Over the years, Humboldt County became renowned for growing some the world’s best cannabis. Innovation, technology, and science all came into play. Today, the name Humboldt is synonymous with cannabis.

for redwoods. More than half a century ago, young Americans moved out of the mainstream to find a different way of life among them. This back-to-the-land migration led many to the far reaches of Northern California, “behind the Redwood Curtain”. The counterculture was underway.

These young seekers found early on that Humboldt offered perfect weather for growing almost anything, including cannabis. Mom and Pop farms sprung up around the area and friends and neighbors enjoyed the benefits and lifestyle that growing cannabis provided.

Like any lucrative business, the cannabis industry has its nefarious characters and villains, those who seek to profit at any cost, degrading the environment and welfare of the place they live, while depleting natural resources. But the true counterculture spirit and the original back-to-the-land movement that supports best environmental and growth practices is alive and well.

One of the reasons the cannabis industry thrived in Humboldt was that it’s isolation and rugged rural terrain offered protection from discovery by law enforcement. Not that Humboldt growers escaped scrutiny, or their share of drug busts and infamy. They survived in spite of it.

The Green Gold Rush How Cannabis Came to Humboldt County

As the world-famous home of some of the best cannabis on the planet — as well as towering redwoods, scenic rivers and a stunning coastline — Humboldt County is a unique place.

To understand how cannabis became such a large part of Humboldt’s history, begin by looking back more than four decades at what was happening in America in the 1970s.

Much like today, the ’70s were a time of social and cultural upheaval as the “Great American Ride” was coming to an end and skepticism toward government was on the rise. The social and cultural movements that had flourished in the 1960s began to take on new forms, manifesting for many people in a desire to go “back to the land” and live simply and sustainably.

Riding high on the crest of this counterculture wave were the hippies of San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district. These pot-savvy pioneers heard land was cheap in Northern California, and they flocked to Humboldt County by the VW Bus-load to carve out homesteads on harvested tracts of former timber country.

of the logged land was considered worthless and sold for next to nothing. These areas had been cleared of trees, but they remained rough around the edges — no electricity, no plumbing and no clear access roads. The newcomers often had little to no income to put into their properties, but they had plenty of cannabis seeds that they planted far and wide.

In the early days, most of the seeds came from tightly-packed bricks of cannabis smuggled in from Mexico and Central America with now-famous names indicating their places of origin: Acapulco Gold, Maui Wowie, Oaxaca Highland Gold, Panama Red. In addition to the THC-laden flowers, these bricks often included leaves, stems and seeds. Prospective gardeners could simply remove the seeds, stick them in the ground and wait.

Sinsemilla Changes the Industry At least in the beginning, these plants weren’t necessarily sold for income, and they weren’t in the same league of potency and quality as the cannabis strains American consumers are familiar with today. But all that began to change as the booming underground industry fueled a metamorphosis that helped turn “marijuana” into the high-grade cannabis known as sinsemilla.

Sinsemilla — “without seeds” in Spanish — refers to the buds of female cannabis plants left unfertilized by removing male plants from the garden. The flowers of these plants are encrusted with cannabinoid resin glands — “trichomes” — evolved to capture pollen produced by males. When no pollen is present, females produce more flowers and create larger, more potent buds that fetch a much higher price.

Coincidentally, the production of this new, stronger cannabis was accompanied by a sharp decline in the quantity of cannabis imported from Mexico. The mid-1970s saw the U.S.-led spraying of paraquat, a toxic herbicide, on Mexico’s cannabis fields in order to destroy the industry and stop imports to the United States. These efforts were only partially successful as American consumers feared the health risks associated with paraquat and →

turned instead to safer, domestically grown products. Humboldt County, with its powerful sinsemilla, was well-positioned to fill the void.

Word spread quickly and soon the local industry was booming. By 1979, even the New York Times was clued in to Humboldt’s notoriety, publishing an article by William Carlsen that described the “astronomical price being paid for the local marijuana, which many connoisseurs consider among the most potent in the world.”

Growing A Community Around Cannabis Before long, it wasn’t just hippies who were cashing in on this new, lucrative industry.

Ranching and timber jobs had been declining in the area for years, and many former ranchers and loggers began experimenting with growing cannabis as an alternative way to provide for their families while remaining in the region they loved and called home. Self-identified hippies and rednecks alike were drawn by the possibility of making a good living working close to the land, and both groups continue to shape the diverse cultural milieu of Humboldt County today.

A lot has changed since 1979 — the War on Drugs and its countless casualties, raids on homes and farms and businesses, outdoor growers moving indoors, Propositions 215 and 64 — and while the social and political boundaries of cannabis have changed a lot over the last few decades, one thing has not: Humboldt County remains the cultural and spiritual center of the Emerald Triangle, the source of the highest quality cannabis in the world. Lots of people love animals but how many of them do laundry for a chicken?

Dr. Diane Dickinson of North Coast Medical could show them how it’s done. Her chicken, Lila, is the mascot of her Arcata-based practice, strutting across the logo through a garden of cannabis with a hen-sized medical pouch and a look of serenity.

“Lila is famous but she doesn’t know it. She’s 14 now and she sleeps in the house. She’ll wait at the back door until we let her in at night,” Dickinson said in a recent interview. “She sleeps on the cat tree, and I do chicken laundry. She’s very special and pretty hilarious.”

Sitting behind a small desk in her office, surrounded by whimsical sculptures and colorful paintings

created by friends and family members, Dickinson seems more like a talkative neighbor than a stereotypical doctor. Her manner is friendly and engaging, her voice warm and full of humor. Her office is tucked away in a cozy one-room unit behind North Coast Chiropractic, with just enough space inside for one patient at a time.

“The office is small, so I don’t have a lot of overhead and I can do things how I want to,” Dickinson said.

Because of the hectic pace and long hours required, Dickinson emphasized that she has great respect for the medical providers who choose to live and work in Humboldt County.

“I just want to acknowledge that I recognize how incredibly difficult primary care is and that we’re very fortunate to have community clinics like Open Door because they keep health care accessible and facilitate better funding to support providers,” she said.

Born in Massachusetts, Dickinson moved to Humboldt County in 1998, living first in Sacramento and Redding before growing tired of the heat. She took over North Coast Medical from Dr. Ken Miller when he retired in 2008. Prior to working with medical cannabis, she trained as a family practitioner and worked in private solo practice at several local clinics and as a hospitalist at Mad River Hospital.

Though she was resistant at first to recommending cannabis as medicine, she said the scientific evidence convinced her of its efficacy.

“It’s exciting and the research is changing all the time. There is a new study to read or a video to watch every day,” she said. “Many people are using it as harm reduction and have been able to minimize or recover from addictions to meth and tobacco and alcohol. … Dr. Dustin Sulak in Maine wrote up treatment guidelines — with reliable science behind them — to use cannabis to help people get off of opioids.”

Paradoxically, Dickinson said the mainstream medical community remains resistant to incorporating cannabis into the official pharmacopoeia despite mounting evidence for its effectiveness in treating a wide range of conditions.

“Doctors are still very closed-minded about cannabis, even in Humboldt County,” Dickinson said. “A few doctors think I’m wonderful but a lot of doctors think I’m crazy or a drug-pusher. … Many people don’t understand why this works and the science behind it, and they just think it’s smoke and mirrors because how can anything treat migraines and cancer and depression and psoriasis? But it works because we have [endocannabinoid] receptors all through our bodies.

“The endocannabinoid system is a breakthrough in science.

We all need to learn about this.”

“There are two well-studied receptors called CB₁ and CB₂, and although they were first found in the brain, they are virtually everywhere in our bodies. …

We’re just stuffed with these: They’re in our bones and bone marrow, all our organs, the lymphatic system, immune system, in our blood and skin,” Dickinson said. “This is the biggest receptor system in our bodies, and the last time I checked, there were only four medical schools doing a one-hour lecture on it. They are ignoring it because of the word ‘cannabinoid,’ and they have to get over this!”

“Climate and cannabis are intertwined,” explained Steve Dodge of Humboldt Growers Collective. “Look at the ideal climatic conditions for cannabis. It grows best between 60-90 degrees (Fahrenheit) and 40-60 percent humidity. … Now let us superimpose those conditions on a climate zone map of California. You will see that Southern Humboldt is a unique convergence of humidity and temperature that exists nowhere else.

“With the coast giving us cooler temperatures and moisture, and the inland areas giving us heat, it turns out that right here in Humboldt is one of the best cannabis growing areas anywhere,” Dodge said. “Cannabis is like any other plant: If you plant it in an advantageous place, it will fully express its genetic heritage. But if you put it in a stressed environment, it will adapt to that and it won’t show itself off as well.”

By carefully guiding the growth cycles of plants in order to promote some characteristics and suppress others, cannabis cultivators play an active role in creating the distinctive strains, flavors and potencies that give Humboldt County cannabis its global appeal.

Because terroir is a complex combination of nature and nurture, Dodge emphasized that the concept is very much “a floating target. …

You can be more or less purist about it, but Burgundy wines, for example, come only from the region of Burgundy (central France). … You can grow the same types of grapes in Napa but the result is not Burgundy. It tastes a little bit like it, but that’s not what it is. I think the same thing applies here. You can grow pot anywhere pretty easily, but not like we grow it here.”

While many small-scale growers are concerned they will be driven out of the market by industrial competitors, Dodge said leveraging the concept of terroir could be key to maintaining a competitive edge.

“I think the large industrial operations starting to light up down south are probably going to have a serious problem grasping and holding anything that resembles terroir,” Dodge said.

“Growing indoors is not going to fly if you’re trying to put a terroir label on your brand because you’re not interacting with anything unless you put it in there. … A city can’t really have terroir unless car fumes and chlorinated water are part of your terroir.

“Sometimes people ask me what’s going to happen to local growers when companies are producing tons and tons of cannabis, and my first response is to ask, ‘Do you like [boxed] wine?’ I think most people would say, ‘Well, not really.’ A lot of people might buy [boxed] wine and that’s fine ... but when you want to step up in quality you’re going to come to Humboldt and it’s going to be better, and you’re going to taste the difference.”

Fueled in part by readily available cannabis testing, awareness of the undesirable and often dangerous consequences of using toxic pesticides is driving innovation in Humboldt County, and these chemical crutches are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

Innovation In the Field: Enter the exciting new world of Integrated Pest Management. IPM is a holistic agricultural approach that relies on biodiversity and natural cycles rather than chemical controls. IPM allows cultivators to design and implement procedures that promote balanced biological communities and produce happy, healthy cannabis plants.

IPM is highly effective in that it greatly reduces, and often completely eliminates, the need for chemical pest controls that can be expensive, labor-intensive and tend to promote resistant pest populations. Many industry observers see IPM as the future of sustainable pest management, and Humboldt County farmers are leading the way by providing not only the best, but also the safest, most environmentally friendly cannabis.

How IPM Works Planning: IPM starts with detailed planning that takes many factors into account: geographical and environmental assessments, yield projections, acceptable practices, quality standards and much more. Detailed plans allow growers to become proactive rather than reactive when dealing with pests. This proactive approach is essential to using IPM successfully. In Humboldt, this type of structured plan has become more and more common, thanks in large part to heightened awareness of these techniques and the resultant pool of local expertise that has developed.

Humboldt County farmers interested in IPM now have a wealth of workshops, educational opportunites and consulting resources to choose from. Local cultivators and farm and garden stores are forging the future of high-quality cannabis together — all made with Humboldt heart, soul and sensibility.

is tweaked and fine-tuned for each site, and it becomes central to the daily, seasonal and annual workings of a farm. The most crucial aspect of successful implementation is monitoring.

Monitoring plans must consider many factors, including knowledge of pests known to target cannabis, awareness of species that may have presented problems historically on a specific property or in the region, understanding of natural cycles, and labor constraints (since it’s not usually possible to turn over every leaf).

The result will be a highly structured schedule that accounts for a wide range of factors and conditions vital to the cultivation of fine cannabis. Diligence is the main ingredient in a successful monitoring effort, and the most diligent cultivators of cannabis have always grown the best products — just ask any experienced Humboldt County farmer.

Balanced Responses to Infestation: When the inevitable infestation occurs — and it is inevitable — practitioners of IPM can make use of several approaches to promote a more balanced biological community. The goal is to stunt the proliferation of detrimental species rather than seeking to eradicate them entirely. IPM is based on keeping environmental conditions in balance and allowing for acceptable levels of pests. Since nobody does balance better than Mother Nature, IPM practitioners look first to her for solutions and guidance — Mother Nature doesn’t seek to eradicate one species in favor of another, so the IPM practitioner follows her lead.

The farmer using IPM responds to infestations with a range of natural tools — from beneficial insects and bacteria to increasing greenhouse ventilation and amending watering and feeding schedules. These balanced responses to pest issues are customized to individual environments and infestations rather than relying on “one-sizefits-all” chemical eradication techniques, which typically leave little room for consideration of environmental soundness or the health implications of pesticide residues in finished products.

IPM techniques sometimes require a bit more time spent planning and monitoring, but the payoff comes in the form of the very finest cannabis — produced with the safety of the consumer and the integrity of the environment as top priorities, and worthy of carrying the seal of legendary Humboldt quality.

Now You’re Cooking with Grass

One of the many pleasures of cannabis is that there are so many different ways to consume it. For those who prefer an alternative to smoking, cooking with cannabis has long been a preferred option, especially when it’s desirable to extend and enhance the effects (at the cost of slightly delayed onset).

I pulled an old cookbook out of storage recently: Cooking with Marijuana by (wait for it) Evelyn Schmevelyn, printed in 1974 by Sun Magic Publishing. I remember preparing one of Chapter 9’s recipes, aptly named “Jill’s Knock Yourself Out First Thing in the Morning Breakfast Sammiches” — basically a cheesy egg and bacon sandwich. It was popular fare on weekends in the ’70s, probably because it called for a ½ cup of pot (thoroughly cleaned, sieved, run through the blender and sautéed in a little butter) to make 4 servings. If you’re wondering, yes, it was a little gritty.

Most of Schmevelyn’s recipes could stand an update — such as using organic cheese rather than Velveeta on Jill’s Sammiches — and, due to today’s higher-quality cannabis, much less

product is necessary to reach the same levels of elevation.

What if I wanted to add cannabis to a favorite brunch recipe I turn to regularly on the weekends? With a little research, I determined that the easiest recipes to adapt are those that already call for butter or oil. Rather than making my own cannabutter, I elected to buy a 4-ounce tub at a local dispensary. Packing 2,300 milligrams of THC, a single container equals 230 servings of 10 milligrams each. As always, before consuming cannabis, know your THC dosage preferences and limitations.

Fortunately, makers of modern cannabutter have solved the grit problem. This recipe calls for a total of 3 ½ tablespoons of softened butter. Depending on the desired dosage per person, plan to substitute ½ - 1 tablespoon of regular butter with cannabutter. (I used ½ tablespoon of cannabutter for the first test run and my taste testers thought it was too mild. Know your audience.) Think of this recipe as a savory bread pudding suitable for any meal.

Cooking with Marijuana actually explains how to do this the old-fashioned way, using an album cover and matchbook. The book is charmingly illustrated with hippy, trippy drawings, and even though it’s long been out of print, it’s not difficult to find a used copy online — but you won’t be able to buy it at the original price of $2.95.

METHOD

Butter pan lightly. Spread remaining butter on one side of each slice of bread and place a layer in the pan, buttered-side up. Sprinkle with the grated cheese.

Cover with remaining bread.

Whisk together the remaining ingredients and pour over bread and cheese. Push the top layer of bread down into the egg mixture to make sure slices are coated.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least six hours.

Heat oven to 350˚ F. Remove plastic wrap and place in the upper third of the oven. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until puffy and lightly browned. Let stand five minutes before serving. Serves 6.
