Preface T

he year 2020 is a commemorative milestone for Northbrooks’ history as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. Our theme for 2020 is ‘Home of Champions’, as we believe that our current and former Brooksians espouse our School Vision, ‘Every Brooksian a Champion, Impacting the Community’.

We decided to leverage the Brooksian Anthem to create a seamless and cohesive narrative of what Northbrooks stands for, that weaves through our special 20th Anniversary Magazine publication.

This song opens a window into the sense of hope, growth, and camaraderie that makes Northbrooks a Home of Champions.

Through the Lens of our Brooksian Anthem The Anthem evokes a sense of hope for the future, and encourages Brooksians to impact the community. The line ‘each day a new beginning’ encourages us to think of each day as offering new opportunities to grow and learn. The lyrics inspire all Brooksians to ‘take flight’, ‘stand tall’ and believe that they can soar to the height of their dreams. We nurture our students to become persons of good character who can ‘build a brighter new day’ for themselves, their families and the community.

It is impossible to not feel galvanised by the uplifting lyrics about persisting when faced with tough times. The phrase ‘with fortitude we will overcome’ reminds us that no challenge is insurmountable if we persevere. Some of these challenges could include our own ‘fears to conquer’. In Northbrooks, ‘making champions of us all’ means developing these qualities of grit and resilience, as Brooksians strive to realise their own potential.

Finally, the Anthem evokes solidarity among Brooksians, both past and present. Many will recall fondly the times they sang these lyrics, together with their friends and teachers. Just as the lines ‘We’re friends who offer compassion / whatever the circumstance’ suggest, here in Northbrooks, we form deep bonds with each other over shared experiences. We trust that even after graduation, the friendships forged continue to thrive.

The Cover Design The painterly image of an eagle metamorphosing into the number 20 reflects the soaring spirit of our school’s history. Fluid brushstrokes form the image to reflect a smooth, unconstrained movement, similar to our striving towards progress. The complementary shades of blue and yellow, which are our school’s colours, also reflect the vibrancy of our Brooksians’ rich experiences and achievements.

As part of our celebration, we would like to present to you, our special publication for our 20th anniversary. As you browse the pages of the magazine, we hope that it will evoke fond memories of all that you have experienced here in Northbrooks.

Principal’s Message N

orthbrooks is proud to be marking our 20th anniversary – a symbolic milestone in the Northbrooks Story. Our school is a home for many. The Northbrooks Community, comprising our teaching and supporting staff, alumni, School Advisory Committee (SAC), Parents Support Group, parents, and our other Partners-in-Education, has helped to make this a special place for our Brooksians.

I am also elated to announce that Dr. T. Chandroo, our SAC Chairman from 2011 to 2016, has agreed to be the first Patron of Northbrooks from 2020 onwards. The Guest of Honour for our 20th Anniversary celebration, Dr. Chandroo is also the Chairman / CEO of Modern Montessori International and Chairman of the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Every Brooksian a Champion, Impacting the Community.

Northbrooks is our Home of Champions. Here, we believe there is a champion in each of our Brooksians. They can achieve something in life as long as they set a clear and purposeful goal for themselves and work towards it with grit and resilience. We are also certain that our Brooksians will turn out well to become persons of good character who will contribute back to the society.

Soaring Yet Rooted Reflecting on our journey, Northbrooks has progressed much since its beginnings at the dawn of a new millennium on 2 January 2000.

From a brand-new building located amidst forested surroundings, it has transformed into a vibrant school community in the Yishun neighbourhood. Staying steadfast to our School Vision, Mission and Values and to instill the joy of learning, we have designed a plethora of customised Cognitive and ChAMPS (Character, Aesthetics, Moral, Physical and Social) experiences to nurture our Brooksians. We constantly challenge our Brooksians to be the best versions of themselves each day. Beginning with discovering oneself and growing with others, they move on to learning to lead and serve, and finally to making a difference to the community and being future-ready.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues and our Partners-in-Education, past and present, who have dedicated their time and hard work in making Northbrooks into what it is today. Together, let us remember the challenges we faced during the Covid-19 crisis, and how we stood united in solidarity as one NorthbrooksUnited. I am sure we will emerge stronger and more resilient as one SGUnited.

Moving forward, here’s to another 20 fantastic years ahead!

y heartiest congratulations to Northbrooks Secondary on its 20th Anniversary! As the Chairman of the SAC, I am proud to have journeyed with the school for more than a decade, watching it grow from strength to strength.

pleased that Northbrooks formally formed its alumni in 2018 and they have been giving back to their alma mater by participating in and supporting school events, training students during their cocurricular activities as volunteer officers, and giving motivational and career talks to graduating students, to name a few. The successful homecomings are a testament to the positive impact Northbrooks has had on its students.

Education has always been a powerful social leveller. Schools play an important role in creating spaces and communities for students to learn and grow, regardless of their background. Equally vital, too, is the work of building strong partnerships between the school and the wider community. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child.

Let us continue to work hand in hand in these challenging and uncertain times. I trust that Northbrooks offers hope and opportunity to all who walk through its gates.

This is why I am glad to see that Northbrooks continues to strive towards providing opportunities for all students to flourish. The SAC, as a Partner-in-Education, supports various school initiatives such as the Breakfast Programme, as well as financial assistance schemes for students in need. In addition, to enrich the students’ learning, we have expanded partnerships with other organisations in the community, through programmes such as vocational internships.

In addition, I believe that amongst other successes, a strong alumni is also a testimony of the progress the school has achieved in the holistic development of both its past and present students. I am Home of Champions | 5

Patron’s Message A

s a longtime friend of Northbrooks Secondary School (NBrSS), it gives me immense pleasure to pen these few words as I have witnessed the phenomenal growth of the school in recent years.

The graduates of NBrSS are well regarded for their strong characters, values, and indeed they are one of a kind, are Champions who will excel in the 21st century.

I remember fondly, in the year 2008, when I was recommended by the Student Management Officer, Mdm. Nair to the then Principal, Mrs. Low Chew Lian to join NBrSS’ School Advisory Committee to share my experiences and business knowledge. I readily accepted and I must say that two distinct characteristics of the school convinced me further that I had made the right decision: 1. NBrSS pays special attention to low income families by helping children from these families.

2. NBrSS places special emphasis on aerospace engineering and nurtures students who have a keen interest in this field.

In the last 10 years, with its dedicated teaching staff, the school has been performing remarkably well by soaring higher, year after

year. As a heartland school, it has been a role model for many others to emulate and I certainly take pride in associating with this trend setter.

Recently, when I was asked by the current Principal, Mr. Nick Chan if I would accept the appointment of first Patron of NBrSS, I felt so elated and with all humility I said a big ‘yes’ to him. What a wonderful opportunity to work with the school, SAC and the staff once again. I can’t ask for more.

I wish Northbrooks success and ask that it will always stay true to its ideals.

Parent Support Group Chairman’s Message T

his year, as Northbrooks Secondary School celebrates its 20th Anniversary, I feel honoured to have gone through a part of this journey with the school. Northbrooks is truly a unique school that has a place in the hearts of both its students and their parents.

To nurture the whole child, parental involvement is vital. As parents, we play an important part in the lives of our children. Our young ones appreciate and cherish moments when their folks can be by their side throughout this character building journey. For the past 2 years that I have been with Northbrooks Secondary as a parent, I have witnessed students grow from shy little twelve-yearold kids into confident young teenagers. I have witnessed parents watch their children grow and graduate with pride. We welcome more parents to join us in making the lives of our children more enriching and fulfilling, and their growing up years in Northbrooks a holistic and fun experience that goes beyond books and exams.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the staff for their hard work over the years and for reaching this significant milestone. I believe this publication will bring back many fond memories of the past and remind us of how far we have come.

Miss Lam Ai-Leen Principal (2000 - 2004) It has been with great pride for me to watch Brooksians discover and grow their talents in Northbrooks over the past 20 years and make full use of the many opportunities to learn, grow and shine. Guided by the Brooksian Motto ‘Soaring Yet Rooted’ and Core Values of ‘G.I.F.T.E.D.’, I believe Brooksians have the wings to soar to great heights and blossom into confident young people with hearts of compassion and grace.

Northbrooks has made such an impression in my life and how I work with people. Making the school ‘inviting’ for everyone, celebrating every success however small, valuing all talents, providing opportunities for everyone, cultivating good habits of the mind and inspiring students with stories during daily morning assemblies are just some examples.

All of us carry with us memories of the experiences and lessons learnt, which make us resilient and put us in good stead to have a ‘keen sense of duty and community’. We carry that torch to continue lighting up people’s lives.

Mrs. Helen Chong Principal (2012 - 2016) Team Northbrooks has a staff culture of openness: openness to feedback, to innovation and to learning. Deprivatised classrooms means that the teachers can tap on each other to grow their own competencies. Learning from Self, Learning from Others and Learning with Others best summarise the staff learning attitude. I remember that there was so much wonderful work going on in the classrooms that at staff meetings, I was simply bursting to share my observations with everyone. So blessed did I feel to be amongst a team of champion growers.

A Walk Down Memory Lane...

Mrs. Esther Mok Superintendent

(North 6 Cluster 2006 - 2011 and 2015 - 2018) Northbrooks Secondary – a place of creativity, innovation and care. I remember the School Opening – the Musical (The Sound of Music) and the Forum Theatre. It was a creative, colourful and vibrant event where staff and students demonstrated their talents, passion, enthusiasm and diversity. The school has grown from strength to strength to nurture Champions for Life. People are key to the school and I will always treasure the graciousness, thoughtfulness, teamwork and fortitude of both staff and students who are anchored in strong moral values, and have a keen sense of duty to society.

When I think about Northbrooks, I remember significant pursuits of the school that have come about from the passion of teachers in areas beyond academic subjects.

It was recognised for its Aerospace Programme in 2013. Teachers with a passion for aerospace engineering designed and taught the programme.

Every visitor to the school will not fail to notice ‘Opus Magnum’, a room full of displays of colourful stained glass artworks. Students learn about beauty, patience and entrepreneurship through making these art pieces, under the guidance of their own Art teachers who are passionate about such a delicate art form.

Northbrooks has come a long way since its inception in 2000. The school leaders and staff are highly commended for their vision and foresight in putting in place innovative systems, structures and programmes to ensure that every Brooksian is developed to be a Champion. Students are afforded diverse opportunities to deepen their learning, and to develop their character and talents.

I would like to congratulate the school for its many fine achievements as it celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

The Beginning ALL READY TO RECEIVE THE FIRST COHORT

Northbrooks Secondary School started at the dawn of a new millennium on 2 January 2000 with eight Secondary 1 classes. Built at a cost of over $23 million, the school is fully-equipped with IT facilities and is set amidst the beautiful natural surroundings of Yishun Park.

The school is united in its desire to do its very best for its students and to prepare them for the future knowledge-based workplace. Besides developing their capacity to learn, the school also focuses on building the character of its students and helping them to develop compassion for others.

The name Northbrooks is derived from the Yuan Dynasty proverb 饮水思源. This is one of the core moral values inculcated in all Brooksians: to always remember their roots and to be grateful to their family, teachers, friends and country for the success they achieve in life.

The Crest Just as WATER is the basis of life, the school will provide a nurturing and challenging environment to inspire all Brooksians to learn and grow.

Just as TREES like Aspens and Giant Redwoods grow in groves supporting one another with their roots intertwined, people too are connected by a system of roots (our family and friends). When pounded by the storms of life, we need to hold one another up; like the Oak with their deep, penetrating roots, the School will build a strong foundation of moral values in all Brooksians so that they will have the moral courage to make the right choices in life; like the Oak spreading their branches to provide shelter and nesting place for birds, the school will provide opportunities for Brooksians to develop their talents and abilities to the fullest, so that they in turn can reach out to touch the lives of others.

GOLD Background With a firm foundation in moral values to guide their thinking, Brooksians will have the confidence to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. “In secondary school, I had always wanted to work in the media industry, so I took Communications and New Media in NUS. Then, I took a 6-months internship in a Public Relations firm - and hated it! My dreams were dashed and I didn’t know what to do. After graduation, I stumbled into insurance by chance. Before I knew it, five years had passed by and I had worked my way up, despite having no background in finance. Later, I helped set up my current company, and was made the Underwriting Manager.

You may not always live your childhood dreams, but you can still do really well if you work hard. And yes, please, do all the internships and part time jobs in your youth and your older self will thank you for it.”

Functional Safety System Engineer, Aptiv Nutonomy Singapore Timothy obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics and Probability in 2019 under the EDB Industrial Postgraduate Programme. He works for a technology company for future mobility and autonomous driving.

Timothy gave back to the school as a volunteer instructor for the Concert Band from 2005 to 2010, and as a relief teacher in 2006 and 2008.

Amrit is currently completing her Masters in Digital Management with Hyper Island while juggling the demands of being an entrepreneur in her own startup, helping companies build innovative products.

“I’ve always been curious about people and exploring unfamiliar terrain. When I was at Northbrooks, being in the Student Council and the English Literary, Drama and Debate Society (CCA) helped nurture my curiosity and capabilities to contribute to the community. I’ve been able to take those attributes to find opportunities to serve others in many roles, such as an entrepreneur, humanitarian and volunteer.”

Business Director, Lévy Gorvy (Hong Kong) “I remember being very uncertain when I first joined Northbrooks. Now, looking back, my experiences at Northbrooks have shaped the person that I am. One of the key lessons that I carry with me till today is that you cannot choose the family that you are born into, but you can control the rest of your life, and become anyone you want to be.

I started my career in Singapore at one of the top auction houses, and was given the opportunity to move to Hong Kong in 2015. Having never lived or worked overseas before, I decided to take up the challenge knowing that I was equipped with all the lessons and experiences that I gained during my time at Northbrooks. Now, I am working for a very reputable and well-known art gallery worldwide.”

2007 Joshua Wong

Senior Technician 2, Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore Pte. Ltd. Although Joshua studied Hotel Management at SHATEC and did a one year attachment at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel, he decided to switch to a totally different sector after serving national service.

“Working in a petrochemical company with no engineering background, the first few years were tough as I had to learn everything from scratch. I’m glad that I have a supportive mentor and colleagues who have guided me along the way.

This is my 7th year working in this company, and every day is a brand new experience, not mundane at all. I always believe that hard work and having the correct attitude at work will bring positive results.”

Muhammad Syazni Bin Ramlee

Floorball Coach and National Athlete “My floorball journey started at age 13 when I took up the sport as a CCA. It became a way to put aside all my troubles and negativity; I was able to focus on getting better, improving in the way I play. Guided by my coach, I developed a sense of responsibility and a “never-give-up” mentality. Floorball has become my passion. It has played a huge part in my life since I started to play for the National Men’s Team at age 17.”

Siti Nur Alyaa Rauff

Yoga Teacher - Personal Trainer - Fitness Instructor, Ufit Aly has been passionate about yoga, health & fitness and wellness for more than eight years now, and currently works for Ufit, one of the top gyms in Singapore. While not a typical job for a Singaporean, Aly has found a lot of success in her work. She travels to different countries to teach yoga and is currently expanding her work into the online space as well.

As a national athlete, some of Syazni’s top achievements include clinching the Gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games 2015 and the Asia-Oceania Floorball Championship in 2019. As a coach, he focuses on nurturing a positive mindset in players and building a harmonious team culture.

2009 Edmund Lim Tian Zhong

Legal Associate, Allen & Gledhill LLP Edmund graduated from the University of Manchester (United Kingdom) with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). He is currently a Practice Trainee and will commence his full-time career with the firm as a Legal Associate when he becomes a qualified lawyer upon getting called to the Singapore Bar in August 2020.

In 2016, while he was an undergraduate law student, Edmund won the Damien Bourke Mooting Prize, a first for an Asian international student.

Adeline Tay Gui Feng

Volunteer First Aider - Advocate for children with special needs Adeline studied for 4 years at ITE College East, and then graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a Diploma in Applied Food Science and Nutrition.

Despite being diagnosed with alopecia totalis, a condition that causes hair loss, Adeline has been volunteering since she was 16. She won the prestigious Harvard Prize Book (Singapore) in 2019/20 for sustained altruism, caring behaviours and/or service leadership.

Monyi went to Australia to do her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at James Cook University. In 2020, she began interning at Cairns Hospital while doing research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

“As international students, we had our first experience of Singapore’s education system in Northbooks. We are grateful for the passionate teachers who helped us to adapt to the new environment, and who also instilled in us the right values and guided us in our studies. Muhammad Nursyafiq Bin Abdul R. Awaiting enlistment

Syafiq graduated from Republic Polytechnic in 2020 with a Diploma in Aviation Management.

“I never once regretted choosing Northbrooks as my first choice of secondary school after PSLE; as I always felt very lucky to have been given many opportunities to lead school events like Teachers’ Day and Graduation Night as well as initiate the inaugural Northbrooks’ Student Council Camp in 2014.

Adrian Benjamin Kiffly Full-time NSman

Adrian graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a Diploma in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Technology (Merit). He was awarded the A*STAR Science Award in 2016, and the Pfizer Asia Pacific Bronze Medal in 2018. After completing National Service, he will be pursuing Chemical Engineering at the National University of Singapore.

Gavin graduated from Republic Polytechnic in 2019 with a Diploma in Biomedical Science (Merit). His interest in biomedical sciences led to him taking part in a research attachment programme with A*STAR. As an intern in a department studying the field of genetics, he had a taste of life as a researcher. The experience helped him to discover more about himself and develop time management skills.

He plans to apply for university admission after completing National Service.

As the leader of the Compassion Youth in Action Club in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Joelle is in charge of the project IMHOPE, where volunteers organise weekly activities at different wards in IMH to help integrate residents back into society.
