The Cascades bioregion includes glaciated peaks, old-growth forests, subalpine meadows, shrubsteppe and the Salish Sea. The North Cascades are one of the wildest intact ecosystems in North America, with an abundance of biodiversity including plant life, birds and a wide range of wildlife. More than 300 glaciers feed countless waterfalls, streams and rivers, including the wild and scenic Skagit River, home to all five native species of salmon and one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles in the country.
The North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, located in the heart of North Cascades National Park on the shores of Diablo Lake, serves as a learning hub for people of all ages. The campus includes multimedia classrooms, a research library, a lakeside dining hall, outdoor learning shelters and trails leading into the surrounding wildlands. For five quarters of the program, students base work and study out of the Environmental Learning Center and live in shared housing in the nearby town of Marblemount. For two quarters, students live in Bellingham and attend classes at Western Washington University.
