Farewell, Ron Moorhead By Kathy Jo Lucky
Ron Moorhead Facebook
ron moorhead, longtime writer and owner of GlenMoor Media Group, died Feb. 4 of pancreatic cancer. He died in his sleep, at home with his wife, Cathy. It was very sudden, just two months after being diagnosed, and he did not suffer. Ron attended the University of Colorado before moving to Willits in 1982. He was a feature writer, covering the automotive industry for 30 years. Ron loved auto racing, traveling, doing road tests all over the country and going to car shows. He attended the automobile manufacturers big showcases each year and wrote reviews on the newest

the “front door” to the community and put out the welcome mat. In an article by Adrian Baumann published in the Willits News in 2015, Moorhead said he knew the importance of being involved in the community, “If your next door neighbor is healthy — you become healthier; so if your competition becomes stronger, you become stronger, the whole street or the whole block becomes more active and you become more vibrant because people are coming to that block!” I met Ron while calling on Auto Mart for The Trader. He and Jim were great buddies, and Jim had mentioned to me that Ron was a writer and wrote articles for Car and Driver and other major car magazines. I asked Ron if he’d consider writing for The Trader and he said yes. My business partner Bruce Proctor and I were thrilled to have Ron’s articles for our budding little magazine and Ron was great to work with. He provided his articles to us through email. They were always top notch, on time and included CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 →

car and truck models. He also wrote travel and adventure stories. Ron Moorhead’s work was featured in major car magazines nationally, in The Trader magazine locally and online. Ron was also very active in his hometown of Willits. He was a member of the Willits Chamber of Commerce since 1983 and Chamber President for 18 years. Jim Montalvo, owner of Auto Mart with his wife, Judi, was a longtime friend. He said, “I’ve known Ron since I first moved to Willits 34 years ago. He owned Willits Automotive and AAA Towing then and I was his tow truck driver. He was a great guy and a wonderful boss, extremely knowledgeable, especially about anything automotive. He got an offer he couldn’t refuse for that business and eventually sold it. We’ve remained good friends for all of these years.” Ron Moorhead was a big supporter of community activities that brought folks into town. He saw the chamber as

pictures. The only time he was late was when he was out of town at a major car show or road testing a new model. We looked forward every year to the articles from the big car shows, usually in Las Vegas. He sent pictures and reviews of the newest models released for the year. Our car dealers loved him. Ron Moorhead is survived by his wife, Cathy Moorhead, his children Annie Smith, Keith Smith, Jeff Buckley (Scotty Moorhead), Aaron Sanders, Cory Moorhead, and many friends and fans. There is no service planned for now because of the pandemic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to the Willits Chamber of Commerce for a bench in honor of Ron Moorhead. The bench will be placed at the Chamber Office, 299 E. Commercial St., Willits, California, 95490. F

Reburying Pismo Clams
Question: What is the correct method for reburying Pismo clams that are not of legal size? Answer: Pismo clams are an iconic species that have recently become more prevalent on beaches from Santa Cruz to San Diego due to several years of good recruitment. Because they bury in shallow sand, usually 2 to 8 inches, they are frequently encountered by people walking along beaches of orsdigging in the sand. e n Although it is currently i ifle legal to harvest l Lclams l R u Pismo recreationally, legal-sized F gton clams are not common. must be 4.5 inches wide south of the Monterey/San Luis Obispo county line and five inches wide north of this line, per California Code of Regulations, Title 14, section 29.4. Any clams which have a size limit and are not retained must be immediately reburied where they were found. It may take some time for clams to rebury themselves, leaving them vulnerable to the elements and predators such as birds. The proper way to rebury a Pismo clam is to place the clam with the hinge ligament (the dark bump where the two shells connect) upward and towards the ocean in a hole that is at least two inches deep, and then cover the clam with sand. Reburying undersized clams will increase survival and help the population expand.

What’s the Best Way to Rebury Pismo Clams?
Question: I was fishing in Turlock Lake and watched two ducks paddle by my line. Before I could do anything, one of the ducks dipped underwater, found my baited hook and tried to take the bait. It hooked itself on accident. I reeled it in, and it took three of us to carefully remove the hook from its bill. I let it go, and it looked fine, but I wondered: I have a hunting license, my federal and state stamps, and we’re in duck season—could I have kept the duck? (Jeremy) Answer: We’re glad you released the duck. Even though it was an accident, taking a duck by hooking it is not an authorized method of take (see California Code of Regulations, Title 14, section 507) and keeping it would have been illegal. Accidentally catching waterfowl by hook and line happens on occasion, although usually in parks with water-

fowl that have developed more domesticated behavior characteristics. If that happens, the person should remove the hook and release the duck immediately. However, sometimes the duck may take the hook in a manner that makes it too risky for an untrained person to remove without potentially causing further injury. In that case, you may want to notify the nearest Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility. They are more likely to have the proper tools and training to help.

Question: I’m interested in hunting coyote but can’t find the regulations on coyote hunting. Can you point me in the right direction? (Brandon) Answer: Coyote are listed among the nongame animals that may be taken year-round and in any number, per California Code of Regulations, Title 14, section 472. Coyote may be taken at any time with a few restrictions. They may only be taken between one-half hour before sunrise and one-half hour after sunset in certain geographic locations as listed in California Code of Regulations, Title 14, section 474(a). Coyote may be taken in any manner except by poison, use of bait and with certain trap restrictions. Information about hunting nongame animals with traps can be found in California Code of Regulations, Title 14, sections 461-480 and sections 4000-4012, 4152 and 4180 of the California Fish and Game Code. Coyote may be taken with the use and aid of electronic calls and with directional lights in accordance with Title 14, section 264 and 264.5. A valid hunting license and non-lead ammunition is required to take coyote.

cations around my property. Last month I noticed one of the signs was gone. I replaced the sign, and now it’s gone again, which makes me think someone may have taken it intentionally. It’s only a sign, but this would be theft right? Answer: There’s a law in the California Fish and Game Code (FGC) that applies more to this situation than petty theft. FGC 2018 states, among other things, that it is unlawful for any person to maliciously tear down, mutilate or destroy any sign, signboard or other notice forbidding hunting or
trespass on land. Hopefully your situation doesn’t involve a malicious act. However, whether or not you are confident it’s malicious, you may want to think about hiding a trail camera that is pointed at the sign to see if you can catch the perpetrator. If you find suspicious activity, contact your local law enforcement agency. If you have a question for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, please feel free to ask us via email at CalOutdoors@wildlife.ca.gov. ✦

Helpful Winter Weather Tips From the Meteorologists (StatePoint) Preparing for unpredictable winter weather? Take stock of your home, vehicle and planning tools to ensure your family stays safe and warm all winter long. Luckily, AccuWeather’s expert meteorologists know a thing or two about predicting the unexpected. They shared their top winter tips.
Stay Safe on the Road T ravel i n g th i s w i n t e r ? T h e AccuWeather app’s MinuteCast forecast can help you predict when to hit the road. It provides a constantly updating minute-by-minute look at precipitation over the next two hours (soon to be expanded to four) locally and at your destination. AccuWeather meteorologists make sure they’re prepped for the road before leaving. “If your car’s snow accessories have been sitting for a long time, it may be wise to make sure it’s in proper working order,” recommends senior meteorologist, Paul Pastelok. This may include
checking whether it’s time for an oil change. In snowy climates, outfit your car with winter tires, which can withstand winter weather more effectively than all-season tires. Whether or not you’re traveling, ready your car by monitoring tire pressure, testing your car battery, keeping an eye on windshield and wiper blades and adding a coat of wax if you can.
Get Cozy at Home Channel your inner meteorologist to keep the house safe. AccuWeather meteorologists have some simple hacks for preventing messes such as frozen pipes, broken radiators, flooding and leaks. “Replace worn out weather stripping around windows and doors,” says AccuWeather senior meteorologist, David H. Dombek. “Also, ensure your rain gutters are cleared of leaves and other debris. Clogged gutters can lead to problems when it comes to snow, ice and below freezing temperatures.”

To prevent clogged drains, you can make a simple, environmentally-friendly mixture of salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar, then pour it into drains once a week. Opening cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom can help circulate warmer air around plumbing. In frigid conditions, let a bit of water drip from faucets, especially where pipes aren’t insulated. You can also unhook garden hoses before the first hard freeze to prevent busted pipes. For older furnaces that may need replacing, schedule a tune-up. Senior meteorologist Alan Reppert also makes sure to clear leaves and snow away from his heat pump to ensure air flow. “Anything in the way of air flow can affect your heating system’s efficiency,” he notes. To track rain, snow, cloud cover and potentially dangerous conditions so you can get the house winterized, use the mapping features on AccuWeather.com and on the app.

Plan Ahead to Dine Outside With COVID-19 cases on the rise and restrictions on indoor dining in effect nationwide, dining out can require advanced planning. When eating outdoors, factor in the variables associated with unpredictable winter weather. AccuWeather’s forecast provides info needed to plan a week out — plenty of time to make that reservation. M e t e o rol o g i s t a n d e m e r g e n cy preparedness specialist Becky DePodwin also recommends checking AccuWeather’s RealFeel Temperature to determine what it’s actually going to feel like tableside. This can help you decide whether to venture outside, bring a blanket or opt for takeout. “Oftentimes in winter, especially if there’s any amount of wind going on, the temperature’s not going to be an adequate indi-
cation of what it feels like outside,” she says.
Get an Insider View A one-size-fits-all weather report isn’t sufficient when it comes to planning. AccuWeather’s Winter Center page provides detailed winter weather predictions just like a meteorologist would, with everything from the newly added ice accumulation tracker to the wind speed calculator. You can also find forecasts designed for specific interests and needs, including the outlook for snow sports and longer-range looks at the months ahead. All of AccuWeather’s winter prep resources are available at AccuWeather. com/en/us/Winter-Weather. No matter what your winter plans are, you can plan with confidence like a meteorologist, for a safe, warm winter. ✦

8 Tips for a Successful Home Renovation (StatePoint) Thinking of remodeling your home? From safety and security to product and contractor selection, there are many factors to consider. Follow these eight remodeling tips to help minimize hassles during a renovation: 1. Create a budget. Create a project budget and set a spending limit. Whether you plan to utilize savings, home equity loan, line of credit or free up funds through refinancing, now is the time to identify how you will finance the project, and how much you want to spend. 2. Prepare the house. Before work starts, clear all spaces where professionals will be working, as well as walkways they will use to access these areas. Remove valuables and breakables to avoid damage and cover furniture in areas where paint or dust could harm upholstery. Keep other considerations in mind. For example, if you’re renovating the kitchen, you may need to create a temporary food prep area. 3. Work with reputable professionals. When selecting a contractor, be sure they have references, certification and an understanding of the project. For example, when tackling window and door projects, Andersen Windows, Inc. recommends hiring an Andersen Certified Contractor to do the job. These contractors receive product training, installation resources, offer an exclusive 2-year limited installation warranty, and their expertise and experience in an extensive range of residential projects means they’re able to capture your vision for your home and work with you to provide the right products. Bottom line: working with reputable professionals makes all the difference in the quality of the work and the materials

used to complete the project. 4. Schedule wisely. Choose a timeframe for your home renovation that best fits your busy schedule. Keep in mind that unforeseen circumstances can sometimes cause delays. Build this into the timeline so you’re not taken by surprise.
5. Address safety. Talk to your contractor about what COVID-19 measures they practice to help keep customers and employees safe. Find out whether they’re following CDC guidelines for businesses, including always wearing a mask, social distancing whenever possible and frequent hand washing. Also,

ask if they offer virtual consultations that allow you to start the process contact-free. 6. Add or update your security system. With professionals frequently coming in and out of your home, a home renovation may be a good time to add or update your security system with reprogrammable smart locks. Offering more convenience and greater control, the Yale Assure Lock for Andersen patio and entry doors for example, is a sleek, key-free entry lock that makes it easy to grant access to contractors for limited periods of time, lock and unlock doors from anywhere and monitor from afar. 7. Communicate openly and effectively. If a renovation is done correctly, you may never need to repeat the process. This makes open and honest communication with your home renovation team essential. Be sure to share your vision and to ask questions as they arise. At the same time, expect the professionals working with you to communicate regularly and address all your concerns. 8. Get a return on your investment. Prioritize projects that will potentially raise the resale value of your home. According to FortuneBuilders, the top 10 greatest returns on investment for home renovations include bathroom and kitchen remodels, landscaping, replacing entry doors and replacing windows. It also helps to select products that come with transferrable warranties. This will give your property a tangible leg-up on the market when it’s time to sell. ✦

CAREERS
Why Getting Tech Savvy Doesn’t Have to be Hard (StatePoint) More than 12 million people are currently employed in techrelated occupations in the U.S., either as information technology (IT) professionals or employees of technology companies. Yet employer demand for tech workers is still strong in many markets and industries, including technology, financial services, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, government and education. Unfortunately, misperceptions about tech occupations persist. People assume that in such jobs, you’re relegated to working alone writing software code or that you need to be a math genius or
have an advanced academic degree to even get your foot in the door. These misperceptions can discourage qualified candidates from exploring career options in the IT field. “Today’s IT professional plays a leading role in virtually every business and industry, identifying innovation and technologies that can determine the future of an organization,” says John McGlinchey, executive vice president for global certification with CompTIA, a nonprofit association for the IT indus-

try. “Companies are eager to hire people who communicate effectively, are comfortable working as part of a team and are creative in identifying how to use technology to make a business more efficient and profitable.” In fact, 62% of executives surveyed for CompTIA’s “Workforce and Learning Trends 2020” report ranked soft skills such as relationship building, persuasion, integrity and confidence with equal importance to hard techni-

cal skills when it came to hiring for their tech workforce. For anyone thinking about a career in tech, the best first step is to learn more about the technologies of today and tomorrow, and the occupations associated with these innovations. Many free resources are available. Here are three examples: The Future of Tech (www.futureoftech.org) is a growing library of resources on what’s new and what’s next in the world of technology. Topics such as artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, big data and the internet of things are highlighted on the site, which is designed for anyone interested in learning more about technologies that are shaping the way we live and work. The IT Career Roadmap (www.comptia.org/content/it-careers-path-roadmap) offers insights into a variety of career paths, including tech support, networking, cybersecurity, data and software and web development. The IT Salary Calculator (https:// www.comptia.org/content/it-salary-calculator) allows you to explore salary estimates for different tech occupations at different levels of expertise. The calculator includes salary data from 400 different metropolitan areas covering 85% of the U.S. population, from an IT support specialist in Portland, Maine ($52,750) to a cybersecurity analyst in Portland, Ore. ($101,530). “If you don’t believe technology is a viable career choice, consider all of the things you’ve done today that are made possible by technology — from the car you drive and the streaming entertainment channels you enjoy to a telehealth visit with your doctor and the ease and efficiency of online banking,” says McGlinchey. The IT field is no longer a world of pocket protectors and motherboards. With more people using more devices than ever before to stay connected to one another, industry experts say that today’s IT workforce is open for business for anyone with great curiosity, creativity, personality and versatility. ✦

Tips to Make this the Year You Quit Smoking for Good (StatePoint) Is “quitting smoking” on the top of your list of goals for the year? Was it last year, too? Here are some insights from those in the know into kicking this habit to the curb for good. “They say old habits are hard to break, and when it comes to my dad’s addictive smoking habits, I couldn’t agree more,” says Linh Nguyen, the Houston style, fitness and mom blogger behind A Beautiful RAWR. “He knows smoking is detrimental to his health, but the thought of not having it be part of his daily routine has been a challenging, intimidating, and in some ways, scary idea for him to grasp.” Nguyen’s family has resolved to help her father make this the year he quits smoking for good. For those 18 and older, consider these tips and insights she is sharing into the process. • Identif y your motivations: Quitting a smoking habit can be very difficult, but knowing why you want to quit can help you stick with it when things get tough. “I think the biggest motivator for my dad to quit this year is our growing family. His grandkids are his world and I know he wants to be around to watch them grow up. To do that, we’re all making better choices for a healthier, longer life,” says Nguyen. • Get Help: Quitting is often associated with challenging physical symptoms. However, products that deliver controlled, therapeutic doses of nicotine can relieve cravings and help with difficult physical withdrawal symptoms. “One of the biggest ways I’m supporting my dad is stocking him up on effective, pharmacist-recommended smoking cessation products from Walgreens, which are much more affordable compared to similar products,” says Nguyen. Before getting started, anticipate
18
which products might work best for your needs. While patches are a great choice for many people who like to “set it and forget it,” those who prefer to keep their mouth busy might prefer using a product like Walgreens Nicotine Gum. Available in 2 mg or 4 mg strengths, each piece lasts about 30 minutes and you can chew up to 20 pieces per day. Similarly, Walgreens Lozenges also come in 2 mg and 4 mg strengths and are a good choice for people who may avoid gum due to TMJ problems. • Build a plan: Quitting is highly personal. For a greater chance of success, look for resources that help you build a personalized plan. For example, the Walgreens team offers free live support and healthcare clinics in your area, as well as expert advice, treatment and tools available at walgreens.com. “If they can help my dad quit after 50plus years, they can definitely help you or a loved one,” says Nguyen.
For additional support and information, visit cancer.org or call the American Cancer Society, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-227-2345. When you quit smoking, you can lower your risk for a number of health problems including lung disease, lung cancer and heart disease. If you are attempting to go smoke-free, be sure you have all the support and tools you need. F

Low-Light, Low-Maintenance Houseplants by Melinda Myers don’t let a lack of brightly lit windows stop you from gardening indoors. Include some low maintenance, low light houseplants and maintenance strategies to boost your success. Low maintenance gardening starts with proper plant selection. Match the plant to the growing conditions and your gardening style.ZZ plant is a favorite low-light, low-maintenance plant. You will see it in hotels and shopping malls where light and care are often limited. Avoid overwatering that can lead to root rot and death of this plant. stripe down the middle. Brandi, another trailing philodendron, has olive green heart-shaped leaves with silver splashing. These can be allowed to trail or trained up onto a trellis. Golden Goddess has larger chartreuse leaves that make a dramatic statement in a home or office. When small, it is great for desks and tabletops, but you will need to transition it to a floor plant as it climbs its support, growing up to 6 feet tall. Or add a subtle touch of orange with Prince of Orange. The new leaves of this shrubby philodendron emerge a coppery orange and eventually age to green. It grows 24 or more inches tall. The name says it all. Cast iron plant is tough and tolerant of low light and benign neglect. Individual long strappy leaves sprout from the ground to create a mass of greenery. This growth habit has made it a popular groundcover in milder climates. Variegated varieties with splashed or striping can be difficult to find but add to its beauty. New varieties of Chinese evergreen have found their way into many garden centers. Their green leaves may have silver highlights like those of Calypso, Cecila and Golden Bay. Or add a bit of red to your indoor garden with the Red Gold and Ruby Ray Chinese evergreen. Low-light indoor plants allow you to add greenery where you once thought it was not possible. Their added beauty will help lift your spirits, reduce stress, and increase focus while improving your indoor air quality. ✦ Melinda Myers has written more than 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening. READY TO JOIN T HE SOLAR REVOLU T ION? OFF-GRID SOLAR If you didn’t know what time of the year it was, or what the weather was like, you could tell simply by eavesdropping at the philosophy counter of the Mule Barn coffee shop. Let’s give it a try. “Good to see you here, Doc,” said Herb Collins. “That warm water on the battery trick work for you?” “Thanks, Herb. Yep. I tried it this morning. What’s that you got there?” “Travel thingie. You know it’s more than 80 degrees in Guatemala … right now?” “Saw a deal on TV,” Dud said. “They’re water skiing in Florida. You can go fishing down there all year round.” “You going to Guatemala, Herb?” said Doc. “Maybe. Been thinking about it. I don’t know much Spanish, though.” “All you need to know,” said Dud, “is ‘Hace mucho calor,’ Herb.” “What’s that mean?” “Sure is hot!” “I was just thinking yesterday,” said Doc, “of the unsung beauty of sweat. You know, we take sweat for granted in summer. Heck, we even dislike it and go swimming to wash it off.” “That’s a fact,” Dud said. “But I think it would be kinda fun to sweat right now. You know, just sit in a hot sun and bask like an old lizard and sip iced tea…” “… and wear dark glasses,” said Herb. “… and watch girls in bikinis,” said Dud. They looked at him. “Around here?” “Well, no. I mean, Guatemala or Florida, you know.”
