The Beginning

Just as WATER Is the basis of life, as a school, we will provide a nurturing and challenging environment, to inspire our pupils to learn and grow.

Just as TREES Like Aspens and Giant Redwoods grow in groves supporting each other with their roots intertwined, people too are connected by a system of roots (our family and friends). When pounded by the storms of life we need to hold each other up; just as the Oak with its deep penetrating roots withstands strong winds and violent storms, we will build a strong foundation of moral values so that our pupils will have the moral courage to make the right choices in life; just as the spreading branches of the Oak provides shelter against the sun and nesting places for birds, we will provide opportunities for our pupils to develop their talents and abilities to the fullest, so that they in turn can reach out to touch the lives of others and make a positive difference to their community and our nation.

NORTHBROOKS SECONDARY SCHOOL

The year 2017 has been an exciting year of renewed leadership and refreshed changes and I’m deeply grateful for the tremendous support, help and advice I’ve received from my fellow colleagues and school partners who are vital collaborators in education for our Brooksians to succeed. As we enter the year of 2018, I’m fully confident of Northbrooks’ immense potential to excel to greater heights. In Northbrooks, we aim to imbue in our students the Champion’s Learning Mindset to build their grit and resilience so that they possess the try-fail-try spirit in whatever they do. Akin to a determined marathon runner, we want our students to possess the grit to complete their course and at the same time, similar to jumping on a trampoline, display resilience and bounce back when faced with any sort of adversity. The Champion’s Learning Mindset is essential for students to live their lives with passion. Being passionate means staying hungry, pursuing continuous improvement and never giving up. With this mindset, challenges or disappointments faced will now be perceived as temporary demands and not long-term in nature. As the saying goes, “When you love what you do, you will not have worked for a single day.” With such self-

defining attributes and devotion, our Brooksians will remain steadfast in their commitment to achieving their dreams. This is the kind of character we aim to nurture in every single one of our students so that they will embrace an active lifelong learning in their adult life later on. I’m gratified that our Brooksians have risen to the occasion numerous times this year and have displayed the school’s G.I.F.T.E.D. (Graciousness, Integrity, Fortitude, Teamwork, Empathy, Discipline) values. Our Student Leaders have been on stage role-modelling through the singing of the National Anthem, taking of the Pledge and singing of the school song during morning assemblies ever since the second day of school. I see more student participation in the leading of assembly programmes and increasing student voice during our level engagement sessions. I even have students approaching me to discuss school issues or pitch ideas such as the possibility of having Special Interest Groups like a Show Choir, for instance. I’m elated to see that my colleagues are on the same page and are excited to create more student ownership opportunities. Examples of such opportunities include the 2-week open house CCA Leaders’ tour, the vibrant

Champion’s Lodge and Art Space, library wall mural art work, NLB Reading Day, English Language & Literature Festival Day, Science Week, Peer Support Leaders programmes for Secondary 3 students, just to name a few. I’m sure we will see more of this in the years to come so that our students can experience learning through authentic and applied settings.

Through this, Northbrooks School Team is becoming truly enduring and we are able to see our own significance of being part of this Northbrooks community.

A number of our students have done exceptionally well in the various opportunities that we have provided them and we are glad they seized the learning experience. Congratulations to all who have participated and excelled in the following events and activities: Northbrooks Red Cross Youth Cadets at NDP 2017 Floating Platform, National Create Your Newspaper Competition, Media Computing Competition, SDMA, 16th Elementz Science Competition, C Division Boys’ 10m Air Rifle Competition, 3rd “新空下” National Xinyao Singing and Song Writing Competition Grand Finals 2017, FamChamps Award, Singapore Youth Festival, National Sports Games, National Schools Literature Festival, ignITE SKILLS CHALLENGE 2017, Youth Flying Club Winners of Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition (SAFMC) 2017, National First Aid Competition 2017, SYF 2017 Theme Song Writing Contest, Yellowren Festival Canvas Painting Competition, Mathematics and Science Pursuit and many more.

This year, all Singapore schools received the Singapore Teaching Practice (STP) ‘gift’. To dovetail with the Singapore Curriculum Philosophy, I’m thrilled that Northbrooks has completed its very first Educators’ Philosophy statements, in which our educators penned their own guiding beliefs or philosophies. These will be symbolically sited visibly within the school compound on the Northbrooks Education Philosophy Wall, and this represents our commitment towards becoming ‘Skillful Champion Teachers’.

In particular, our niche programmes, Aerospace Programme (ALP) and Adventure.Character. Environment. (A.C.E.) Outdoor Education programme (LLP) are well designed and integrated within the curriculum. They both provide our students with deep learning and authentic experiences, developing champion learners and mindful leaders with a keen interest in aerospace and a love for outdoor pursuits.

We have a significant number of department and external sharing this year alone and it is our first humble attempt to consolidate our PLT projects into our very own Teaching & Learning Professional Learning Community (T&L PLC) Monograph this year. We have a couple of notable staff professional achievements too. Our “Teaching in Education Support (TiES) PLC” was awarded the MOE IDEAS Bank (MIB) Best Suggestion of the Year (Schools) 2016 award; our use of ‘Hudl Technique App’ to enhance Games Skills development in PE attained the Commendation Award for Innergy Award; Our PE/Outdoor Education and Humanities team were invited to showcase their respective projects (A.C.E OE Programme and Germanopology) in the MOE ExCel Fest 2017 for instance.

And all these will not be possible without our teachers’ efforts to plan and organise the activities, and provide mentorship and guidance to our students. Thank you, colleagues. In my staff correspondence emails and staff meetings, I often use the term ‘Northbrooks Family’ to address my colleagues as the term ‘family’ holds great significance for me. Everyone in Northbrooks is, de facto, an important member of this Northbrooks Family. We accept and learn to accommodate each other, by

Our external community partners have also fully supported the school in various ways and we express our sincere gratitude for their invaluable contributions to Northbrooks: Republic Polytechnic, Gambas Constituency, Orienteering Federation Singapore, PA Water Venture, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), STEM Inc.@Singapore Science Centre, Association of Aerospace Industries (AAIS), Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC), Aero-modelling Federation of Singapore (AFS), ST Aerospace, Seng Pang Tua Pek Kong Keng Temple and our two new partners, AWWA and Heartware Networks. In this journey, we need many role models, life coaches or mentors to come on board to be a part of this Home-School-Community ecosystem. Our School Team, School Advisory Committee (SAC), alumni, Parent Support Group (PSG) and external community partners play an indispensable role in achieving our core mission. I’m deeply appreciative of my two highly competent Vice-Principals, Mrs Chithra and Mr Adam, and my dynamic School Management Committee (SMC) for easing our new Key Personnel and me into the school culture and adapting to my school leadership style. Our SMC members have displayed strong teamwork and leadership in leading their departments and committees, innovating and making marked improvements in the respective school functions. Thank you, VPs and SMC colleagues. For our affiliated partners, I’m very thankful for the formation of our highly committed PSG, led by our PSG Chairman, Mr Teo Cheak Han and his ViceChairpersons, Mr Richard Lim and Mdm Sakura, and our exceptionally supportive SAC, led by our SAC Chairman, Mr William Choo with the inclusion of two new members, Mr Jayadev and Mr Lawrence Yip this year.

Through all these contributions, there is immense potential for growth and development. I’m upbeat about Northbrooks’ future and we can do so much more together. We will continue to focus on ‘StudentLed, Student-Owned Opportunities’, ‘Staff is Key’ and ‘Home-School-Community partnership’ for 2018. As written in my personal educator’s philosophy, “I strongly believe our students can become self-regulated learners who can take charge of their learning. With grit, confidence and passion, I believe they can realise their fullest potential and pursue their own dreams, not only for the betterment of their own lives, but also for the community at large.” As we march on towards our 20th anniversary in year 2020, I am proud to be a part of Northbrooks’ success that has been built over the years. The School Advisory Committee (SAC) Chairman’s Message Over the last couple of years that I have served in the School Advisory Committee (SAC) of Northbrooks Secondary School, I have seen the tremendous progress made in the various facets of education. This is evident through the different school, academic and staff achievements, as well as through students’ participation and commendable performance in extra-curricular activities like sports and interest groups. There is also an increasing number of Northbrooks’ alumni coming back to contribute to the school. This augurs well; it will help the school to grow from strength to strength. Amongst the many achievements, I am particularly impressed with the students’ projects under the Aerospace Applied Learning Programme (ALP). I have seen the aero-modelling displays before and they were splendid. Similarly, the school’s stained glass art activities and accomplishments are outstanding. Some of the artworks by the students were even displayed and sold at a fundraising dinner for the school last year, which really illustrates how Brooksians can impact the community with their skills. The SAC works in consultation and collaboration with the Principal to plan various initiatives to enhance the educational experiences of the students. One of this year’s noteworthy programmes includes the hosting of students from Nanya High School in Changsha, China. In addition, this year we supported the joint opening of the Champions’ Lodge, our After School Engagement (ASE) centre, and the Arts Space, a space for the expression of creativity and the arts. I am glad to see how such an event gives the students an opportunity to develop leadership skills too, as part and parcel of their learning in the school.

The Parents’ Support Group (PSG) Chairman’s Message As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”, a strong home-school partnership can make a difference in fostering the healthy development of our children. Northbrooks Secondary School has in place a strong tradition of active parent involvement and support across various school activities. In 2017, for each of the special days – Fathers’ Day, Mothers’ Day, and Teachers’ Day – the PSG members set up booths for students to pen their well wishes and notes of appreciation for those who guide and nurture them. Apart from this, parents also participated actively in the major school events including the Cross Country, Food Donation Drive, Dads for Life activities and of course, Teachers’ Day Celebrations. We even delighted school staff with stalks of chocolate flowers hand-made specially by the PSG Executive Committee. Moving ahead, I certainly look forward to greater bonding and deeper friendships amongst parents. With continued guidance and support from the school leaders and staff, we can rally together to make this support group an even bigger success where there is more sharing of knowledge, talent and expertise by parents at various learning platforms for both parents and children. They shared that they learnt about fortitude through the activity as initially, they faced some challenges when some residents did not open their door. However, as they persevered and stated their purpose of collecting recyclables, most of the residents donated their items.

Two teams represented Northbrooks at the Mathematics and Science Pursuit, organised by Republic Polytechnic and the Singapore Science Centre. Students had to compete with 28 other teams from various secondary schools to solve 4 challenges. One of the two teams eventually emerged overall champion!

To learn more about the challenges of visually impaired people, the students took part in activities in Dark Simulation Rooms. The competition was organised by National Cadet Corps headquarters.

The cadets share a moment with children from the indigenous Orang Asli community in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Smiling and friendly, the children were showing their agility as they performed backflips off the boat and into the water.

The Red Cross and the Red Crescent officers and cadets forged meaningful friendships during the overseas immersion programme. Nur Fatini (3F) shared that she particularly appreciated the local Red Crescent cadets who helped to bridge the language barrier during the session with the Orang Asli children.
