ABOUT ME

Age: 15 (In human years)

Educational Background: Brooks Primary School

Likes: Flying, hunting for fish, dancing

Dislikes: Hunters, swimming, people who are ungracious and selfish.

Habits: Making sure my feathers are neat.

Hi! I am Eagor the Eagle, a Brooksian student! I love flying around Singapore. I chose Northbrooks Secondary School as it is near the Seletar Aerospace Hub. Since young, my ambition is to lead and inspire other eaglets to be the best they can be. I love my school as it houses Brooksian Champions who, like me, are eager to learn. Naturally, we aspire to soar higher each day, and we know we can with grit and resilience, and by holding fast to our values. My best friend, Ellie, believes that I have the fortitude to overcome obstacles during my fledgling period here at Northbrooks. I enjoy gliding around Northbrooks, interacting with my fellow Brooksians, scaling the rock wall, applying theories at Aerospace lessons or even practising mindfulness at our garden. I will work hard and stay true to our school motto of “Soaring Yet Rooted”.

EAGOR’S

NEST The Beginning

Northbrooks Secondary School started at the dawn of a new millennium on 2 January 2000 with eight Secondary 1 classes. Built at a cost of over $23 million, the school is fullyequipped with IT facilities and is set amidst the beautiful natural surroundings of Yishun Park. The school is united in its desire to do its very best for its students and to prepare them for the future knowledge-based workplace. Besides developing their capacity to learn, the School also focuses on building the character of its students and helping them to develop compassion for others. The name Northbrooks is derived from the Yuan Dynasty proverb 饮水思源. This is one of the core moral values inculcated in all Brooksians: to always remember their roots and to be grateful to their family, teachers, friends and country for the success they achieve in life.

The Brooksian Crest Just as WATER

Is the basis of life, as a school, we will provide a nurturing and challenging environment, to inspire our pupils to learn and grow.

Just as TREES Like Aspens and Giant Redwoods grow in groves supporting each other with their roots intertwined, people too are connected by a system of roots (our family and friends). When pounded by the storms of life we need to hold each other up; just as the Oak with its deep penetrating roots withstands strong winds and violent storms, we will build a strong foundation of moral values so that our pupils will have the moral courage to make the right choices in life; just as the spreading branches of the Oak provides shelter against the sun and nesting places for birds, we will provide opportunities for our pupils to develop their talents and abilities to the fullest, so that they in turn can reach out to touch the lives of others and make a positive difference to their community and our nation.

GOLD Background With a firm foundation of sound moral values to guide their thinking, our pupils with have the confidence to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. They will be well-balanced individuals, anchored by strong roots and equipped with the wings to soar to great heights to achieve their dreams with integrity; and they will become people with values and of value to their community our country.

The Brooksian Anthem With Brooksian fervour Lift up our voices Each day a new beginning Let hearts be open With hopes arising Our promises don’t deny. We’re friends who offer compassion Whatever the circumstance With fortitude we will overcome Be strong, be true, be free! Reach for tomorrow Take hold our future Let’s build a brighter new day We’re soaring, yet rooted Take flight And see hopes and dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Volatilis tamen radicalis O see our dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Making champions of us all! Principa l’s M essage

Another amazing year has come to a close. The year 2018 has been a very fruitful year. We have thoughtfully mapped out our Strategic Plan for the next five years from 2019 to 2023 with our student outcomes in mind as follows: Cognitive domain: A Critical Thinker and a Learner with a Growth Mindset Social-Moral Domain: An Active Citizen who is rooted in G.I.F.T.E.D. values. Leadership Domain: A Servant Leader who effects Positive Change. Physical Domain: A Physically Active Individual who leads a Healthy Lifestyle Aesthetics Domain: An Expressive Individual who displays an Appreciation for the Arts. For my Principal’s message in the 2017 yearbook, I shared

on Northbrooks’ direction and what it means to be part of the school community. Once again, I would like to thank my Team Northbrooks (educators and support staff), affiliated partners (Parent Support Group/parents, School Advisory Committee and alumni) and our external community and international partners for their unwavering support for the school. I’m also grateful to our dedicated Publications team for working tirelessly on this yearbook. The theme for our 2018 yearbook is ‘Take Flight: An Eagle’s Tale’ and it depicts the dynamic and distinctive journey that our Brooksians experience here in Northbrooks. As a vibrant school community, we have many alumni streaming back to their alma mater during school events such as Teachers’ Day and Brooksian Talent Quest. We were also deeply heartened to see scores of alumni from various batches and former Northbrooks educators who attended the inaugural Alumni Homecoming in July this year. It is also heart-warming to hear success stories of our alumni such as Melvin Ang (self-made successful entrepreneur) and Chelsia Wong

(A*STAR scholar) this year, and we can sense our alumni’s unfaltering bond and commitment to the school. This will not be possible, if not for the strong school efforts, positive teacher-student relationships and friendships forged during their stay in Northbrooks. I believe many of our Brooksians can feel the caring and enabling environment which we strive to foster. Given the steps that we have been taking towards creating such an environment, we are now ready to embark on a new journey to become a Positive Education (PosEd) School in the future. Deliberate step-by-step efforts have been made for 201718 and we have taken the first official step by becoming a member of the 2018 inaugural Singapore Positive Education Network (SPEN). So, why Positive Education? Positive Education focuses on specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience, promote mindfulness and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Its goal is to equip people—students, teachers, administrative and support staff, and community partners, with the skills and tools to flourish, and contribute to the flourishing of others, in ways that support and strengthen learning. For instance, in Northbrooks, we aim to imbue in our Brooksians, the Champion’s Learning Mindset, so as to build their grit and resilience. We believe that every Brooksian can develop these valuable life skills to enhance their capacity to learn effectively, as well as build a strong foundation for their life ahead. This is very much aligned with what Northbrooks stands for in our School Vision, Mission, Values and Motto, and our desire for every student to become an active citizen and a person of good character. Northbrooks is a safe environment for Brooksians to learn. Even if students fall or fail in the process, their community of peers and teachers provide the support and encouragement needed for them to pick themselves up again to learn. We envision Northbrooks to be a place where all members of Northbrooks can feel the joy of coming to school and where there are many moments of spontaneity. Essentially, this is the reason why we have worked on school-wide initiatives such as Student Voice, the school cheer and mascot, and special interest groups. We also hope to create a place where students feel cared for, through programmes such as Heart to Heart talks, ‘Learn to eat, Eat to learn’ Open Breakfast programme, and teacher-student games. Here in Northbrooks, the tagline ‘Learning from Self, from Others and with Others’ captures our signature professional development efforts. I’m elated that we are moving towards strengthening our Critical Inquiry processes to see what

we can glean from our research, so as to put our insights into daily practice to effect improvements. With a strong team learning culture within our professional learning community, we will continue experimenting with different teaching actions in order to translate them to become effective teaching practices – part of honing our craft in teaching. We have also adopted a whole school approach towards ‘Effective Questioning’ and ‘Effective Feedback’ which are vital to developing critical thinking in our Brooksians, so that they can be more discerning, and take greater ownership of their own learning and decision-making. To further enhance our professionalism, a number of experts in the fraternity were invited to Northbrooks to talk about areas such as Assessment, Critical Inquiry, Mindfulness and Positive Education. We are also very proud to have produced our very first 2017 Northbrooks Research and Inquiry Publication, Quest@Northbrooks (QN) (Volume 1), and we are looking forward to the next publication for 2018. In order to deliver high quality programmes, we are constantly innovating and reviewing our existing curriculum and co-curriculum. The multitude of achievements and improvements that we can see in this yearbook are the fruits of labour by all my colleagues. Moreover, we are deepening our efforts in community service and environmental education. In the process, we provide platforms for everyone to come together for a common purpose and appreciate each other and the environment.. Some examples of our efforts in this area include our zero-waste/ food waste programme, ‘no plastics’ initiative, forming of green advocates, and various community service projects, just to name a few. These programmes have a far-reaching, positive impact on our Brooksians’ outlook and mindset. We hope that through these authentic curricular and cocurricular experiences, we will fully realise the School Vision of ‘Every Brooksian a Champion, Impacting the Community’. As One Team Northbrooks, let us all strive together towards our school’s shared vision and mission for the years to come.

Soaring Yet Rooted, Nick Chan Principal

M essage from the Sc hool A dvisory Committee (SAC) Chairman

2018 has been filled with many exciting new opportunities for Northbrooks’ students to learn and experience new things. For instance, there was the inaugural bi-annual year-end concert, Centrestage: The First Act, held at Republic Polytechnic. Clearly, the students had put in a lot of effort and honed their skills and techniques over the course of the year, to be able to put up such energetic and captivating performances. Indeed, this event was just one example of the many ways that Northbrooks has provided opportunities for students to grow and develop. Some other good examples of such opportunities include the Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics, and Science (T.E.A.M.S.) Day that inspires the joy of learning in students and the annual level camps that strengthen students’ mental resilience through various outdoor activities. It is also heartening to see more alumni who stay connected with the school, and who offer to contribute their time and talents. This year’s Alumni Homecoming gathered many former students, from those who had recently graduated to those who were from the first batch of students. Indeed, the various successes of the alumni in their individual pathways, and the impact that they have on their own communities, bear testimony to the important influence that Northbrooks had on their lives. I am pleased to know that behind all the successes and achievements, there is a team of very dedicated and professional administrative and teaching staff led by the Principal, Mr Nick Chan, who have all made tremendous contributions in teaching and nurturing the students with each passing academic year. I would also like to record a word of thanks to all the other SAC members who have also played an important role by sharing their observations, comments and opinions. The SAC works in collaboration and consultation with the Principal to discuss and plan ways we could enhance staff and student welfare, as well as the educational experiences of the students. Finally, I would like to congratulate Northbrooks on another successful year of growing and developing Brooksians, so that they can one day ‘take flight’ and soar. William Choo SAC Chairman

M essage from the Parent Support Group Chairman

It is yet another enriching year where the Parent Support Group (PSG) Executive Committee (Exco) 2017-2018 has continued to strengthen the home-school partnership as well as foster active parent involvement and support across various activities in Northbrooks Secondary (NBrSS). In 2018, we set up appreciation booths manned by PSG members for students to pen well wishes for their fathers, mothers and teachers in the lead-up to these special occasions. We also organised art and craft sessions in conjunction with the inaugural Brooksian Arts Festival. Parents also participated actively in the major school events including the annual Cross Country, National Day Celebrations, Food Donation Drive, Dads for Life activities and most importantly, Teachers’ Day Celebrations where the PSG delighted school staff with our personalised bookmarks, chocolate gifts and cupcakes! We even learnt K-Pop aerobics to have fun after our PSG meetings! I am certain that the new PSG Exco 2019-2020 will continue to deepen the friendships amongst parents through organised activities. I am confident that they will also rally many more parents to make the NBrSS PSG an even bigger success, where there is sharing of knowledge and expertise by parents at learning platforms for both parents and children. As the evergreen classic ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ by Bette Midler aptly puts it,

Did you ever know that you’re my hero, And everything I would like to be. I can fly higher than an eagle, For you are the wind beneath my wings. Let us strive to be a role model and hero for our children, so that we can be the wind beneath their wings as they soar high like Eagor the Eagle, and be champions of their lives! M essage from the Alumni Chairman 2018 has been a year of change for the alumni. In November 2017, the Alumni Executive Committee (Exco) was formed, comprising alumni across several years. We firmly believe that to engage our fellow alumni, we need to be equally committed and engaged ourselves. As such, we took this year to build camaraderie, organise ourselves and develop into a team. Through meetings and many hangouts, we learnt more about our different personalities and backgrounds, and how to rely on each other’s strengths. Our first goal was to welcome alumni back for school events with more frequency, mainly through social media platforms. We are glad that our efforts paid off, and many alumni returned to reconnect with the school, ex-teachers and juniors. The second goal for the year was to bring together alumni and teachers together. This was accomplished during the Homecoming held on 21 July 2018. On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank the alumni who visited the school and engaged with us. All in all, this year brought many challenges and opportunities for learning, collaboration and team spirit. We look forward to building on this year’s successes and make more progress next year. We welcome any alumni who is interested in being more active in alumni activities! Speaking as an alumni myself, I really appreciate that the school is putting more emphasis in engaging the ever-growing alumni body. Since the school was founded in 2010, we have already accumulated 15 cohorts of alumni. To my fellow alumni, I encourage you to reconnect with our school, ex-teachers and old friends from our teenage years. We would especially like to thank Mr Adam, Mr Henry Ng, Mdm Au Lai Fei and Ms Isabel Ho for advising the Exco throughout the year. I would also like to thank the school for supporting the committee in what we do and also the committee members for their dedication and contributions. Best regards,
