A YEAR OF
HEART & STRENGTH Dear Friends,
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Last fall, as Hurricane Florence approached North Carolina during the first month of school, Hillel staff immediately took action. They contacted hundreds of Jewish students to ensure each one was in a safe place. That week exemplified the Jewish values of North Carolina Hillel, the commitment of our exceptional staff, and the strength of our students. This was the first of many challenges we faced in 2018-2019. In addition to two hurricanes, there were anti-Semitic incidents on several NC campuses, the horrific shootings in Pittsburgh and Poway, as well as a shooting at UNC-Charlotte. And yet, our students continued to show their Jewish pride and stand up for each other. In fact, their love and passion for Judaism only grew stronger. At UNC-Chapel Hill, 82 students have already graduated from the Jewish Learning Fellowship since spring of 2018. At NC State, a record 153 students connected with Hillel, including attending a student-led Seder based on gratitude. At UNC-Charlotte, our students responded to world events by uniting with other groups for Shabbat and interfaith services. At UNC-Greensboro, the university recognized our students' work, naming Hillel a Student Group of Excellence. And at Appalachian State, where our students planned "2 Days Against Hate," a campus-wide program involving hundreds of students, the university celebrated our student leaders with the Student Organization Leadership Award. In this report, our incredible students share their stories. Their Jewish experiences and lifelong memories are thanks to you. We are deeply grateful for your generous support and hope you share our nachas. Together, we are helping students make enduring commitments to Jewish life and delivering North Carolina's Jewish future.
3 QUESTIONS: 3 What makes Hillel home? Our students describe their personal journeys and what Hillel means to them.
5 How does Hillel help you express your Jewish pride? Our students explain how they fight anti-Semitism and speak for truth.
7 What happens when you go to Israel with Hillel? Our students share how Hillel's Israel programs changed their lives.
GRATITUDE 9 We thank the individuals and organizations who help steward the Jewish future.
With gratitude,
Peter Levinson Chair, Board of Directors

KOBE FRIEDMAN NC STATE '20
"After transferring to NC State, I struggled to find my place on campus. Now I spend all my time at Hillel. Any time a student walks in, we ask each other how we’re doing. There’s always someone to talk to. Even if we’re working silently, it’s a place to be together." SHAYNA FARRIS UNC-CHARLOTTE '21

"My high school had three other Jews, one of them being my brother. Through Hillel, I was able to meet so many people like me. I can’t express how good it feels to be connected to Jewish culture, religion, and friends. Jamie, our Hillel director, has the warmest heart! I have never felt more welcomed in my life, even not knowing much about the religious aspect of being Jewish. Hillel helped me find the missing pieces of my Jewish identity."
SAMANTHA SAVAGE UNC-CHAPEL HILL '21
"This year, I had the opportunity to be a Shabbat Intern—meaning that I planned Shabbat every week. Though the internship, I gained the mentorship of Rabbi Melissa, which changed my college experience. I also learned the value in being present. In college, it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of classes, schoolwork, and thinking about the future; but Shabbat has served as a weekly reminder to be fully immersed in the moment and to enjoy good company."
ELIJAH SCHULMAN UNC-CHAPEL HILL '21 "JLF is what brought me to Hillel. Without it, I wouldn’t know a lot of the people I'm friends with now. I probably wouldn’t be going on Birthright. JLF helped me see the world in different ways and allowed me to consider questions through a Jewish lens. This experience furthered the kind of relationship I want to have with Judaism."
JEWISH LEARNING FELLOWSHIP
JINGJING JACOBSON UNC-CHAPEL HILL '20 "Our rabbi wasn’t afraid to discuss why a piece of Torah was problematic. JLF helped me understand acknowledging those parts of the Torah doesn’t mean you’re a bad Jew and doesn’t mean you can’t learn important lessons from it."

"Through Hillel, I developed my Jewish values and identity. This year, after a swastika appeared on campus, I helped organize our first 'Two Days Against Hate' program, bringing students together against hate and antiSemitism. We also helped bring a Holocaust survivor to campus, attracting hundreds of students and faculty. At the end of the year, App State recognized our work by giving us the Student Organization Leadership Award."

"I’ve always considered myself an introvert, but when I found Hillel, something changed. I’m running around, talking to everybody. It’s like my safe zone. Now, I sit on the Intercultural Leadership Council through UNCG's Office of Engagement. Without Hillel, I never would have taken on a campus leadership role. I was very excited at the end of the year when the university recognized our hard work by naming us a Student Group of Excellence."
"Coming to ECU with a small Jewish presence did make me nervous. But being on Hillel board has opened up so many great opportunities and connections I never thought I would have. Hillel really helped me define my Jewish identity as well as assist others to explore theirs. The most meaningful program I was a part of with Hillel was the vigil we hosted for the victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue. This was such a pivotal point in my college career as I came up front and center and declared that I am a proud Jew to the entire ECU and greater Greenville community."

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GO TO ISRAEL WITH HILLEL? TORRIE EPSTEIN UNC-GREENSBORO '21 “I’m not the most religious person, but with Hillel I’m still able to feel connected to my Jewish roots. Being from one of the few Jewish families in my hometown, it feels awesome to have a conversation with someone and not have to stop and explain some Jewish thing. If it wasn’t for Hillel, I wouldn’t have gone on my Birthright Israel trip (which I did with NC Hillel). They really helped me during the application process and answered my questions. It inspired me to become the Birthright Israel Recruitment Intern at UNCG. I just want other Jewish students to have that amazing experience I did."

The extension allowed us to dig deeper and really get to know the country. SAGE ALBERT UNC-CHAPEL HILL '22
"On the extension trip, we experienced Tel Aviv's history and gained a deeper understanding of Israel. We volunteered at a youth center, learned about refugees and asylum seekers coming to Israel, saw their conditions firsthand, and met with Israeli Hillel students at Tel Aviv University. While Birthright showed us all the sights and beauty of Israel, we all agreed that the extension allowed us to dig deeper and really get to know the country. The time we spent on the extension opened our eyes to true stories in Israel and taught us so much about the day-to-day lives of people living here."

WE WORK TO ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT WHO IDENTIFIES AS JEWISH HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THIS COMMUNITY AND FEELS AT HOME WHEN THEY DO.
THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS, ALUMNI, AND FRIENDS WHO INVEST IN OUR JEWISH FUTURE!
WHY DO YOU GIVE?
"I grew up in Greensboro and always felt different because I was Jewish. That was hard, but it made me more appreciative of, and committed to, Jewish life. I believe it's so important to support our Jewish students here in North Carolina. Our public universities have small Jewish populations, and I know what it feels like to be a stranger in a strange land. NC Hillel offers students a place to be with other Jews, to light Shabbat candles, to learn to advocate for Israel and fight anti-Semitism. For our students, NC Hillel is a Jewish family at school. NC Hillel’s professional leadership is incredible, starting at the very top, and has earned my total trust. Today I live in Charlotte, and I love our Jewish community. Most of our public university students stay in North Carolina after graduating. My support for NC Hillel helps ensure Jewish students will lead Jewish lives. They are the ones who will become tomorrow’s community leaders, ensuring a Jewish future for our state." STACY GORELICK CHARLOTTE, NC 13 | www.nchillel.org

CARTER MCCORMICK UNC-CHAPEL HILL '15
"My first year, I remember going to a First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH) event at a pizza place on Franklin. That’s where I met my best friend and a bunch of people who I’m still in touch with today. This summer, I’m going to a friend’s wedding who I met at that FYSH event! When I think about UNC Hillel, I think about hanging out in front of the fireplace and constantly talking to friends. Or sitting in Michelle’s office (she's our Campus Director) and talking to her about my life. Campus could be hectic, and Hillel was an opportunity to remove myself from the craziness and be in a warm, welcoming place. I give back to Hillel because it gave us so much when we were students. If you went to Shabbat dinner, if you went on Birthright, if you had any touch point with the Jewish community, Hillel was behind it. We had these experiences and this support system because of the generosity of the people who came before us. We need to make sure future generations have these experiences too."
PATTY WILD MOM OF ANNA, NC STATE '21
"Hillel at NC State has given my daughter, Anna, a place to feel at home. She found her people and knows she can always be herself. Her closest friendships and most meaningful college experiences, happened because of Hillel. NC State is a huge campus, so I feel better knowing that the Hillel staff, building, and community is there for her. The financial support of parents and donors makes all of this possible for Anna and every other Jewish student."
