A Message From Norwalk Community College emergency aid has been instrumental in helping them navigate challenges such as utility payments, access to Wi-Fi, and even supplying gift cards to alleviate grocery expenses.

Over the past year, we have witnessed remarkable changes as the community colleges across Connecticut have come together, dedicated to providing accessible and quality education for students. What was once known as Norwalk Community College has now evolved into Connecticut State Community College Norwalk, demonstrating our collective commitment to supporting our students and embracing positive change. Our merger has not only expanded our horizons but given us an opportunity for growth, innovation, and the creation of something truly exceptional.

The graduating class of 2023 consisted of 626 graduates, one of whom was my son.

Together, they earned a remarkable 664 degrees and certificates with an impressive 30% of them completing their degrees with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Throughout their academic journey, our students have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their education in and out of the classroom. Their academic achievements and remarkable ability to adapt, grow, and thrive in a world of constant change are a shining example of the strength and resilience that can be found within our community.

In these times of change and transformation, it is essential to recognize the strength that comes from a tightly knit community, and our community here at Norwalk continues to forge ahead in our vision to support our students throughout their academic and professional journey.

As we embark on this new chapter together, I want to express my deepest gratitude to every one of you for your dedication and unwavering commitment to our campus community. I am excited to witness the remarkable achievements and positive changes we will create at CT State Norwalk.

This commitment is uniquely reflected through a substantial 150% increase in overall campus resources over the past year with our students. Specifically, our food pantry usage has quadrupled, while tutoring services and the Learning Commons have seen a threefold increase in demand. The library's usage has also doubled, and key support services such as Guided Pathways Advising and the Career Center have continued to report a significant increase in usage.

These trends show the growing demand and reliance on the invaluable resources and support systems available to our campus community, reinforcing our commitment to providing accessible and comprehensive assistance to all our students, faculty, and staff.

Additionally, our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion remains steadfast. We engaged in important conversations, listened to one another, and took concrete steps to foster an environment where every voice is heard and valued. In April, CT State Norwalk hosted “The Practice of Democracy: A View from Connecticut,” an interactive exhibition which traveled between Housatonic, Gateway, and finally Norwalk campuses. The exhibit facilitated engaging dialogues within and beyond our campus, shedding light on how justice, equality, and power manifest in our environment through a collection of local history and stories.

Through partnerships with local Norwalk organizations and collaborative campus events, we aimed to create conversations that empowered our students, faculty, and staff to play an active role in shaping our community. Our ongoing collaboration with the Family & Children’s Agency (FCA) highlights our unwavering commitment to addressing our students' needs. Thanks to the dedicated support of an FCA case manager, we have been able to provide essential assistance to over 460 students over the past three years. This

In Partnership With The NCC Foundation An annual report that looks back to the prior year is sometimes hard to reconcile with the forward momentum we embrace at the Norwalk Community College Foundation, always preparing for the year ahead, especially because we are so deeply connected to a college that continues along its own timeline for the very important mission of advancing students onto the next phase of their lives. This fall, however, as we find ourselves firmly planted in the present at the newly consolidated Connecticut State Community College Norwalk, it is both fitting and important that we pause to review the important work of the Foundation during the last official year of Norwalk Community College.

For nearly 60 years the Norwalk Community College Foundation has supported students enrolled at the college because our founders recognized then what is even more true today: no one succeeds alone. Through the unwavering passion and dedication of donors, board members, community partners, and the faculty and staff of the college, the Foundation has assisted thousands of students on their path to academic success and fruitful careers. The real work of the Foundation is connecting the college and its students to those of you who view the equitable education of our community members as an investment in our collective brighter future.

Of course, we also cannot succeed alone. Innovating In Academics: Inspiring Success in STEM The NSF S-STEM program serves as a catalyst for change, not only by financially supporting deserving students from our community but also by fostering an environment conducive to their long-term success in the vital field of engineering. With this remarkable granted program in place, Norwalk Community College solidifies its commitment to fostering the dreams of future engineers and tech workers and will continue to develop of a diverse and skilled STEM workforce that will shape the future of our community.

The Engineering Program at Norwalk Community College was recently awarded a substantial grant of $1 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) S-STEM program. This grant marks a significant milestone for our institution, as it brings with it the promise of transforming the educational landscape for academically talented, low-income students pursuing engineering degrees at NCC. The primary goal of this grant is to reinforce our commitment to making (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) education more accessible, particularly for those who may not have previously had the opportunity to explore these fields. Spanning five years, this project will allocate scholarships to 21 distinguished students who are enrolled at least half-time and actively pursuing associate degrees in engineering science. These scholarships, which can reach up to $10,000 annually, for a maximum of three years, represent a critical stride towards reducing the overall cost of attendance, addressing one of the most formidable barriers to education faced by disadvantaged students.

The NSF S-STEM program itself carries a broader mission, aligning with national goals to leverage diversity to enhance the STEM workforce. It specifically targets academically promising students from low-income backgrounds, acknowledging their potential to contribute significantly to the STEM fields. There are three core objectives of this transformative initiative: to enhance the gender diversity of the applicant pool through the implementation of high-impact outreach strategies; to alleviate the financial hardships students face by providing essential scholarships; and to foster a vibrant community of learners by incorporating evidence-based support services. It recognizes the multifaceted challenges faced by low-income students pursuing STEM degrees and incentivizes curious and talented individuals to not only enroll in engineering programs but persist until graduation, when they either transfer to four-year institutions or enter the workforce. The program design adopts a whole-student approach to student success by offering wraparound services that are instrumental in nurturing a supportive and inclusive community of learners.

NCC Students can pursue STEM, Engineering, and Design projects in the Foundation-funded Makerspace.

NCC Professor and Coordinator of the Engineering Program, Mobin Rastgar Agah, said “This initiative is a great example of our commitment to equitable access to higher education and social mobility for our students, and will help the college develop partnerships with local industries and stakeholders to address the ever-increasing demand for skilled STEM workforce in our region.”

Workforce Development: Increasing Access For Community College Students shared their time, talents, and expertise with the students. Additionally, Synchrony ensured that each participant had access to laptops and all the necessary equipment to perform their job effectively, emphasizing their commitment to providing a meaningful learning experience.

Synchrony Financial’s Winternship Program offered five NCC students a paid, three-week internship during the College’s winter recess last January. This unique opportunity offered a hybrid work experience, with students spending Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in the Synchrony Stamford Hub office and Mondays and Fridays working remotely. The program, designed specifically for first and second-year students with a keen interest in technology and computer science, provided students with a curated agenda that allowed them to work closely with technology experts at Synchrony, offering a glimpse into the real-life experiences in the tech industry. The internship served as a bridge between classroom learning and practical application, enabling students to gain valuable insights into their chosen field.

The core focus of the Winternship Program at Synchrony revolved around meaningful project work, allowing students to immerse themselves in innovative technology designed for web development. One of the noteworthy projects that the students completed was the development of the Skills Academy's website using ReactJS, an open-source JavaScript network. To ensure that the students were well-equipped for this task, Synchrony provided them with training materials on ReactJS and introduced them to the AGILE process. This combination of technical guidance and project management methodologies allowed the students to approach the task with a structured and agile mindset, mirroring the industry's best practices.

In addition to focusing on coding and development, the program encouraged group collaboration and creativity. Working together as a team, students had the opportunity to brainstorm ideas, share insights, and collectively make decisions to bring the Skills Academy's website to life.

The students’ efforts culminated in an exciting opportunity to present their product to the Synchrony team, showcasing their achievements and demonstrating their growth during the Winternship. This hands-on experience not only enhanced their technical skills but also honed their communication and presentation abilities, ensuring that they left the program as skilled technologists and well-rounded professionals. MD Shalauddin, a Foundation Scholarship student who participated in the program, commented, The Synchrony program was invaluable, offering hands-on exposure to real-world challenges in a supportive learning environment. It equipped me with practical skills, fostered meaningful connections, and spurred personal and professional growth. I'm grateful for the opportunity and am now excited to apply these lessons in my current role. I secured a Software Quality Engineer internship, which has become a part-time position, while pursuing my Computer Science bachelor’s degree. Balancing both has been rewarding, and I'm enthusiastic about gaining more practical experience in the field.

The impact of the Winternship will extend far beyond the students who participated. Due to its resounding success at Norwalk Community College, the program will be piloted at other CT State Community College campuses, ensuring that more students across the state have access to this invaluable opportunity. To further bolster the impact of the program, and recognizing the importance of education, Synchrony hosted tech immersion days for computer science professors and career center professionals. These events enabled educators to stay up to date with industry trends and helped career center professionals provide more targeted guidance to students pursuing careers in technology.

The College and the Foundation are grateful for Synchrony's commitment to fostering talent and bridging the gap between education and industry. Building strong relationships with corporate partners and industry leaders like Synchrony will have a lasting impact on our local students who pursue careers in the fields of technology and computer science and will strengthen the technology-related programs across CT State Community College.

NCC Shares Talents and Resources: Hosting the Inaugural Media Madness Conference of songwriting and music production. The "On-Air Performance" workshop, headed by broadcast teacher and WFUT radio personality Matt Zako, honed students' radio and podcasting skills, giving them hands-on experience with microphones and podcast setup.

On a Friday in March, the Norwalk campus buzzed with energy as high school students from across the region convened for the inaugural Media Madness conference. The event, organized by Norwalk Community College Assistant Professor for Film and Television, Julie Casper Roth, in partnership with Maria Naeem, media teacher at Wilton High School, and other faculty at Norwalk High School, provided high school students with a comprehensive introduction to the multifaceted world of media, and the media career opportunities available at NCC.

Lastly, "Learn How to Create Engaging Social Media," led by NCC Professor Mary Jo McGonagle, empowered students to explore the world of social media marketing, encouraging them to develop strategies to create high-quality, entertaining, and informative content while expanding their reach and growing their brand.

Recognizing the high turnout at media day events in central Connecticut high schools, Professor Casper Roth set out to create a more accessible and enriching experience for high school students in Connecticut's southwest region.

The six workshops collectively enriched students' understanding of the diverse media fields, fostering creativity and skill development in the next generation of media professionals.

Professor Casper Roth expressed her excitement stating, "the event helped showcase the cutting-edge media programs we have here at CT State Norwalk while giving students the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the breadth of media fields.”

“This event not only introduced high school students to the vast world of media but also showcased our college as a hub of innovation,” says Professor Casper Roth. “Furthermore, Media Madness served as a testament to the value of community partnerships and relationships in supporting our students' growth and development.”

The conference held a series of engaging workshops led by Norwalk faculty members, alumnus, and community partners. These workshops delved into various aspects of the media landscape, offering students insights into audio production, television production, on-air performance, and the creation of Public Service Announcements (PSAs). The state-of-the-art facilities at NCC’s media studios are funded by the Norwalk Community College Foundation and have been transformed by over $500,000 in recent upgrades and equipment purchases.

The success of Media Madness Day at Norwalk Community College highlights the significant impact educators have in facilitating opportunities for students to explore and harness their passions. By collaborating with local high schools and industry professionals, NCC demonstrated its commitment to providing students with real-world experiences and the skills they need to thrive in their chosen careers and highlighted the incredible resources available at our local community colleges.

In the workshop titled "Creating PSAs," students had the chance to learn the art of crafting impactful public service announcements, guided by Ms. Naeem. Additionally, they gained insights into the Just Drive public service announcement contest hosted by Impact Teen Drivers, an organization dedicated to promoting safe driving habits among young adults which emphasizes the importance of using media as a tool for creating positive social change.

A "Television Sportscasting" workshop offered a behind-the-scenes look at Norwalk Community College’s television production studio and television sportscasting, with the invaluable guidance of CBS 12's Sports Anchor, Justin DeVellis, and technical expertise provided by Professor Scott Perry.

We look forward to continuing our mission of empowering students and building strong community connections that will shape the media professionals of tomorrow,” says Professor Casper Roth. “This event exemplifies our dedication to providing accessible and high-quality education while fostering invaluable partnerships that benefit not only our students but also the entire community we serve.”

For those interested in today’s recent trends and media landscape, the "Content Creation" workshop, facilitated by Guzmán Gonzáles from Factory Underground, a Norwalk media production studio, equipped students with essential tools and skills to become proficient content creators.

Advancing The Healthcare Of The Region A Leadership Gift that Benefits Us All Erica, a nursing student and recipient of financial support provided by the Mandel funding,remains incredibly grateful for the focus on those studying for careers in healthcare. Erica wrote a note to the Foundation, saying, “I used to think that this profession was only a dream and that I would not be able to achieve this realistically. Knowing that there are people that believe in me and what I can do contributes not only to my self-confidence, but to my drive and compassion. I am so glad that I can be a part of an institution like this and be backed by such incredibly generous people.”

Norwalk Community College is proud to be a leading educator for healthcare workers throughout the state of Connecticut, with its programs in Nursing, Medical Assistant, Certified Nurse Aid, Respiratory Care and more. Over the last 11 years, more than 4,000 graduates from the College’s Center for Science, Health and Wellness (CSHW) have entered the workforce in the field of healthcare. Students graduating with associate degrees in Nursing and other allied health programs have tremendous employment opportunities upon graduation, with an average employment rate of 80%. Now, when the national and local healthcare industries are desperate for compassionate and well-trained professionals to fill unprecedented vacancies in all positions, the College and the Foundation have prioritized meeting the community need with increased funding and access for individuals seeking to join the allied health workforce.

In support of that effort, in February 2023, Norwalk Community College Foundation received a $1 million transformational gift from the Mandel family to support scholarships for Nursing and healthcare programs at Norwalk Community College. Ann Mandel, a former president of the NCC Foundation Board of Directors and a current Board Director Emerita, was instrumental in raising $20 million to build the Center for Science, Health, and Wellness. She has remained active with the NCC Foundation for decades. Her children matched her gift in recognition of her many years of support, leadership, and service to Norwalk Community College Foundation. Ann said she and her family “hope this gift will lead to more leadership gifts, and that it will allow a greater number of students to pursue a career in healthcare. We are pleased that this gift helps to ensure that NCC can continue to provide a top-rated education at an affordable cost. Our entire community benefits when our healthcare workforce is well-educated and highly skilled.”

“More than a decade after they provided leadership support for the CSHW at NCC, Ann and the entire Mandel family continue to inspire us with their generosity, philanthropic leadership, and unwavering belief in the power of a Norwalk Community College education,” said Carrie Bernier, the former President and CEO of the Foundation. Statistically, 59% of students in these allied health programs are first generation college students seeking a degree and a career that will move their families into financial security. Cheryl DeVonish, Chief Executive Officer of Norwalk Community College noted that fact, explaining that “this gift will have life-changing impact for students in need of financial assistance to help them reach their goal of earning a college education. We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the Mandel family and their astute understanding of our students’ needs.”

Building the Healthcare Pipeline with Scholarships: Developing Unique Partnerships Ellen Komar, MPA BSN RN NEA-BC, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer at Stamford Health agrees, adding that “Stamford Health is proud of our long-standing, strategic relationship with NCC. In part due to the pandemic, the healthcare industry at large is currently facing a labor shortage. Our strategic partnership with NCC is important to keep our talent pipeline full. Attracting the next generation of healthcare workers is critical so we can continue to provide our patients with expert, compassionate care.”

To help alleviate the critical shortage of nurses affecting Fairfield County, the Norwalk Community College Nursing Program has partnered with local hospitals to offer graduating registered nurses a unique matching scholarship opportunity to work while earning their bachelor’s degrees. In honor of the 10th anniversary of Norwalk Community College’s Center for Science, Health, and Wellness (CSHW), the Norwalk Community College Foundation has partnered with the Norwalk Hospital/Nuvance Foundation and Stamford Health/Stamford Hospital Foundation to provide matching scholarship funds for nurses employed at the hospitals who are seeking to earn their bachelor's degree. The generous matching funds from this unique partnership will help reduce the student debt burden of nurses who are working full-time while furthering their education.

This initiative only strengthens the substantial partnership between NCC and local healthcare institutions in Fairfield County. During the pandemic, NCC responded to the great need for adequate personal protective equipment by loaning out three ventilators to area hospitals, along with 15,000 medical gloves, 919 masks, and 130 gowns. With the current critical shortage of health workers, the CSHW is addressing the need by establishing these strategic partnerships to ensure that students who are well trained to work in local hospitals and medical facilities are hired and supported in their careers. Carrie Bernier, the President and CEO of the NCC Foundation when the partnership was announced, remarked that “the Foundation is excited to advance our mission to support NCC students by forging these agreements with such esteemed partners as Nuvance Health and Stamford Health. The benefits of this arrangement will help students financially and will ultimately reach every person in Fairfield County at some point in their lives since strong nursing is the backbone of high-quality healthcare systems.”

Norwalk Community College educates more nurses, respiratory therapists, medical assistants, and certified nurses’ aides than any other institution in Fairfield County. More than 2,500 NCC healthcare graduates have joined the ranks of local healthcare institutions serving residents throughout Fairfield County and beyond from one of the six programs housed in the Center for Science, Health, and Wellness at NCC. Of these, more than 60% were first-time college students, more than half were students of color, and nearly 70% were women.

In this exciting new partnership with Norwalk Hospital/Nuvance Foundation and Stamford Health/Stamford Hospital Foundation, each foundation will contribute matching scholarship funds to NCC nursing graduates upon employment by the hospitals so they can pursue their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. With this significant and innovative commitment, the partners demonstrate their dedication to excellence and the goal of supporting local nurses who seek to continue their education and graduate debt-free.

As NCC celebrates sixty years of academic excellence and ten years of state-of-the-art instruction in NCC’s Center for Science, Health and Wellness, the larger community has benefited from increased student access to high-quality educational offerings with an affordable, accessible campus for residents to enjoy.

The Covid-19 pandemic disproportionately affected healthcare workers and resulted in a shortage of nurses across the country, and Fairfield County is no exception. The hospitals are eager to hire Norwalk Community College students, many of whom have already been trained in clinical placements onsite at the hospitals.

“Providing opportunities for nurses in our community through this partnership with NCC is an incredible win, for Norwalk Hospital and the patients we care for every day,” said Peter Cordeau, President of Norwalk Hospital. “The nurses graduating from NCC’s program are compassionate, bright, and deeply invested in providing our patients with the best healthcare possible. Norwalk Hospital and the Nuvance Foundation are proud to support these nurses in their professional and educational journey, and we are grateful for the impact they have on our community.”

Community Partners Support Student Success At Norwalk Community College Foundation, we extend our sincere gratitude to all our community partners who have played a vital role in helping us advance our mission. Their commitment and support inspire us to continue making a difference for the students we serve. Together, we have achieved remarkable outcomes and had a positive impact on student success. Funding from our community partners allows the Norwalk Community College Foundation to support hardworking students while they attend classes at NCC, when they transfer to a four-year institution, and when they begin their careers.

The Norwalk Community College Foundation received $150,000 from The Elisabeth C. DeLuca Foundation to support Allied Health Programs for Workforce Development in Fairfield County. Last year the Elisabeth C. DeLuca Foundation funded 110 scholarships for CSHW students, and 7 transfer scholarships for recent Registered Nurse graduates seeking their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.

The Carle C. Conway Foundation is a private foundation that primarily works with organizations to fund scholarships and workforce development opportunities. NCC students have benefited from over 20 years of investment by the Conway Foundation. In 2022-2023, the Conway Foundation granted the NCC Foundation $53,000 in support of ESL (English as a Second Language) scholarships and the NCC Food Pantry. NCC offers both credit and non-credit classes for ESL students; the ESL credit program enables students to earn college credits that count toward graduation. The NCC Food Pantry is a free resource available to all NCC students to help students with food insecurity remain in college and realize their academic goals.

The Everett S. Bulkley Trust granted $35,000 to identified areas of greatest need at the Foundation. Everett S. Bulkley Trust is a private foundation which has contributed to student success at NCC for over 30 years, transforming the futures of thousands of students.

An Anonymous Foundation awarded NCCF $46,000 in support of the Path2Success program. Path2Success is a combined scholarship and coaching program with master’s level advisors who meet 1:1 bi-weekly with students, developing strategies and skills that empower them to reach their true academic potential.

Fairfield County Community Foundation Business Collaborative for Education Equity (BCEE) provided $40,000 for UPLIFT, a program created to address the significant gaps in equity and achievement among men of color, with the goal of increasing student engagement, persistence, and graduation rates. The BCEE works with local nonprofit organizations to help reduce and eliminate educational disparities among Fairfield County’s most vulnerable students.

The Fairfield County’s Community Foundation awarded $25,000 to the NCC Foundation Summer Bridge enrichment program which gives new college students an opportunity to increase their college readiness before their first semester and set them on the path to graduation. FCCF is a community foundation that serves all 23 cities and towns in Fairfield County and partners with organizations to identify and address equitable opportunities for individuals and families.

The M&T Charitable Foundation provided $13,500 for Summer Bridge, NCC’s enrichment program for new college students. The M&T Charitable Foundation partners with nonprofit organizations that focus on improving the quality of life and offers financial support and resources to many organizations including those that support education and health care and human services.

Bank of America Charitable Foundation granted $10,000 to support UPLIFT’s workforce development internships. Bank of America Charitable Foundation develops partnerships with nonprofit organizations focused on student support, youth and adult workforce development, and eliminating barriers to employment.

The Near & Far Aid Foundation provided $9,000 for student scholarships. Near & Far Aid Foundation is dedicated to eliminating the causes and effects of poverty in Fairfield County. It accomplishes its mission by finding and funding programs that provide life's most basic necessities, as well as those that seek to achieve lasting change by providing help to disadvantaged individuals and families.

With almost 20 years of giving to NCC, First County Bank Foundation continues to support first-year students through the summer enrichment program. First County Bank Foundation granted $8,500 for Summer Bridge, and ESL scholarships. First County Bank Foundation contributes to organizations that increase access to housing and educational enrichment programs, and support community and economic development.

The Bedford Family Social Responsibility Fund at Westport Weston Family YMCA awarded $7,000 to support the UPLIFT program for men of color at NCC. The Fund was established in 2015 to create, enhance, and support educational opportunities for children and young adults. UPLIFT provides wrap-around support to enhance student engagement and success.

A Graduate Working for a Better Community

Sinsois Vincent "My experience at NCC gave me a different perspective about myself. I was laughed at when I first told a coworker I wanted to go back to school to become a nurse. Not only was Ilaughed at, but I was warned to not even think about it. I was advised to change my mind and do something else. However, at NCC, no one showed any doubt in my ability to become a nurse. My advisor led me through the process, and I felt that all of NCC's resources were available to me. I graduated in May 2022, passed the NCLEX and was hired by Stamford Hospital in November 2022.

I love helping people. As a psychiatric nurse, one my favorite assessment questions to know if my patients are getting better is, "can you tell me some of your goals for the future?" It's exciting to hear people say, "I want to go back to school," or "I want to be with my kids." When I go to work, I am excited because my job is more than a paycheck. It is about helping people and keeping them safe. That makes our community a safer place too.

Donor Profile Bob and Joan Jalbert: Dedication to Education In 2023, Bob and Joan Jalbert established a transfer scholarship designed to support recent Norwalk Community College graduates as they pursue bachelor’s degrees. As Bob explained, “Joan and I are both firm believers in the opportunities NCC provides to students in terms of career and transfer programs, job retraining, and personal enrichment.

It brings Joan and I both great joy to continue to support the higher education goals of the diverse, hard-working and worthy population at NCC and this is why we were extremely pleased to establish the Bob and Joan Jalbert UCONN Transfer Scholarship through the NCC Foundation. Establishing this scholarship provides NCC graduates transferring to UCONN with financial assistance allowing them to continue their education. This is of extra significance to me because of the important role that these two institutions played in both my own education and my professional career.”

Bob Jalbert received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. After working one year at Central Connecticut State University, he began his 40-year career at Norwalk Community College in the Fall of 1973.

Bob served in a multitude of positions including Assistant Registrar, Registrar, Coordinator of Information Systems, Director of Institutional Research, and Director of Academic Administration before retiring with Emeritus status in May 2013. During his career at NCC, he also served as an adjunct faculty member, teaching both on-campus and online courses in the Computer Information Systems and Business departments. “In all of my positions at NCC, I always made an effort to interact with students and I received so much personal satisfaction from working closely with them as an advisor, and in the classroom as their instructor, as well,” Bob said.

Joan Jalbert was also a dedicated local educator who worked in the New Canaan K-12 school system as a Speech and Language Pathologist.

Per the Jalberts’ wishes, each year the NCC Foundation will select a qualified graduate of NCC to receive a transfer scholarship to UCONN. The recipient shall be able to receive a second year of funding provided they maintain a GPA of above 3.5 at UCONN. Since their retirement, the Jalberts relocated to Florida and enjoy pursuing interests in travel, boating, golf and taking educational enrichment courses, and enjoy spending time with their daughter, son and four grandchildren. Although they are geographically removed from the region now, their philanthropic intentions are clear: to support high-achieving NCC students as they launch their lives and careers in Connecticut.

The Food Pantry at Norwalk Community College was started in 2015 as a result of an AmeriCorps project that investigated student needs on campus. Our pantry was the first community college food pantry established in Connecticut, and the NCC model has now been replicated at the other 11 campuses across the state. Food and goods have been donated by community partners like Hudson Harvest and local corporations like Pepperidge Farm, and since 2019, the NCC Foundation Emergency Fund has supported food insecure students and their families with over $50,000 in direct funding to The Pantry.

The pandemic highlighted the many financial insecurities community college students experience, but none have been as persistent nor as common as food insecurity. In the 22-23 academic year, food pantry usage quadrupled on our campus, reaching over 10,000 visits by over 1,300 students. The Pantry has locations on both sides of campus, and stocks everything from fresh and shelf-stable foods to diapers and personal hygiene supplies as well. It is clear our student population continue to struggle. The College and the Foundation are committed to supporting these basic needs so that students can stay enrolled and advance toward their academic goals with hunger interrupting their progress.

Roger Silva, a Licensed Physical Therapist and Clinical Education Coordinator of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at NCC, knows all too well the struggles NCC students face. One day last year, as he was working with his long-time private client and good friend, Mr. James (Jim) Bach, he mentioned growing food insecurity on campus. Jim, a Foundation supporter since 2014, was immediately moved to do something. Jim wanted to help but also wanted to incentivize new donors to support NCC’s students. Together, Jim and Roger decided that offering a matching gift to increase both funding and awareness for the campus’ food pantry would be the best approach to engaging the broader community. Roger contacted the Foundation to launch their idea of a monthly donation matching campaign. The campaign started in November 2022 and was incredibly successful. Over the course of the last year direct response from the matching campaign raised over $25,000.
