Updates from Hillel Leadership Shalom! Last year was another year of incredible growth for North Carolina Hillel! We’re grateful for the many parents, alumni and community friends whose generous support and genuine care for our Jewish students is truly humbling. We’re honored to be the stewards of North Carolina’s Jewish future. Our 2013 Strategic Plan set out to invest in critical campus infrastructure, allowing us to reach and inspire more Jewish college students across North Carolina during this critical period in their lives. We now have Erin Rosen talented staff to mentor our outstanding student leaders at NC State University, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro and Guilford College, as well as at Carolina, where we’ve added a rabbi to our team. Our results have been outstanding. A 2016 Hillel International survey ranked us the #1 most impactful Hillel (read more on page 3)! Relative to 2014-2015: • We engaged 24% more Jewish students; • We engaged 12% more Jewish students frequently (six or more times); and • We engaged 8% more Jewish students through immersive, recurring, or leadership experiences. Ari Gauss This report provides some snapshots, telling the stories that comprise our success. You’ll meet amazing students from across the state and hear from them why Hillel matters and how important it is to have a Jewish home on campus. We’re proud to have something for everyone here. We welcome students of all of family and educational backgrounds, as well as levels of religious observance. Facilitating a vibrant Jewish campus life that fits every student’s interests and potential is our mission at North Carolina Hillel. Thank you for being our partners in delivering the Jewish future.

New National Study Shows NC Hillel Most Impactful The fundamental question a Hillel should be asking is, “Are we impacting our students’ Jewish identities?” The answer is unequivocally YES – more than any other Hillel! Hillel International surveyed over 10,000 Jewish college students in February, 2016, to learn about Hillel’s impact. North Carolina Hillel, as a statewide network of Hillels, ranks as the 4th most impactful, outpacing several Hillels with budgets three to four times our size. Taken alone, UNC Chapel Hill Hillel, our only campus comparable to the other Hillels in the survey, with a building and multiple staff, ranks #1! Hillel International determined the “Hillel Effect”: the percentage of a student’s Jewish identity that can be attributed to that student’s Hillel experience. An effect above 10% – responsible for 10% or more of the strength of one’s Jewish identity – is considered strong. NC Hillel overall, and UNC Chapel Hill Hillel in particular, cleared that threshold easily! The survey questions cluster into four content areas that comprise overall Jewish Identity.

MY STORY | Marisa Fernandez Appalachian State University ‘19 Atlanta, GA
I grew up “half” Jewish - my mom is Jewish and my dad isn’t - in a biracial household, which was also very secular. When I came to college, I knew that I wanted to explore my Jewish identity. I found Hillel at App State and it felt like home right away. In the spring semester, I was the advertising chair on the board. The rest of the board suggested that I run for president, even though I was just a first-year. I was concerned that I wasn’t “Jewish enough,” or that I wasn’t knowledgeable enough about Judaism. My Hillel community didn’t seem too concerned, so I ran and I won! The event I most look forward to is the monthly Shabbat service at the Temple of the High Country in Boone. I wasn’t raised going to temple and I didn’t have a bat mitzvah, but every time I go to Shabbat, I become more confident in my Judaism. I’ve been able to get to know many other Jewish students and community members at the Temple. These connections to the greater Jewish community have made me feel at home, and Hillel has given that to me. I really like what Hillel stands for and I hope to continue to strengthen our community.

Jewish Life at UNC Chapel Hill Jewish life at Carolina is vibrant and thriving. A talented student board, supported by three fulltime professional program staff members, plans a variety of programs, social events and résumébuilding leadership opportunities each semester. From holiday parties to hamentaschen baking to the meaningful “Ask Big Questions” conversation series, Jewish Tar Heels can explore their values and identities in their own unique ways through UNC Hillel. Along the way, they find a home on campus, form lifelong friendships and build a strong and impactful community.
A highlight of the year is Shabbat in the Pit, followed by dinner in the Student Union, both iconic locations on Carolina’s campus.
Students enjoyed a talk and discussion with Yavilah McCoy, Jew of color and master educator, cohosted by UNC Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and UNC Black Student Movement.
At the end of the fall semester, students celebrated Chanukah as part of UNC Hillel’s “Late Nights” during exam week.

Hillel has given me a big Jewish community with a lot of Jewish friends, which is something I never had before. Growing up in a small town with a Jewish mother and Catholic father, even though I was raised Jewish, I never had a lot of Jewish friends. While looking at colleges, I didn’t really think about Jewish life on campus. I chose a school that I liked and didn’t really think about the Jewish community. I worked to restart the Hillel there, which was a very fulfilling experience, but for many reasons, I transferred to UNC. I came here my junior year and immediately got involved in Hillel. Before I knew it, I was on the board, working at Hillel’s front desk, joining SRL (Carolina’s Jewish sorority) and going to Shabbat dinners. I think that’s what’s special about Hillel here; the staff is welcoming and nice and there is something for everyone, whether that is cooking for Shabbat, planning events, Torah study or just hanging out with Jewish friends. UNC Hillel has given me a warm Jewish community and I am thankful to give back.
Jewish Life across North Carolina Our statewide campuses engaged in a variety of programs ranging from hosting Holocaust survivors, joining with local congregations for Shabbat potlucks, celebrating Jewish holidays on campus and doing service projects in their local communities. Students from across North Carolina also have the opportunity to attend Statewide Shabbat each semester, the Statewide Leadership Retreat and NC Hillel-sponsored Birthright Israel trips. With NC Hillel staff now located at NC State, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro and Guilford College Hillels, activities have increased in number and student engagement has deepened significantly.
Students at NC State participated in an Interfaith Shabbat with members of many campus religious groups.
App State students enjoy monthly Shabbat services and dinners with Temple of the High Country congregants.
UNC Greensboro students hosted Israel trivia, a Bamba vs. Bissli snack vote, and represented Israel at International Fest.
MY STORY | Calvin Newman NC State University ‘19 Chapel Hill, NC
I remember the day I came to campus as a freshman, worried about leaving behind all of my friends. I was so excited when I got involved in Hillel and realized I automatically had a family away from home. Without Hillel I would find it very hard to keep in touch with my Judaism while at college. I’m very fortunate to be able to have a group of friends who always enjoy celebrating the holidays and exploring our Judaism like I do. It’s also great to have a like-minded community of students who all share a passion for Judaism. Hillel board members are dedicated and always putting on great events. There are so many ways to get involved and connected to Judaism through Hillel, including planning Shabbat, leading Friday night services or baking challah with friends. I am so pleased with how Hillel at State has grown and I am incredibly excited for what the future holds for our thriving Jewish community.

The Birthright Israel Journey Every year, 80-120 students from across the state visit Israel on a free, unforgettable, North Carolina Hillel-led Birthright Israel trip. Students spend ten days on this incredible journey, accompanied by eight Israeli peers and outstanding NC Hillel staff. For many students, this is their first trip to Israel. After touring Jerusalem’s Old City, floating in the Dead Sea, hiking the Golan Heights, seeing the sunrise at Masada, exploring Tel Aviv and more, students return to North Carolina with new Jewish friends, a deeper connection to the Jewish people, a meaningful relationship with Israel, and newfound eagerness to explore their Jewish identity. NC Hillel also offers a week-long extension program after every Birthright trip, in which students enjoy Tel Aviv, the region’s most cosmopolitan city, while also volunteering with refugees. This is a memorable experience and provides students with an invaluable perspective on Israel’s complexities.
Riding camels in the Negev desert is one of the highlights of every trip.
Students spend time with Israelis their age who are currently serving in the IDF.
Post-Birthright extension participants volunteer with refugees in south Tel Aviv.

Birthright Israel was one of the most influential experiences I have ever had. As cliché as that sounds, it could not be more true. When I was leaving for Birthright, I felt nothing but apprehension. As soon as we arrived at our first destination in Israel, all of that disappeared and was replaced with a sense of serendipity and unity. The first thing our tour guide said was, “I don’t want to say welcome to Israel - I want to say welcome back.” This set the tone for the entire trip and opened my heart and mind to a place I can call home. My group was the most accepting, humble, and welcoming group I have ever been a part of. Julie and Itay, our Hillel staff for the trip, made sure we felt comfortable and that we gained valuable knowledge every day. When the time came for us to go home, none of us wanted to leave the beautiful country we felt so deeply connected to. If I could say one thing about Birthright, it would be that it is a MUST! Everything about it helped me truly become who I have always wanted to be, and I will always have those memories to cherish.

Connecting to Israel on Campus North Carolina Hillel students are committed to exploring their relationships with Israel even when they’re not traveling on Birthright Israel trips or returning for internships or study abroad. Hillel facilitates conversations about Israel, brings speakers to educate students and celebrates Israel’s many accomplishments and contributions to the world. Itay Asaf returned for his second year as NC Hillel’s fourth Israel Fellow through a partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel. Itay connected with students across the state, acting as a peer ambassador and serving as a resource for campus conversations about Israel. As a sports enthusiast and former basketball coach, Itay also enjoyed leading three teams of students to compete in the National Hillel Basketball Tournament, and he hosted weekly classes to teach students krav maga, the Israeli martial art.
Students met with David Makovsky and Ghaith Al-Omari, experts on the IsraeliPalestinian conflict.
IsraelFest at UNC featured a collaborative art project, among other opportunities.
Israel Fellow Itay Asaf led a Krav Maga class for students at NC State.
MY STORY | Sifron Benjamin UNC Chapel Hill ‘17 Apex, NC
As a first-year student, I got involved with IsraelFest, an event that showcases Israeli culture to thousands of Carolina students in the heart of campus. That experience led me to go on Birthright Israel that summer. After Birthright, I felt really connected to Israel, so I wanted to advocate for Israel and do more to share my love for the country on campus. I became one of the chairs for IsraelFest last year, and became even more involved in Israel education and pro-Israel advocacy with groups such as Hillel’s Israel Committee, Heels for Israel and AIPAC, including attending AIPAC’s annual policy conference in Washington, D.C. I became involved because I wanted to educate students at UNC about the conflict, because I felt that there was a lack of understanding on campus. In the future, I hope to continue to bring both Israeli culture and politics together and allow students to appreciate Israel as a whole.

Statewide Leadership Retreat A highlight of the year for many students was the annual Statewide Leadership retreat, held in February at American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro. This overnight retreat empowers student leaders, offering them an opportunity to plan Hillel programming for the upcoming year, learn from NC Hillel professionals and guest instructors, grow as campus leaders, and build invaluable connections to students on other campuses in the NC Hillel network. UNC student leader, Sam Pompeo reflected, “I not only learned how to be the best board member possible, but I also made a lot of new Jewish friends!”
National Hillel Basketball Tournament NC Hillel Israel Fellow Itay Asaf led three teams of students to compete in the National Hillel Basketball Tournament at the University of Maryland after several months of training. The two men’s teams and one women’s team, which included students from both Carolina and NC State, represented the Old North State admirably. Teams from 35 different Hillels across the country competed in the weekend-long tournament, which was kicked off by a Shabbat dinner, which University of Maryland Hillel hosted for more than 600 guests.

Hillel at UNCG is like a family to me. The people really make it great. If I’m having a bad day or I just need someone to talk to, I know that I will always have a safe and welcoming space at Hillel. The small Jewish community is so tight-knit that we often have “family” dinners in the cafeteria or other informal hangouts. I grew up with a significant Jewish community, with Shabbat dinners, going to synagogue and Hebrew school every week. But while Judaism is a big part of who I am, it wasn’t necessarily a big factor when I was thinking about colleges. Since Judaism is such a huge part of my identity, and my sister was serving on the UNCG Hillel board, she encouraged me to come to Hillel and I immediately became involved with Jewish life at UNCG. Since my first event, I’ve been coming to everything. I became the engagement chair as a first-year and I hope to be president soon. I know that the thriving Jewish community at UNCG will continue to grow and I hope to play a part in shaping it.

Tobee Kaplan z”l (1933-2016)
Tobee Kaplan was an amazing woman, with great vision and boundless compassion. She exuded genuine warmth and humility, and with a twinkle in her eye, she was always eager to listen and delighted to learn about Hillel’s efforts and celebrate our successes. We will miss her friendship, her leadership and her wonderful smile. Together with her late husband, Leonard (z”l), Tobee had a profound appreciation of and commitment to Hillel, both locally and internationally. Their bold leadership and remarkable support played a critical role in the growth of NC Hillel, as our most generous supporters for decades. Without them, NC Hillel would be a shadow of what we are today. We offer our condolences to Tobee’s children, Randall and Kathy, Lyn and Barry, and Scott and Maeve, and the whole Kaplan family.
