We have talked for the last few years about doing our own version of it, an homage to them if you will, and decided to give it a try this semester. “It was on that day that I made my biggest mistake. I swiped over the tab and turned it off. Now I hate the color green. Read receipts ruined my relationship,” Luke Mikhail, 19, said remorsefully.

True love is hard to come by in the digital age.

Can social media be to blame for this generation’s lack of connection? Sophomore college students at Normandale Community College, things had been running smoothly for Luke and his former girlfriend, Rachel. From the day they went exclusive, not a step was skipped to prove the relationship was thriving.

After becoming Facebook official, the two love birds sent “Good Morning <3” and “Goodnight :*” texts on a daily basis, as well as a midday phone call to catch up. Profile pictures were updated, featuring the two of them hanging onto each other in unaware love-struck oblivion at a party; captioned, “My better half ”. Back and forth tweets, proclaiming to all of Twitter, “I’m so glad I fell in love with my best friend #foreverandalways #realdeal” let the world know of their success.

The road started getting bumpy for Rachel and Luke; honeymoon phase was officially over. Marty Griffin, a fellow follower on Instagram, gave us the inside scoop on what was showing up in his newsfeed. “They seemed to be doing great. Luke was always Rachel’s #ManCandyMonday. And Rachel was always Luke’s #WomanCrushWednesday. They took screen shots of each other’s text messages and posted them up. I’m astonished that it didn’t work out. It really is a shame.”

Instagram pictures of roses, lip-lock shots, and their dinner at the Olive Garden still could not salvage the underlying problem Luke and Rachel faced. Luke changed his profile picture back to a shirtless selfie on a beach in Sarasota, Florida during Spring Break 2013.

Rachel noticed he set his Twitter on private and gained 5 new female followers. 3 of them liked his shirtless profile picture also. In rage, Rachel posted some fairly ruthless subtweets. To make matters worse, Luke did not notice these subtweets and continued to retweet current sports updates. Communication was failing.

Drastic times call for drastic measures. So who is to blame?

Looking for love elsewhere, Luke downloaded Tinder and Hot or Not. After using these apps for a week or so, he began to gain back some confidence.

His dating game refueled, he decided it was time to have a face-to-face conversation with Rachel. Daringly, he made the call and offered to meet her at the nearest Caribou. Oreo Snowdrifts are her favorite. Anyone who follows her on Instagram or Tumbler knows this.

From skimming Rachel’s Pinterest board, Luke learned that her favorite flowers were lilies. He showed up to Caribou with his dignity and a fresh bouquet in his hand.

“I swiped the tab. I turned off Read Receipts. If I could take it all back, I would,” Luke vents about the process. “It was a week before finals. I couldn’t respond back fast enough after I read her messages. I was just trying to alleviate the situation. But everything just escalated.”

Things went downhill when Rachel kept her Read Receipts on, but did not respond back. Luke began seeing that Rachel indeed read his texts, but did not reply. “I’d ask her to tag me in a photo, and she wouldn’t do it. But I know she saw my texts. Our communication issues were getting out of hand,” said Luke.

Rachel sat down to talk with us about how the face-to-face coffee date went.

Amanda: “What were you feeling at that moment when Luke walked into the coffee shop?”

Rachel: “Luke and I were out of our element. I felt awkward. For both of us.” AL: “Was there a turning point in the conversation?”

EJ: “Luke admitted to cheating on me. He had been using dating apps behind my back and was chatting at least 7 girls he matched with. They were all added on his Snapchat. I could see the notifications on his phone. He should’ve blocked the pop-ups.”

AL: “I’m sorry to hear that. May I ask who his 3 Best Friends on Snapchat are currently?”

EJ: “It’s lovergirl_13, beachbunny9, and blondebombshell. I wasn’t even the last Best Friend. Can you believe it? It was time for us to be done. Game over. I have no regrets.”

EJ: “Make a playlist, post some cute selfies, and go out with your friends. But don’t forget to document everything. If you didn’t take a picture at that party with those hot frat boys, did it really happen?”

unfollowed him on Twitter, Instagram, and blocked him on Snapchat. She deleted him from Facebook, as well as all of their couple shots. She even untagged herself from any picture or status that he was present in. Cutting off all ties, it was like the relationship never existed. Turns out 140 characters was not enough space to continue this love affair.

Since Luke was ignoring all of Rachel’s subtweets, the only other option was to disconnect. Rachel

Police Blotter: Duel Ends in Brawl: Bloomington Police responded to a fight on the 9700 block of France Ave. When officers arrived on scene to the upper level of the Kopp Student Center at Normandale Community College they observed approximately 10-12 males 18-22 years old “engaged in a serious physical altercation amongst themselves” according to a news release from the department.

The brawl allegedly transpired after words were exchanged in the duration of a heated Pokémon duel between two rival groups of “poké masters.” Police are withholding certain information vital to the investigation at this time but Bloomington Police spokesman, Billy Club, did admit “we are hitting certain roadblocks in attempting to decipher exactly what happened due to the underground Pokémon scene’s ‘mafia-like’ code of silence.”

The city prosecutor says more information will be available next week when charges ranging from aggravated assault for the benefit of a gang to weapons possession will be handed down. Two assailants suffered minor stab wounds as well as blunt force trauma to the head and were subsequently transported to Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina where they received treatment.

PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE: The Japanese Garden on the rear-side wing of the school has been closed until further notice. Multiple sightings of an unidentified creature in the Koi pond have been reported and until the risk can be assessed fully by animal control experts; students, staff and visitors are asked to keep distance from the premises out of concern for safety.

“Glitter Bomber” Strikes Again.

For the 4th time this semester a report has been made alleging a masked man of pouring liquid adhesive and copious amounts of glitter on an individual walking alone on the east side of campus before fleeing. The case has been handed over to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. Anyone with information is urged to contact their local authorities.

StarID Data Breach.

Students and faculty alike have reported inability in logging on to their Star ID accounts in recent weeks. Additionally on a widespread level, students have been claiming to have single pages missing from completed papers or homework assignments submitted through their drop box and are having difficulties receiving classroom announcements due to multiple hyper-links being embedded in text linking them to, as one frustrated student put it, “stupid cat videos on YouTube.” The IT department at Normandale released a statement late Tuesday evening: “On behalf of all system administrators here at Normandale, we would like to issue an apology to the faculty and entire student body. The issues being reported are unprecedented at this level, but we are working around the clock to resolve the situation and ensure no future cyber attacks possible. We thank you for your cooperation and encourage anyone experiencing difficulty with their account to come fill out an official report in the 3rd floor computer lab.”

Gorillas in Our Midst Normandale Community College (NCC) recently made waves in the Minnesota State Colleges and University (MnSCU) System when they announced the unveiling of the Associated Primate Education System (APES) in partnership with Como Zoo last fall. This program mirrors an existing partnership involving students studying with the gorillas in their zoo habitat.

Program Director, Dr. H. Sapien, says “the program allows gorillas to have the chance to study among their more evolutionarily-advanced counterparts while enjoying the ‘college-experience.’”

The APES program seeks to provide the gorillas the opportunity to learn in the same way as human students while doing everything that people do. APES begins the primates’ day with a bus ride from Como Zoo to the campus via the Metro Transit system.

When asked about his involvement on campus, Yetti says “it’s been a positive experience overall. I really feel like I’ve connected with my human classmates, and I think I’ve made some human friends for life. B. We’ve even considered holding debates on campus between different faith and science groups. While relationships with the human classmates are strained due to our more violent personalities, they really agree that those concussions, broken limbs, and bruises are worth because they believe they are now much better students. My work with the Protest Club has been rewarding and Student Life has awarded a more diversely-stocked salad bar for fellow primates despite the fact that most of the Student Senate, mostly humans I might add, voted either against it or pulled out their neutral vote. If I didn’t value their evolutionary advancements, I’d have bopped them all right there. ” Overall, after a rocky probationary period of an academic year, Professor Sapien has decided that “the APES program has been worth it and the data we are collecting from primates and sapiens alike and their ability to interact on a daily basis is unprecedented.

We are looking forward to learning more about our evolutionary roots through our partnership with the Como Zoo and the enrichment it will provide to both the gorillas and the humans.”

So, primates at Como Zoo, if you are looking for possible ways to earn college credits while still at the CZ Primate School, look no further than the APES Program and apply today. Fellow humans, be sure to welcome your new classmates and remember to duck if you feel like goofing off with your fellow students during your next Physical Anthropology class.

Minority Report: Student Species Awareness

It is no question that the Normandale student population is diverse. With more than 15,000 students, we’ve decided to take a closer look at the differences that make us beautiful.

Citizens are becoming more and more outspoken about their species, these days. Hiding is in the past. Reptilian citizens are shedding their skin and revealing their true identity. Androids are also outing their engineers and recycling their shame into mechanical pride.

Many reptilian students are choosing to wear their natural lizard skin to class in place of their human facade. They are free from the fear of scaring other students, but some still decide to disguise themselves as a form of self expression. Android students are designed to look human, but some robot students have overwritten their software for discretion. It’s becoming more common to see them recharging at outlets. In fact, Normandale faculty will be meeting shortly to discuss the addition of a recharging dock in the cafeteria to meet the unique needs of robot students.

The Loins’ Roar is interested in finding out more about greater aspects of the diversity in the student body and asks the hard question. What are you?

Protest Club:

You may remember this club from their “petition to ban pants on campus,” with which, they tried to take away your right to wear pants claiming, “They are restricting student’s freedom of leg movement.”

Meeting times vary because they are against organized scheduling, but somehow they are able to keep attendance at an impressive twenty members per meeting and run more functions than any other club. They are hard to miss when they are huddled behind rope with poster-board signs. “We’re always ready to take your side on any issue. If you’re feeling repressed, oppressed, obsessed, by or about anything, we’re here to support and represent your cause.” Said Regina Rage, club president and psychology major. She went on to comment: “Students who will do well in this club: loud people, enthusiastic slogan writers and chanters, people who pace when they are stressed, people who are easily angered, people who like to make signs, anyone who is really really lonely, anyone who has had their driver’s license revoked for road rage, any tall dark and handsome guy with a chivalry complex, girls who cry easily, anyone who is for or against any idea that ends in ‘-ism’, anyone who hasn’t showered.”

According to Rage, campaigns that have been successful in the past were: “Smurf Rights on Campus”, “Carrots are People too”, and “Stop Farting Indoors” (where they demanded a designated ‘gas passing area’.

Which was quickly removed because it was in the way of a hackey sack tournament in the courtyard. ) ** Dr. Reasonableadvice recommends avoiding this club’s activity if you suffer from an anxiety disorder or heart condition.

Slacker Outsourcing: If you’re finding that your eyes were larger than your brain when you enrolled this year, have no worries. This club acts as an agency for under-stimulated, over-achieving students who will gladly do your work for you. The paper you have do on Friday? No sweat.

Slacker Outsourcing will assign it to one of their brainy essayists. They can even have a nerd sent to class as a decoy to take your final exam for you. This club is exclusive and does require you to pay hefty fees to attend.

“There’s no such thing as a free A” said club president Suzie Smarts, two-year business major. “If you want me to take your oral French exam, you’ll have to buy my lunch.”

Student Association for World Domination: If you’re really looking to make it to the top, SAWD wants you. If you long for complete and total power over the entire population of the globe, with SAWD, you can get there. The club is interested in all possibilities to further it’s plans: science, engineering, fine arts, nutrition. They are open to any and all malicious tactics of deception and manipulation that will lull the general public under their command. In order to further their plans to take over the world, they request courageous, dedicated, detail oriented members who do not take no for an answer. “We’re committed to being the leaders of our generation,” says Gustav King, club president and political science major, “the only agenda that we haven’t discussed is who will be in charge when we succeed.” ( Lion’s Roar reporter, Karlynn O’Neil abruptly ended the interview after King started laughing maniacally, by running away.)

Understanding O.P.D Passionate Parker Plans Parking Perfection Peter Parker has 99 problems and all of them have to do with parking. For many Normandale students, finding an ideal parking spot is a tough feat.

Front row spots, or any spots in the main lot for that matter, are almost impossible to come upon during prime time (9 am - 1 pm). Such an achievement requires patience, observation, and skillful maneuvering.

Parker is a dedicated student at Normandale Community College, but his dedication exceeds the books. His passion for nabbing the closest parking spot available deserves recognition.

It all began when he was late for his first college class last fall semester.

“I live 5 minutes away from school. I thought leaving my house 30 minutes early would be efficient.

But boy, was I wrong,” Parker reminisces. “I showed up to my Psychology class 20 minutes late. It was the ultimate embarrassment.”

After this mishap, Parker is determined to arrive to every class on time, as well as winning the best parking spot available.

“I usually wake up at 5 am every day if I’m not working, grab that $1 large coffee from McDonald’s, and post myself in the front row.”

Parker uses multiple techniques and steps for optimal performance: “I set a couple alarms, including my clock, watch, and phone. You can never be too careful. I take the side roads to avoid traffic. Sometimes the school buses get in the way. But some days, I oversleep. That’s when it gets real.”

To all students parked in the front half of the lot, Parker has one thing to say: “I will find you, and I will take your spot.”

You can find Parker circling near the front entrance. With keen observation, he can identify the front lot students to the back lot students.

“Typically the Sophomore girls with their hair curled found the ideal spot. She will most likely be wearing a Northface, stylish but an unwise choice of apparel during a snowstorm. These girls cannot afford being out in the elements for long.”

Some complain that Parker is excessive in his pursuits.

“Once he followed me for 20 minutes when I couldn’t find my car. He rolled down the window and yelled at me to ‘get it together’. I informed security,” said a fellow student.

Some may say Parker should concentrate more on his studies than finding that magic parking place, but he proves them wrong.

“I have a hotspot on my laptop. I can to all my online class inside the comfort of my car, even take naps. It’s a win-win situation.”

I sat down with Psychology professor Michelle Cramer, who explained Parker’s uncanny condition.

Amanda: “Is there a reason for Parker’s behavior?”

Michelle: “After running thorough tests, I can only come to the conclusion that Parker suffers from O.P.D.” AL: “What exactly is O.P.D?” MC: “Obsessive Parking Disorder. It’s very rare. 1 out of every 1,700 college students suffer from O.P.D. Parker has experienced all of the symptoms. Sweaty palms, jittery hands, mild headaches, lead foot, and road rage.”

AL: “Is there any hope of Parker overcoming this disorder?”

MC: “Unfortunately there is no pharmaceutical assistance available for Parker. I recommended some great therapy classes that have proved to lower the parking urge. Time will tell.”

When the Lions’ Roar Student Voice decided to host its First place goes to Tom Keller for the only photofirst annual photo contest, we never thought the entries graph that you could almost make out what the artist would be so...unique. The “styles” used are as varied as was trying to take a photo of. Yep, this is the best of the “artists” who took them. Out of all of the entries what we got. Congrats? we received, these were the best. No, seriously, this is it. I know, right? Well, here you go; the 2014 Lions’ Roar Amateur Photo Contest winners.

Second place goes to Sarah Pullock for her photograph of...well honestly we don’t actually know what she was taking a photograph of, but it was at least partially clear in some areas, so she gets the second prize.

Lastly, our third place award goes to John Walkinson for...whatever this is a picture of. Yep, the rest of the entries were so bad, this monstrosity made it to the top three.

The story of how Amy Shall turned her life around and went from rags to riches.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Due to unforeseen consequences and personal conflicts, the subject of the following article has requested to now, after the story has been submitted, to remain anonymous. Although we here at Lions’ Roar would not usually permit such an act, we have this one time in the interest of fostering a better relationship between the student in question and the school. In fairness to our reporter, who has spent tireless hours tracking down the story, we have chosen to still run the article and just omit any details that we feel would jeopardize the agreement made with the student who the piece was about. We apologize for any confusion that results from this.

While the students of NCC come from varied backgrounds and cultures, Amy is unique in that she is the sole survivor of the (ajdskjalkjdwlkajds) incident of (2008). Many of you may remember the tragedy that befell the (asdkajldjkjs aslsajklasd) and is (200) lost souls; it received and extreme amount of media attention at the time it took place. What many don’t remember is what happened after the incident.

On a cold night in (December, 2008, (Amy) was taken to a foster home to live with (harry and Janine Lewis),, the people who would later adopt her and put her on the path to her future career in (Biochemical weapons). The (Lewis) family was not prepared for the changes that were going to accompany (Amy) in their lives. There were many long nights as they came to adjust to (Amy’s) sudden and often uncontrollable fits of (akjsdjaljksdk), a conditions she still battles with to this day.

was eventually able to learn to work through her fits of (ajsdjaksalkjsda) and eventually begin to experience a more normal life.

Although she struggled with her classes at (Hastings) Sr. High school, she was able to adapt well to NCC’s course schedule and in no time was well on her way towards her degree in (Biological sciences.

According to Amy, “ the hard part was just getting used to the freedom that comes with designing my own course schedule and being able to choose, for the first time in my life, exactly what I wanted to be doing and where I wanted to be going with my life.”

Now, coming towards the end of her last semester at NCC, (Amy has had some time to reflect back on her years and some of the important lessons that she has learned. When asked what advice she would give to knew students at NCC or even to some of the old veterans, she had these inspiring words to share; “ adjalkdjls kdja slkdjaslkdja slkdjaslkdja skldjaslkd jaklsdjakld jklasjdklas jdakls djalksjdl kasjdkl asjdklasjdkla sjdklasjda lkcjklji aslkdja lksdj lasjdlk ada dada adsasd adsad ad adawda asadas ada dasdawd a adawdasdawdad adsadwada asda ad adadwad !”
