Northbrooks’ Story
The Beginning Northbrooks Secondary School started at the dawn of a new millennium on 2 January 2000 with eight Secondary 1 classes. Built at a cost of over $23 million, the school is fully-equipped with IT facilities and is set amidst the beautiful natural surroundings of Yishun Park. The school is united in its desire to do its very best for its students and to prepare them for the future knowledge-based workplace. Besides developing their capacity to learn, the school also focuses on building the character of its students and helping them to develop compassion for others. The name Northbrooks is derived from the Yuan Dynasty proverb 饮水思 源. This is one of the core moral values inculcated in all Brooksians: to always remember their roots and to be grateful to their family, teachers, friends and country for the success they achieve in life.

The Brooksian Crest
Just as WATER is the basis of life, the school will provide a nurturing and challenging environment to inspire all Brooksians to learn and grow.
Just as TREES like Aspens and Giant Redwoods grow in groves supporting one another with their roots intertwined, people too are connected by a system of roots (our family and friends). When pounded by the storms of life, we need to hold one another up; like the Oak with their deep, penetrating roots, the School will build a strong foundation of moral values in all Brooksians so that they will have the moral courage to make the right choices in life; like the Oak spreading their branches to provide shelter and nesting place for birds, the school will provide opportunities for Brooksians to develop their talents and abilities to the fullest, so that they in turn can reach out to touch the lives of others.
GOLD Background With a firm foundation in moral values to guide their thinking, Brooksians will have the confidence to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. They will be well-balanced individuals, anchored by strong roots and equipped with wings to soar to great heights to achieve their dreams with integrity; and they will become people with values, of value to their community and to the nation.

The Brooksian Anthem
With Brooksian fervour Lift up our voices Each day a new beginning Let hearts be open With hopes arising Our promise don’t deny. We’re friends who offer compassion Whatever the circumstance With fortitude we will overcome Be strong, be true, be free! Reach for tomorrow Take hold our future Let’s build a brighter new day We’re soaring, yet rooted Take flight And see our hopes and dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Volatilis tamen radicalis O see our dreams come true Our fears to conquer Stand tall Discover who we are and more Making champions of us all Making champions of us all! Principal’s Message
“There are challenges in life that present themselves unexpectedly, and if you rise to them, then those challenges will toughen you up.” - Mr Nick Chan
[L-R] Mr Adam Ahmad (Vice-Principal), Mr Nick Chan (Principal) & Mrs Chithra Venkatraman (Vice-Principal)
Undoubtedly, in such extraordinary times, we have persevered and stayed true to our education commitment, and we have not wasted the school year for 2020 and lost a generation in the process. Despite the Covid-19 crisis, it has not dampened our Northbrooks spirit and our Brooksians have adjusted well and bounced forward to continue to make this year a fulfilling and meaningful one. The Northbrooks spirit has come to the fore – our Champion Learning Mindset (Growth Mindset, Grit and Resilience) and Mindfulness that we have progressively fostered, day after day, has become a source of immunity to this adversity as well. Though the Coronavirus pandemic is the crisis of a generation, it can also mould this generation, through unity and resilience achieved by shared experiences of an existential ordeal. The theme for our 2020 Yearbook ‘#NorthbrooksUnited’ means being united, adaptable and resilient in these times of uncertainty. The sections within this Yearbook depict 5 themes: Staying Timeless, Staying Stronger, Staying Resilient, Staying Innovative and Staying Together, expressing our commitment and efforts to maintain a vibrant school experience for the Northbrooks community. As part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations to mark Northbrooks reaching another milestone, I am elated to share that we have published our very own 20th Anniversary Commemorative Magazine and created our Northbrooks Story animation video. Furthermore, I am happy that we have attained increased Secondary One enrolments for the past two years with improved school academic attainments and quality school programme development in our Cognitive and ChAMPS (Character, Aesthetics, Moral, Physical and Social) domains. We are also proud that our Class of 2019 performed exceptionally well in their ‘N’ and ‘O’ level results. All these would not have been possible if not for our dedicated Team Northbrooks (staff). Thank you Team Northbrooks! “The educator will need to believe in the potential power of his pupil, and he must employ all his art in seeking to bring his pupil to experience this power.” - Alfred Adler On a number of occasions, I’ve shared with our Northbrooks community on the need to create opportunities to let our Brooksians take lead and take ownership of their own learning. Essentially, it means having more faith in how much they can handle, even if it means they have to struggle. Having faith, knowing they can benefit from some struggle, is crucial and it builds resilience and a sense of capability as our Brooksians learn how much they can possibly do. Encouragement, by itself, requires a lot of faith and encouragement is to give courage to another person to take the leap of faith to try something new or to pursue their dreams. We spur and cheer each other on and this is what we

advocate in the bond with one another within Northbrooks, educators with their charges or Brooksians’ peer-to-peer interaction. In the past, we may have taken many things for granted. However, I can see the positive changes that have come about due to this crisis, that is, we appreciate and care for each other and show gratitude to others. This is evident in the numerous community projects, big and small, which we have done in the course of this year; such as our MakerSpace in-house masks production, donation to the needy in our neighbourhood, class appreciation for migrant workers and collaboration with Grab to prepare handmade well wishes packages for the healthcare workers. As one Team Northbrooks, we have shown resilience and ingenuity in coping with the many challenges that the pandemic has brought and we have never ceased to transform ourselves. Through continuous professional learning and experimentation, we found new ways to bring about exciting and enriching learning experiences for our Brooksians. For example, we partnered with a number of Positive Education (PosEd) advocates from National Institute of Education and Positive Movement / Singapore University of Social Sciences and Brahm Centre to create a number of PosEd experiences for them. Other notable partnerships include ones with ACCESS Singapore for our mentoring programme, Apple Education Team on iPad Teaching and Learning and Cerebry’s Artificial Intelligence personalised learning for Mathematics. Our Professional Learning Community has also remained steadfast by pursuing our 2020 research and inquiry work and I am proud to share that this year, we have published our third volume of Quest@Northbrooks Monograph Publication which comprises all our educators’ 2019 research reports. This is the same Try-Fail-Try-Learn spirit that everyone in the Northbrooks Community embraces, be it our staff or students. Our Team Northbrooks will always remain devoted to our cause – ‘Every Brooksian a Champion, Impacting the Community’ – Our School Vision which you hear us echoing repeatedly. There is so much potential in every Brooksian that we are always looking forward to their learning taking shape in class, outside of class and in the community. Together with our Northbrooks Community of Skillful Champion Teachers and our strong Home-School-Community partnerships, we will continue to develop quality authentic curriculum and co-curriculum experiences for our Brooksians and fully realise the School Vision. To conclude, even though we are faced with perhaps one of the biggest challenges of our lifetime, I am heartened and encouraged by our Brooksians, Team Northbrooks and our Partners-in-Education for coming together as one community. With our strong conviction in education and future plans in the pipeline, I am positive that 2021 will be a better year as we transform ourselves to be future ready. On a personal note, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to outgoing School Advisory Committee (SAC) Chairman, Mr William Choo, and SAC member, Ms Grace Ang for their unwavering support and contributions to Northbrooks. At the same time, I would like to welcome our new SAC Chairman, Mr Lawrence Yip, and new SAC members, BG Dinesh Vasu Dash and Mr Melvin Ang. I am also happy to share that Dr. T. Chandroo, our first Patron, will also be part of the Northbrooks Family. Lastly, thank you to our dedicated publication team for working tirelessly on yet another wonderful and distinctive Yearbook. Soaring Yet Rooted, Nick Chan Principal

Online International Exchange of Singapore and China’s Students Zbcomma 12.08.2020 by Wang Yining, Ning Yuxuan, Shanmuga Sundaram Srijan
As we cannot travel during the pandemic, therefore, on the afternoon of June 30, students from Northbrooks Secondary School and Nanya Middle School of Changsha, Hunan, China held an online seminar on the “Responsibilities of Today’s Youth”. Students from Northbrooks Secondary School and sister school, Nanya Middle School conducted their online seminar via Zoom. This was to ensure that both schools maintained their international partnership in spite of the pandemic. Principal Mr Nick Chan said: “Science and technology continue to advance so that face-to-face communication will not be affected by the virus. Students can work together to meet future challenges and improve themselves through such international exchanges.” The students from the two schools expressed their views on the topic of “The Responsibilities of Today’s Youth” and explored whether the youth have a sense of responsibility at all levels. In addition to the basic responsibilities to the country and family, the students also discussed the civic responsibilities of the youth during the epidemic, such as complying with epidemic prevention regulations and taking care of personal health. In addition, sensitivity to online speech and caution in online behavior are important tasks faced by the youth. Terence Ooi Zi Heng (14 years old) said: “I originally planned to go to Changsha for exchanges at the end of the year, but due to the raging epidemic, I had to give up. Although I was disappointed, this video conference taught me that communication does not have to be face-to-face, as long as I am willing to try, video conferencing is also a way for students to learn from each other.” Ascendas Teo Yue Teng Fei (14 years old), who organized the meeting, also believes that this video conference can stimulate students to reflect on the various responsibilities that young people should take, and think about how to bring a positive impact to society.
