D

ear Fellow NAA Members, as I write my final magazine article as your 76th President, I am filled with gratitude for the remarkable journey we have shared this past year. Serving you— and our auction community—has been both humbling and inspiring, a capstone in a career that began at my grandfather’s auction in 1992, where I first experienced the spirit of camaraderie that defines our profession.

Schaumburg Awaits Our upcoming Conference & Show in Schaumburg, Illinois (July 15–19) is the culmination of our collective efforts. This milestone gathering will unite the brightest minds and most passionate professionals in our industry. World‑class education sessions, a dynamic Trade Show, and the excitement of the International Auctioneers Championship will offer actionable insights, innovative solutions, and unparalleled networking opportunities.

Year in Review Promotion – We explored a national campaign highlighting the transparency and efficiency of auctions, celebrated a tremendously successful National Auctioneers Week and Day, and positioned our profession as top‑of‑mind for buyers and sellers alike.

Advocacy – Through our Day on the Hill, we tackled issues such as junk‑fee legislation and SBA guidelines while strengthening our Political Action Committee to amplify the industry’s voice in Washington.

Education – We conducted a strategic review of the

CAI designation, initiated a comprehensive rewrite of the AMM designation, and announced the revival of the Real Estate Summit, returning this fall in Denver, ensuring our educational offerings remain cuttingedge and relevant for all members.

Community – Through collaborations with DECA and FFA, as well as community conversations and networking events, we fostered deeper engagement and mentorship throughout the association.

A by‑laws amendment now seats all Cornerstone Chairs on the Board of Directors, giving each pillar a direct role in guiding our strategic direction and accelerating program development.

Gratitude and Farewell As I transition to Past President, I extend heartfelt appreciation to my fellow board members, our dedicated NAA staff, and—most importantly—you, the members who make our association the premier center of professional excellence. Your willingness to serve on committees, mentor newcomers, and share expertise strengthens our community and elevates our entire industry. I invite every member to join us in Schaumburg this July. Together, we will celebrate our achievements, learn from one another, and chart an even brighter future for the auction profession.

John Schultz, CAI, AMM NAA President John Schultz brings over 25 years of experience to his role as Partner and Chief Marketing and Technology Officer at Grafe Auction Company.

He is a previous NAA Board of Directors member and is a leading instructor for the Auction Marketing Management (AMM) designation.

John has also served as the Minnesota State Auctioneers Association President and was the first President of the Minnesota State Auctioneers Foundation.

John was recognized with the NAA President's Award of Distinction in 2022.

The Committee wishes to thank all applicants who applied to join the Committee during the 2025-2026 association year and to welcome Justin Kennedy and Rob Knight, AARE, GPPA, as the two newest members of this critical NAA Cornerstone. Recent committee-related activity included Sara Rose Bytnar, CAI, AARE, AMM, BAS from the DECA Task Force and Janice Martin (NAA staff) attending the DECA International Career Development Conference, where they presented awards to the top three winners in the Auction Marketing Challenge, sponsored by NAA. In addition, several NAA members who have been involved in this impressive contest as creators, were on stage during the competition, as judges, and as quality control of all the scores. Contestant's poise during the interview portion and the bid-calling talent were well showcased! Other FFA states are considering this program and plan to bring another round of auctioneers into the industry. Seeing the NAA community getting involved in both of these NextGen endeavors brings a real sense of purpose and confidence in the future of the industry. With FFA focusing on bid calling and DECA on marketing, the NAA is demonstrating that there is room in the industry for all kinds of auction professionals.

Your Cornerstone Committees at Work

The Education Committee of the NAA has had a productive season marked by major events and exciting developments. The Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) was held from March 30 to April 4 at Indiana University in Bloomington, where 41 students graduated—including NAA President John Schultz, AMM, now a CAI graduate. The Benefit Auction Summit task force is eagerly preparing for the August event in Canada. New this year: BAS designation holders will have exclusive access to a follow-up virtual session with one of the summit speakers for a deeper dive into benefit auction strategies. Planning has also kicked off for the new Real Estate Summit. AARE holders attending the RE Summit can register for an exclusive pre-summit seminar focused on advanced real estate education and networking.

Designation Academy returns the week of December 8 in Las Vegas, with registration opening in July. Designation-holderexclusive Community Conversations continue this May and June. We welcome the new Education Committee officers and trustees—including incoming Chair Billie Jo Schultz, CAI, AMM, and Vice Chair Cammy Theurer McComb, CAI, AMM, along with new trustees Shane McCarrell, CAI, AARE, BAS, CES, and Bradley Stoecker, CAI, AARE, AMM, CES.

DECA & NAA Auction Marketing Challenge DECA Inc. and the NAA are excited to announce the winners of the 2025 Auction Marketing Campaign Challenge! The participants created campaigns based on a specific target market, product offerings, market potential and marketing and distribution strategy, individually or as a team of up to three DECA students. They then submitted video presentations included social, print and email direct marketing strategies showcasing their chosen personal property and real estate category—luxury, country, or suburban. Congratulations to Marcela Johnson, 1st place; Shreenidhi Kunta, 2nd place; and Allen Cisto, 3rd place, each shared that the research process into this challenge opened their eyes to marketing in the auction industry as a viable option for their goals! News State Watch Michigan The Michigan Auctioneers Association held its annual Conference January 28-30 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

The MAA also celebrated their 34th annual Auctioneer & Ringman Championships. This conference offered ample networking and educational opportunities. The MAA extends their gratitude to all attendees for participating, organizing, and supporting this year's Conference.

South Carolina The South Carolina Auctioneer Association gathered for an incredible weekend on February 23-24 in beautiful Hilton Head Island. Auctioneers from across the state came together for a time of fellowship, learning, and competition. A highlight of the event was the induction of Carroll McGee into the SCAA Hall of Fame. His dedication and contributions to the auction industry were celebrated by all in attendance. The weekend also featured continuing education classes, providing valuable insights and knowledge to help auctioneers enhance their skills and stay up to date in the profession. Of course, no convention is complete without some friendly competition!

Congratulations to all of our winners across all divisions in the auctioneer contest—we commend your hard work and talent. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this year’s convention such a success. We look forward to another great event next year!

News Tennessee The Tennessee Auctioneers Association (TAA) extends sincere thanks to all members who participated in the 2025 Legislative Day on the Hill. This impactful event provided an invaluable opportunity for TAA members to meet with legislators and advocate for the continued growth and recognition of the auction industry. A special highlight of the day was the recognition of the 2024 International Auctioneer Champion, Shane McCarrell, CAI, AARE, BAS, CES, on both the Senate Floor and during the House Agriculture Committee session. TAA is proud to celebrate Shane’s achievements and the vital role auctioneers play in communities across Tennessee and beyond. Through active engagement and thoughtful dialogue, our members helped ensure that the voice of the auction industry was heard loud and clear at the Capitol.

Oklahoma Members of the Oklahoma State Auctioneers Association (OSAA) gathered at the Capitol to proudly support our 2025 Oklahoma State Champion Auctioneer, Jacob Burley, and our Oklahoma State Champion Ringman, Jesse Highsmith. In a historic first, both champions showcased their talents by selling live on the floor of the House and the Senate. This inaugural event highlights the power and professionalism of the Auction Method of Marketing, offering legislators and guests a front-row seat to the energy and expertise auctioneers bring to the industry. News Confirmation Hearing for Billy Long for IRS Commissioner On May 20, longtime NAA member Billy Long testified at his confirmation hearing for Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner before the Senate Finance Committee.

Former NAA Presidents Paul C. Behr, CAI, BAS; Lance Walker, CAI, BAS, CES; and Terri Walker, CAI, BAS, CES were seated in the front row, reflecting NAA’s commitment to leadership and advocacy on the national stage. We appreciate Senator Marsha Blackburn (TN) for recognizing Congressman Long's experience as an auctioneer as a valuable asset to public service and for highlighting his induction into the NAA Hall of Fame among his many accomplishments. As of publication, the date for the confirmation vote has not yet been announced.

Legacy Youth Scholarship Winners The Legacy Youth Scholarship Committee is a committee under the governance of the National Auction Foundation.

Its mission is to provide scholarships to well deserving students and networking opportunities to our supporters and their families. The Foundation Legacy Youth Scholarship Fund will award at least three scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each to qualified candidates each year. Scholarships are payable for use in the upcoming school year.

Shaping Policy to Protect the Profession Highlights from NAA’s 2025 Day on the Hill

E

very spring, the National Auction Association’s Day on the Hill brings the industry together to make its voice heard where it matters most—Washington, DC. This year, on April 28–29, that voice rang loud and clear as the power of auction advocacy took center stage. Attendees engaged in an interactive event that provided the tools, knowledge, and platform needed to influence legislation and champion the future of the industry.

Day one was dedicated to equipping members with a strong foundation of knowledge, ensuring they were fully prepared for productive meetings with lawmakers and government officials on day two. From in-depth sessions led by a seasoned NAA member with extensive legislative experience to dynamic panel discussions with representatives from partner associations, attendees spent the day learning from some of the most knowledgeable voices in the field, building the insights necessary for impactful advocacy.

Addison Russell—NAA member, attorney, and lobbyist for the Tennessee Auctioneers Association—kicked off the morning by urging state associations to take a proactive stance in their advocacy efforts.

She offered practical strategies for organizing successful legislative days and rallying like-minded individuals to become engaged in grassroots advocacy. Building on that foundation, she highlighted emerging policy trends impacting auctioneers nationwide.

Her core message was clear: when legislation surfaces in one state, it can quickly become a policy issue in yours. Mobilization is critical to protecting the profession, and success comes when the industry speaks with a unified voice. Timely education, swift response, and broad participation through events like Day on the Hill are essential to shaping legislation rather than reacting to it.

The first afternoon wrapped up with two insightful panels: Lessons from Partner Industries and Effective Lobbying Strategies from NAR. We extend our sincere thanks to the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA), National Association of Realtors (NAR), National Auto Auction Association (NAAA), and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) for sending their advocacy leaders to share their expertise.

These panelists are some of the most respected professionals in their fields, and they brought years of experience navigating the legislative landscape to share with attendees.

With lawmakers juggling input from countless industries and interest groups, effective advocacy demands more than just statistics; it demands authenticity. “Be genuine and humanize your data,” advised Tanner Beymer, NAA member and Executive Director of Government Affairs for NCBA. “The more important it feels to you, the more important your message will feel to your representative.”

Max Cole, Director of Communications for NAAA, reinforced the importance of preparation: “Do your homework.” He encouraged attendees to research their legislators—follow their social media, understand their current priorities, and tailor advocacy messages accordingly. Meetings with lawmakers are opportunities to be maximized. After all, advocacy and wasted time don’t go together.

The second panel addressed a common frustration: the prominence of polarizing political figures. Raley Wright, Republican Federal Legislative Representative for NAR, referred to these attention-grabbing politicians as “show horses.” “These congressmen and women are what stir the pot and why many people believe Congress doesn’t work,” she said. But she urged attendees not to lose faith in the process. “Workhorses get the job done. Every state carries more workhorses than show horses.”

While headline-makers often dominate the national spotlight, real change is most often driven by those deeply committed to public service.

Building on Wright’s point, Kathryn Crenshaw, Democrat Federal Legislative Representative for NAR, noted, “The most power you can have is at the state and local levels.” This underscores the critical role state and local representatives play in staying closely connected to their communities and addressing issues at the ground level—complementing the broader efforts of federal policymakers. Effective advocacy begins by identifying these key decision-makers, regardless of political affiliation, and building direct, authentic relationships with them.

After being prepped through education, attendees were ready to head to Capitol Hill for a day of congressional meetings advocating for the industry they love. Members were sent with two key talking points: 1.

Addressing Big Tech Challenges: Auctioneers face unfair censorship, inconsistent platform policies, and sudden changes on tech platforms. We urge legislators to push for clearer, fairer regulations to support auction businesses and ensure a competitive, thriving digital marketplace.

Opposing Overly Broad Junk Fee Legislation: While intended to protect consumers, overly broad junk fee regulations can harm small auction businesses by increasing compliance costs and limiting flexibility. NAA advocates for more narrowly defined legislation that protects both consumers and auction professionals.

Members shared positive feedback following their meetings, noting that many congressional offices were receptive and engaged with the challenges auctioneers are facing in today’s marketplace. The NAA is now actively working with legislative staff to determine the next steps to advance our advocacy efforts on these key issues. Some members also met with the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Office of Advocacy that day, an independent office within the SBA that represents the views and concerns of small businesses before the federal government. NAA President John Schultz, CAI, AMM, declared it the best meeting he has ever had on the Hill—a significant statement from someone who has participated in many over the years. Chip Bishop, Deputy Chief Counsel of the Office, was immediately attentive to the issues auction businesses face, particularly the ongoing challenges with auctioning EIDL collateral. Despite short notice, Bishop ensured that the right government officials were in the room, those in a position to make progress on a problem that has hindered business operations for too long. The NAA is confident that this meeting marks the beginning of a productive relationship with the Office of Advocacy, one that has the potential to deliver real benefits for members well into the future.

What Is UCC Section 2-328 and Why Is It Crucial for Auctioneers To Know?

CC Section 2-328 is the section relating to auctions in Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). It is the only section in Article 2 that specifically discusses auctions.

Before looking at the specific provisions of UCC 2-328, it is helpful to have some background. Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code governs the sale of “goods”. The term “goods” means “all things that are movable at the time of identification to a contract for sale.” This broad definition generally refers to all personal property. (Article 2 applies whether the goods are sold at a live or online auction.) The term does not include, for example, information, intellectual property, money, real estate, investment securities, or lawsuits.

Article 2 was part of the original Uniform Commercial Code approved in 1951. Article 2 represented a revision and modernization of the Uniform Sales Act, which was initially approved by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws in 1906. The Uniform Law Commission and American Law Institute approved a revised Article 2 in 2003, but the revision was not adopted in any state. So, it was subsequently withdrawn by both organizations in 2011. With some exceptions, the 1951 version of Article 2 is the most recent official version. Article 2 was adopted in all states, except Louisiana.

Section 2-328 has been around for a long time and has become bedrock for auction law. Therefore, auctioneers must be aware of the same and understand its impact on the auction method of marketing. Even though it is limited to auctions relating to the sale of goods, it has been considered and discussed persuasively by courts in cases dealing with real estate and other assets. Section 2-328 provides: (1) In a sale by auction, if goods are put up in lots, each lot is the subject of a separate sale.

(2) A sale by auction is complete when the auctioneer announces by the fall of the hammer or in another customary manner. Where a bid is made while the hammer is falling in acceptance of a prior bid, the auctioneer may, in his discretion, reopen the bidding or declare the goods sold under the bid on which the hammer was falling.

(3) Such a sale is with reserve unless the goods are

in explicit terms put up without reserve. In an auction with reserve, the auctioneer may withdraw the goods at any time until he announces completion of the sale.

In an auction without reserve, after the auctioneer calls for bids on an article or lot, that article or lot cannot be withdrawn unless no bid is made within a reasonable time. In either case, a bidder may retract his bid until the auctioneer announces completion of the sale, but a bidder’s retraction does not revive any previous bid.

(4) If the auctioneer knowingly receives a bid on the seller’s behalf or the seller makes or procures such a bid, and notice has not been given that liberty for such bidding is reserved, the buyer may at his option avoid the sale or take the goods at the price of the last good faith bid prior to the completion of the sale. This subsection shall not apply to any bid at a forced sale.

This short section contains several key rules. Here is a brief summary of some of the rules: (A) The first paragraph is the lot-by-lot rule. This means that each lot is the subject of a separate sale, unless lots are grouped together for sale at the auction.

In other words, each lot has a separate contract for sale.

(B) The second paragraph has two rules. The first is that the sale is complete when the auctioneer announces its completion by the fall of the hammer or in other customary manner. This includes, for example, the auctioneer announcing that something has been sold. The second rule relates to bids made while the hammer is falling.

(C) The third paragraph contains three rules. First, it establishes the legal presumption that an “auction is with reserve unless the goods are in explicit terms put up without reserve.” That means that if the auction terms do not clearly say it is an auction without reserve (or an absolute auction), then everyone should know that it is an auction with reserve. Second, it states when an auctioneer may withdraw goods in an auction with reserve and an auction without reserve. Third, it states when a bidder may retract their bid and the effect of the retraction.

(D) The fourth paragraph relates to the seller bidding at a reserve auction (seller bidding would not make sense at an auction without reserve). It provides that a seller cannot bid at the auction unless notice has been given that liberty for such bidding is reserved.

The rule does not apply to forced sales (such as

bankruptcies and foreclosures), so the seller could bid in those situations.

This section also gives the buyer a remedy if the seller bids at the auction and there is no disclosure that the seller reserved the right to bid. In that situation, the “buyer may at his option avoid the sale or take the goods at the price of the last good faith bid prior to the completion of the sale.”

In conclusion, UCC Section 2-328 is critical for auctioneers to understand. Auctioneers should be aware of the impact of the rules mentioned above, which arise out of that Section of the UCC, and develop a plan to conduct the necessary due diligence to comply with the same. This should include developing more expertise relating to what is being sold and determining how the property is marketed before and during the auction to increase the likelihood of avoiding the consequences of violating these rules. Always consider retaining an expert to assist you with any due diligence when appropriate. If an auctioneer does not understand or follow the general provisions, they invite disputes and costly litigation. Finally, auctioneers should consider developing and using specific contract terms addressing the principles of

Pulling in a New Generation

Auctioneers offer ways to connect with younger audiences

S

ince its inception, auctioneering has been a dynamic industry constantly evolving to meet demands, but the shifting generational markets create an ongoing challenge.

Bryce Hansen, CAI, president of Hansen Auction Group, put it best when he said in last year’s Conference & Show seminar on the subject of shifting generational markets that “this is something that could have been a topic 50 years ago – how do you adapt to the new people coming in? This industry is all about change, and it’s about how to adapt to buyers and sellers.”

The Value of Education Anne Nouri, CAI, AARE, BAS, GPPA, a licensed real estate professional, is on the front lines of generational wealth shifting hands and feels a responsibility to educate the public about what the auction industry can provide. One outlet through which she offers this information is her podcast, The Downsizing Coach. Some topics include tax-deferred real estate investing, from clutter to cash, estate planning 101, heritage preservation, and downsizing.

“I use that as an opportunity to bring in other individuals to interview and to educate my audience,” she said, adding that there needs to be a shift in auctioneers’ mindsets that they’re more than just service providers. “I think the mindset should be that we are educators about different options. And providing options and opportunity to sellers is

the greatest gift we can share.”

Auctioneers are in a unique position. They have direct contact with folks looking to part with property and pass on the earnings to their loved ones. The auctioneer can connect them with professionals who can guide them in reinvesting those earnings instead of cashing out and taking a huge tax hit.

Nouri notes that while the younger generation may not have amassed the wealth necessary to acquire assets, having that conversation now about how to pass on assets from the elders to their loved ones is an important one. “We are able to create family harmony,” Nouri said.

“We’re able to help them transition from not just selling the asset, but now you’ve opened the door to purchasing potentially multiple assets.”

The Role of Social Media The agriculture and construction industries are no strangers to the auction method. But the average person on the street is unfamiliar with the auction process, so would they consider selling their family estate at auction? “No, they don’t. There is a huge opportunity for new sellers to become clients” he says.

In an effort to reach that audience, Hansen says his company is relying, at least partially, on social media. But it takes work. It’s not enough to have a website or a Facebook page. The analogy he offers

is having all your friends over to your house and slapping a “for sale” sign on the wall, which is the impact a basic social media will have.

Auctioneers are tasked with getting beyond that layer of friends/followers and to the larger audience actually looking to buy, which takes creating an actual campaign built on a solid, data-driven strategy. “Are you just posting on your Facebook page or are you developing ad content and good ads to a target market?” he said. “It’s really a night and day difference.”

Not all content is going to land directly on buyers, and that’s okay, as Hansen says that the younger generation may not have the wealth to make purchases, but they influence those around them who can. This is especially true with the content his company develops for TikTok. “Seventy percent of the users on TikTok are 18 to 25,” he said. “They are influencers to the buyers.”

Most of his company’s TikTok posts get a couple thousand views and a few likes, but one went viral, getting 132,000 views, 26,000 likes, and 111 comments. But does going viral bring his company buyers and sellers?

That is yet to be determined, but they do know that it is helping to build their brand.

Hansen notes that the younger generation is more motivated to engage if they are more emotionally invested, which is why his company is creating behind-the-scenes Reels for Facebook and content on other platforms. These Reels provide a connection that a traditional ad cannot.

“That attaches and they build relationships more with that,” he said.

“They want to see more how we do it, why we do it.”

Becky Tarlton has lived and breathed auctioneering since 1987. She has reached an age where she jokes that she should consider not only retiring but also “going into assisted living.” Ironically, one of Tarlton’s tasks at Swicegood Group, a real estate and asset marketing firm, is to get their goods in front of a younger audience. Like Hansen, she’s also had success with social media. Tarlton was surprised at how much engagement she gained on a Facebook Reel about some of her company’s assets.

“I did a little Reel on Facebook and it had over 4,000 hits,” she said.

“I had people come to pick up their items and they said, ‘we’ve never met before, but I saw your Reel on Facebook.’ That lets me know they’re looking and we’re bringing in people who would have never been a registered bidder with us.”

Investing in Interactions Change is difficult, and for auctioneers who have done something the same way for years and years, it’s even more difficult to make change. But to reach the younger generation, said Kari Chance, a seller success coach with Sandler Custom Growth Solutions, “you have to change the way you think about a situation and the way you approach it.” “That all starts with your mindset,” she said. “And then you change your actions and then your interactions.”

Why listen to Chance? Aside from the fact that she educates clients full time on changing the way they approach communicating, she’s also a Millennial – the generation of people auctioneers are trying to reach. One of the stereotypes about Millennials, which Chance confirms, is that they are ready and willing to say “no” to just about anything. Furthermore, when someone tells her generation they “should” do something, they will likely do the opposite. The better option, she said, is to understand how they choose to be communicated with and to adapt the way you are speaking so you are heard.

“We don’t trust salespeople,” she said. “The key here is when you have interactions, you’re not trying to sell them on becoming a part of the auction world or utilizing auction services – you don’t want to sell to them – it’s the last thing you want to do, because the harder you sell, the harder they push back.”v

Q&A With President Morgan Hopson Why did you want to become NAA President?

Why now?

I wanted to become President of the NAA because I believe in the future of this association and in the responsibility we all share to keep strengthening it. This role isn’t about titles; it’s about mission-focused leadership. It’s about believing that our industry makes a meaningful impact in the world and in the lives of others and that our association and its members are the backbone of that impact.

My leadership journey began with confidence in the strength of this community and a deep sense of responsibility to help the association evolve, adapt, and thrive. During my tenure as President, I want to see the NAA fully step into its vision of being the voice of the auction industry: as the first call for auction-related expertise, as a hub for resources and innovation, and as a professional home our members are proud to call their own.

Over the past fifteen years, this association has shaped my career and sharpened my sense of purpose. I’ve seen and experienced what happens when people are invested in one another, when seasoned professionals take the time to mentor, challenge, and champion the next generation.

That legacy of leadership matters. As only the fourth woman and the youngest member to hold this office since 1949, I recognize the weight of this moment and the responsibility it carries.

This next chapter of leadership is about building on momentum, honoring the work that’s been done, and continuing to move forward with clarity, dedication, and connection.

Because the work’s not done. We’re in the midst of a significant transition as an association. With new leadership on the horizon and a highly engaged board at the table, we’re entering a season that invites both reflection and bold action. Not every association with our tenure gets the opportunity to hit the reset button, but we do. And we owe it to our members, our mission, and our future to get it right.

There’s real momentum right now. Energy is building, not just at the board level, but throughout our membership. People are paying attention. They’re stepping up, speaking out, and leaning in. That tells me the intentional work we’ve been doing as a board resonates and that we have a unique opportunity to turn this moment into meaningful, lasting progress.

What do you want to see happen in the next year for the NAA? What are your priorities?

One of my top priorities is ensuring that the NAA continues to step boldly into its vision of being the voice of the auction industry, not just in word, but in presence, influence, and action. That means increasing our visibility in Washington, D.C., forging stronger relationships with like-minded associations, and positioning ourselves as the first call for auction-related expertise. It means leading innovation, expanding our educational reach, and remaining a professional home that our members are proud to call their own.

With new leadership ahead, including the addition of a CEO and Kristina Franz stepping into the new role of COO, we have a rare opportunity to realign and reenergize. I’m confident that, working in partnership with the board, this leadership team will bring renewed focus to how we engage members, elevate our profession, and strengthen key relationships across the industry and beyond.

We’ll also continue building the future of the profession through expanded NextGen outreach, particularly through our partnerships with FFA, DECA, and Scouting America, to engage additional youth organizations where alignment makes sense. I believe the time and energy we invest in students today will drastically reshape the landscape of our industry over the next 10 to 15 years. It’s not just about creating a pipeline of future auction professionals; it’s about ensuring young people understand the value of the auction method of marketing, how it supports transparent transactions, and how it creates a fair and competitive marketplace. Even if these students never enter the industry as professionals, they’ll carry that knowledge forward as business owners, decision-makers, and advocates for the auction profession.

Another key priority is ensuring the NAA is positioned for long-term financial strength and stability. That means continuing to grow our reserves, operate responsibly, and make decisions that position the association to serve today’s members and future generations. A strong financial foundation allows us to remain focused on our mission, invest in meaningful member value, and ensure the NAA is here and thriving for decades to come.

Above all, I want our members to feel connected to one another, to their board, and to the future of this association. Transparency, trust, and two-way communication matter. Whether someone is a longtime member or just starting their journey with the NAA, they should feel seen, heard, and valued. That sense of connection builds strong communities, and strong communities keep associations moving forward with purpose and impact.

How can the NAA continue to grow?

Growth starts with listening. It comes from engaging our members in meaningful ways, ensuring they feel seen, supported, and valued. It comes from advocacy, showing up in the right rooms, and truly being the voice of the auction profession. And it comes from building intentional relationships with like-minded organizations that help expand our reach and relevance.

Growth also requires us to think creatively, respond to our members’ needs, and remain open to new ideas that strengthen our impact. Innovation and relevance go hand in hand. If we’re grounded in our mission and guided by our vision, we can adapt and evolve in ways that keep the NAA strong, not just for today’s members but also for the next generation.

And as we look outward, we can elevate the auction industry’s visibility through authentic storytelling. Capturing and sharing real footage, voices, and testimonies, like we did during National Auctioneers Week, helps educate the public, celebrate our members, and showcase the true value of what this association represents.

How can our four Cornerstone Committees best serve the NAA in the years to come?

Our Cornerstones represent the heart of the NAA. Their strength lies in the alignment, innovation, and collaboration they’ve built and their ability to adapt as the needs of our members and our industry continue to evolve. Each one plays a unique role in delivering value to our members while intentionally advancing the mission of the association.

Promotions can amplify our reach and reinforce our relevance — both within the profession and to the public — by highlighting member stories, auction successes, and the power of the auction method of marketing.

Advocacy is critical in ensuring the auction industry has a voice and a seat at the table. Our work here must be proactive, strategic, and sustained — especially as policy and public perception continue to evolve.

Community strengthens the connections that make our association special. Engaging members at every stage of their careers creates a sense of belonging that drives retention, relevance, and shared purpose.

Education equips our members with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to stay competitive, confident, and prepared for what’s to come in this ever-changing landscape.

When our Cornerstones work in harmony, they don’t just support the association, they propel it.

Where do you see the auction industry a year from now?

A year from now, the auction industry will be even more visible, connected, and clearly understood as a powerful force in the modern marketplace. We’ll continue to see growth across all communities of practice as clients and consumers seek out transparent, competitive ways to buy and sell.

Technology will continue to influence how auctions are conducted and the tools we use in our everyday businesses. However, the essence of what makes this profession so trusted (integrity, transparency, and the power of competitive bidding) will remain unchanged. Whether online, live, or a blend of both, the auction method will keep proving its value across every sector.

As professionals, we must stay agile, responsive, and informed. That’s where the NAA comes in: as a steady source of leadership, education, and connection, helping our members navigate an evolving landscape while staying rooted in the strengths that have always defined this industry.

What has made your career successful?

A strong support system. I’m surrounded by an incredible team of people who believe in me, encourage me, and allow me to show up at my best. Any leader will tell you that no career is built alone. And while I pair that support with a disciplined work ethic, a growth mindset, and the drive to show up as my best self every day, I know I wouldn’t be where I am without the steady presence of my colleagues, family, friends, and mentors.

My parents have been a constant example of integrity, humility, and hard work. They’ve shown me what it means to stay true to your word, how to lead with quiet confidence, and how to treat people with respect, especially when faced with adversity and in times when the easiest decision isn’t necessarily the best one. I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to work alongside Craig Buford (pictured below), who has been a mentor, a leader, and someone I consider family throughout my life. His belief in me and investment in my growth have profoundly impacted my career.

I’m also profoundly grateful for our team, which keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes and allows me to lead well, especially when traveling for work or fulfilling NAA responsibilities. Their consistency, trust, and commitment allow me to focus entirely on what’s in front of me, knowing the work is still getting done.

As you grow older and continue to evolve as a leader, you start to realize that success isn’t only about what you accomplish in your career.

It’s also about how you show up for the people who matter most. It’s about making space for friends, family, and the relationships that keep you grounded. I’m learning to be more intentional with my time and energy, not just to lead with clarity, but to build a life and career that are both meaningful and sustainable. It’s easy to chase success by the world’s standards, but I’m learning to measure it in gratitude, presence, and the people who walk beside me.

What does it mean to you to be the youngest President of the NAA? Holding this office as the youngest President in our association’s history is both an incredible honor and a profound responsibility. It reminds me daily that leadership isn’t defined by age, but by character, vision, and the willingness to serve. I’m deeply grateful to the members who placed their trust in me, and I carry that trust into every room, every decision, and every conversation.

Being the youngest President, a first-generation auctioneer, and only the fourth woman to hold this office since 1949, adds a deeper layer of meaning. I didn’t set out to break precedent, but I recognize the sheer significance of this moment and what it might represent for others in our profession. I want every member, no matter where they are in their career, to see themselves represented and to know that their voice matters. It inspires me to champion NextGen initiatives, to foster open dialogue, and to create pathways for emerging auctioneers to step forward.

Above all, it means leading with humility and purpose. I carry the confidence of our membership and the lessons of those who came before me into every decision. My goal is to ensure that we continue to raise the bar for our profession together, leaving an even stronger NAA for those who follow.

Who is Morgan Hopson...in your own words?

Loyalty, intentionality, and a strong sense of responsibility shape how I lead and live. I show up fully for people, commitments, and the work that matters. Driven but thoughtful, steady but collaborative, I believe leadership means setting a high bar while lifting others along the way.

Though I value excellence, I’m learning that not everything has to be perfect to be impactful. That’s a lesson I’m still working on. I may not always get it right, but I can promise that every decision I make comes from a place of care for this membership and deep respect for our industry.

Faith is the foundation that anchors my life, and I hope it shows, not just in what I say, but in how I treat others: with grace, kindness, and compassion. I think a lot about the kind of legacy I want to leave. Not one defined by titles or accomplishments, but one built on love, humility, and the belief that every person matters. If my time in this role leads someone else to feel valued, included, or inspired to step up, that’s the kind of mark I hope to make.

I’m an only child with strong family bonds, a first-generation auctioneer, a die-hard TCU fan (Go Frogs!), a music lover, a foodie, a golfer, and a travel enthusiast. I lead with clarity and purpose, but I also believe in making space for laughter, connection, and the small moments that make the work worthwhile. I deeply treasure new and old friendships because of the joy they bring into my life. Life’s too short not to enjoy it, and far too meaningful not to lead with purpose.

At the end of the day, I’m a member of the National Auction Association, just like everyone else. This is simply my turn to serve.

Was there a specific need you saw in the auction industry that prompted the business?

We observed that the auction industry was being served by traditional payment processors, who did not fully understand the unique demands of live and online auctions — specifically, the need for fast, reliable funding, flexible mobile and remote payment options, and customized solutions for both buyer and seller transactions. Auctioneers were often forced into rigid, high-cost programs that didn’t fit their sales cycles, leading to cash flow disruptions and unnecessary risk holds. EDPS stepped in to provide a tailored solution, offering fast access to funds, mobile and online payment tools designed explicitly for auctions, transparent pricing with no hidden fees, and a dedicated support team that understands the auction business. Our focus is to protect the auctioneer’s reputation and revenue stream while providing peace of mind at every event.

Is there anything new you’re particularly excited about this year?

Students from Stanly Community College’s Carolina Auction Academy (CAA) put their auctioneering skills to the test during a live auction held at Hinson’s Auction House on March 13. As part of their 96-hour course requirements and final exam, each student contributed three items, which were auctioned off to enthusiastic bidders. The event raised more than $1,900, with all proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The auction drew strong support from the community, including many CAA graduates who returned to show their encouragement.

As a highlight of the program, students voted for two peer awards: Best All Around and Most Improved. This year’s honorees were Casey Aldridge, Best All Around, and Erin McPherson, Most Improved. Additionally, special recognition was given to students who traveled significant distances to attend the program. Susan Collins of Louisburg, N.C., commuted over three hours and was recognized as the North Carolina Travel Award recipient. Vicky Wynn of Charleston, S.C. frequently flew into Charlotte before driving to Locust and was honored as the recipient of South Carolina Travel Award.

“We are incredibly proud of this dedicated group of students,” said CAA instructor Ivan Broadwell. “They worked hard, and this auction was a testament to their skills and commitment to the craft.” The next class begins in the fall and will be a blended format, with most sessions held in person and over one third of the program online. In Memory Robert Frey Robert G. Frey passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on May 21, 2025 at the age of 85. He was born in Wauseon, Ohio, March 14, 1940 the first of nine children to Elias & Katherine (Eicher) Frey. Robert (Bob) was married on June 19, 1965 to Joyce D. Oyer at Meadows Mennonite Church in Meadows, Illinois.

Bob grew up on the family farm just outside of Archbold, Ohio where he developed his love for farm life, tractors and auctions. His father Elias was a co-founder of Yoder & Frey, a farm machinery auction yard. At a young age Bob would line toys in his yard and auction them off to his brothers and sisters. He was also known to hide in the back seat of Elias’ car with his brothers when it was auction day. After he graduated from Ridgeville High School in 1958, Bob immediately went to Reppert Auction School in Decatur, Indiana to begin his lifelong auction career, and started calling bids at Yoder & Frey thereafter. Bob was baptized at Central Mennonite Church at a young age. Bob’s life of service extended beyond the church and flourished into assisting numerous charities by serving on their boards or conducting countless benefit auctions Some of those charities included Little Eden Camp, Sunshine Communities, Mennonite Central Committee, Fairlawn Haven, Adriel, Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Bluffton College, Fulton County Jr. Fair Livestock Auction, and numerous others.

Bob, Butch and Ron founded Frey & Sons in 1963 to conduct construction equipment auctions, buy and sell equipment, and later expanded into real estate sales and development. Bob continued bid calling through age 83. Some of his business accolades include: 2001 Ohio Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame; 2006 National Auctioneers Hall of Fame; 2013 Archbold Citizen of the Year and F&M Bank Board of Director from 1987-2012. Bob was a truly bold and determined individual when he set his sights on something. Throughout his life, he faced challenges, including a severe stroke in 2004. Despite this, Bob’s unwavering faith and “never give up” spirit propelled him through extensive and often excruciating therapy. He persevered to the point where he could once again walk, talk, sing and even continue his work as an auctioneer. It is our family’s hope that Bob’s life serves as an inspiration for us all to live with similar determination and maintain a positive outlook, no matter what we face. He will be deeply missed.
