hat does it mean to be “green?” The word is incredibly misused, so no wonder we’re a little cynical when we hear it describing a new car, cellphone or toothpaste. Green-washing is the preferred corporate strategy for promoting products in glossy ads and TV commercials.

Maybe we should be talking about that other overused word — “sustainable.”

Sustainability is “the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely.” But let’s get real.

Is anything really sustainable?

In our world of finite resources, nothing is infinitely sustainable.

Maybe a better way to think of environmental sustainability is as the ability of one generation to meet its needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Native Americans

call this the Seventh Generation concept — the idea that we should be thinking seven generations into the future as we make choices today. Is that something we can really live by in this age of digital communications, Internet economy and instant gratification? How many computers, kitchen appliances and television sets can each of us claim over our lifetimes? Can a market economy driven by consumerism be sustainable?

This is a worldwide challenge we’re facing today and it’s critical for the future of humanity.

One measure of our impact on the planet is our carbon footprint — a measure of the carbon emission a typical American produces in everyday life. According to a study conducted by students at MIT, even the average American homeless person has a carbon footprint that’s twice the worldwide average. Accord-

ing to Science Daily, “While the students found that the average annual carbon dioxide emissions per person in the US was 20 metric tons, the world average is four tons. Even the US lifestyle with the lowest emissions — a homeless person who ate in a soup kitchen and slept in homeless shelters — had a footprint of 8.5 tons.”

Poet and author Gary Snyder once said, “The most radical thing you can do is stay home.” Short of that, however, we need to rethink much of the way we use energy, grow our food, use water, move from here to there and manage our other daily activities. The good news is that it’s easier and cheaper than ever to make some fundamental changes in our lifestyles. The bad news is that too few of us are doing what it takes to help impact the vast changes coming with climate change and

exhausting natural resources.

The first step, however, to make any change is to embrace the change in our own lives and then with our families, our neighbors and our communities.

“We’re working to become a net-zero energy business,” says Sam Pennisi of the Lady Anne Victorian Inn. “We’ve been doing extensive composting of all our waste, use nontoxic compounds for much of our cleaning — such as baking soda where possible — and have reduced our water usage considerably. We are now tearing out our lawn and replacing it with native, drought-tolerant plants. We’ve cut our energy use through efficiency and conservation and the next step is to produce the remainder of the power we use with solar PVs to become a net-zero energy building.” continued on next page DO IT GREEN GUIDE 2014 5

Steve Salzman, a civil engineer by profession, a partner in Greenway Partners and a life-long environmentalist (and founder of Plan It Green) says, “We originally focused on green building design for architects, engineers and the building construction industry and we promoted the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system as a template for green design. Over time, however, it became clear that green design needed to permeate every aspect of our lives.”

Being green also includes how you deal with waste. Sarah Schuette of Dirty Business Soil Consulting defines sustainability this way: “The concept that something cycles back around to support the system without having an end point.” She explains that trash has an end point, but compost cycles nutrients back to feed or sustain the system again. “A sustainable community is one where our ‘life energy’ loops back around into our community, not just sustaining it, but amplifying it as well. An unsustainable community, is one where our life energy is harvested and not returned.”

According to Patrick Murphy from Humboldt Hardware, a wood gallery and furniture manufacturer, “No waste leaves our shop. All my products can be completely recycled. We are as close to 100 percent green as a business of our kind can be.”

Murphy explains that 90 percent of his products come from wood that has been recycled locally from other products. “I brought in over 40 truckloads of used kitchen remodeling waste and only three kitchen baskets have left in a whole year — typically only plastic wrappers and cardboard that I recycle.”

Murphy also says that he actively works on reducing waste

through his purchasing habits.

“Nothing that I buy comes in a package. I buy products directly from suppliers and don’t need any packaging. I see dumpsters full of garbage every week — we have one small trashcan a week and it’s mostly garbage I pick up left by customers.”

Murphy tested all his power tools to determine how much power is required and noted how little it takes to run the power-saw through the year because he runs power tools infrequently and does a lot of handwork as well. The Redwood Coast Energy Authority donated a used solar Photovoltaic demonstration trailer, so he’ll be running almost entirely off-grid now. “Most of my woodworking tools can be powered now off the trailer,” he says, “and we can also work outside and do not need inside lights either. “ Shawn Ellsworth, owner of Comfortable Efficiency, an energy retrofitting contractor, says he likes “the idea of ‘sustainability’ instead of the term ‘green.’” He feels strongly that green-washing has ruined the term “green.”

“Sustainability means multiple systems and how they interact with each other — natural and man-made,” he said.

“Whether it’s the human body, your home or a car — whatever system you talk about you want the optimum efficiency for the system as a whole.”

Ellsworth says that we need to look at durability, health, comfort and happiness when looking at a system — not just the financial bottom line.

We need to look at life-cycle costs for a decision — higher initial costs spread out over the lifetime of an investment, but we need to look at day-to-day operating costs over time as a major cost factor. Maintenance, ease of use, reliability and com-

fort are all aspects to consider when making a decision on any purchase.

Ellsworth further suggests that we need to quantify and verify energy savings: “We use advanced technology to measure and verify if what we’re doing is working to help determine options … but no one technology is the final answer — everything interacts together so we use different technologies for different decisions.” According to Ellsworth, the biggest challenge is education and awareness. “We need to have the ability to understand the problems that we face and then the tools to fix them. Climate change is on top of the list of problems we’re facing today, social well-being and economics are a close second. Personal energy use is a big factor in all of this, so each of us can take control of that aspect of our lives and help make a difference.”

Ultimately, nothing we do is truly sustainable unless we don’t consume anything and don’t impact any other systems. But since that’s impossible, we must do the next best thing — have as little impact as possible, tread lightly on the earth and try to leave things a little better than we found them. It may not be enough to stop climate change, but it’s all one person can do, and if enough people do it, dramatic change can result. The Green Business Pledge

o up the ante for participating in the Do It Green Guide, Plan It Green developed a Green Business Pledge that we asked local businesses and organizations to fill out and make accessible to the public online.

View the results at northcoastjournal.com to see how businesses are walking the walk and not just talking the talk. Over time, we hope that all North Coast businesses and organizations take this step to become more environmentally aware, sustainable and efficient.

The Green Pledge asks about topics including: • General company policies about green business practices • What the company tells customers about its green practices • Waste management policy

(recycling, composting, etc.)

• Waste reduction (using reusable dishes and glassware, reducing paper consumption, etc.)

Energy-saving Tips For Businesses

Y

ou can improve your business’ bottom line by taking the following steps to make your office more energy-efficient.

Lighting

Turn off lights when not needed. For example, turning off fluorescent lights saves energy, extends overall lamp life and reduces replacement costs.

Turning lights on and off does not use more electricity than leaving the lights on.

Reduce or replace inefficient, outdated or excessive lighting within your building.

When replacing old lighting equipment, evaluate new technologies that may need fewer fixtures and/or fewer lamps within existing fixtures.

Ensure that light levels will remain at adequate levels before changing out technologies and/ or reducing number of lamps.

When fluorescent T-12 lamps burn out, consider retrofitting fixtures with T-8 lamps and changing from magnetic ballast to electronic.

Replace incandescent “EXIT” signs with LED signs. LEDs use about one-tenth the wattage and last 50 times longer than incandescent-lamp signs.

Install lighting occupancy sensors that automatically turn lights on or off depending on

occupancy. These sensors work well in areas such as conference rooms, break rooms or individual offices that are not occupied continuously.

Heating and cooling

Establish a preventative maintenance program for your heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and systems.

Ensure that you regularly: Change or clean all air filters, preferably every month.

Clean all heat exchanger surfaces, water and refrigerant coils, condensers and evaporators.

Repair leaks in piping, air ducts, coils, fittings and at the unit(s).

Replace defective equipment insulation, ducting and piping.

When old motors fail, replace them with premium efficiency motors that operate at a lower annual cost. Specify the proper sized motor for the application.

Temperature control In winter, set office thermostat offices between 65 and 68 degrees during the day/business hours, and 60 to 65 degrees during unoccupied times.

In summer, set thermostats between 78 and 80 degrees during the day/business hours, and above 80 degrees during unoccupied hours.

Adjust thermostats higher when cooling and lower when heating an occupied building or

unoccupied areas within a building, e.g., during weekends and non-working hours.

During summer months, adjusting your thermostat setting up one degree typically can save 2 to 3 percent on cooling costs.

Consider installing locking devices on thermostats to maintain desired temperature settings.

Install programmable thermostats that automatically adjust temperature settings based on the time of day and day of the week. If you have multiple HVAC units, set thermostats to return to the occupied temperature a half hour apart.

Install plug load controllers in cubicles to control multiple loads like monitors, task lights and fans. These devices use a motion sensor that is incorporated with a plug load surge suppressor. Inactive equipment can be shut down when the cubicle is unoccupied.

Specify Energy Star equipment when purchasing or negotiating a contract for new vending machines. The Energy Star machines incorporate energy efficient compressors with refrigeration and lighting controls.

Efficient vending equipment can save 30 to 50 percent over older equipment.

To conserve energy and reduce internal heat gain, turn off computers, monitors, printers and copiers during nonbusiness hours.

According to E-Source, using a laptop computer instead of a desk-top system can save 80 to 90 percent in electrical costs.

When purchasing new office equipment, look for the Energy Star mark. The Energy Star office equipment program promotes energy-efficient computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, scanners, copiers and multi-function devices that automatically power down during extended inactivity. Energy saving of 50 percent or more is possible.

Educate and encourage employees to be energy-conscious and to offer ideas about how energy can be saved. Employee buy-in and involvement can make or break your company’s efforts to conserve energy.

Designate a “responsible party” to maintain and to promote good energy practices for the organization and/or facility.

his is the most exciting part,” says Ben Mattio as he carefully examines the sheet of red vinyl he has sealed around the house’s front door. The vinyl has what looks like a large fan in the middle of it. Inside, Mike Bishop adjusts the dials of the Blower Door Manometer. A low mechanical hum begins, and air begins to filter from the home’s interior to the outside. Mattio waves us around to the side of the house, taking care to make sure all entryways are closed.

The Redwood Coast Energy Authority sure knows how suck the air out of a room.

“Most of the work we do when we assess a house is just data collection,” he says as he waves a smoke pencil around the home’s windows and light fixtures, watching for a telltale waver in the smoke that will reveal a source of leaking air.

“We make sure everything is burning cleanly, do combustion safety tests, look at the heating system and the crawl spaces.”

Mattio and Bishop are building analysts, part of a small team of professionals trained in helping California residents save every penny possible in energy costs. The RCEA, a local government joint powers agency, has been going strong since 2006. It has been recognized by the state for its adherence to best practices and has helped Redwood Coast residents save thousands of dollars. Renters, homeowners and business owners can receive a free assessment of their buildings as well as lowcost or no-cost installation of upgrades such as efficient lighting, refrigeration and other appliance improvements. The home the team is looking at today is being upgraded under a special program called Energy Upgrade California.

PG&E customers who receive both electric and gas from the company can qualify for up to $6500 in rebates after the RCEA assesses their home.

After analyzing all of the collected data, the RCEA will help the homeowner compare different installations to see which upgrades will be the most cost effective.

There is a small fee for the assessment under the Energy Upgrade program, but watching Mattio and Bishop at work it’s clear that they’re worth it. Mattio climbs up on a stepladder and carefully waves the smoke pencil around light fixtures in the kitchen.

“People often think that weather stripping windows and doors is going to save the most

on their heating costs,” he says.

“And it does help, but you lose a lot more heat than you think around appliances, light switches and such.”

The homeowner, who asked not to be named, says that he built the house in preparation for retirement and wanted to be smart about how he consumed energy in order to budget correctly for his golden years. To that end, he insulated the floor and installed solar panels. After all, it’s not just the cost of buying a house, but the cost of maintaining it as well.

As the homeowner speaks, Bishop reappears from a back room and suggests that we follow him. He and Mattio have found a significant source of heat loss.

“We heard a whistling sound when we came in,” he says, motioning towards the large, built-in bathtub. “Put your hand down there,” he says.

“You can feel the air just moving like crazy.”

We oblige and — sure enough — drafts of cold air are whistling from the cabinet below the tub, drawn through the house by the blower door.

“It’s probably open to a crawl space,” says Bishop, adding that often leaks introduce air to the house from “unhealthy” areas such as crawl spaces or attics, seriously impacting indoor air quality.

Air sealing the crawl space and insulating it properly will save this homeowner a substantial amount of money in energy costs over the years.

The homeowner asks if they can take a look at the fireplace next.

The RCEA technicians spend a significant amount of time during their assessment inching their way through dirty and dusty areas under and above homes looking for gaps, insulation issues or evidence of pests that might cause structural damage. In order to do this safely they wear full coveralls, gloves and

respirators, and undergo fitness testing. When asked if he has ever found anything unusual in a crawl space, Bishop laughs.

“Do you want a list?” he asks.

Along with vermin and deceased family pets, Bishop has uncovered the occasional long-lost treasure.

“I found a case of aged Scotch whiskey in an attic once,” he says. “The homeowner was pretty pleased. He had no idea it was up there.”

Asked if he’d kept any for himself, Bishop frowns.

“Well, no, I didn’t really think about it.”

And you can tell from his face that he hadn’t. Now that’s the kind of guy you want crawling around under your house.

obody likes trash on the beach. Everyone is against polluted waters. So why do we still see garbage lining the highway and streams listed as impaired due to contamination? Because the connection between how we live and the effects of that living on our waterways isn’t always obvious. To improve what’s troubled and keep clean what’s healthy, here are 10 ways you can make a difference.

1. Make less trash. Buy your food from the bulk bins using your own containers. Use soap bars instead of liquid soap pumps. Make your own yogurt.

Repair things instead of replacing them. Opt for reusable bags, mugs, water bottles. Avoid purchasing things wrapped in unnecessary packaging. Shun plastic when other options exist. Buy less.

2. Cover your cans. Even wellmeaning people accidentally create litter by not securing trash can lids. From critters strewing garbage about to lightweight bits flying out of the back of a dump-running truck, debris gets out into the world

and then into our waterways.

3. Hold on to your butt.

Cigarette butts are the most littered item in America and hardly innocuous. The chemical-laden filters can take decades to degrade. In the meantime, wildlife is poisoned and the view is ruined. Don’t toss that toxic butt on the ground — dispose of with the rest of your unrecyclable trash.

4. Skip the straw. Whether soda or cocktail, sip it from the side. Straws are simply pieces of trash waiting to happen — an item paradoxically designed to be used once, but that lasts forever. If the thought of your lips on cup’s edge troubles you, pick up a reusable straw. You’ll be the most sophisticated drinker in any room.

5. Avoid herbicides and fertilizers. When chemicals leach into a body of water, they can devastate ecosystems.

Nitrogen and phosphorus, commonly used in fertilizers, lead to a surge in algae growth when they enter a water body, killing off existing aquatic life, for example. Petition your local garden supply store to stop

selling synthetic fertilizers and biocides (pesticides, herbicides, rodenticides, etc.).

6. Clean up after your dog!

Some beaches and trails have built-in pet waste stations, but you should come prepared with bags and gloves for proper collection and disposal of your pup’s poop to keep those icky bacteria out of waterways.

And speaking of pets, never flush kitty litter. It can contain pathogens harmful to sea life.

7. No drugs down the drain.

Pharmaceuticals harm aquatic organisms by interfering with their growth, and some meds can create bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. Take unused medications to the Humboldt Waste Management Authority (HWMA) or an Open Door Community Health Center. Call HWMA at (707) 268-8680 for times and days.

8. Vehicle maintenance. Leaking fluids? All that antifreeze and oil goes right into the storm drain and into our beautiful bay and ocean. Keep your car running right and, to get next level, use it minimally.

Opt for biking or bussing in-

stead. You won’t risk polluting the ground with dangerous mixtures and you’ll help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

9. Adopt a beach! The Northcoast Environmental Center coordinates Adopt-A-Beach, a Coastal Commission program encouraging groups to focus on the beach of their choice with at least four cleanups per year. You’ll make a tangible difference in saving individual animals from harm and improve the immediate view. See www. yournec.org for details.

10. Support your local conservation groups. Long-lasting change stems from education, outreach and policies that focus on protecting our wild waterways from pollutants and inappropriate uses, and that seek to stop trash at its source. To accomplish all this takes a team of people dedicated to protecting our environment. Help out by joining, donating and/or volunteering.
