Pull on a hoodie — per Humboldt’s unofficial dress code — and take a trip along our newly christened stretch of the Humboldt Bay Trail between Eureka and Arcata. We’ve got pro tips for planning your day of adventure and what sights to look out for. Our Perfect Trips include more hiking and strolling options from the top of Trinidad to the bottoms of its tidepools. A trip into the tops of our redwood trees or across historic covered bridges are on offer, too. We’ve also got places to view indoor beauty in painting, sculpture and ceramics, or to make your own. And we’d never leave you without sustenance, whether you’re craving ramen, Reubens or red velvet cupcakes. We’ve got good times on tap for the beer crowd at Six Rivers Brewery, complete with sunsets and seasonal craft brews. All Along the Humboldt Bay Trail From Arcata to Eureka … and Back Story and photos by Mark Larson

EVERYONE — WHETHER WALKING, ROLLING, RUNNING OR RIDING — should check out the newly completed Humboldt Bay Trail segment between Eureka and Arcata. The paved, ADAaccessible, multi-use trail allows all types and skill levels of recreational non-motorized trail users to enjoy the flat, sea-level stretch with great views of Humboldt Bay, easy access and parking points. The 6.5-mile trail between Arcata and Eureka is a dramatic improvement in safety and experience from the previous option next to traffic in the U.S. Highway 101 corridor. Given trail access points (see below), there’s no longer any need to get on the highway, and the trail has only one stop sign

for cross traffic entering Bracut Industrial Park. In just a few months, it’s already become popular with bicyclists, walkers, runners, roller skaters, rollerbladers, skateboarders and users of e-powered wheelchairs. Most of its layout runs along the Humboldt Bay shoreline between the old out of service railroad tracks and the highway, except for a 1-mile stretch on top of the Brainard levee that loops around shuttered Green Diamond lumber mill buildings. While there you can enjoy the views of the bay away from traffic noise next to four benches and interpretive signs. Those looking for a longer ride can take advantage of the Humboldt Bay Trail for approximately CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 →

14 miles between Eureka’s Humboldt Hill and the trail’s end at Larson Park in Arcata. From there, easy road connections lead you to the Hammond Trail bridge trailhead in the Arcata Bottoms and onward through McKinleyville until you reach scenic Clam Beach. To the south from the Humboldt Bay Trail connection at the Eureka Slough railroad bridge in Eureka, a continuous trail runs south along Humboldt Bay on the Waterfront Trail and the Hikshari’ Trail segments past the Herrick Avenue Park and Ride lot and ends near the bottom of Humboldt Hill.

Mileage It’s roughly 6.5 miles one way from the Eureka Waterfront Trail connection at Eureka Slough railroad bridge near Target to the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary area (no vehicle parking available in between).

Highlights • Excellent conditions on the well-constructed, well-marked, paved trail. • Benches, interpretative signs about the history and ecosystem of the area, views of Humboldt Bay and little road noise on the 1-mile Brainard levee portion with its backdoor views of the Green Diamond (formerly California Redwood Co.) mill site. • Access to the Arcata Marsh trails and Wildlife Interpretive Center or Eureka Waterfront Trail.

Keep in mind: • Currently no parking access next to the trail anywhere between Eureka and Arcata – do not park at Bracut Industrial Park. • No potable water or toilet access on the trail between Target in Eureka and the outdoor toilet at the Arcata Marsh parking lot at the foot of I Street (or the restroom at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center at 569 South G St. when it’s open). There is a public restroom along the Waterfront Trail not far to the west of Target under the Samoa Bridge.

Option 1: After parking near the Target store (coffee and restrooms inside), access the Humboldt Bay Trail South via the newly painted Kaleidoscope Crossing Bridge, which is a refurbished railroad bridge over the Eureka Slough. Option 2: Park at the Adorni Center/Halvorsen Park lot (1201 Waterfront Drive) and head north along the Waterfront Trail past the public restrooms under the Samoa Bridge to the Humboldt Bay Trail South to Arcata.

Starting in Arcata Option 1: Turn south from Samoa Boulevard onto South G Street and park in the large parking lot for Arcata Marsh trails and the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center at 569 South G St. (restrooms during operating hours, Mondays 1 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and onward to the nearby Humboldt Bay Trail. Option 2: Turn south from Samoa Boulevard onto South I Street and drive to the dead end and the large parking area (portable toilet located here) and follow the marsh trails to the nearby Humboldt Bay Trail to Eureka. The Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center has a free trail map and brochure in English and Spanish, a bookstore, bird checklists, interactive exhibits, a wildflower garden and a log of recent bird sightings. A beach wheelchair is available for checkout upon request. The center is closed on major holidays. For more information, call (707) 826-2359.

Redwood Transit System back to your vehicle. The buses are equipped with bike racks. Starting in Arcata, park near the Arcata bus stop at Fifth and G streets, and walk/ride/roll on South G Street to the Humboldt Bay Trail. Once in Eureka, you can catch a northbound bus to Arcata on Fifth Street at U, O, K, H or D streets. Starting in Eureka, park near a bus stop on Fourth Street at B, H, L or O streets. Once you’ve completed the trail to Arcata, take the bus at H and Sixth streets back to Eureka. You can upload a Redwood Transit System bus schedule at hta.org.

Preparation and safety Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat or helmet, and dress in layers (it can be cold and windy at times next to the bay). Pack a charged cell phone and first aid in case of blisters. If you’re doing the trail by yourself, let someone know your plans and expected return time. If you’re rolling on the trail, stay to the right and then slow down as you pass others on their left side. If walking, always stay to the right and stay alert for anyone passing you on the left.

Perfect Trips for Fall and Winter By Meg Wall-Wild

You’ve been cooped up all week. The kids are bouncing off the walls. The whole family is in need of escape and some great nosh. Once again, Humboldt comes to the rescue! The whole family can blow off steam in a free-spirited game of laser tag. Win or lose, it matters not, as long as all have fun! A high walk among the tall trees can lift your spirits because losing to a 10 year old stings a bit. Spotting stars here doesn’t just mean seeing Leonardo di Caprio, but the multi-armed denizens of a rocky tidal pool. Make a video for grandma of your toddler meeting the coolest bird on the playground — a massive egret — and losing their little mind. On the way home, chase those seasonal chills away with a steaming bowl of ramen. Wrap yourself up in what makes Humboldt, well, Humboldt.

Outdoorsy Types The splendor of nature is within your reach. All you have to do is open your front door. Reconnect with the ocean by traveling a path recently reconnected to the ocean! The College Cove Trail (585 Stagecoach Road, Trinidad; (707) 677-3570) to the beach of the same name is now repaired. College Cove’s beach is also accessible by Trinidad State Beach, but only at low tide. And low tide is key for the longest enjoyment of the sands before high tide chases everyone back up the hill. Listen to the surf as you watch seabirds circling Pewetole Island. You may be too relaxed to bother with bird identification, but the pelagic cormorants do not mind. If there has been rain (and there will be) look for College Cove Waterfall to be charged up and waiting for its photo op. Feeling more energetic? Explore the many tidal pools looking for starfish. Patrick may live in Bikini Bottom but some of his kin Piaster brevispinus (giant pink sea star) hang out in Humboldt. Once you are star-struck, become a citizen scientist by joining the California Academy of Sciences (calacademy.org) annual Solstice Sea Star Search. This survey of starfish is held during December, one of the two times each year when the low tide is at its lowest. Survey your favorite tidal pool now and return to see what goes on in June during the summer solstice low tide. Look for Piaster ochraceus (ochre sea star) at the beaches nestled from College Cove to Moonstone Beach, or your local coastal area, because places like the Lost Coast have tidal pools of their own. You are a ginormous visitor to the world of delicate creatures that easily go squish. Please get your hands wet first if you touch a dweller of the seas to stop dry human fingers from rubbing off their protective slimy (in a good way) coating. Those rocks are unforgiving so walk carefully — wear shoes

that keep you safe while on slippery sharp wet rocks. Remember, don’t turn your back on the ocean because sneaker waves really are sneaky. After the incoming tide makes beach and pool exploration dicey, the almost 200-foot-high Tsurewa (925 Lighthouse Road, Trinidad) — Trinidad Head’s ancient Indigenous name — will be high and dry. The 1.4-mile Tsurai Trail circles the sea stack giving you stunning views of the harbor (owned and operated by the Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria) and the magnificent Pacific Ocean. A sweeping view of traditional Yurok territory and site of the ancient village of Tsurai gives you time to reflect on the many layers of deep meaning this landscape has for the Tsurai people. The richness of Humboldt provides for nature, too, and birds reign supreme on the many rocky outcrops jutting up from the sea. California has 1,100 miles of coast festooned with small islands and rocks like Tsurewa that are now protected as part of the California National Monument. Trinidad kicks it up a notch with its designation of a Monument Gateway. This means your feet can stay dry on shore as you discover the magic of offshore rocks. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 →

Foodies There are days your hunger can only be satisfied by something warm and noodle-y. Beat a path to Susukino Ramen Bar (1504 G St., Arcata; (707) 6303560; susukinramen.com) for a comforting bowl of noodles in tasty broth. Shoyu (soya based) soothes with tender pieces of pork and golden ajitama egg (marinated in the best way). San (vinegar based) is made for hot and sour lovers, with a tangy kiss and

kick if you add extra ginger. Tan tan (spicy sesame and peanut based) brings the chili, while the miso-based soup tempts you with tofu and seaweed. The ordering kiosk gives you choice of full or half order, meat or veggie, add ins and (importantly) heat, so you do not exceed your own personal Scofield limit. Balance out the spice with a side of edamame or pickled cucumber salad washed down with a cold ginger-key lime soda. Savor your ramen under a map of Hokkaido and see if you can locate Susukino (Hint: The entertainment district is in Chūō-ku, Sapporo). Order ahead for pickup if you have no time to contemplate geography. It is 2 a.m. and you are so empty you echo, but you know where to go. Since 1984 the Chum family has served college students and long-timers around the clock (except Mondays because even the pizza makers need a day off) at the venerable Don’s Donuts, Pizza & Deli (933 H St., Arcata; (707) 822-6465). The little restaurant does a brisk trade by satisfying the cravings of its patrons on three levels: doughnuts, pizza and sandwiches. Whether by the slice or a whole pie, pepperoni or browned-just-right cheese (and everything in between), the first hot bite lets you know you made the right choice. Unless the right choice for you is a chicken banh mi sandwich with pickled carrots and daikon with the perfect combo of crunch and airy baguette. Whether you go for pizza or a sandwich, the finishing touch awaits behind a glass case. Frosted French twists and apple fritters beckon. Here’s hoping you have enough room in your backpack to keep them from reaching critical squish point on your bike ride home.

Art Lovers Humboldt’s art scene entices you to collect or create with equal enthusiasm. You can easily become a patron of the arts at Old Town Art Gallery (417 Second St. Suite 102, Eureka; (707) 445-2315). This feast for the eyes is Humboldt’s oldest cooperative gallery, having celebrated 50 years since its doors first opened in 1974. Fifteen talented artists present works in all media: ceramics, jewelry, metalwork, painting, photography and woodworking. The rich wood burls worked by artist Mike Pixley contrast with stunning photos of the beautiful coastal area where we get to live. The wide range means that there is something for everyone. Did you see those ultra-cool multicolored paintings by Reilan Sandoval or the fluid acrylics by Yuliya Kinnunen? Don’t miss the whimsical animal-inspired ceramics of Larissa Stevenson. Rain or shine, there is something fun to do in Humboldt for the younger set. If the siblings are bouncing off the walls, head to Game On Laser Tag and More (411 First St., Eureka; (707) 7981077). A fast-paced game of laser tag will work off their pent-up energy while you enjoy a local brew. Or challenge them to a game of black light mini golf. Treat them to a round of Gatorades after you “miss” that crucial putt to let them win. The mini golf rooms are changed up to keep your budding Scottie Scheffler sharp. Game On has a dedicated party room with birthday packages designed to keep the most rambunctious 12 year olds happy. Keep your eyes on Game On’s social media for seasonal events and videos of everyone having a literal blast. Your little one will delight at the sight of the big egret playground at Da’ Yas Park (2605 Pine St., Eureka, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.). The redesign of the former 20/30 Park warranted its new name. Da’ Yas means “where the cypress are” in Soulatluk, the language of the Wiyot Tribe which was consulted for names as the park is situated on their traditional tribal lands. The community was consulted to make sure the park is inclusive and accessible. The restrooms sport colorful public art designed by local muralist Mir De Silva, who led the community in a paint-by-numbers event, a source of pride for participants. The 4-acre park packs a wallop, with courts, walkways, fitness equipment and grass playing fields. That cool egret is the centerpiece in a watershed-themed playground created by Melton Design, which made sure the playground is ADA accessible because everyone deserves childhood joy. Mia bella means my beautiful, so Mia Bella Cupcakes (1041 H St., Arcata; (707) 630-5059) is the perfect name for a bakery offering some absolutely stunning treats. Strawberry lemonade, peanut butter cookie, and berry champagne cupcakes entice you from behind glass. You are here for the kids, but the strawberry matcha is calling your name. Gluten-free and vegan options are just as tasty and stunning and everything is almost too pretty to eat. Almost. Follow Mia Bella on social media to catch when orange mimosa, Nutella French toast or moon pie cupcakes make their crowd-pleasing appearances. Have you been to the Redwood Sky Walk at Sequoia Park Zoo (3414 W St., Eureka; (707) 441-4263)? What are you waiting for? The almost ¼-mile-long redwood structure rises to reach an eventual height of 100 feet. Its gentle ascent ramp, platforms and bridges are designed to accommodate wheelchairs (but no strollers, please). The park has two wheelchairs available, and a stroller parking lot for your convenience. Learn along the way with interpretive panels that tell you who hangs out in these massive trees, like the copepods (shrimp-like creatures) who live in the redwood canopy. There are benches to sit and reflect upon the lifespan of such giants, and more interpretive panels because the redwoods are absolutely fascinating. The flexible foot bridges (they sway!) in the more challenging Adventure Segments may give you a sense of apprehension as they sway with every step, but you will persevere distracted by spectacular beauty. The sky walk also gives you a birds-eye view of the zoo’s celebrity bears (but not their wild ursine cousins who visit after closing, as one did to viral fame), and the public trails in Sequoia Park (outside of the zoo enclosure) with herds of wandering Homo sapiens. the holiday season. The Redwood Sky Walk is included in Sequoia Park Zoo’s admission so why not enjoy the river otter tank’s crawl-through tube as well? Imagine being eye to eye with the clowns of the water. The cheerful cafe and enticing gift store can feed your body and mind, and Humboldt County residents, military, recipients of EBT, BIC and WIC, seniors, and children 3-12 (2 and under free) are all eligible for admissions discounts. After communing with the canopy, learn more about life on the ground at the Trinidad Museum (400 Janis Court, Trinidad; (707) 677-3883). The Native American Room exhibits “Luffenholtz Fish Camp - 1950,” black and white photographs taken by Barbara and the late Chuck Snells, documenting Yurok tribal members Mamie Parton, Alice Spot, Minnie Shafer and their families as they traditionally caught and dried surf fish. The exhibit includes artifacts from the museum’s permanent collections, including an Iris fiber fishing net and an eel hook by James Gensaw. The Native Plant Garden has new handcrafted plant ID signs with handy QR codes so you know what plants to get for your own patch. Enjoy a garden so cool it got a shout out in the California Native Plant Society’s magazine Flora (Fall 2025). The museum is open Thursday to Sunday, but the garden is strollable all week long. Madison ain’t the only county with historic covered bridges (Madison only beats us 5-3). Whether you have a thing for an old-fashioned tearjerker or just love water-spanning architecture, there are three ways to get your covered bridge on. Two out of three are located in the unincorporated community of Rosewood, just south of Eureka. You can find the Berta’s Ranch Covered Bridge about 2.5 miles from U.S. Highway

101. Take the Herrick Avenue exit and turn right on Elk River Road. Follow it south until the right turn onto Bertas Road and the one lane bridge. (Caution: They are all one lane bridges.) Built by the Works Progress Administration in 1936, this is the oldest covered bridge in Humboldt and considered the most westerly in the U.S. After rumbling over Berta’s beams, head south on Elk River Road for just under a mile. Turn right onto Zanes Road, where you will discover the second-oldest covered bridge in Humboldt. This is the Zane’s Ranch Covered Bridge, built by the WPA in 1937. To make the covered bridge trifecta, head north to Bayside. The Brookwood Covered Bridge, built in 1969, is about 2.5 miles from the U.S. Highway 101/ Bayside Cutoff exit. Follow Jacoby Creek Road to Brookwood Drive. Wow your passengers with your knowledge of trusses (Berta’s and Zane’s are Queen type; Brookwood’s are Howe type). H

WALKING THROUGH THE DOORS OF GALLAGHER’S for the first time since the move back to its original location in the Historic Eagle House at C and Second streets feels much like greeting an old friend. What we’ve come to know and love about Gallagher’s remains largely the same (properly poured pints, hearty meals, an inviting gathering space). But this latest iteration brings a few changes, too, drawing us closer to the heart and soul of Old Town’s favorite Irish pub. CONTINUED ON PAGE 28 →

Many locals watched with some dismay, as Gallagher’s shuttered its doors in 2021, packing into a far less impressive building off Fourth Street in Eureka. While the food and the staff remained steadfast as ever, the Fourth Street location lacked the old-timey ambiance of the stunning Eagle House, built in 1888. Still, Gallagher stayed the course. Then in fall of 2023, the business went up for sale, and Mark Hill, a fifth-generation Hydesville rancher with a background in tech and an entrepreneurial spirit, purchased the restaurant. When the space at the Eagle House appeared on the market, Hill felt “it was meant to be,” and Gallagher’s set a course for home. Locals rejoiced. The space at the Eagle House has undergone renovations, both to the front and back of house. A new kitchen layout better suits peak business hours (Gallagher’s can do more than 100 orders of fish and chips on a busy night), and an updated dining space breathes new life into the restaurant, while staying true to the cozy, intimate feel of a traditional Irish pub. Kelly green walls and black accents make the ceiling-high oak bar the star of the show. Cozy leather booth seating and overstuffed armchairs offer a place to commune with loved ones, or share the latest village gossip over a pint. The fare favorites that earned Gallagher’s its reputation remain on the menu. Hill’s goal was not to undo what locals have come to appreciate

about Gallagher’s over the years, but to lean into them. What’s so appealing about classic Irish recipes are the simple ingredients and tried-andtrue forms and flavors. There’s a time and place for the pea foam and teeny portions of molecular gastronomy, but an Irish pub is not one of them. We want tradition, we want locally sourced ingredients, and we want a generous helping of both. Luckily for us, Gallagher’s offers an array of Irish-focused specialties and other hearty pub entrees that play to these desires. Enter the shepherd’s pie. A mix of beef and lamb, root vegetables, Guinness (of course) and a hint of fennel fill the base of the pie. Topped with fluffy mashed potato peaks that are roasted until slightly crusty and served baked piping hot, this is a dish you might have found on your Mamo’s kitchen table. Gallagher’s award-winning fish and chips are a perennial staple. Locally-caught cod and halibut are beer battered, deep fried and plated atop a heaping mound of crispy well-seasoned chips (that’s French Fries for us Americans). While the concept is simple, it’s incredibly hard to execute well. The fish and the chips remain crispy well after you’ve tucked into the first fillet, and the fish is moist and tender despite having weathered the high temperatures of a deep fryer. Malt vinegar or lemon are offered as ritual, but you may not need them — the batter is flavorful enough on its own. According to Hill, other local favorites include the Reuben egg rolls, Irish bangers

(sourced from Taylor’s Sausages) and classic corned beef and cabbage (served all year round — not just on St. Paddy’s Day). Be sure to save room for dessert, as the Irish bread pudding is delightful. “Dense” is not a bad word here — thick, eggy cinnamon roll-esque brioche is studded with sweet raisins, soaked in milk and topped with warm, house-made whiskey-caramel sauce. All of Gallagher’s staples are elevated by new head chef, Jeff Dunker, who has led the culinary side of things at notable Arcata eateries Campground and Salt, and we expect to see new specials on the menu soon. One of a handful of establishments that serves Guinness on tap (and in the appropriately sized 20-ounce pint glasses), Gallagher’s takes the “pub” part of its name very seriously. In addition to an assortment of local beers on tap, the bar also pours Harp lager and Smithwick’s Red Ale, both Irish brewed and barreled beers you would find at any watering hole in the old country worth its salt. From the towering historic bar come craft cocktails with an Irish twist. The Irish Plumber is a refreshing mix of Jameson, St. Germaine and pineapple juice. The Humboldt Espresso Martini is a cool, modern take on an Irish Coffee, with coffee liquor, vanilla vodka and cold brew from Humboldt Bay Coffee Co. swirled into a chilled and chocolate-drizzled coup glass. Like pubs all over the world (and especially Ireland), Gallagher’s embraces its role as a community hub. Patrons are joined by Dana Conners, who plays Irish tunes on the fiddle and banjo on Thursday evenings. On Sundays from 5-7 p.m., in true Irish fashion, the back dining room becomes a casual “session” space where local musicians drop in to play traditional Irish songs together. The Guinness tastes even better when you have something to tap your toes to. Naturally, St. Patrick’s Day at Gallagher’s brings together food, music and merriment

in the ballroom of the Eagle House Inn. The annual multiday-event will feature a number of live Irish bands, and a special food and drink menu for the celebration. Sweet Treats and Times at Patches’ Pastries IN FORTUNA

WASHED WITH GOLDEN LIGHT and set against the backdrop of the quaint, historic downtown, fall feels a little more tangible in Fortuna. Apples are being harvested by the bushel, pumpkins peer out from decorated storefronts and something special is brewing on the corner of 10th and Main Streets. Open the doors of Patches’ Pastries to find you may have stepped back in time. Colorful stained-glass windows splash the walls with color, and brocade Victorian settees recall a bygone era, when calling on someone to share a cup of tea and the latest gossip was a regular activity. The espresso bar clinks and

clatters quietly as steaming mugs are passed across the counter. Friends recount their summer adventures over emptying cups of coffee and crumb-sprinkled plates. From the kitchen wafts a spell of browning sugar and melting butter, drawing patrons in for a closer look at the enchanting array of pastries, cookies, pies and cakes. These treats, however, did not appear by some supernatural force: They are the culmination of many years of hard work, a dash of trial and tribulation, and, of course, lots of love. began in Humboldt. A student of the Arcata High School culinary program, he was bakery-bound from an early age. After leaving the nest and graduating from the Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland, he returned to Humboldt County to set up a one-man operation at Northtown Coffee, offering just four kinds of pastries. These were enough to stir up interest in the community, and Fraga expanded operations to a commissary kitchen at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds before finally opening a dedicated storefront in Ferndale. However, Fraga’s vision hadn’t quite been fulfilled. He was still seeking a space that he could truly share with the community, and with its ample but cozy dining room area, the Fortuna location offered just that. The newest iteration of Patches’ Pastries opened its doors in April of 2025 and has already garnered quite the following. Rightfully so. Alongside a rotating assortment of cookies, scones, cake, loaves, cheesecake slices, Danishes and cookies available every day, one can also order whole cakes, cupcakes and cookies by the dozen, seasonal tarts and pies, chocolate-covered

strawberries, tiramisu, quiches and more. Perennial favorites are the snickerdoodle cheesecake (topped with freshly baked snickerdoodle cookie crumbles, of course), and the brown butter and sea salt chocolate chip cookies, which are both available year-round. For fall, the menu nods to one of Fortuna’s favorite harvests, with apple Danishes and caramel apples populating the glass case. Brownies and seasonal macarons are sure to delight both the young and young at heart with favorite autumnal flavors like pumpkin spice. Fraga is excited to introduce savory Danishes with hearty fillings like goat cheese, prosciutto and caramelized onions, complementing a growing menu of hot items like breakfast sandwiches and biscuits and gravy. Mimosas have also made an appearance on the menu, if your morning needs a little extra sparkle. Gluten-free and vegan patrons, do not dismay: There are typically a number of treats in which you can indulge. For many, the cooler seasons are a time to reconnect with loved ones, an invitation to slow down, take stock and enjoy the fruits of our labor. While pas-

tries may be the apple of Fraga’s eye, they’re not the only thing he cares deeply about. As an openly trans business owner, he has also prioritized creating a safe and fun environment for queer employees, and hopes his Fortuna location will become a space for community members to gather and celebrate. Patches’ Pastries also showcases other locally made goods, with ice cream from Ferndale’s Foggy Bottoms Boys available by the scoop, and

a gift section with canned goods and arts and crafts alongside the front counter. As we settle into colder mornings and shorter days, we seek ways to experience warmth and connection, and, of course, to have a little fun. So, grab your favorite book, your favorite person, a cup of coffee and a sweet treat (perhaps a maple cinnamon roll?), and savor a little slice of magic at Patches’. H

Dokkaebier, and recently to Six Rivers Brewery. As Weshnak and I talked, we nerded out a little on beermaking stuff. He explained the mix of adjunct grains and hops that provide the molecular magic to make the haze in a hazy IPA. We talked about achieving consistency and Aaron said that “a good brewer can make the same beer over and over; a great brewer can do that regardless of changing conditions.” Despite the geekery, he said, in the end what is most important is that people “come in and enjoy it.” Like others who work in a brewhouse, he described it as “blood, sweat and tears, and then more sweat.” When we spoke, construction was still hindering brewhouse operations and the number of beers on tap was somewhat limited. That didn’t keep me from enjoying a nice flight of brews, starting with the Los Mexican Lager (named for long-time former head brewer Carlos “Los” Sanchez). It’s an honest and very drinkable end-of-the-day, pair-it-with-a-burger kind of beer. Next up was the Macadamia Nut Porter. It’s smooth, with a noticeable nuttiness and that beautiful, creamy porter head. Then came the Lady’s Hazy IPA, named for the outfit’s rescued brew dog. It hit the requisite New England

notes, fruity with a soft mouthfeel. The raspberry lambic is a go-to order for me when I’m on site because it’s not something you find everywhere. Each seven-barrel batch includes Belgian dark candy syrup and 400 pounds of raspberries, giving it a lovely red color. Last up was the Bluff Creek Pale Ale. This classic American pale ale is one of my likely answers to the question, “If you had to pick one, which local beer would you take for a year living on a desert island?” It’s got a bright up-front hoppiness — not too much — and invites you to drink another. Weshnak has tinkered with the Bluff Creek Pale Ale recipe. He is planning a refresh of the wheat beer on offer, likely moving to more of a wit style. He also spoke a little mysteriously about a new IPA, one that he hopes will be a West Coast meets Midwest approach. The food menu provides a happy mix of pub food plus. There are poppers and upscale fries to pair with your beers and cocktails. Weshnak, who calls himself a chicken wing afficionado, says theirs are the best in town. Local grassfed beef features prominently in the burger selections and locally caught fish offer seasonal options for halibut and chips, rock fish tacos and

the tuna melt. The stone baked Fig & Pig pizza is bacon-y with some heat. Or you can choose from several classic salads. Aside from providing food and drinks, Six Rivers Brewery serves as a model in creating community, which is a Humboldt County theme. It collaborates extensively with other Humboldt businesses, featuring local distillery products on the cocktail menu and inviting food trucks to pull into the parking lot. In the charming town of Trinidad, Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the replica 1949 Memorial Lighthouse honoring those lost or buried at sea, and take in the view and the sea air. You can tour the 1871 Trinidad Head Lighthouse (a working navigational aid) from 10 AM. to noon on the first Saturday of every month. In summer, the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over.

Willow Creek ← Head east to Willow Creek for "river fun in the mountain sun." Cool off at Camp Kimtu Beach, raft, kayak or find a quiet spot along the Trinity River and fish. Located in the Six Rivers National Forest, the area's natural beauty beckons campers, hikers and bird watchers, alike. Drive scenic State Route 96 through Bigfoot Country, the region with the the most Sasquatch sightings in the nation. Swing into the China Flat Museum to explore the lore and take a selfie with Bigfoot's 25foot redwood likeness.

The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach. Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under the ancient, towering canopy to really get it. Take it slow and plan to make a few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction. South is Garberville, where you can hit the farmers market for an afternoon treat and maybe catch a show. The nearby Mateel Community Center regularly brings in major musical acts and puts on some of Humboldt’s biggest festivals.
