They came in droves to honour the “everyday Canadian heroes� of our past and present. The gym at St. Leonard’s Catholic Elementary School, in Manotick, was packed with children, adults, veterans and media as local politicians gathered to award poppy plaques to our war veterans. The plaques are part of what began as “Celebrating Nepean’s Finest,� an initiative by the Nepean Museum to personally and individually thank each local veteran, expanding outward postamalgamation, growing into a national program to honour “Canada’s Best.� The assembly was treated to fantastic voices singing the national anthem and Alyssa Mahoney's solo of an original composition based on the intrinsically Canadian poem, In Flanders Fields. The Remembrancethemed Canadian historical moments that sometimes still air on TV held the audience's rapt attention as each video faded into the next, showing Canadian forces at their finest from World War I to Canadian-led United Nations efforts in overseas.
CTV’s Michael O’Bryne emceed the event and directed the majority of his comments to the children in the audience, first asking their ages, then telling them that many, many soldiers who fought in both World Wars were sometimes as young as 16. This day belonged to the local survivors. “We are here to say ‘thank you’,� said Nepean-Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre, who has had a large role in the poppy plaque program. “Often we think Canadian vets are distant heroes; but they live right here. These heroes are your neighbours.� He then urged the Grade 6 students who participated in the program to talk to their veteran neighbours and learn about the past. “Today we celebrate their courage by saying we will not forget,� he said. As the 60-plus veterans paraded single-file and their names read aloud, the room filled with pride and defeaning applause. After watching a music video for A Pittance of Time (about the two minutes of silence we observe on Remembrance Day), the crowd dispersed to chat with old — and new — friends and vetereans. Coyote Ugly A complainant reported seeing a coyote in her backyard on the morning of Oct. 29. Upon arrival, police found the coyote had already slipped back into the Manotick woods. Coyotes are adaptable and opportunistic creatures, so the best way to avoid coyote conflicts is to proactively take steps so to avoid attracting them to your home in the first place. Here are a few quick and easy things you can do: — dispose of garbage in secure containers that cannot be opened by wildlife; — leave food waste in your garage or any inaccessible areas; — use securely enclosed compost bins and do not dispose of meat, dairy, or egg products in your compost; — if you have fruit trees, remove any fallen fruit from
the ground; — install outdoor lights that are motion activated; and — clear away bushes or weeds close to your home where animals might seek cover. REMEMBERING WAR
IN TROUBLING TIMES
R
emembrance Day services will assume a new, more poignant significance this November 11. Crowds have grown larger in recent years, even as the number of surviving veterans dwindles as those who survived shot and shell fall victim to the ravages of disease and old age. That means that young Canadians — whether born here or chose to come here from distant lands — are taking note of the sacrifices of previous generations who bought them the freedoms they enjoy today at a terrible costs in lives, limbs and mental health. We need more to do show up. We need more parents and teachers and journalists to explain that by revering the memory of those who sacrificed their youth to war is not the same thing as glorifying or even condoning war. In fact, Remembrance Day proves just the opposite. If you want to hear anti-war sentiments, ask a veteran. They've earned the right to be heard on the subject. Ask the parents of a son or daughter serving in Afghanistan and you will hear their pride in their child's service to country and conscience, even as they pray for their safe return and perhaps silently wish they never had to go. Remembrance Day is a very basic reminder that freedom comes at a price. A heavy price, paid in full by a few for the many. Nowhere is that more true than in journalism. It is not the Charter of Rights or an Act of Parliament that preserves free speech and a free press in this country. Those are just words on paper. It is the heroic sacrifice of our young men and women in uniform who guarantee the words are honoured. We thank them here every day.

emembrance Day has always been special for me. It was largely due to my father who drove his Sherman tank ashore at Juno Beach on D-Day. Dad never talked much about the war. A few funny stories and ships filled with vomit enroute to Normandy in the stormy English Channel were pretty much it. I was initially a tad disappointed to see he did not sport a Victoria Cross among his campaign ribbons, and couldn't help but note he had fewer medals than Audie Murphy. But I was likely about six at the time. I grew older and wiser and have long since learned that no one's worth is measured in awards and medals.

Just staying the course when survival instinct and common sense tells you it would be better to duck and run, is courage in its own right. I joined the Royal Cana-
dian Legion the year they allowed sons and daughters into its halls as associate members. It's one of only two associations I've joined in my life. I was also sponsored to join a police club,
which allowed firefighters and ambulance jockeys in as associates. I joined the Legion in part out of respect for my father and what he did as a young man. (The police club meant beer was cheap and you always had a ride home.) Both were filled with war stories. And long before I'd earned the right to tell my own, I loved sitting and listening to others tell theirs. Very, very, very few did not involve a laugh. Having said that, you must remember that both the legion and police club were filled with wise-cracking, broad-shouldered folks who could take a joke as well as play one. They also tended to have a

rather dark sense of humour. Gallows humour. The refuge of the damned and the condemned. And once in a great while, there were tears. The tears flowed without shame, prompted by laughter at situations and experiences most people in polite society could never believe would or could happen. And they flowed when memories turned to friends lost in battle or the line of duty. And whenever that happened, the others at the table or in the room would fall silent, out of respect or sympathy or just because the story conjured up their own inner demons. Minutes later, everyone would be laughing again. Dad died at 58, the night
Rene Levesque was first elected to power. He was a farm boy when the war broke out. He didn't have to go but he did. He didn't hate Germans. He'd never met one. He did, however, hate walking behind the plow horse. That nag drove him into uniform. I miss our chats, the laughter and occasional tear. I had so much I wanted to ask him ... and then he was gone. I've toured Vimy and visited Passchendaele and battlefields in between. I view them as hallowed ground. But if you want to understand Remembrance Day, chat up a vet ... and listen closely to what they say. They may mention fear, may shed a tear and will toast lost fallen friends. "Cheers!"

Following another flyover on Aug. 28, and a few subsequent on-site visits, the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has now removed approximately 130 acres from the 650 acres they originally proposed to be redesignated as Provincially Significant Wetland (PSW) back in 2005. This represents eight of the original 20 areas, and affects the properties of about 14 of the original 60 property owners. They have said all along that the area was artificially flooded by a blocked drainage system along Flow-

ing Creek between Fernbank Road and Flewellyn Road, and the resulting spillage has been overflowing onto the surrounding landscape for the past 20 years. This caused the trees to die off, giving the appearance of a wetland area. A drive along Fernbank Road, in the vicinity of the former Goulbourn Township dump, which was closed in 1982, clearly shows this to be true, as the water within the Flowing Creek culvert passing under the roadway has no movement or flow whatsoever. within the Hobbs watershed, which is drained by the Hobbs Municipal Drain. MNR’s own rules for defining wetland areas state that “wetlands must not be complexed across watersheds.” This is to correspond
with the municipal drain procedures, which state that cost allocations for municipal-drain construction and maintenance must not be allocated across watershed boundaries. The drainage costs must be allocated to property
owners within the watershed that is being drained by that particular municipal drain, as per the provincial Drainage Act.

Osgoode skip Stephanie Brown will lead her Kemptville curling team of Megan Curtain, Kara Ruiter and Amber Moulton against some very tough competition starting today (Friday) in the Royal LePage OVCA Women’s Fall Classic, hosted by her North Grenville
Curling Club. Brown’s team will face current US women’s champion and former world champion Debbie McCormick in their first game, at 10:15 a.m. The team will be back on the ice again 5:45 p.m. “It’s going to be a good game and we are all going to have to play our best to keep it close and win. It’s a little bit intimidating playing such a good team,” said Brown,
adding that while her team has played in some big competitions, they have never played in something quite this large and never against all-women’s teams, and never against such high-calibre competition. Two years ago, they won the Bantam provincials and went to the Junior provincials. This year, the team qualified for the superspiel with a five and zero record,
completing that event with a four-win, one-loss record. Brown said she got into curling because her father participated in the sport and says she grew up in a curling club. She has been a member of the Kemptville club since it opened in 2005. The OVCA event will continue throughout the weekend with a total of 24 teams competing for the top prize of $12,000.

In 2003, Ottawa City Council approved the Dogs-in-Parks Designation Policy, which provides criteria for guiding decisions on whether dog access is compatible with the overall use of a city park. Parks may be designated as: off-leash, on-leash, or dogs prohibited. That year, By-law and Regulatory Services started the process of applying the criteria to all city parks outside of former Ottawa, which already had a similar policy in place. Designations are community driven and we are seeking the input of the immediate community. OPS answers R.I.D.E. riddle: What happens when you avoid a lane check? <<< OPS From Page 3 Shortly after midnight on Oct. 25, a driver from Nepean was heading home along Rideau Valley Dr. when he suddenly spotted a RIDE checkpoint and quickly turned into a residential driveway. Without dropping anyone off, the Nepean driver attempted to reverse out of the
driveway and head back into Manotick. Before he could back out, a waiting police cruiser blocked it in. Now, imagine you are that police officer and you just blocked the vehicle in the driveway. Approaching the vehicle from the driverside, illuminated by only the headlights of your patrol car, you observe a single occupant sitting in the driver’s seat. When you attempt to
start a conversation with the driver, you notice that he avoids making eye contact and speaks to you while he is looking towards the passenger side. As you silently listen (i.e. gathering evidence) to the driver’s explanation of why he turned into a private driveway — he missed his turn a little ways back — you already know from querying the vehicle’s licence
plate that the driver lives in Nepean. As the driver speaks, you can detect an odor of alcohol on his breath. When you ask him how much alcohol he had to drink this evening, he says that he did not consume any alcohol. Because of your suspicions that the driver had consumed alcohol, you give him a roadside demand: “I demand that you provide
a suitable sample of your breath directly into an approved screening device, to enable a proper analysis of your breath to be made, and that you accompany me for the purpose of enabling the sample to be taken. Do you understand?” After saying ‘Yes’ to your question, the driver follows you back to the police cruiser where you demonstrate the Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) to him and he provides you with a suitable breath sample. As several agonizing seconds pass ever so slowly — agonizingly slow for your suspect — a foreboding message telling you, or perhaps him, to wait, hangs in the ASD screen, like an emotionless teacher holding his hand up in the air, as if to stop time, while the student waits nervously for his exam result. While you wait at the crossroads of life with your suspect, the Jeopardy TV quiz-show jingle pops into your head and, just as you get to the end of the jingle, the ASD lets out a short beep as if to say, " I have the answer and it is on the screen." With the ASD, there are only three possible results — pass, warning or fail. When considering what these scores mean, think of
it in reverse terms of exam results. Here, a pass means that you scored less than 50 per cent; a Fail means you scored greater than 80 per cent. An alert/warning is like getting a ‘D’ grade — you just scraped by and passed, but you will be added to the teacher’s watch list. In your client’s case the teachers are the Ministry of Transport and insurance companies. Responding to the beep, you gaze into the device and focus in on the result — warning. Turning to the driver, who was also prompted by the beep to return to the present time — after a flash trip into his fantasized future — you look into his eyes and tell him that he scored a warning. As the feeling of relief fills the driver’s eyes, you can still see a few question marks floating around his head. Anticipating the questions, you explain to the driver that even though he did not fail the roadside, his driver’s licence will be seized for 12 hours. He will have to make arrangements to transport him and his vehicle home.

It’s that way every time I come through these doors for any of the multitude of events that the fine people at the Mill put on for the public. I know the story of Ann Crosby Currier — the unfortunate young woman whose dress was caught by one of the mill’s turbine shafts, which then slammed her into a post, killing her instantly. To this day, 147 years later, Ann’s ghost remains. At least the Ottawa Haunting and Paranormal Group (OHPG) believe so — as do a great many others. While the last reported sighting of Ann goes back to 1997, her spirit is believed to remain on the second floor where she died. In fact, the OHPG believes there are as many as eight “entities” haunting the mill. In the basement there is believed to be Timmy, a young boy who drowned, as well as an aboriginal woman. Ann is believed to haunt the second floor, but the attic seems to be the most active (it’s also the creepiest place in the mill, in my mind) with three aboriginals, a carpenter (OHPG has photographic evidence of the carpenter) and “something else” said Carlos Sangiorgi during the lead-up to the public paranormal investigation, last Saturday. The mill, and in fact most of Manotick, is built on what used to be Ojibway land; that’s why the group believes there are a number
stairs into the basement that shows a woman between the second and third steps near the bottom. I spent most of my night with Sangiorgi, who is a relatively new member to the group, and with Anthony (Tony) Calvano, the group’s vice-president. The two men set up shop in the attic, hoping to reconstruct the conditions that led up to one of their strangest encounters with ghostly entities. It was Sept. 15, 2007 — the first time the group went into the Mill. Sangiorgi is asking questions of the entity - personal questions in Victorian-style English designed to let the entity have a feeling of familiarity (it has, after all, potentially been more than 100 years since s/he died). Calvano walks behind Touchette, perhaps four feet behind, and right after Calvano passes him, Touchette gets thrown back approximately six feet. I asked Touchette: “Did you feel anything like a push?” “No.” The best explanation is that the entity somehow
discharged its energy at Touchette which sent him sprawling backwards. The team has video of the event, but hasn’t posted it online because the quality isn’t the best and leaves too much to question. Personally, I believe the video is legitimate. When it comes time to begin the public paranormal investigation, all power is shut off in the mill. The only electronics activated are the digital equipment the team brings along to record their proceedings. Not only do they all have a battery backup, but each camera, laptop and motion detector is attached to a battery pack. All too often, those tricky entities like to suck the life out of electronics. Calvano and Sangiorgi walked the first group through the steps they would be taking; it’s necessary, when communicating with spiritual entities, to lay out some ground rules. “You have to be dominant” said Sangiorgi. “The most important thing, though: have an open mind.” The entire team has lights clipped on to their hats; lights that can switch between a white and red light (the team uses the red light because it doesn’t hurt the eyes as much as white light). Calvano and Sangiorgi switch on their red lights, bathing our small group in a macabre glow. Immediately, Sangiorgi starts speaking to the entity; reassuring it is the first priority (we don’t want an angry spirit coming at us, do we?). He wants to know if it’s the
carpenter. “My father was a carpenter,” he says to the entity. “I didn’t bring his tools … but is there something you want to finish? “Please, give us a sign.” The sign can be anything: a tap (one for no, two for yes), a noise, activating the motion sensors or even

touching a person. I’m fairly certain I heard a tap in the corner behind me and to the right; the southwestern corner of the attic. Sangiorgi kept asking questions, explaining he wasn’t going to goad the entity into getting angry because there were too many people there; he didn’t want to put anyone in danger. That was when I got cold. I refrained from saying anything because I wanted to see if anyone else would pipe up and confirm what I felt. It’s hard to describe, even though we’ve all felt it. My dad would say, “Shiver me timbers,” but it’s like a light electric current running over your skin. Calvano said when he hasn’t shaved for a couple of days, he can feel his untrimmed whiskers standing on edge. I felt that too. It’s that creeping feeling; eyes drilling into the back of your head … what was it? “The temperature just dropped,” said Calvano, holding a thermometer that tests the ambient temperature of the air. There was no draft, no breeze. But it sure got cold; the kind of deep-bone chill that doesn’t leave. I was standing right where Touchette fell when the entity pushed him last year. The carpenter is believed to hang around in the opposite corner. Was this the malevolent entity Sangiorgi spoke about? Then one of the digital cameras died. It had a full battery not five minutes earlier. That was when we pulled out the gadgets and went hunting. Calvano, myself and an elderly gentleman walked around the attic with a little device that tests for electromagnetic fields (EMF) in the area. We all give off ambient electromagnetism, so when the needle hovers anywhere from 1-4, it’s probably nothing. But once that needle spikes into the 5-10 range, then we have activity. The northeast corner, where the carpenter is believed to be, is where the needle spiked. Calvano brought his temperature sensor as well and while we were there the temperature
dropped almost two degrees in approximately 15 seconds. There was no air movement. If that’s not a creepy indictment, I don’t know what is. There was literally a ghostly entity beside us. This entire time Sangiorgi was asking questions of the entity. “Were you in a relationship when you died? “Were you used to work here without wages?” Sangiorgi asked for another sign from the carpenter that he was around; that’s when the motion sensor went off. “Tony!” Sangiorgi whispered. “Yeah, I see it.” No. We didn’t see an ap-

That’s when the motion sensor stopped its infernal screeching. But the most activity came when we stumbled across what is reportedly the box little Timmy used to play with before he died. The needle on the EMF reader hit 15. Very high.

That’s when Sangiorgi checked his digital voice recorder to see if any electronic voice phenomena (EVP) had showed up. Hollywood has toyed with the idea of EVP, namely the movie White Noise starring Michael Keaton. But that movie got it all wrong and turned into something more akin to The Ring where the entities become real through some unknown means. EVP really is just voices showing up on the tape that weren’t heard before. OHPG has a bunch of examples on its website. Sadly, we didn’t hear any voices on the tape. After hearing that the basement was a hot spot for activity, I decided to head down there and try to get in on the action. Down there we first attempted to contact Ann; who seemingly prefers to deal with women. Although that makes a lot of sense, considering she died in an age when it was improper for unmarried men and women to cavort with each other.
We all crowded around this little box while the woman kept asking questions of Timmy. “Timmy, did you hide from bullies in this box?” The needle hardly moved. “Timmy, did you hide from your friends to play pranks on them in this box?” The needle hit 15 again. Okay, this is creepy. We’re talking to Timmy and he’s responding by shooting little bursts of electromagnetism in our direction as his response. Eventually, however, his responses stopped coming. By that time is was 11 p.m. Time to head home. Driving back, I just couldn’t get warm. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d been brushed by something ethereal. It took a hot shower and plenty of coffee to get me warm again. I didn’t see anything at Watson’s Mill — but seeing isn’t everything. I felt them. I will probably never walk into Watson’s Mill again without feeling those eyes on the back of my neck. Shiver me timbers.

Slow driver loses control of vehicle along Richmond Road: OPS <<< OPS From Page 8 Traffic Accidents Oct. 29 R i c h mond Rd. and Rushmore Rd.: Shortly after 8 a.m., police were called to a single motor vehicle accident on Richmond Rd., just south of Rushmore Rd.
The driver stated that she was traveling southbound on Richmond Rd. at approximately 40 kph when her vehicle started skidding on some ice. As she lost control, the vehicle left the roadway and collided into a fence. The driver did not report any injuries and the vehicle sustained minor damage.

Senators, Gerber took time to answer a few questions about is hockey past. And a whole lot more. Q: Tell me about your first pair of goalie pads. A: Those were very, very old ones. Leather, brown, not too much padding. I think they were Coopers. I was 12 when I had those. After awhile, I got a pair where you could actually read the label on them. A few years after, I had my first pair with two colours. That was a huge thing. Q: Tell me about the first arena where you played hockey. A: That was in Langnau, my home town. It was an interesting place. Really cold, it was an old arena, 50 years old, even more. They had a butchery beside it and had the half-cut cows hanging beside the main entrance. They had them on hooks so they came out and went back in. That’s what you got to see when you went to the rink. Q: If you weren’t a goaltender, what position would you like to play?
A: Centre. You get to be a playmaker and you can dictate stuff. That would be something that I’d really love to do. Q: If you could achieve anything in hockey, what would it be? A: Of course, going all the way here in Ottawa definitely would be one of my dreams. Being better in any possible way. Scoring a goal would be something nice. Stuff like that. Q: If you weren’t a hockey player, what would you be doing? A: I’m pretty sure I’d be laying bricks or something like that. Q: If you could improve one aspect of your game, what would it be? A: It’s always good to improve your whole game. If you can elevate your game 5-10 per cent, that would be huge. Q: If you could sign any player in the world to play for the Senators, who would it be? A: If you could get a guy like (the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni) Malkin, it would be really fun for everybody. Or Joey Thornton. He’s probably the best puck-moving guy. Q: If you could play any other sport for a living, what would

How does your resume measure up?
There are plenty of guides available to help you craft the perfect resume. Therefore, you have every opportunity at your disposal to ensure your resume is well received. As a crash course in Resumes 101, consider these guidelines:
1. Do a self-assessment on a sheet of paper, jotting down the jobs you’ve held, the particulars of each position and what strengths you want to focus on. Having this information handy will let you create your resume in an organized fashion. 2. Contact information should include your full name, avoiding any nicknames. List your permanent address and telephone number. Record a neutral greeting on your answering machine in preparation of fielding messages from recruiters. Don’t put your cell phone number on the resume so that recruiters don’t catch you ‘on the go’ or at an opportunity that is not ideal for selling yourself. Also include an email address, provided it sounds professional (CrazyLady1212@ blankmail.com may turn off recruiters). Create a free email account with a professional name if you don’t want to change your primary account. You can also include your website URL if the
site pertains to your career goals or showcases a work portfolio. 3. Including an objective can be a good way to highlight to an employer the type of job you’re seeking. 4. List your education first if you are right out of school. Those with a good deal of work experience can list education at the end of the resume. 5. Use brief statements full of action words to describe the work you’ve done at each position. If you prefer a chronological style resume, include the following: * Title of position * Name of organization * Location of work (town, province) * Dates of employment * Describe your work responsibilities with emphasis on specific skills and achievements. 6. List other information you feel is pertinent, such as educational honors,
military achievements, awards won, exams or extracurricular coursework completed or any certification you may have. Keep it brief, as you can certainly expound on your skills during an interview. 7. Solicit people you trust to serve as personal and professional references. Do not include this information with the resume unless it is specifically asked for in a job advertisement. Otherwise, simply state, ‘References available upon request,’ at the bottom of your resume. 8. Run spell check and have another person proofread your resume to ensure that it is grammatically correct and free of typographical errors. 9. Keep the look of your resume as simple as possible, avoiding unusual fonts, paper colors, and shades of ink. It should be crisp and clean, and easily scanned by a recruiter in a manner of minutes. 10. Modify your resume as it pertains to each job you are seeking.
