A week from today, players from 10 nations will face off in the IIHF 2009 World Junior Championships. On Jan.5, one team will win the gold medal.

If you didn’t fork out as much as $2,300 for a pair of tickets to every game, you still have a shot at being part of the best hockey feast Ottawa has ever seen.

Tickets are available from authorized and unauthorized websites, and prices are very reasonable if you’re willing to skip the Team Canada games.

Canada will play four games in the round robin at Scotiabank Place – versus the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Germany and the United States. Face value for those tickets is $91 and up, and elimination games cost even more.

If you decide to watch Team Canada on TV, that still leaves dozens of games you can see live at Scotiabank Place and the Civic Centre for as little as $11 a ticket.

That should put international hockey in plenty of Christmas stockings.

The best bet to see a game is the online marketplace where package holders can jettison tickets they are unable to use. Considering that many of the 31 games in the full package are played concurrently – one at the Civic Centre and one at Scotiabank Place – there is a good selection of tickets for the single-game fan.

The authorized online marketplace can be reached from the www.capitaltickets. ca website by scrolling down near the bottom of the home screen. Look for the link to “2009 IIHF World Junior Championship Ticket Marketplace.” Earlier this week there were more than 1,000 listings with tickets for sale.

More good news: sellers can only charge face value for their unwanted tickets.

There is a $3.50 service charge to use the system, but that is charged per game, not per ticket. You print the tickets on your own printer.

The unauthorized ticketbuying options – where there is a risk of not receiving what you pay for – include EBay and hundreds of ticket brokers you can Google. Tickets from scalpers outside the rinks are hit or miss, depending on lastminute supply and demand, and hanging around outdoors

GETTING THERE There’s no telling how long the current bus strike may last, so travel options may be limited to cars and private shuttles operated by some bars.

When there are back-toback games, expect traffic to be an issue, especially for the second game when departing fans will be trying to exit while incoming fans are arriving.

“We certainly anticipate the vast majority of fans will be staying for both games,” said Ottawa Senators communications VP Phil Legault, who is also handling media relations for the WJC. Legault said Scotiabank Place has managed the bus strike for recent Senators games by adding 500 parking spots, and that has proven to be enough to meet demand.

THE BIG PAYOFF Whatever the traffic challenges, the end result prom-

ises to be loud and exciting.

Ottawa residents who attended the U-20 World Cup soccer games at Lansdowne Park in 2007 also know that mixing in a few international fans into the crowd can bring a whole new atmosphere to the stadium, or in this case, rink.

There are some traditional rivalries: Sweden-Finland could get blood boiling, and Russia will line up against tiny Latvia. And if you like to root for the underdog, Kazakhstan might be your team. The relegation games – consolation playoffs that pit the weakest teams against each other – should be spirited. Under IIHF rules, the worst team in this tournament faces the humiliation of being demoted from the 10-team international A pool for 2010. The risk of landing in the B pool, playing teams like France and Italy, should spark some great efforts.

Even if you don’t see Canada in action, you will see many of the best junior players in the world. All will be good, and all will be playing for their country – a recipe for good hockey.

his column is written for those who are spending Christmas with their memories.

Of course, we all spend Christmas with our memories to some extent. But those of us who are still in the throes of celebrating the holidays with young children have too much on the go to sit and think about time passing.

Christmas is for children.

So when they are young, our focus is to: 1. Get the Christmas list from the child; 2. Attempt to streamline Christmas list to a more reasonable size; 3. Locate and purchase all items remaining on the list; 4. Find successful hiding spots for purchased items; 5. Find uninterrupted time to wrap said gifts (usually with kids banging on the door, wondering what you are doing in there, or late at night, after they have gone to sleep); 6. Learn how to recreate all of the Christmas traditions of your childhood for your own young, including Christmas decorating, legends, activities and baking; 7. Find time to carry out all aforementioned Christmas traditions; 8. Take part in school Christmas pageants, staff parties, neighbourhood and family gatherings; and 9. Record all events on camera in case you are too frazzled to “live in the moment” and truly enjoy the festivities.

If that is an accurate description of your Christmas, congratulations! Your life is full. You will appreciate this busy phase after it has passed; trust me.

But what about those people who are alone at Christmas?

Time marches on. Children grow up and move out, relationships end and partners leave, family members age and pass on. Christmas can be a pretty depressing time for those who have no family members to celebrate with.

This is my first Christmas without my father. His absence will be felt, to be sure.

DIANA FISHER WEEKENDER STAFF sisted on shopping alone for the perfect gift for my sister and me (I say “gift” singular because he often bought us the same thing while we were growing up).

His gifts were always very original, but the one I remember most clearly was the walkie-talkie. I thought that was the coolest gift ever.

Last year Dad got Mom, Cathy and me tickets to see “Mamma Mia” at the NAC. I was raised on ABBA. Another perfect gift.

We continue to mention Dad at every family gathering – and at every opportunity – so that he will live on in our memories. But we are lucky because we have each other. We are a close-knit family; we live near each other and we do things together every week.

If you are alone over the holidays, I urge you to get out and surround yourself with positive people. Get together with old friends and neighbours, or take part in an open community event.

Christmas is no time to be alone. Force yourself to get out.

Whenever there is a big event in your life, and your family dynamics or circle of friends changes, it’s time to think of forming some new traditions.

Keep moving forward, while still paying homage to Christmas past. I’m no expert, but my life has been

through so many dramatic changes, I have learned this is the only way to go.

As this column goes to print, I will be up to my eyeballs in sheep. We are expecting a new crop of lambs to arrive sometime between Christmas and New Year’s, so I have to get ready.

First, I will take a broom to the lovely artistic display of cobwebs in the lambing area. Then I will make sure there is enough hay in each of the lambing pens in our Maaaaaaa-ternity ward.

Next, I will help the Farmer to test all of the water hoses.

Finally, I will strap a couple of water buckets into each pen and then we will be ready. Let the games begin.

I was thinking it might be helpful to have a baby monitor set up in the barn, as most of the births start in the wee hours of the morning.

However, I don’t even know if sheep make noise to signal the onset of a birth.

It’s like a tree falling in the woods and making a sound.

Do they make noise when we aren’t there? If there is no new food arriving on the scene, I’m not sure the sheep have much to talk about. I don’t imagine a birth would get them too excited.

Of course, the drama of difficult births always makes one want to do everything possible to make things run smoothly in the future.

Now I understand why some farmers choose to have a spare bed in the barn. Usually you can tell if a ewe is going to go into labour in the next few hours. There are signs.

If I see these signs this time, I will make a note to go out to the barn every few hours throughout the night.

The Farmer and I take turns doing the night checks.

I wish we had a video surveillance camera trained on the sheep with a monitor in our room. That would make my sleep easier.

Every year we have something new to celebrate, and something or someone else to remember from the past.

Good luck with your merry-making; may you form some wonderful memories to last your whole life long.

e have come to that point in time when it's really, really important that you read and act on this editorial plea to take the time to tap out a few hundred words that recap your achievements over the past year and your hopes and goals for 2009.

That's right, folks, it's last call for submissions for our year-end edition when we open our pages to you to tell your stories in your own words and photos.

Don't be shy. We know you've had a busy year and we know we didn't make it to every event — perhaps, in our defence, because organizers forgot to tell us it was coming up or even that it had just happened.

This upcoming year-end special edition is our way of saying we care about what you accomplished and what you hope to do next year.

As you'll read below, we know that the Osgoode Lions have been busy raising money for worthy causes and good deeds. And we know they're not alone.

So come on all you service clubs who have helped build arenas and Legion branches and so many other things.

Come on all you minor sports groups who have had team and individual successes in 2008.

Come on all you schools and skaters, dancers and curlers, youth and seniors groups and associations.

Heck, we're even offering space to our city, provincial and federal politicians to look back and ponder, and look ahead and dream. But please keep it short so we can get in as many as possible. A couple of typed pages, double spaced, should be lots. E-mail is better than hard copy; photos should be 300 DPI JPG attachments, or dropped off at our office so we can scan them.

We'll fit in as many as we can. Merry Christmas!

Trust me, third time's a charm and this really, really is my last farewell.

There have been several remarkable events in the past few weeks involving how we are governed and even how we get to work — or don't.

They are remarkable in the sense that I, for one, and possibly you, never thought we would see in this country.

Quite simply, the voice of the common citizen seems to have been lost.

And the voice of the frontline rank-and-file seems to have vanished with it.

It began with the federal governing party attempting to change funding rules, which would have adversely affected opposition parties' efforts to raise money. That,

it was feared, would mute their voice and our defence against political abuses.

There may indeed be a need for change in political funding to enhance free elections. But all this move

seemed to engender was a an unholy coalition cabal, which seemed to be trying to steal power, which its individual component parts could not win at the polls.

The stakes escalated until the governor general intervened, sent all the players home and the rest of us rolled over and went back to sleep.

Then things got worse.

With its coalition in tatters, the Liberals opted to rush a new leader to the fore.

No time to give voice to the party faithful — the elites would anoint and the rest would learn to live with it.

Democracy in action?

I think not.

Then bus drivers climbed out of their vehicles, grabbed picket signs and slowed traffic even more than they

would normally do with their articulated cruisers jackknifing and blocking all lanes on busy wintry city streets.

The union president would later admit, freely and frequently, that the membership would not be given a chance to vote on the city's new offer. He, and perhaps his executive minions, would decide if and when they would return to work. The drivers seem split between labour solidarity and lamenting their lost voice.

How did we come to this?

How can government and labour hope to rule or operate efficiently without ever consulting those on their front lines who will be most heavily impacted?

What happened to common sense and a moral com-

pass? What happened to the concept of free speech?

Think this through.

Imagine a private-sector company that operated in a void because it simply would not listen to its frontline staff — those with their fingers on the pulse of their clients. Chaos and defections would ensue. The archaic management model of "command and control" has been discredited and abandoned by enlightened, successful companies. Even the Marines and police shifted to a model of enhanced consultation and collaboration between management and staff. To exclude input from the rank-and-file is a recipe for disaster. That's no way to run anything.

ABOUT SHEEP AND SHEPHERDS

LARRY ELLIS SPECIAL TO THE WEEKENDER Long before man began to write history, shepherds watched the flocks of sheep in the fields to guard them from wild animals. Today sheep are raised in all parts of the world; Australia is the world’s largest sheep - producing country raising more than one sixth of the worlds sheep. In Australia there are about 15 sheep for every

person and in New Zealand that figure is close to 20.

Sheep live an average about 13 years. Sheep yield wool, meat and leather, the wool is valuable in proportion to its bulk and can be stored for long periods of time as it does not spoil.

Domestic sheep vary greatly in size, some may weigh as little as 100 pounds while others may weigh as much as 225 pounds.

Throughout history sheep have generally been raised in places that are far from cities

and thickly populated areas.

Ever wonder why shepherds have to watch the sheep?

No one has to watch cattle or horses, dogs or cats.

First - sheep lack a sense of direction, unlike cats or dogs sheep get lost easily - even at home where everything is familiar. Second - sheep are virtually defenceless, most animals have some defence like sharp teeth, sharp claws or nails, good speed, the ability to hide or keen eyesight; sheep have none of these. Third - sheep are

easily frightened and fourth - sheep cannot find water or food, they have to be led to it.

The shepherds on the hillsides 2,000 years ago were watching their sheep when the angels delivered the message of Christ’s birth.

When they arrived, at the stable in Bethlehem there were probably sheep and lambs nearby. Most manger scenes that we see at Christmas time show white, woolly sheep around the stable.

The highlight of the past week was the lighting of the Kiwanis Christmas Tree at the corner of Bridge and Main Streets and the dedication of a plaque on the tree to honour Kiwanian the late Ralph Moore.

A large turnout of the Moore family, Kiwanians and friends were on hand for the ceremony. Stop by and have a closer look at the plaque.

Kiwanians are reminded that regular meetings are on the first and third Tuesdays in the fine new Legion Hall – come for 6 with dinner at 6;30.

A line from the Kiwanis magazine about Kiwanis involvement during the earthquake in China tells a lot about Kiwanis – “On earth, besides Mother and Father, there are others who love me” – from a seven year old girl. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

SPECIAL TO THE WEEKENDER The Ottawa Catholic School Board has elected Trustee Gordon Butler as Chairperson of the Board for the coming year and Trustee Mark D. Mullan as ViceChairperson. The Board’s Annual General Meeting was held Tuesday, December 09 at the Catholic Education Centre.

Mr. Butler has been a trustee for five years and was most recently vice-chairperson of the Board. “I am honoured to serve as your chairperson for the next year.

My goal is to work with the Board to ensure the highest quality Catholic education for each of our students,” said Mr. Butler.

Newly elected ViceChairperson Mark Mullan stated, “I will do my very best to represent the trustees and our constituents.” Mr.

Mullan has been a trustee for 12 years.

At the Annual Meeting Director of Education, James McCracken, presented the 2008 Director’s Annual Report that highlights some of the accomplishments of the Board the past year. “The devotion and dedication of all our staff ensure that the system and schools continue to improve in all three key areas: Success for Students, Success for Staff and Stewardship of Resources,” said Mr. McCracken.

The Director congratulated Mr. Butler and Mr. Mullan, adding that he is looking forward to working with them in the months ahead.

Mr. Butler is Trustee for Zone 6 (Knoxdale-Merivale/ College) while Mr. Mullan represents Zone 8 (Alta Vista/Gloucester-Southgate.

McAmmond helped launch gold rush National Hockey League superstars Peter Forsberg and Markus Naslund.

But Dean McAmmond and a group of plucky Canucks had other ideas.

“We weren’t supposed to beat Sweden,” the Senators centre said in looking back at the ’93 event, which was played in Gavle. “They beat us 8-3 in exhibition and Peter Forsberg didn’t even play….

They were supposed

to win it. They had a good team and there was a lot of pressure on them and they probably felt that.

“But the crazy Canadians were just chomping at the bit to overthrow the big dogs.”

Back then, there was no playoff format at the WJC. The top three teams at the end of a roundrobin tournament won the medals. So when McAmmond and Co. shocked the mighty Swedes 5-4, their path to the gold was essentially assured.

“It was kind of anti-climactic,” said McAmmond. “We had to beat Japan to have the best record and we beat them 8-1.”

For McAmmond, the gold was sweet redemption of sorts.

The year before, he’d been cut from a Canadian team that went on to finish sixth at the 1992 world juniors in Germany.

“I was disappointed,” said McAmmond, a first-round draft choice by the Chicago Blackhawks earlier that year. “Not as much disappointed as kind of put out. I had never been cut before

and I thought I could have been on the team.”

The feeling was completely different a year later.

“I don’t remember that process as much as the year before, when I got cut,” said McAmmond. “You always remember when you don’t make it. When I made the team, I remember how it all played out. We flew over to Sweden and we went to a little village (Leksand) and we stayed in little cabins and practised and had some exhibition games there.

It was fun. I enjoyed it.”

McAmmond roomed with current Anaheim Ducks forward Rob Niedermayer – “both not real talkers, both real laid back” – and played on a line with another pair of future NHLers, Jeff Shantz and Nathan Lafayette. The Canadian roster also included current Senators teammate Jason Smith.

“We had a good team,” said McAmmond. “We had lots of good players that went on (to the NHL). We had (Chris) Pronger and (Paul) Kariya and Marty Lapointe.

“I was glad that we played well as a team. I remember we

played the U.S. the first game.

We struggled a bit against the U.S. to get going and ended up beating them. Manny Legace was our goalie and he played so well for us.”

That 1993 team started a run of five world junior golds for Canada – a feat the boys wearing the red maple leaf will be aiming to match at the 2009 WJC, which will be played Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Ottawa.

“It’s big for those kids. Real big for those kids,” said McAmmond. “There’s a lot of pressure on them because they’re at

home.”

He knows they’ll have plenty of support beyond the fans who will pack Scotiabank Place to watch them play. Even 16 years ago, McAmmond knew he had plenty of company on his golden ride.

“It’s a pride moment,” he said. “You do feel like the whole country is watching and cheering.

In other countries, like the United States, it’s not a big deal. But I feel it’s Canada’s game.

“When you’re at the world juniors, you’re representing your nation. It’s a feel-good moment.”

Thank You

For the past 2-1/2 years, I have been the principle caregiver for my wife Margaret MacMillan. Three years ago, Marg was diagnosed with A.L.S. Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Marg’s death came peacefully in our home on McGovern Road with I and her two cats by her side, she passed away. I will never regret that I took the time to be with her in her final years. I could not have accomplished this care without the help of so many wonderful and dedicated people in our community.

Reta Lackie of Oxford Mills passed away in Ottawa on November 19, 2008.

Reta was born on February 14, 1922, the daughter of Luella (Davis) and Fred Hutchins in her grandfather’s century old stone farm house in Oxford Township. Her parents were farmers and owned a small saw mill. After Reta married Lorne Lackie on February 3, 1944, they moved to the stone farm house and she lived there for the rest of her life.

Reta was the oldest of four children. Her sister Lois MacNilage (Ray) is living in Kemptville, and her sister Ruby McNeilly and brother Bill Hutchins have predeceased her. Living on a farm all her life Reta was familiar with hard work.

Barn chores, housework, gardening, pickling, canning, preserving and baking were a part of her daily life particularly when she was raising four children who loved her dearly – Doris Eyre (John) of Elgin, Dianne Hoy (Don) of Smiths Falls, Patricia Lackie (Stephen Williams) of Orleans, and Brian Lackie (Patti) of Brampton. Visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great joy - Julie, Peter, John Miles and Sarah Brown (Langley, B.C.); David, Annelie, Noah and Kajsa (Vienna, Virginia), Daniel and Katie Eyre (Seattle, Washington); Kelly Ann Hoy (Smiths Falls); Stephanie Lackie (Brampton), Jason Lackie (Brampton); and extended grandchildren Marc and Sophie Williams (Ottawa); Eric Williams (Toronto); and Marie Williams (Navan).

Reta enjoyed knitting, crocheting and embroidery work and she made many beautiful quilts, hooked and braided rugs. She had a talent for growing beautiful violets and geraniums. Reta enjoyed having company and playing euchre. She was affiliated with St. Andrew’s Church in Bishops Mills and was a member of the local Women’s Institute.

Many friends and family attended the visitation at Grant Brown Funeral Home, Kemptville, on November 21, 2008, and the funeral service at St. Andrew’s United Church, Bishops Mills, on November 22, 2008. Rev. Ed Gratton and Rev. Mary Lou Shortill joined together to lead a very touching and compassionate service to celebrate Reta’s life. Mildred Adams, a long time friend of Reta’s, played the organ and Ray Adams sang Amazing Grace. Heartfelt words of remembrance were shared by Reta’s daughter, Patricia Lackie. The burial was at the Bishops Mills cemetery. David Eyre, Daniel Eyre, Ron Guy, Jason Lackie, Lynden MacNilage and Marc Williams were Reta’s pall bearers. A reception, catered by the Bishops Mills United Church Women, was held after the service.

Reta blessed us greatly during her 86 years and in turn she was blessed to be rich in spirit, family and friends. She will be forever in the hearts of her husband, children, grandchildren, sister, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret Jane MacMillan (nee Neller) of Kemptville passed away on November 25, 2008 at the age of 64.

Margaret was born on October 28, 1944 in Montreal, Quebec, the daughter of William Neller and Ethel Ruth Whytock. She attended George Esplin Elementary School and John Grant High School in Lachine.

Margaret married James Allen MacMillan on July 15, 1967 in Lachine, Quebec.

She worked at Eaton’s in Montreal as an Accounts Payable Clerk and then moved on to become a Personal Support Worker for Bayshore Home Care.

In 1974 Margaret and her husband, Jim, moved to Mountain, Ontario where they resided until 1981. They then moved to Richmond, Texas until 1988 at which time they moved back to the Kemptville area.

Margaret belonged to St. Andrews United Church and was a member of the United Church Women.

Among her many interests, Margaret loved to garden. She also loved visiting and caring for people in the community who needed a friend. She was a kind and caring lady and loving wife and friend.

Margaret is survived by her loving husband Jim, her son Curtis Allen (Laura Tracey) of Sooke B.C., her daughter Jennifer Brooks (Robert) of Ventnor, her grandchildren William and Jessie Brooks and Mikayla Tracey, and her sister Connie Simmons (Herb) of Lachine. She was predeceased by her parents.

Visitation was held at Grant Brown Funeral Home Rolston Chapel, Kemptville on November 28 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm.

Funeral Service was held in the Chapel of the funeral home on November 29 at 1pm with Pastor Bruce MacCallum officiating.

Jane Boyd was the organist and a touching eulogy was provided by Betty Poirier.

Pallbearers were Dale Boyd, Henry Van Blanker, Guy Poirier, Robert Hannah, Ken Keith and Gill Lance. Interment followed at CL13145 Adams Cemetery.

Evans and staff for answering all my questions and for your caring attitudes; to the Red Cross Home Care, co-ordinated by Danielle Bourdeau, Kim McConnell, Virginia Segovia, Pam Foley, Kim Lemon, Ann Pelly and Anna Bwijivire, thank you for your care and friendship; to the nurses from Bayshore Home Care, Doreen Wilshire and Joanne Davis, I am truly grateful for your advice, your knowledge and your dedication; to the Ladies at Community Care Linda Burgess, Tina Cousineau, Chris Clapp and Emily Tessier, what a competent group of specialists who practiced their skills but never forgot to listen, thank you; to the Shopper’s Drug Mart pharmacy group your assistance was greatly appreciated.

Thank you to my neighbours on McGovern Road East who supported and comforted us during Marg’s illness. I would also like to thank them for their support of the A.L.S. Society. I would be amiss if I did not single out Sandra Scully and her daughters Grace and Rosemary and her mother Marilyn Sealing of South Mountain. I could never thank you enough for your love, flowers, meals and attention. To Ken and Tammy Keith next door and Sarah and Jean Guy Landreault across the road, I could never have made it without you. To Jessie Hutchinson of Mountain, Marg’s good friend and best visitor a gal or guy could ever want, I thank you so much.

On the 25th of November 2008, my dolly passed away, a loving wife, mother and friend.
