A Salute to Excellence!

Congratulations to NCAE member Bobbie Cavnar, who was named the recipient of the NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence at the NEA Foundation’s Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D.C. last month. The award is one of public education’s most prestigious and comes with a prize of $25,000. A 12th grade language arts teacher at South Point High School in Gaston County, Cavnar said in his acceptance remarks, “Many of our great artists and thinkers and inventors were born into poverty and were given the opportunity to let their genius show. That’s how public education equalizes life.” Cavnar was nominated for the award by NCAE. He was one of 38 public school educators selected by their state education associations who were honored by the NEA Foundation and more than 900 guests. On stage to congratulate Cavnar were, from left Gary Phoebus, president and CEO of NEA Member Benefits; NCAE President Mark Jewell; and Harriett Sanford, president and CEO of the NEA Foundation. I don’t know where we [educators] would be without the advocacy that NCAE brings to our field. Education is so litigious. One-Bed, One Head

Member Provides Homeless Students With Beds “How can we expect kids to dream about their future when they don’t even have their own bed?” is a question that prompted member Tim Barnsback to recently start the non-profit organization One Head-One Bed, which provides beds to homeless public school students.

A teacher at Heritage Middle School in Burke County, Barnsback said he could not sit back and do nothing after learning about several students who were homeless/transient and sharing beds with adults and younger students.

He discovered one of those students is a friend of his son.

“Homelessness among our students is a growing problem,” said Barnsback, who helped deliver beds to eight students just before Christmas last year, thanks to a generous donation by a local organization. “No matter where students stay, they should always have the comfort and security of sleeping in their own bed.”

When requests begin for beds began to pour in, Barnsback partnered with a friend who works at Disc-o-Bed, a company that offers portable sleep solutions. They work with the county’s

McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act liaison and guidance counselors to identify students in need. “When the need is identified, I deliver the bed to the county liaison, who makes sure the student gets the bed.” Students who meet the McKinney-Vento criteria include those who live in shelters, motels, campgrounds, or are doubled up with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship.

Barnsback said a GoFundMe page was created that has allowed for the purchase of 18 more beds, which is serving an additional 36 homeless students. He is communicating with schools and community partners in Buncombe, Mecklenburg, and Wake counties to expand the outreach and impact.

“According to the North Carolina Homeless Education Program, last year there were an estimated 30,000 homeless students in our state, a 137 percent increase since 2006-2007,” added Barnsback. “These students struggle every day just to survive, and added to that, many of them are struggling in school. It is my hope that

this program will provide them with some stability, which will hopefully lead to a more productive learning environment.”

Gun Violence in Schools... #EnoughIsEnough Days of Action Being Planned “Bringing more guns into our schools does nothing to protect our students and educators from gun violence. Our students need more books, art, and music programs, nurses and school counselors; they do not need more guns in their classrooms. Parents and educators overwhelming reject the idea of arming school staff. Educators need to be focused on teaching our students. We need solutions that will keep guns out of the hands of those who want to use them to massacre children and educators. Arming teachers does nothing to prevent that. We owe it to the students and school personnel, who’ve lost their lives at schools and on campuses across the country, to work together so that we can thoughtfully and carefully develop common sense solutions that really save lives.” -- NEA President Lily Eskelsen-Garcia in response to President Trump’s proposal to arm teachers and school staff in an effort to prevent mass shootings.

Since the February 14 massacre at Parkland High School, and prior tragedies over the past several years, educators, students, parents, and community leaders are standing up against the gun violence that is plaguing our schools.

Later this month, three action events are being planned in which NCAE and NEA will show support. We encourage you to mark your calendars and participate: •

March 14 – The Women’s March has announced a National School Walkout. The idea behind this day is that school communities will walk out of their schools for 17 minutes to honor the lives lost in Parkland. NCAE and NEA will join with AFT in encouraging educators throughout the country to wear orange on this day instead of Red for Ed.

March 24 – Several students who survived the tragedy at Parkland have called for a student-led march and protest.

They are planning to come to Washington, D.C. to meet with politicians on the need to address gun violence and are encouraging others to join. There are other local marches being planned around the country. This is a fully studentplanned march. NCAE Convention will be taking place on this day and there are plans to honor the victims of Parkland and show our support for the march on the 24th. April 20 (SAVE THE DATE) – Together with the National Public Education Network, American Federation of Teachers, Moms Demand Action, Everytown for Gun Safety, Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence, and other national organizations, NCAE and NEA are calling on communities to take action against gun violence on April 20 together in a way that sends a strong message to policymakers that #EnoughIsEnough. April 20 marks the anniversary of the Columbine tragedy.

Right now, specific plans are being developed for April 20 and we will share more in the coming weeks. We also ask that you help us spread the word about this day of action.

In all of the events, we will be supportive of students, educators, parents, and community leaders organizing for change to end gun violence in their schools/communities. We call on principals, administrators, and school districts to support them as well.

Together, we will make a strong statement to stand up against gun violence against our students and schools.
