By Ron Moorhead in the compact sedan world, one might think Mazda has neglected the category.

However, those in the know are happy to realize nothing could be further from the truth. The folks at Mazda have taken the category very seriously and have turned the Mazda3 into a contender worthy of plenty of attention.

While the 2020 Mazda3 sees few changes following a major redo in 2019, it is a vehicle that is both practical and stimulating. Powered by a tried and true 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 186 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque, this compact can excite. The Mazda3 will also keep you on the road with an EPA fuel economy rating of 26 city and 35 highway with front-wheel drive. Our AWD test Mazda3 only suffered a slight drop to 25 mpg city and 33 highway. Frankly, we were happy to trade the slight drop in fuel economy to have all-wheel drive stability.

Power is transferred to the road via

a six-speed automatic transmission. We are a bit disappointed that Mazda has offered the manual transmission on only one model, premium hatchbacks with front-wheel drive. Though the automatic transmissions are so good and have a manual mode, we do long for more manual gearboxes.

The 2020 Mazda3 personifies what Mazda seems to hold dear to its development of its vehicles: Study the market, build a vehicle that exceeds expectations, going just a bit over what is expected. We know many critics say you just can’t say a car is fun to drive. We never could get any of those folks to tell us their take on this claim because for us we know when a vehicle fits into our “fun to drive” criteria.

OK, we know that the Mazda3 is categorized as an economy compact but nothing says it must be boring.

The 2020 Mazda3 is available in three trim levels, although there are several ways you can outfit those trim levels depending on your wants and needs.

Moving up through the models are the Select, Preferred and Premium.

Most buyers have an emotional reaction to the vehicles they are drawn toward, and we think the 2020 Mazda3 draws us under its spell with the aggressive front-end design. Sloping hood and front fenders highlight the large, intimidating grille that brings a European luxury car look. The styling continues through the higher belt line to the rear flip of the trunk lid that gives a slight spoiler look. The rear view is not quite as captivating as the front, yet it is attractive none the less.

Mazda has taken the Mazda3 upscale with the interior, adding more attractive trim along with dash and side panels that look and feel much more at home in a luxury vehicle. Mazda is smart in taking that tack, as owners are wanting more accommodating interiors. After all, that is where most of us spend the majority of time with our vehicles. The front bucket seats are firm without be-

ing stiff and the side bolsters hold driver and passenger firmly in place even during sporty driving, Though rear seat legroom is compromised, we were able to find a reasonably comfortable driver position while giving our rear seat passenger increased legroom. One must remember this is a compact automobile, not a large sedan.

All Mazda3 models are equipped with Mazda’s i-Activsense driver-assist and active safety features, including lane departure with lane assist rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams and adaptive cruise control. Along with the long list of safety features, all 2020 Mazda3 models also get an 8.8-inch info-

tainment display that thankfully is controlled by an easily manipulated rotary dial located on the center console. Also, interior features include two USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that are included on all but the entry level.

Every Mazda3 also has a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster that is reconfigurable to show speed, vehicle data or driver-assist system status.

We seem to always come away from our test drives of the 2020 Mazda3 with the feeling of appreciation for the comfort, ability and performance we experience with this compact. That is why it is on our list of recommendations when asked about compact vehicles. ✦ Copyright © 2020 autoreviewsplus.com

FISHING THE NORTH COAST

Rain and Steelhead Both on the Horizon

By Kenny Priest Winter steelhead season has yet to take off on the North Coast but that could soon change. A pretty sizeable storm should put all of the coastal rivers on the rise, and hopefully open them to fishing. And more rain is on the way this week according to the National Weather Service. Steady rain and pulse flows are just what we need to entice some steelhead from the salt. If the rains come as predicted, the Smith and Chetco should be in prime shape sometime this week.

The Eel, South Fork Eel, Van Duzen and Mad will all see flows begin to rise over the weekend of Dec. 12. The Mad could open early this week, and the southern rivers should be right behind it. Once all of the rivers crest and begin to recede to fishable levels, we should see the first wave of winter steelhead. After another tough late-fall salmon season, seeing the rivers loaded with bright steelhead sure would be a welcome sight.

Weather ahead The seven-day forecast is looking good for steelhead anglers. An atmospheric river is predicted for the weekend, which will put all of the coastal rivers on the rise. “Lighter rain is possible on Thursday and Friday [Dec. 10 and 11], with the heavier rainfall totals coming over the weekend,” said Kathleen Zontos of Eureka’s National Weather Service.

“Sunday and into Monday should produce light rain, with a potential small break on Tuesday. The next chance of wet weather is next Wednesday through Friday. The seven-day forecast ending next Tuesday is calling for 3 to 5 inches in the Smith Basin. Here locally, the Mad and lower Eel could see 1 to 2 inches.

Further up the South Fork Eel, a half to an inch of rain is possible. From Dec.13 to Dec. 21, the probability of above normal precipitation is predicted.”

Mad River Steelhead Derby to start Jan. 1 T he Nor-Cal Guides and Sportsmen’s Association (NCGASA) is hosting its second annual Mad River Steelhead Derby from Jan. 1 through March 31. Anglers must be signed up prior to Jan. 1 to be eligible to win cash and prizes. Only hatchery steelhead can be entered. The largest steelhead wins $500, second place $300 and third place $150. A youth division winner (16 and under) wins a $150 tackle gift card.

In addition, anglers who submit a winning video of their catch in action get a $100 gift card to Bucksport Sporting Goods. Anglers can sign up online at www.ncgasa.org or in person at RMI Outdoors and Bucksport.

Big swells have kept anglers at the docks in Brookings and likely will through the weekend reports Andy Martin of Brookings Fishing Charters. He said, “Last week, sport crabbers did well in shallow water, with large crabs that were full of meat.

Rough weather has made bottom fishing tough. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will adopt the 2021 bottom fishing regulations on Friday [Dec. 11].”

The Rivers Other than the Smith, all North Coast rivers subjected to low flow fishing closures, including the main and South Fork Eel, Mad, Redwood Creek, and

Van Duzen were closed to fishing as of Wednesday, Dec 9. Sections of rivers that are open include the main stem Eel River from the paved junction of Fulmor Road to its mouth. The Mad River from the mouth to 200 yards upstream is closed until Jan. 1, 2021. Be sure and call the low-flow closure hotline, 822-3164, to determine if the river is open prior to fishing. CDFW will make information public by a telephone recorded message

Smith The Smith opened back up to fishing Sunday, Dec. 6, and remained open as of Wednesday. Another closure is possible before the weekend as flows drop. A big storm is expected by Saturday, Dec. 12, however. Flows are predicted to peak at 8,800 cubic feet per second on Sunday night on the Jed Smith gauge. Boat pressure has been light but some kings were caught on the lower river last week.

Riffles between the Outhouse and the Outfitters were holding quite a few halfpounders along with an occasional adult steelhead. The storm over the weekend should push the rest of the kings upriver and bring in the first big wave of steelhead.

Mad The Mad is forecasted to reach 1,400 cfs early Monday, Dec. 14. Minimum flows to open the river to fishing are 200 cfs. For flow predictions, visit www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/graphicalRVF. php?id=ARCC1.

Main stem Eel The main Eel is predicted to rise starting Saturday, Dec. 12, and could open to fishing on Monday. Will likely be muddy for some time. South Fork Eel The South Fork is predicted to rise beginning early Saturday, Dec. 12, and will probably be dirty through the weekend. If flow predictions are correct, could open to fishing on Monday.

Van Duzen The Van Duzen is forecasted to rise

Chetco/Elk/Sixes Steelhead are showing up in good early season numbers on the Chetco, with adult fish now spread throughout the system, reports Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing. “The best fishing has been at Social Security Bar, where at least half a dozen adult steelhead were caught on Sunday, but steelhead can be seen below spawning salmon all the way to the upper river,” said Martin. “A few bright kings are still around, with lots of salmon still spawning. Drift boaters are seeing steelhead in the tailouts from Ice Box to the head of tide. The river likely will blow out this weekend but should be

Are All Farmers Held to the Same Standards as Cannabis Growers?

Are all farmers held to the same standards as cannabis growers?

Question: I understand that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) plays a regulatory role in commercial cannabis operations, because poor grow practices harm the environment and California’s fish and wildlife. But are farmers of other legal crops – say, almonds, or wine grapes – held to the same standards? (Don) Answer: Any farming activity that has the potential to impact California’s native fish, wildlife and plant resources must comply with the laws and regulations in place to protect them. This is true for farm-to-fork operations and commercial cannabis growers. Anyone requir-

ing a Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement from CDFW are subject to the same requirements and fees.

However, there are regulatory differences between cannabis farming and other agricultural industries. For example, commercial size cannabis cultivation requires a state license from the California Department of Food and Agriculture and farming without it could result in a felony charge. And, each county has adopted their own land use ordinances that address where, how and if cannabis cultivation can take place.

Along with this, the Legislature’s findings in Fish and Game Code section 12029 concluded the environmental impacts associated with illegal cannabis cultivation can have a detrimental effect on fish

and wildlife and their habitats, which are held in trust by the state. This means CDFW is obligated by statute to protect the environment and regulate commercial cannabis cultivation activity.

Another important difference between commercial cannabis cultivation and other agriculture crops is the typical farming location. Grapes and almonds can usually be found in zoned agricultural areas as opposed to cannabis cultivation, which still occurs deep in the hills. Many threatened or endangered fish and wildlife live in these remote areas, which can be greatly impacted by cannabis farming practices such as water diversions, pesticide use and land clearing. Between urban encroachment, wildfires and drought years, California’s

native fish and wildlife have faced a lot of pressure and when you add unregulated cannabis farming activities on top of it, it exacerbates the problem.

State regulations help protect the environment and provide consumer safety in this newly regulated market. Other highly regulated activities such as hunting and fishing, driving, or alcohol and spirits production also requires licensing and is subject to regulatory compliance monitoring too.

Status of roadkill bill

Question: I was wondering what the status of the law/regulations are that was passed about a year ago making it legal for folks who have hit and killed wildlife with their car to harvest the meat. I have found that some news stories say it’s legal, and others are saying the implementing regulations are still being promulgated. (Aaron) Answer: At this time, it is still illegal to pick up roadkill for any purpose in the state of California. The bill you’re referring to is SB 395 (Archuleta, Chapter 869, Statutes of 2019), which authorized the California Fish and Game Commission (Commission), upon funding by the Legislature, to establish a pilot program to issue wildlife salvage permits to pick up wild game meat that was accidentally killed as the result of a vehicle collision.

The program established by the bill has not yet been funded by the Legislature through the California budget process. The Commission cannot develop the regulations, and CDFW cannot implement the program, until the bill is funded. Once funding is provided, both the Commission and CDFW are prepared to start the regulation process.

CDFW did not have an official position on SB 395. If you support or oppose funding the bill, you can reach out to your state representative to provide feedback.

Target shooting outdoors

Question: Is it illegal to shoot targets recreationally along the San Joaquin River as long as you do it responsibly? (Tom)

Answer: CDFW does not regulate target shooting nor keep track of all the potential target shooting areas available to the public. There are numerous resources available to find recreational shooting areas, including CDFW’s R3 webpage. This issue basically comes down to county shooting ordinances and landowner permission. You will find most cities do not allow discharge of firearms within their city limits, so contact the local Sheriff ’s office to see what county areas may be open.

Keeping surf perch in an aquarium?

Question: Is it legal to take live finfish caught in the surf such as barred surf perch and place them in a fish tank in a private setting at a private residence?

(Patrick) Answer: No, under a sport fishing license this is not legal in California.

You can find the provisions of the marine aquaria pet trade in the California Fish and Game Code, sections 8596-8597.

Transporting live finfish is also prohibited as per California Code of Regulations Title 14, section 1.63. F

5 Tips for a Safer Digital Experience This Holiday Shopping Season (statepoint) Online holiday shopping is booming this year, as more consumers avoid brick-and-mortar stores in an effort to socially distance.

According to a national consumer survey by Experian, 62 percent of shoppers will buy from the comfort of their computers. But with many worried about being a victim of identity theft and fraud, it may not be such a jolly experience.

In fact, 57 percent of those surveyed feel there’s a greater risk this year of identity theft because of COVID-19, while 18 percent of survey respondents have

5. Don’t use a debit card: Credit cards offer much more protection for online purchases than debit cards. If fraud occurs, the money is not gone from an associated checking account and a claim can be filed with their card issuer.

• Never leave loose pills on the counter or tables and keep medicines in child-resistant containers until right before taking them. To a young child, pills can look like candy, and it’s important to keep them out of children’s reach and sight.

• Keep young children safe by putting all medicines carried with you, including those in purses, bags, pockets, or pill organizers, out of their sight and reach.

• More than 80% of grandparents say they keep their medication in the same place as usual when their grandchildren visit their house, and 72% keep them in their purse or bag when they visit their grandchildren, according to a University of Michigan poll. Whether you’re a grandparent or another visitor to a home with children, don’t be shy about asking for a safe place to put your medicines (including those kept in purses, bags or pockets) that’s out of reach and sight of curious young kids.

7 Tips for Hosting a Virtual Holiday Cookie Exchange (StatePoint) It may take a little extra time and creativity, but a holiday cookie exchange can be held virtually and it’s worth the effort according to experts.

“There’s a famous quote, ‘If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ It’s so true for me as I find great joy in developing easy, flavorful recipes,” says Cindy Gilbert, McCormick Test Kitchen chef. “My friends have come to me for years requesting tips and tricks, and over 20 years ago, they anointed me the annual holiday cookie exchange leader. Dental Visits Are Essential Health Care, Here’s Why (StatePoint) If maintaining good health is top of mind these days, as it is for many, be sure to factor dental hygiene into the equation. Medical experts say that a healthy mouth is critical to whole-body health, and warn that during the COVID-19 pandemic, certain stress-related oral health concerns are on the rise.

Thanks to ADA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, dentists have increased their already strong infection control and office sterilization protocols when treating patients.

“Routine dental exams during the pandemic can help keep your mouth and body healthy. In addition, dentists can sometimes spot signs suggestive of medical issues, alerting you to the need for medical follow-up,” says Dr. Boghosian.

According to the ADA, here’s why you should be seeing your dentist regularly, and insights into how oral and overall health are connected: • The COVID-19 pandemic has been a tremendous source of anxiety and stress, which makes it no surprise that since its onset, a majority of dentists in an ADA Health Policy Institute survey report a rise in stress-related oral health conditions in their patients. If you are waking with a tired or sore jaw, find you’re grinding your teeth or have a chipped or cracked tooth, a dentist can help.

• Dentists’ areas of care extend beyond teeth, gums and supporting bone to include the muscles of the head, neck and jaw, the tongue, salivary glands and the nervous system of the head, neck and other areas. When appropriate, dentists can take samples of tissue to screen for chronic or infectious diseases, and even oral cancer. Catching oral cancer early reduces the risk of your being among the 10,030 people nationwide whose lives are claimed annually by the disease.

You take a great big ol’ tarp and inside it you put your blankets and a piller and such. How many a-them blankets do you use? Wellsir, how cold is it going to plunge down to tonight?
