HISTORICAL FACT: For North Carolina delegates to the NEA Convention in San Francisco, merger of their state associations was a big story. The merger became a fact on June 28 [1970] when NCTA officials signed the papers necessary to incorporate the new North Carolina Association of Educators. The merger brought a feeling of good will and unity to the Tar Heel delegation, and the feeling spread to the entire convention when John Lucas, chairman of the North Carolina delegation, announced the merger to the 7,000 NEA delegates on hand. — North Carolina Education, September 1970 (the official publication of the North Carolina Association of Educators at that time)

NCAE Celebrates Read Across America Day With Ashley Academy!

An excitement for literacy filled the air at Ashley Academy for Cultural and Global Studies in Winston-Salem on Read Across America Day (March 2), where students enjoyed listening as guest readers read the books “Incredible You,” “M is for Melanin: A Celebration of the Black Child,” and “T is for Tarheel.” Cultural diversity is an important focus of the school’s curriculum for the 2020 school year.

NCAE Hosts Conference Geared Toward Early Career Educators It was a weekend of professional development for educators with five years or less of experience at the NCAE Early Career Educator Weekend Conference February 28-29, held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in the Research Triangle Park. Participants were treated to a panel discussion by seasoned educators, who shared information on everything from ESSA to how young educators can advocate for their students. Former NCAE President and long-time member Eddie Davis gave details on the history of the Association and how NCAE has been the leader in fighting for educators’ rights. Part of the learning experience for participants also included networking and breakout sessions on topics such as Leaders for Schools, Rigors and Relevance, Classroom Management, NEA Student Loan Forgiveness, and Leadership Development, to name a few. The two-day conference left attendees energized and ready to return to their classrooms empowered!

Approximately 100 new educators from around the state participated in the conference.

2020 NCAE Operation Cooperation Outreach Projects (All Items Will be Collected on Friday, April 3, by 1:30 p.m.)

“Operation Backpack” Program Just like communities all across North Carolina, food insecurity is a huge problem in Guilford County. The Out of the Garden Project, founded by residents Don and Kristy Milholin, partners with Guilford County Schools and provides 1,900 students and their families with food to take home for the weekend every Friday. The goal of Operation Backpack is to ensure children are fed and ready to learn by Monday. These meal bags contain between 6-8 lbs of non-perishable food; enough for two meals for a family of four. Items needed include the following: canned meat, chicken, or tuna; canned vegetables, beans, and fruits; canned pasta and soups; dry pasta and canned pasta sauce; macaroni and cheese; individual cereal, oatmeal, or grits (instant and regular); peanut butter and crackers; and granola, fruit, or other healthy bars. “Comfort Backpack” Program Backpack Beginnings, also located in Greensboro, aims to deliver child-centric services to comfort children in need.The organization helps almost 9,000 children experiencing trauma, as well as hunger. It serves 63 Guilford County schools and 40 child assistance organizations in Guilford, Forsyth, and Alamance counties. The items listed are needed to assemble comfort backpacks for children ages 3-17. in the North Carolina Business Plan Competition at Wake Technical Community College in December. The program, held each year by Virtual Enterprises, gives students an opportunity to learn how to start and run a business, as well as give them the opportunity to test drive careers like CEO, marketing manager, HR director, etc.

The winning team was from Northwood High School in Chatham County. Their project, Apex Outdoors, is a company which brings technology into camping. Some of their products include tents with solar panels that generate enough energy to charge phones, tablets, computers, and other devices. They are now qualified to enter the National Business Plan Championships in New York in mid-April.

Two Members Were Among 27 Finalists for NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year Award Kennedy Dockery, a teacher at Jones Intermediate School in Surry County, and Alaysha Rogers, a teacher at Southeast Halifax High School in Halifax County, were selected as finalists for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) Beginning Teacher of the Year Award for their dedication, innovation, and ability to inspire students to achieve.

NCCAT created the award process to honor and retain teachers who are beginning their educational career. The goal is to highlight public school and public charter school teachers who show promise as teachers and leaders across the state. The winner, an educator in Iredell County, received a $5,000 cash prize, participation in a GoGlobal NC trip to Australia, and instructional supply funds for her school.

NC High Schoolers Compete in Program for Best Business Plan Fifty students from eight of the state’s high schools – South Granville High (Granville Co.), Granville Central High (Granville Co.), Northwood High School (Chatham Co.), C.S. Brown High (Hertford Co.), J.F. Webb High (Granville Co.), Franklinton High (Franklin Co.), Orange High (Orange Co.), and Wakefield High (Wake Co.) – competed as finalists

School Districts/Schools Receive Technology Grants 15 North Carolina school districts and schools have been awarded grants totaling $800,000 under the Coding and Mobile App Development Grant Program that was launched in 2017 with funding from the General Assembly. The grants support partnerships with local businesses to help schools develop computer science, coding, and mobile app development programs for middle and high school students.

The award recipients are: •Asheville-Buncombe-Madison Consortium -- $80,000 •Beaufort County Schools -- $79,117.96 •Caldwell County Schools – $46,040 •Carter G. Educator leaders…because of the important role you play in the community, NEA is asking for your help in sharing information about the upcoming 2020 United States Census.

Why does the census matter? An accurate census count of our vibrant and diverse communities brings critical funding to our schools and communities. Census data affect how many new teachers are hired, where to build new schools, where to direct funding for free and reduced lunch, after-school programs, and so much more. Census population counts are also used to apportion seats in the United States House of Representatives as well as state legislatures, county boards, and often school boards. Being counted in the census is essential to political power in America!

Everyone counts in the census. There are no exceptions for age, height, race, citizenship status, or ZIP code. If people live in the country, drive on roads, drink water, or go to school – then they need to be counted. Everyone counts! The federal government uses census population counts to allocate more than $1.5 trillion in funding.

NEA has prepared a toolkit for educators that includes a variety of resources – posters, lesson plans and activities related to the census, graphics and videos to share on social media, and links to external partners that can be valuable for outreach to hard-to-count communities. Those materials can be accessed at www.nea.org/census.
