ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018
Dear Friends, We are thrilled to share that in 2017-2018, North Carolina Hillel reached more Jewish students than ever. The growing number of Jewish students on campuses across North Carolina have diverse needs and backgrounds, and led by our dedicated professional staff across the state, we have created warm Jewish communities to welcome each one.
We fostered enormous growth at NC State as a result of our new Hillel Center in the heart of of Hillsborough Street. Julie Harris, Assistant Director at NC State, catalyzed community—welcoming 147 students, a 50% increase from last year and 183% increase since we first added staff at State in 2014. At UNC-Charlotte, we engaged more students than ever before. Students having High-Impact experiences increased 28% from last year, and almost four-fold since we first hired UNCC staff. UNC-Greensboro sent eight students on our winter Birthright Israel trip, double the number of students from their previous high. Our new Senior Jewish Educator, Rabbi Melissa B. Simon, launched an incredibly popular Jewish Learning Fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill. Demand was so high that she and Associate Director Michelle Brownstein Horowitz ran two parallel groups, with 28 students taking the ten-week course, driving a 32% increase in students with High-Impact experiences at Carolina (from 114 to 150). Statewide, we brought 83 students to Israel on Birthright Israel and connected 28 students with summer internships around the country. Every day, our staff is meeting with students, showing young adults how Judaism can be a meaningful part of their lives, and developing future Jewish leaders. In 2017-2018, our staff introduced 986 Jewish students to Jewish life on our campuses. These students are enjoying and leading Shabbat services, learning about Israeli culture through our Israel Fellow, and making lifelong friends. We are building communities that are enriching and inclusive. Our staff who mentor and support our students are the Jewish hearts of our campuses. We’re grateful for the many parents, alumni, and friends whose generous support is truly humbling. We invite you to join us again this year in supporting Hillel’s mission and inspiring Jewish students across North Carolina. Thank you for being our partners in delivering the Jewish future. With gratitude,
Adam Goldstein Chair, Board of Directors

ISRAEL
NC Hillel is one of 100 Hillels that brings an Israel Fellow to campus. The Israel Fellow is an Israeli peer ambassador who creates an authentic connection between our students and the Jewish state. Ran Laviv, the NC Hillel Israel Fellow from 2016 to 2018, built relationships with students across the state and spearheaded trips to Washington D.C., during which students met with policymakers to examine the politics of the Middle East. In the summer of 2018, we were thrilled to welcome Yarden Levy, our 6th Israel Fellow. The Israel Fellow deepens students’ knowledge of Israel and serves as a resource to understand the country's complexities. The Israel Fellow also plays a lead role in recruiting students for our semiannual Birthright Israel and Birthright Extension programs as well as Onward Israel. Through Onward Israel, students intern at Israeli nonprofits and companies.

UNC-Chapel Hill's first Jewish Learning Fellowship graduation.
RABBI ON CAMPUS In the summer of 2017, we welcomed Senior Jewish Educator Rabbi Melissa B. Simon to UNC-Chapel Hill to ignite our students’ love for Jewish learning. She has already revitalized our alternative spring break program, helped launch the hugely popular Jewish Learning Fellowship program, and enriched our holiday celebrations. The student response to Rabbi Melissa’s work has been phenomenal. In its first semester, 28 students graduated from the Jewish Learning Fellowship, a 10-week experiential, conversational seminar for students looking to deepen their understanding of Judaism on their own terms. JLF classes will continue next year, with four cohorts studying compelling Jewish subjects.

MEET OUR STUDENTS I would not be the person I am today without Hillel. I was one of those first-year students who ran far away from Hillel. I had attended the American Hebrew Academy for high school and I needed a break. But the summer after my first year of college I met two NC State students, both involved with Hillel, and I realized what I had been missing out on. They were everything I hoped to be as a college student. I knew I needed to get more involved with NC State’s Hillel. The next year, I began spending 10-15 hours per week with Hillel friends, and applied to be on the Julia Sagerdahl board. I started as Programming Chair and was encouraged to run for NC State ‘18 President my junior year. Hillel has pushed me past every expectation I from Greensboro, NC previously had for myself, and I would not be the person I am today without it. From the incredible staff who believe in me far more than I believe in myself, to the peers who help me unwind after a stressful week, I cannot thank this organization enough. Getting involved with Hillel was the best decision I made in college.
I was the only Jewish kid at my high school. Entering college, I was pretty nervous and scared, but I was also ready to explore my interests, including Judaism. I was not very knowledgeable about my religion growing up and I felt like that really affected me. I was eager to learn more about being Jewish, but I was also insecure about how little background I had. I remember my first Hillel event. It was Shabbat and I was extremely nervous. I had never been around other Jews and until that day I felt very alone. I was UNC-Charlotte ‘20 the only Jewish kid at my high school. Yet at that Shabbat dinner, all those from Celmmons, NC thoughts of loneliness disappeared. I immediately connected with the people in the room. Since then, I have been dedicated to making sure that other students are aware of Hillel because I want students like me to know that there are other people who share their beliefs and practice. Today, I can confidently say that Hillel has given me a community and has made the start of my adulthood much less scary.

Hillel is the hub of my Jewish identity.
Ariel Freedman UNC-Chapel Hill '20 from Winston-Salem, NC
Growing up, I actively participated in the Winston-Salem Jewish community and before coming to UNC, I worried that I would lose that sense of Jewish community that I loved so much. This fear quickly subsided when I walked into Hillel for the annual “Welcome Back Shabbat.” The warm and friendly vibe that Hillel provides to new students is something that I believe no other organization is able to do. The first week can be a scary thing, but it is nice to know that there’s a place where everyone can immediately feel at home. Since then, I’ve become very involved in Jewish life at UNC. Whether it’s hanging out at Shabbat dinners, working the front desk, or going on Birthright, Hillel is the hub of my Jewish identity.
Hillel makes space for everybody. I grew up in a small North Carolina town called Eden. Before coming to Hillel, I had never been in a space where there were Jews my age. I first got involved during my sophomore year. I was in the early process of converting, and it was lonely without having a community. Hillel was the first outlet for me to be Jewish and not to be alone. Hillel is very open - it’s not interested in an over-arching agenda to make you think or feel a certain way. Hillel makes space for everybody. Justin Stewart We’re a family. Hillel staff is there when I need advice or if I just want to talk. I went on Birthright with NC Hillel in May. It was an incredible experience because UNC-Greensboro ‘19 I was able to meet so many people, Israelis and Americans. Our shared identity as from Eden, NC Jews bonded us in a way that I’ll never forget.
I have gained a second family of Jewish friends.
Aliyah Tuckman Appalachian State ‘20 from Charlotte, NC
Getting involved in leadership at App State Hillel has been a blessing. Hillel has given me the opportunity to explore what being a Jewish young adult means to me and how I can express my Jewish identity in daily life. By gaining leadership roles at Hillel, I have gained a second family of Jewish friends with whom I celebrate the holidays, enjoy Shabbat dinner, and have fun. Hillel has also given me the opportunity to learn more about my connection to Israel. I participated in the Bridge to Israel program and talked to professionals in D.C. who affect Israeli policy. Afterwards, I became more excited about traveling to Israel with my Hillel family on the NC Hillel Birthright trip.

JODIE SINGER UNC-CHAPEL HILL '13 "Hillel was my go-to place on campus. It's where I met with friends, enjoyed Shabbat, studied for exams, and grew as a leader. But what do I love most about Hillel? Hillel allowed us to help shape our community. I love that there were so many options: volunteering, exploring Judaism, building friendships, and more—and that each person could choose what worked for them. "No matter what students come looking for at Hillel, it is impossible to predict the connections that they'll make or the impact that Hillel will have down the line. For example, my Hillel involvement put me on the path that I’m on today, working in the Jewish world. I cannot imagine that I would be where I am now if I had never walked through Hillel's doors."
