce spirit and infectious smile. She lived for the outdoors—camping under starry skies, basking in the sun by the river, and turning every family moment into something unforgettable. As a devoted daughter to Steve and Lynn, she shared daily calls, home-cooked meals, and an unbreakable bond that anchored her life. As a sister to Jeff, she was a loyal companion, sharing inside jokes and endless support. As a mom to Shaylene, Tamara, Jordyn, and Thomas, she was our confidante, our biggest fan, and our safe haven. Shaylene and Tamara were her heart’s closest companions, sharing late-night talks, endless laughs, and a bond that nothing could break. Her grandkids—Ryker, Cannon, Shaniyah, Brlynn, Zoey, Maverick, and Miles—were her greatest joy. She’d cheer louder than anyone at their football games, wrestling matches, or baseball games, her proud smile lighting up the stands. At home, she’d bake the best sugar cookies, slathered with the most delicious frosting ever, just to see her grandkids’ faces glow with delight.

Joanna’s love extended to her soulmate and fiancé, Tom Hawkins, whose side she cherished through quiet evenings, shared dreams, and countless adventures. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and plans for a future that will forever hold his heart. As a friend to all, Joanna had a gift for making everyone feel cherished, from lively family barbecues to singing off-key to her favorite country tunes, her warmth turning strangers into family. She’d want us to keep sharing her stories— how she danced with her daughters and grandkids in the living room, baked sugar cookies with that perfect frosting, or cheered with unmatched passion at their games—so her grandkids always feel her presence.

Joanna leaves behind her soulmate Tom Hawkins, her parents Steve and Lynn, her brother Jeff, her kids Shaylene, Tamara (Son In Law Sterling), Jordyn (Son in Law Rowen) and Thomas, her grandkids, and a community of friends who will carry her light. Her love will live on in every story we tell. A celebration of her life will be held on June 8, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Miranda’s Rescue. Instead of flowers, please donate towards a special bench in her memory or share a memory of Joanna with her grandkids, so her spirit continues to shine.
