NATIONAL COALITION OF 100 BLACK WOMEN, INC.

HISTORY

The Coalition began in the winter of 1970 in New York City. Twenty-four Black Women, led by visionary Edna Beach, began meeting in their homes to assess the problems and opportunities left behind in the wake of the turbulent 1960’s. As a result of their meetings, they formed the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.

For the rest of the 1970s, they slowly but persistently worked to master root causes of issues that affected their families, their communities, and themselves. They boldly began to reach out to other Black women in common cause, and eventually, mobilized their emerging stature as a visible force of influence promoting gender and racial equity.

In 1981, the New York Coalition had over 500 members throughout New York City’s 00” in its title. Its effective role-model nity activity won notice in both local cognition, Black women from other on and programs in their own geographic

ion and expanded beyond the boundaries the original title. The National Coalition of 1981, with representatives from 14 ckson McCabe as its first national rew is attested to by the statistics of

2024 CANDACE AWARDS

Candace (pronounced “Can-day-cee”) is translated as “Queen Mother” in the Meroitic language. The Candace is the hereditary title of the Queens of ancient Nubia, Meroe, Kush, and Ethiopia. Under the Candace form of government, the “Queen Mother” was the central political figure - Queens either ruled alone or were equal to their husbands as a coruler. Candace are mentioned in the Bible (Acts 8:27) and their names are carved on ancient Egyptian buildings. It is critical to understand that Candace is not a person, but rather a dynasty that centralized the leadership of African Women as rulers and warrior Queens. Today, we present and honor a few Queen Mothers in Charlotte that selflessly give of themselves in order to serve others.
