President’s Message
T
his year’s rodeo theme is “Honor The Badge” and was chosen as a way to say “thank you” to our local law enforcement men and women for their service to the community. We want to focus on the positive contributions of law enforcers, for without their dedication to uphold the law, our everyday lives would be much different. Every officer puts his or her life on the line every day to keep us safe and sound. They deserve more than a pat on the back for their commitment to serve and we can’t think of a better way than to have them lead the 2015 Fortuna Rodeo Parade as our grand marshals. The board of directors has been working diligently to make this year’s event bigger and better than ever. We have several new and exciting additions: Friday’s Motorsports Night will feature Colten Moore, an extreme quad rider who will be performing tricks and flips 80 feet through the air. He is one of only three riders in North America who flips quads professionally, and he’s been a champion of the X Games in the extreme snowmobile competition. He will be joined by Humboldt’s own Julian D’Usseau, an extreme motorcycle rider who travels the world performing on the Metallica Tour. These two men will also perform at Saturday’s rodeo.
The Daredevil Sweethearts, a trick riding group from Red Bluff, will be tearing up the arena Saturday and Sunday at the rodeo. These talented women will amaze you with equestrian skills and courage. Saturday night at Bulls, Bands and Brews, Chad Bushnell and his band will be playing some great country-rock in the middle of the arena. Chad is an up-and-coming country musician and recently signed a recording contract in Nashville. He hails from Red Bluff, but has many ties to Humboldt County. A big thanks to all of our sponsors and volunteers, especially the city of Fortuna, the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department and the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce, for we could not make Fortuna Rodeo Week happen without them. ocal artist Stock Schlueter has been capturing the alluring beauty of Humboldt County’s rivers, sunsets, people and industry for 40 years. Raised in Willow Creek, he grew up hunting in the Trinity Alps and Marble Mountains with his father, climbing steep mountain trails on packhorses. He attended College of the Redwoods, continued his art education by earning a BFA at Northern Colorado University and then returned home to begin showing his work throughout Humboldt County. Schlueter’s paintings richly illustrate the majesty of the North Coast while subtly measuring changes over time in fishing, logging and ranching. Schlueter was selected as the 2015 Fortuna Rodeo artist and got to work right away at last summer’s rodeo, shooting photographs he hoped
would show the action and power of the riders. Typically, Schlueter works as a plein air, meaning open air, painter where he creates landscapes outside with his view as the subject. This wasn’t an option for the rodeo, he says, chuckling. So, based off his own photographs, Schlueter created the perfect composition of horse and cowboy in motion, evoking the energy and excitement of the rodeo. Schlueter has shown his work at galleries and shows throughout California. He paints from a studio in Old Town Eureka where he opens his doors the first Saturday evening of every month for Arts Alive. Law enforcement leads the parade By Nora Mounce
H
istorically, the grand marshal of the Fortuna Rodeo parade has been an individual, couple or family chosen for its positive contributions in the community, integrity and service. Grand marshals have also helped shape the Fortuna Rodeo into the weeklong, celebrated family event it is today. In 2015, the rodeo board chose the theme, “Honor the Badge,” naming Humboldt County’s law enforcement officers as its parade grand marshals. Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey says he was honored and surprised to learn that local law enforcement officers would lead the parade.
“It’s a whole new thing for, us being involved in the parade to that extent. We’ve always had our posse involved, but this year I’m encouraging all our staff to participate,” Downey says. Having law enforcement officers lead the parade will “honor and respect law enforcement who are out there sacrificing for the community.” While the Fortuna Police Department has played a major role in every rodeo, with staff either actively participating or patrolling the parade, this year Rodeo Board President Shannon McWhorter says the board invited all the regional police departments to participate. the rodeo committee settled on the Honor the Badge theme. “This year it’s important for police officers to be honored and the parade will give the community a chance to show their respect and appreciation for their service,” he says. Both Downey and Fortuna Chief of Police Bill Dobberstein point out that this year’s theme includes all branches of public safety, not just law enforcement. And Dobberstein thinks 2015 is particularly good year to give the community a chance to celebrate everything the Fortuna fire and police departments do for the Friendly City. “In light of national events, I think its good that our city chose to recognize public safety in a positive light. ... We have
a good relationship with the community; we’re very open with what we do, we listen to community concerns, we try to stay engaged in the community and that leads to better relationships overall,” Dobberstein says. “If there’s an issue, we address it head on. We work hard to maintain a good relationship with the community and [be] visible on a regular basis.” At noon on Saturday, July 18, the rodeo will celebrate the hard work of all those who keep Humboldt County safe, with law enforcement leading the parade down Main Street in downtown Fortuna. Wave as they go by on horseback, on foot and in patrol cars. The procession of floats, bands and horses wraps up on Fortuna Boulevard at Smith Lane. ✪

Chad Bushnell Catch a rising star By Nora Mounce
R
ising talent Chad Bushnell is no stranger to the Fortuna Rodeo. Born and raised in Red Bluff, he grew up participating in the Junior Rodeo, following in his parents’ footsteps. This year he’ll be bringing his five-piece band and their energetic blend of vintage and modern country music to this year’s Bulls, Bands and Brews on Saturday night. Bushnell started singing and playing guitar when he was 4 years old and as a teenager sang at football games, conventions and church functions. Bushnell’s talent and love for country music has led him to open for big names in the industry from Scotty McCreery to Billy Currington to Neal McCoy. A highlight in Bushnell’s career was traveling to Nashville and meeting the legendary Teddy Gentry, of Alabama fame, who has continued to support Bushnell’s music. Bushnell’s first album You Can Drive My Truck features his low, soulful voice and sounds as though he’s easily had two lifetimes of heartbreak and years on the road, even though he’s a recent college graduate. His biggest influences are Vince Gill, Merle Haggard, Alabama and George Strait. Don’t miss Chad Bushnell’s Fortuna Rodeo debut when he and his band take the stage on Saturday night. Know your rodeo authorities By Nora Mounce
T
he California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association (CCPRA) wants you know there’s something for everyone at local rodeos happening throughout the Golden State this summer. Whether you’re curious about bull riding or looking for a way to entertain the kiddos, the CCPRA is a nonprofit organization that sponsors a heavy tour of local rodeos, concluding at the final championship in Corning, California October 9-10. A gathering of CCPRA members might include weekend cowboys, cowgirls, clowns and bull riders who are teachers, salespeople, students and barbers during the week. Their love for rodeo brings them together to put on a great show and preserve its family-friendly traditions. Humboldt’s own Fortuna Rodeo is one of the CCPRA’s most popular destinations on the California rodeo tour, something Fortuna Rodeo Com-
mittee Chair Shannon McWhorter attributes to the city’s mild climate and rich ranching history. Cowboys and cowgirls on the rodeo circuit vie against one another in events such as breakaway roping to steer wrestling to tie down roping. Along with pride and the glory, contestants also compete for their slice of $500,000 in prize money. Among the 2015 favorites are: Blake Hirdes of Turlock, California, who has won the team ropers header contest for the past three years and lassoed $10,943 in the 2014 season; Suzanne Williams of Gerber, California, who has been the breakaway champion since 2010 and hauled in $9,194 last year; and Kris Matthews of Redwood Valley, California, who rode to the buzzer for $12,073.51 in bull riding. Be on the lookout for these riders in the Fortuna arena this year!

Making barbecue magic By Nora Mounce
A
ccording to Dave Nicholson, in order to get on the barbecue crew, somebody has to die and leave you his or her spot. Fortuna Rodeo board members Robb Foley and Nicholson head up the barbecue committee, a responsibility they don’t take lightly as they oversee some two dozen volunteers who make the magic happen. About half the volunteers are Fortuna Chamber of Commerce members and the other half are Fortuna volunteer firefighters, and some of them have been fixing rodeo barbecue for nearly 25 years. In 2014, they fed 2,100 people plates of delicious, pit-cooked beef with all the fixins — a rodeo record. Here’s how they do it: Saturday Morning - A crew of 12 unpacks the meat from the delivery truck, rolls it in Carlo Rossi white wine (“God forbid if it’s not Carlo Rossi,” Nicholson says) and then into containers with the signature rodeo barbecue spice mix. (I’m working on cracking that trade secret, but no one’s talking … yet.) Saturday Afternoon - At 4 p.m., the crew lights the three fire pits at Rohner Park. Every hour following, they pile more scrap wood on the fire, stoking the coals to perfection until about midnight. Wee Hours of Sunday Morning - The crew puts the grates on around 1 a.m. and, if and only if, the coals are the right shade of blue, the meat goes around 1:30 to 2 a.m. Finally, they cover the pits with plywood and wet canvasses. The hardworking barbecue team has put their baby to bed — now it’s time to walk away for a few hours of precious shuteye and hope for the best.
Sunday Morning - Nicholson, Foley and company are back no later than 6:45 a.m. Though many things could go awry in the night (falling meat dousing the fire, juvenile tomfoolery), Nicholson says, “Knock on wood, nothing has happened yet!” Meanwhile, the bean crew has already been concocting their sauce (another trade secret) and cooking beans since 6 a.m. 11 a.m. Sunday - Ring the dinner bell, the barbecue is ready! The crew puts outs 4,000 punds of beef, 80 gallons of potato salad (made by Wally at C.C. Market and Deli in Rio Dell), 1,800 rolls from Ray’s Market, 80 to 100 pounds of beans and, don’t forget, Jell-O parfait. Proceeds from the $15 per plate sales support the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, so eat up and bring your friends. Other delectable outposts not to miss during rodeo week are the annual Fortuna Kiwanis Club breakfast and the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary concession stand. For over 20 years, the Kiwanis Club has been cooking up breakfast fit for cowboys on Saturday morning starting at 7 a.m., including pancakes, sausage, ham, orange juice and coffee. At $6 per plate for adults and $4 for kids, it’s a deal. And those hard-earned dollars go toward the Kiwanis Club’s many community service efforts including youth scholarships, local sports teams and literacy projects. Finally, Moonlight Catering of Fortuna and Women’s Auxiliary volunteers will offer a mess of delicious eats at the rodeo grounds concession stand starting at noon on Saturday. ✪

A week jam-packed with family fun! By Nora Mounce

ids count the days until summer — and some days, when the little ones are bored and it’s hot, we don’t blame moms and dads for counting the days until school starts again. Fortuna Rodeo comes to the rescue with a week of family-friendly and affordable activities to keep your little cowboys and cowgirls active and entertained. Tuesday: Skedaddle down to the Redwood Village Shopping Center at S. Fortuna Boulevard and Redwood Way from 6-8:30 p.m. for an evening of free activities. Tykes can jump in the bounce house, get their faces painted, ride horses provided by Korobi Stables and join in on a candy walk. Watch your kids get excited about summer fitness during demonstrations by Healthsport (recently relocated to Main Street in Fortuna) and Cobra and Butterfly martial arts studio. Kids can get creative with sidewalk chalk and watch local firefighters compete in a firefighter’s muster of drought-conscious (i.e. waterless) games. And don’t forget to dig through your closets for plaid shirts, cowboy hats and mini belt buckles so your little ones can compete in a Western costume contest at 7:15 p.m. (register by 6:30 p.m.). Wednesday: If the kids are hankering for more fun, mosey to Main Street between 6-8:30 p.m., where Fortuna Ace Hardware sponsors an assortment of street games guaranteed to keep your kids moving. They can compete in a stick-horse race (wooden steeds provided), scale a climbing wall, get their faces painted, try the egg toss, jump in the bounce house, rope a dummy and
join in the frenzy of the annual Tony Johnston Penny Scramble. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be on hand, grilled up by the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department’s muster team. The carnival sets up shop on Wednesday morning just outside the rodeo area and opens at noon every day through Sunday. The Fortuna Rodeo keeps the carousel turning and house favorites like the Zipper running all day long. All day wristbands are $25 (restrictions apply). The Junior Rodeo kicks off Wednesday evening in the rodeo grounds. Show your support for our young Humboldt County cowboys and cowgirls! Entry is $3 for adults and $1 for kids. Thursday: Junior rodeo continues all day Thursday and wraps up with barrel racing at 7 p.m. The Fortuna Junior Rodeo is known for the largest cash prizes in Northern California and is a hotly contested showdown on the circuit. Saturday: Everyone loves a parade, especially the kiddos. Starting at noon on Main Street, you can guarantee your little ones plenty of police officers and firefighters to wave at with this year’s “Honor the Badge” rodeo theme. The best float wins a $200 prize and, for the first time, a $1,000 cash award will go to the best junior civic parade entry incorporating this year’s theme. Nonprofit youth organizations with members 18 years old or younger who are working toward the betterment of youth and the community are eligible. ✪

H
ow do you match the insanity of quadiators — racers zipping around on four wheels, trying to bat the balloons off of other riders’ helmets — and quad barrel racing? Well, joining quad rider Colten Moore at Friday Night Motorsports is freestyle motocross legend Julian D’Usseau, who will be returning for his fourth rodeo performance. Not only will D’Usseau wow the crowds by soaring through the air on a Yamaha YZ250, he’s a source of hometown pride and a great role model for the many Humboldt County kids who love to ride dirt bikes. Born and raised in McKinleyville, D’Usseau is a 2001 graduate of Arcata High School and is now raising his own family behind the Redwood Curtain. As a kid, he had to plead with his mom, a local soccer coach, for his first two-stroke dirt bike. Looking at D’Usseau’s long list of medals over his professional freestyle motocross (FMX) career, his persistence apparently paid ounds r G off. Bulls, Bands & Brews Saturday Night By Nora Mounce
I
n 2013, the Fortuna Rodeo organizers pushed back their cowboy hats and scratched their heads to come up with a way to attract community members who may not be privy to the finer points of breakaway roping to the rodeo. The rodeo committee, some of them 20-year veterans, worked together and branded the quintessential rodeo event: Bulls, Bands & Brews, an evening of entertainment that ties together country music, good beer and the excitement of bull riding. If you’ve often thought about attending the rodeo but never taken the plunge, post up in the rodeo grandstands this year and enjoy the third annual Bulls, Bands & Brews on Saturday night. Getting things started at 7 p.m. will be cowboy-turned-musician Chad Bushnell and his countryrock band. For Bushnell’s Fortuna Rodeo debut, he’s bringing out
original songs and favorite country covers, including a Bakersfield set covering Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam, and closing with a tribute to the King, Elvis Presley. While he’s a growing name in country music, Bushnell is humble about his success and looks forward to returning to Fortuna, where he competed in junior rodeo as a kid and where he’ll be cheering on his younger sister this year. At 8 p.m., it’s time for the main event: live, big-time bull riding. The rodeo’s biggest names will be competing for a $3,000 cash purse — their quest for glory hangs in the balance for eight long seconds of grit and panache atop a bucking bull. Riders try to keep one hand on the rope and one hand in the air while being judged for style, consistency and time in one of rodeo’s most dangerous and thrilling events. Competing in three qualifying sets
of 10 riders, followed by a final ride by the highest scorers, the 30 competitors are the region’s best from Northern California, Oregon and Nevada. You’re going to need a cold beer while you watch those cowboys sweat it out in the dust. A selection of taps from Fortuna’s own Eel River Brewing Co., Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Coors will be flowing all night long. Don’t forget, the rodeo board returns all its proceeds back into the community. Last year, the board donated over $25,000 to improvements in Rohner Park, including a bocce ball court and a new softball field. We’ll drink a cold beer to that! Gates open for Bulls, Bands & Brews at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $7 and all ages are welcome. The event is proudly sponsored by Whitchurch Engineering, Les Schwab Tires and the Law Office of Thomas M. Young riders take the reins By Nora Mounce
Y
oung cowboys and cowgirls alike will be trotting to Fortuna this summer for the 24th annual Fortuna Junior Rodeo. The Friendly City is proud to host the largest junior rodeo in Northern California, a key event for budding riders and ropers. The Fortuna Junior Rodeo Committee says the mission of the event is to “conduct, promote and produce youth athletes for the champions of tomorrow.” After the dust of this year’s competition settles, six all-around champion trophy saddles, 28 trophy buckles and many cash prizes will go to the hardworking winners. Sitting down to chat with three of Humboldt County’s own junior rodeo stars, I quickly learned that competition rodeo is a way of life and that these kids aren’t just horsing around. Siblings Bailey and Danny Fales and their cousin Carli Roberts make up the whole the Eureka High School rodeo team. While rodeo supporters across California are petitioning to get public schools to recognize rodeo as a sport, the trio says there are many other young Humboldt County competitors they hang out with in the rodeo circuit. Like other members of the Northern California Junior Rodeo Association, Bailey, Danny and Carli are passionate and hard-working kids who spend one weekend a month from April through August on the road at rodeo competitions throughout the state. It goes without saying that their parents are equally dedicated, driving the kids to the stable to feed their horses at night and hauling campers across
the state to cheer on their cowboys and cowgirls. Bailey Fales, who competes in breakaway roping and team roping, says she has fun meeting new people in junior rodeo and likes seeing how different people compete. The Fortuna Junior Rodeo will be one of Bailey’s first big competitions since recovering from a broken ankle she sustained goat tying. Bailey will be a junior at EHS this fall and serve as secretary for the Future Farmers of America, while Carli takes the reins as vice president. Both young women are considering continuing with rodeo in college. Nipping at their heels is Danny Fales, who starts as a freshman at EHS this fall. “Kids [at the rodeo] are doing the same events as adults and doing just as well,” he said. His events are goat tying, team roping, breakaway roping, ribbon roping and chute dogging, a junior-rodeo-only event in which novice cowboys and cowgirls must wrestle or “dog” a 400- to 500-pound steer to the ground. To qualify as a legal fall, all four of the steer’s feet must face the same direction as its nose once the animal is on the ground. Without that precision, the takedown is called a “dog fall,” and the young competitor must either try to turn the animal’s head to match its feet, or let the steer up and start over. Disqualifications are handed out for losing contact with or tripping the steer. Certainly doesn’t sound novice to me. Don’t miss one of the best junior rodeos around on Wednesday evening and Thursday during the Fortuna Rodeo. ✪

Colten Moore returns to quad jumping
X
Games fans, off-road enthusiasts and thrill seekers alike will be jockeying for the good seats when Colten Moore rolls into the arena for Friday Night Motorsports and again on Saturday night. Moore is a celebrated freestyle snowmobile competitor with two X Games gold medals to his name, and he just competed in his sixth X Games in Aspen, Colorado this winter. The 25-year-old high-flyer from Krum, Texas defied odds by excelling in snowmobile competitions, a sport more commonly taken on by Americans and Canadians in the cold, snowy north. Growing up in Texas, fueled by a love for adrenaline and competition, Moore and his older brother Caleb taught themselves to land ATV tricks in a foam pit their father built in their backyard. When Colten Moore was graduating from high school, his teacher asked students to write down their future goals. For Moore, this was easy. He only wrote down one thing: go to the X Games.
By Nora Mounce Enter snowmobiles, a sanctioned sport at the extreme competition since 2007, with events in speed and style and long jump. Moore took home gold in both. To the delight of Humboldt County fans, Moore will return to his roots when he comes to Fortuna, taking off from dry land (no snow here) and flipping 80 feet in the air — a rare sight, as he’s one of only three riders in North America who flips quads professionally. Each time Moore launches his four-wheeler or snowmobile into a daring jump, he’s not alone — the legacy of his older brother is along for the ride. Moore knows all too well the risk riders undertake in freestyle snowmobile competitions, and that even among the most talented, accidents can happen with the powerful 450-pound machines. In 2012, 25-year-old Caleb Moore was competing in the X Games snowmobile freestyle event when the skis on his snowmobile caught an edge in a landing he had performed countless times before. Caleb
was thrown over the handlebars and hit by his vehicle. A week later, he succumbed to a heart contusion caused by the accident. Moore’s death is the only fatality in the 20-year history of the X Games. In the years since, the X Games and ATV community have rallied around the Moore family, continuing to honor Caleb’s spirit — no one more so than his younger brother Colton, who in 2014 claimed the X Games snowmobile freestyle gold medal in his brother’s memory. After his win, Colton said it was a dream come true and that he knew his brother was riding with him. In the controversy that followed over the safety of the sport, Colton surmised his feelings about continuing to compete in an interview with ESPN: “It would be terrible for something like this to end because of [Caleb’s death]. That is definitely not what Caleb would want.” See Colton Moore’s passion for the sport fly high on Friday night and Saturday at the rodeo. ✪

Bull Riding Maybe the most popular event and probably the most dangerous, bull riding is a battle of wits and brute strength between a cowboy and the most dangerous of ranch animals. The cowboy attempts to ride for eight seconds, strapped to a bucking, whirling one-ton bull with only one hand. This is a judged competition: Points are awarded for the cowboy’s form and for the difficulty of the ride. But if the rider is bucked off, or if he touches the bull with his free hand, he is disqualified.

Bareback Riding Bronc riding comes from the essential cowboy skill of taming (or “breaking”) a horse for use. As in bull riding, a contestant must stay atop the wild animal for eight seconds using only one hand. But the bronc rider has additional considerations — he is also judged on how well he spurs the horse to action with his boots, and he must keep his feet in the stirrups at all times. Bronc riders come out of the chute with their legs over the horse’s shoulders in order to give the animal the initial advantage. Sponsor: Humboldt Fence Company

Saddle Bronc
Like the saddle bronc event in many ways — but more slippery. In the bareback event, the bronc rider goes into action with one hand in a simple rigging and nothing at all between him and the horse except a pair of blue jeans. Once again, the contest is judged on the skill and form of the rider as well as the liveliness of the animal. Contestants must stay on for eight seconds to qualify for a score. Calf Roping Steer wrestling (or “bulldogging”) tests the cowboy’s strength as well as his skill at handling both horse and cattle. In this timed event, the steer leaves the chute at a run, tailed by one horseman (“the hazer”) who keeps the animal running in a straight line. After a head start, the barrier holding back the mounted contestant is tripped, and the steer wrestler races after his quarry. When he catches up, he dismounts his horse at a run and transfers his weight to the steer, which he then wrestles to the ground. Quickest time wins, but as with all timed events the contestant gets a 10-second penalty if he leaves the chute too early. Sponsor: Wyckoff’s Plumbing

Calf roping — also called “tie-down roping” — introduces another element into the mix. Not only must the cowboy rope the animal, as in breakaway roping, he must also bring it to a full stop and immobilize it. After the animal is lassoed, the cowboy dismounts and runs to the calf carrying a small rope in his teeth. He then throws the calf to the ground and binds

Team Roping The only team event in the rodeo, team roping features two different styles of lasso work. A steer leaves the chute running. After a short head start, two cowboys follow on horseback. The first must rope the animal’s head or horns to stop its forward progress, moving it into a turn. Then the second — the “heeler” — attempts to lasso the animal’s rear legs. A five-second penalty is assessed if he manages to rope only one leg. The clock is stopped when the steer is fully roped and the contestants’ two horses face one another.

The premier women’s event in the rodeo, barrel racing is the ultimate test of speed and agility. Riders attempt to run a cloverleaf pattern around the three barrels in the fastest time possible. The quickness of the clockwise and counterclockwise pivots around the barrels are crucial, as is the final sprint back to the starting line. This fast-paced event is the purest test of a cowgirl’s lasso skills. As in steer wrestling, a calf leaves the chute at a run and after a head start trips the barrier holding back the cowgirl. The contestant then gives chase and attempts to lasso the calf’s head. She has the rope tied to her saddle horn with a string and halts her horse. Time is called when the calf, which is still running, breaks the string.

tretch and hydrate, partners. The Annual Fortuna Rodeo 5K Run/Walk gets moving on Sunday, July 19 at 9 a.m. on the corner of 13th and Main streets. Everyone in the community is welcome to lace up their sneakers and join in on this town tradition presented by the Fortuna Rodeo and Six Rivers Running Club. It’s a straight shot down Main Street onto Fortuna Boulevard, and the course winds up back at the starting point. It’s not just a great way to justify a barbecue binge later that day — funds from the race also benefit the Six Rivers Running Club’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life team and the Fortuna High School Cross Country Program. And of course it’s a competition, too, with the Merchant Team trophy going to the team that crosses the 5K finish line first. The History of the Fortuna Rodeo Origins of a local tradition

he Fortuna Rodeo had its beginnings way back in 1921 when the Cattlemen’s Association of Humboldt County planned a picnic. Ben Snodgrass was director of judges with William Graham of Bridgeville, Joe Russ of Ferndale and Buff Robinson assisting. The first event had a 25-piece band, a grand ball and a chicken supper. There was a gratifying response with 3,000 people attending. That was the beginning. … A great tradition began in Fortuna — the Redwood Fortuna Rodeo. Humboldt County has been an agricultural center for California, as its first settlers were ranchers. It’s a little wonder that Fortuna lays claim to the oldest and longest running annual rodeo on the North Coast. Because of that, the rodeo has a long-standing history of attracting some of the top livestock and rodeo cowboys on the West Coast. By 1926, the event had turned into a rip-roaring three-day whirlwind of thrills and excitement. Doug Prior of Blocksburg was the chairman, and W. F. Robinson was committeeman in charge of the stock and the grounds. Ready
were three carloads of bucking horses and 60 head of wild range cattle, secured by E. B. Lytle and Charles Moore. Crowds came, enjoyed the Maverick ball and the Sombrero ball on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. In 1930 there were more changes — now came riders from Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity and Mendocino, instead of professional riders. Putting on the show were G. E. Peterson, Charles Wescott, Art Chandler, George Graves, Cecil Evers, Paul Friedenbach, Jack Benson, Louis Gist, H. W. McWhorter, Fred Krieg, Frank Brelle, Paul Mudgett, L. L. Bryan, L. S. East, P. A. Hugo and others. One year the rodeo went “long hair,” when Frederick Jagel of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Company sang every afternoon. By 1939, the rodeo had simmered down to a twoday event, but packed with just as much dynamite as the longer celebrations had been because the citizens continued to make every day preceding it a build up for the real thing. About 10,000 people attended
the show in 1939 and though the new grandstand was not yet completed, the show was bigger and better than ever. In 1941 the rodeo joined the National Rodeo Association of America and at the time became known as one of the best and biggest rodeos in Northern California. The blight of the war fell that year, and with it fell the Fortuna Rodeo, for the next five years. But in 1946 it rose again to newer and greater proportions. Bill Clark rode in the 1946 rodeo at the age of 80. In 1948 Stella James of Willits was chosen as the Rodeo Queen, with Pat Barnwell of Bridgeville and Naomi Pries of Ferndale as her attendants. The 1948 rodeo events grew to include a parade downtown, penny scramble, street dancing and vigilantes jailing local men who chose not to grow a beard for the event. Since its beginning, new faces and new hands guide the destiny of the Fortuna Rodeo while keeping alive the old traditions. That tradition continues today in Fortuna, every third weekend in July. ✪

Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle
The Gary Edgmon Memorial Saddle is awarded to the top local all-around cowboy. Competitors must reside in Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity or Mendocino counties to qualify for this award. Edgmon was the owner of Ferndale Meat Co. and a member of the Fortuna Rodeo Board for many years. He was in charge of the rodeo’s deep pit barbecue while on the board and he served up a great meal. Edgmon passed away in 1998 and a memorial saddle has been given in his name ever since. Gary was a lifetime Fortuna resident known for his lighthearted humor and a giving personality. Fred Barry Memorial Buckle
The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle, named after one of the larger figures in Fortuna Rodeo lore, is awarded yearly to the Humboldt County top hand. Born and raised in Humboldt County, Barry was a cowboy and rancher. He won the all-around cowboy award at the 1941 Fortuna Rodeo and would later go on to have a successful rodeo career on the national circuit, competing in many of the big rodeos, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendelton Roundup and the Calgary Stampede. After retiring from rodeo, Fred ran a successful cattle ranching operation in Loleta and continued to be a big supporter of the Fortuna Rodeo. The Fred Barry Memorial Buckle carries on his spirit.

Tom McWhorter Memorial All-Around Buckle
This buckle is presented to the Fortuna Rodeo’s all-around cowboy. Precision Intermedia proudly sponsors this award. Rodeo has always been a McWhorter family tradition. For 54 years, Tom McWhorter served on the Fortuna Rodeo Board, enjoying the sport and camaraderie that are part of the cowboy way of life. From 2005 until 2012, Tom’s family granted the Tom McWhorter Rodeo Scholarship to local high school rodeo participants in the California High School Rodeo Association. Tom grew up on a ranch in Yager Creek and always enjoyed going to the high school rodeos, watching the young people develop their skills and grow into world-class athletes. “District Two has had a number of state and college champions who started in the local high school rodeo circuit,” said McWhorter’s son Ted, who continues the family’s rodeo tradition working for West Coast Rodeo Co. “We have an excellent reputation for outstanding competitors from our district.” ✪

Maps for the walking tour are available in most of the shops in Ferndale. LOLETA & VICINITY About 10 miles north of Fortuna, Loleta exit off U.S. Highway 101. BEAR RIVER CASINO U.S. Highway 101 to Ferndale exit. 11 Bear Paw Way, Loleta, (800) 761-2327 Open seven days a week, it boasts more than 300 slot machines, the Grizzly Bear Den poker room, nine table games, a restaurant and sports bar. CANNIBAL ISLAND BEACH/HOOKTON BEACH From Fortuna: about 20 miles northwest via Loleta. Two popular beaches in Loleta are Cannibal and Hookton. Cannibal Island Beach is a good launching spot for kayakers where the Eel River forms an estuary and the water is mellow and flat. A popular fishing spot is the public pier on the South Jetty at the end of Hookton Beach. It’s a good place to catch kelp bass, snapper, ling cod and perch. LOLETA CHEESE COMPANY From Fortuna: about 10 miles north off U.S. Highway 101 in Loleta, 733-1871. Family owned and operated. Visitors welcome Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See where the cheese is made through large viewing windows and try it in the tasting room. RIO DELL & SCOTIA Located on U.S. Highway 101, about five miles south of Fortuna. Scotia was an original “company town” built
around the redwood sawmills. Across the Eel River is Rio Dell. Be sure to visit the Scotia Inn, Scotia Museum and take a self-guided tour of Scotia Fishery’s freshwater aquarium. SURROUNDING REGION AVENUE OF THE GIANTS (State Route 254) From Fortuna: about 12 miles south off U.S. 101. As you drive along this two-lane, 31-mile scenic highway lined by giant redwoods, look for turnouts and footpaths that take you from the Avenue to secluded beaches and swimming holes on the Eel River. CARLOTTA From Fortuna: about six miles east off State Route 36 Just east of Fortuna on State route 36, in Carlotta at the 6.3-mile marker, is a popular swimming hole. Park at the turnout and walk down to the river. RICHARDSON GROVE STATE PARK From Fortuna: about 52 miles south on U.S. 101, Garberville, 247-3318 Richardson Grove State Park is where you first encounter significant old growth redwood forest when coming north. The ninth tallest coast redwood, a fallen tree ring study conducted in 1933, and a walk-through tree are immediately available. The park also features a 1,000-acre day-use park with picnic areas, swimming, fishing, nature trails, a visitor center, summer campfire programs, food concession and camping. VAN DUZEN COUNTY PARK From Fortuna: about 12 miles east on State Route 36 Enjoy old-growth redwoods, two drive-in campgrounds, picnic sites and group camping.
