T

he restaurant business is tough. Two-dollar-steak tough. So when a place closes, especially one that’s been a fixture on the scene, we sympathize, clucking our tongues at overhead, staffing and the economy at large. We watch dark windows for signs of life and cross our fingers for whoever moves in next, even ponying up for Kickstarter funds before tasting a single forkful. A collective hopefulness takes over because every time someone shoulders the risk of unloading tables and chairs into an empty space, it has the potential to be just what the neighborhood needs, our new go-to, our place. continued on page 10

l In Eureka, Fourth and Fifth streets saw quite a bit of turnover this past year, though the trades — Mexican for Mexican, pizza for pizza, Indian for Indian — have maintained balance in the little universe. The ovens at the defunct Big Louie’s weren’t cold for long; Marcelli’s Pizzaria (1604 Fourth St.) — yes, the same family that’s been rolling out ravioli seemingly since the earth’s crust cooled — is serving pizza by the slice and pie there now. A samosa’s throw away, you might not notice the Indian restaurant Tandoori Bites (1735 Fourth St.) is a new place until you see the renovated interior — it’s cooking up curries, tandoori chicken and naan bread where Pak Indian once stood.

Down the street, La Patria Solis (1718 Fourth St.) is making homemade tortillas and Mexican specialties in the former home of La Chaparrita. Likewise, Gonzalez Mexican Restaurant (1134 Fourth St.) picks up the burrito business with shrimp fajitas and other traditional favorites in the location where New Moon was eclipsed. l Over in Henderson Center, changes are a bit more dramatic. The short-lived Caribbean Picnic has given way to the lunch spot Nourish Bistro and Catering (518 Henderson St.), with its hearty soups and raspberry cream topped chocolate cupcakes. Window signs on F Street already have diners in the neighborhood speculating about the coming

attractions of classic American and steaks at Zoe Bistro and the Diver Bar and Grill’s brick pizza oven. Elsewhere in town, the spot where Church’s Chicken had its deep fryers is now the Humboldt Soup Company (1019 Myrtle Ave.), which is turning out more than soups — hefty salads, Mediterranean dishes, lemon bars and pastries — and still making use of the drive-thru. Speaking of drive-thru service, eyes have been rolling and popping at Bikini Brews (71 W Fourth St.), the former smoothie and florist hut that’s now got young women in swimwear frothing up cappuccinos for patrons who are probably just anti-Starbucks, right? l In Arcata, the quirky Richards’ Goat Tavern and Tea Room (401 I St.) serves comforting house specialties like individual strata and baked mac and cheese, as well as offerings from the Taco Faktory truck and Slice of Humboldt Pie. Fans of the latter are already tying on napkins for Bittersweet (828 I St.), its walk-in place with Local Cider Bar set to open this summer. And while the pain of losing Porter Street BBQ is still fresh, the opening of a Paul’s Live from New York (665 Samoa Boulevard) pizza place over the summer should help us bounce back with its skinny crust and fat meatballs. And if you heard that Luke’s Joint and The Other Place closed, don’t panic. Luke’s Joint has a new owner who’s keeping the menu steady, so you can still get that Dirty Bird sandwich. l Willow Creek is welcoming — what else? — the Bigfoot Restaurant (19 Willow Way), with enough steaks and burgers on the menu to feed a missing link. If the big guy has a hankering for fancy sliders and crepes, he’ll need to follow the shiny, red Hum Grown Grindz truck around town. l Down in Fortuna, right where the former Fernbridge Market stood, the much longer-named Fernbridge Market: Ridgetop Café and Coffee Barn (623 Fernbridge Drive) is now a rustic-cool place for hearty breakfasts and burgers with signature branded buns. And on the main drag, Real Food Grocer (939 Main St.) takes over Humboldt Healthy Food’s old spot with open-faced melts, baked treats and fritatas. Farther south, diners winding through the big trees in Phillipsville can stop for made-toorder burgers at the newly revived Chimney Tree Grill (1111 Avenue of the Giants). l We at the Journal will be loosening our belts and (ahem) investigating all these new eateries tirelessly, of course, so we can share the best dishes in the Hum Plate blog at www.northcoastjournal.com. Word on the Street On the hunt for street-style tacos

I

n typical behind-the-redwood-curtain style, Humboldt County has quietly accumulated places for delicious and pocketbook-friendly street tacos.

From Fortuna to Trinidad, our apps are peppered with red dots representing tacos trucks, taquerias and arguably the best gas station fare in the land. Whether you’re already deeply committed to hot, fresh tortillas stuffed with the holy trinity of meat, white onions and cilantro, or wondering what the fuss is about, here is a roadmap leading to your perfect Humboldt taco.

Now, for any foodie worth his or her hot sauce to recommend a good taco, quality is first

and foremost with creativity close on its heels and a nod to anti-corporate leanings. So while everyone appreciates a No. 6 platter on occasion, true street taco aficionados can’t be bothered with rice and beans and melted cheese on top. That said, size matters. Maybe it’s just for the coupon clippers among us, but a $5 taco lunch that leaves you pleasantly full, yet ready to get back to work while Tweeting about the “best taco in Humboldt” might be your biggest victory of the day. As we’ve established that quality, size and price are critical to successful taco hunting, going forward, we’ll refer to sizes as Small, Large and the JRT (just right taco), while value will be represented as the PTD (per taco damage).

FORTUNA Chatter on the wire about La Costa (664 S. Fortuna Blvd.) puts this brick and mortar restaurant squarely in the running for “best Mexican food in Humboldt” — no small claim. Devotees crow about the authenticity of slow-cooked, real-deal refried beans, thick-cut chips and the carne cabeza JRT on a homemade tortilla that comes in at $2.50 PTD. Also in the Friendly City is Taco Loco (955 Main St.) with its thick, homemade tortillas as the base for JRTs with grilled meat, onion and cilantro for a PTD of $2.89.

EUREKA Esmerelda’s, tucked away in Henderson Center at 328 Grotto St., is quietly serving some of Eureka’s most delectable tacos.

Size is consistently JRT, but the PTD varies depending on how many tacos you order, generally falling around $3. Key to Esmerelda’s deliciousness are the house-made tortillas, which you’ll sample in the rustic, warm chips served on arrival. The fresh corn flavor shines even more in the two corn tortillas wrapped around perfectly cooked carnitas, al pastor, carne asada, fish or chicken. If plenty of chips and Esmerelda’s smoky salsa are involved, two tacos will keep most happily satisfied, but if you’ve been out hiking all morning, throw in a third and, hey, they might cut you a deal.

Speedy Taco keeps the most consistent hours of any taco truck around and sometimes on a rainy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, that can mean the world. The friendly faces at Speedy’s, parked at 1223 Broadway beside Sport & Cycle in Eureka, crank out fresh JRT’s for a killer $1.65 each. At this price, quality is not spared, but if you’re feeling flush, upgrade to a Speedy Taco for $2.60 and they’ll top off a Large with lettuce, diced tomato, cheese and sauce. I recommend sitting with a pair of the tasty base models and ordering a whopping side of guacamole for $2 to go with those salty chips.

ARCATA Arcata is prime taco truck turf and competition is fierce. Undergrads depending on tacos for survival follow the migrational patterns of four local taco trucks like well-

seasoned hunters: Taco Faktory, La Barca, Pepe’s and La Chiquita. Relying on the hours reported online can be dicey, so for your best bet, seek out taco trucks midday Monday-Friday or call ahead. Taco Faktory, which of late parks at 10th and L streets, has cooked up a loyal following with its legendary Asian fusion tacos, filled with Korean barbecued pork or beef, playing that sweet/savory card so right. Traditionalists needn’t fear, as the truck supplies classic JRTs for an easy two buck PTD. La Barca, another strong contender for the “best taco in Humboldt,” keeps irregular truck hours off the plaza at Ninth and G streets, but more often than not, shows up late to feed the bar crowd. Another La Barca truck handles the lunch biz up at 1762 Myrtle Ave. in Eureka, and there’s a brick and mortar restaurant off Guintoli Avenue at 5201 Carlson Park Drive, as well. Great service, fresh tortillas and delicious tacos are keeping the people happy, though the PTD is a touch higher than the other trucks at around $2.50. Pepe’s, a relative newcomer to the Arcata taco truck scene, is dependably open behind Pacific Outfitters at 724 G St., replacing Alma’s in 2015. For a PTD of $3, the tacos are decidedly small, so if you’re after more than snack, follow HSU students’ lead and order a burrito.

TRINIDAD Don’t laugh. The eats from Aztec Grill are a thing. Housed in gas stations in Fortuna, Eureka, McKinleyville and Trinidad, the Aztec Grill is the last $1 taco outpost standing. Local surfers frequent the Trinidad location at 101 Main St. for incredibly tasty tacos that can be downed in two bites.

Hey, they’re a dollar. Following an epic surf sesh at Moonstone, climb back up from the beach, load up on three or four tacos. Burrito sampling comes highly recommended, as well. If you’re dining in, don’t mind the patrons stocking up on giant slushies and corn nuts around you, the gas station proprietors keep their facilities cleaner than, well, the average gas station dining room.
